Review Dragon Palace - Winnipeg

Gord Moodie
Ordered pickup and it was ready exactly when they said it would be. Huge portions, filling and delicious. 4 selections did 2 meals for 2 people. One of the city's best.

Been going there for 20 plus years although less often lately, covd right. Seems like they, like a lot of restaurants and grocery stores are taking advantage of this pandemic with higher prices for less product. This week we ordered the deluxe wanton soup which we've had many times before and were disappointed with the price, 30 plus for 2 soups, this is soup! And it had 3 pieces of each kind of meat as if it was measured out. I don't think the take out restaurants suffered so much that they have to be charging 30 plus dollars for 2 bowls of soup for pete's sake.

To be honest my expectations were modest, but this restaurant turned out to be quite good. Ingredients were fresh, dishes tasty and prices reasonable.

This place used to be very good, but has deteriorated. The mooshi beef was flat-out disgusting, but the other dishes I ordered were passable, but not inspiring. Too bad.

Have ordered from here more than a few times and have alwqys enjoyed the meal. Generally stick w the same order. Ginger beef, kung pao chicken, chow mean (this time was pork), beef and broccoli and lemon chicken. It is always delicious (lemon chicken is my favorite) the service is friendly and they give u a time when ur picking up which was spot on. Truly a gem.

VEGETARIANS BEWARE. Family and I called Dragon Palace for pick up order. Asked if any of their soups are vegetarian and was told they can make their hot and spicy (sweet and sour) soup veg. When we opened the soup we found shrimp and pork inside. The rest of the food (noodles, fried rice, sweet and sour shrimp) was decent, but you can find much better options else where. The quality of the restaurant has gone down quite a bit over the years.. not sure if it is due to new owners, management or just plain lack of care. Very disappointed and will not be returning. If you have any sort of dietary restrictions please be careful when ordering from here.

From Texas visiting family in Winnipeg and was craving some Chinese takeout. Chose Dragon Palace based on decent reviews and proximity, very disappointed. Two stars because the staff was nice and food came out quickly. Quality and seasoning of the food was on par with microwaveable Chinese dinners. The food quality can be ignored if the prices weren’t an average of $10+ a plate. The portions were decent for the price but again not quality food. I definitely felt like we overpaid walking out of there. Pictured: Egg Drop Mushroom soup & Chicken fried rice.

One of the best crispy ginger beef dishes I've had. Been twice now and food and service was good. Friendly staff, low key environment.

Service was slow for a Sunday but I think it was because they were understaffed. Typical Chinese restaurant decor and setting but clean. Waitress was nice and helpful. We ordered the curry chicken and and garlic pork with fire rice. Both were delicious! Food was great and portions were perfect. Would go again 😁

Service is friendly, food is great and prices are reasonable.

Especially for a small, suburban outlet the food quality is exceptional and there are items on (and off) the menu which usually require trips to "Chinatown" type specialty restaurants.

The Deluxe Wonton soup is a huge bowl including pork, chicken, shrimp and of course Wontons which can easily serve as a meal for one or portion for 2 to 4.Pan fried or steamed dumplings are as good as anywhere and the Mooshi variants are exceptional.

They do a good job with lemon chicken (which is a great value in the meal specials and for takeout). Szechuan Ginger beef is a good choice. Pork in Hickory sauce is a special twist. The crystal chicken with garlic is as good as anywhere and better than most as is the Dragon Palace special Seafood.

Szechuan Shanhai Fried Noodles is the best in the noodles/chow mein/chow fan category.

Off menu they sometimes offer mango chicken and apparently offer (or used to) Peking duck with 2 days notice (the recipe requires this). At $50 for a full, multi course meal for several this also was an exceptional value. I have not tried it myself but heard good word of mouth from someone who had.

Hard to get much better but, like good Olympic judges I reserve the 5 star rating for places which simply can't get better.

We ordered deluxe wonton soup, spring rolls and ginger beef. The spring rolls had a mushy tasteless filling and the ginger beef was inedible. The beef was so full of sinew you could not even chew it. The sauce was good but I don't know what cut of beef they use, never had anything that tough. The soup was passable but nothing like the delicious one they used to make a year ago. This was our second order in the last month and the fist was just as bad. Thought we would give it one more try as it used to be our go to place for Chinese food but we will not be back.

