Review Umi Sushi - Winnipeg

Michelle Lejano
My fiancé and I are very picky when we go eat out for sushi. However, when we went to this cute little restaurant the ambience was excellent, they served high quality fresh sushi, and the service was great. It’s a must try if you’re a sushi lover! You will not be disappointed.

Menu has changed, so if you came here prior you’ll notice this. Some of the really good rolls are no longer there! Little higher than average prices. Staff was friendly. Space was clean. Got served moldy beer, but restaurant did not charge and was very apologetic. Seating is upstairs. Not overly large.

Nice atmosphere, staff, and DELICIOUS FOOD 🤤🤤🍣🍣 Highly recommend their tempura/deep fried sushi 👌🏻🙆🏻‍♀️👌🏻 Ice cream for dessert 🍨 ❣️❣️

Great little spot! We were very happy with the service and food was excellent. Yakisoba noodles, shrimp tempura and a teriyaki chicken roll for the kids and the small $50 sushi boat for the parents! Did not disappoint, great value for the quality of food and really hit the spot. My 10 year old daughter said it was the best sushi she’s ever had! Well done Umi!

Not really worth the price. Ordered a small platter priced at 42$. There was only one roll with fish. The taste is okay but there are better choices for platters at better prices. Highly recommend sushi edoichi's platter, large pieces of sushi rolls that you can choose for the same price. In comparison umi was disappointing.

Would not recommend, when there are many better sushi options around. They forgot one of my rolls, and had it delivered but it took 1 extra hour. They did not apologize or compensate anything, which I found to be very poor customer service. I will not be coming back.

You will be paying top dollar for one of Winnipeg highest quality sushi here. Beautiful ambiance, presentation and service were most excellent. Will definitely be back for more.

Do not go there. This is me leaving the store after sitting for not more than an hour. Ordered sea food pancake, calamari, miso soup, spider roll and japchae. Told them million times please make sure there’s no meat. We don’t eat meat like beef, pork, chicken. We even asked the server to write it down vegetarian japchae which is fried potato glass noodles. We were eating then discovered bits of beef pieces. Asked the server what this was and the server immediately took it away and said the chef made a mistake. How can a restaurant take this carelessly? Imagine if someone with certain food allergies comes in and tells them please don’t put this and they “accidentally” put it in. One simple sorry will not be solved for everything. The chef needs to learn to not make mistake when dealing with food. You are working in a restaurant, if something happens to customer it will come down to you. There are many restaurants with less staff and can manage better. I don’t RECOMMEND ANYONE TO GO THIS PLACE.

Good food at a great price....staff was very friendly and inside was pleasantly surprising

Great service. All the reviews below were very long ago. I assumed and had second thoughts about going to Umi Sushi, but after my friends told me it was a great place, I decided to try it out. The service was amazing, the food arrived on time. Many sushi places in Winnipeg fail to meet their expectations with sushi, but I believe Umi has high quality food and service. I would recommend anybody to come and try their amazing rolls. Personally, Dynamite was my favorite. Their shrimp is cooked to perfection and it always brings me delight and joy when i eat here!
Food Addict!
Great service, great food! Its fresh and real sushi from restaurants are incomparable to cold sushi from sobeys. Music is good, cant wait to try it again
Michelle
Gone here for lunch and got the lunch special. We had the spicy Salmon, spicy tuna, California and dynamite rolls. The sushi was very dry. Thank goodness it came with miso soup to help wash it down. The rolls werent cut evenly, so there were big rolls and small ones. Ton of rice and not much fish. I don't think I'll ever come back. The service was good though. Very friendly.

Didn’t feel like cooking and wanted to order take out. This is the first time I’ve ever done sushi takeout. More often than not, I find the presentation pretty lacking and things like Tempura just don’t survive takeout very well. Nevertheless, my family wanted sushi so we decided to hit up Umi as we eat there every now and then for dine-in.

Ordering was simple enough, menu is online and also available through Skip-The-Dishes delivery. After phoning the order in, pick up was available as promised and the process was prompt.

The maki rolls as usual were great! I really like Umi’s California roll as they don’t try to skimp like other places and sneak in any shredded cucumber. Same thing with their Goma Ai Roll, it is purely spinach tossed in a sesame dressing, no cucumber which can dilute the flavour.

The Tempura, was as expected. Not that it is Umi’s fault, Tempura simply doesn’t survive sitting in a takeout box. The specialty rolls tasted great, but things like the Firecracker Roll or Umi Special Roll look way better when presented properly.

