Review Vamos Tacos - Winnipeg

Ordered tacos for delivery, and I initially thought it was some sort of a joke. The diameter was maybe 4 inches with teeny bits of meat inside them, which sold for $3.50 which is shocking considering I wouldn't pay anything over a dollar for these. The picture doesn't do justice how pathetic it is.

Such a hidden gem! One of my favourite Mexican place in Winnipeg. Their chorizo is the best!!!!! Highly recommend.

Really tasty, fresh ingredients make delicious and authentic recipes. The lunch specials are filling and a great value. The restaurant itself is charming and clean. Most items do not include cheese, however it can be added for a minor fee if you'd like. I'll definitely return.

Went today for lunch. Was the first customer of the day as I arrived at 11:30. Heard the crew making my meal and it took an appropriate amount of time to be served to me. Got the chorizo enchilada which I'm sure isn't the easiest for them to make. Very tasty. Hot sauce is outstanding and also they give free chips and salsa. 10/10 recommend

The food is amazing. My favorite is the Al Pastor with cheese (ground pork and pineapple) burrito. One of the best food items I ever tasted. It comes with a side of rice, tomatoes, lettuce and sour cream. Family run business. Lunch specials are very affordable. We also tried the taco and the quesadillas and both are very good. The restaurant is very charming with a Mexican theme. Fun for a evening of drinks and tacos. One of our favorite places.

The food was good but very small portions. Cheese was extra for the taco. No choice for the tortilla. Corn tortilla is what we got. The salsa was tomato paste. Yuuck. Chips were good. The waiter gave us good service and was a nice fella. They had Mexican Music, that was great.

The restaurant is quite quaint, located in Island Lakes. The atmosphere was great, though it was fairly empty (we went mid afternoon so we expected that), the food was delicious we had their Vamos bowl and Burrito lunch specials. The service was a bit slow and it was difficult to hear our waiter as the radio was quite loud, but overall I would go back for their lunch specials

While you cannot compare this place to more authentic establishments or stand alone burrito joints in the city this certainly fills a much needed gap in Mexican styled cuisine in the south end. Portion sizes match the price and the flavor and heat 🌶 is definitely there. I’ll be back to try out their items.

Positive first time trying Vamos Tacos via Skip the Dishes! We got a variety to try: carnitas (pork), barbacoa (beef) and chorizo (ground spicy pork sausage) tacos, and a chicken enchilada, along with rice and refried beans.

As is sometimes the case, our delivery guy slaughtered our food by not taking care with transport, so the rice and beans got everywhere, but it was clear that it had been carefully packed by the restaurant and messed up in delivery.

The tacos: overall, good, but not great. Each were well seasoned, but carnitas and barbacoa meat were both on the dry side, though flavourful. Chorizo had a nice kick, much more generously spiced than expected and not greasy at all to the point where these too could have used some added moisture. All three came with lettuce, diced tomatoes and sour cream to add. Barbacoa had added raw onion (too much) and a taste that reminded me of rewarmed leftovers, they were the least favourite and definitely not worth the extra $1 for three. I’d be interested to try the El Pastor, chicken and ground beef next time.

The enchilada: super delicious! Loved the tasty, smoky red sauce, chicken was moist and deliciously seasoned, added peppers and onions were unexpected but very welcome. The highlight of the meal, I suspected I’ll be craving it in the future and will definitely order this again.

The vamos bowl is sooo good!! At first I was hesitant about the place, but the food definitely is good. My boyfriend had the trios tacos and it looked a little meager but he liked it! And three makes it filling. I also got a beef burrito to go for my sister and she said it was delicious! We had jarritos to drink which were nice and cool. The overall place is nice. But the smell is very pungent and stays on you once you leave. The owners are soo sweet.

Had the place to ourselves on a Friday at prime time so I was a little worried. We were in for a pleasant surprise as the service was fast, friendly and helpful. The true highlight was the food! Had the burrito bowl and an enchilada and they were freshly cooked, full of flavor and the best Mexican I've had in winnipeg.

