I really really like this little place. Very warm and relaxed.
It's usually only a 2 person show, so I could imagine that things get a little hectic with the service. But I've never had an issue. The owners are super nice and welcoming. They have a lot of regulars from the building and seems like they have a nice community vibe going.
I always get perogies, potato pancakes and kolbassa. And it's delicious. It's simple food and it's yummy!!
Looking forward to their next buffet!!!
Well, what an experience!
If you LOVE amazing Ukrainian cuisine presented in a quaint small space, with happy helpful staff, and you're up for a bit of adventure to get there, this is a MUST TRY!!!
This place is located in the basement of a residential high rise off of Henderson down near the river.
You buzz in, just as you would as if you were visiting a tenant. You then take the elevator to a lower level, travel long (tunnel like) halls to finally reach the restaurant tucked away in a far corner.
Me, my wife, our 3yo daughter, and wife's grandma made the trek recently, awesome experience.
We had to wait a short time to get a table, but not too long. There were several senior citizens already in the restaurant and several more waiting to get in. I believe the building caters to seniors so be well prepared to run the gauntlet of walkers that are parked outside the restaurant door! We were greeted by them and made to feel welcome and included, the friendliest seniors ever!
The waitress in the restaurant was a woman from Poland? Ukraine? Czech? with a heavy accent and super friendly!!
After the short wait we were seated in a corner table for four. The decor is a mix of coffee shop with a slight Eastern European grocery store feel? Very cool.
We all started with the beet borscht, to die for. Beautiful gentle soup with an abundance of shredded beets and veggies and just the right amount of dill and seasoning. With sour cream stirred in by the server prior to coming to the table, AWESOME.
We all had the Ukrainian Combination plate of perogies, cabbage rolls, choice of meatballs or kolbasa and the freshest home baked buns I've ever tasted, perfect for sopping up the delicious meatball gravy!
For dessert we all had a slice of (don't know the name) cross between a pie and a torte. A crust on the bottom filled with a raisin mixture topped with merengue and walnuts!!! DELICIOUS!
Not very sweet, kinda tart, perfect end to a great meal!
As an interesting addition to the entire adventure, we were treated to a concert by the king himself Elvis! Lol the restaurant is located right beside the buildings recreation room where residents have events. The entertainment for the evening was an Elvis impersonator complete with costumes and light show! $5 at the door!
Now I don't know what was more entertaining, the mediocre impersonator, or, the extremely appreciative crowd? Which included 70-80 yrs ladies grabbing his sweat drenched silk (poly) scarves!
What an adventure!! A great time was had by all, the food was amazing, a very memorable evening.
We will Definitely be returning for the kings come back special.
A MUST TRY.
Nice people, borsch was good!!! Not as good as my babas. Potato pancakes were delicious. (Still not as good as my babas) coming back to try the perogies.
