Review Sana Souphouse - Winnipeg

Jeffrey Patteson
I had a very nice lunch today. It was my first time at Sana Soup House and it went be my last. I had the tomato bisque soup this time and I had a hard time choosing from all the delicious options they have. Next time I'll probably get a flight of soups so I can try more than one at a time! I liked the sandwich too. Fresh ingredients and a pretzel style bun which was perfect. They are also a member of The Local Frequency so you can earn local dollars and/or spend local dollars there as well.

I had the "flight of soup" (three soups of your choice) while my girlfriend had the chicken noodle. All the soups were tasty and filling, and prices weren't bad for downtown at all (~$20 after tax for both orders with no drink).

There food is good! I recommend French onion soup for you guys!!

I went for my first time last week and had the soup sandwich combo with wild mushroom soup and roast beef sandwich. the soup was very good and wasn't at all what I had been expecting. it had fresh veggies and herbs and lots of mushrooms in a nice broth. the sandwich bread was nice and fresh marble rye. it is a nice open clean atmosphere and very busy.

The soups and sandwiches are really good and the prices are fair. However, do not adventure yourself there after 5. The two times I did it, the staff was rushing me. The second time, though, was just beyond any possible explanation: i arrived at 5:00 and the waitress told me I would need to be finished at 5:30 (opening hours are until 6). When I decided to stay and order anyway, she started to sweep the floor (and kept doing it while I was eating) and pulling chairs up. I am seriously questioning whether I will ever be back.

Very friendly staff, they have a great selection of food, especially for vegetarians and vegans. I had the Greek salad with borscht on the side, the soup was flavourful and tangy, and the vegetables in the salad we're crisp and fresh. It was a bit of a wait to get served after seating, but otherwise a lovely experience, especially for a lighter lunch

Very cozy on a cold day. I love a good Reuben sandwich, and they have one of the best. Quiet place with good music. Girlfriend and I love dates here, moderately priced for a soup and sandwich. Almost tried all the soups, dill pickle is a personal favourite! Always relaxed, fast yet quality food.

Their cold turkey sandwich was delicious! It is worth recommending. However, I was expecting a creamy brown mushroom soup that I ordered, it was runny but it tastes hearty and good. Very nice, polite and cheerful server we had.

I came here as a vegan when this place first opened and was pretty disappointed. I decided to give this place another try since I no longer have strict food restrictions. The borsht was disappointingly bland, like beet water. They don't have an option on skip to add sour cream so I assumed they would have some on the side (like other restaurants do) but nope. The avocado chicken sandwhich was also bland! I added salt & pepper just to add something other than mayo to it. Spices & seasonings exist, guys! Maybe third time's the charm, but for now I gotta give Sana 2 stars for their crimes against seasoning.

First time here... Service was prompt and Friendly. Soup was surprisingly hearty.. I like that in a soup. I had the special which was the Ruben.. I didn't like it so much... The meat was so thick cut it was hard to bite through.. It would be much better shaved but taste was on point. will definitely come back.

Borscht and wild mushroom soups were great, we also tried a sandwich each which was actually homemade with sliced (not cold cuts) meats and cheeses and homemade sauces and fresh bread.

The food is fresh & delicious, with a nice wine selection. The staff is friendly & helpful, & keep the place very clean. The occasional Argentine Tango parties are a real treat! A lovely way to spend a Saturday evening, whether you're a dancer or a spectator. Love it!!

Food is tasty, fresh and nourishing. Friendly service and I make a point of going when I am in the neighbourhood.

Came in, looked over the menu, ordered, and left with a fresh hot sandwich in less than 10 minutes AND the place was almost at capicity. Superb quality and value.

I love the greek salad! However for the price and quantity of a large salad I don't believe it was worth it.

Just had the Red Borscht soup for lunch... amazing. Simply delicious. Lots of veggies to fill you up, perfect seasoning with lots of dill, so good. Nice beet flavour balanced with the cream. I could eat another bowl.

Very nice atmosphere overall and the food was great. Perfect place for a quick business lunch.

Really great soup!!! I’ve seen this place several times from the bus window and decided it was time I gave it a shot. Well worth it and I’ll be back!

So happy to find a restaurant that always has peanut soup on offer. It’s perfectly made- the only thing that could make it better is if you could have the option of adding chicken to it. <br/>The pear salad is also delicious with nice big slices of pear as is the blueberry brie grilled sandwich (with chicken) although some might find the blueberry a bit too sweet. I have only ever ordered on skip from here so no comment on the actual restaurant but the food is always piping hot on arrival.