This place has really delicious food. The owners are really friendly and passionate about their food. It's much tastier than any of the chain options I've had in the city. Fresh and made with care!
Absolutely delicious. Beats anything Mexican in the area. Good was fresh and fantastic. I had the empanadas and the tacos left wanting more. Will absolutely be back

My wife and I really enjoy this place. Everything is unpretentious, from the decor to the service. They're eager to please, and quick, but they give you space to breathe and chat.

The prices are very reasonable, and I find the portions to be "just right". Usually I leave with just enough leftovers for a midnight snack.

So far I've found the food to be delicious and surprisingly subtle in flavour. I'm not particularly worried about whether it's authentic - only if it tastes good. I especially enjoy the empanadas and the churros.

I've been there three times and every time I've left full and happy.

It doesn't look like much from the outside but the food was excellant and a bit different. The pork soup blew me away. If nothing else go for desert and eat the chocolate burrito. It is has the perfect chocolate filling and is served with whipped cream and ice cream. Soo good.

Weird place! But don't let that fool you!! It is on my top list for Mexican food! What a great little hideaway! Loved it!! Tamale was just as good as Mexico, don't ask for salsa ask for the pico it is yummy! Chips, homemade! Had the shared fajita (beef) filled us both up! I hope they keep it up. JC tacos still is best, but this little funky place comes in a easy second!

It was okay. I got the carnita enchilada, but it's really a fajita. Maybe because I've had too much authentic Mexican food to compare to. It's good enough for Mexican food in a city that doesn't have anything. Chips and salsa are good and they offer a lot of authentic Mexican sodas and drinks.

My date and I ate in the restaurant on sat 5pm. The server was an older asian dude. Very quiet but polite. We thought he was awesome. Ordered beef and carnita (shredded pork) soft tacos. The soft tortilla is freshly made. We enjoyed them immensely!!

Shared a Quasadilla. We stopped by on a whim to try out authentic Mexican food. The restaurant was quaint and the service was great (although there was a bit of a language barrier). The two of us split the Tacos and Quasiddila to share item and washed it down with two Jarritos.
If you're looking for a small, clean place to kick back and snack in Mexican fare then I'd recommend Vamos Tacos.

Cheap. What can you expect , this is Winnipeg not Mexico. 34 $
For a 1 1/2 cups of salad, 1/2 cup of rice and 2 vegi enchilado (sauce cheese onions peppers) no spices no beens nothing. This is for two people! !!!!
Sorry there is only one place in Winnipeg burritos splenditos.
Don't waste your money , trust me!!!!!!

Taco Trio (Beef). Really great food.

My first time at this restaurant was wonderful, the service was top notch. First, they brought house made taco chips with amazing salsa which were unlimited (we had 2 bowls) and once we ordered our drinks and food they came very fast. The lemonade was very tasty and the vamos bowl with ground beef was amazing! I would definitely recommend this place for great Mexican food and wonderful service :)

Best Mexican Restaurant !. The food was very fresh & the service was fantastic! I would definitely recommend it !

Disappointed ! Very weak Mexican flavor ... Taco Delmar is better, that's how bad it was. Too expensive for the amount of food that you get.. No flavor, food sucks ! Never coming back !

I placed a walk-in pickup order and the proprietor brought me chips and salsa while I was waiting. I ordered chicken enchiladas and it was ready in about five minutes. Speed and service - two thumbs up.

However, I question the authenticity of my meal and whether or not I actually received the right food. For starters, the menu description states that the enchilada is covered in homemade red sauce, but unfortunately there was no tomatillo to be found.

Secondly, I have eaten chicken enchiladas in a variety of restaurants in Canada and the U.S. (as it's one of my favourite dishes.) Never once have there been chunks of grilled onions and green pepper in my tortilla. It's always only filled with white shredded or pulled chicken, then covered in cheese and enchilada sauce. My meat had been so browned, I thought it was beef. I thought I was eating a fajita. It was tasty, but it wasn't what I ordered.

I'd be interested in returning to try other menu items for further comparison.

