Review Laos Thai - Winnipeg

Gil
Had the chicken fried rice and calamari. The chicken was nice and cripsy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Calamari was lightly breaded.

Really amazing place!! Definitly a must try Thai place. Personally, I think this beats all the other Thai places I've been to. Seriously, you need to give this place just one chance. I ordered the Pad Thai and the Coconut Curry (#14 on menu) and it tasted really, really good! The chicken was very well done and has flavour to it as well!! The Pad Thai has peanuts on it, which I generally don't like on my food, and the Curry had bamboo in it, which again I generally do not like; but these two things were easy to forget about because the dishes themselves were simply delicious!! It is quite a small place but the woman who was running it was very, very kind and sweet and was amazing with her service, as she was serving while cookin and taking the orders of the customers. This had a bit of a wait time for the food BUT regardless, hot damn, wait worth the wait!! Definitrly try this place out!!😋😋👌🏼👌🏼

This place has some of the best thai I have ever eaten. We went here with a large group of friends who pretty much filled up the entire small restaurant. The owner and his wife were amazing cooks and their young daughter was there helping out her parents. She was so cute and so fun so we all tipped her (as well as her parents well). We spoke to the owner and he told us that he opened the restaurant so his kids could have a good life. The restaurant is filled with family photos and you can see that they really love their kids. They made us feel welcome and as though we were part of the family for the night. They even stayed open late just for us. I can't wait to go back here again because it truly was one of the best restaurant experiences I've had in a while.

Fantastic! Top 3 in chicken fried rice I have ever tasted. Must try.

The food here is authentic, fresh and SO good! One of the very best Thai restaurants in the city. Exceptional soups and THE BEST pad thai you will ever taste! This family run business is friendly and great for accommodating groups or take out. They are opening another location in Toronto off Queen St. You will not be disappointed! Eat in, take out, or order for delivery, or through "Skip the dishes".

I ❤️ this North End gem. It’s the restaurant you know only exists either because you live in the area or you’re friend took you there. It is small with only about six tables (3 large booths). Food is a combination of Laotian and Thai cuisine. I’ve had the Pad Thai, Green Curry Soup, Lemon Grass Soup, Tofu cold salad rolls...all fabulous. Service is great. If you’re a Thai Foodie...you must try.

This place is your future favorite Loation & Thai food restaurant. Think "best kept secret" meets "hole in the wall." The owner will remember you from visit to visit. He'll remember your favorites. Lunch time is basically always regulars coming back for more. Flavorful, without being overly salty or spicy. Fresh spices and herbs. If you're lucky enough to get a seat at one of the 5 tables, you're in luck. They also do Skip The Dishes, but only when they're not too busy.

This place has the best pad Thai in the city hands down. I don’t go anywhere else for pad Thai. Also their fried chicken and rice #23 on the menu is delicious. Sad they don’t deliver and it’s kinda far to travel but worth it. The owner is very friendly. 6/5.

Ordered through Skip the Dishes. We ordered crab rangoon, chicken pad Thai and green curry soup. Seeing as their spice level maxes out at 4, I decided to try for level 2 which was pretty spicy. We needed a couple glasses of milk to settle the spice. As for the food, the Crab Rangoon was delicious. Pad Thai was a miss - was missing the flavour and noodles were over cooked. This dish reminded me of Filipino Palabok. Green curry soup was alright. Overall I wasn't too impressed with the food. Im glad to have tried a new thai restaurant but I'll be sticking to our regular restaurant for our thai favorites.

Anyone not giving this place 5/5 is not correct. Don't read their review. This place is awesome.
Best to visit in the day time mind you, but a minor deterrent...
Get the souk guai if ure ballsy with the spicy.
One of the best restaurants.

The Owners son is always drunk and he is often the server on the weekend. He looks drunk and High most of the time. He invites his other drunk friends and they hang out in the small restaurant. Customers don't want to eat at a place where the server is drunk and high. Food is very good.

A friend recommended I check this place out for their soup if I was feeling under the weather-which I am. Unfortunately I came w/o the name of it. By the time I got the name of it I had already placed my order. We went with the following:

#14, the egg came to us hard boiled. The broth was great-the noodles were just ok + over cooked. Celery focused dish that I could do w/o. C+

#11, like congee w a bit more depth but in noodle form. Noodle to broth ratio 1:3. Never had the round rice noodles before, interesting. B

Chicken Chunks - For 8$, I feel that their should have been a few more pieces (perhaps w bone in+skin?) and a sauce that didn't come from a bottle-nice coriander garnish tho. A bit too salt to sense the aromatics. C+

It's been a while since I was here, but it was an okay experience. It is family run, tucked in a small space in the north end so it is a hidden spot that serves decent food.