Unfortunately, the salmon sashimi was a pretty big miss. There were a few fish scales found throughout the pieces. Worse, there was one piece with a bone in it. This is unacceptable! One is paying an extreme premium for sashimi. The expectation is that you should be provided with a premium cut, with a premium level of service applied to it.

Sushi at Umi is very tasty and they have coupons in the Show and Save. There’s definitely no shortage of sushi restaurants in the area, but you can’t go wrong with Umi.

Nice sushi place in a busy Kenaston strip mall across the Home Depot and Walmart. My go to place if I'm craving for sushi and California rolls-fresh and tasty. Friendly owner and service.

Always been a fave in winnipeg! Used to live in linden woods so we frequented here regularly.
It's the easiest quick sushi good size and reasonable sushi!

I am not much of a sushi eater, but my son LOVES IT. he always goes there with friends and we even over some to take home. I even got some for a party and everyone really enjoyed it. Great service I have to say.

This is our go to sushi spot for girls night out. We were there again Saturday evening . The service is fantastic and the food never disappoints ! I ordered the shiitake mushroom, fried California, dynamite, Philadelphia, tempura yam and tempura salmon rolls. It was way too much food so I ended up taking half home (still great the day after). The rolls are reasonably priced and freshly made . I'm not a sushi pro but this place is by far my favourite and I will continue to come back !

Ordered on Skip the Dishes for pickup approx 90 mins after order was placed. When we got the food it was clear it had been prepared immediately and then sat on the counter waiting to be picked up. Fish wasn't cold anymore, tempura was soggy, and rice was dry and firm. Someone from Skip called the restaurant and they refused to offer any compensation because the order was placed on Skip, even though if you go to the Umi site, they direct you to Skip for online orders! Had been here a few times before and it was quite good but they will not be seeing another nickel of mine.

Even though I had a bad experience a couple of years ago, I gave another try and I was so impressed by their freshness of salmon and other sashimi. The owner had newly changed and I got sushi pizza and a roll for compliments when I ordered quite a bit for group of people. I'll definitely order again 👍

I had the teriyaki chicken and shrimp tempura. When they took my order, they said it would be ready in 15 minutes. I returned from shopping at that time, and it was waiting for me. It was comparable to other sushi places. I noticed that they have a seating area upstairs, so I may try that out one of these days. Service was friendly with plenty of smiles. I'll definitely be back.

Horrible service. Upon arrival, an Asian girl greeted and told us we could head upstairs to seat ourselves. We were greeted by a Caucasian girl who said we could sit at a particular table and she would be right with us. We waited for 10 to 15 minutes without a menu, without request for drinks, utensils not a single thing. 5 minutes into waiting a couple arrives after us whom were seated and our waitress gives them menus and asks them what beverages they wanted. We overhead the couple mentioning they knew the owner.....we could wait no longer so we decided to have dinner at Asoyama and we received extremely prompt courteous service. The overall atmosphere at Aoyama was much much more serene and enjoyable so we made a good decision to leave Umi Sushi. In the amount of time we waited at Umi Sushi for menus, we got our first dishes with tea. Winnipeg has countless sushi restaurants Don't tolerate poor service when there's another sushi restaurant a block away. We will not be dining at umi sushi ever again!!

Used to eat at this restaurant all the time and I finally went back today. Got their negi toro roll to go and I have never seen such stingy portions of tuna in a roll in my life, it was pathetic. Thanks for the rice and seaweed! Wont be going back
Carnivore
Let me preface this by saying that I have loved and enjoyed Umi Sushi for many years, both food and service... but after today I honestly don't think I'll be back again.

My boyfriend and I were seated and we were the only people in the restaurant, so when the waitress took an extremely long time ignoring us to come take our order because she was very loudly and animatedly chatting away with her coworker we were quite annoyed. We waited a good 10 minutes easily for her to come back and the whole time we could hear her talking loudly behind the curtain.

The miso soup was not hot at all, it was barely warm. The sushi rolls did not taste fresh today. The rice tasted stale and the avocado in one of our rolls was actually mostly a grey-ish colour. I didn't have a piece of that one but my boyfriend said the avocado did not taste very good.

When the waitress asked how everything was we exchanged a hesitant glance and said "It's okay I guess..." and she just said "Great!" and walked away, I don't think she was really paying attention because our body language and tone of voice were pretty clear that we were about to transition into a complaint about the decline in quality, but she just walked away so we didn't have the opportunity.

