Review East Ocean Restaurant - Winnipeg

Local family owned restaurant. Great simple Chinese restaurant. Kept clean, staff are friendly and efficient. Food is fresh and cooked well. Very basic washrooms available for customers. Accepts Cash, debt and credit cards.

The owner is the nicest person in the world! The portions are great sizes and the food comes out hot and quick! We’ve eaten in and had pick up for 20+ people! No concerns at all and the prices are very affordable! I can not recommend this place enough!

It’s been close to a decade since I’ve eaten at this restaurant. In my younger days this place was bustling with the after bar crowd and would go on right till 3-4 in the morning. A lot of memories. Anyhow fast forward 10 years later. Me and a group of old high school friends decided to grab a late night meal and this was the place. We were all sceptical of the quality. One, we used to come eat here majority of the time half cut. This time we were all hungry and sober. Low and behold end result every dish ordered was a home run. Name of the restaurant remains the same but ownership looked different. Regardless food was amazing.

The BEST chinese food in the city! Never disappoints! Our faves are the deep fried squid, five spice shrimp, pan fried sole and the veal with sweet and sour sauce on the side!

I am not a person who gives reviews but I have been visiting this place and have build a craving to atleast have a Sunday dinner here with friends . It actually worth the food and owners are wonderful, always looking towards the customers concern that’s what a service is . Wish you all the best and I be coming here till I am here in Manitoba .

great! reasonable price with huge portion! service is great too. They open til late which is amazing when I'm craving for late night food. Tasty food! I always eat in and take out what's left because eating in has more portion. :)

Food wasn't as great as I thought it would be with the reviews. Owner was very nice! I was harassed by people asking for money right in front of the entrance which was not pleasant. I ordered the Singapore noodles and spicy salt shrimp. Noodles were more spicy than curry and the shrimp were miniature. Squid was cooked very well but bland on seasoning. I always order the same thing and try different places, so I will continue on my search for perfection

Food would be a 5.0 to be quite honest- depending on what you get. As a regular, I'd get the bbq duck, steamed broccoli, sweet and sour chicken balls (when they're hot- they're to die for) and rice enough for 2. Have yet to try their chilli garlic oil. The 1.0 less in rating is due to their lack of delivery service on weekdays - which is a downside for one without a car and too tired to cook after a busy day at work. Cravings unfulfilled.
Friday night my friends take me out to east ocean. A long discussed restaurant they've been wanting me to try. I'm not big on Chinese food as most Chinese food experiences weren't that great but I digress.

Theres four of us ready and hungry. We ordered the orange chicken, almond chicken, ginger beef, sweet and sour pork, mixed veggies and a shredded duck with pickled veggies and noodle dish. Everything came out pretty quick as the restaurant was bare. Here's what I had tried in the order that came out first. The mixed veggies tasted like any mixed veggies at every Chinese restaurant bland. But I give a thumbs up for texture. Next the orange chicken is placed on our table piping hot. I try a bite and it tasted pretty good the breaded chicken was crispy and I could taste the orange in the sauce. A+ for orange chicken. The next to come was the shredded duck and noodle while lackluster in appearance it was also a little less flavorful as I'd expected. The sauce for this dish sank to the bottom and it seemed like the noodles hadn't soaked up any of the sauce leaving no taste in my mouth. I had to add some soy sauce and chilli oil and some white pepper. So I didn't much like that dish but I liked to texture for the noodles. Next up in line were the ginger beef and the sweet and sour pork. Both crisp in texture and enough sauce to coat every morsel. So a pleasant experience. And lastly the almond chicken. While appealing to the eyes the taste did not match. As thick as the sauce was, much like the others, all I could taste was sesame oil. There's was no other taste other than that and they @had used cashews instead of almonds. But again the breading was crispy and the meat inside was tender.
Of course we had it with rice.

So overall... to me it's like other Chinese restaurants. Nothing really stood out. Everything blended together. I would order for takeout since it's close. It wouldn't be my top choice for recommendations but I'd say why not give it a try.

