Congratulations on coming back to business after the unfortunate breakdown of the oven. Not mentioning the great taste of pastries, the atmosphere of the store, friendly service, and the smell of freshly baked bread give me sense of peace. Thank you.
We stopped just just after noon and picked up the matcha brioche, rhubarb glazed croissant, hazelnut chocolate croissant and an almond cream croissant. All were really good and not super sweet as I'm not into over sugary pastries- and you can tell it's more a higher end bakery. A little over $3 a pastry which is reasonable for the quality and it's of good quality. We were promptly greeted by a friendly young man as well and learned of course the chef is French. They use the best grade matcha and ingredients. They've advised they'll have future seating for the bakery soon. Would definitely come back when we are in the area.
Living in Winnipeg The Thaw is always welcome. It signals the end of winter and the arrival of spring and more enjoyable weather. Well, now Winnipeg can enjoy the thaw year round. I’m talking about The Thaw French Bakery which opened last December on Pembina Highway, just north of MacGillvray Avenue.
Loved it! Got a bunch of croissants and absolutely loved them! A bit on the expensive side but that is to be expected! Will deffinetly go back!
Tasty and well made goods. We were there Sat midday and fresh warm bakes were still coming out warm from the back. Staff knew the product. We'll be back.
Stopped by at this place last Saturday after lunch and almost of their pastries are sold out. That's how busy the place was. I ended up getting the matcha brioche, the freshly four berries cheese croissant, cinnamon with spinkled coconut on top and the small slice of matcha green in color- can't remember what it's called-lol. All was very good! Staff was very friendly and informative about their pastries and ingredients. Be back to try other pastries.
Very cute bakery shop. I dropped by for the matcha brioche, black truffle focaccia, and taro coconut bun.
I love the matcha brioche as it is fluffy and the crunch on the outside just makes it that much better. My only complaint would be that the photo (in stores) shows more matcha cream than there really is. My brioche was quite hallow inside with only a thin layer of cream. The taro coconut pastry is also very good as there is a generous amount of coconut and it is not overly sweet.
I didn't enjoy the black truffle focaccia very much, and neither did the rest of my family. I think the brothwell cheese on top is too overwhelming for my liking. In this case, unlike the matcha bun, I really did not enjoy the crunch on top.
Overall, I would come here again and I hope to try their croissants next!
After hearing about this new bakery that opened in the Fort Garry area, I've been wanting to pay the place a visit. I was heading back home and since I would be driving past the area, the hubs and I decided to stop by. We got there around 2:30 pm. Majority of the pastries had already been sold out, but there were still some available such as the matcha brioche and black truffle focaccia, which we ended up getting. It turns out that the bakery was reviewed in the Winnipeg Free Press today with a perfect score of 5/5 stars, which may be the reason why most pastries were gone.
We bought 2 matcha brioche and 1 black truffle focaccia which came up to a total of about $15. I think the price is definitely worth it. The matcha brioche had the perfect amount of matcha in it and the cream/custard in the center was good and not overly sweet, though I wished there was more of it. The brioche itself was super soft and moist and the crust on top was not overly sweet (reminded me of Chinese pineapple buns). The black truffle focaccia was also super soft and moist and had plentiful of black truffles in it. My favourite part of the focaccia was the smoked Bothwell cheddar crust on top. Aside from the black truffle and cheddar, the focaccia also had peppers, olives and garlic infused within.
I definitely recommend giving this place a try, and I am planning to return to try all the other pastries I had missed during this first trip there.
They are open Tues-Sun from 10:30 am to 8:30 pm.
I rarely ever write reviews, but this place was so good that I had to write one. The pastries were amazing, some of the best I've ever had. Some may say that they're a bit pricey, but you literally get what you pay for. The quality is really good. I can't wait to go there again and try more of their things.
Tried this Taro Coconut Brioche from Them, it's sooooo good! I haven't tried such tasty buns since I came to Winnipeg. It's reminds me of the best breads I had back in China a few years ago.
OMG this place is absolutely pastry heaven. This place does not sell frozen baked goods as I would have assumed with the name. It's a beautiful bake shop that sells the most delicious breads and pastries. They have super interesting flavours like matcha croissant though there weren't any when I was there. I've tried the cheddar cheese onion lodeve ($2.44), chocolate hazelnut croissant ($3.77), regular pain au chocolat and another cheese croissant. Very flakey buttery croissants that leave me craving more. The pain au chocolat had nice piece of chocolate inside and the hazelnut one had real hazelnuts inside with the chocolate. The cheese flavours are very strong - they don't skimp on the ingredients thought the size of the croissants are slightly smaller than the usual shop.
The service is super nice and informative. Both times I've encountered the happiest staff who were only too enthusiastic to talk about the products. They sell matcha latte, regular latte and coffee.
