Review Deen's Restaurant - Winnipeg

marco landaverde
Great restaurant. Family owned. Got the goat Roti and my friend got the boneless chicken. Great service, attentive and fast. Great value for the amount of food. Clean place and the patio looks awesome. I’m sure even better at night.

Very good food, friendly staff. Will go back for sure.

We were visiting from out of town and went wild or lunch at Deans. We had doubles, Jamaican Pattie’s, chicken and goat roti. The food was excellent. The goat roti was next level delicious and my only regret is I will need to wait until I return to Winnipeg to have it again.

Food was good. Service was friendly. I'm not an expert on Caribbean food. I didn't order the roti which I think is more their specialty?. Had the jerk chicken and the goat and rice. The entrees include greens which isn't mentioned in the menu. The jerk was better here than at other places I've tried. I'm not a huge fan of jerk normally but it was ok here. (My friend wanted it) Will have to come back to get a better review. I had been here years ago when I did all the restaurants in the back of the ciao magazine.

Very yummy! The jerk chicken and rice were our absolute favourite tonight, but all the dishes were amazing a delivered a good kick. Fast, great value & delicious!

Homemade and delicious! Deen's Doubles are a true delight! Also, Deen's Favorite Roti is loaded with big chunks of juicy curry chicken and big tender shrimps, yum! Fresh cut fries are so crispy and soft at the same time. Love this place!!

Absolutely amazing food and great service. The menu is authentic Caribbean and the food is bursting with flavors. A hidden gem. Tried Jamaican patties and Jerk Chicken. I have to say that these were better than the ones I have had in Jamaica. Good parking spots across the street. Ample free parking. It's a must try in Winnipeg. The patio seems very nice, could not try due to rainy weather.

A taste of the Caribbean! We went for lunch today after been there over 10 years ago, and everything was delicious. Both the jerk chicken n rice and the chicken roti were flavorful and filling. Service was friendly and quick and the washrooms were clean. Definitely a must try! Again and again...

This is the place for Roti and Doubles in Winnipeg. Never disappointed at Deen's. The place could use some TLC interior wise, but the current look is also part of its charm! If you haven't gone to Deen's you should.

Used to be my favourite. Not very good anymore. Won't be back. The roti was flavourless The roti she'll did not have ground chick pea flour.

Used to come here as a kid all the time however since the new owner took over
This place has went down hill
Rotis are not made properly they are thin and more like a wrap , doubles are small and do not taste authentic.
Go to tropikis or bindys for real caribbean food made properly.
Was very disappointed!!! With this place
I came here today for the second time in two weeks, I had the chicken Roti and it was amazing, so fresh you can tell they make them by hand with love and pride. I also had the pineapple soda which was an excellent companion to the Roti. I believe this to be another hidden gem in St.Boniface. Support local business. I also ran into Orlando from Orlando's tailoring from down the street, which is always fun.

The Swizzles Styx have been coming to this place once per summer for as long as I can remember. It's a very different type of place and we usually enjoy the curry chicken with chickpeas and share some doubles. We have a couple of Red Stripes, hang out on the patio and it's always been a nice time. The service, however, has never been exceptional. So this summer we showed up and the place is locked up! They weren't closed for business or anything, just didn't bother showing up on time to open up for lunch that particular day so we headed elsewhere. Not sure we'll be back.

Hellooooo?. Trying to call Deen's on Friday of the Sept. Long weekend...4x.....no answer.. It says they are open ...huh?!

Good Food but they never answer their phone. Hard to order food ahead of time when they don't answer their phone called 3x this week during business hours

Not surprised. When we visited Deen's the owner's son was "working" in the dining room. The entire time we were there he sat at a table near the front playing on his laptop. Why would he interrupt his playtime to answer the phone and take care of his family's business? This restaurant has gone straight downhill since Deen decided to sell, much to the chagrin of long term customers forced to search out a new favourite "home" to dine at.

-----14 Mar, 2014-----

BIG disappointment :-(. Wife and I stopped here for lunch the other day. I ordered the "daily special" as described in the menu. Jerk chicken, rice & salad. This had to be THE mildest jerk chicken ever, I am convinced the rice was straight out of an Uncle Ben's box and the salad ..... really ????? 3 tiny slices of tomato and a bit of shredded lettuce but not a single drop of dressing ... NONE !! Are you kidding me when you call that a salad. My wife's shrimp roti ???? I've seen 1/8" sheets of plywood that were thicker than her $15 roti. Do these people not realize that there are several restaurants in Wpg. serving roti these days? Have they never heard of Famena's or Tropikis etc.? Time to step outta your kitchen and see what else is available and then get back in the game. C'mon guys !!

