Review Sushi Daruma - Winnipeg

A hidden gem in the Henderson Hwy area! Beautiful presentation, delicious sushi! They knock it out of the park and then some! Owners are sweet and staff is friendly :-) my miso soup even had a green onion in the shape of a heart, it loved me as much as I loved it! If you’re ever in the area, Stop by!! Try the Dave’s Super Friday roll! (not pictured - but my all time favourite)

Went pick up sushi for my kid's bday. One of the best sushi in Winnipeg. For that couple who gave 1 star and complained about wants to eat more fish. Don't be cheap, order sashimi. Business is tough during pandemic, don't be a dink. Happy holiday to all!

My favorite place sushi! Conveniently located in the strip mall with plenty places to park and on a bus route. Last year I was able to order a platter for my brother's birthday by phone and they had it ready by the pickup time. I was pregnant at the time so I was glad that there were some California Rolls, Yam Rolls, and Dynamite Rolls for me to eat because I couldn't go more than 9 months without sushi. My family was able to enjoy it at home. I was there for dinner yesterday with my friend and my husband tagged along. He wasn't husband a sushi person but he surely enjoyed the chicken katsu. There's a little something for everyone on their menu. Sadly no deserts due to a delay in the shipments which was understandable because of the pandemic. Our servers were polite and friendly. Everything was reasonably priced! Definitely my date night or hangout spot whenever I'm in the mood for sushi. I'll be ordering takeout from here again for my daughter's first sushi experience when her teeth comes in!

We enjoy trying the platter of the month. They never disappoint!! Order ahead and choose your date/time to pick up.

Great place to get sushi! They have affordable platters that change every month. The staff are friendly and do their best to serve as many people as they can. If you’re looking to order for holidays, you better book in advanced as they tend to get a lot of orders! The Ocean King roll is a must try if you love all kinds of sushi.

We have ordered rolls here. Were so disappointed, just rice, no fish at all, only cucumbers and row avocado. Won't go there again, neither recommend to anyone.

***MUST EAT - BEST & ONLY SUSHI PLACE ON HENDERSON HWY*** I've been here many times before for their seasonal platters & all I can say is wow I'm very surprised at how flavorful these sushi rolls are! I've bought many platters to go & I can highly vouch for how great they are! At my family get togethers the plater would be all eaten out! Finally had the opportunity to dine in with my brother. PROS • tons of parking, located in the shoppers strip mall • atmosphere is cozy & the staff is always friendly • best items to go : seasonal platters • delicious sushi rolls • sashimi is always bomb here • appetizers as well CONS • if you're ordering to go please be advised it does take some time, they do prioritize people eating inside more than the take out orders so they have to make sure they have enough ingredients for everyone either than that, I've been an avid customer, have always come back whenever I craved sushi. MUST EAT HERE - TAKE OUT OR DINE IN - BOTH DONT DISAPPOINT

Ordered these rolls on Friday. It’s disgusting. Most terrible experience in my life, no fish at all, hard avocado, only cucumbers. Won't go there again. Don't recommend this place.

New favorite sushi place. The seafood pizza is to die for! I need to go back soon
Vicky Lachowski
My favorite place in the city! Also I LOVE taiyaki, and this is the only place in WPG I've found that serves it. Bringing those flavors I miss from Japan back home
Seth Baker
Great Sushi to have in the North end of the city! For maybe 50 cents more for a roll of sushi, it is definitely worth it!
Tom Ryan
Always quality food and they have a good gluten free selection as well!
Rob Cormack
Hard to find anything wrong with this restaurant other the it can get busy and you may have to wait just a little. But no biggie because the wait is worth it.
Danielle Valentine
Fantastic service, great food! This is my go to sushi place, love it!
Kathy Samagalski
From the outside it doesn't look like much, but inside....it is so nice and comfortable and clean....the servers are so friendly and patient as I ask over and over..."what's this one?"..Sushi Daruma has become a favorite restaurant of mine and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Good food, cool place to eat

we love this place! consistently DELICIOUS + great service!

