Review Yan Yan - Winnipeg

Best tasting Chinese food I've had in years. Everything was cooked to perfection. Didn't even need any extra sauces on our food flavor stands alone. Will definitely be ordering from them again! 😋

Ordered the family pack for 6. It was huge. All the dishes came filled to the top. The beef and veggies had about a pound of beef, the chicken fried rice was huge and not too salty, the chicken with broccoli was another example of huge and delicious, the chicken rice noodles was really amazing but needed sugar and a little oyster sauce, the chicken balls were huge and packed with chicken, the free pork sweet and sour was amazing (over $65 you get this free), and last but not least the breaded shrimp was almost 15 shrimp tempuras. We all got two huge white rices and 6 spring rolls. Everything was monster size the six of us felt that was so much value and quality. The winner was shrimp

BEST..best..BEST wonton hot and sour soup… seasoned brilliantly, the pepper is distinct, the wontons are HUGE and wonderfully tender Not greasy at all… the deep fried breaded shrimp REALLY showcase the freshness, you can tell they clean their fryers regularly and often, clean oil Only downside, I live in St B and you’re SO far away, luckily I’ve recently found you (Jan/Feb) I would honestly drive that super long distance for that soup alone, let alone everything helps Oh ya, DELICIOUS onion rings !!!

We ordered several dishes for delivery. The young lady on the phone was so helpful with quantity and flavours. Our order was about 30 minutes before arrival on a busy Friday night. All the food was hot, including the chicken balls which can be soggy. These were very crisp and hot. The whole experience was just excellent! Would definitely recommend.

Our go to for Chinese food, always terrific. Friendly staff, never had a bad experience, even on busy nights like New Year’s Eve. Highly recommend.

Foods great, portions where good, and service was excellent. Will be one of my go tos when in the city

Had this for our first time and it was incredible, good price, hot food, was exactly what I was craving! 100% going back! The lady who delivered was beyond friendly and was so nice, all around great!

New Year's Eve order got delivered on time but food was sub standard. Hot and sour soup was like thin pudding with too much cornstarch. Very little shrimp or meat. We ordered 2 spring rolls but neither were edible and got spit out. Sesame crispy pork was not crispy nor reminiscent of sesame. No one particularly wants the leftovers. Won't be back, sorry.
Yan yan offers standard Chinese dishes, standard service, standard delivery options.

It provides these reliably and at market-competitive prices.

It doesn't stand out from the crowd but it seems that they have no intent or interest in doing so ... just do what you do, do it well, and carry on.

Visited November 2016

Food and service were excellent. The pork dumplings were the best I ever had. They were deep fried and the perfect crispness. The beef and mixed vegetables were also delicious. This could be my newest favourite restaurant!!

April 2016:
Ordered take out from Yan Yan last night and ordered some of the dishes we have already tried and love as well as some a new dishes.

- hot honey garlic breaded veal (the breading was falling off the meat and not as good as last visit)
- hot fried vermicelli with shrimp and pork (a new dish tried, and not impressed! The shrimp in the dish was not fresh at all. I took one bite, nearly gagged and spit it out instantly. It was very fishy tasting and agh I can't even describe the taste that came with the fishy taste.... There goes that dish)
- yan yan chicken (this was the highlight out of all the dishes, yet I can't say it was that great or the competition was there...)
- beef with mixed vegetables (no flavor, bland, and the 1/4 cup of beef in the dish and pieces of cauliflower with blackened stems/florets wasn't appealing either)
- chicken fried rice was good

What the heck happened tonight!? Not impressed at all and disappointed with the quality this visit. I'm not sure if we'll be rushing back anytime soon if at all. I get there may be off days but when I'm spitting food out, there's something wrong.
Previously rated 4...
---------------------------------------------
Feb 2016: Ordered from Yan Yan Restaurant this evening and was impressed yet again with their food and the service. Picked up a variety of dishes and we were all happy with the food (taste, portion sizes).
We ordered the Hot Honey garlic breaded veal, yan yan chicken (honey lemon- a little spicy for some but I found it to be perfect heat), yan yan lemon chicken (lemon sauce was served on the side which we didn't mind), Deluxe lo mein, special ginger beef, and the deluxe fried rice.
A variety of dishes for us to try under $71 tax included and we received a free order of sweet and sour pork for spending over $60. I like free :)

We had also ordered on New Years and was happy with everything so figured we would order from here again. I'm glad we did. It's been a while since I've visited other Chinese restaurants in St. James (ie: good earth, the great world, marigold so I can't say Yan Yan is the best Chinese food in the area today, but I'd recommend giving it a try. Friendly service and good value for your money.