Great jerk chicken. I'm not a fan of rotis as I find them too heavy but I do love jerk chicken. None of the places here in winnipeg seem to make a spicy jerk chicken so you'll have to ask for hot sauce on the side. Anyhow, amazing deal with the daily jerk chicken special that includes rice and salad for $7.95. It's fall off the bone chicken (you get a drumstick and thigh) with a great medley of Caribbean spices. mmmmmm so good.....great price and very delicious food. The salad comes with the usual Kraft pre-made dressing so nothing special there but the rice is really good as it's well seasoned and complements the chicken perfectly. I also suggest getting some doubles as an appy to start.

Service is really friendly and the decor is okay though getting a bit run down.

In the summer, they have great live music in the patio.

@ The Socca Reggae Festival. I loved the Jerk Chicken and Rice I had along with the Meat Patty. Their little outdoor set up was full or nearly full the entire afternoon I was there. the chicken was perfectly moist, the seasoning made my mouth water (I was afraid it would be to salty or have to much heat, but neither happened) The thigh, drumstick and fairly large portion of rice was enough to stuff me. I am going to visit the restaurant sometime and see what else they have to offer. The Meat Patty was moist inside and flaky on the outside. To die for.
Enjoy!

Never Disappointed. We are attending a gathering for a couple of birthdays. We have been going there for years and I can't believe the reviews that have been posted. I will be very aware of the complaints that people have posted, but we've never had a problem with the food or service. I plan to post further review.

Cheap eats but no service. I went with two friends after hearing some positive reviews from others, but I was very disappointed with the whole experience. The restaurant itself was unclean and the service was non-existent. There was only us and another group of 4. Our server gave us our drinks and took our order, and after the dishes were served, disappeared and we had to wait at the til for a few minutes before being able to pay for our meals. As for the food itself, while the prices were good, the food was average at best.

Old Regular. I used to pop by Deen's a few times a week, would always try a different combination of rice dish and roti. But I must say that the beef/veg and rice is out of this world. As with Deen's Roti, with chicken, shrimp and potatoe, is to die for. Big fan of the curry here. Also, try the Chicken on fries: delicious!

?????. Aw! What happened?!?! This is not the Deen's I remember! I took a friend who'd never been and spent the whole day telling her how amazing it was going to be. I hadn't been in a couple of years and was so excited to get my fix. Imagine how embarassed I was when she unfolded her roti and it revealed some sad, overcooked frozen veggie mix. Mine was so bland I had to add SALT (of all things!) and even the hot sauce couldn't fix it. They're so friendly and nice you don't want to complain but it really isn't what it used to be years ago. So disappointing.

5/5. This place is amazing. Everyone should go there! Excellent owner and customer service. Everything on the menu tastes amazing! I go there all the time!

I haven't eaten here for a very long time and will not be back. I ordered two doubles and a chicken roti. The doubles lacked flavor and the tiny chick peas there in were hard and chalky. The roti shell was thick and hard tasting like a cheap Safeway burrito shell. The chicken inside was quite dry. I think they expect you to pay extra for some chick peas in your roti. I thought this was standard. There was also a sauce provided that was so salty it was inedible. The cashier was extremely friendly and provided great service though.

This is one of my favorite hidden gems in the city. The food portions are huge for a really good price. Everytime i go i end up staying just for more. Highly recommend!!!

Faded glory. I have been going to Deen's for over 20 years. I know that during that time ownership has changed at least once, probably twice. Returned for a visit yesterday and it really struck me how far the place has sunk from it's glory days. When we came in the place was staffed by one uninterested waitress who was obviously doing the food "preparation" as well. Had doubles (as always) and the texture was mushy and the only flavour seemed to come from the hot sauce I had to drench it with. Then had the Jerk Chicken. Chicken was OK, but obviously microwaved (as were my doubles earlier) served with iceburg lettuce and hard tomatoes and some rice that tasted like Uncle Ben's microwave version. On my last visit I had a Roti that was OK but not exceptional. Just too bad that the place is a shadow of what it once was.

