Review Kai Ping Restaurant - Winnipeg

Great service ordering. Food arrived fast and without delivery charge due to proximity. The food was hot and absolutely delicious! Fussy here with meat with Chinese food usually but it was a 10/10. It’s now our go to. Highly recommend. Friendly fair fast and fabulous! Seriously I recommend.

Why won't you fry my dumplings? The food here is very good, though it changes quality a bit from order to order. My main complaint? Every time I order fried dumplings, my favorite dish, they come steamed. I state the menu number and ask for fried very specifically. But I get steamed.

If I could give zero stars I would. I have been ordering from Kai Ping for 9 years, and have never experienced something like this before. We received a $100+ order and multiple items had hair in them, in addition to the sauces having a metallic flavour. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with the restaurant only to be accused of lying and offered a refund for a fraction of the amount paid. I agreed to the refund, but later got a call to say that the manager would not approve a refund and nothing could be done. We will not be back.

I ordered mapo tofu and it tasted and looked more like beef stew. There was little to no chili oil to be found. I find it unbelievable that this restaurant passes itself as chinese as this tasted more like chef boyardee. Sesame chicken was also soggy and feels like its mostly breading. Given the stark shift in ratings from past years to recent times, it looks like the new management has opted to sacrifice quality for quantity. I urge anyone to AVOID this establishment. If youre an employee/manager reading this, do better.

Undercooked vegetables. Food in no way resembles photos on website menu. It was largely constituted by breading. Gave 2 fortune cookies for 4 dishes so kids could fight about it. I wouldn't go there to pick up a free meal

If I could have given a zero for review I would have. This was the absolute worst Chinese food I have ever ordered. If you notice I say ordered, the reason being was of the 4 dishes and spring rolls that we ordered, only the spring rolls were eaten. The spring rolls were not that great but we were very hungry and tried our best but couldn’t get beyond the spring rolls. We ordered salt and spicy ribs they brought us squid, sorry couldn’t eat even if we had ordered this. The squid was like rubber and no flavour or spice. Next we ordered kungpa chicken which definitely wasn’t chicken, not sure what it was but texture of rubber and again no flavour and a big pile of peanuts in corner of dish. Ordered shanghai chowmein, rubber noodles and nothing else in dish, no veggies, no spices. If there was at least some flavour maybe I could have chewed on the noodles for awhile but awful. The breaded shrimp was close other than all the bread crumbs falling off shrimp sitting at bottom of dish. The rice was dry and hard so I couldn’t even eat this. I have never in all years of ordering Chinese food had such bad food that I couldn’t eat anything. I am in shock of how this place had such high ratings.

This used to be our favorite Chinese restaraunt, but the last two times we've ordered, the quality has really gone downhill. I'm wondering if the ownership has changed in the last year.

Ordered some food yesterday and while waiting outside for my pickup kitchen staff were coming and going without masks on. When I tried to cancel the order, the person on the phone tried to tell me I went to the wrong restaurant and then hung up on me. The food here is good, but I don't feel comfortable ordering food from a place that doesn't wear masks.

Excellent meal. The lady answering the telephone is clear, knows the menu and very pleasant. We ordered first time and had the wontons with sweet and sour sauce and were very surprised that the wontons had pork meat, and it was so tasty. Also ordered ginger beef, delux noodles and black bean and garlic shrimps. All items were very plentiful on portion size and price was reasonable. Not salty, no huge tastes of msg. Will definately orde again. We have found our new place with great Chinese food. The delivery guy was very nice too. All good. Meal was hot on delivery.

We decided to give Kai Ping a try. We are easily pleased when it comes to Chinese food. We ordered Kung Pao Chicken, Curry Beef Fried Rice, Beef Ho Fan, and Mapo Tofu. To our surprise, nothing tasted the way it was supposed to. It wasn't bad - but it definitely wasn't "good" either. I suppose people who aren't familiar with real Chinese food would like it. The Kung pao chicken had no kick to it and was weirdly sour. The chicken was flavourless and the peanuts were soggy. It should be called "Sour Peanut Chicken" instead. The beef ho fan was dry (barely any sauce) and the noodles were all clumped together. The Mapo tofu tasted like "ginger tofu and veggies", it wasn't the signature bright red colour, no kick, not flavourful (missing fermented bean paste / chilli oil / shaoxing wine). The owner asked for 50 cents per disposable fork while the cook was wearing a sleeveless shirt in the kitchen... Hopefully they were just having an off day and they are normally as good as other reviewers say. We won't be back to found out.

My original post was 5.0, but have had to change it since I realized the 5 times I ate at this place I would always be sick the next morning.
So not sure what they are doing, but it isn't good.