Went here on a lunch buffet for $7+ and there were quite a few customers in the restaurant. I thought it was worth it and will definitely come back for their menu food items. Not fancy with interior deco. It was actually difficult to find street parking. So, you would have to park on parking lots and spend a couple dollars more for parking fees.

GREAT OIL. DON'T BE FOOLED BY RED BOTTLE ON TABLE, IT'S ACTUALLY VINEGAR. 5-SPICE SQUID IS LIT. TASTES GREAT WITH CHILLI OIL. FUN TO GO WITH FRIENDS SO YOU CAN VALIDATE YOURSELF ON THE NET.

Absolutely love this place. Whenever i have Chinese somewhere else, I always compare to here. Its inexpensive and the owners are super nice. Some of the best ginger beef and 5spice calimari I've ever had!

This restaurant located beside Ken's restaurant, and a lot of people thought they are same as Ken's restaurant. However, I would tell you it is a huge different. Food and veggie are fresher, and less msg. The place is clean, but small. I like their spicy peanut noodle soup. It is awesome, and they are open late too, so therefore, there is the other opinion for people after bar.

The place to go for Chinese food after midnight. The place is simple but clean. Tasty food, generous servings and affordable price. The best tasting chili garlic oil.

I actually really love this place. The area is a little sketchy, but nothing ever happens, and the food is way more than worth it. Good prices huge portions. I'm obsessed with their orange chicken, so far I've mainly has stuff off their schezuan dishes, but I've also had the sweet and sour pork in pineapple sauce, and the beef and gailan(Chinese broccoli?) and chow mein. They were all amazing. I'm pretty picky, but I've enjoyed each dish so far. There's two types of ginger beef here, the fried ginger beef is the best I've ever had ever anywhere, ever. They service is friendly, the wait time is crazy short. You order, talk a bit and begin the feast. Definitely going again, and again.

Overall East Ocean have to be commended for offering authentic Chinese cuisine, something that the majority of Chinese style restaurants here lack. While each dish had some faults and difficulties, the flavours were mostly there and each cooked well enough to be reminiscent of proper authentic Chinese food, and for that, East Ocean should at least deserve a visit.

Crispy Chicken in Green Onion and Ginger Sauce. This sauce is on point. Make sure to soak every bit of chicken in that sauce!

-----27 Apr, 2015-----

Five Spice Squid. Hands down the best 5spice squid in the city. Perfect every single time.

Great food, cheap price. I originally found this place to order food for an office lunch for my department, we ordered $80 of food for 7 of us, and had enough to feed 20 people. It was all very good too! I also have gone for the lunch buffet, it is small but perfect for lunch, hot and fresh. $7.75 for the eat in lunch buffet and $7.25 for a take out buffet... yes take out buffet!

Excellent Chinese Food. 1st time customer ordered take away.Chicken both lemon and honey garlic were great the breaded shrimp was cooked to perfection deluxe fried rice tasty and the Cantonese chow mein noodles came separate from the meat and veggies which was very good.all the fried dishes ordered had very little oil/grease on them.......This is my new choice for Chinese East Ocean Restaurant Job well done.

I went here for the lunch buffet based on the reviews and overall rating of 90+% on Urbanspoon.

Severely disappointed with the selection as well as the quality of what was available. The consommé soup was flavourless for starters, and while I was ladling it into the bowl there was a person ahead of me instructing their lunch mate not to take the soup...now I know why.

I would definitely not recommend this as the old adage pops to mind: you get what you pay for: $7.95 for the buffet.

For all of the meat dishes the batter and/or coating was excessive and especially so for the chicken balls (will concede this on the latter: all white meat - the little that was there).

I shall not be returning.

NOT CLOSED. Someone's idea of a prank? Childish game. This is a hard working family's restaurant.

GOOD FOOD, GREAT SERVICE.
Favourites are ; Spicy salt squid and ginger beef.

Best seafood combo I've ever had. Very well priced.

Fine Choice for Chinese Food. I read the other reviews and decided to give this place a try. I'll be back.

The place is a stereotypical hole in the wall style restaurant. It is quite small and sparsely decorated. There were some historical photos of Chinese cities on the wall. It should be noted that the place looked clean.

