Review Plaza Restaurant - Winnipeg

miko1gin
My #1 go to Chinese restaurant in Winnipeg. Have been ordering here for over 20 years. My favourite dish is the Plaza Chow Mein but I have liked everything I have ordered from here.

Prices are great and the food is delicious. I ordered wonton soup and sweet n sour pork. The plate had generous helpings of pork, sauce and fried rice with two spring rolls. Would definitely recommend.

Great food, worth the price. Delivery was about an hour as they said. We ordered Szechuan Chicken, chow mein, lemon chicken, spring rolls and chicken fried rice. All of the food was very tasty and arrived hot. Bottom line it's expensive but you can't put a price on quality.

Food is top notch with large servings and great price.

Did not know this restaurant existed, got a tip from friends and they were right, awesome food, big portions, and friendly staff, highly recommend

Reading the reviews, I have to wonder what happened to this place. Ordered yesterday, I might as well of thrown my $50. on the street. Absolutely gross. The curry chicken had zero flavor, it was watery boiled chicken breast. The Cantonese chow mien had zero flavor again with mushy soggy noodles. If you want good food call Golden Dragon down the street it's 100% better.

Wow! Absolutely delicious. We tried the food here for the very first time and were blown away. The two standouts were the Super Snow dish and the Plaza Beef. The Super Snow Dish was a delight to "build" before eating and the Plaza Beef was melt in your mouth tender and both were delicious. I wish I would have known about this restaurant a lot sooner. Because of Covid, the restaurant is takeout only, but that's totally ok. It just means that you will enjoy this awesome food in the comfort of your own home. We will be back!

Many dishes have changed for the worse. My grandma was very disappointed, but she doesn't know how to write a review herself. As my first time trying I agree, low-quality food.

Not much for décor or ambience that's for sure. Maybe I got lucky but the lemon chicken and vegetables were as good as I have tasted in Chinese restaurants. Not a great dining experience and take out might be a better option.

Absolutely the worst food experience in years! Dry ribs all tasteless batter and no meat. Shrimp can ares in more tasteless batter! Over priced zero value a real letdown from previous years! If you want to waste your money order from here!

Used to go here 15 years ago and it rocked. Now it is horrible. Very sub par food and not cheap for what you get. Very disappointed.

While I was maybe nostalgic there are many better options in the area.

This is what all westernized chinese food should taste like. Who cares if portions are smaller, it's like that in all quality restaurants where they give a proper sized serving of quality food instead of a large serving of crappy food.

We don't eat her eoften, we're out of the delivery zone so when we do order from here it's an added $20 delivery charge. No big deal, we just take that into account and use Plaza as a special treat.

Love, love , love the Plaza. I will drive cross town for the plaza. One of the best offerings Elwood has to offer. You can't beat the prices on the lunch menu. If you do go, just don't sit at the table next to the bathroom.

Oh, the Plaza. This is one of my favourite restaurants that holds a special place in my heart. It was my grandfather's favourite restaurant for 30+ years and every Christmas eve when my mom was growing up, he would take my grandma and their 4 kids there for dinner. When my grandpa passed away, I started joining my mom, grandma and aunts for Christmas Eve dinner. They love the Szechuan beef and the Lemon Chicken. We all LOVE the Mooshie pancakes...I get the tofu version with thin little strips of crunchy fried tofu in with buttery and savory bean sprouts while the rest of the family eats the pork. Often I get cravings for those mooshie pancakes, but try to hold off until next Christmas to keep it special. The place is always packed, the service is always fast and, if not friendly, totally accurate and precise. It looks like a bit of a hole in the wall, but it seems that the best ones always do!

Quite possibly the best Chinese food in the city. Four of us went to the Plaza on Friday night at 8:15pm and were sat immediately and greeted in nearly as quick a fashion. We ordered spring rolls, beef fried rice, lemon chicken, curry shrimp, honey garlic veal, and sweet and sour chicken balls. The food all came out at nearly the same time which was a lovely treat considering the timing of most Chinese restaurants. It was ALL delicious!

Without going into too much detail, all the sauces were light and delicious without being overpowering, all the meat was cooker perfectly (the shrimp was divine), the sauces were used with moderation so the dish wasn't swimming but also was present enough that the flavour shone through. The honey garlic veal and the lemon chicken were, by far, the stars of the show. If any of you go, get at least one of them! You will not go wrong. They were crispy, not greasy at all, and so flavourful.