The best Chinese take out anywhere. We've never had a bad fish from here. Always fresh. Always hot. Always great flavour. Try the Szechuan chicken in peanut sauce.

Hands down the best Chinese in Winnipeg. Love it. Have been ordering from them for over 15 years. Love everything on the menu. Order early on weekends and holidays as they book up fast.

Unsure of what's being called chicken but it's not chicken.. Be weary of what your putting in your mouths that's being touted as chicken, but I can tell you it's not chicken, I have an eye witness who walked through the kitchen and saw what was not chickens being cut up... but if you like that sort of thing... Enjoy!

Ok food really rude owner. The owner is not friendly and was not very nice to the staff members from what I saw tonight. The food was ok I was not impressed with the chicken balls bearly any meat in them and super greasy. Looking for a better place to take out.

Love it!!!. Kai Ping is the only place I will order chinese food from. Everything is always fresh and delicious! I've tried many many other places and they have always been a disappointment. I know good food and Kai Ping is great food. Yum!!!!!

Disappointed x 2. I have never been motivated to write a review but I felt I had to say something. I have tried Kai Ping twice and both times the food was terrible. With all the rave reviews I gave it a second chance as I consider myself to be a food connoisseur but it was the same both times: greasy, and very little depth of flavor. I will not return!

Our go-to Chinese takeout.. We love this restaurant. The food is consistently good. We are becoming repeat customers.

LOVE THIS PLACE! If you haven't tried Kai Ping, You are missing out!. This place is the best Chinese Food Restaurant in the city by far. Order it at least once a weekend. The food is great! A lot of great gluten free options. The Staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful in suggesting different dishes. Try this place! You wont regret it!

Bland. Tried this place a few weeks ago and absolutely hated it. Everything we tried lacked flavor, from the chicken balls to the deluxe wonton soup. Will not be ordering from here again.

Worst food in years. Wow, haven't eaten here in the last year or so and wasn't to impressed then. Thinking that I would give it another try, bad idea. Food was awful. Portions we fair, ingredients seemed fresh but bland and over cooked. I always say I will give a restaurant 3 tries looks like I'm done. Way better food out there.

Gross Take Out. Recently decided to give this place a try because I'm new to the area and it seemed to have a good rating on urbanspoon. The food was really disappointing I had their special low mein it was flavourless with extremely tough dry pieces of chicken. My egg foo young was unbearably salty and pretty much inedible. Spring rolls were also flavourless and really greasy. I will not be returning I'm really hoping to find some decent Chinese in the river heights area.

I love this place! I often stop by here on my way home after my weekend late night shifts. While the customer service can be hit and miss(its usually only one person working the front all day) I've never really had a problem with the food. My veggies ate always crisp and savory, my noodles are never mushy and my wontons are never soggy. I usually order my food low salt as the only real problem I have is its often too salty. I also find that they use a lot of chicken in their multi meat dishes like the special lo mein or the special fried rice. Other than that I love this place!

So annoyed. The food from Kai Ping is...okay. Though most delivery chinese is just okay, but the service is terrible. I placed an order and the woman taking it could barely hear me because the kitchen was so loud. It took ten minutes for her to take my order and credit card number. Then when the food arrived, no chopsticks! Who orders chinese and doesn't want chopsticks?? When I called, she simply told me that they were 25 cents each and you had to ask for them when you ordered. This is the stupidest policy i've ever heard. Even if you want to charge for chopsticks, which is ludicrous, you need to inform the customer when they order that they aren't included and ask if they want them. Now I'm bringing chinese to my friend's place without chopsticks, how embarrassing! I won't ever order from her again! The food is no where near worth the annoyance I got from the experience!!!

Quality has gone downhill here. I have been a loyal customer of Kai Ping for years, ever since I was in grade school and my dad would buy it for us as we lived down the street. The last time we ordered was in December - it was a good meal that time.

We ordered for pick-up two days ago and were very disappointed with the quality of the food. I ordered the chicken in garlic black bean sauce and feel totally ripped off - the dish is basically only green pepper and carrots with some tiny, chewy bits of chicken in it. NOT even worth two bucks, let alone the $9 they charge for it. The chicken balls were ALL breading... with tiny, chewy bits of chicken in them. The honey garlic ribs were chewy and overcooked.

Definitely thinking it's time to find a new Chinese food place.

Great take out place

Disrespectful. I ordered Sunday afternoon around 3:30 for a 6:30 pickup. WELL! the 6:30 pick up turned into waiting half an hour (They obviously forgot!)
I understand mistakes happen, but their was no apology, just excuses. The very least they could of done would have been to apologize, and what they should of done is offer a discount. Even just 10% which would have been nothing, would of at least showed they care about their customers. It is very rude and disrespectful to treat your customers that way! Your time is definitely not more important than anyone else's. Shame on you! The worst part is the food was pretty good, but I won't support a business that is rude!