I got the Chicken Mee Sallat and Shrimp Rolls. The Mee Sallat was fresh and was it was good, although there was barely any chicken. Shrimp Rolls were crispy and satisfying as well.

Considering the area, serving size, competition and taste, it could be better, but good enough. They should be more generous with the meat in their dishes as well.

Not a place I crave for or visit on a regular basis but I'll give it a try again and try other dishes.

Give it a try as well! It's local and family run so that is always a plus!
Cindy
I am not sure if something happened during delivery or what, but this is TOTALLY not acceptable.
I have received my order of #7 and #23 from the menu, and these are the deliveries I got.
#23 is barely OK and #7 is just.... I am speechless and very disappointed.
May I just say, not only were the chicken in #23 look like stones, there were supposed to be 10 juicy fried shrimps, I got 8 dried up frozen shrimps.
I have not yet tasted it, and doubt I will ever. I hope they do a better job dining in but I am never going to this restaurant ever again.

Lao Thai is a fantastically unique find in Winnipeg and should not be missed by anyone looking for a unique twist on traditional Western Thai food. Ignore the somewhat meager looking exteriors as the food here is excellent. Balance of flavours result in a robust and surprisingly light meal that tickles all the senses. Only caveat is the liberal use of chilis might be a turnoff for some, but do note that the spice level is customizable (from 1 to 5). Do yourself a favour and get some traditional Lao food here!
Grandforks227
Yummy Food, the Owner is a very good cook and friendly too !!!. We always went to her previous location on St. Anne's Road. Now we drive to the north end. Food is always consistently very good.
Eric.victor
Will make the drive. Used to be at the end of my street. Still make the drive to the new location, no questions. Best pad thai. Best crab rangoon.
Dogg_pound911
Wicked. The food is amazing, I have never been disappointed, the crab cakes are to die for.
Elaine
Been eating here for 3 years. Never had any regrets! Food is great but i find it pricey. But all is great! The owner is very nice and the servers. Love this place

Does NOT deliver city-wide. With all the hype about this place delivering city-wide, be warned that's simply not the case. They've outsourced delivery to skipthedishes and apparently my central winnipeg address does not qualify for delivery. They will not take delivery orders by phone. Would love to try them but I'm not taking the bus to the North End just to get takeout!
Foodie204
The best !!! My whole fam loves this restaurant. The ham nam is amazing, the crab Rangoon is to die for, and the chicken with fried rice I could eat almost every day of the week. Don't forget to try the number 11 which they don't have all the time, but when they do it is an absolute must.
Intrepid Diner
Unpretentious and Good. This is a small restaurant. There are two tables and three booths. When I was there it was only half full at lunch. There was a large bucket in the middle of the floor half full of water. The fact that the restaurant is so small really makes the bucket stand out. Nothing fancy about the decor.

You pick up a menu before seating yourself. The menu gives a description of the ingredients involved and also provides a photo of the menu items. There was a flat screen tv on the wall, which is a nice touch. Near as I can tell, the place is run by a mother/son team. They were extremely friendly.

Our food took a few minutes to prepare. I tried the souk gai with chicken. You select your own spice level from 1 to 4. I picked 3...I should have gone with 2, it was very spicy, but oh so good. There were a lot of good sized chunks of chicken in the soup. It also comes with rice. If you run out of rice, they offer to provide more, free of charge. It is a large bowl. It was all I needed to fill up for lunch.

I would not hesitate to go back to this place.

Delicious!. We came across this place while looking for a Thai restaurant that was open for lunch on Saturday. I'm glad we came here, it was delicious! The restaurant itself is very small, but that didn't matter at all. I enjoyed the calamari and the Lao Pad Thai, and the green curry was alright, but it was the Gang Som Hyet (#18) that stole the show. I would go back just for that. I recommend you try eating here for delicious Thai cuisine.

Never fails!. I love Lao Thai! Their boneless chicken with fried rice is my absolute favourite! The chicken is so crispy and the fried rice is pretty good itself! I've also tried their ham nam wraps, which were delicious! The owners are super friendly and service is great! I've never had them deliver but seriously, $5 for city-wide delivery!? Wow.

We love this place. It is our favourite Asian haunt going on two years now.

Decor... Minimalist? Well if it was good enough for Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, its definitely good enough for us.

Cuisine, outstanding! Insert whatever superlative you prefer, they all fit. I honestly have never had anything disappoint me and the salad rolls, if they weren't so much work, they would be mandatory.

Service is amazing, whether its mom, son or even the 10 year old, or so, granddaughter, smiles and laughter abound.

One thing, there's a new menu which isn't on this website yet.

