Love this place. Our go to korean place. We love to order Gamjatang, Ddukbokki, Haemul Pajeon, Tofu Kimchi, and Beef bulgogi. Always here once a month!
Used to be our favourite Korean restaurant but not anymore. Now I can only give them 3.5. They used to serve authentic Korean food. Best place to have Gamjatang, the broth was flavourful, and delicious. However, it was not as good as before since the ownership has changed.
This is a cheap and tasty place to go for lunch or dinner! One of the best Korea restaurants in Winnipeg and even though the menu is minimal it's nothing but the best! Definitely a must try restaurant and don't forget to get the seafood pancake!
Simple and straightforward. Kimbaek is a great place to go to for Korean food with friends. The servers were friendly. The place was nice and clean. And the food is excellent. I highly recommend their Gamjatang and Beef Galbi to warm your stomach on a cold Winnipeg winter. The food is cheap too and can be shared with friends.
Sadly, there are only a handful of Korean restaurants in my city. If you want sushi, no problem, but delicious Korean food is a special treat. On Saturday afternoon, my good friend and I headed to our favourite Korean spot – Kim Baek and that day we ordered all our favourites, including free appetizers:
Kimbaek is one of my favorite korean restaurants here in Winnipeg! They have really good authentic korean food. The prices have gone up over the years but is still not that bad for something that is really good.
My favorites from here would definitely be Gamjatang and the beef bulgogi as well as beef kalbi! Their gamjatang is the best and if you love spicy food, this is definitely the one to try. Always come here once a month for my korean fix :)
The restaurant is quite small though but it's really cute for a kpop lover like me since the walls are filled with kpop posters and they also sell some kpop merchandise by the counter!

I have been to this place alot of times. I wont deny that they make the one of the best korean cuisines here in winnipeg. However, the area where it is located is really bad, there's not enough parking lot to park. When you get inside the restaurant, it looks old and not furnished. The new owner should atleast renovate and make it more inviting. The customer service is alright, when you ask for alot of side dishes which its suppose to be free, they would like to charge you if you will ask for more. For a regular customer, I find that not really good and that is a turn off. The old owner of the restaurant had never charged the customers for any side dishes, and theyre warm hearted giving side dishes no matter how many times you want. The new owners does not realize that in order for the regular customers to keep coming back is that they need to be nice and take care of their needs and not everything is about $$ how much everything cost, it will come natural if their customer service is really good.
Thank you Kimbaek for being the only (that I know of) Korean restaurant that strictly serves Korean food and not sushi. I know sushi is a great selling point - but this place sticks with what they know, and they know it well. Ordered the Gamjatang (seriously, the best) and my son had the Pork Bulgogi. We will definitely be coming back here again!
I have been here a couple of times already. They have a variety of choices for food, though they could use more flavour in it. The pricing is cheap and portion that you are paying for is pretty big. They have a really bad service though. The last time that I visited, they didn't even ask if I wanted water and when I did ask, she forgot so I had to ask again. It wasn't even rush hour that time!
Their gamjatang is my favorite. Just the right spiciness and not too bland. They serve meat in good amounts so it's worth the price. The servers are really friendly too although I believe they should add more servers for faster service. All in all this is my to-go place for Korean food.
Came here with the wife after church and since we were experiencing a cold snap we thought a couple of bowls of hot Korean soup would hit the spot.
With the new owners of Kimbaek, they are open Sunday's now and it was a good thing we came in early, the restaurant filled up near 1:00! The decor hasn't changed. It is drab and spartan, and the owners could do a better job with the cleanliness. Service was mediocre since there was only one waitress waiting the entire restaurant.
I ordered the army stew and my wife ordered the gamjatang (pork bone soup). Both were excellent and came piping hot with a rolling boil to our table. The soups came with the standard 4 banchan (side dishes) of bean sprouts, kimchi, seaweed, and stewed potatoes.
For what we got, the price was acceptable. I wouldn't consider eating at Kim Baek as a great deal, but we both enjoyed our soups so I think that is alright.
I really liked it, the food was very tasty and made with fresh ingredients, I would definitely go back! I recommend it, too bad I don't live close to go often
Really good food! I love their beef galbi/kalbi (however you spell it). They have different varieties and the quality is always great. Def recommend this place for Korean food!
First time trying this place out and its awesome! My friends have recommended this place to me and I wish I had tried it sooner. I ordered a bibimbap to go so I can eat it for my break at work. It had rice, carrots, zuccini, daikon and some marinated beef. It also came with a side of what I thought was just plain old siracha but it was korean hot sauce. Mixed the sauce with everything in the bibimbop, took a bite and omg it had so much flavor. I definitely reccomend this place to anyone who wants to try Bibimbap for the first time.

