We have been frequent customers at Honba for years. In fact, after each of our children were born at St.Boniface my first request was sushi from Honba! We have never had a problem, service is always reliable, prices decent and sushi great! The size of their rolls are generous too.
Excellent place to pick up sushi. The Avocado rolls have a very generous amount of perfectly ripened avocado. I stopped in here several times while having treatment at St Boniface Hospital and each time my order was prepared quickly and deliciously. There’s not much seating and all tall chairs, so I would not dine in here, but excellent for takeout.
I work at the hospital and I always come here for lunch when I feel like it. Overall, great experience and service. Never been unsatisfied with quality of sushi. I would say order ahead of time if your planning to eat in because there may be others waiting in line with you when you arrive. Usually only two people working. Husband and wife, I believe.
Was at the hospital and needed a quick bite to eat for lunch. The sandwich shop next door was utterly packed so I decided to give Honba a try. Am I ever glad I did!
This place is mainly counter service with only a few bench and a couple of tables to sit at. Service is super quick and they really try to accommodate. Communication is somewhat difficult, but they make it all up with effort.
I came in and tried the salmon bowl. This is the first time I've had a salmon don with so much stuff in it. I was leery at first, but the flavors worked together very well. I will definitely be back to try something else on their menu.
I placed a takeout order on their website. They had to call me to confirm the order, which happened in about 8 minutes, and the website said within 10, so that is good. They also said the order would be ready in 20 minutes, which it was, right on time.
I ordered 2 rolls, bakudan tuna and sumo, and salmon nigiri. The sumo was really tasty and fresh. The bakudan was excellent as well. The only complaint on that is the hot sauce stuck to the takeout lid on a few pieces. The salmon nigiri was a perfectly made, 2 bite size, with very fresh salmon. The texture and flavour of the fish was as good as I've ever had.
Overall, the value was very good for what I ordered, staff was friendly, restaurant was clean, and my order was ready within the timeframe they provided.
good food, slow service. the sushi was pretty good, pretty typical. but it took forever to get pur food. would definetly recommend although I'd recommend ordering in advance
Deluxe Platter. I ordered the deluxe platter for a birthday party- it was so good. Fresh, tasty and looked beautiful, There was five of us and we ate the whole tray, although we shouldn't have- we ended up very full. I would definitely recommend them and will order again.
We ordered for pick up an assortment of rolls, sushi, tempura and miso soup.
It was very good.
I can tell the restaurant makes an effort above and beyond other sushi take out restaurants in winnipeg based on two simple, but important facts:
1) they trimmed the tempura takeout box so that steam can escape and keep the fresh tempura from going soggy. Instead, theirs was deliciously warm and CRISPY!
2) They FRY the tempura on the bakudan roll. Other restaurants will simply sprinkle raw tempura (basically like raw bread crumbs) over the rolls. Honba went the little extra step and did it properly.
Everything else was tasty and high quality as expected, but the fact they made the extra effort very few winnipeg sushi restaurants take to improve quality means we will ONLY ORDER FROM HONBA from now on.
Go for the lunch special since it's close to work! So good and fresh!
Best Sushi place for a quick lunch. I have been to this restaurant many times for lunch. Service has ALWAYS been friendly. Not everyone who works there speaks English as a primary language so sometimes patients is a virtue. Price point wise I'd say the are about average within the city but I would say quality and freshness puts them up at the top. Chirachi Donburi and Sunomono salad are a must try!
Overpriced and rude. Asked to use washroom and female server was so rude. Won't be back.
Today we had spider and crispy sake , dinamite, rainbow.... It was so~~delicious. I think honba sushi is more delicious without soy sauce... I love honba sushi !
Great Sushi in St. B. Decided to finally give this place a shot. I am a big eater and found their rolls/portions slightly on the small side, but they were packed with flavor and fresh. Service was good, friendly. Though this point is probably obvious, it turned out to be a much better choice than stopping at neighboring Subway which was the original plan. While it hurt the wallet quite a bit more, very good choice if you're looking for a quality place to get sushi.

Nice to find a good sushi place in St. B. There's not a lot of sushi restaurants in St. Boniface area but this one turned out to be quite decent. It's located in the big strip mall where the Shoppers and McDonalds are located on Goulet. This place is small, has about 3 tables and 2 bar style tables that are against a wall. This place is meant for mostly take out orders. The interior is small but nicely decorated and is run by a small Korean family. There's even some decorative tea cups, chopsticks and other small things you can buy as well.
They get busy at lunch so I suggest pre-ordering your items if you don't want to wait around. They have a $8.45 lunch special that runs from 11 am-2 pm that includes a drink or miso soup and 2 rolls (from a set list). There's a good mix of cooked and raw rolls so it's a pretty good deal.
My favourite roll is the "rendezvous" ($4.95) - it has tuna, salmon, avocado, massago, mayo and spicy sauce. Yum - great flavours that complemented each other! Their rolls are all very well priced ranging from $3.95 to $13.95 with most in the $4.95 range. They don't tend to have toro whenever I am there so that's too bad. I've had the salmon sashimi (3 pcs for $3.95), it was bland and watery. But I really liked the "goma tuna salad" ($4.95) - it's a great little salad with lots of chunky pink tuna and avocado in there. The special sauce tasted like diluted soy sauce to me but I liked it.
I like that they have a VIP Point Card system (similar to Wako on Corydon) - you pay $0.50 to join the first time and then you earn 3% of your pre-tax order price as your "reward." The server wasn't super clear but I think when you just earn up to a point when you feel like you can use the accumulated reward amounts towards something on the menu.
Service is really nice but once again if you're going at lunch, it can be a tad long so order ahead! Glad I found this place!