SC

Great place and great ppl.. I've been eating here for quiet sometimes and never been let down... They have a new menu and I love the new #18 and #28 those mushroom are soo good!!! And of course my usuall #4 and #34... Alil sad to see some of my other items from the old menu go but bright side for those that can't make it to the northend. They deliver city-wide through Skipthedish.ca

Excellent food. As others have stated, place is small but the food is huge on flavour. My new favourite place. The stuffed crab app is delicious, same with the lemongrass marinated beef jerky. I also hade the fried chicken and rice, and the other reviewer is right, it is really good. I'm going to try some soups for lunch next time. Don't be thrown off because of we're its located, definite a must try place in Winnipeg.

Love Lao Thai!. The restaurant space itself is small, however the food definitely makes up for it, and I don't mind grabbing take out anyway.
The service here is always prompt, and super friendly.

My go-to is the Boneless fried chicken and fried rice, which has great cripsy chicken skin and tender chicken, and a peppery fried rice. Some people may think it's overrated, but until someone else can make it with the same quality I'll definitely keep coming back.

DEELISH. Excellent food and cheery service. Our family's favorite dishes: shrimp rolls, minty super yum mee sallat w/ chicken, oddly satisfying crunchy comfort food ham nam wrap, crispy flavourful mee kop w/shrimp. The spicy dishes are great too, and the service is always cheery. Don't know what some of the other reviewers are going on about, I really like these folks!

Authentic. I haven't had Thai food this good since I was living in Thailand! The dishes are very reasonably priced, everything under $10.00, the service was great and all of the dishes were very fresh and full of flavour.

Great Food. Ordered for the second time in a month from Lao Thai and it's been very very VERY good. Best Thai food so far! I will definitely be ordering from them regularly. YUM!
Kevin
Great food nice people, emmas crazy. Ive been eating at lao thai for years And never had a problem. The owners are nice easy going people an the food is great. I have no idea what emma is talking about. Emma says there is a bucket on the floor for a leaking roof, how can you have a leaking roof in the winter. The owner uses it to clean his shoes because hes in and out all day with deliveries and likes to keep the restaurant clean for his customers. There are good reviews for a reason... Maybe its just that time of the month emma, i feel sorry for uour husband. Thanks :)

Went there tonight with a couple friends, the lady came and poured us water, then left, was not friendly, didn't seem interested. She came back we ordered our food, didn't ask us if we wanted something to drink. Ordered spring rolls, were good, sauce was watery. Food was terrible, had the curry chicken it taste like sour milk and soap...I can eat anything but none of us could stomach this soupy stuff. We had the noodles and veggie and chicken dish, noodles were hard and carrots were raw and cold. The only thing edible was some steak sliced up, but beside it was wilted broccoli, WOW could not believe the hype. Very plain food, they asked us if we wanted to take the food home with us we said NO...Just got back from mc Donald's what does that say...ow ya and when you walk in they have a towel on the floor, for you too wipe your feet, and a bucket for the leaking ceiling..well never go back..

DEADLY. This place is serious the food is all ways Delicious i just ordered the lao beef,HAM NAM(killer), souk gui, and some sticky rice for the sauce that comes with the lao beef chicken fried rice and crispy chow main are some more of my favorites a MUST EAT!!!

Amazing food... Laos beef steak, souk-gai, gang pet, pat-Thai, and the boneless chicken friedrice is tha bomb... Love this place and be back for more

Menu and courtesy. This tiny restaurant is absolutely wonderful!. The care that is taken in the kitchen to provide these wonderful dishes to the lucky few who find a table at the right time is outstanding. The very best in Winnipeg. I tell everybody I know about this friendly , warm restaurant... with indescribably good food.
I wish their premises were bigger.. as the word gets out, there will be no room for more than about 22 fans of this great place. I think I could go there everynight...
Kevin
Top notch Thai and Laotian food. Some of the best I've had outside of South East Asia. Glad to see them back on Selkirk avenue.

Always Super. I have followed Som and his mom from the Selkirk street location out to St. Vital and back again. Always order the Sook Gai. Simple but satisfying soup with chicken, garlic, ginger and cilantro and a fiery thai pepper kick. Just the thing if you feel a cold coming on. The red and green curry stir fries are awesome as well (Red curry with shrimp being my personal fave). The menu has recently expanded and on a recent visit we were offered a sample of a delicious chicken and oyster mushroom dish that was a little salty but very good overall. The location is dodgy and I can see some customers being reluctant to check it out, but if you can overcome that, and the fact the place only has 5 tables, you are in for a treat.

Always leave happy. This restaurant is the BOMB!!! It's just a small little place with only a few tables. They do deliver and many people place orders for picking up. We have been here only twice now, but it is our go to location for future dates. I highly recommend the Gang Pet (red curry w/green beans) or if you think you're getting a cold take on their Souk Gai (spicy, ginger garlic soup). If you don't know what to order they will customize something for you. Most dishes are only $10, which is a steal for the great food you'll enjoy.