Lynn

We ordered Shrimp with mixed vegetables and cashews as well as Beef Satay with noodles and white rice. Everything was awful!! The white rice was clumped in a ball; the vegetables in the shrimp dish consisted of two little pieces of cauliflower, broccoli stems - no florets but mostly raw unpeeled carrot chunks. Although we asked for soft noodles in our beef satay they were crunchy and the dish only had about 8 small pieces of beef. We had to ask for more water three times. We definitely will not be returning.

FAST AND DELICIOUS. I gauge Chinese establishments on the Cantonese chow mein as well as Hot and Sour soup. Both were rich & flavourful here.
Fast delivery service, as well!
Great stuff.

Don't eat here - Horrible Customer Service. On our recent visit the customer service was inexcusably inattentive. I could understand if they were busy but they still had time to have long conversations with other customers that appeared to be regulars. After paying or bill and leaving a generous tip despite these short comings they then accused us of not paying. When confronted with the debit receipt, rather than apologize or attempt to make amends in any way they ran away to hide. Considering they offer average food that you can easily find elsewhere I cannot recommend more strongly that you skip this place and take your money to a different place where you have a chance of being treated respectfully,

Fantastic. This Chinese restaurant is by far one of the best in the city. If you're looking for delicious greasy Chinese food, Dragon Palace won't disappoint you. The staff is incredibly friendly and are always there to serve you with a smile, and the food is delicious. Even a dish like fried chicken balls is cooked well, with a wonderful batter-to-chicken ratio! Whenever I crave Chinese food take-out this is the place I go to, regardless of the fact it takes me nearly a half hour to get there.

Don't try it. Veal is a chewy fatty mess. Everything else tastes old and or flavourless

Fantastic. I had a group and we ordered 19 dishes. All were great except honey garli veal and sesame chicken. Fatty veal, Heavy breading, sauce was good though. Dry breaded shrimp nice light breading served over lettuce so it's not greasy. Veggies all cooked perfectly. We usually go to good earth, they are closed for renovations and their loss because we are switching to dragon palace!

Great Experience. Can't understand the bad reviews, but most seem to be with service. We ordered 19 dishes and they got it to us in an hour. We were all extremely impressed with the dishes. Only bad ones were honey garlic veal, very fatty and heavy breading. Sesame chicken was great flavour, but same heavy breading with little chicken to breading. Contrasting that is the pleasant light dry breaded shrimp served on lettuce to soak up any extra grease. beef and pea pod awesome, curried chicken fried rice outstanding. Good Earth is our usual order in but they were closed for renovations. We are switching over to Dragon Palace!

Love that they have a combo meal available excellent idea for a single person to pick up on the way home. Unfortuanlety I tried to call ahead & no one answered the phone. However when I stopped in and placed my order it was ready very quickly. The meal I had was good. Mixed veggies, consommé soup, fried rice, dry breaded butterfly shrimp, lemon chicken and two small spring rolls. The meal combo came with a samosa but they graciously allowed the spring roll substitute without extra charge.Enough food to have two meals! Everything was tasty except the spring rolls. The inside was mushy and I didn't care for the seasoning. Decor is outdated and dark, could use a freshen up.

Never go again. The food was awful, the service was awful, and they wouldn't take our gift certificate because they said that they were under "New ownership" Had an argument in regard to that. Even though the GC was not even a year old. All the menus were the same, etc. Was not impressed with the way they spoke and treated my elderly parents. If they keep this up, they won't be in business much longer. Would go into greater detail about what happened, but it would probably get deleted.

WORST CHINESE EVER. This was our first time trying Dragon Palace - Everything we ordered was bland, flavorless and cold. We ordered the mooshi pork with crepes which came without the hoisin sauce or the crepes. We got sweet and sour ribs instead of the dry breaded ribs we ordered, almond soo gai and cantonese chow mein. When we called to let them know of the mix up, they sent the things that had obviously just been left sitting on the counter.

Never been so disappointed... this photo depicts exactly where we put our 56 dollar meal - IN THE TRASH!