Then when we were finished the meal it again took her some time to come out and realize we were done... we were the only people in the damn restaurant, it wouldn't have been hard to keep an eye on our table.

I have never had an experience like this at Umi before, I have been eating here for years and I hope it was just an off day, but we left disappointed and feeling like we had just wasted $50 so I think that's it for me.

This used to be our absolute favourite sushi place. The one visit we found a large fly in the soya sauce. There is no way it could have gotten in there through the pour spout as the hole was much too small compared to the fly. They comped our meal, but we haven't recovered from the experience and haven't been back.

Service is ALWAYS amazing when we go! Food is great! The Bento Box lunch is a great price for all the food you get! One of the best and underrated Sushi restaurants in town!
Tlcgems
Something's changed. We used to order there once a week for years. We have since moved out of the area and decided to pick up sushi from there this evening. We were so disappointed when we got home and saw the smallest rolls I've ever seen! They were 1/2 the size they normally are. In addition the spicy tuna was so fishy I had one piece and didn't have another......the other rolls were barely adequate. Not sure what's changed but hopefully they get back on track for the people in the area. We will not be going back.
Kalamalka98
Not good. Sushi rice was soggy and not fresh and salmon tasted old and slightly bad. Even the shrimp in the tempura tasted like ti had been sitting out for awhile
Tdts
Awesome. Went for lunch and it was the best sushi i have had in Winnipeg. The sashimi :) yum!
D
Not very good. Friendly service, but slow. Rolls did not look or taste fresh. Would not go back.

Good!. Went on a Friday night and enjoyed it. We had various maki rolls, which were good, but the real show-stopper was the salmon tower, which was just perfect with its warm rice, cold crab and salmon, and wasabi dressing! The food didn't arrive as quickly as I like but the wait was nothing outrageous. Also, their tea is super yummy (a roasted rice blend) and less than a dollar, which is great for this thrifty Winnipegger.

Great food at a good price!. I've thoroughly enjoyed the tempura udon many times as well as the lunch specials/boxes. The lunch specials are a great deal for how much food you get.
Mmmmfood
I've had better sushi in a food court.. Probably the worst sushi/Japanese food experience of my life. It baffles me that anyone can just open a restaurant with very little understanding of the cuisine that is their "specialty". Tuna sashimi was not fresh, so they try to mask it with LEMONS. Japanese ceviche? Sushi chefs spend years crafting their art. Not this guy. I ordered 2 orders of tuna. 1 order was cut normally, the other one was bastardized and cut in half in order to get the "8 pieces" per order.
Tempura yams should be battered with tempura batter not a thick layer of panko. They made an effort to give us 2 bags (1 hot, 1 cold you would presume) Nope. They placed the sushi in the same bag and on top of the hot food.
Normally I would not call to complain, but I did. When I spoke to the girl she was of no help and actually started to laugh.
I have never written a review for a restaurant before, but i would truly hate to see anyone waste their hard earned money.
Craig Mensforth
Service was quick but quality of the sushi was in consistent. As a previous review indicated some fish was not fresh and was inedible. The prices were on the higher end for sushi which wouldn't be a problem if the quality was there. I won't be returning.
Food Lover
So disappointing! The service was absolutely terrible, the portions were small and the taste was similar to what you can get at sobeys. The restaurant it's self at first glance was nicely decorated but when you started to look around it was dirty. Not sure when they washed the walls last. All around terrible.
Shabnamb_19
Too pricey , poor quality. Poor service!! The price is very unreasonable for what they are serving. All the wraps taste the same. very disappointed.

Great Sushi. I like the set-up of this restaurant. We have had a great experience at Umi. I had ordered take-out and when I picked up my food, they gave us a free dish which was very nice of them. I had also asked for extra ginger in which they gave me quite a bit!

Our friend had stomach problems after eating sushi there two night ago. Fish wasn't fresh. Just wanted to share this
Urban_princess1
Awesome food.. My husband and I found this place by accident while shopping before Christmas. Every single roll we ordered was amazing! Very tasty, fresh & flavorful. The atmosphere is very romantic. Service is great, prices are reasonable. Will be back again!
Tiki Mamma
Fantastic every time!!! I have been here many times and not once have I had bad food. Staff is always great they always give my 2 year old free juice with his meals!!! Food comes out fast and is yummy. Las Vegas roll is amazing and their tempera shrimp till!!!
Giulianagrande
Delicious and inexpensive. My fave sushi place ever. Always fast and always beautiful
Dina
Sushi rolls are tiny, bland. Service was poor. At the end of our dinner was provided with one mint. I guess it was meant to share? Will never return.