Best sushi in Winnipeg!! Exceptional quality for what you pay for!
Joanne Miller
The platters look great but I do love my sashimi so wish they were in the platters as well. Are the platters the same price each month and if we aren't into spicy food, can we ask that no spice be added to the platters?
Vivian Sato
Fabulous place, great service, great food! It's our "go to place" for sushi and their specialty "shochu" drinks !! My fav :)
Robin Stamler
Thank you so much for accommodating our office of 14 people!
Cheryl Krestanowich
It is consistently fantastic with friendly service! I love it here.

After many years of poor quality sushi restaurants in Wpg, this one is always consistent with quality, creativity and flavour. Best sushi in Winnipeg in my opinion :)

First time customers... we were pleasantly surprised with the size of this restaurant (relative to how it appeared from the outside) and it was particularly clean and updated. Service with a smile and the variety of dishes were ordered were absolutely fresh and delicious. The Caterpillar role was beautifully presented and we enjoyed practically licking our plates. Tempura shrimp and veggies were spot on. Prices were good and can’t state it enough... service with a smile!!!

I just finished eating dinner from Sushi Daruma and I was disappointed in the food. I noticed a decline in the food quality since the last time I ate there. Rice was mushy, over seasoned and hard to swallow. How ever they have excellent staff and a great atmosphere.
I end up at this restaurant frequently as there are so few dining options in the East Kildonan area, but it is always just mediocre. The fish often tastes less than fresh and the menu is very much the typical North American Sushi fare of 15 years ago. I wish they had ramen or takayuki. The atmosphere is nice however and they do have WIF.I The service is friendly and efficient. It is a bit overpriced, especially the lunch combos.

Sushi did not Wow me at all. I've had better sushi at many diffent places in Winnipeg. Atmosphere was so/so. I wouldn't go back. Service was great though :)
Peg Ger
service is great! I really mean it! the restaurant has simple and clean look!and their sushi tastes great :) As they are the only sushi restaurant owned by the Japanese in Winnipeg, I sort of wish that they would have more traditional style sushi.

Every time my boyfriend and I want sushi we make a point of trying a new place, so this afternoon we found ourselves in Sushi Daruma. It's in a strip mall so there was ample parking space. The restaurant was nice inside with the sushi chef visible at the back of the room, and both walls lined with elevated, comfortable cushioned booths. There were only a couple of other tables so the service was very quick.

We ordered four "inside out rolls" which all came with 6 pieces. We got the sweet tuna bakudan roll, tempura spicy crab roll, tempura spicy shrimp roll and the ginger beef roll. They were all larger than most other sushi restaurants and very fresh and succulent. They were all delicious, but the highlight was the sweet tuna bakudan roll as it was topped with crispy panko crumbs and teriyaki sauce.

It was on the pricier side though. For four rolls it came to around $25, which seemed like a lot compared to other restaurants. It was delicious and the rolls were a good size, so I didn't mind. Also, my boyfriend ordered a side of spicy mayo and it cost $0.50. We didn't mind, but he always orders it and he said no other place has ever charged for it so keep that in mind if you're asking for sauce add-ons I guess.

I really enjoyed this place. I phoned in a pick up order, the server was so friendly and nice on the phone. When I picked up the order it was perfect they actually gave me enough wasabi! Staff was friendly, place looked cute and clean. It's not the best sushi I've ever had but overall it was very good especially for the price. I was very happy and will be ordering from here again.

