A Notre Dame gem. Wish their healthy yummy to-go food had been around during my stay nearby at Women's hospital a few years back, but I console myself with the city's best cappuccino now. And a lemon tart! And the sausage roll...
Always amazing and considered options, very thoughtful. Organic, gluten free and delicious! Good to eat in or take out. Extremely warm and kind service experience. In a hurry or for a catch up with pals - highly recommended!!
Me and hubby went here for a healthy lunch and it was beyond amazing! The vegan and vegetarian pizzas were so flavourful and the staff so friendly. Great atmosphere and we wish them nothing but success!
The Italian Job salad is one of the best dishes I've had in the city - and not just for a salad! Fresh ingredients and unique flavour combinations. I feel very lucky that I work close by. The only downside is that the food can be a little pricey. The ingredients are obviously high quality, but it can be frustrating to spend $15 on a salad and a cup of tea.
I love coming here for their salads and soup! They have a little variety of deserts. Great service and bright atmosphere. I would recommend this place to friends.
Amazing! The mocha was great. Also tried two dishes : meatballs over mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy, and the vegan pizzette. Every bite was fantastic. Will DEFINITELY be back!
Bumped into this place today and thought I would give it a try. The meat pizza, with its artichoke hearts and ham was fresh and delicious. The adding of fresh greens was a nice, unexpected touch and accentuated the entire flavour. I also tried the cabbage soup which was hot and hearty with big chunks of cabbage, potato, carrots and celery. It had a slight spice to it along with the a tartness only cabbage can supply. Unfortunately, I had to take mine to go, and had to say no to a dessert. But I assure you, I will be back to sit down, and enjoy the experience to the fullest. A nice addition to Notre Dame for the person not wanting to go to one of the many fast food places in the area. Well done!
A very clean and modern decore. Super friendly staff and the best part is they truly understand gluten-free. Highly recommend trying this place if you're in the area of the Health Sciences Centre.
I am a very big meat eater, but I was satisfied with my meatless lunch here! I got the veggie chilli and it was great! Not super heavy like your usual meat chilli, and the corn bread it comes with was a very nice touch for some sweetness. I also got the potato Galette and it was decent. Super friendly staff and chill environment. Being inside the decore and layout made me feel like I was in the exchange. The only thing I didn't like was that the person in front of me beat me to the last sausage fennel roll, haha! Once things are gone, they are gone so best time to go would be around lunch I would say. I'll be going back to try more for sure.
I am in this area a lot so I am always looking for a different lunch option and BH fit the bill. The location is not the greatest but fairly convenient. To be honest I didn't expect much but was very pleasantly surprised. The inside is very bright, open and clean.
You walk in to a menu on the wall and a cold and warm food case on your left, order and pay at the counter and seat yourself. Cutlery and water available on a adjacent counter.
I have been many times and have tried several items to varying enjoyment.
Gluten free savoury quiches - these change every week, always a meat and vegetarian option. I have had maybe three different ones and enjoyed them all. The crust is fresh and always uniform. Filling is tasty and has a good texture. They top it with lightly dressed greens that add a nice freshness.
Potato galette - I had this the first time I visited and was very disappointed. I found the potatoes to be very hard, to the point where my knife was struggling to cut through. Shame because as a gluten free, vegan item it could appeal to a lot of people. Possibly it was just that particular slice I had and maybe experience has improved their recipe. I would consider a retry.
Sausage roll - this has got to be one of my favourite things I have had. It is simple but done so well. The sausage is thick but very well seasoned; with the fennel coming in strong but not overpowering. The pastry is flaky but not dry. I have even had it a day later reheated in a toaster oven and it was just as delicious. For $4.25 it makes a hearty breakfast.
Breakfast empenada - this was another pass for me. The dough itself was tasty but quite heavy. The filling distribution was very uneven; one side all filling and the other none at all. Taste was very bean heavy, and with the egg it had quite a mushy mouth feel throughout. Personally would not order this again.
Salads - The first salad I had was the one with the zucchini noodles. It was definitely fresh and healthy but halfway through I grew tired of the noodles. I much prefer the cobb salad which has the bacon and chicken to break up all the veg. The blue cheese is a nice tangy addition as well. Love the fact that you can choose your own dressing. I enjoyed both the Beverly, which isn't overly gingery, and the D'Arlington caper.
They also have a few desserts that I would be interested to try.