I've been here a few times. The last two times I've noticed the rice getting stale and crunchy. The tipping point came when my friends tempura salmon was hard as a rock and had been obviously over cooked or sitting out for hours/days. This type of sloppy attention to the meal has made me not take my business there anymore. God speed to their future business, nice atmosphere and nice staff.

Love it. I tried Umi Sushi one day when myself and a co-worker were having cravings. The staff are absolutely amazing! Very friendly, very nice, very fun people. The sushi is good quality and decently priced. I've gone back a few times since and it's always been good.

The four of us just stopped in for a quick snack. The staff were very friendly. We ordered a total of 8 rolls and three drinks (juices for the kids plus a Coke). When they brought the drinks they told us they were on the house! And they brought a free Sunomono salad as well! The rolls were beautiful and delicious. They've modernized their menu - very attractive design with great photos. Lots of new options to try out. We'll be back for sure.

Service was fast but it was expensive for what you get
Asian Persuasion
Very unsatisfying. Ordered 3 rainbow rolls and wasn't made properly. Also forgot to put in 2-3 orders. And waited about 30-45 min for food to come in.

I just ate a worst spicy tuna n salmon roll in my life ......;( Feel do sad...

Quality Sushi. Another one of those restaurants where you get what you pay for. In this case, Umi have the nicest hand rolls and thier sushi is delicious. The plate that the chef prepared for us, when brought out was an absolute work of art. A bit more $$ than your average sushi experience, but definitely worth it.
Gemma
Always busy but worth it!. Have been here often and always find the staff very friendly and the food really good!

My go-to sushi restaurant. I like to try new sushi restaurants, but this is always the one I come back to!
I've been going here for 5 years, and I have never been disappointed.

Atmosphere: 8/10
I love that walking up the stairs takes you to a cozy dining area. I think they changed some of the decor in recent years, but I do still like it.

Food: 9/10
Love it. I've tried the majority of the menu, and everything tastes good. It's decently priced, and the lunch box is totally worth it.

Service: 8/10
I like that there's a little button that lets them know when you're in need of assistance. The waitresses are friendly and courteous.

I would definitely recommend this place!

Great little sushi place. If you haven't tried Umi Sushi, you're really missing out! This restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and yummy sushi, the price is also cheaper compared to other places. When I ate there last, the menu was updated, adding a bunch of new rolls! I really recommend getting the Phoenix roll, or the spicy winnipeg, they are soooo good!
Vegetarian
Meh. The atmosphere was quaint, the waitress was very warm and friendly, and it was a pretty packed lunch. My standards were quite high after reading some of the reviews on here, as well as reviews from a couple of co-workers. We didn't order the lunch special, as it wasn't really anything special: 2 veggie rolls with either soup or a pop for $8. We decided to order the veggie spring roll, miso soup, and four veggie rolls. The selection of veggie rolls was quite limited, and they were all very basic rolls. The soup was great, but had very little tofu (mine only had 2 little pieces). The spring rolls were the best part of the meal, hands down. The rolls were... ok. If you're vegetarian, try Ninki Sushi on Corydon. They have a much wider vegetarian selection. When we were finished, we waited a considerable amount of time before the waitress came by because she was by herself and the restaurant was packed. Overall, meh. Not worth the high raves it's getting from other reviewers.
Dessert Sinsations Staff
Disappointing. Service wasn't bad, although the server was inattentive. The sushi was substandard; I expected better quality (I went to the one in whyte ridge, I am not reviewing both locations). Definitely not worth the price, I won't be back.
Leahtards
Loooove it!. A friend introduced me to umi a few months ago and have been going back ever since! the staff is very friendly, and the layout of the restaurant is pretty neat. the "phoenix roll" is to die for - massive portion and absolutely delicious! definitely worth checking out!

Great Sushi!. I've been to Umi Sushi (on Kenaston) a couple of times now and I've loved it every single time! good service, a cozy environment, and GREAT food! I've heard that their owner has changed but I didn't notice any difference from when I first went a couple years back. They've recently added new items on their menu and I've only had a chance to try a few of them but they all taste good. One of my favorites is their new mango roll (Yum!). I can't wait to try their other new food.
NR
Good sushi bad service. I went to Umi Sushi for the first time last week. The menu was extensive and offered options for people who may not like sushi or the idea of raw items. They also offer some non-sushi entrees. The food is priced on par with most sushi places, with the more elaborate rolls topping out at $15. People who have any kind of physical disability or problem with stairs should note that dining was all on the second floor, which is up a flight of stairs immediately to the right of the front entrance. The rolls were a good size, everything was fresh and extremely tasty. Unfortunately service is lacking. Our waitress brought us the menu and drinks and failed to return so we actually had to walk the order back down the stairs where she was chatting with a friend. Our food came quickly, once the order was received, but again when waiting to pay we had to finally walk down the stairs to track someone down. There were only two other sets of diners in the restaurant at the time, so the lack of service was not acceptable. The sushi however was good enough to go back for.