I KINDA like it. Best sushi pizza I've ever had, but their rolls aren't that great.
Bestbite
Worst Sushi Restaraunt. The sushi rolls are over stuffed with rice and fall apart almost always. Ingredients do not taste fresh. I would suggest steering clear from this sub-par restaurant.
Intl.Foodie
Bland but passable. I ordered the sweet chili chicken katsu, the california, and the chopped scallop rolls and their only redeeming quality was that the rice was lovely and moist. The ingredients were sub par and not fresh which I found disappointing. The scallop roll tasted like nothing. I am honestly not sure how that even happens. All it had going for it was the roe which gave it that nice crunch/pop. Otherwise it was tasteless. The sweet chili chicken katsu was tasty only for the sauce though the chicken was very overdone, and the california roll was mush.
Normally, I am a sushi snob, so I didn't order any raw fish due to the poor reviews on ingredients. I'm glad I didn't bother. Sushi N on St. Anne's is still my gold standard for fresh fish and tasty sushi.
I won't make the trek here again but if I'm in the area I might give it a second go as there were some interesting combos on the menu I'd like to try.

Been eating here for the past few years. Food quality has declined and freshness of seafood is at an all time low. I would avoid this place.

Omg first time so good. I have eaten around at many sushi places, good and bad.. But I was really pleasantly surprised and impressed with daruma. Definitely would go back. Their yam roll is stellar good
Shauna.muldrew
First time there, definitely would go back!. We came here because of the good urban spoon rating, and were very impressed! Great food, affordable prices, very friendly, food came out perfectly timed, and lot's of unique variety. This will be our regular go-to sushi place from now on :)

Our policy of allergies. As our policy, we take customer's food allergy concern as a serious matter and pay extra caution to the food we serve. We ask all our customers to mention food allergies when ordering. During your order for a California roll and a Spider roll, there was no mentioning about Deathly allergies but a request to substitute avocado with cucumber in a California roll. We went over and double-checked your order along with your request. We have customers asking to substitute avocado with cucumber on a regular basis so we had assumed that food allergies was not a matter that time. The first time avocado allergy was mentioned to us was when your order was completed and handed to you. We had re-made your Spider roll which included avocado with no charge. To ensure our quality service, please let us know your allergies in advance. Thank you for your understanding.

Sushi Daruma

Screwed up order!. Ordered sushi from here tonight and told them three times on the phone that there can be no avocado. Deathly allergic to it!! Surprise surprise they made the roll with it in it. They Did nothing about it. Lost our business now and forever.

Worst aushi. Went to pick up a quick lunch, ordered number 86 and the spider.
Big mistake, fish was not fresh- poor judgement on their part to serve it.
I certainly regretted it for hours after.

Good Sushi, Good Value. Had California Roll, Spicy Tuna and Salmon Maki, Rainbow Roll, Miso Soup and Tempura Shrimp. All was delicious, service was good and the prices reasonable.

Authentic japanese restaurant. Really great food with excellent service and lovely atmosphere!
I tried their california, dynamite and chicken katsu rolls which I heard the most popular rolls.
It was all excellent! They are also doing the lunch special buy two get one free, I will surely come back and try that!

Umm. I like this place when people say where is a good place for sushi? I say sushi durama I love the beef teriyaki and chicken katsu.

Excellent!!. The perfect place to enjoy Japanese food. There are a lot of vegetarian choices and large variety of Japanese dishes. The sushi chefs are polite and excellently skilled!

Great Sushi. We tried Sushi Daruma this week and I thought it was great. I loved the different types of rolls that they offer, like the Mango Cali roll and the Banana one. It was great to try something different. I will be going back for sure!

Great Sushi Place. When you look outside, it may not look like much , but when you get inside, the restaurant has amazing decor, and atmosphere. Was given great service and the sushi was real great too . Would recommend and bring friends /dates here, great place.

Love, love, love this place. Staff is always pleasant and food come out fast. I have had take out and also are Inside. Great prices!!! Glad it is in my neighbourhood!