Our favourite Winnipeg sushi place!. My Wife and I have been coming here since Honba first opened - Sushi quality is exceptional and they are very consistant with the quality and freshness of food, unlike a lot other places which are hit or miss. Altogether we've been to over sushi restaurants in Winnipeg alone..this is our favourite.
Service has always been great. We're always greeted very kindly by the staff and the chefs always thank us on our way out. Best to call in advance to place your order if you don't wish to be kept waiting while they make your food.
Honba Sushi is more of a takeout place, there is some seating inside but not very much; I don't consider this a negative, but rather the type of establishment they have chosen.
It takes about $25 (after tax and tip) to fill me up. This nets me 4 rolls and Sunomono salad; which is about what I spend at any other sushi establishment.
I highly recommend the Sunomono Salad (It's not a lettuce salad, but rather has thin rice noodles, julienned cucumber, a choice of a couple types of seafood all in a sweet-vinegary liquid.

Better than the reviews had lead me to believe!. My friends and I were going to lunch and one of them picked Honba, like the good little Urbanspooner I am, I obviously checked them out first and based on previous reviews I was expecting some dive.
Honba is in the little strip mall at the corner of Main and Goulet and it's a tiny little place. When you go in, there is a table on the left that could seat approx 8 people and then there are two tables pushed against the walls and front glass. The tables are higher and more like bar seating but they're not at the sushi bar itself, which is the impression I got from other reviews.
I ordered my usual favourite, a bakudan roll, and also ordered a crispy sake roll. Strangely enough, to me anyhow, they added cucumber to the bakudan and I was not a fan. Contrary to my first couple of bites, the sake roll was a knockout! I loved it and ate it all up but left 1/2 of my bakudan.
One of my dining partners ordered edamame beans and when the girl at the front noticed we were done, she brought around another small bowl to share on the house.
Another misconception I had from previous reviews are that they serve everything in styrofoam. This isn't entirely true. They serve your sushi on platters, they just have small styrofoam plates for you to use for your own when you're sharing. True, they're not particularly eco friendly, but they're certainly not awful.
The prices were decent and the fish was good quality, I won't blame the restaurant b/c I don't like cucumber in my bakudan. I enjoyed my experience at Honba and enjoyed that they have barley tea available for free with your meal. It wasn't my favourite sushi place but I just might make my way back just for another crispy sake roll!

You Know..... When I first tried HONBA I wasn't sure it was all that great.....but now after having tried several Winnipeg sushi establishments that are down right terrible, I am giving a thumbs up to this place. No, it is not quite the same as sushi in Vancouver or NYC, so there isn't a public washroom, so they aren't environmentally friendly per say but bottom line, the sushi is decent. I have no problem with the rolls, sashimi is usually good quality (though have had to send the Maguro back once) and they customize my sushi order by making me spicy tuna handcones (without any mayo). Rice barley tea is free and I enjoy sitting in the window reading the free city paper while eating my sushi, reminds me of Vancouver ! And most importantly the sushi rice is cooked properly. Service has always been friendly since I started going 6 months ago.
This place is more of a take out restaurant. There are some tables with communal seating. They have a hot water dispenser serving barley tea that is complimentary.
We ordered an assortment of rolls to take home as well as 2 salads and a miso soup.
I felt everything was good. The rice isn't the best, but most sushi places in Winnipeg aren't... The fish to rice ratio is much better here than at other restaurants. I also like that they cut their rolls smaller so it's easier to eat.
It's one of the better ones in the city. Not a lot of high end stuff but if you want a solid experience with the Staples, this is a good choice. Pricing is reasonable for what they were offering (not expensive, not cheap).
Service was pretty much non existent. They were polite but do not speak much English.
Always take delivery from the store. In my mind this s top1 sushi in wpg. Love it. And always patience. Offer me ex piece salmon Nigiri. Tasty. Love Love love☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
I thought I knew good sushi for decades. I tried this place today and I was in heaven! This sushi melts in your mouth with freshness. Everything was packaged nicely, and they even added a mandarin orange and a candy to the delivery order! Don't pass on this place! Expensive but worth it. Keep up the good quality!
Had my fair share of sushi from a bunch of different restaurants and thought I had my favourite locked down... until I tried Honba Sushi. I swear it was some of the best sushi I have ever had! The nigiri and rolls were so flavourful, and quite generous portions for the price. They had a lot of great Vegetarian options and also some really different roll combinations which I liked. Highly recommend trying this spot out if you are wanting to try something different!

Best chopped scallop roll and salmon/fatty salmon nigiri I’ve had in a long time. Melt in your mouth and very hearty pieces. This is going to become my new go-to sushi place