Nice location. I've been here on several occasions and love it every time. When I started going there, I would be the only one in the place, but now when I go at lunch, there's usually a line out the door. It can actually be hard to get a table if you don't go early.

The atmosphere is rather neat. You have to walk up a bunch of stairs to get to your seat, and the colors in the dining room are very modern earth-tones. Makes for an enjoyable and relaxing place. It IS rather cramped up there though as they try to fit several tables into a very small space.

The service is usually alright when there aren't many in there, but when the place is packed, watch out! I once sat in there at the lunch hour and waited 45 minutes to get my food only to have them tell me that they had sent it out for takeout rather than serve it to us! That was the only time it was ever poor though, and they have the standard button on the table if you need to ring for service.

The food is GREAT. The portions are just right for maki rolls, everything is delicious, the yam tempura rolls are absolutely wonderful and very tasty. When you go, definitely think about ordering a noodle dish to go with your sushi, but be warned that the portions are unexpectedly huge! After all the rolls come and you're thinking to yourself "how can I ever finish all of this?", out comes a massive plate of noodles, meat, vegetables...

The biggest attraction to this place if you're not wowed by the food, is the price. Every time I go, someone makes the comment: "This has one of the best tasting sushi at the best price!", and that statement is true in my eyes as well. Best tasting sushi for the best price. There are some great sushi places in town but you always end up paying so much that you can't afford to go back for a few months. With this place, it's affordable enough to have a weekly Friday lunch with friends if you wanted.

I was impressed. Apart from that one instance of bad service, the place has never been disappointing and I have it on my top sushi places to visit.
Scott
We waited an hour for our food to come and no one even came by to check in on us. Wish I could say the food was worth the wait...
KANA
Quality has gone downhill... I've been to Umi a few times and the last few times have been disappointing. The quality of the sushi in the underground mall location is good -- quick cheap sushi bento is always win. But the south end location has gone down hill.. it used to be better. The service was alright and the sushi was disappointing IMO. Probably won't go back to the south end location.

Umi Sushi is the best sushi restaurant in Winnipeg, the food is filling and very tasty. whenever a mistake has been made on my order the staff at Umi have always mended the problem with an extra complimentary roll. In general the staff at Umi are very welcoming and friendly
Rina10
One of the best sush restaurants in wpg. Reasonably priced and very delicious.
Alice
Decent sushi, bad service
Diner
I " liked" this with a caveat. This has been a regular sushi go to for us. Decent sushi rolls ( not sashimi) for reasonable prices. But lately they continually have a hard time with ensuring our take out orders are complete and the last time everything tasted really fishy. We will likely go back hoping it's better because we love the convenience of this could be gem. Also if they read this, it would be great if you could replace the carpet.
Monica Hunt
Wpg square umi sushi. Great sushi! i go here about once or twice a month in wpg square to grab a $10.00 sushi/drink combo. friendly staff, good menu. have never had a bad meal here.
Io
Umi. Cozy little restaurant, decent sushi at a decent price.
PrudentDiner
Overrated in my opinion. Ordered the Rainbow roll, fish on top was chewy, most of inner roll made of avacado (where's the crab?). Spicy tuna had tuna blended into hot sauce to skimp on tuna. Other rolls decent for price, fair amount of sushi in rolls, medium sized, and a fair selection. Most rolls $4.95 for 6pc. There are better and cheaper places than this.
Merix
What a brilliant little gem of a restraunt. Nestled between the source and payless shoes, this small delightful place was recommended to me by a good friend. They have earned my business for life with their quick service, well priced and more importantly DELICIOUS sushi. For a real first time experience try their dynamite roll, bakudan, teriyaki chicken, spider roll, or California. SUPERB place, I go there so much now they know me by name.
Chewie
Umi sushi is the bomb!! The rolls are huge. I love the nigiri. The menu says two pieces but they always give me three. The prices are reasonable and the service is awesome.
Leslie Phung
This place is small but the food is really good. Good price for the amount they serve. Rainbow roll is their best.