Overall I think this place is a success. They could stand to open up and vary a bit more in their menu but as they're still relatively new it;s a fine start. Their weekly specials are a good indicator as to what they could branch out to. Everything is home made and the owner(s) take a real interest in their customer's which gets them that extra mile. ( I have never had a bad experience customer service wise.) Bottom line, it's a local business, using local ingredients to make fresh tasty food. I could definitely see them expanding in the future.
Tried this place out for the first time today over the lunch hour and really enjoyed it. I had the Beet happening salad which was super delish and would definitely order again, my body feels rewarded! Also ordered a London fog and the girl who made it really knows her way around a steamer/espresso machine. The milk micro foam was perfect and so smooth. My only issue is that.. For a place with "beet" in it's name, I only noticed one dish/menu item that contained beets.. The salad that I had. I think you guys need to experiment more with the vegetable you so intimately attribute to your restaurant's name. How about a take on PEG Beer co's Beet pizza? A golden beet Borstch??
Easy walk from a course I was attending at HSC. The inside was clean, well decorated and much larger than I expected. I had the beet happening salad and chai latte. Both were really tasty. My latte was perfect and hand crafted at order. I loved that you get to pick your salad dressing. So many vegan choices. I will definetley be back. Limited hours but worth fitting into your schedule.
Great service, love the healthier gluten free and vegetarian options! One of my fave lunch spots under 15 bucks! For people with health concerns its a breath of fresh air. They are kind people this is what I want when go out to feel welcomed and valued.
I had to stop eating half way through my breakfast empanada because it was so good. Great service. Love this place. Recommend to everyone. Go early! The only negative reviews I have read.... are because they are sold out of everything they have. That's a good problem to have!
Love this delicious nook! Always have such great options for people with gluten sensitivity. Their lunch specials are always a delight. My favorites so far were the meat balls (was that fennel I tasted? So interesting) with sweet cabbage, roasted potatoes on a bed of arugula and the tomato bisque. I think the location is a bit tough for them, but I hope Winnipeg continues to eat here so they stay open!! Also, prices are reasonable, food is always fresh and healthy, and darn flavorful. Sometimes they do run out of their regular menu items for lunch but I haven't had that happen in the last couple of months.
Everything about Beet Happening is right on. Fresh food made with quality ingredients. Friendly and accommodating staff. Bright and welcoming environment. So glad to have them in the West End.
Love this place! So nice to have a restaurant near work (hsc) with healthy fast and delicious food. If the special doesn't tempt me - which is rare - I most often go for the roasted veg and grain salad or a veggie pizzette. Either way there's always something delicious on offer to make it worth that short walk! If I know I have a busy day in store, I sometimes pick up a salad and a coffee in the morning on my way to work ... and of course can't resist a breakfast treat as well.
Had a craving for the Beet Happening Israeli couscous & roast veg salad, it's the best. So good it keeps me from trying much else on the menu! Other favs are the breakfast empanada (flavourful, super filling) and the lemon curd parfait with house made granola. Been enjoying this place since it opened, just wish I was in the west end more often. Great to see their stuff at a few coffee shops downtown - esp. the lunch options. I want a Beet Happening lunch box subscription!
Amazing food! Delicious salads that are always fresh and leave you satisfied. Buttermilk scone with jam is my son's favourite - he's 2 and loves going to Beet Happening. Sweet, sticky single serving cheese cakes, too! A great place for lunch or breakfast, take away or or stay in. Atmosphere is bright, welcoming, fun, and airy.
I'm really liking the new crop of restaurants in Winnipeg. Beet Happening among them is a great lunch spot, or place to pop in for a snack. Great clean open bright atmosphere, high ceilings, big windows and local art. The pastries and treats (especially the lemon tarts) are all great. Still working my way through the sweets repertoire. Coffee is always fresh, staff is always friendly and food is always fresh and made with care. Their pastry chef is one of the best. Get a sausage roll! Yes, sometime what you want is sold out - but that's just the way it is. Choose something else, it will be great. Don't discount the salads either. The Beet Happening (namesake salad) is a hearty meal in itself.
This wonderfully decorated take-out/eat-in place has theeeee besttttt sausage rolls anywhere, as well, the gluten-free options are many and mouth watering too. Everything from the flaky crusts to the sweet fillings of the lemon tarts to the delectable salads (my fave is the one with wild rice) are made fresh and in house. This in and of itself is more than you can say about most places and the atmosphere will lift you up even on a gloomy day, but do grab a cookie and a coffee while your at it !
I love this place. Just a few houses away from my place. It's cozy and clean. Love the scones and empanada. Coffee is delicious too. First refill is free! I hope they'll be open on weekends too.