Too little too late. I'm in the neighbourhood and have been a customer for a couple of years. Their service and delivery has been going down hill for years. The food is ok, little bits of meat, way too many onions and carrots, not exceptional, but they always say you can have something delivered in three hours and pick up can be as long as one and a half. Where do you get service and good chinese food in Winnipeg?
Tbdavey
Tyler. After being on hold and then being told they won't be able to deliver food until 930 at night. I won't be giving them my business in the future......

Tried this for the first time...food was terrible...ordered mooshi ..didn't seem fresh and the hoisin sauce had no flavor. .crispy chicken was very chewy...threw most of it out..

Good food-rude customer service

Called two hours ago to place my order, when i called to ask where my order was they said that it cannot be delivered because it was too small. They never told me that when I placed the order. When I spoke to the boss she said call back another time I don't have time to deal with you. Overall this place has good food but terrible customer service skills. Get some manners!

Good Food - Rude Owner!. This is my neighborhood Chinese restaurant & I've not had problems before. Tonight I had a $40.00 order & when I got home some items were missing: steamed rice, plum sauce & xtra soy-sauce. (They only give 1 tiny packet per dish.)

When I spoke with the owner Lou (splg?) she commented I'd had the food for an hr & only now was realizing items were missing! I pointed out I'd not had the food that long, & found it rude that she even say that! (IMO, even if I called the next day, it shouldn't matter. What's missing is missing.)

They did send someone over with the missing items in a short amount of time. Food was really good, but I was in a bad mood after talking with such a rude owner.

Unlike other restaurants I go to they did not give an apology nor did they offer a discount or complimentry dish for a future order!

Disappointed. Based on the reviews on this site, we expected much more.
The lemon chicken was tough, the sauce was sweet without tartness. The spicy crispy beef was soggy and less than spicy. The broccoli with mixed vegetables in oyster sauce was watery and contained only 2 pieces of carrot and a few slices of onion. The Kung Pao Chicken lacked heat and flavor -- the worst Kung Pao dish I've experienced.
Won't return.

Absolutely Gross. We ordered from here and will not be a returning customer. The food was absolutely gross. The sauce in every dish was like water. They put so much onion and celery in every dish to make up for the lack of meat. Go to Hi.Ball, you will not be disappointed!!

Ordered for the first time a few days ago and I am hooked. Delivery came fast, hot, and delicious. Beef chow fan, eggplant with garlic black bean sauce, and the squid with spicy salt were all very tasty.
Ashley Jorden
Very bland and oily, the sweet n sour sauce tasted like just water and sugar, defiantly would not order again!

Has success hurt Kai Ping?. I have always loved this place.
The salty squid is fabulous. All the dishes fresh tasting and interesting.
But, lately it's very hard to order.
And I've noticed that there's an awful lot of onion and celery seemingly used as filler in some dishes.
If you're in the catchment area for delivery from 4 Seasons, I think you'll notice a big difference. And, no, I don't have any connection to 4 seasons. In fact we live too far; I only get it when we visit my brother!
Still appreciate Kai, but not as much as I used to.
Myself
Repeat customer. Wow I can't believe some of the reviews on this page. We have been getting our chinese food from here since they opened. THE OWNERS MAKE THIER DISHES FROM SCRATCH. This is obvious when they have their fridges full of fresh products. You see this when you sit and wait for your order( as the door to the kitchen is open). The cooks are continuously
going to the fridge to take out the ingredients they need for their dishes as people order them. Of all the dishes we have ordered we never had a dish that we disliked.
Furthermore, I know that during busy times (long weekends & Holidays) we are advised that we should order ahead of time to ensure we get our order at the desired time. Yes, it does get busy in there. They take orders as they come, 'first come first served' is what I have observed. They note the orders coming in to ensure that customers don't have to wait too long for their orders. Sometimes we have been told we have to wait for a bit and that is because orders were placed before ours. I like that honesty instead of being mislead and expecting our food at a certain time and it's not ready.
As for bad customer service, I find this hard to believe. Every time we are there we are greeted in a very polite manner. As we sit there and wait for our food the owner is very polite to other customers as they pick up their orders. I have yet to see her be rude to her customers, she is very accommodating to meet customers needs (allergies, people running late, people who phone and can't make up their mind as to what to order). I have observed this when she talks to them on the phone, when she greets them upon picking up their order. If you want fast food sitting in a vat, call the local Chinese food chain not this 'mom and pop' restaurant.
Snowday
Terrible customer service. Started calling at 4:30, line was busy for 1/2 hour. Finally placed order at 5 they said delivery was at 7:15 and pick up was 6:45. I think waiting two hours for delivery is too long for a restaurant that only does pick up and delivery. I suggested they tell customers before they order that the wait is 2 hours. The owner told me it was my responsibility to ask how long the wait would be. She was very defensive and argumentative. When I asked if there was any way I could pick up earlier they did it for 45 minutes.