There is a very small buffet that is offered. I was there late and there wasn't much left. My experience is that these types of places don't refill the buffet when it is within half hour of closing, so I figured I would try something off the menu. I got the fried ginger beef. It was excellent. For $10 I received a large portion of ginger beef. My only real complaint is that I would have liked it to be crunchier. It was firm and not soggy, but I like a crisper texture. The flavour was very good. One could see the pieces of ginger in the sauce which made the spiciness of the dish much hotter. My server kept my water glass full at all times.

I will be back.

Amazing food and great hospitality!! I've never been disappointed with a meal here!

And to set rumours straight...THEY ARE NOT CLOSING!! I was told by the owner himself. Thank goodness because I would have lost the only place I eat Chinese food in in the city!

Late late night treat. This tiny place is open until 4 am on the weekends. We went there out of desperation looking for a place to eat. Turns out the food is very good, large portions, quick and friendly service. We will definitely be going back for more.

Portions are incredible. Everything is delicious. Especially the ginger beef. One of my favourite places in the city. A true hidden gem! And open til 3am. Best place in town after a night out.

This was a great restaurant with a good choice of yummy and healthy food. Our first time in Winnipeg and our family had a splendid time at this little hide-away. The restaurant was clean, simple with great service. Highly recommend.

They sell bean curd dishes! Woo-hoo!. I was a happy, happy diner the day I noticed this restaurant and went in. It apparently has been there for many years, and every time I mention it I either get raving reviews or I am asked if I have ever tried the buffet. I personally have not yet tried the buffet, but I intend to if I am ever near East Ocean Restaurant and am hungry within the times the buffet is open. It is not an all day buffet, so be sure to check before hand if it is currently open if you will not want to order dishes off the menu instead. It is a dollar cheaper if you are getting it to go. ($7.95 in, and $6.95 out) From what I hear, it is all western-style Chinese foods, chicken wings and ribs. This will disappoint some, but I think that if you are planning to take it back to the office or eat in a hurry the foods offered should accommodate that need.

I love ordering the bean curd dishes as I abstain from eating meat from time to time. The mixed vegetables with bean curd is my favorite, the lemon chicken is to die for! -they give you the dish with the sauce on the side so you can add the amount you want. The lemon sauce has a sweet/lemon taste to it instead of a tart or citrus flavor. I've also had a few of the seafood dishes, the fried rice with mushrooms, and a (thin) crisp noodle. All of them were dishes I would order again. The drinks are priced well at $3.50 to $4.00 per drink. They serve Tsing Tao beer (I hope I am spelling that correctly). I enjoy this particular beer.

All in all, I recommend trying this restaurant. I have read a few other reviews on this restaurant, and I hope no one will be mislead into thinking that all of the dishes are Canadianized, they aren't. The menu is bilingual and I know this will be greatly appreciated by some. The dining area is clean. The staff is prompt and friendly. The décor is simple and outdated, but not unpleasant. tables can accommodate 4- or 8 people without moving tables or chairs.
Enjoy!

Just went there for dinner. There's no flavor what so ever!!! Would not go there again

Delicious!. I went there with a couple friends and it wass phenominal. It was Sunday late evening and no one was in the restaurant but the service was prompt and courteous from our waitress and the kitchen as well a very polite. The food came out quick, hot and full of flavour. We got the delux rice which was very tasty, deep fried won tons my favorite! The Calamari, I couldn't help but going for seconds, shrimp in black bean sauce with peppers, so good! And honey garlic chicken balls a great size full of savoury sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds, to die for! The price was for 3 people around $45. The atmosphere is very laid back. I definatlley recommend coming to this restaurant.

Buffet Review. This is a review of the buffet only. We went there on a Friday to try it out. The buffet is really small. It's pretty much all western "chinese" food. Mostly deep fried battered stuff including wings, ribs and what appears to be chicken balls. There were stir fried vegetables, fried rice and pan fried noodles, won ton soup and deep fried spring rolls. The fried rice is just pan fried rice with soya sauce (no peas, green onions etc). Same thing with the noodles. This is your basic quantity over quality buffet. The only good thing was that it was cheap.

