The staff/owners are so very nice. The food was delicious but the pastries were just divine.

The food and snacks are delicious. The customer service could be better. I felt like I was not welcome buying there. Anyway, I went for the food, which is 5 stars (customer service is 2).

I've had food here a few times and loved it! They also sell Guaraná Antarctica (soft drink) both by the can, and by the case. It's great stuff, so if you're ordering a soft drink with your order I'd highly recommend you try it out!

First time today, (although I ordered yesterday as they are closed Sundays). Had the roast chicken and potatoes. Delish! Next time, we will eat in. Although, there are only a few tables - it's more of a take out place. My friend picked up the food, loved the aromas, and that they were very friendly and welcoming. Order the chicken ahead of time - I ordered 3.5 ahead, but its recommended you order 24 hours ahead for the chicken to marinate longer. But I have no complaints the way it was. I ordered a medium spice level, but didn't find it at all spicy - next time I'll try the next level. Yum!

First time here at Viena do Castelo and I enjoyed it. It is a small place that was obviously a home, turned into a small restaurant. Super friendly service, I felt pretty welcomed here. I got the Sopa E Bifana lunch special, which is pretty much a fresh bun with pork (marinated and possibly boiled in traditional sauce?), caramelized onions, banana peppers and hot sauce. It came with a soup which tasted like carrots and possibly potato. It was all comforting home portugués food. Paid less than $7 for this meal which was great, but unfortunately I'm a very hungry person so I didn't leave full. Overall it was decent for the price, and it's different from most things available in Winnipeg. Will probably be back to try more items on the menu. Worth a try.

Great!!! Fresh food. Low-cost. Friendly staff.

Was visiting family this week and my best friend wanted to go for Portuguese food, because he had visited me in Calgary and I had treated him to an awesome traditional Portuguese diner.

Having not lived in Winnipeg for over 15 years I didn't know where to go and old Portuguese restaurants I was familiar with are all closed, so I did some research and discovered there are none left.

I found that there is one that has a few things like Portuguese style grilled chicken on the menu, but the rest of the food is not, therefore it's not authentic.

The other two places were grocery/bakery establishments that serve some hot food in the back. I chose Viena do Castelo based on the proximity to where my friend works and took him to lunch.

I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. They don't have a full sit down dinning experience with an extensive menu. But what they do offer is very tasty, fresh, and affordable. There is a sitting area with a few tables at the front of the establishment. It was sunny and clean and made for a nice lunch-time eat and chat.

The staff were friendly and very helpful. We explained what we were looking for and they put together a nice lunch for the two of us. We had:

Bifanas - crusty Portuguese buns filled with tender port cutlets smothered in a rich sauce, with sauté onions. We had ours topped with banana pepper rings and hot pimento sauce. They were delicious...just like my mom's, but even with the peppers and suave, they weren't as hot as my mom's...thank god :-)

Bacalho as Nata - cod fish and potato in cream sauce. I had never had this before and it was delicious. I would certainly look for this dish when I get back home, because I am hooked. I eat it all up and was completely satisfied with the portion and flavour. It had the right amount if saltines and seasoning, but others may find it too salty. Definitely not a bland dish.

We chased these two wonderful items down with a couple of cans of orange Sumol, which is a soft drink they sell as part of their grocery items. It's nice: not too sweet and not too carbonated. North American soft drinks could learn a thing or two from this simple soft drink :-)

Pastels de Nata - For desert with had a couple of custard tarts from their bakery items. These were very fresh and delicious. I have eaten a lot if pastels de nata in my many years and these were some of the best I have ever had.

Overall a great value meal with great taste and freshness. I highly recommend this for a quick low-cost lunch or a very, very casual early dinner.

Heard about this place from a friend of mine, who said their Portuguese egg tarts or pastel de nata were really good. This was my first time hearing about them being available in the city, so of course I had to go try it. The last time I had Portuguese egg tarts was when I was in Macau, and they were so amazing, so my expectations have already been set quite high.

We got a package of 6. The shell of the egg tart was flaky, and there was a nice caramelization at the top. They were very good, but they weren't as good as the ones I've had in the past. Give them a try if you've never had a Portuguese egg tart before.

Great little neighborhood spot! It's definitely 50% grocery store and 50% bakery/restaurant. I got an assortment of things but the beef and chorizo was delicious and the little baked items I took home were worth a second visit...which I plan on doing today!
My only gripe, and this is more because I'm new, is that they didn't have their other menu offerings listed anywhere. The lady beside me was clearly ordering something very large and nowhere to be found in the menu. The reviews previously have also made mention of roast chicken dinners, etc. which I can find when I go in there. Other than that, great place!
Bravo
Very friendly, owner operated establishment. Great catering services, great eat in and take out too. The baked good are delicious, the lunches are savoury and both, are always fresh! Along with all gastronomical goodness, you can also pick up a few groceries to try creating some of your own Portuguese inspired meals at home. A delightful place and you will always be greeted with a welcoming, heartfelt smile.