(One tip: the curry shrimp, which was delicious, was swimming in green peppers and onion. If you are not a fan of green pepper, unfortunately like myself, you will not get full value for this dish. The shrimp are so good but not quite worth $11.25 for 10 shrimp.)

After seeing what Brian had to say about the take out containers I wanted to see for myself (no offense, Brian, I love your reviews, it's just my natural curiosity). I found that they did have larger ones, in which they packaged much of a dish of fried rice. They do have the smaller ones but I'm not sure why they would use those. We did get a much bigger, white, disposable take out container. Perhaps they had run out at the time previously.

Anyway, for all of the dishes (5 plus appetizer) it came to approximately $75 with tip averaging $18.75 per person as we had four. Now, we certainly ordered too much for us so we could have let up on one dish, but even so, I felt my $18.75 served me well. Two of my dining companions were of the opinion that they would not like Chinese food and they loved it so if for no other reason, come to the Plaza! The food is light, delicious, and well priced. What more could you ask for? I will absolutely go back!!

9/10 Enjoy!!

DON'T LOOSE A GOOD THING!!!!!. We have been regulars at The Plaza for more years than I can remember. We were there just a few weeks ago and I have to say that the food, although still tasty, the quality of the meat and other items is beginning to go downhill. The previous owners never used inferior ingredients in their recipes and if the new owners do not adhere to the same standards this restaurant WILL lose a lot of long time customers. Going there tonight with family, and depending on food quality it may be our last.

The best chinese in Winnipeg. Been going there for 26 years and it's still the best. portions are good, family of 5 and we have 5 dishes and leftovers which are awesome the next day!!
Keep up the great work!!

Agree with the comments about consistency, price and take out size. However, we were introduced to this restaurant from very good friends and I still value the taste and quality of the food. Yes, possibly a premium experience but the food is tasty.

Food okay but pricey. The food isn't terrible but as a result of the small dish sizes and $10.00 per container price, my expectations were not met. The dishes contained far too many bean spouts and bok-choy. When I order a noodle or tofu dish, I hope that those items are plentiful, not outnumbered by the "filler."

Awesome Chinease food. I have been ordering here for ten years and nothing compares to this restaurant. The food never disappoints it is always good and the people are very nice. You get 10% off for cash orders which is awesome. We have never had a bad experience form this place which is amazing and I highly recommend this place .

Smallest dishes ever served!. Having eaten at many asian restaurants in Winnipeg the plaza has the smallest entree portions, although the flavours were decent, the quantity given was very poor, for this reason alone the value for your money is not given. In which case i would not return or recommend.

Was afraid takeout portion would be small based in comments, but was not disappointed. Great portions and in agreement, good quality food with no scrimping on the good stuff. Will definitely come back!

Awesome food, inconsistant portion sizes.. The food here is fantastic. Always made with quality ingredients, and never chintzy with the meat. I have eaten at most of the higher rated Chinese Restaurants in the city, and I know for certain that Plaza is by far the best

If you're ordering for more than one person however, it can be pricey for the amount you get. I find that five menu items usually ends up costing about 65-70$, with delivery and tax.

One of the things I ordered last time was the 'Garlic Shrimp', which tasted great, but came with a measly six medium size shrimp, it was served in a container that my Iguana could confortably wear as a hat, and cost something like 12 dollars.

Even if served in-house, as a side, I would have been disappointed in the portion size.

On the other hand their Chop Suey is quite good, and comes in a gigantic container, that could easily feed two people. Ironically, this only costs about eight dollars, but it came with more shrimp then the afformentioned shrimp dish.

Oh, and Dharma, suck my danglies you nasty witch. I literally can not fit half of my fist in that container.

If you have some extra cash laying a around, ordering from Plaza is a great way to treat yourself. On the other hand, if you're looking for a meal that won't put a black hole in your wallet, try somewhere else.

I find myself always comparing other Chinese food restaurants to Plaza.. My favourite items on the menu are Kung Pao chicken and Cantonese chowmein. The exterior is ghetto, but don't let it stop you from trying it. There is a reason they have been in business for so long. Can't think of anything off of the menu that wasn't delicious.

