I come here a lot.. sometimes for buffet..which is fabulous..and sometimes to have aloo pranthas with yogurt and tea(my favourite)..or rotis.
If your looking for authentic food from India this is the place. Small comfortable, "homey" restaurant.
Despite the lack in the interiors decor, the food is great. The paneer is my favourite dish. My preferred place to go for East Indian food. It's cheap and its vegetarian.
Cheapest restaurant to find in Winnipeg north end. Food is purely vegetarian and tastes good . Buffet is cheap and not bad at all . Tables and interior if the restaurant is not really good but besides that its good .
FANTASTIC! Delicious vegetarian dishes plus rice, chapati, salad, curd, a dessert item...what more could anyone want for $10?!
The assortment is always great with pulses and vegetables +/- paneer dishes!
I had some curry cravings and went there for the buffet. They had five different curries when I went there. Price is really good, they even include a free roti and desserts. I also bought some of their sweets, ones that look like funnel cake, fudge, and donuts. They look really yummy but tasted nothing like I expected but still very, very good! I'd definitely come back to grab more sweets.
Excellent vegetarian dishes and the samosas are really fantastic! Not as spicy as other Indian restaurants which is an advantage if you get heartburn. Vast array of delicious sweets.
A great experience! Friendly staff!. I'd heard that this restaurant had great samosas, so I popped in to pick some up. It's definately not a fancy restaurant, but the food speaks for itself. A dozen hot, tasty, well seasoned samosas for only $6! Quite the steal. They also had a large range of Indian sweets, and a small buffet. Will definately be back!
Tasty food, friendly staff. An Indian co-worker recommended this place to us - it's his go-to Indian spot when he's eating with his vegetarian parents.
Anyway, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
This place is a bit hard to find if you haven't been there before......it's tucked away in the corner of the strip mall....but the thing that got me is that in the same strip mall, there is a large venue with a big sign that says "Punjab Sweet House banquet center" or some such thing, which I initially walked up to, only to find it locked up tight. My wife is the observant one that noticed the real restaurant tucked over in the corner.
The food was tasty, with 6 or so choices in the buffet, plus rice, salad, yogurt, and a few pickles. They bring you fresh-made chipaties (sp?) throughout your meal. There's not a lot of English spoken here, but all of the staff were super friendly and eager to please.
It's not a fancy place. You go there to eat, not to 'dine'. Just have realistic expectations, and you'll be happy.
We also brought home a box of Indian sweets from their VAST selection of dessert items at the front of the store.
We'll definitely be back!
Vegetarian? Wow!!. We went twice before I realized that it was vegetarian. The richness of the food makes you think it has meat!
The food is very good but the buffet is usually lacking a few dishes. The rice pot is often empty, and the service is almost non existent. The problem is that there is very little english spoken here. Other than that, I like the place.
This is the BEST value of any restaurant in Winnipeg. A buffet for $7 is pretty rare.
Great Buffet and Desserts. I went to this restaurant with my family and had the buffet. All the dishes were hot and seemed fresh. Undoubtedly they were all delicious. The kids especially loved the spinach and naan. They had lassi to drink which was sweet, so they loved it.
For the price there is no point in complaining about the decor or service, both of which were good enough for me. Don't forget to get some desserts to take home, I doubt you'll have room to for them there after eating at the buffet.
Awesommmy Good - Authentic Taste. I love this place so much... the food has that true authentic mughlai / punjabi food flavour which is missing in other Indian restaurants. I cant get enough of this place.
Interiors.... not even close to being cool.... but who cares considering the price, choice of buffet & great taste.
Doesnt make me miss the food back home ...... Thank you :)
Food so delicious it's almost scary, and service that is borderline atrocious. Today I went in at 11:30, waited 30 minutes before they stocked the buffet, and then brought me nan bread after I ate my plate of food???
I come from a authentic Indian home, and my mom cooks only Indian food. I can honestly say, this place is great if you want the true touch of home cooked Indian food from the village!
Their desserts are great - but didn't have a great experience with their kneer. Wasn't mixed or even slow cooked.. Either way, love their samosas!!
Like mother makes it. This is a vegetarian restaurant.
