Review Ha Long Bay Restaurant - Winnipeg

Best food in Winnipeg! It’s just too good to not be available in every town/city. Summer rolls are awesome. Food gets served fast, is hot, and taste like, “why did I even consider eating anywhere els.” I will be back and so should you.

It’s alright. We got the beef satay soup. Very oily and salty but decent flavor. Also had the “deluxe” vermicelli. It was OK. The noodles were thicker, not sure if they were a vermicelli. The spring rolls in the bowl weren’t great. Almost like store bought, oven cooked. The summer rolls however, we’re very good.

Food and service were very good. Decent prices. No checking for QR codes required.

We dined in there last night and the food was awesome. Veggies were on point. Tasty and so good. They have a good touch with their spicy pho. Parking is a bit of an issue but its alright and its worth it.

Great service . Spicy beef pho was amazing and move and spicy. Authentic and alterable considering portions. Definitely will visit again

Pretty good food but as for my experience with walk in take out.....come for the food, leave because of the service.

Ordered the Bun Bo Hue, which is the spicy beef noodle soup. It was nice and flavourful, with the perfect amount of heat. I was also surprised with the amount of meat included in the soup compared to other places. Staff was very friendly and prices were pretty good.

I just had #31 beef satay noodles and it’s delicious! Spicy but so yummy , I had rice rolls with that and I would drink the broth with it and it’s so yummy !

Food was delicious, fast and easy to order.   Food was piping hot on arrival, and so good!     I would highly recommend this restaurant!<br/>From the pictures you can see the whole menu, and the food I ordered.     I had the wonton soup, with 3 spring rolls, and for the main course I had the Chicken Chow Mein

First, we found chicken in our vegetarian dish.  Gross.. we pointed it out politely.  Guy brushed off like it was impossible.. "no no, different, different, no same!" then walked away.  Even though it was obviously chicken and we were eating a tofu dish along with 2 other vegetarian dishes..<br/><br/>Then we found more meat for a second time, a much bigger piece of chicken yet again! We pointed it out again.  Again, he denied it.<br/>"No no, no way, chef do different! No meat!"  <br/><br/>At this point, we were grossed out.. we dug through, finding more meat, and said that's it..we got up, left all our food, and started putting on our coats, assuming he would rush to our table to save the situation.  <br/><br/>Instead, he served everyone else before giving us any attention, even though we were obviously leaving abruptly, totally unimpressed, including a takeout order that wasn't ready yet...<br/><br/>Being an ex restaurant manager, I couldn't believe the delay nevermind straight out denials!  I took the plate of food to the front, showed him the chicken pieces clearly in the dish, and asked him how much money he wants.. <br/><br/>He still charged us and his excuse was he don't see too good.<br/><br/>So if you're a vegetarian, look out.. the food is decent and affordable but overall lack lustre; the ambiance is dull, outdated and cheap; and the service is short, unapologetic, unaccountable, and therefor overall terrible!  Go to Pho 1, Sukothai, even Pho Mama, and never have an issue.. but here, is just plain risky and disappointing in the event of a mistake, which is too probable for my liking.  Fair warning!

This place is out of this world! If it was actually out of this world I would have to construct a rocket ship to blast into the galaxy wherever Ha Long Bay was.... the wonton noodle soup and spicy satay chicken are life changing! Need to change your life for the better ? Eat here!

Never ever go this restaurant- total waste of money...the owner and staff are really weird and fighting with customers....Please don’t waste ur money .<br/>! Yuck food

It seems like their restaurant is family business which is good because the owners prepared foods well, the foods were cheaper than i expected and quality was better than i expected as well.

As a Vietnamese, it’s very disappointing to eat a rice dish with pork chop and eggs that was so horrible prepared, poorly done. The wonton was overcooked, it looked dark like it has been recook so many times. The pork chop was thin and has no flavour. Water tasted like plastic.

The second best deluxe vermicelli in the city! (Rivalled only by Than Huong on Sargent). Fast, cheap, delicious. And I've never had an issue finding parking. And so great that it's so close to the hospital for nurses and doctors to stop by for lunch! :)

Food is not bad but portion sizes need to be increased. Only come here if you're trying to feed yourself. It's a shame since it's 1 block away from where I live.