Best Gamjatang in the City. I'v tried many korean restaurants that serve gamjatang, but kimbaeks has to be my all time fave! Ive also tried their samgyupsal and its very flavourful!

My boyfriend and I went for Valentine's Day dinner and ordered bibimbap, seaweed soup with pork and jajangmyeon. After taking our ordered and writing down what we wanted to drink the girl left and never brought us water.. She returned about 10 minutes later to notify me that we couldnt have jajangmyeon and had to order something else so we ordered lunching rice. Our food actually came first and by the time it came we didn't really care about the water because we were so hungry. We had to ask for it in the middle of our meal and that was the first time we got it and it came in such a small glass we had to ask for more right away. Then the girl brought over a 1/5th of a pitcher and said do you want me to leave this here? To which I said yes please. My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed the bibimbap though and I really enjoyed the kimchi rice and when we tried the seaweed soup with pork it wasn't bland or too salty however I wished there was a little more meat. I can't be mad though because there was only two girls working and the chef in the back and it was busy.

Authentic. Small and unassuming, only those in the know are aware of this Korean hotspot.
Came on a Saturday night to a very busy restaurant. Ordered the spicy pork bulgogi, which is true to it's name. Very spicy but delicious nonetheless. Tender meat with caramelized onions and peppers in a heavy sauce. Their haimool pajun was crispy and light, and in my opinion a better version of the Japanese okonomiyaki. We also had the spicy pork belly which although tasty, was not only over powered by the spiciness of the bulgogi but paled in comparison to the soy sauce version. The savoury sizzling meat paired with the thinly sliced vinegary daikon was amazing and my favourite of the night. The sides were tasty and paired well with the spicy fare: cubed potatoes, sweet seaweed, bean sprouts, and of course kim chi.
Cons of the night:
We ordered a soup which I can't even name because it was that forgettable. Could have been more of a personal preference thing but we also found it pricey for the small bowl it came in. Will not be ordering again.
They were very understaffed. One lady taking and delivering orders and one other bussing tables. The lady serving was never out right rude but she was very rushed and would walk away to get what we asked for before we had even finished asking.
Each dish you order is meant to come with all four sides. We ordered four dishes so really should have received four of each, instead we got one set of sides. Fine. But when we asked for more, she either didn't hear us because she was already walking away, or she forgot, or even worse ignored us. It one of the worst feelings to feel like you, the customer, is bothering the server to ask for something you should have received.
Frankly, the food was delicious and authentic and I would return but it would be nice to get better attention as a paying customer.

I absolutely love this restaurant! I was looking for an authentic Korean restaurant in Winnipeg as I lived in Korea for 3 years. I've tried a few Korean restaurants and Kimbaek is the most authentic restaurant. I had soontofu stew and my friend had pork kalbi. We shared seafood pancake and all the dishes were fantastic!

I love this Korean restaurant. The gamjatung(spicy pork boneswith potato soup) is my favorite dish. The seafood pancake is full with seafood and crispy. The sweet sauce beef with noodles is tasty and good portion. I also like the add on side dish coz they will keep refill for you

One thing I didnt like is their service. Ive been here lots of time. we get good service if we're just like group of 3 or 4. But when I brought my other friends here, we said we're 8 in total... you can tell that the lady was upset. I dont know why. And she gave us a different look everytime she's serving us our order. Then one time we went there, we we're 14... there were still lots of room. Can definitely fit us all, or even more. But they said they cant accommodate us. Is it just me or do they not want lots of customer? lol.

Authentic, according to my friend. My friend wanted to go to a Korean restaurant since he lived in Korea for a few years. When we arrived at Kimbaek, we were in line for a table, with the restaurant packed with mostly Korean diners. As we were waiting, more people were flooding the entrance waiting to get in, which is always a good sign. We were able to order while in line, despite the fact that the waitress seemed overwhelmed. We ordered gamjatang, japchai, beef bulgogi and chicken bulgogi made with zesty sauce instead. My friend was very happy with the authenticity of the food. The dishes were flavorful and come with the customary rice and Korean side dishes like potatoes, green veggies, bean sprouts and kimchi. The japchai was my favorite, although it can be messy to eat, but the sesame flavor was very savory. The gamjatang was mildly spicy and very flavorful. There's a reason why this restaurant has such consistently good reviews.
Best authentic Korean food!. After numerous visits, this place still doesn't disappoint. From the outside, it looks like a little hole in the wall, on the inside, it screams family business and the food really reflects this. The flavours are always great and the service time is decent. For novices, I would start with the meat dishes/bibimbap and work your way up to the pork neck soup, glass noodles, and japchai.
The one thing I can't figure out is the Saturday hours. It says they open at 12pm but sometimes it's open, sometimes not. We sometimes see other people leaving the lot after finding out they're closed. It seems the majority of diners go in the evenings.
Number 6 is to die for mmm craving it! But wasn't a fan of the seafood dishes even though I enjoy seafood. Will be coming back! Service was on the slower side but friendly.