A fantastic first experience at Sana SoupHouse for lunch today. We were delighted to find a soup flight on the menu as it would've been impossible to choose only one of their fresh, house-made soups that order. My flight was the wild mushroom soup (a delicious substitute for the dill pickle soup that sadly had run out), a creamy and spicy coconut Thai soup and my favourite, the silky Western African Peanut soup. All three were lick-the-bowl good; served in an adorable bento box with a baked bun and butter. Can't wait to return and try more from the menu! Oh, and the crispy roasted red pepper turkey melt panini and the grilled ham and pineapple panini were the perfect "side dishes" - make no mistake; the soups are definitely the star of the show!

I went for the first time today to do take-out, so I'm only basing on that experience. Can't comment on sit-down. I ordered zuppa Toscana, with an "egg bun" as choice of bread, and it was quite tasty, I would have that soup again.  Had a good amount of spice and other flavours (could see the fennel). Although I expected more chunks of food and less broth, I didn't feel I got good value for money. The egg bread was okay, a little sweet as advised but dry. Zuppa was mid-range soup category at $7 for their standard cup, which looks about 250 ml, not much. I upsized for $1, but I was still hungry after. I don't like to be hungry after $9. They missed the mark on their "take-out" packaging. The bun came with a packet of butter, but no plastic knife.  The plastic spoon was wrapped in napkin, sealed with scotch tape. Scotch tape? I had to be careful not to rip the napkin. Tape made it worse. Also, I had to sit and wait 5 min for it, with just one take-out person ahead of me. Not sure why it should take that long to scoop soup and package it up.That said, I would go back when I feel like spending a little more, and try the African peanut stew, that's what it smells like in there. The restaurant inside looks clean and modern.  I give the soup flavour a 4. Portion 3. Take-out Service 3.5. Pricing could be a slightly lower, but quality wise is better value than a chain coffee shop soup.

I don't think your getting great value food here, but the soups they have are delicious. I recommend trying the flight of soups where you get 3 for $12. Service is just okay. My favorite soup is the West African Peanut.
ABitPicky
I've tried this place a few times, and every time there has been something wrong. Coffee spills, gritty soup, lipstick stain on cup, slow service, or lukewarm soup. The food tastes good, but is too expensive to overlook the flaws.

Had been meaning to try this place for years after passing it almost daily on my commute. Finally made it happen last week and unfortunately I don't think I'll be back. We ordered take out. I had the mushroom soup and while the flavour was decent, it was overpriced and had a hair in it. :( overall, was not impressed.
NewAge5
Nice variety of unique soups and sandwich selection which were very tasty. Pleasantly surprised with their flavours. It was clean and friendly, quite slow service, but nothing stands out other than it was fairly empty each one we have been here. Generally no complaints here.

Awful service - above average food. The food here is great but like other reviewers have mentioned the service is poor. In an atmosphere where service is integral to business success one would think that this would have the same amount of focus and dedication they have to the good quality and taste in food. One would presume that most people who go here for lunch are local business employees. Most of which have 30-60 minute lunch hours. Beside that fact, it is enough to make a customer go elsewhere. They've got the art of the food quality down, now the focus needs to be on the service. A customer should see a server more than twice in an hour duration (once for taking the order and again for bringing the food). An empty glass should not be sitting on a table waiting to be filled for 20 - 30 minutes nor should a customer be sitting waiting to pay for so long that they finally get up and just walk up to the counter to pay with their half eaten sandwich sitting on the table to be packed up.

Terrible Service is Dragging Down this Decent Lunch Spot. I work nearby and have been to Sana at least 5 times before writing this review. For a busy lunch hour spot, the servers sure don't greet, take orders, or clean tables with any sense of urgency. They take forever to acknowledge you and if you need a minute to decide, it will be 20 before you see them again. Then another 20 for the food. I mean, isn't the soup already made? My empty water glass and fellow diner waited 25 minutes for any attention in a restaurant with only 3 active tables. My review? Consistently good food, consistently inattentive service. Disappointing. Are you reading this, Sana Soup House?

Great new restaurant. I had the West African Peanut Soup and the Roasted Red Pepper Turkey Melt and it absolutely exceeded my expectations. I wasn't that hungry and I was planning on packing half of it all up and taking it with me but I couldn't stop eating it. And the environment was very nice. Also, I'm a huge critic on bathrooms and the bathroom was very classy.

The borscht was fabulous :)

Simply Fantastic. Cutest vibe from the moment you walk in, coupled with the best soup I've ever had. Sandwiches are very good too. Such a huge fan of this place!