Im a big eat n love my steak.. Gotta say... Their steak and that souk gai combination was really impressive and that sauce for that steak is to die for... They also sell that sauce for $15 so without hesitating i bought it... Love this place and highly recommend it place

Chock full of yum. I have been going to Lao Thai for 6 years now and have been following them from location to location. I have tried most of the Thai restaurants in town and they simply can't compare. If you haven't tried no. 32 (Gang Keo) on the menu, then you are denying your tastebuds of something truly special. Authentic Thai herbs are used and you can smell them cooking and see them in your dish. I try and tell everyone about this jewel of a restaurant. The salad rolls are delish and have cilantro in them. The sauce they serve with it is amazing. If you need more rice it is complimentary.
You all have tried Thom Yum soup now try the best!!
The Souk Gai soup is also a must have. They also will cook a crab for you if you give 24 hours notice but its not on the menu.
Little known secret :). I can't say enough about this place.

Delicious!. We called for a delivery order, which was a bit of a hassle. I wasn't familiar with the menu but they were able to email it to me which was handy. We had to tell them our picks and then they called back with the total. They had to call us back three times AND they don't have a debit/credit machine for the driver which was quite annoying. Luckily when the food finally got here it was really good. I'd probably order again

Yes, they deliever... pretty much anywhere.. Awesome restaurant, first discovered it in St. Vital, and have followed them to the north end. Like it says in the title, they deliver, and if you order enough they will pretty much take it anywhere. Ample portions, consistent quality, and the price is right. Try it all, you won't be disappointed.

So good!!. This is the 2nd time we have tried (and wouldn't be the last time). We have tried many Thai resturants in Winnipeg. I can say this is the best one in terms of taste and value for the money we spent. The staff are friendly but most importantly it is authentic Lao and Thai..I know the fact. We like the dish because they are so fresh and you can actually taste the quality and the owner is a great chef..Love it

Menu item #24, I believe it's the boneless chicken with fried rice. Hands down, one of the, if not the, best tasting chicken in Winnipeg so far! 10 thumbs waaaay up!!!!
Sweet And Spicy
Worth the trip!. I live in West wpg and heard through a friend many years ago about this tiny thai place in st. vital. I made the trip and it did not disappoint. I loved everything I ordered. Big portions. Plenty of leftovers. Especially loved the Beef Jerky. There is no where else in the city like it. I wish they delivered or had another location, otherwise I recommend to anyone asking about a good place to eat.

I wish every night was thai night!. My boyfriend and i LOVE this restaurant, he introduced me to it a year ago. It's a cute little restaurant, ran be an amazing family! I dont think there has been a time ive been there and ive not been greeted with a smile. The green curry is TO DIE for!!! And their hand made spring rolls, with a peanut style dip, are hands down the best I have ever eaten!
Love_myfood
This is a lovely Thai restaurant!! It is family run and the food is excellent. We usually order the Stuffed Crab Wontons, Shrimp salad rolls and Mee Krob. It's always well prepared and the taste is amazing, I also recommend the Pad Thai.

Great little place. My husband and I love this little place on St. Anne's. It's a small family run restaurant. The prices are moderate, they have started raising some of their prices, as is the recent trend lately, but is still lower than most other Thai places.
My husband and I love the #19 Souk Gai - a clear soup with ginger, lime, cilantro and slices of chicken and bits of red chili, so it definitely has that spicy kick -- really warms you up on a cold winter day . Everything can be ordered on spice level of 1 to 4. I'd recommend a 2 for moderate spice. We also love the pad thai, and any of the curry dishes.

Must try!. The beef jerky appetizer sounds odd, but is addictive. Never disappoints.
AoTT
Green Curry Tofu. Although I liked the spiciness of the dish as I ordered it a 3 out of 4 I found it to be really quite average in the ingredients. It mostly consisted of broccoli. Serving size however was generous and cost $10.
DineoutGal
Spicy & Yummy!. What a great little Laotion/Thai place in Old St. Vital! The menu has pictures of all their dishes so that's a great help if you're unfamiliar with this type of cuisine. You can also set the level of spiciness from 1-4 (with 4 being really spicy). Many of the dishes are spicy but there are a few that aren't for those of you who don't want to damage your mouth. All dishes are under $10 and great to share. I loved the #19 Souk-Gai which is a spicy and fragrant soup with ginger, cliantro, thai chili peppers, and sliced chicken. #32 Gang-Keo is chicken in a green curry and coconut milk sauce with veggies is another rich and spicy dish to try.
OmNomNom
So full!. I've been here few times and every time is a treat... my favorite dishes are the yellow curry with chicken and the pad thai ... mmmm

Lao Thai is wonderful. Wonderful small restaurant with the whole family working inside. Terrific dishes - the Shrimp Thai Fry is amazing. The dishes are large and very tasty, prices are reasonable.
