Review Southern Spices - Winnipeg

Best dosa in the city. Tried Butter masala dosa (10/10). But don’t recommend dine in. This place needs a complete makeover. The tables were not cleaned, not even wiped after someone leaves. Fruit flies all over the place. The employees were trying really hard, but it looked like they were short staffed. Management should consider improving ambience/ presentation for the restaurant and the food.

If you go to this place don’t order anything other than Dosa Their curries are stale and bread is straight outta freezer (you can find it at the walmart 5 for 2$) Their is no consistency in their dosa. Eat same dosa 3-5 times and you will know. This is not the only dosa place is Winnipeg You can find better Dosa at other restaurants like Royal Paan and Shahi Flames Dont you dare go their restrooms They are always so gross

We had delicious “South Indian” food here, and taste was so good. Great place to visit.

Not bad at all. Im satisfied to my food. I love south indian food. I ordered fish thali. Its my first time here. All foods looks good in the picture. Ill try other menu next time. One thing I notice here is no enforcement in vaccination card. They just ask me if i have a vaccine already and when i said yes they guide me in the table. No checking or proofing. In this pandemic, enforcement is needeed and important. The government rules is useless if no support or enforcement in the community.

This humble, unassuming restaurant continues to surprise me with their delicious food and kind wait staff. Better cleanliness, better lighting, and comfortable seating is something I wish they work on to ensure a more elevated experience. Fun fact about tipping at this restaurant - You need to pay at the desk near the door after you finish your meal and they don't charge a tip by default. Either ask them to allow you to add a tip on the machine when paying by card, or simply leave a tip for your wait staff at the table. The service is slow, but the food is delicious.

Worst ever experience of having Dosa. If you're a dosa lover don't ever go to this place. No presentation skills at all. And I have never seen such a bad stuffing and filling inside a dosa. Initially the dosa I ordered had big and not at all mashed potatoes and then they gave me a replacement which had a pathetic filling. Total waste of my money and time. Drove from north end to south and went back home in a discontentment. NOT WORTH IT.

It had good crispy dosas . Overall decent place for having South Indian cuisine. We were driving from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay and found it very convenient en route . Happy that my kid could eat her comfort food. Would certainly return if in this area again. Washrooms need some renovations though.

Chicken Biriyani was so so. Mango milkshake and gulab jamun were too good

The worst Indian food and customer service in town. We Ordered a Mutton Biryani, Mutton Curry and Chicken 65. I was amazed to see how unbelievabaly bad the biryani was . The Biryani was smelling and was spoilt , Goat was so chewy and and the gravy was sweet and the chicken 65 was also awful. We lierally had to throw away all the food. I have never eaten such bad food ever. They gave us spoilt/Stale Biryani and horribly tasting sweet Goat curry. Other than the bad food the highlight is the restaurant manager. He is such a nasty man who has no sense of customer service. When I called them right after reaching home the guy in the restaurant apologized and promised us refund but said he wanted his manager's approval. Later the manager came on the phone and started yelling at me saying that the guy did not know anything and he will not be refunding us. He was not ready to take feedback and accused me of lying. He said i made him upset and just went on screaming at me. When i asked him why was he yelling he said he did not want to listen about his food lol and that this is Canada and not India and I am lying for a refund. I had to hang up because i was so shocked first at the food and then at the manager's pathetic behaviour. Please save yourself the trouble and dont order from these guys. They will give you spoilt food and when you call and complain they will scream and misbehave with you and Will keep on telling you this is Canada not India. As if everyone is a liar in India. Disgusting how he can talk about his own country after coming to Canada!!!

We went here to experience a new Indian place for our anniversary and were not disappointed! We have travelled extensively through Asia, and we were soooo happy to find a place with genuine South Indian food. We ordered the masala dosa, which was nice and crispy, and had a curried potato mash on the inside. It also came with a small bowl of tasty dhal on the side as well as several dipping sauces.

Next came our 3 mains (we ordered waaaay too much, but wanted to try some different dishes and have some for home too). These mains were 1) Chicken Varuthara, 2) Beef Curry (thick gravy), and 3) Vegetable Korma. The first 2 dishes were absolutely fantastic, complex flavours that made me remember Asia, and realize how bland most "Butter Chicken" dishes are in Winnipeg. They were also quite different in flavour profile. The Korma was good, but not great; it was a white style Korma with a strong focus on black pepper. All around it was still a great dining experience, but we mostly just care about really delicious food - and we were not disappointed.

We WILL come back for sure. But we will only order one of the South Indian dishes each and maybe a dosa, depending on how hungry we are.