Beet Happening is a lovely place with it’s huge windows and high ceilings and unique art work. It has a very clean and fresh feeling. When you ask, every piece of art and equipment from the wall mural to the wallpaper to the water urn has a personal story.
It is an Oasis.
The food is very fresh and artfully presented. The salads and desserts behind spottless glass in a cold deli and the savory tarts, pizzettes, gallettes and specials in a hot one.The dilemma when seeing it all is choosing what to have.
Today a friend and I shared a vegetarian pizzette and the daily special. Both beautiful and delicious. The special today was a layered trio of roasted potatoes, a red cabbage mixture and meatballs topped with arugula. Who knew red cabbage could be so good. It was sweet and a little tangy and complimented both the potatoes and meatballs perfectly. I was tempted to lick the plate. The little topping of arugula is deliciously fresh and crisp, tossed with a light and tangy dressing. We ate it all.
Since my friend and I had not seen each other for some time we thought dessert and coffee was also in order. We shared a gluten free lemon tart and piece of cherry crumble. Once again fresh and yummy. We topped it off with a lattee for me and tea for my friend. Needless to say we both left with broad smiles on our faces.
Love this place! Went twice in one week and can't wait to go back! Very Kid friendly and our kids loved the food too and it's so healthy and fresh! Everything is so tasty, it's hard to choose from the menu! The savoury mushroom danish was delicious, flaky pastry, perfectly sauteed mushroom and onion, with a nice blend of lemon and herbs, one of our favs! Pizette are heavenly, perfect crust and pairing of toppings. Another favorite the Potato Galette, love the addition of salad on top, yum! Soups are filling and homemade, love dipping the house-made naan in. You can taste the time and skill, put into each meal and dessert. What is also nice is, so many of my friends have to eat gluten free food, now they have a place where they can enjoy a delicious meal.
Pleasant lunch spot. A comfortable restaurant with fresh food and intriguing selections. Excellent choices for vegetarian, vegan, and health conscious. Will be back.
Arrive early for options. I'd really like to like this place. I've been waiting for it to open for awhile and it's close to work. We arrived during the lunch rush, and as one reviewer pointed out, lots of options were sold out already at 12:15pm. When we left at 1pm, the only thing sitting in the display case were some meat pizzettes. However, I found if you asked, they would go check the back for more food and usually there was. They just opened up last week, so I'm sure they're still trying to figure out volume. The dining area isn't very big, so with the 25-30 people in there, we weren't sure if we could get a seat or not. I found the prices a little steep for the portion size, with most items priced about the $10 mark. It really feels like they put a lot into their food quality, and have options for vegans, vegetarians, celiacs, and people who avoid gluten for fun. I tried the meat pizzette, vegetarian pizzette, potato galette, and a Moroccan soup. The food was just okay, but not as satisfying as I'd liked. The pizzettes are small with not many toppings, comparable to focaccia bread with some seasoning. The potato galette I got was the last one in the display case and was hard, chewy and crunchy. I had to go back to the counter and check if that's how it was supposed to be. They happily brought me another from the back that was not rock hard. I'm not sure if mine was hard because it was overcooked or sitting out too long. All our food (except the soup) missed the mark on flavour. The food wasn't as enjoyable or satisfying as I'd have hoped. I think if I were on a restrictive diet or trying to eat clean it would be a good meal, but I'm not. The people working were all pleasant and helpful, but I was disappointed with the overall experience.
The soup of the day was a rich black bean soup. There were lots of solid ingredients in the broth. It hit a niceness balance of sweetness and spice. The pizzette featured a lot of sweet tasting vegetables, which nicely complemented the light and airy dough. The dough was exceptionally fresh tasting. As with the breakfast galette, arugula was available on top. Between these two they made for a satisfying lunch. Vegetarian Pizzette Half-order of Beet Happening Soup of the Day. While my lunch was satisfying I felt like a little something sweet to top it off. I went with a thumbprint and a chocolate cookie. Of the two I enjoyed the chocolate the most. It was melt in your mouth good. The thumbprint cookie is great for when you want something a little less sweet. Om-nom-nom as a certain blue creature says. I went slightly off peak hours both days. So, I can’t say how they will handle rushes. Service both days was excellent. The staff is friendly, and will take the time to walk you through what they have to offer. There is also a variety of seating arrangements from tables, a large booth, smaller booths and window front counter seating. You’re sure to find something you like. That goes for the food and the seating. If Beet Happening isn’t already on your dining calendar make sure you put it there soon. A couple of booths at Beet Happening
