Review Sunshine Chinese Restaurant - Winnipeg

Marg Johnson
We have ordered Chinese food from many places in the city, however this place is the very best and we will never order from anywhere else! Their service is so friendly and they always have a few minutes to chat when we pick up our order. You may find their prices to be a little bit higher than other places in the area, but when you see the size of dishes that you get, you will see that it is totally worth it!! Thank you so much for many amazing dinners and we continue to look forward to many more to come (this weekend particularly for my birthday & Mothers Day)!!

Wish I could give zero stars! Other than the overly salty chicken fried rice the rest was completely inedible, ended up in my garbage! Garlic spareribs gray and rubbery, in garlic flavored water sauce, the steamed pork buns full of grizzle and fat no actual meat, and the Chinese greens was just bok choy again in garlic flavored water and so chewy that had to be spat out as could not eat it unless you swallowed it whole! What an overpriced 100% rip off!

One of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in Winnipeg if not the whole of Canada. I have lived in China for a bit in most of the cities from the north to the south and this restaurant reminds me of the aroma emanating from the restaurants in China. The part owner Ms. Ling was very attentive and provided options that would help us make good choices. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who craves Authentic Chinese food. Don't worry too much about the decor and setup. The Ginger beef is probably one of the best, although I would recommend that if you order it, ask them to tone down on the sweetness.

I have ordered from here many times now. The food is amazing every time! Their wonton soup is so good on a cold day. They also have a variety of snacks that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. Highly recommend this place. The staff is also great to talk to and very friendly. They always recommend different dishes to try.

Placed an order for pickup and waited a very long time for my order. The food was very good, but the prices per dish are extremely expensive with only average sized portions. That was the deal breaker for me.

Amazing prices for the portion sizes. Delicious food, best veal in the city and the veggies in the chow mein are bright and cooked nicely

Delicious and consistent! We love ordering from here and will continue to!

Best Chinese restaurant in the city, in my opinion. They have great food, cute décor, and the staff are extremely friendly. I have a lot of fun memories dining here. I'd recommend trying something from their traditional menu at least once. The thick noodles with beef and black pepper is my go to dish.

This place confuses me because some of the dishes are SO good, but others are SO bad! Like almost inedible! Do not order the chow mien!! The battered shrimp was also too doughy. I ordered one of their house special chicken dishes and was very underwhelmed, it was basically breaded chicken smothered in sweet & sour sauce.

However!!! The ginger beef is AMAZING!!!! Also, if you order on skip you can make the dishes spicy. Highly recommend the curry vermicelli, extra spicy. If you do get the ginger beef, ask for honey garlic sauce to dip them in. It's a surprisingly good combination.

We love the owner/manager, who is always friendly and informative. Good restaurant. I LOVE the hot and sour soup, and I've ordered several of the shrimp dishes, which are excellent. EDIT: one criticism is that they don't cook their vegetables enough. Raw onions as the only side for a dish makes for an unpleasant experience. Still love the ambiance and the owner, though. And my remarks on the hot and sour soup still stand.

Having eaten lunch here before and enjoying the food it was quite the surprise to order takeout that was almost inedible.

The noodles were mush, the sauces were tasteless and the chicken in their dishes tasted like old stewing hen. It was tough and stringy in some pieces, yet overly tenderized in others so that the texture was almost mush. That, and the consistent lack of flavour was the common theme throughout each dish.

Portions were large, but that doesn't matter when it almost all went in the trash.

This is one of my favorite places in the city. The ambiance is friendly and clean and there is always plenty of comfortable seating. The staff is very friendly and attentive to us as regulars, but to newcomers as well. The deluxe wonton soup is absolutely fantastic, as is their spicy noodles. Definitely one of the best spots to get food downtown!

We always get to go orders from here. I love their lemon chicken, but their Chow Mien was bland. They have good portions for the price. They just need to update their prices here in Zomato.

