Review Gami Sushi - Winnipeg

Lindsay Knight
My goodness, from the cute and cozy atmosphere to the absolutely delicious and fresh tasting sushi, to the cute and quaint touches such as slicing the orange for he was was of peeling this place was amazing! Now my favourite sushi place in Winnipeg. No wine or alcohol served but the taste is worth the trip

Great sushi for the price although a few rolls seem a little overpriced. Small but cozy location, not all you can eat.

Very sweet and cozy place, great service, and the friendly faces are definitely a bonus! Feels very cultural and unique, amazing food, delicious ramen and great prices.

Great prices for lunch, dinner is maybe a bit pricy for what you get. Rolls are a great value here, nigiri and sashimi pretty expensive.

Definitely my favorite sushi place. Reasonable pricing with quality sushi. I'm never disappointed.

Very good quality sushi (a lot of attention to detail!) for a very good price!

Great sushi place! I come for lunch or take out for lunch. For 7.99$ you choose two types of sushi and it comes with edamame, orange slices and a citrus type salad. I've had the avocado roll, dynamite roll, yam roll and shiitake roll. All yummy! For 1.50$ you can get some miso soup which is great. The service is excellent. Always greeted with a smile by the server and the cook. Great prices, service and food! Check it out.

We eat here on a regular basis as it's a very convenient location for us. It is always fresh, quick and tasty! Staff and chef are friendly and attentive. The sashimi is fresh and plentiful. Try the spider roll, you won't be disappointed!

I went to Gami as I was in the area and craving sushi. I had the spicy Ramen and dynamite, chicken teriyaki and spicy tuna roll. The Ramen was very similar to the ones you can buy at superstore, which is expected as Ramen is not their main feature. I liked that the sushi didn't have much rice but their rolls are 65% filler. I got a sliver of chicken and tuna in my rolls. I looked at the dynamite roll more closely and I swear they've dubbed the shrimp with imitation crab. Service was great and quick, mostly because it was close to their "break". I'm glad they were able to serve me because I arrived 30 minutes before they closed. My meal was OK, I will only return if I have to.

We go here because it's SO close but also good. The first time I ordered from here (a few years ago) take away everything was good except the tuna titaki. (sp?) We've ordered from here many many times since. It's always been quick and tasty. When I take away at lunch the restaurant is full. The staff is super friendly. It was quite nice when we ate in and had some beer and saki too.

These folks are very sweet and attentive. We go often as it is the closest place to us and they are always happy to see us. There are a lot of options on this expansive menu. They have great lunch deals as well as very attractive and innovative rolls. I'm a big fan of the tempura (shrimp or veggie), the agedashi tofu, and the diversity of options. Great local spot.

Very delicious and beautifully presented. The chef's selection was delightful. Our tea was hot. Everything was fresh, and our service was not only prompt, but friendly and accommodating. The dining area was also nice and homely, though I am not a big fan of televisions in the dining area. We had a great first experience here, and will return.

Big let down. Went today for lunch just after 1pm. Only people there. Had the lunch special. This was my first time having freezing cold sushi, obviously made ahead and refrigerated. This was made worse by the fact I had the Dynamite roll, nothing worse than cold tempura , yet the sushi chef was on the premises. The salad was all vinegar. Really wanted to be impressed as the locale is very handy for me and I eat sushi at least twice a week. My friend was not impressed with her teriyaki beef and I couldn't see much beef. Lovely decor and easy parking, too bad about the food, sushi should be warm and fresh not freezing, Waitress dropped our food, not to be seen again until I had to call her for the bill.

So Glad They Re-Opened!. I often have take out for lunch from here and the food is consistently good and well prepared.
Every sushi, salad and miso soup has been tasty, light and flavourful. In house the lunchtime bento boxes are charming to look at and a real good value to boot. I hope this location can continue to prosper as everything is so fresh and the staff are extremely helpful and courteous!

When I first walked in, I immiadtley knew I could bring my significant other into this little love nest, disguised as a sushi bar, talk about a romantic vibe, if that wasn't enough me an my partner were seated by an elegant well mannered lady dressed in the finest silk linens. I ordered a tender chicken skewer appetizer along with two seperate sushi rolls, the presentation was absolutely flawless, I could barley contain myself at first sight of these immaculate little dishes. Me an my partner finished our dishes quite quickly, the server noticed an seemed slightly shocked.. We told her not to worry an that it was not her fault, its just that we can't contain our grubby little paws when it comes to a neatly wrapped scrumptious roll. We thanked her an the curtious chef immensely an were gone quicker then you can say, "I'll be back".

Wonderful food, exceptional service. I dropped in for lunch the other day and was so amazed with the lunch special for $7.99 which offered several choices and the portions were generous, presentation lovely, and the waitress very helpful. The place was almost full so that is a good indicator for a good neighbourhood restaurant. I'll be going back to try the food in the evening.

New favorite. I just stopped in here for some take-out lunch, and everything was top-notch! Great looking, large pieces of fish on the nigiri, super tasty rolls (I had the spicy combo) and even better spring rolls!

I'll definitely be back RIGHT AWAY. On top of the quality of food, the service was the friendliest I've come across in a very long time. I'm thoroughly impressed.