Punjab Sweet House and Restaurant is the very definition of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Even in its strip mall, it' doesn't jump out at you. But the food is the most authentic Indian food I've found in Winnipeg. It's a burst of homemade in every bite. The buffet is small and can include dishes that are not traditionally Indian, like mushroom curry. But the dishes that are traditional are very well prepared. And the chapatti (flatbread) is scrumptious and included in the buffet.
Unfortunately, the serving staff speak Punjabi, with little sometimes no English. However, once you cross the language barrier it's fairly simple to get what you want. Also, the cash staff do speak English well enough to take phone-in orders.
Although I've only had the buffet here, the menu impresses a few a-la-carte dishes which can be ordered for dine-in or take out.
Wow.. The place takes unassuming to a whole new level. But what is lacks in ambiance it more then makes up in quality, taste and value for money. You cant beat the price for the small but delicious vegetarian buffet. The Lassi is also very good and the naan is wonderful and soft, glistening with ghee and oh so worth the $2.00. The promised sweets are also very, very good. The service is warm but communication may be difficult. If you have $10.00 in your pocket, go.
One of winnipeg's best restaurants. period.. "Don't bother making the trip out to Punjab Sweet House if you are after the "exotic" East Indian dining experience. You will not see the typical adornments of hookah pipes, tablas, or incense. Nor will you see a majority of non-Indian or non-Punjabi people eating there. More of a "professional kitchen" than a restaurant, it is much closer to what an eatery is like in India, in that the dining area is an extension of a veritable factory in the back. From the milk-intensive, luscious paneer (a type of unfermented vegetarian cheese), to a vast selection of stunning khoya, or sweets (hence the name), Punjab Sweet House has Winnipeg's East Indian population to impress, wholesaling grocers and restaurants throughout the city. Judging from the very steady flow of traffic of its take-out patrons, it is succeeding.
After dismissing rumours of an improbable $6.95 buffet (lunch and dinner), my colleague and I (a starving artist and student, respectively), sceptically endured the ropey Sunday bus ride to a grim industrial area bordering what is known as "the Maples." We found the tiny restaurant on the end of a nondescript strip mall, with two teenage boys wearing patkas (Sikh headdresses) playing road hockey in the snow just outside.
We were greeted by four smiling women sitting at a table, clad in jewel-coloured saris to our left, and a large glass fridge with a silvery rainbow of goodies to our right. The décor was sparse and clean, with five tables to choose from and one washroom to prep ourselves in for the ten-course feast. Another smiling woman emerged from the back with water for us, for which we didn’t have to ask. At almost the very moment we sat down with a bit of each entrée (six) from the bain-marie, she re-emerged with two steaming chapattis (whole-wheat flat breads), hot off the griddle, still glistening with ghee (clarified butter) to prove it.
Our very first bite was into the succulent slabs of tangy paneer, made fresh on-site. We were thrilled. Bathed in a velvety masala cream, the dish was the most generous we'd ever seen in terms of paneer content. Knowing it takes two litres of milk to make a medium-sized brick, we felt guilty the buffet was so inexpensive.
Other dishes in the buffet (also available as entrées, of which there are many others that range from $7.99 to $9.99) included the dal makhni, an exceptionally buttery, rich lentil dish; the channa masala curry, fragrant chick-peas stewed in onion, garlic and tomato, and the comforting green bean and potato subji, a delicate and complex dish cooked not a moment past its prime. The boondhi raita (yogurt with chick pea flour chips) provided a cool counter-balance that I admittedly had thirds of. All dishes had subtle layers or nuances, making them intriguingly distinctive, as is the joy of good Indian cuisine. My diabetic colleague then jealously watched me eat two helpings the most satisfying and simple rice pudding I have ever known.
During our nearly three-hour wait in the bitter cold for buses that weren’t running on a Sunday, we struggled to think of any other restaurant that would have been worth the suffering, and came up with none."