Second try and won't be back. Two of us went this past summer and thought it was quite good. We tried it again January 28th. First we were brought chips and hot sauce (no salsa)- the chips tasted rancid and oily, as though they had either been sitting around for a very long time or that they were cooked in rancid oil. My husband had the beef tacos and I had the chicken taco salad. His was $10.99, mine $13.99. His beef was over-cooked and the refried beans were so very runny and tasteless that we were sure they added water to them. He said the rice was good though. My salad was very over-priced at $13.99. It was the typical tortilla bowl but just 1/4 filled with a little shredded rusty lettuce, a few chopped anemic tomatoes, 6 very small pieces of chicken (the size each of a marble), a sprinkle of shredded cheese and a dollop of sour cream- no pico de gallo as stated. It was less than mediocre. I've had better fast-food salads and for less. If it had only been, for example, $7 or $8 instead of the $14, the quality was still very poor. I am surprised at the good reviews here. The server/owner was pleasant enough although in-attentive. We will not go back. *Still on the hunt for GREAT Mexican food!

Good food, good service, owners eager to please. Vamos Tacos is a little hole-in-the-wall kind of place.....it doesn't really look like much....it's a mix of mexican knick-knacks in what looks to be an old pizza place.....but I was very pleasantly surprised with some of the better Mexican food I've had in Winnipeg.

My wife enjoyed her enchilada, while I thoroughly enjoyed my tostada trio. All ingredients were fresh and tasty, with generous servings all around. The refried beans tasted home made, and weren't dry and pasty as in most places.

The house-cooked chips were awesome, but I do agree with a previous review that the bottled salsa could be better....though certainly not a big deal.

We also sampled the Vamos Soup. Very interesting. It was a delicious broth, full of big chunks of veggies and chicken. Great as it is, it's 75% of the way towards being an incredible tortilla soup.......all that would need to be done would be to add some hominy corn, some lime, some avocado slices, sour cream, and a handful of those delicious home-made chips.......now THAT would be amazing!

It's a mom-and-pop shop, with her in the back, and he up front. Both were very friendly and happy to share their offerings.

Anyway, I'll definitely be back for more.

Amazing food!!!. I've eaten here a few times and have picked up orders! The food is absolutely amazing! I've tried the burrito and their poutine and its so delicious! Best poutine in winnipeg!! Highly recommend trying it out!!

Great taste :). I was a little worried walking to the restaurant as it looks a little run down but I was pleasantly surprised, I had the vamos bowl with ground beef and it was so good, the rice and beans were really rich in taste and the lettuce added the perfect crunch the meat was melt in your mouth great, the portion size was perfect just satisfying enough, they gave me this green hot sauce, it tasted like it had some avocado and lime maybe, i don't know if that was traditional Mexican because I never saw anything like it when I was down there but man it was so good! The chips were great, exactly like in Mexico and so fresh, if I have a criticism or would be that they should bring in a more traditional salsa for the chips as theirs was very american style wet salsa. Also my waiter was really awkward, older gentleman, his English wasn't great and I found he always lingered at our table which was really off putting, granted we were the only people in the restaurant but it was still a little weird, he was nice enough though :) already thinking of taking my friend as I saw they offer some gluten free options which is great to see in such a small business.
I believe from my Spanish classes that Vamos means Let's go, and all I want to do is go there again :)

Looks can be deceiving! Open mind means a happy belly!. I'm a Sous Chef at a major Winnipeg establishment and Vamos Tacos was so good that I found it necessary to create an account just to let Winnipeg know.
My fiancee and I came to this place because we got a very well done flyer with a 10% off coupon attached. It wasn't valid on a friday or saturday...we went on a friday. No big deal.

It's a very tiny place and only 2 other people were there, so we were greeted and seated quickly. The place was amazingly clean, even what I saw in the kitchen. Spotless. The chips and salsa was brought out right away and was very tasty. The salsa wasn't spicy enough to kill our palates.

We each started with a Papusa. They were very good. The bread was crispy and the cheese was creamy and flavourful. The red sauce on the side was tasty but weak in flavour. A shot of the hot sauce that was on the table was exactly what it needed! The coleslaw on the side was probably the best slaw I've ever had. Flavourful, sweet and tangy. I'm going to see if I can get the recipe out of them next time we go....