True Japanese place. This place is really an authentic Japanese restaurant. The owner is married to a Japanese woman and lived in Japan for years and knows what's he's doing.
Tetsu
Genuine Japanese restaurant .... Genuine Japanese restaurant
It might be the only Japanese restaurant which is run by Japanese and has the most of its staffs Japanese.
You'll feel like you really are in Japan.
Also provides the best Japanese foods in Winnipeg

I like! Yummy sushi!. My friends and I usually pass by this place when we do our 3 hour walk, a couple weeks ago we finally arranged a date to have supper there. The prices are reasonable for sushi and the portion sizes are filling as well. Their yam tempura said 5 pieces, but I wasn't expecting 5 big pieces so I was satisfied with that, I also had the tempura yam roll and the creamy yam roll. I really liked yam rolls so that's what I ended up ordering for my first time here at Daruma sushi. I'm definitely going to try out the other varieties when the weather warms up or sometime in the spring.I really liked the chicken katsu and the sauce that went with it too! The only thing I had a small problem with was the price for the ramune (marble pop soda) which is $3.00, when I know a place that sells the exact product for less than $3.00. Aside from that, service was great and accommodating, I will try their dinner special as well with my friends when we plan another get together there again.

Tried out Sushi Daruma today for the first time and I will definitely be back! The mango California Roll was absolutely amazing. The smoking banana roll is pure bliss! I had a glass of the plum wine and it was really good. Very sweet and not over powering. Great place!
Jean
Excellent!! Everything was .... Excellent!!
Everything was well presented and tasty. Especially enjoyed trying the monkey roll (for dessert)
Ringo
Real Japanese food!. I've gone to this restaurant a lot recently since my friend recommended it. The food here is excellent and it's very authentic unlike most other Japanese restaurants in the city.
They just started serving a Japanese liquor called Chu-Hi.
I tried this before when I visited Japan and I loved it! I'm glad that I can now get it in Winnipeg.
Elmo
Winnipeg's best sushi place. Good food& excellent service.
I love Sushi Pizza and Chicken Katsu(deep fried chicken).
Allison
Very fishy taste. I wouldn't recommend. Numerous other places at similar cost that has much better sushi. Rolls fell apart.
Ms Eala
Horrible. White fat from salmon in my roll & some fish brown colored. Returned immediately to get a refund. The owner happened to be there and was incredibly rude. Began trying to justify why I should be ok with paying for low grade food. Will not be returning ever..

Tako- yaki, Daruma salad, chopped scallop gunkan, smoked salmon suhi, gyoza and garden sushi pizza. Very few places in town make this Osaka famous dish. Yummy little egg, flour and octupus balls made with a crispshell.

Presentation was great and staff very friendly and welcoming! Lovely decore and lighting. Take out available too. Way more great foods to try other than just their wonderful sushi.
Wish they were located closer to the village so I could make it my neighbourhood Japanese favourite food place to go. We had complimentary edamame. Thanks for being open late and 7 days a week!!

SUSHI are you calling me. OMG this is one of my favorite places for sushi.
Very friendly staff love the decor and the food is very tasty! I had the garden pizza wasn't what I thought it would be like. It was great a most try! The bana yam roll very tasty who thought banana in a sushi roll? But my god it was so good. Everything look very nice and clean. Check this place out if you haven't yet.

Great Atmosphere. It's a bit pricey but the service and the sushi is always awesome and the atmosphere is very beautiful. It's worth trying.

Delicious. I have been to Sushi Daruma twice so far and both times I had to stay longer than I ever spend in a restaurant because I was just enjoying myself so much. Each bite was just such a delight. I had a bento box because I love variety...the tempura shrimp and sweet potato is just exactly like my favourite Toronto sushi restaurant, Sushi Inn (on Cumberland). The quality is top notch, very fresh. The sashimi was perfect. I especially liked the green tea ice cream. The prices are amazing. I will be back and back and back again!

Disappointed. I've been to Sushi Daruma once before and had a good meal. Tonight, however, I was disappointed with my sashimi.

For $13.50, I received eight very small, very thin pieces (6cm x 4 cm x 0.6 cm) of salmon and tuna sashimi. The texture of the salmon was off - its appearance was coarse and, when picked up with chopsticks, the meat flaked and fell apart into two pieces. (Picture in album.)