It's been a while, but I frequently come here with friends for lunch, and have never been disappointed.<br/><br/>Inexpensive, quick service, and knowledgeable staff. Would recommend! Gets very busy at lunch due to the high volume of hospital staff who are clearly "regulars", but the service still tends to be fairly quick.

Very good food overall. We do return every few months...However...One person. One cook there smokes like a chimney. It's a horrible crap shoot because you'll get a beautiful rice dish, and about five bites in, all you get is a rancid tobacco aftertaste that (unless you smoke) stays in your mouth for a day. Aside from the one cook that gets their dirty tobacco hands into the food, I would give this place a 4.5 with the value and taste of any of the food.

Great food. A very nice mom and pop shop. The staff is so friendly they treat you like their own family. I ordered the number 17 with summer rolls. The vermicelli noodles (17) was very good, it comes witha small bowl of fish sauce on the side that you add in the bowl. The summer rolls were very delicious expecially their homemade peanut sauce. I would recommend coming her as they have great food and cheap prices.

We always grab a 4 pack of their Summer Rolls with our order. Rice paper roll filled with vermicelli noodle (thicker noodle), lettuce, shredded carrot (nice subtle vinegary taste), sliced pork and shrimp. The peanut sauce served alongside is delicious and definitely makes the summer rolls taste that much better. <br/>The combination is what I usually order. My spouse usually gets the chow mein. <br/><br/>If you spend over a certain amount, you get free chicken fried rice. Not sure what it is... but this fried rice tastes fantastic. The flavor the texture everything works. I agree with some of the other reviews about some dishes being overloaded with onions, but we found dishes we enjoy and continue to order those same dishes. <br/><br/>Prices are reasonable, the combination and chow mein (large) = very generous portions. Regular size is an option as well. Also a generous portion for the price you pay. <br/><br/>Great little place.

Disappointment. Food not bad but cranky service is terrible. We felt so unwelcome. Felt like we were annoying the host just by being there.

Great food and very consistent. Family owned and clean. Great restaurant. Been going there for years....Whole menu is great. If you're going for lunch, you better get there early, it fills up fast.

Called an hour ago to confirm they could deliver to me at work tonight - was told yes, delivery guy here, what did I want? Said I'd call back, which I just did. Now I'm being told that there's no delivery guy tonight (despite the fact that I'd already confirmed there was). Pretty lousy 'customer service'.

Great food every time. I have not been there for dinner however the food is the same all day long, summer rolls and must twice a month with that peanuts sauce. Service always bang on and never a miss.

Definitely a good place, friendly staff, fresh & delicious food. Only reason id prob not go back is bc their vermicelli bowls are made w/ thick noodles which does in fact alter the taste of the dish. I havent asked them yet if i can substitute thin noodles so i may try that next time im in the area.

Delicious food. I came here with my friend a week ago because someone mentioned it to us. When we got there in the lunch hour on Wednesday it was totally packed with no tables. Although it was packed the waiters got us seated within 5 minutes. For appetizers we ordered summer rolls. It tasted deliciously and the peanut sauce was magnificent. Then we ordered the beef pho. When you eat this with a stuffed nose it will open up your nasals. Overall the place was an excellent experience and I am going again this week.

One of my favourite vietnamese restaurants. Easily said, I am always craving Ha Long Bay's food. I was introduced to them from my friend who raved about their summer rolls. You really have to become aware of the specialty items though so that you can truly experience their best dishes and what they're known for. I'm always having their Beef Satay soup and their daily combination number 2 (comes with a wonton soup to start and marinated charcoiled chicken skewers on rice, amazing!) the House special fried rice is the most flavourful in the city. I'm not sure if it's their daughter or not who sometimes works there but the young lady is friendly and helpful in telling you their best dishes.. simply put, what you made that extra trip for. Absolutely affordable.