Did not impress me. I finally tried Sana Soup House I work downtown and it has been on my wish list for quite some time. I had the potato soup with bacon and the red pepper and turkey melt. Neither were horrible but neither impressed me as well. 12 dollars for a soup and sandwich is not insane but if you want me to come back you need to have more flavor and more substance to the meals.

I had lunch at Sana many times in the last couple of months and I was always very happy. Today I decided to drop by for quick breakfast. I ordered crapes and they were to die for!! Light and fluffy not too sweet, perfect combination. It made my morning!! I will definitely come by again!

I have been here 3 times now and the soup is always excellent. Service can be slow during the lunch rush but it's worth the wait. It's also nicely quiet in the afternoons. I look forward to coming in on a winter day with a good book and knowing great warm soup will be waiting for me.

Tasty all round. Soup flights - what a great idea! I had Zuppa Toscana, West African Peanut Soup, and Dill Pickle Soup. My companion had the same, but switched the Dill Pickle for the Wild Mushroom. We shared the Grilled Ham & Pineapple sandwich - and the server very thoughtfully brought it on two plates. Everything was excellent. We arrived before noon and the service was very prompt, but I could tell it was getting slower as the restaurant filled up. I can't wait to go back!

Possibilities for Lunch. Ate here two weeks ago after perusing the Hydro Farmer's Market. I must say I am a big fan of the bread they use!<br/>However I am not enamoured with the turkey roll pressed meat which reminded me of packaged products I avoid. The rest of the sandwich was tasty and the right size for lunch! The accompanying soup (mushroom) was tasty. It would be nice to have a smaller portion of soup (as an option). I don't want soup to fill me up so much that I can't enjoy the sandwich. My companion had the borscht and the turkey Caesar sandwich which he enjoyed! All in all this place is very clean, modern, the staff are friendly and prompt service wise. I will eat here again if downtown.

Tasty lunch. My first time in this place today happened to be not too busy a day. I ordered the white Borscht and the roasted red pepper turkey melt. Both the soup and the sandwich were very tasty. My partner had the grilled mushroom sandwich we she also found satisfactory. This place is an excellent choice for a tasty lunch on weekdays in the downtown area. Service was good and price was decent.

A little pricey but quite good.. I have eaten here twice, take out both times, which costs 50¢ extra. the first time I ordered the white borscht with the Turkey red pepper melt. what I got was the white borscht and a Ham and Swiss. the soup while light on ingredients was tasty and the sandwich was just OK. the next visit I had the Africa peanut soup and the melt again which I did get this time. the soup was very good, exactly what I expected it to taste like. the melt was more a turkey with slightly limp cheese. I guess they relied on the warm bread to melt the cheese. but the red pepper spread made up for the rest.

This place is a really good gem for downtown. I had the grilled ham and pineapple sandwich with a sausage and bean soup. Both were very tasty and service was prompt. The prices are very very reasonable for what they serve, and I will defiantly come back.

Soup!!. Beautiful decor, I love my soups! Took it to work, what a shock when I opened my Cream of Leek & Potato soup, it was mostly broth with white specks floating in my soup, what was that, bad milk gone bad! This had no body, or flavour, few potatoes and carrots, what happened to the leeks? Paid over $6 with taxes, very disappointed, will not be returning. Had to go buy another soup from somewhere else, couldn't even finish the soup I paid.

WoW. In all areas.. First of all, the decor and arrangement of tables (i.e., I don't like to be jammed elbow to elbow with another table). Its simply arranged, with beautiful red top tables, a very comfy lounging area with deep in the down leather chairs, Tons of sunlight, and a really cool, eat at the bar set-up. Has anyone felt awkward walking into a restaurant alone and taken up a whole table, jamming it more obvious? Don't say it doesn't matter folks, it does and you know it!<br/>Now lets get onto the soups, salads etc.~ they are all great. You will find one you adore, and come back for. Mine is now Cream of Fennel. Absolutely my favourite sandwich haven't discovered it ~yet. :-)<br/>AND BY THE WAY, whoever complains about a low cost, made from scratch, healthy soup....should be mindful that<br/>in most restaurants you are being charged at least $2.50 and upwards for a common cup of coffee. Which is of no nutritional value. <br/>P.S. I love the brand of bottled water, its Canadian Gold (carbonated & non-carb.)