When I picked up my order the owner immediately showed me the list of other orders they had and told me I was rude and making her other customers wait. and that they were a very busy restaurant and I should start phoning earlier.

I agree the food has gone down hill as well, the lemon chicken and the sweet and sour shrimp were over deep fried. The consomme was awful.

Expected a lot more. Ordered delivery; wasn't impressed. It's obvious they get their food from the same supplier as every other Chinese delivery place in Canada/USA. So all they do is dump it in a wok for 5 minutes to thaw and heat it.

The "Sweet and Sour Fillets of Pork" were miniscule pork hunks with a half inch of batter, served at a 1:4 ratio with green peppers and onions. All in all, about 2 oz of meat for $9.25. Not worth it, although the sauce was pretty good.

Loo mein was alright, but very bland. Everything in Combination Dinner 1 was bland also (egg roll, battered chicken pieces, a few veggies, and tons of fried rice). If they don't use MSG, they seriously need to start.

Oh, and all of their prices have gone up 25-50 cents since their menu was posted on here.

Things must have changed. We tried Kai Ping after reading all of the good reveiws and, after much anticipation, we were only to be disipointed....

The budhas delight was all bean sprouts with no veg (except for an easily countable 2 snow pea pods) and an overly sauced small clump of vermicelli.

The lemon chicken...was nothing but a deep fried and sliced chicken strip with an accompaniant of starched lemon juice and sugar. The lemon slice was a nice garnish though.

The spicy(?) peanut dumplings was by far the most disappointing dish. If you can imagine unidentifiable meat parcelled in wonton wraps swollen to disproportionate size by boiling water and then swabbed in a peanut sauce that better resembled efforts by the local boy scouts than cantonese cooks.

We ordered enough to have left-overs but sadly we will be throwing the entire order out. We're still on the hunt for good chinese take-out. The good news is that garbage day is tomorrow.

Phenomenal Chinese food. Best in town. Order early and often!

Wasn't "wowed" food was bland and cold. Maybe different when dining in but it arrived in 20mins. Won't order again. Very friendly and affordable though

Excellent. I've had Kai Ping a few times now. The food is fresh and not greasy. Service it personal, quick and friendly.
Foodie McYumster
Reliable and Tasty. If you don't know it's there, it's not the easiest place to find - but this tiny take-out and delivery only place is worth the hunt. The food is very good and no matter how busy they may be on a given night, there's a consistency in quality that you can rely on. I've been going there literally since the day they opened and we tripped over them - and they have a loyal repeat customer in me. It's to the point where Lily, the owner, knows better than I do what I might like to order if I feel like trying something new or changing things up.

Excellent!. We have ordered from Kai Ping many times over many years. This is by far the best chinese take out we have ever had in Winnipeg! The flavors are distinct & delicious.
The family that runs this restaurant is easy to communicate with. Some of out favorites are the Consumme Soup (classic),Hot & Sour Soup, The Mooshi, The Cantonese style Chow Mein, The Beef Chow Fan, Buddah's delight, Lemon chicken, Breaded Dry Veal, Chicken in Spicy Peanut sauce and Eggplant in Black Bean & Garlic Sauce. WE don't eat seafood or pork so I can't comment on those dishes. Everything we have tasted has always been delicious.
Stuka121
Popular. This place must be good. i called on new years day and after getting a busy signal 4 times i finally got someone, was put on hold, then informed there was a 2.5 hour wait for delivery. the woman on the phone said people placed orders 3 weeks in advance. ate somewhere else.
Jim Gibbons
Best Chinese in town!! Very fresh no MSG. DON'T order the deluxe won ton soup though. There are no won ton's, just soggy noodles and the broth has no flavor.

Update
Just tried the wonton soup again, sink water taste and mushy tiny wontons.
Dana_m_b
Excellent!. I've ordered from Kai Ping for a couple of years, and whether they are busy or slow, the food has been consistent and delicious. I have tried a few different Chinese restaurants in the neighbourhood, and this one BY FAR was the best. The staff is super friendly and professional, and very personable. The prices are great, especially for the great quality food you get. This is my favorite restaurant to order from. I highly recommend this place!