I ordered the Vamos Enchilada and she ordered the Tostadas, both with the Al Pastor meat (pork with spiced sauce, pineapple and onions). The portion sized were perfect. Not gargantuan American style portions but not small enough to make you feel ripped off. The entrees were absolutely incredible. The side of rice was tasty and the pico de gallo was a perfect mix of flavour. I could take or leave cilantro but the pico was an example of the perfect use of it.

The enchilada...ooohhhh boy the enchilada. Perfect mix of meat, veg, tortilla and sauce. The bell peppers had a little bit of crunch left and everything was in perfect balance. Ever bite was a big hit of flavour. The sauce was velvety smooth with a nice tang of chilis. The only thing I found odd was that it was ground pork instead of the traditional thin slice. No big deal since the flavour was definitely there.

My fiancee's Tostadas were equally as good. The veg was crisp and fresh, the sauces had a ton of flavour and the meat was excellent.

I highly recommend the trip. Vamos is priced at a point where you can easily spend less than $30 for 2 people

I couldn't agree more with the previous post that this is one of the top mex places in the city. I also agree that I curious how the food would be as the owners/employees are Asian. (No offence but you know how we make assumptions) Forget those assumptions, the food has been fantastic each time I've ordered from there. I get takeout as we live a few streets away. Usually get carnitas or chicken burritos and chicken quesadillas and just started getting the enchiladas and love them. I'm very picky when it comes to restaurants but I'm always happy with my food here. Previous comment about mushy burrito....maybe too much juice from the meat or too much wet lettuce for your liking, but that's what I've had at all good Mexican places here and in Mexico. It's not fast food or gas station crap here. Owner gave me some complimentary nachos and salsa while waiting for takeout. Great touch, authentic and flavourful. In laws were over tonight and they are more of the "steak and potatoes" type, but man they loved the food. Try the enchiladas, perfect amount of sauce and sour cream on top, perfect amount of fillings. Quesadillas are great for the kids. Although it seemed virtually the same after it changed from JC's, I found an improvement in quality. Although there are not tones of choices on the menu, those food shows all you need is a handful and do them right. Vamos does for us and we give it two thumbs up.

Fried Icecream. Yummy! :P

Wow- this place was pretty good. Driving up, I was not expecting much. Its a hole in the wall in a strip mall and when the Asian kid came to take our order, I probably expected even less. Shame on me....

Now Ill throw this in here right now.... my wife and I vacation in Mexico twice yearly. We KNOW Mexican food.

I was shocked when they brought out complimentary nachos and salsa. The chips were real, deep fried to order tortillas just like in MX, and the salsa was a rich, deeply smoky but vibrant homemade version. Wow- wasn't expecting that. Three refills of this.

Then we ordered the "For Two" platter of a large burrito and two tacos. We had barbacoa beef in the burrito which was seriously almost good enough to make me cry. It was so close to what we would expect to find in Vallarta. Tender, moist and bursting with roasted beef flavour. Perfect. And the tacos..... excuse me waiter, are these homemade corn tortillas? Yes sir they are. Serious? Wowsers. We had the carnitas tacos, which is slow roasted shredded pork. They were also really REALLY good. And contrary to a previous review here, while they offered their homemade salsa at the table, they also had a bottle of Mexican habanero hot sauce on each table. I know it is Mexican because I have bought the same sauce at the supermarket in PV. Maybe that person just didn't know any different.

Side note- they are licensed and offer Sol, Corona, Dos Equis among others, along with Margs and Jarritos sodas.

We've already agreed that we are going back to try a few more items. We really enjoyed our meal and thought it might be in the top 3 of authentic tasting MX-Latino food here in Winnipeg right behind Bimi and Mercadito. Certainly NOT part of the JCs Tacos group that's for sure.

Cuatro cervesas de cada cinco!

Not impressed. Burrito was mushy mess. They charge .75 extra to sprinkle a tiny bit of cheese. Employees were plaing on their cell phones. Flavour was not there only hot sauce was a Caribbean habanero sauce nothing Mexican.
