Review Vern's Pizza - Winnipeg

What is unique about this pizza place is that they load the pizza with toppings and the specialty pizza choices Is unique. My client loves the pizza from here but for me and my fiance we didn't like the pizza. He has been there twice now and that was my first time. I think if they added cheese between the many layers of toppings it might stick better? Everything tends to fall off the pizza. The crust was on the soft side and wasn't flavorful. I believe the sauce makes the pizza but the sauce in this case was lacking flavor as well. Customer service was excellent! Overall not bad

So here it is, 8 pm on a Friday evening, we walk into Vern's Pizza on McPhillips to get a couple slices. Prime time for a pizza joint, right? Especially emerging out of the pandemic, businesses want to make money and be on their game. Nothing. Warming carousel is off. They won't make us any slices! They said "we only have cold slices in the back if you want that." What a stupid marketing plan for the evening, and careless attitude for employees. They didn't even offer to heat up slices for us!! Terrible service. Go figure, they weren't even busy. One order was picked up. We walk outside, another person is pulling up. She asks us if they have slices on the go, lol. Nope, they don't even have any on the go. She left. She wanted 4 slices, we wanted 2. That's $30 they just lost in about 5 mins. Off to the competition! The sad part is that this is the second poor encounter. Normally I would say that it's great pizza. Last time we ordered, they scorched the pizza. It was way overcooked. They did give us a discount NEXT time, but it was supposed to be something special for the mother in law THIS time.

It's decent pizza. The crust tends to a bit mushy. I see what other folks mean about the toppings. It's not a very consistent bite.

Love Verns pizza. Today we had Verns Special.....so good. Pizza arrived hot and earlier than expected. Thanks for delivering to our truck. Looking forward to ordering again

Whose the fella working at the front wearing a black ball cap the right arm with tattoo doesn't give a receipt after placing an order where I was about to be charged for the same order twice when I went to pick it up. Was rude, unfriendly and wouldn't give me his name when I was going to report his behaviour to the manager. Tells me he's the manager and wouldn't give me his name. Two years going to Vern's flushed down the toilet after this encounter. Happy Easter.

Tried Vern's for the first time as we like thicker pizza. I ordered the double double and it was good, however toppings were piled heavily in the center of the pizza and not evenly distributed throughout the pizza. There was a section of the pizza that the dough was slightly undercooked, however saving for leftovers was fine when reheated in toaster oven. I enjoyed the pizza however do not feel the quality was up to par with the price of the pizza. My wife ordered the chicken ranch, toppings were more evenly distributed however the dough in the center of the pizza was undercooked, still raw and goopy. 1 of the 2 pizzas was ok, but at the end of the day do not feel as if the quality lines up with the price. Will likely not be ordering from Vern's again.

Had the T-Rex. Best pizza in the city. If you haven't tried it yet....just do it. Be prepared to pay a little more but it is absolutely worth it

I was driving by after midnight and saw that they were still open and remembered they used to have cold slices for pretty cheap. So I turned around and sure enough they had a few cold slices left for $2.50 each. This is a quality pizza, with good crust, sauce and ample good cheese with lots of meat. Probably the best slice in town available after midnight and definitely the best at that price if you don't mind it cold or warming it up at home. I wish I could give a 4.5 star review because I can't quite go with 5 stars. My only complaint about Vern's is that because they use so much meat, I find it a bit salty. At some point I'll have to order a full pizza with a bit more veggies to meat ratio. Most of their popular pizzas, which they sell by the slice, which become their cold ones, are meat heavy. But I can definitely live with it for one or two slices. No saltier than most other quick, cheap options at this hour.

Absolutely love this place for big pizzas, got the 18" T-Rex this time around and it was a 9.1 out of 10. crust was perfect for a deep pie, buttery and flaky. The sauce had great flavor and tang and the topping tastes like they were sliced fresh that day, not to mention tons of cheese on top. 40 dollars for an 18" pie from Vern's is worth every penny as it would easily feed 4-6 very hungry people with out sides. The staff was just as good as the pie, very welcoming and inviting and made sure to keep you up to date on how long the pie would take if you were waiting for the pie. Thanks Vern's. Also from what i have heard the owner ship has changed hands from the original owners, I read that some people were having issues with the old owners but i can tell you the new owners are awesome!!