Great people and food. The couple that run the deli/store are some of the happiest, friendliest, and most genuine people I have ever seen in the service industry. They seem to really care and are very helpful. You can get the soup of the day (usually potato and leek with an option to top it with chorizo) and a sandwich like the birfana (delicious pork sandwich) for $5, which is a tasty deal. It's best to come earlier on in the day, since there's not much food left closer to closing time. On Saturday there are more specials available and they're different each day. When we visited we had the shrimp "Portuguese perogies", a potato and cod dish, and a clam, potato and pork dish. The custard tarts are our new favorite dessert that's available.

*I recently brought some friends with me to try Viena do Castelo, with most of us ordering a chorizo sandwich and the potato kale soup, and everyone was impressed. They were happy with the generous portions, friendly service, quality of food and the price. All said they would come back. Even when an extra soup was accidentally dished, they offered it for free, since they want customers to leave full.

Wonderful staff and delicious homemade fresh food!

To say that I'm impressed would be an understatement. I randomly found this restaurant with high ratings on urbanspoon.

First time, I went with a friend for the pork sandwich and soup. Tender pork cutlet with caramelized onion and crusty, soft bread. Hearty, filling potato soup sure to keep you warm on a cold fall day.

I brought home the chorizo bun and a link of chorizo. With a fried egg, the chorizo bun made a satisfying and delicious breakfast. The chorizo was the best I've ever had -- spicy, meaty, didn't taste processed. Even better than Macau, known for Portuguese food. Also tried the egg tarts. Although I do not have a sweet tooth, the tarts were caramelized on the top with fluffy puffed pastry. Just melts in your mouth!

The second day (had to visit again within the week), I only intended to show my husband the restaurant. When we arrived, this flew out the window! The grilled sardines, crab cakes and perogy called out to us. Made with love, no doubt, and a perfect snack.

Apparently, the menu changes all the time. I heard something about chorizo poutine!!

This is quickly becoming a favourite place for us and the prices are unbelievable. $3 a sandwich?!? You can't even get fast food for that price.

You can tell that the owners care. Everything is homemade. They REALLY care about making the best quality food and offering exceptional service and prices to customers. All of this shows and it makes a difference.

Creativity and inspiration in every bite.

Try this place for breakfast!. The friendly dude will make you whatever you want, for a great price. I had the omelet with chorizo, cheese, parsley and their house made hot sauce. Deelish!!

Their baked goods look fantastic as well!

Another West End Winner :)

OMG this store is amazing its CLEAN and the people are fantastic and friendly. The food is aMazing; pasties da nata *drool*,chocolate mocha cupcakes ( to die for and so moist). I went there and tried their deep fried Perogies stuffed with different kinda meat( my favorite is tuna but there all good) and the rump roast it was delicious along with everything else. I tired their piri piri sandwich with soup OMG yummie. This has to be the most incredible place to eat. You will not reget going to that store and trying there unbelievable food. One of my favorites places by far. Keep up the amazing work

Very Friendly Staff. This is a lovely little store with a warm and welcoming staff. No gruffness or frowns here. I only tried a couple house-made items, but they were spectacular. One, a very fragrant and properly smokey chorizo sausage. We sliced the sausage into coins and fried it, then tucked the coins into a fresh bun. Yummy. The pasteis de nata (custard tarts) beat those sold at Lisbon Bakery hands down. You must try them. We also enjoyed the really nice canned tuna in olive oil, a grocery item we picked up. All in all, a clean, friendly store with lots of interesting foodstuffs to check out. I'll be back to try the bifana and the other types of Portuguese baked goods on offer here that aren't going to sample themselves!

Wow went in there yesterday for the first time had a bifana, pork in a bun. had a home made soup, pastry, & drink fo under $10 will be back a again

Even the name of this little food store, bakery and eatery at 105-819 Sargent Ave in the Sargent Park area of the West End: “Viena Do Castelo ” sounds foreign, romantic and delicious to me. I would guess that the name was selected in tribute to a community in northern Portugal and my pre-visit research indicated that they are the purveyors of Portuguese specialty foods. My husband and I have long dreamed of visiting the Mediterranean country, especially the Azores. When I arrived to pick up our pre-ordered chicken, a gorgeous vista of the Azores adorned the wall behind the checkout counter. That part of the country is the home to one half of the married Esteves team that own and operate the store and restaurant. The whole roasted chicken and potatoes that I ordered for takeout tasted just as if I had pulled it out of my own oven (without having to scrub a baked-on roasting pan-yippee). Although the chicken was on the small side (for the price) the meat was firm and moist. W