So good. I love this show place. It serves up yummy and cheap doubles, beef patties, roti. My fave is the curry chicken served with rice or the curry shrimp. Servers are awesome and the cook knows what they are doing. You wont be disappointed.

Mediocre at best.. Deen's used to be good.. but everything there has gone downhill lately. The roti's are smaller, no side salads anymore, they changed the hot sause, and the general hospitality leaves something to be desired.

I came here for doubles and a roti the other day. The food is pretty good, not great. I think I prefer the roti at the forks. But I've been coming here with my parents since I was really little. That's the kind of place Deen's is for me, and I'll keep coming back.
Samcro
Mediocre & bland. Doubles were ok. Beef Roti was bland and short on beef; where's the curry and other spices???? I won't return. Famema's on Garry is far, far superior, regardless of the $2 price delta. Server was very nice but the cook was sitting right beside me and didn't even acknowledge my presence? For such a small and intimate restaurant you think he'd engage a customer...whatever.

This used to be a great little restaurant, but they appear to have lost interest in making good food. Let's start with their flagship app. "the Deen's Double" small and chewy. Chick peas bad too. Then on we move to the chicken roti. Store bought corn tortillas singed on the grill. Tough and dry. The filling was OK, but with them cheaping out it makes you wonder what else is going on. The Solo Sorrel drink was also something dissapointing. It tasted like cream soda not the Sorrel I remember. Can't recommend it any more and we won't be back in the future unless something changes.

I like the doubles and the chicken roti (although they are full of potatoes and sometimes you get a bone) but I have not ordered from here for over a year but have been going here since I was a kid. We like the carribean place at the forks too.

What the heck happened??. Been going here for over 12 years. Have not been the past two. The food was REALLY bad. The curry taste of nothing and looked like brown water. The doubles were the size of a a silver dollar and hard and chewy from the microwave I am sure. Don't get me started on the chickpeas on the doubles- wow- can you say canned and not tasty. I have to agree the service is very good and friendly- other than that don't eat the food. I noticed a table of East Indian people who all left their doubles as well. This place used to be so good:( Try the doubles at Tropikis-yummy.Service not as good but food is much better. happy eats.

Deens Pretty good. The curry is pretty mild. The overall food quality is decent though. But still, weak curry at a Caribbean restaurant? The curry is kind of the backbone. Why pander to weekend warriors when you can get a clientele base who is there for authenticity?
Fuur
Cute and tasty. Perfect roti, and LOVE the doubles. great family who owns it too.

Loved the food and the atmosphere. Small place nice people and great jamaican food. Will come back for sure

HOT sauce, bland curry.. I tried the Deen's Doubles and Deen's Special Roti with chicken, shrimp & potato. The doubles were simply fried tough pieces of dough topped with a chickpea curry... I liked my roti better. It was filled with lots of meat & shrimp but just like the curry on the doubles it was rather bland. It tasted just like a generic bottled blend curry powder. The meal was saved however with the house hot sauce which I have to say is very HOT so a little goes a long way ! The outdoor patio which hosts bands on the weekend holds a certain appeal so I probably will go back to check that out one day before summer's end.

Went back recently- glad I did!. Used to go to Deen's Diner quite frequently and for some reason haven't been back in years. Went recently for lunch and had a roti and doubles and loved both. The meat in the roti was tender- unlike other rotis I have had recently at other restaurants which had tough meat (totally unacceptable in a roti). Appreciated the friendly, fast service and affordable prices- will definitely not wait so long to go back next time.

Deen's 1977. I was there at Deen's around 1977, had a good time, I believe Deen is back in Trinidad, my brothers and I had a good time, some good memories. The music may have changed, but deen's quality food remains the same.

Disappointing. Deen's was hyped up to me for so long, and when I decided to try it I was excited to experience what everyone was talking about. The price was right, but I found everything quite bland. When I added the hot sauce I pretty much killed any taste buds that were picking anything up in the first place. The clientele were sketchy and obnoxious and the server was too caught up feeding into their highjinks to be attentive at all. Won't be going back anytime soon.
Brian
Good, good, good. Roti and doubles....it doesn't get any better than that!
Lori
A Winnipeg Tradition. Summer weekends @ Deen's offers live entertainment on the Patio. Famous for their doubles, this is the menu item everyone must try.

Being in a new area of town continues to introduce me to new dining opportunities. There are several within about half a dozen blocks of St. Philip's on Marion alone. One of the more intriguing ones for me is Deen's Caribbean Restaurant & Patio.