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Winnipeg. Family-run, care for quality and service, great tastes and portions, reasonable prices for what you get. My favorities are cantonese chow mein, brisket and tofu and ground pork and egg plant. The latter are from traditional menu and take a bit longer to prepare. So you may want to phone these orders in.

Amazing little place in the heart of Corydon. Appropriately named as dining room 'sunshiny' with bright colors and window wall looking onto street, ideal for people watching. Welcomed graciously upon arrival and was able to choose seating preference. Server was happy to make food recommendations based on likes/dislikes. Sampled several new dishes and boy, were they good!! The breaded veal is to die for, tender yet crispy. Had the supreme (not sure its name) stir fried rice with pork, chicken and shrimp~ all generously proportioned. It was moist and delicious. Beef in black bean sauce with noodles was also amazing, sitting on a bed of crispy peppers, bean sprouts and onions. My husbands favorite dish was one I hadn't conceived of ever trying but was so delighted that I did~ giant prawns, shell on. They are lightly breaded, deep fried and salted and the shell is easy to eat~ crunchy, yet easy to break down. Good calcium injection there! Met the owner's~ Ling (our gracious host) and even her husband, who came out from the kitchen as we wanted to meet the chef of our delicious meal. All in all, thoroughly enjoyed this little restaurant and will be bringing friends and family whenever Chinese food is craved. Great service, great ambiance and superb food. Thanks Sunshine, till we meet again!!

My first time visiting and it was a great experience. Reasonable prices on great food with large portions. Also really liked their secluded patio in the back

First, ask for the Chinese menu (which is in Chinese and English). They have excellent and authentic Northern Chinese food. The basic menu is standard American-Chinese restaurant food (lemon chicken, etc.) which I didn't try. The three dishes we ate were terrific--tons of flavor, authentic, and huge servings. They have a busy catering business to local Chinese events. I'll be back.

This is a fantastic Chinese food restaurant. Must-orders include their succulent breaded veal, tender and crispy; pad sew with beef in black bean sauce. Those are both unbelievable and very tasty. Service is wonderful, they provide recommendations based on what you feel like and what you are craving. They also can suggest authentic dishes that may not be on the menu but are in season. Excellent place for Chinese food!

Not a very good experience, there are many better choices for Chinese food nearby. Expensive as well. The food was too salty, too breaded, and the vegetables in the dishes were mostly onion.

This place is amazing! This is my new favorite!
I can't think of anything bad to say or that I want to change..The food is amazing, generous portions, and very friendly and accommodating staff.
They can accommodate allergies and things like gluten free diet as well.

Great lunch specials and a huge variety of dishes including some really cool traditional items. Veggies, shrimp, and meat pieces that are always very fresh and nice big pieces. A+++

The best Hot and Sour Soup you will ever have! Very large portions. And if you get her to pick some dishes from their Chinese menu, you will be pleasantly surprised. They had this Eggplant dish... Wow!

Tried this place out on a whim recently, was pleasantly surprised. Staff was attentive and friendly, and the food came out really fast.

I'm not normally a Chinese food guy, but this reminded me how good it can be. My gauge for the Chinese food is the chicken balls: sometimes you end up with a morsel of chicken in a sea of batter. Not so with Sunshine. You order a chicken ball, you're getting a chicken ball with a nice layer of batter. It was that way with everything I had. The chicken fried rice, for instance, has huge chunks of chicken. I walk by this place often, and I can't believe they're not busier. Definitely recommend.

Outstanding!
Ya know, I've never bothered to review anything before. This place just opened, and we figured we'd give it a shot. Wow.
Order was ready for pickup in 15 minutes. Every single thing was fantastic. The Singapore style vermicelli had lots of shrimp, the chicken balls were great, the spicy Thai vegetables were delicious, and oh my god, the honey garlic shrimp! The honey garlic sauce was unreal. Also, the egg rolls are the best I've had in Winnipeg to date.
Eight thumbs up.