Awesome Place. I've been going here for 20 years. Amazingly consistent always varying between very good and mind blowing. The spring rolls are fantastic and the dry szechwan beef is an ultimate finger food - like a chinese version of nachos. Other menu highlights: Hot Honeyed Chicken, Pan Roasted Shrimp in Garlic (tons of garlic), Plaza Fried Rice, Plaza Beef.... actually I've never had anything there that wasn't good.

Fantastic chinese, well run restaurant, packaged well for takeout

More than what you ordered..... I went to pick up my order - as I was waiting at the counter - I looked over and saw an employee picking up fried rice OFF THE FLOOR that he had dumped and putting it into a take-out container. My mouth dropped open with a horrified look on my face and another employee quickly shuffled him into the back with the fried rice.

HE WAS PICKING UP FOOD OFF THE FLOOR PEOPLE. So along with your fried rice, you may also get dirt and who knows what else.

I almost phoned the Health Food Inspector - but couldn't be bothered I will just NEVER order from there again.

Excellent!. I live nearby and have been ordering from Plaza for near 20 years. The food, and staff, have always been awesome. I've eaten at many other Chinese restaurants in town but this is still my favorite.

Order incorrect and no apology from Plaza. When I explained that the order was incorrect, the restaurant was insistent, 4 times that I provided the wrong menu # and item description. There was no apology from the restaurant, or how can we accomodate you. So, I will never eat there again.

Don't judge this restaurant by its exterior. Despite the rundown appearance of the exterior this diminutive restaurant boasts big flavors. Upon a friends recommendations we ordered the Szechuan beef (dry), Szechuan chicken, deep fried squid with spicy salt, and shrimp chow mien (ordered extra spicy). Although lacking heat, the Szechuan beef (dry) was flavorful and crispy and paired well with the the crispy shrimp chow mien. The sauce that the Szechuan chicken came in was a bit sweet for my palate but the meat was surprisingly moist and overall the dish was delicious nonetheless. The shrimp chow mien was not as greasy as anticipated and did contain the extra heat that was requested. The noodles were crispy but like many similar dishes at other Chinese restaurants the vegetables were plentiful but the shrimp were few and far between. The deep fried squid with spicy salt was tasty but a slight letdown compared to its equivalents at other Chinese restaurants in Winnipeg. The batter used with the squid was quite thick and can be likened to that often used with the fish in fish and chips dishes. In comparison to other similar restaurants, the portion sizes were smaller but these 4 dishes did manage to satisfy a party of 4. In a similar comparison, the prices are also slightly below average making for an affordable meal.

Overall the meal was pleasant and I can recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a cost-effective or late-night bite.

Perhaps staying in to eat at this restaurant is a different experience, but as far as take-out goes, I have two words of advice: don't bother.

We take a drive,,,. I was introduced to this restaurant when i started dating my boyfriend as he lived just a short walk away. It was the best Chinese restaurant i've found since the one my family went to when i was little

They have the BEST Dry Szechuan beef i have found. We have since moved from the short walk to the restaurant and we now drive from St. James just to enjoy the Plaza's food.

After 35 years of the shanghai I hoped the plaza may be the answer. Sorry but not even close. Very disappointed. I realize it's a different type of Chinese food but the plaza chow Mein had no flavour, the sweet & sour chicken balls were on par with mall food court fare. The prices were not reasonable but I suppose I was spoiled by the shanghai, 2 people, 5 dishes $75. I would hope to have plenty to take home and at least get another meal out of it. Not so. Overall mediocore food at a premium price.

Amazing!. This was our first visit to the Plaza Restaurant and we were very happy to discover this hidden gem just a short distance away. The restaurant itself is very clean, the service was very professional and helpful and the food was amazing. We especially enjoyed the Fried Meat Dumplings. Thanks again Urban Spoon!!!!

Sczechuan Heaven. My family has been going to the Plaza for almost 20 years. The food is exceptional. Signature dishes include Dry Sczechuan Beef, Shrimp in Brown Sauce, Chicken in Hot Pickle Sauce. The pan fried dumplings are also to die for. I will never tire of going to the Plaza. The atmosphere is nothing special, but the food and friendly staff make up for it. 5 out of 5 stars.

Best in town. The best chineese food I ever had... and the staff are very nice too...

Best restaurant ever. Don't be fooled by the small unattractive building!
