Review Kiwa - Winnipeg

Michelle
Lots of parking - easy to find restaurant on Pembina Hwy. Dine in and take out available. Nice ambiance. Tables were well spaced out. I am not an expert on Korean cuisine, but we did enjoy our meal here. Had never tried Kimchi before. Interesting side dish. Really liked the sprout side mini salad. We had the L.A. Galbi L.A (Beef Short rib with vegetables BBQed); Bulgogi Chicken (Chicken with vegetables BBQed) and Yum-Yum Mandu (Deep fried Pork dumpling, Korean Sweet & Spicy Sauce). It came with three mini sides - the sprout salad, Kimchi, and seaweed salad. The food was well prepared. Definitely different flavours that were new to me. Interesting place to try if you like Korean food.

Superb service from the moment we walked into this establishment. Food was a 4.5 out of 5, but service was outstanding 5/5. The cold noodles were just a bit too saucy and salty for our liking but the pork donkatsu/kimchi fried rice as well as gamjatang were fantastic! By far the cleanest washrooms in an Asian food establishment I have ever seen. Kudos Kiwa, we will be back to try more things on your extensive menu!

We had a great time here today! Staffs were so friendly and the restaurant looks clean. Hubby and I ordered Gamjatang and Jokbal, both tasted so yummy. However Gamjatang came out not bubbling hot as I expected. Ordered a tonkatsu kids meal for my little one and he liked it. They were very thoughtful about adding kids meal to the menu makes it a kid-friendly restaurant. They makes it not salty at all which I really appreciate since I dont want my baby to eat heavy seasoning food as many other restaurants kids menu. Will be back! :)

Every dish was delicious. Servers were friendly and helpful. Pricier than others but worth it

This place is an amazing treat. It feels just like going to a restaurant in Korea. The staff are super friendly, the food is simply amazing and a great value for the quality you get. It feels like going to a family dinner, comfortable, welcoming and filling.

First time here; I used to frequent a small latenite restaurant when touring Edmonton near Whyte Ave. called 'Steel Wheels' that has an amazing kimchi soup... Decided to check out this place near where I am staying in hopes of finding a similar dish and was not disappointed! The whole place is simple, cute, and clean (including the washrooms!) ... The servers were all masked and they clearly take their cleanliness seriously--covered spoons even! I got the (pork) kimchi jjigae, and an order of their yum yum mandu (crispy pork dumplings in Korean sweet and spicy sauce).. and a can of Canada Dry ginger ale. The kimchi jjigae was nearly identical to the kimchi soup I was used to; a rich and spicy broth with kimchi, green onion, tofu, glass noodles (about the size of spaghetti noodles, but clear and with an average semi-firm texture - never had them in the other kimchi soup, but they were good) and pork --the pork was a little thinner and just simply less in terms of quantity than the other soup I've had elsewhere, but still tender and delicious! The soup came bubbling hot in a black stone bowl and accompanied by a small bowl of rice and 3 sides--kim chi (spicy fermented cabbage-their's is not overly salty as many are and not too spicy), seaweed salad (seaweed in a sweet/spicy sauce), and cooked, seasoned potatoes. Every dish was delicious and service was fast, friendly, and attentive. I went around 7:30pm on a monday night, and had my order on my table by 7:42 and out by 8:14. For the dumplings (10 I blelieve) and the large bowl of soup, plus rice and sides, it came to around $35+tip. Not cheap, but not crazy for the quality and I had some leftover dumplings, rice etc. The servers were VERY polite, helpful when asking questions about dishes / pronunciations, and checked on myself and the other guests' experience frequently (but not too much either!). It was evident there were returning customers the servers recognized that joined after me.. The team is also incredibly efficient; everything is brought out swiftly on a rolling cart, so not only are they not busting their backs with trays, it doesn't take multiple trips or servers to bring full orders, or things like boiling hot soups and tabletop korean bbqs straight to your table. And, when 3 guests completed their meal and left, both servers and another staff member came out with a cart, not a word was said, and they bussed, cleaned, wiped, sanitized, straightened out the table, and wheeled the cart off in silence in LITERALLY 11 SECONDS. As someone who has worked in the hospitality and service industry for years, I was mind blown by the efficiency... Overall, delicious food, fabulous service and a wonderful experience. Highly recommend!! I'm excited to go with a friend or two and try some of the larger meals designed to be shared! Will update if I do! Happy eats!!

They started out well when I first visited the restaurant in 2013 but over time, the quality of food and services and the quantity of food has changed over time. Not my favourite place anymore.

Always coming back for more! Always amazing. Never have anything bad here. The service is great also. My favorite and go to is the bibimbap and the kimchi pancake.