Best sweet and sour chicken balls in the city! You take a bite into it, and you can see the huge chunk of chicken in it. You mean I'm not eating just batter?! The hot and sour beef is to die for. I can't stop eating it. Not going anywhere else for Chinese food in the west end. Not to mention that their delivery service is super quick!

Worst Chinese food experience ever. We live very close by so decided to give it a shot. When we picked up our order we asked for plum sauce and were told it was in the bag. Upon getting home we saw it was not and returned to pick some up. Annoying but forgivable. That was the start of this mess. We ordered the mushroom chop suey and a dish under their "Bean Cake Tofu (spicy) section. There were three options. Bean cake with meat, bean cake with mixed greens and Schezwan deluxe bean cake. We ordered Schezwan. It didn't list meat as an ingredient and being it was a Tofu dish we thought it was safe to assume it was vegetarian. It was in fact full of meat. I called back to comment about the misleading menu and they offered to exchange it for the spicy bean cake with mixed greens which they assured was just tofu and veg. So we go for the third time to exchange. Turns out the Spicy Bean cake is really just dry ordinary tofu chunks with zero spice whatsoever. Zero. The vegetables thrown in were barely cooked or warm, basically just tossed in oil. The most bland awful dish we have ever had. The mushroom chop suey was not much better. It was completely devoid of sauce and the vegetables also were almost raw. There were about 5 slivers of mushroom in the whole thing which hardly warranted "mushroom" in the dish's title. We barely ate any, tossed it out, went to McDonalds and considered it a $25 lesson learned -- take the trip and your money to Good Earth in St. James instead for Chinese food. Or anywhere else for that matter.

Yan Yan = YUM YUM. What can I say..........whether you dine in or take-out, this place delivers. Fresh, tasty, moderately priced, and generous proportions. Plus.......the service is simply the best.

If you dine in......the atmosphere is friendly and clean. And the staff treat you like gold. If you pick-up, the staff greets you like you're special and welcome. They really go the extra mile to earn your business and make you happy. Either way......your business is respected.

I've very seldom had any complaints with the food. At any restaurant, that can happen. And people do have off-days.....who doesn't? And there are a lot of places in this city that I've walked out of or have never gone back to.

But there are only 2 Chinese restaurants in Winnipeg that are consistently good, and that I trust for quality, cleanliness, and friendly service. The New China Kitchen on St. Annes Road in St. Vital. And Yan Yan. Do yourself a favor.......check them both out.

Primo Chinese Food. Ordered from Yan Yan's for the first time tonight. I would give them a 4.5/5 rating.
1) I was impressed at the fact they do free delivery. (On orders more than 25$ I think)on top of free service, they were extremely fast!
2) For just under $40 we got a LOT of food. We had 5 different dishes.
3) The food was delish! My comment on the spring rolls was that I haven't had a spring roll this good in a long time.
4) My only negative for yan yan's is that the Cantonese Beef Chow Mein was very oliy/greasy
Overall very impressed, and would order food from there again!

Love it!. I have been coming here with my family for years. It is our go to Chinese food place. Food is always really good, very friendly staff and wait time for food is short too. I would recommend to anyone!

Salty and disgusting. We had two combination plates and I must say.. Friendly nice staff there but the food was truly awful. The fried rice was not like real fried rice and tasted burnt. The chow mein noddles were salty and chewy and the veal was the saltiest meat I've ever eaten before and I am a salt lover..... Way to much for me. We didn't finish it and threw it out it wasn't edible. Sorry but won't be back.

Very nice service and fast delivery but very poor Chinese food. I've had a lot of different places all over town and this was by far the worst I've had.

So friendly. Really fast delivery. I have tried most Chinese food places in the area and this is my go-to. Love their shanghai noodle dish (106a).

Ordered delivery, Yan Yan special chow mein. Portion was heavy on the noodles and light on the meats. Vegs were nicely cooked not soggy. Dry breaded ribs were nice, a few minutes too long in the deep fryer, good portion.
Burnt the fried rice
Overall, not bad. Would try it again as its close to work.