My sister & I dined @ this restaurant tonight for the 1st time because of the 91% rating it received. It was empty but for one couple. As an appetizer we ordered the spring rolls & summer rolls. The spring rolls had an odd odour & the summer rolls were flavorless. Thank goodness for the peanut sauce. The beef dish contained a very cheap cut of meat & the pork mushroom dish was completely inedible . It just tasted Weird. We both agreed it was one of the worst Asian food we ever ate. We will not be returning. 0.5/5 rating.

This place isn't called ha long bay anymore. <br/><br/>I had the combination vermicelli special. It was terrible. One of the worse vermicelli I have ever had.

Terrible, terrible service! Was given a dirty serving bowl with leftover noodles in it and was ignored by the waitress twice as we tried to ask for a new bowl. When we were finally able to speak to her she instructed us to go up to the bar to speak to another worker. Extremely rude and unprofessional. The food isn't worth the poor customer service!!

Delicious meal. I got the .... Delicious meal. <br/>I got the combination special (number 17) and it was the absolute perfect ratio of vegetables to meat. I ate every last bit! <br/>And my boyfriends chicken satay soup smelled absolutely delicious and he loved it as well.

Awesome West End Viet!. All of my coworkers at U of M Bannatyne campus suggested this place on Notre Dame, just across from HSC. This place is packed from noon - 1 PM everyday, so I'd recommend going at 11:30 or 1. What a great place! Return customers attest to the fact that this is some well-priced, delicious Vietnamese food. I usually get the Summer Rolls (see picture), which come with the most delicious peanut sauce I've ever had! I also get the Combo bowl (see picture), and both together come to $11. The service is fast and always friendly, and the waitresses somehow memorize your "usual" after just a few visits! I'd highly recommend this place if you're in the neighborhood :)

How I love Ha Long Bay.... Everytime I come here, I struggle with whether to order the Combination house special or the Beef pho. It's a hard decision because both are so delectable. The restaurant itself isn't fancy, but it's clean and simple.<br/><br/>The Combination house special (vermicelli with BBQ pork, beef, spring rolls, vegetables) is served with a sweet red sauce that you drizzle over the noodles. There's a crunch from the vegetables and the spring rolls that complements the soft noodles and the tangy meat perfectly.<br/><br/>Then there's the Beef pho with several types of beef and broth that has probably been simmering all day. Yummy. It makes you feel healthy after eating the pho and you're full without feeling too full. On a cold winter day, it's like a hug.<br/><br/>The parking isn't too bad either. While there's no private lot, you can generally park in the front of the restaurant when it isn't rush hour. During rush hour, there is lots of parking on side streets.<br/><br/>The food here is pretty guilt-free too - nothing that feels too heavy.

Food used to be good here. Now there are way too many onions in every dish. I guess they are cheap. Don't waste your time. Other restaurants are better.

Great for a quick lunch. Really crowded at lunch time but the quick service allows for high turnover rates. I usually get combo #1, which is an assortment of their pork tidbits (sausage, ground, tiny spring roll, I think there were some chicken pieces as well) over vermicelli noodles, accompanied by a small dish of sweetened fish sauce (I just pour it all in). It's tasty, filling and great value for $. Pho is forgettable, but others have raved about the beef chow mein. Can't say anything about the other dishes, as I haven't tried them yet.

Been here for the past 2 years for almost once a month and food is very tasty! Servers are okay and plus they have bubble tea on their menu.

Wonderful Experience. The first time I visited and I had such a wonderful experience. The people were really nice. Servers were great. My stomach was full to the brim! I will definitely come back :D

Good food but...... I wish the staff or the owner would smile more. I love their food that I go there almost every week as I live next to it. A little smile and friendliness won't hurt! :D

Get soup!. My husband couldn't wait until I had my baby so he could go for his beef satay soup everyday here. And that is exactly what he did. I must say that I like the soup as well. Their consume broth is awesome with delicious cilantro in it. The broth is superb. (Their wontons are okay)Their salad rolls are also delicious. I like the lemongrass chicken. Inconsistent service but unbelieveable soup.