The food was great! Except that the air conditioning isn’t really that good. Since it’s been hot lately, they don’t adjust the temperature based on weather and number of people inside.

oday on 2nd Jan, I had supper with my family. We ordered $100 amount of food including Noodle, Chicken, and some kinds of roll, and Tang of pork with potato. However, very disappointed of Tang which just put in pork bone feel like some smell, moreover no vegetable inside of Tang. It seems some spicy soup and pork bone only. The price was over $17 each but it seemed $5 dollar amount. We will not visit again

Just went here to catch up with my best friend! We picked it at random and it was delightful and delicious! As context, none of us are Korean and I can't speak to the authenticity, but the chicken wings were amazing and the bibimbap too! Ban chan were very flavourful. We ordered mochi and they didn't have any kinds except vanilla - so the kitchen customized each plate with different syrup. It was a special and thoughtful touch!
Nice service, fresh and tasty food, would eat again!

The bbq is really good! Comes with delicious sauce to go with the meats. It’s a little bit more on the pricey side. Their kimbap is really good especially the sauce that comes with it as well!

It is not authentic Korean food. The cold noodle was completely different from what we had in Korea. Seems like they just used the instant noodle sold at Korean market. When we ask for the broth since the noodle was super dried, chewy and sticky, they said they don't have enough, they only prepare certain amount for each bowl (but no broth in our bowl)

I went there for the first time yesterday and loved it! The service was really good, the food delicious and I thought it was super cheap for the quality/quantity that we got. Definitely going back!

Had their Beef Bulgogi and it was okay. I know Bulgogi is usually sweet but their version is a little bit on the sweeter side. Serving was kinda small and for it's price, you would expect a little bit more. Side dishes were small as well. But all in all, this restaurant's atmosphere is great and clean-looking.

This past weekend family Thanksgiving was on Sunday, so on the holiday itself I was pretty much left to my own devices. I wandered about during the day, and towards the end of the day found myself out in Fort Richmond. When suppertime arrived I decided to see what restaurants were open, and settled on Kiwa. Kiwa is a Korean restaurant and seemed to be a good fit after having just tried Little Korea.

Oh man, this is hands down my favourite place to get Korean food! Everything is so good. They're fast and friendly and I like that they play K-Pop and you can watch it on their tv as well. The place is designed and decorated nicely. It got packed really quickly after I arrived. I definitely want to go back to try some new things. I highly reccomend this place if you are looking for Korean food.

I was looking for a nice Korean restaurant in the Fort Garry area and stumbled upon Kiwa. Upon walking in, we immediately saw a busy restaurant, but they were able to seat us in the less favourable seats (no problem there).

Ordering was a breeze, the waiter always checked up on us and was reading whether we were done or no. Food came quickly despite the rush. I enjoyed the food, but expected some of it to taste different.

Recommend if you are looking for a different restaurant to try and are in the area. I would definitely go again!

My brother is always craving Korean food so we decided to give Kiwa a shot. We went for lunch both times. We went the first time around 2:30pm and we saw a sign on the door that says we will be closed 3pm - 5pm beginning July. So we went in and the lady said "we're actually closing at 3 so..." Well I would understand if her sign had said beginning in June instead of July and I informed her about the sign, but her response was mumble and I could not understand. So we decided to try again yesterday. This time we went around 2pm. We went in and they said that they would be closing at 2:30pm because they ran out of food and told us to come back for dinner at 5pm. I really don't understand how a restaurant could run out of food if there aren't lines out the door of this place. I haven't even been able to taste their food yet but I'm left with an overall bad impression. Business should not be done like this folks.

Great spot to hit when craving Korean! For me, the best thing about this place is the variety. There are other good Korean restaurants in the city, but this one by far has a great selection of dishes. They have your always popular bulgogi, Soondubu, kimchee/ seafood pancakes and of course bibimbap. But they also have some pretty tasty dishes that may not be so mainstream. For example Korean cold style noodles, including Mool Naegmyun. DDukbokki (rice cakes in spicy sauce). For sure, one of my favourite places to eat!

Best Korean Cuisine in Winnipeg. Absolutely love this place. It has been recommended by a friend, and I've also recommended it to several other friends - unsurprisingly all have loved it. Welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff (notably the lady manager), clean, and of course - delicious food! Well prepared and is served fairly quick. I would recommended the "La Galbi" (short back ribs) and Kim chi and Bulgogi soup. Can never go wrong with that!

Really great!. We just had a late night supper there! I was a little worried that we were going a little to late, but they welcomed us in! Not really knowing what to order we took a few chances and boy were we thrilled! Delicious Bibimbap, sweet BBQ pork, amazing muscle and tofu soup -- and lets not forget the tasty Kimchi Pancake. The staff was extremely friendly. We will definitely be back!