Pretty good pizza, extremely filling! I thought it seemed terribly expensive until I tried it, I can barely finish one piece. My only complaint is that when I stop in to get just one slice there is usually only one kind, the one with all the meat. I wish they had at least a couple of kinds to choose from as I usually don't have time to wait. I also agree that they could definitely use more cheese. Definitely a tasty pizza, I'll be back.

We had ordered 2 pizza's from here at my work one day, I enjoyed it so much I wanted my boyfriend to try it, so I ordered the taco pizza, I ordered it a year ago and from what I remember they only had one size? it was 30$, seemed expensive for a pizza, it was extremely loaded it was piled so high with toppings, it was goood.

In my opinion, best damn pizza in town!!!
I stumbled onto Verns pizza in Saskatoon about 12 years ago at the Husky. I was always happy getting loads out there so I could get this amazing pizza. Then one day someone said they were opening a store in Winnipeg.
I was in heaven . I've always ordered the Verns special. It's thick,It's meaty, it's delicious !!!! I've never been disappointed .
I've had the Jets pizza, Canadian and T. rex.
All great all worth the money.. Try it, you'll love it!!!

Vern's Pizza is a SCAM and pizza is not that good !!! One day you pay $5 for 2 slices the next you are paying $5 for 1 !!! Pizza is no name packaged lunch meat with an over powering brown sugar sauce . DO NOT EAT HERE !!! Unless it's to feed your dog ( poor dog )

I used to order from Verns in Saskatoon this may sound crazy but there's always too much meat.

Not my first Vern's but maybe my last. My fifty dollar pizza arrived warm at best and squished on one side. Phoned in was told a new pizza could be done but a long wait due to delivery distance or ten % discount on next order.only problem is not sure if I will ever order again .

Good Pizza. Our first time for Vern's. I had a coupon from the Entertainment Book, so we ordered 12" Vern's Special Thick and received 15" Skinny Thin Crust with Bacon and Tomato - my favourite!
My boyfriend was very impressed with the thickness of the Special, and I was impressed by the deliciousness of the thin crust pizza. The crust was dry on the bottom (not greasy at all) and although the Skinny does not have near the volume of the toppings, that is exactly how I prefer pizza. I would definitely order from there again - next time we want to try the Taco Pizza (I would prefer the Light amount of topping - we may have to fight about that!)
We ordered from the McPhillips Street store, and were impressed with the staff there, and for sure the product . . . . Try it!
It's Me
The pizza is good, lots of toppings but over priced. I paid 42.80 for a 15" pizza and a poutine(4.95).... And Me and my little ones had to wait 2 hours

Excellent experience.. Today I ordered from Vern's Pizza by London street in Kildonan, for the third time, and for the third time, it was excellent. Like some other reviewers have said, the prices are a bit higher than you might be used to from the likes of Pizza Hotline or Domino's, but when I get my food, I know where that extra money went. The pizza box is heavy like crazy, the pizza is so thick and the toppings are enormous.

I'm a big dude who eats pizza.. probably more than he should. And I've tried a ton. Vern's is truly for the hungry man (or lady, lol). This time I ordered the Jets Special (I think it's called), honey garlic wings, and poutine. It was tasty and I couldn't even finish half the pizza... which is saying a lot, coming from me, haha.

I went in to pick up my order because I live like.. almost practically across the street from that location. I went in, was greeted like right away by one cook, and another guy came out, I paid for my food, I had to wait another two minutes for my poutine (I was early). They told me on the phone it would take between 30-40 minutes, which seems very fast to me to be honest. It took almost exactly 40 minutes. Their timing was right on the money. I mean I don't mind waiting anyways, but it was nice that they were accurate. Buddy that I paid was friendly like crazy, I stuffed myself totally full and I have enough food for another meal, plus some more yet.