Attempted supper July 26 2012. Unprepossessing looking, but was hungry. Ordered meal and as other tables food came, thought it looked good. Unfortunately, police came in and strongly suggested leaving due to sewer gas fire in adjacent block. Didn't get to try food that occasion, but wouldn't hesitate to try them again.

Lunch buffet is small but good Gweilo grub. Gweilo is Cantonese for non-Chinese people and whenever I see a buffet with chicken balls, fried rice, mixed vegetables, etc - I call it Gweilo food because that is what Chinese restaurants put out to please the majority of the public. This is exactly what the lunch buffet is, and it does it well! The best part of the lunch buffet is the chicken wings.

Darn good price and very fast food. Plus it is not usually crowded.

The only problem I have is that everything is so darn good that I cannot go there more than once every two weeks or I am going to need to buy bigger clothes. ;-)

This place is great! The food has lots of flavor and always arrives hot and fast. This is my new favorite Chinese food joint! The Shanghai Noodles are amazing as are the sizzling hot plates.

Coming Back. This place is so tiny, reminds me of a bachelor pad. But the food is great, serving is decent.... Highly recommended than the next door neighbour
ken's Restaurant.

Good food. Hot pot is my favorite!

It reminds me.... ...Of my favourite restaurant in the town I stayed in when I spent 8 months in central China. The decor as I recall was almost spartan, but that's part of the appeal to me.

When I was in Hubei, I tried to avoid western restaurants (KFC, MCDonalds or even places that aspired to prepare foods in western manners, steaks, western style roasts etc). as much as possible to enjoy the culture, and the local traditions.

This place always reminds me of the best of those experiences.

I loved the Service..... ...but honestly the food was average at best. Maybe it's what we had Mu-Shu Pork, Pan-Fried Shrimp and Chicken & Chinese Mushroom Chow Mein.
The Mu-Shu Pork was all bean sprouts, most mu-shu I have had in the past has had mushrooms, bamboo shoots, bok choy or something else in it besides bean sprouts and pork. It tasted OK but the pork was tough Our 2nd dish was the chow mein. The chicken was the kind where you wonder how they got it so tenderized with the texture being almost unnatural. It also had large quarter sections of shitake mushrooms and some gai-lan. It was a tad bland though. Our final dish was the pan fried shrimp which thankfully were not over cooked but served with way too many semi fried onions and a few cashews. Again it was OK but just not great.
Service was prompt and friendly, pot of Jasmin tea was nice, water glasses were refilled without asking....just not sure the food is worth going back for.

Affordable and good. Visited on a Saturday night, they were not very busy.

Like they say, the best Chinese restaurants are often the ones without the flashy decor. This is a very small restaurant, simple and basic inside, no atmosphere to speak of. Washroom could use a good cleaning(GROSS). House red was actually ok. Not great selection of beer. Food was overall decent. One dish was just fair. Took home a doggy bag. Lowest bill so far on our stay in Winnipeg.
3 dishes, one Tsing Tao beer and glass of red came to $40. Service was fast and good.

Daughter's Favourite!. My daughter's favourite restaurant of all time in the city! Everything she eats here is always fresh tasting. The orange spicy chicken is awesome - a sweet chili glaze with a wonderful green veg addition to this saucy dish. I could fight her for her leftovers! I actually crave ths dish sometimes! Have tried a noodle dish as well with shrimp. Another favourite of hers is the beef chow fan, but I'm not a beef fan...but she and a friend love it! Her only wish....that they would deliver!

(July 23/10) Finally made it here! Small, clean surroundings and prompt, friendly service. Food was hot and delicious. Had the orange spicy chicken (which is much crispier than take-out), the cantonese chow mein and the hubby and daughter shared the curry beef stew. All was tasty. I tried the spring roll which was a disappointment. Next time I will forgo it or try another appetizer. Portions are extremely generous - (lots of leftovers here) and the green tea was plentiful and very hot and stayed hot! Parking is on the street and we met another family who drove all the way from the Maples to dine here! They have a folllowing of hungry patrons!