This is by far the best Indian food I have had in Winnipeg.Absolutely love the kappa biryani.the food has the perfect amount of spice.and it delivers what the menu says perfectly unlike other restaurant where spicy means addition of chilli flakes n blandness.really love southern spices and wish it was open nearer to polo park area.
I wish I could leave a review on the food but unfortunately we never had the chance to try it. Showed up at 5:15 today and walked into the restaurant but no one was there to greet us. We seated ourselves in a booth and waited 10 minutes still no one came. We left. We crossed the street and had amazing Vietnamese food.

I generally love Indian food but I might have been naive to these particular flavours. I ordered the Indian omelette, knowing it had green curries but it was so completely covered/coated I couldn’t taste anything else. Had two bites and was dying i couldn’t do it. Then I got the south India style veg cutlet which said it had vegetables, bread crumbs, garlic, onion, potato, and ginger, which sounds unreal. Don’t know if there was way too much ginger or why it tasted so spicy but it was burning my mouth off. Now I am aware this type of restaurant is not always for me, but based on that description of menu item I felt it would be okay. It wasn’t it was awful. Last I tried the tomato and onion uttapam and same thing. Just wayyyyyy too much spice in it and I couldn’t eat it at all. Hated everything. And I’ll reiterate that I normally love Indian food but I guess South Indian food is a lot different?

Terrible service and the food was just as bad... No effort put into making or serving the food, and the quality of the lamb was poor. The waiter had zero personality and the food did not look like what was on the menu. Will never be back!!!

Mediocre food with very small, over sauced portions. Butter chicken is literally one small chicken breast, cubed. Navratan is the smallest portion I've seen and sauce is thin. Nan was odd - seemed almost like it was deep fried.
Great food. Original less greasy paper dosa. You have to try the dosa. Tea is great. Authentic South Indian food. They make it fresh. The best South Indian restaurant in Winnipeg.

Hi
Happened to visit this restaurant yesterday with my family who were hailing from Kerala & longed for some South Indian dishes 😍.So we went ahead & ordered beef ulayarthitathu which seemed like something which has lost or forgotten its identity, unfortunately worst beef one could have😱.we Also ordered chicken chettinad- forget the dish name was chicken chettinad, just eat as chicken one will like chicken pieces moreover both the curries tasted& looked same, not to mention the jeera rice 🍚 which came with curries( duper 😱😱). The South Indian coffee tasted tasteless with higher amount of water in it. At last the Kerala parotta which tasted soo delicious-soft, tender - unfortunately we can make out it's was frozen, which was reheated in a tawa! The Cook is Doing SOMETHING which he is not known for , that's what we could realize after having food . Restaurant ambience looks nice, nice parking lot, not expensive for the worst food. WILL NOT REPEAT 😐

Yesterday I been to southern spices as I was referred by my friends. First I thought it would be same as other Indian restaurant but I was wrong. The dishes I had like dosa , beef curry and kerala style chicken curry made my day. Chicken n beef were perfectly cook as I want it to be soft and was perfectly flavoured. Dosa was served with sambhar, coconut and tomato chutney. I can still feel the taste. Service was awesome. It would be worth to say after so many years in Canada I can say this is the food I was looking for from Indian restaurant. Thank you southern spices staff for serving me authentic taste of South Indian food

I have been to this place twice. I have tried several different type of dosa and kothurotti. I suggest this place to anyone who is looking for the real south indian taste. I have tried several other places and this one seems to be the one with the real south indian taste. They make fresh vadai-it is really yammmi...kappa biriyani and beef fry are awsome.

I have been to this restaurant twice already and still planning to go there several more times as their dosas are exceptionally good. I am so glad that we finally have an actual south Indian cuisine in Winnipeg that is authentic and traditional. Though not from the southern part of India, I had spent some quality time in Banglore, Chennai and Kerala and this place and their food, just brought back some memories of those days in my life.

It's one of the good restaurant in Winnipeg they provide very othetic food as a South Indian traditional manner. we did not get such a kind of South Indian food expecially dosas , biriyani and kothuporotta in Winnipeg, I knew that they started just 15 days ago, since their services was excellent. I strongly recommend southern spices .

Worst experience ever. I ordered some dosa (South Indian dish) and some usual North Indian fare of butter chicken and goat curry with naan and rice.

The dosa was small and soggy. The sides were skimpy and lacked flavor.

The butter chicken comprised of tiny baked pieces of chicken with tomato paste sweetened with ketchup.

The goat curry was tough and consisted of cheap cuts with more fat and bone than meat.

Now the worst part - the naan which is priced at 2.99 a price is actually a store bought frozen naan that was reheated and cut in smaller pieces.

The rice was not fresh to start with, and was some low quality variety. It wasn't basmati rice.

Not sure if there is one descent Indian restaurent in this city that serves freshly cooked "authentic" Indian food. Tired of all these places taking shortcuts and cooking once a week and serving reheated food the rest of the week.