I ate my meal but realized I was incredibly disappointed that Sushi Daruma would serve such poor quality and tiny pieces of sashimi to me. I talked to our waitress, but seeing as I had finished my meal there was not much she could do but inform the kitchen.

All other aspects of the meal were fantastic. The mango California roll was delicious and the service was friendly and attentive. I am unsure of whether I will be returning.

We had a great dinner at sushi daruma. The calamari was the best I have ever had and the sushi was very good too. The atmosphere is nice for a strip mall restaurant and the service was good too. Very nice and helpful staff.

Fresh-tasting sushi and sashimi, very fair prices, friendly and prompt service. Nice decor, clean premises. I'm always sure to enjoy my food here!! Have not had any poor experiences - you will enjoy yourself here!
Sam
Awesome Sushi!!. I don't know why some people are saying that they are using special K instead of tempura bits. Not True!! The bakudan roll i ordered had tempura bits and was delicious!! I highly recommend Sushi Daruma it's easily in my top 3 sushi place in Winnipeg.
Mujikosann
Japanese style!!!. I had "Calamari Rings".
It's juicier than other restaurant.
It tastes very good!!

Shshi Daruma is far from my place. But I'll definitely go back there again.

They also have a new menu. so I would also like to try their sushi !!

Our Go-To Sushi Joint. My partner and I have always been a fan of Sushi Daruma, both dine in and take out options. We mostly stick to the rolls as neither of us are huge fans of sashimi, and have never had a bad experience. Staff is prompt, quick, and extremely courteous.

Try the bana-yam roll! Tastiest thing on the menu, in my opinion!
Ed39ca
Sushi daruma. The sushimi portions were very small in size for the cost 14.50 for 12 peices compared to what I 've seen elsewhere
The rolls were just OK and farely prices

Awesome !!. I love eating at Sushi Daruma !!
I love Daruma Dinner (dinner special). It has edamame or goma-ae, sushi, tempura and sashimi. Big portion and reasonable price !!
Also their sashimi is always so fresh and big slices. I love it !!
Everything is so tasty :)
Their service is always great !!

Love it. I go here all the time. I love the yakisoba roll and typhoon eye roll.

A gem in North Kildonan!. I love Sushi Daruma! It's one of the few family-owned, sit-in restaurants in North Kildonan that the neighbourhood is slowly recognizing as a must for great Japanese food at reasonable prices. I've slowly been eating through the menu, and there really is something for everyone. In addition to a wide variety of contemporary and traditional style sushi, they also have great kitchen entrees like yakisoba pan-fried noodles, the inventive sushi pizzas, and even takoyaki octopus dumplings to satisfy the adventurous or nostalgics. They do take out for almost all of their menu, though there are dine-in specials and occasional new dishes up for grabs as well. They're licensed and have got a decent selection of beers, domestic and Japanese. Very cozy decor and friendly staff who happily answer any questions. Quite accommodating for newcomers to sushi, and allergies, so long as they are informed early on. My favourite rolls currently are the yakisoba roll and the sweet chili chicken katsu roll. Their specialty rolls (a few in picture) are filling and flavourful. Far superior to buffet sushi without the sting of some downtown eateries. And as others have commented, it's tempura bits, not cereal.
Kristen.shaw
Great food, great prices. Um...were we all eating at the same restaurant?

1) They use real tempura bits. Not Special K.
2) Service is always excellent.
3) The sushi is flavorful and reasonably priced. I've never had any problems with fishy product and the variety and quality of the rolls always leave me satisfied.

I eat here all the time and have never had any problems. This is the only sushi place in the area I frequent. :) Definitely recommended!