Serene Sana Souphouse. Really liked the atmosphere in this place. Well appointed and kind of serene, with some space between the tables so you aren't forced to listen to the conversations of your neighbour. Service was friendly and helpful. I had soup and sandwich. Wild mushroom soup that was ok but not life changing, and the ham and pineapple sandwich which was quite good - I liked the slight habanero kick that the glaze had. Worth a return visit for sure.

I am a fence sitter on this one. At first glance, the restaurant is very pretty inside. I imagined it to be a self serve restaurant where you ladle your own soup and pay at the counter. I was surprised to see a little sit down restaurant. My girlfriend and I sat down and received excellent service. The staff is very friendly. However, the first thing I noticed is the extremely tiny menu. They do not have a lot of variety. We both ordered the red borscht and shared the grilled vegetable sandwich. The place seems quite inexpensive with the prices at $5.50 for a small and $7.50 for a large soup. An addition of a sandwich will run you $5.00. This seems fair read out to you but personally I thought it was still too muh for what we got. The sandwich although tasty, was tiny. The soups were good too but I noticed all the soups used fairly inexpensive ingredients and only one had protein. (Sausage). I just felt the soups didn't have that much sustenance and I was left hungry after. For the soup to be a meal they need to add some protein, and perhaps some other ingredients to give it some body. If your going to call yourself a soup house, you should also strive to have more than 4 soups on the menu, 3 of which seem vegetarian. A larger menu and an increased variety of soups to appeal to people who are looking to have a bowl of soup keep them satisfied for the rest of the afternoon will greatly improve this place. I liked the concept very much but it fell a little short.

Came in for lunch with a friend last week. Was very impressed by several vegetarian options. Soup was alright. Left feeling neutral about the experience.

On the fence. Good:<br/>- Excellent soup, good portion, very flavorful (Sorrel borscht with eggs)<br/>- The sandwich was super tasty (Grilled ham & pineapple), was grilled just perfectly and it was all around a perfect compliment to the soup<br/>- The price was good for the amount of food and how exceptionally yummy it was!<br/><br/>Bad:<br/>- I had to wait half an hour for my food, while the people that came 20 minutes after me got theirs around the same time. I thought coming a bit before noon I would be able to eat quickly; I actually would have preferred take out.<br/>- I noticed that everyone after me was being greeted at the door, when I came in no one said anything so I sat myself. I'm used to being ignored but this kind of hurt, especially after seeing how friendly they were to the other customers... :(<br/>- The soup special wasn't mentioned to me too, it turned out to be something I definitely would've ordered, so there's that.<br/><br/>TL;DR good food, service okay (don't go alone.....?), maybe I was just unlucky, definitely willing to go again when I have more time to spare instead of on my work lunch break.
ILoveGoodFood
So so disappointed with this place. It was highly over priced - nearly $7 for a tiny bowl of soup that was mostly just broth & a slice of toasted baguette. The soup was nothing special. The Convention Centre cafe makes better soup for way less money!<br/>The part I was so unhappy about was that they charge $0.50 to takeout! It's a downtown restaurant - who doesn't take-out!! They claim it's because the bowl is biodegradable but most places have those bowls. <br/>I would definitely NOT return!!
Downtownwinnipeg
Best Soups in Winnipeg. I have been several times now and every time I have been amazed by the atmosphere, staff, and menu!<br/><br/>The soups are changed daily and every time I have come in there has been a new addition to the menu. So far my favorite is the red borscht with ham and pineapple sandwich. Some of the reviews I have read noted the lack of vegetarian options but I think the owners have taken notice because there are clearly labeled vegetarian options (which are also delicious). As a new downtown restaurant it is impressive to see how quickly the restaurant is adapting to cater to its downtown customers.<br/><br/>I look forward to seeing this restaurant turn into a downtown staple and recommend everyone try their homemade soups at least once! They offer frozen soups from the previous day which I have taken home and are delicious the second time through. The only problem I can think of is that I can never again eat Campbell’s Soup!
Daily Eater
Awesome, definitely check them out.. I already love this place. I have had a number of their soups now and they're awesome! I REALLY like the White Borscht. I was really reluctant because it is (was?) called "Horseradish and Egg Borscht" but man is it GOOD! I don't like Horseradish and wouldn't have guessed that it's a part of this soup, I think it's just the way it works with all the other flavours. The Red Borscht is amazing, even the vegetarian version. I expected the vegetarian version to be unfulfilling but it was still great, filling and fulfilling. I've also had the Zuppa Toscana and the Mushroom and Dill and not one has disappointed.<br/>The Turkey Caesar Sandwich is incredible. It is now my favourite sandwich in the city. The initially questioned the turkey roll but it is top notch and adds so much to it. The cucumbers are what put it over the top though in my opinion. I've also had the Ham and Swiss melt and the Roasted Red Pepper Turkey Melt and both were top notch.<br/>I was really impressed with the food, the atmosphere and the price. I was compelled to right this review after seeing some of the couple of harsh reviews from the people there on the opening day. Give the place a chance to get into a routine and train up the staff! What do you really expect from a Souphouse server on the first day? I'm really impressed with the abundance of vegetarian options now on the menu. A great addition, whether it was in the game plan initially or a response to customer feedback, I tip my hat.
Intrepid Diner
Needs Improvement. The bottom line is that the soup doesn't match up to the quality of the décor. <br/><br/>Walking into the place I was immediately struck by how nice it looked inside. The interior looks like an elegant bistro. The granite topped soup bar is striking. The large, padded leather chairs near the window were very comfortable. The tables and chairs for the diners are much fancier than one would expect at a place that features soup. The Winnipeg themed artwork adorning the walls is a very nice touch. <br/><br/>Our waitress was friendly. She was quick to refill our water glasses. I asked her the significance of the name Sana. She didn't know, but said she would ask and let me know. She never did. <br/><br/>They only have four varieties of soup available. There are also four sandwich options. There was a dessert stand without any dessert items inside. Beverage options are also somewhat limited...no soft drinks outside of raspberry flavoured Italian soda. I was told by the waitress that the soup selections were going to remain static with some variation in the future. Reading the other posts, this may not be the case. Two of the sandwich options featured ham. <br/><br/>I elected to have a bowl of West African peanut soup. It was advertised as containing cracked peanuts, vegetables, thickened with sweet potatoes and with chilies to give it a bit of a kick. The only discernible vegetable was carrot. The broth was quite watery and there was absolutely no spice to it. While the flavour was not unpleasant, it didn't live up to the menu description. <br/><br/>On the plus side, the food is fairly cheap. A bowl of soup is $5.50 or $7.50. The sandwiches are $5.50 or $5 if ordered along with a bowl of soup. I had a small bowl of soup and still found the portion to be fairly generous. My friends tried the sandwiches and they were not very large...not a lot of meat in them. Two thought the sandwiches were good and one thought it was quite mediocre. <br/><br/>The place is brand new. We went on opening day. I am hoping that corrections are made. I will give it some time and likely try again. If it turns out to be more of the same, I won't try a third time.