Beef bulgogi, japchai (glass noodles), haimool pajun (seafood pancake) are recommended. The meat dishes include rice. Complementary side dishes of potatoes, kimchi, bean sprouts, and seaweed are included... which they refill! We've had best service coming right when the restaurant opens, as some evenings were quite busy.

Best Korean in Wpg. In my humble opinion, and from someone who has lived in Korea for more than 2 years, this place has the best Korean food in Winnipeg.
I love this place! If you can overlook the very slow service you will find that their food is just amazing :) super delicious!!
Addicted.. I experience withdrawal symptoms if I don't come here for the gamjatang AT LEAST once a month... Everyone I bring here falls in love, all the dishes are packed with flavour, scrumptious!
Probably one of the best Korean restos in the city. Beef bulgogi is my fave!! Also try their Bibimbap, L.a Galbi, Japchae, Korean pancake and Gamjatang. I could eat here all day hehe ^^
Good Food but small portions. We had the pork bone soup, bulgogi, and seafood pancake. They raised their menu prices. Anyway, the bulgogi came in a disappointingly small portion. The seafood pancake was too greasy. The pork bone soup was good though. I would just stick to ordering the soup dishes next time.

Good gam ja tang and seafood pancake. Located in a shady area of town I am always cautious when I come to this restaurant. But I do come becuase I love their pork neck soup and seafood pancake. Service is nice friendly and as efficient as can be (when it is busy). The restaurant is clean but no the most comfortable, but I always feel at home when I have their food. I would reccomend this restaurant

Great Korean Food for the price. Visiting from Red Deer, AB which doesn't have a Korean Restaurant. Simple restaurant with good Korean food. Brought back memories of eating in Korea. Had the chapchai and the Bulgogi. The side dishes were good as well. Unfortunately, won't have time to try the other dishes.

YUM. DDukbokki was amazing, just a little too spicy for me but otherwise the sauce was beyond all expectations. Awesome deal with appetizers and the sweet drink included with the meal. Will definitely return! Definitely a great place for legit Korean food.
Super yummy! LA Ribs and seafood pancake are wonderful. I have to agree with other reviewers though; the beef bulgogi is quite disappointing - ours was tasty but far too tough and overcooked.
My go-to korean restaurant!. I have been going here for years! My favorite dishes are 1) japchae (glass noodles) 2) seafood pancake 3) bibimbap 4) kimchi soup. It is usually always packed when I go here for dinner but it is always worth the wait
One of the best Korean spots in town. This is on my top 3 list for Korean food in town. Probably #2. My rule of thumb is if you see mostly the same culture of people as the restaurant eating there, you've found an authentic place. Thats what I saw here and was not dissappointed with the food. It was very delicious. As noted before though, theres usually just 1 waiter so make sure to get attention and dont get too upset at it.
Good value. Kind of scary at night to haul out the babies from the suburbs. The waitresses are nice but there are some communication issues, there are also limited high chairs. Have gone there a few times and like it, always get the beef dishes. Love the glass noodles.
Best Korean Food in Winnipeg. This place is a staple for me when I'm craving spicy food. It's cheap and delicious. My favourite dishes include LA갈비 ("LA galbi," marinated ribs, not spicy); 비빔밥 ("bibimbap," rice with veggies and a bit of beef, add the spicy sauce to your liking, comes in a sizzling hot stone bowl); 오징어붂음 ("ojing-uh bokum," spicy squid stir fry); and of course all the various stews. All the dishes come with Korean side dishes like kimchi and marinated potato (so good!). Just thinking about it makes me want to go again tonight. A word of advice: get the server's attention if you want a refill, and just go up to the till when you want to pay. Waiting impatiently will get you nowhere.

A must try. Aside from the sketchy location, this place is awesome. The LA beef and Bone soup are a must!! As regular customers since they opened glad to see this place is finally getting some recognition.
I have to hand Kimbaek the prize as my favourite go to restaurant in Winnipeg. They make a mean Gamjatang and despite the burnt pancake, still remain a go to for me. Here's to what 2015 will bring!