You pay a little more, like I said, but you get a LOT of food, and to me, it was delicious like crazy. That's three excellent experiences I've had in a row. I would really recommend this to someone who's okay with paying a little more (one large original thick crust pizza, 1 pound of wings, an order of poutine and four cans of Pepsi costed me 55 bucks, but as I said, to me, that's like three very large meals for me, which I find.. totally reasonable.) I'll upload a picture of my pizza. -Scott.

Awesome Pizza!. I ordered a large Greek pizza for pickup. While ordering I was asked if I minded that they are putting bacon on instead of the beef. This was due to the XL beef recall I was told. The staff on the phone and at the time of pickup were very friendly.

The pizza did not disappoint. Loaded with toppings as promised, tasted very delicious. Will definitely be back again!

Intense. Have had it a few times and have enjoyed it every time. Verns special is loaded with meats and I could barley finish 1 slice. Must try if you are looking for something other than 222.

I had there pizza at the east kildonan location for the very first time and the pizza looked good from the flyer but when we ordered it all you can tasted is salt big time , it's like they poured 2 coffee cups full of salt on each pizza , for the price I payed I should have Santa Lucia pizza and I woulda been more happy with that choice

We order from Vern's pizza fairly often, probably about once every two to three weeks. We really like the pizza because it tastes homemade.

However, had one terrible customer service recently. Ordered pizza without olives and mushrooms. Pizza arrives with both toppings, although it is clearly printed on our bill that it should not have these toppings. When we call back, the supervisor says he will send out a new pizza in half an hour but we can't eat any of the wrong pizza and they need to take back the wrong pizza. When I explain that we have 3 kids and can't wait 30 more minutes to feed our kids, he says it is policy to collect the wrong pizza and not offer a discount or additional food for the mistake. When I explain that his offer is giving us what we order 30 minutes later than we wanted, without any compensation, he says that is policy.

He then offers to have me speak to a manager, but says he is not available. I ask him to have a manager call me back right away. The manager calls back and explains that it is policy to collect any incorrect pizza without any discounts, but agrees to let us keep the wrong pizza and deliver a new one in 30 minutes, saying they would have thrown out the wrong one anyway.

In the end, I shouldn't have to argue over something that was their mistake, and will really make me think twice about ordering from them in the future.

Good, but overpriced.. My family didn't have the greatest experience with Vern's a couple months ago, but I've become level-headed enough to review on it properly now. My dad came back from Saskatchewan raving about how big their pizzas were so we decided to order it one day for a family meal. Even though the prices are probably the most expensive in the city ($20+ for some of the medium specialty pizzas); we're not really ones to shy away from paying for quality. In total our order came to over $50 for 1 medium (Double-Double for the kids) and 1 XL Greek pizza. The Double-Double was OK for the kids and relatively thick for them, but there was massive disappointment with the Greek. Although it tasted great, it was only 1' thick and we were expecting close to twice that. We wound up needing some extra leftovers from a previous meal to fill us up.

Needless to say we contacted the manager about this, and we have to give them full marks & credit for their response. The manager of the location called us himself the next day and offered us the explanation behind why the pizza was so thin. Vern's follows specific guidelines for each pizza ordered. They have formulas and weight scales for each pizza to follow as they're made and follow them to a 'T'. However, the problem with our Greek pizza is that we ordered it with no pepperoni and extra ground beef instead. Unfortunately Vern's recipe calls for a large amount of pepperoni on the Greek pizza and only a little bit of beef in relation. The person making the pizza followed the recipe properly and added a double-portion of beef while removing the pepperoni, but this left for a sorely thin and unfilling pizza (despite its' great taste!).