Not Recommend!!!. My sister in law got their coupon online, Therefore, we decided to give a try, the service was ok, and the price was about average. the sushi was awful! the rolls were loose inside, Not very well packed together, I ordered a Pink Tuna Nigiri, which is my favourite and normally quite pricey but it was just $4 here. Right after the first bite, I knew it was fake! it doesn't have the flavour of blue finch tuna. it is just white tuna dyed with artificial colouring. I would rather to have the regular tuna. C- Won't go again.
Gluten Free Diary Free
Not a fan. I called to ask if they were able to do gluten free dairy free sushi, which is usually not a problem. The girl I spoke to on the phone was very helpful in helping find a good choice. I had some basic rolls, cooked shrimp and cucumber, and my boyfriend had smoked salmon and cream cheese and tempura shrimp. They were not tasty to be honest. Bland, dry and dull. Unfortunatley I became ill after eating there. I experienced a reaction typical of accidental gluten exposure. My boyfriend also complained he did not feel well after eating there. I do not reccomend it.

Awesome staff, good prices, super fresh and yum!

Just Not Right. Sushi to me is all about the freshness and flavours of the fish.
Today I was disappointed in the quality of my dishes.
Tuna sashimi was sliced in fairly nice sized uniform pieces but the texture was not melt in your mouth and a little fishy. (8pc $13.49)
The chopped scallop roll was the most inadequate as it was utterly tasteless and only had a small amount of scallop in it. The rice was also on the mushy side and it too had no flavour. ($5.59)
Spicy tuna cone was "ok". ($4.25)
Goma ae was not fresh spinach but rather the frozen chopped variety though the sauce was again "ok". ($3.50)
Agedashi Tofu was nice and firm so it didn't fall apart but the broth was unfortunately bland, even with the green onion in it. ($4.25)
There was something odd about the taste of the wasabi too...I just wasn't impressed here today. Prices were also on the high side especially for the quality delivered.
My server however, was excellent, professional and knowledgeable about the food items on the menu.
Debbi Chodyniecki
Disappointed. I had sushi from Daruma shortly after it opened and was disappointed, but I chalked it up to bad choices on the part of the friend that ordered. I tried again recently, and I have to say they won't be getting a third chance. There was a slight fishy smell when I opened the box when I got home, which was a bit of turn off right from the start. The sushi was not visually appealing, and I can honestly say I have never seen that much rice in a maki roll ever. The spider roll looked like it was going to fall apart, and the chopped scallop roll was half filled with rice (there was also rice on the outside). I have been to dozens of sushi restaurants around the city and unfortunately this one ranks at the bottom.
Lalabandita
Great!. I was there just last week and I asked the server about the special k bits. I was told that they don't use the special k stuff anymore, just regular tempura crumbs. Just ask your server and you'll get the same answer. I've been to loads of sushi places in the city and I have to say that Daruma has the best prices by far. Definetly going back.
Noname
Great!. I think this place is really good!~ they actually dont use special k on the rolls any more!
Aurelle
Disappointing. This place is a bit expensive and the quality isnt that great. They use Special K on bakudan roll instead of tempura bits which doesnt taste good at all. Also my friend thinks she got a parasite from eating here. Beware.
Dalfrus
Not bad considering it's the only sushi place close by. They use special k (yes, the cereal) on some rolls (instead of tempura crumbs I think) :(
Jo Boni
Not very tasteful. My fiance and I have gone to this place twice in the past couple weeks. He seems to enjoy the spicy rolls which I never had. I've ordered the Atlantic roll and wasn't fond of how the meat tasted. I also ordered some other roll with raw meat in it and I wasn't that impressed with it.

We thought of trying this restaurant because my fiance liked that there were more choices in spicy rolls unlike Sushi Train and it was close to his place, but I would rather go to Sushi Train any day for raw meat. I would keep going to Sushi Daruma, but I will not order any rolls with raw meat in it.
K2121
Fantastic!. Great interior design in the place and great food.
The prices are very cheap for the huge portions you get. I have been to many high end sushi places and this place ranks up with them. Highly recommend trying the place.
Colin Koop
Went the other day with some friends. Had areally nice atmosphere, but the sushi just wasn't that good. Some Of the fancier rolls were alright but the spicy tuna and bakudan rolls were funny tasting. Unfortunate, I had high hopes!