I have only great things to say about this resturant. I have been going there for the past 7 years and to this day haven't forgotten the very first time I went there. I stumbled in long ago as I was looking for a resturant to go to for lunch in the area, and loving Indian food I figured it would be a good choice. I was promptly greeted by Gertej who asked if it was my first time In his resturant to which I explained yes. He assured me I would love the lunch or it was on him. I took him up on the offer. The fresh chapatti that arrived at my table was incredible as we're all the dishes at the buffet. Since that day I have probably gone to Punjab Sweethouse close to 80 times over the past 7 years, my girlfriend and I even have a tradition where every Christmas morning we go there for breakfast and have been doing so for the past 4 years. If you are interested in true home cooking and really want something amazing go to Punjab Sweethouse I know you'll love it, I've taken everyone I know there even those who don't enjoy Indian to find they love it! P.S. the Shahi Paneer with rice covered in buttery lentils is my most favorite combo :)
Meatless Monday !. Came here tonight with my Little Sister for the buffet they serve everyday until 8pm.
Tonight on the buffet was a nice simple assortment of vegetarian dishes that included a Bitter Melon Curry, Paneer Masala, Spinach Curry, Creamy Lentil Dahl and a nice Chana Masala. There was also a green salad and raita.
When we walked in at 5pm we were the first ones in for dinner. There was no rice on the buffet at this time but within 2 minutes they had some fresh Basmati out for us. Each curry had a pleasing taste, mildly spiced yet flavourful. I have never had bitter melon before and I am sure it is not for everyone as it has a very distinct bitter taste.
Naan was made freshly for us and a second one was even offered which we accepted to soak up all the masala on our plates. The naan was also included in the buffet price which is a super deal.
Service was warm and friendly from the two women there. At $7.99 this buffet is the best kept deal in town !!
I also took advantage of their great samosas (10 for $5 to take home) which came with a bold tamarind sauce. Yum !
Meatless treat!. This place is part bakery, part restaurant - nothing fancy. The buffet is always rich, colorful and delicious and is also reasonably priced under 9 dollars (bread included!). The staff is always friendly.
The space is fairly limited so this isn't a place to bring a big crowd to. It's suited to groups of 2 to 4 people for a casual lunch or supper.
You'd think that a meatless meal would leave you hungry - think again. Worth a try.
If only it wasn't so far away!. I really love the Punjab Sweet House. The atmosphere is definitely dive-y and the service is sometimes seemingly absent (they will come, eventually!) However, the buffet makes up for all shortcomings. The paneer is always delicious and the lentil and chickpea dishes are great too. The rice is tasty and the side salad, though simple, is refreshing after some of the hotter entrees. The naan bread is fresh and excellent and their chai tea is good (you can order it without sugar if you like too). I've only tried a couple of their sweets, both of which were cardamom-flavoured and pretty tasty. My only real complaint is that this restaurant is so far from the city centre - I once looked at Transit and it would have taken an hour and a half to get there by bus! Definitely a must when travelling by car, and the prices are super low.
Not Too Bad. If you want an elegant place to dine for East Indian food, this ain`t it, but if you`re just looking for basics, this`ll do you just fine. The prices were reasonable, the service was okay and the food was a buffet. It`s like Mel`s Diner, but ethnic. I haven`t read the other`s reviews of this place yet, but do look them over to gauge an idea.
Samosas!. Amazing samosas! The best i have had! And 6 for 4.50? nothing beats that price!
Best Samosas in Winnipeg!. Haven't had the chance to enjoy a meal here, but these are without a doubt the BEST samosas in Winnipeg! And CHEAP! They're 75cents each, or 50cents each if you buy ten...and you WILL eat all of them! Fabulous, and they're equally excellent re-heated days later in the oven (don't microwave them...not good!) We often drive to a nearby location *ahem* to have their butter chicken, but this place is vegetarian and doesn't have it - but we make a special trip here JUST for samosas!
Great Price!. The vegetarian buffet is simple but very tasty. Price is absolutely reasonable. Don't miss out taking home vegetable patty for a party as they will be a hit ($6 for 12)
Worth of money.. excellent sweets.. must visit there for sweets.. they don’t advertise their restaurant, they don’t do skip the dishes.. but people still walk to them for their food.. always crowded because of demand.. I give them 5 stars*****
Delicious sweets but service is usually slow, they don't take credit cards & debit machine's down alot lately.