(Note: As of today though, their debit machine isn't set up, but there is an atm right around the corner)

Win for Wolseley and West End. We were so pleased to see this great little sushi place open again, and even happier when we discovered the old chef behind the counter with his usual smile and welcoming hellos. This place is a gem - great, fresh, beautiful, yummy sushi at great prices. Best Goma Ae in the city, complimentary miso soup, amazing lunch specials. Everyone should visit this place and support them so they stick around!

Open again. As of today October 22nd, the lights are all on and it has reopened.

A suprisingly good sushi house, the shrimp tempura is a definite must have and just for ordering simple rolls you get comped a starter miso soup and salad! we had the spicy tuna roll, salmon roll, veg tempura, shrimp tempura, shitake roll and veg roll. all were great. definitly go if you are in the mood for a palet pleasing treat! we even got orange wedges as a perfect finish

It's okay. I was super excited to have a sushi place right next toy office and the lunch special is great. You get lots of food for like $8. Only they changed how they prepare the salmon roll on the lunch menu. Instead of using real pieces of salmon they use this mushy paste. I mean it sti tastes like salmon... But I hate when chefs do that. Use the real thing!

Winner!. It seems almost too good to be true, a sushi place a block away from our house, with good food, a good selection & at reasonable prices!

I've been by twice with the husband for the lunch special. Basically with that you get a choice of rolls from two lists (we've always opted for tempura yam rolls, shitake rolls & AACs). in a compartmentalized box with some edemame, a salad with house dressing (sweet & fruity), a couple of peices of fruit & a miso soup. A bargain at $7.99. Because we're not such light eaters, my partner & I have also opted to share a sunomono salad, goma ae, agedashi tofu & an order of a la carte inari & tomago (2 peices per order). Partner thinks that the inari tastes more licorioucy than it should but we have been impressed with everything else.

The wait staff is pleasant & attentive. Being a vegetarian, I am accustomed to asking if the sunomono sald can be served without the seafood, and also accustomed to not being understood by the waitstaff and/or cooks & getting the order botched. I have yet to have this problem on my two visits. We're just really happy to have them in the neighbourhood :)

Quality and convenient sushi.. As of June 10th 2012, there are apparently over 40 Sushi restaurants / locations in Winnipeg! With such a huge option of sushi restaurants it's hard to single out the very best and the very worst locations. Fortunately for Gami Sushi, it is considered to be in my top 5 Sushi Restaurants in winnipeg. It ranks high on my list due to several reasons. Quality food, friendly service, and a relatively good location.

A very small restaurant with a great friendly staff. If you ever have the change to visit this restaurant you must try the Kyu Tataki (normally known as Gyu Tataki). A wonderful dish, seared beef which is then submerged in ice cold water to stop the cooking process. From there it's sliced into thin pieces and served with a very tasty side sauce. They have a great selection of tradition rolls with a little bit of western flare. Another dish that is very satisfying is the Chirashi, assorted sashimi on a bed of vinegar rice.

Wonderful!!!. We decided to go to Gami Sushi for the first time tonight!
What an experience. A wide selection and varietyu, beautiful presentation, amazing flavor and texture.
The Chef created a special dish just for us.
Wow!!
We will definately go here again.

They even a variety of selections for the non-sushi lover.

Very nice. We stopped in on a friday night. restaurant was quiet. Service was awesome. You get a started salad and miso soup for free. Our rolls were very tasty and quite inexpensive for the more basic rolls like alaska, and california. they gave us a nice sashimi appe at the end. service was quick, friendly, attentive. we live very close and will forsure be returning customers.

Moderately priced. Clean. Very friendly. Great presentation, orange, salad and soup with order. Only complaint is that bakudan is covered in the tempura flour. And not really spicy.

Reasonable, good food. I went to this restaurant and found it to be clean, cheerful and had good service. I ordered the Red Dragon roll which came with miso soup and a small green salad. I also ordered tuna nigiri. I was impressed especially with the roll and the nigiri which were very generous and tasty. The music was a bit inappropriate - some sort of disco-type music which was so loud I had to ask them to turn it down which they immediately did. Some soft Japanese music would be more appropriate for a sushi restaurant. However I thought I got very good value for my money and will go back.

It's ok.. Nothing memorable, it was okay. This restaurant used to be a Korean pub that sold fire chicken... they still do, but they removed the pub food (like the twister potatoes and snails, oh and the beer) and they added Japanese food.

Kind of pricy but when you order one roll you get a free soup and salad. It's pretty pricy considering it's plain, nothing special, and I could get better at other restaurants. I had a chirashi bowl - the fish was fresh, but the rice was warm and it was kind of hard (you know when you scrape the bottom of the rice cooker? that's what I got). My partner's sushi was okay. He said it was good but it's nothing to be amazed at.

The service was good is all I could say. But otherwise skip this place because there's better sushi places on Portage avenue.

My most recent visit was to Gami Sushi on Portage Avenue, just by Evanson Street.
Gami Sushi has been at this location for a while, but I gather that the ownership is new. They are certainly in the process of introducing a new menu. In fact that last time I was there they had one item that had been written in with marker...However, courtesy is definitely a service trademark at Gami Sushi. If you haven’t already, put this place on your to visit list.