Horrible New Years dinner! We've been doing an annual New Years Day dinner for two years now. It was our third time being here and all I can say is we were completely disgusted with the food and the service. We made reservations for a table of 12. And compared to our other visits the restaurant was quite busy. Our first visit last New Years the food was delicious, we had no complaints and swore we would do it every year. Well unfortunately we were wrong, and we should have trusted our guts after our visit in the summer when the forgot one of our dishes.
To cut to the chase, this year, the food was horrible. We all ordered a dish and shared everything. Dry breaded veal was red inside, Cantonese chow mein was hard and crunchy, after telling the server about the chow mein she brought us a new dish and it was even crunchier, brought us another one and it seemed like all they did was drench it in sauce. Szechuan chicken was pink inside, spicy ginger chicken was pink inside. They have us a tiny bowl of rice which was barely enough to feed two people and we had to yell at the waitress for her to understand that there were twelve people at the table and we needed more rice. We waited about 20 minutes before anymore even took our order and she forgot to ask us for drinks.
At the end of it all we had to wait again for her to bring us our bill and after sending those 4 dishes back to the kitchen she still charged us for the entire meal. My boyfriend finally went to talk to her and she ended up taking $30 off the bill which wasn't even enough to cover 3 dishes let alone 4. We left very unhappy and still hungry as we couldn't eat the food and the staff just couldn't understand that the food wasn't cooked. I noticed as we left the restaurant that they had a sign that said "under new ownership", which would be why the food quality has taken a plunge after our 2012 visit. Will never ever go back there. Oh and if you are there, don't go to the bathroom, they're are just as disgusting as the food.

Best bang for your $. Live the Hot & Sour soup, full of mushrooms. Uses ham strips instead of BBQ pork, and could stand more shrimp, but still an awesome soup. Decent Szechuan ginger beef, Singapore vermicelli, and super snow. Super snow is a do it yourself lettuce wrap with pork and noodles, hoisin, and chilli oil. Mmmm. Ordered a rum and coke with one ice cube and got a rum and coke full of ice with one scoop of ice cream!!! LOL, a Cuba libre float! Sent it back. Nonetheless, terrific staff, good food.

WAS, WAS one of the best places to eat Chinese, not no more!!!! Asked if they were new owners; "yes". Did you change your menu or the food; "no!" Was one of the worst I've had from Kenora to Vancouver! Showed her what was wrong, no apology! Never going back!
Gustav
WAS great but the owners recently retired. The new owners took over quietly, hoping no one would notice. Unfortunately, you just have to try the food and you can tell. Horrible. Was a regular customer, but will never go back.

Good Food. The lunches are reasonably priced and fulling. For dinner the ginger beef is great, as is the peking duck (order several days in advance). Good place to order take-out from

Typical. Nothing remarkable or unusual here though the samosa appetizer we ordered was very tasty and probably the best part of the meal. They were tiny phylo triangles filled with curry meat. A little Indian flare !!
The chicken in spicy sauce was the stand out dish just because it actually was spicy...but it was still your standard deep fried meat. The tofu and scallops was a great combination of ingredients in a mediocre black bean sauce....the Szechuan ginger beef however was very disappointing and not at all gingery or spicy and instead tasted rather burnt like it had been overcooked... Again breaded and deep fried.
Service was good.
Doubt I would return here though.

It's great enough for me!. I don't know who this ken guy is but I think he may be overeacting. This restaurant is one of the best I've ever been too. Great service and great food too. And I'm not even a regular. I went there once! And I'm definately going back.

I've seen it before, DP can get from empty to full house in no time flat, plus they have like one waitress, which makes sence since it's only a small family restaurant. Emphasis on the small part. They get the service of a moxies restaurant so you can't expect them to keep up ALL the time in such a place.

Honestly I hate people who expect too much from others. Sorry to those who think they're being treated horribly but every time I go to DP they're really nice and not just to me.

But hey, you're entrusted to the right to give your oninion. This is my opinion.

Will never return. I have never been treated so badly at any restaraunt. We were ignored for over an hour and a half. In that time we got one cup of coffee and one of our dishes. When we mentioned that people that had come some time after ,us had gotten their dinner and were ready to leave, we were told that they were her favorite customers. When we decided to give up and leave she started yelling how we were not paying for our whole meal (which we never did get) There was no sorry for the bad service or anything. I am not sure how they stay in business with this kind of attitude to customers.

Great Neighbourhood Chinese. Tasty food, friendly service, quick delivery, what more can you ask for? Deluxe won ton and ginger beef are favorites.