After explaining this, the manager offered us a replacement pizza of our choice for $10+tax (around 75% off) and asked what exactly we're looking for in a pizza. He recommended the Taco pizza which we wound up having for lunch the next day. Sadly, we didn't really enjoy the pizza too much; all the loose beef caused the slices to wilt and slide around in our hands as we ate. It was difficult for my Wife & I to handle, let alone our kids.

We definitely appreciated the extra effort that Vern's went to in order to satisfy us as a customer and can't put any blame on them for that or for the mixup with the original order. They definitely redeemed themselves for the confusion and allowed me to make this review based on the quality of the pizza and not on the basis of feeling ripped off for the high price and a thin pizza.

I'm sure there are some items on the menu that we haven't tried yet that warrant the price, and I'm very impressed with the company willing to go the extra mile to make their customers happy. Just make sure that when you order that you like everything there is on the pizza because it can prove dangerous to tweak the toppings around. Overall I say Santa Lucia is better overall based on quality and price, but I can still see us trying Vern's again in the future because of their efforts.

Pizza flavour: 8.5/10
Price: 5/10
Overall experience: 7/10

4 heavy eaters ordered two verns pie's during an evening poker game. The pizzas are so loaded with toppings we coulda sufficed with just ordering one pizza, they are seriously filling. Normally I eat a full large gondola pizza to myself, with Vern's, I ate 4 pieces, that were cut in squares. We got the mamma Mia and the taco. They're both a knife and fork. Picture buying 125 grams of sand which meat and putting it on Just one slice of pizza. To be quite honest, this is a case where more is actually less. The wow factor of the toppings falls short in taste. It's different and worth trying, if you don't mind spending 75$ on two pizzas that don't "meat" your standards.

BIGGG TOPPINGS... BUT NOT BEST. Vern's is ok. Food is fresh, but best?
First off let's compare what we get... This is not for those thin crust light on everything, wood fired eclectic pizza crowd. This is for the "stick to the ribs" have trouble eating half a pizza crowd.
The sauce is a bit sweet, and generally I like thin crust with either light or lots of toppings...
The best Lots of topping?? It is a close call between The Garwood Grill on Garwood at Pembina Hwy. Their meat lovers or specials likely weighs more than Vern's is cooked better, and the sauce is less sweet.
Vern's sauce is a bit sweet.
In 2nd place or tied for 1st with Garwood is Santa Lucia.
I have not tried all their locations but the revamped St. Mary's and the one on Main St. are outstanding.
Again one can get lots of toppings on a thin crust. Fresh
and delicious. Santa is a bit generous on the sauce so ask them to go a bit easy, unless you like really really saucy pizza.
Vern's worth the try, the others for my tastes are better.

Epic pizza! This place is for CARNIVORES.

Hated It - Awful Experience. The pizza was mediocre and has been over-hyped.

The customer service was downright awful. The girl who answered the phone was new and didn't know her stuff but that is forgivable.

We told the girl that we are paying by debit but when the driver came he didn't have his machine and I didn't have enough cash. I managed to scrummage enough money by borrowing from a roommate.

However, this driver who did not have a debit machine also didn't have any change. We paid for it anyways.

We decided to complain about this inconvenience to the store. When we did, we were insulted and it was insinuated that we were lazy and simply looking for a free pizza.

I will not order from here again and I will not recommend this place to anyone. This is the first time I have ever chosen to not go to a restaurant on principal alone.

Real Pizza. This is how pizza is supposed to be! The flame thrower pizza was great tasting but not nearly as spicy as i was expecting. The T Rex is the Meat lovers and is just fantastic, lots of meat. The Verns Special was also great. You get what you pay for here. I have no problem spending $30 on a pizza when its this good.

I think this is the best take out pizza in the city. A little pricey but well worth. This is not cheap pizzas like those two for one joints. The Mama Mia is my fave.

This could be a great pizza but it needs a bit of adjusting. The main problem is that there is too little cheese, which means that it doesn’t hold together. It needs three times as much cheese to bind the amount of ingredients. If they cut down a little on the meat and increase the vegetable matter, this would be a perfectly balanced pizza on a perfect crust.