Added new menu. They have added vegan soup which is good for vegan lovers. I tried the grilled ham and pineapple sandwich with white borsch soup this time and sooo good!<br/>Can't wait to try another soup in their menu. Definitely going back for more.<br/><br/><br/><br/>-----27 Mar, 2014-----<br/><br/>Still good the second time.... Tried again this place the second time and the quality of the food and service was still good. I like the décor and ambience feels like you're in a bistro. This place is a step up from other soup places with crappy interiors and rotten chairs. If you are vegetarian don't even think of coming down here because you won't find a vegan soup, unless they will add it to their menu. Recommended for good soup!!!<br/><br/><br/><br/>-----19 Mar, 2014-----<br/><br/>Good Soup. Tried the red beets borscht soup and was very good. Good service and very affordable. My only mild comments, if the staff would be more friendly with the customers. Overall, highly recommended.

Newly opened this week, Sana SoupHouse serves up a menu of gourmet soups and sandwiches that changes daily. Not only are they always keeping their menu fresh, but ingredients are also bought fresh daily. Gourmet soup has a new home in downtown Winnipeg. Modern decor, a marble countertop, and a striking colour palette are found inside Sana SoupHouse I was surprised to see the slightly upscale, modern decor of the soup establishment. Cherry-stained wooden tables, with modern, black cushioned chairs, and fresh flower centerpieces make up most of the dining area. You can also take a seat at their beautiful, marble counter top on one of their modern bar stools. The colour palette of cherry red, black, crème, and pale hardwood floors create a striking colour

When heading out to eat, I like to find areas where there are a few options available.  The better the options, the more I like an area.  The area around the MB Hydro building is one such area.  There’s Rudy’s , which I haven’t reviewed yet.  There are also several places I have reviewed.  Ming Court , Marcello’s , Kokeb , and of course my home away from home, Twist Café . SInce yesterday you can add SANA Souphouse to that list.  Opened across Graham from Twist, SANA SoupHouse hopes to fill the void many people feel with the departure Soup Pierre.  Given my experiences there in the first couple of days, I think this restaurant will more than nicely fill the gap.