Lovely!. Went on the recommendation of a friend and was pleased! I had the bossam, my companion had the bulgogi bibimbap. For the bossam wrap, I could've used a couple more lettuce leaves (or larger ones) to effectively wrap the pork and toppings. The bibimbap received a good review, though next time my companion will be sure to ask for it without the nori flake garnish since he's a weirdo who doesn't like seaweed. The side dishes were lovely, though I confess the kimchi lacked the kind of kick I like.

Service was friendly and attentive, the food arrived quickly, and the decor/ambiance is fresh and warm. We'll be back!

The food and service is ok but the seafood pancake doesnt have other seafood but just octopus and green onions. The Gamjatang is a lottle bit salty.

Edit:
Tried their yukgaejang and it's pretty watery and flavourless. :( I'll stick to dishes I know and love.

---

Variety for a change. Before KIWA was what it is now it used to house Rakumi and while I did enjoy the food at Rakumi it was typical Korean food. Not much variety, only a small set. I find it is the same for most Korean restaurants (except Bimi) in this city. It's the same: bibimbap, ddukbokki (if you're lucky), gamjatang, pajeon - I mean there's nothing wrong with that but often times the menus are quite small and there's not a lot to choose from.

I like KIWA because there is variety and it distinguishes itself from the other Korean restaurants here in terms of it's offerings. They have a lot of dishes which include noodles (soup or stir fried), ddukbokki (with one that isn't just stir fried in red pepper sauce with fish cake and egg - theirs has a cream one with bacon which we didn't try), different types of kimbap, different stirfry dishes, a whole page of different bibimbaps, and then some soups and stews that have the typical favourites like soon dubu chigae, kimchi chigae, and gamjatang - but they also have doenjang chigae (I don't see this much, only for like 2 restaurants lol), and others I forgot.

When we went they were sold out of the Yukgaejang so I opted for the Bossam set instead and I enjoyed it - it's steamed pork shoulder (according to the server - by the way, service was super informative and friendly) and it comes with rice, some side dishes, and lettuce in which you make lettuce wraps. My partner ordered the bibimbap and he liked that he could choose different toppings because he is allergic to eggs, which most bibimbaps come with. We split a coon(?) kimbap - it's the ones that are shaped like little cylinders. It was refreshing and tasty.

One thing I have to mention was their portions are massive, different from other Korean restaurants I've been to. The bibimbap's dolsot (stone pot) was massive looked like it could feed two people easily. We had to take leftovers.

Would go again!

Just finished lunch here and have to say that it is great! I had "galbi jjim","la galbi","bulgogi dolsot bibimbob" and "kimari" very kind all staff and also i want to say onemorething."Best affordable and delicious korean restaurant in the city!!"

This was the worst food I ever had in a restaurant. I had seafood ddukbokee (rice cake, fish cake and seafood in spicy sauce), bulgogi soup in a stonepot, soon tofu soup and spicy pork bibimbab. None of those dishes was authentic or really, edible. Rice cake dish seemed undercooked so I sent it back. When they "re-cooked" it was still dry and rubbery and gross. Bulgogi soup was just sugar and soy sauce in water with overcooked beef. Soon tofu soup was slightly better but quite bland. Their side dishes were a joke because for three people we got three slices of kimchi, sprinkle of dry fish, and two pieces of potato and fish cake. If you want to go eat here, do yourself a favor and just go to any other Korean restaurant because I have gone all of them and this place is by far the worst. Or just have plain rice with soy sauce. I will not eat at this place again even if I get paid to do so.

Went here on feb 14th, yup like trying new restaurants. Didn't realize this place has been open less then a month. Well they got their act together even with such a short time of being open. There were two servers working; which seemed like maybe not enough as the place packed up while the evening went on. The staff were very kind, willing to answer questions and offered free green tea. The menu is several pages but easy to decipher if your not Korean (which we are not) as they have nice photos at the bottom of each page. I thought the good was really tasty; first Korean experience for me and the hubby. We got #10, #11, #15 and #22. I like variety. The kimchi pancake and spicy chicken were big hits with both of us. I liked all the dishes but hubby wasn't a big fan of the soups, he thought they tasted fishy but I didn't think so. I hope this place keeps up brisk business so it stays open. Rice, kimchi, sautéed zucchini and some potatoe/fish little dishes came along as well.

Perhaps the best marker of the a Korean restaurant, I could not help but notice the litany of ethnically Korean customers at the end of the night. Overall, Kiwa serves excellent Korean at great prices. There are numerous large two person dishes I am already salivating to go try someday. Highly recommended.