Mehh. It was raining earlier this evening and remembered this place. Since it's a Vietnamese restaurant and I've never had Pho, I thought I should try it for the first time. Pho was the only thing I ordered from the menu so I can't really say much about this place. The decor was okay, I like that it was open, just a big square with kind of high ceiling. The food on the other hand, I was disappointed about. The Pho didn't have a lot of taste, the only distinct flavours were that of scallions, culantro, and sausages. The broth was bland! I left unsatisfied.<br/>But then again, it was my very first Pho, I don't know if it's really done that way or theirs was just lacking flavor. I'll come back but will try something else from the menu.

Venerable lunch spot. This place gives every appearance of being a local favorite. It was packed when we arrived at 11:45 for a weekday lunch. Parking is an issue--it took some driving down side streets to find a place. The restaurant is utilitarian and a bit shabby, but no one was there because it was the hip place to be. We ordered summer rolls and the combination special. Summer rolls were fresh and dewy, but lacked mint and cilantro and the peanut sauce tasted jarred to me. The combination had glazed pork strips, sausage chunks, rice noodles and lettuce with nuoc cham to pour over. This dish also lacked herbs, and ended up tasting a little uninspired, but the meats were toothy. Mine cost $11 for two summer rolls and a medium combination, which seems to be about the going rate. There was a problem with the credit card machine and we stood in line over ten minutes waiting for staff to get the issue resolved, so maybe plan on paying with cash. I would have no issue eating here again, but I didn't love it.

THE Best. I love this place...never had a bad experiiece yet! We have been going here for a few yrs now--for supper & for lunch...my favorites are the summer rolls, those bbq stix & those combo plates that come with soup & egg rolls & an entree. The staff is friendly & helpful & the prices are excellent.

Best food in winnipeg Hands Down!. I first tried their food years ago, as in 10 plus years. Heck I have watched their kids grow up. And from the first forkfull, I was addicted. <br/>The combination is a rice vermicelli dish that is highly recommended for the first time visit. It will give you all kinds of great flavours. The spring rolls are always a hit, and so are the summer rolls. The price can't be beat, it's beyond affordable. And the portion sizes are great.<br/>Definitely try it out, you won't be sorry.

One of the best!. The BBQ pork fried rice here is amazing. The pho is delicious, but the broth has a slightly different flavour. Not necessarily good or bad, just different. Great wrap yourself salad rolls.

Good Value.... Had a quick lunch here and ordered the Chicken Lemongrass in Coconut Sauce $8.20. Bowl of steamed rice will set you back another $1.25. I was pleased to see the main ingredient of the dish was in fact tender chicken in a thick brownish sauce with onions and a few green peppers. Not sure I was getting the taste of coconut at all but the lemongrass was evident. Service was fast and friendly and a good portion of food was served. I'd go back again !

Wow. I went here with a co-worker a few weeks ago and have gone at least once a week since! The food is always fresh, and very very flavourful. The summer rolls are my new craving! The singapore noodles have some of everything in it and the ginger beef is amazing. I have yet to find a bad dish on the menu! A must try.

Diamond in the Rough. It was me, my friend Sean, his mom and my mom. We were planning on going to an unnamed restaurant when we found out they weren't open in the afternoon. We were pretty bummed out, but my mom and I have lived in the city for a while, and she knew of a place that was a few blocks away from where I grew up on Alverstone St. So we decide, what's the harm in going? Well we arrive at this place that I recognize from walking by it numerous times in the past, but never actually entering, and it is PACKED! I'm talking not a single seat available, and a line out the door. But that place sure knows how to turn tables because within 15 minutes we were seated, and this place isn't exactly spacious, so the 3 of us, (not including my mom) were having our doubts, but once we got out food it was a whole different story. I will say without a doubt that to this day, I have yet to try Asian food like that ANYWHERE. I feel gifted to know where such a wonder of Winnipeg is stashed away, so that if ever I want to hold something over my friend's heads, it's this diamond in the rough that we call, "Ha Long Bay."

Ha Long Bay was a major disappointment. Bland tasteless broth with borderline inedible beef make this one of the worst versions of pho I have come across in Winnipeg. I cannot help but wonder if this restaurants' popularity is solely a reflection of its location rather than its food. There are simply vastly superior Vietnamese options in Winnipeg (and in the extreme vicinity of Health Sciences Centre) and therefore I cannot, for whatever reason, recommend Ha Long Bay.
