Review Rice Bowl Restaurant - Winnipeg

Laura-Lynne Hildebrand
This is our go-to spot in the west end. We LOVE the chicken with lemongrass as well as the tilapia with eggplant. Each dish is infused with so much flavour and cooked to perfection. The portion sizes are generous so we eat the leftovers all week. We love you rice bowl!

Great place. Portions are big. Friendly servers and good food. Can't even finish what we ordered!

First time trying out Filipino cuisine and I will say it is delicious. Tried out several different dishes to get a good idea of what is available. My favorite was the garlic rice and curry along with the Sigsig(?). Absolutely fantastic. Definitely recommend for a bite to eat.

Walked in with low expectations, surprised by the great food and portion size! A good menu with relaxing environment. They seem minimally staffed but otherwise service was good. Had the garlic chicken with rice and chow mein. Besides the noodles tasting like they had sat on a shelf for a few years, the food was good.

Used to love going here for their Caldereta and sisig but we won’t be back. Ordered the rice toppers and the server (filipina with highlights or blonde hair) and I were arguing about how the egg is done when I nicely asked her to cook it more because its raw. Her response was “You wanted Sunny Side up right? This is how we do it here. It’s suppose to be runny.” and she left our table right away. So disgusting and rude. She has no clue what Sunny Side Up is supposed to look like. Neither the cook. The service was soo good months ago I don’t know what happened. The server also looks so grumpy to other tables and looks like she hates her job. We won’t be back. There’s other good filipino restaurants out there who provide good food and good service.

Bad customer service. They will charge you extra if you order take out for the container. They didnt close the lids properly. My car was a mess, called them to complain, got yelled at and was just told that it was my fault. Never coming back.

Best Filipino Food In The City & It's Not Even Close! The Coconut Beef Is To Die For 😍👌🏽

I really love the food here and their portions are great for sharing. The service is quick and the staff show true Filipino hospitality. My favorites are the sisig, the tokwat baboy and the egg plant salad. The only complaint I have is the smokiness of the place when they're cooking. Makes it a bit uncomfortable in the dining room. All our clothes smell like the food we ordered. I think they just have an inadequate exhaust system in the kitchen.

We had the breakfast platter! The food was excellent price, portion & taste was bang on!!! Friendly service ❤️

Amazing food and all the staff arr friendly I recommend it to people. Thank you guys.

Great food. Not happy with the flies flying around your food while eating.

Seafood sinigang not as maasim as we like it before Crispy pata burnt?
Barbara Bullard
It just doesn't taste the same anymore. The Pork Chow Mein container looks, and taste, like they put bean sprouts in the bottom. Then put a little sliced pork on top then added water. The Pork Fried Rice is different now too. This will be my last time going there.

We enjoy our yummy newly cooked food frm the kitchen but I think it needs to expand thumbs up. . .

Food was so good and delicious. We will come back again

Stopped in almost by accident. Great food and presentation. I will be going back to try some other dishes. There was big party going on and I was able to see a lot of the other dishes. I'd give it 4 stars for the food but the restaurant location and the fact that it fills up with smoke from the kitchen gives it a 3 star.

Unbelievable food and service!! Highly recommended!! Lots of leftover food which tastes even better the next day! :)

Sisig. Love the sisig! I recommend this restaurant. :)

Excellent option, very flavorful, inexpensive, love the caldereta

We had a great first dining experience. We grossly underestimated the portion sizes for the price (so reasonable!) and ordered way too much food for 2 people. However, the leftovers have been great! One of the best Filipino restaurants we have been to in Winnipeg!

The service was so warm, welcoming and polite. The cafe is cozy and comfortable. We have been twice, when visiting Winnipeg, and each time the meals have been delicious. The food is flavourful and prepared with care. The prices are fair and the portions are generous. It is a lovely little place for a wonderful meal. We look forward to a future opportunity to visit.

One thing about reviewing restaurants is I often find myself no longer stopping at places I had once visited. The algorithms constantly demand new and fresh material, and so places, such as Rice Bowl, on Sargent become places I used to visit. However, recently I decided I wanted to visit there again after a few years absence. Unfortunately, although I’ve paid three visits over the last couple of weeks or so, my camera acted up and I only have two photos total to show for three visits.

Came here for lunch with a friend on super cold Saturday afternoon. We were craving something rich and greasy and Rice Bowl never disappoints!

If you ever come here, you must order the Sigsig. It is the best I've ever had anywhere. This is a super rich dish! The onions, fat, lime and chili along with the spices that go into this dish gives it a super complex palate with a multitude of flavours. Make sure to order this dish with rice! Other popular Filipino dishes that Rice Bowl does very well is the Calderetta and the Kare Kare. Both comes with meat that is very tender and literally melts in your mouth. They have low and slow cooking down to a science and take their time braising the meat.

Service was excellent. The lone waiter was attentive and came back to check on us a few times to make sure we had everything we needed. The restaurant itself is rather dated. Decor is spartan and could really use an update. Also, ventilation is somewhat lacking, don't wear your favorite blouse or hoody coming to this place cause it'll end up smelling like this place for the next week.

Just tried for the first time. Great food, great service, large portions. Will definely be returning soon to try some other dishes. Tonight we had the beef in coconut cream, fish and eggplant in ginger sauce and chicken satay. All delicious.

The best Filipino food I've had at a restaurant. It's got plenty of selection, but not too much so you know that they can focus on individual dishes with care. The food looks pricy on the menu compared to other Filipino restaurants (around over $10 a dish) but keep in mind one dish feeds 2-3 people. It's definitely meant to be shared and not as an individual portion! They don't include rice in the meal and it's $1.50 for a large bowl that can be split between two people, or one hungry person.

We had tokwat baboy (pork and tofu with onions and a vinegar soy sauce mixture), fried calamari, kare-kare (peanut stew with vegetables, oxtail, and tripe with fermented shrimp paste on the side), and eggplant salad. My favourite was the tokwat baboy. It has chunks of crispy pork belly meat - perfectly juicy and crispy on the top, with diced pieces of fried tofu. The kare-kare was also delicious, like mom makes.

Service was nice and friendly, and the atmosphere was nice and clean.

Would totally recommend this place to someone who has not tried Filipino food before but wants to venture in and try it. I think it's a great "intro" restaurant and will make a great first impression. Whenever I'm back in town this will be a stop I must make now. ;)

After reading a few of the reviews, it seems most of the negative comments were in regards to poor service or expensive dishes. The service, I thought was fine. The server's were always apologetic to patrons whenever they weren't able to fulfill their request. In fact, I felt bad for the lone waiter having to deal with a very rude and condescending patron regarding her take out order. I know the service wasn't the quickest due to the likelihood of being understaff, but that's not a reason to berate anybody.

The menu is very competitively priced compared to other restaurants in it's price bracket. One reviewer mentions that 3 dishes for $40 is an absurd price. That's saying that 13.33 per dish is way too much. I guess it's not buffet prices cheap.

As most people know, Filipino cuisine tends to be very soulful. So loosen your belts, or bring your eating pants. This restaurant definitely reaffirms my belief that Filipino food is on an upswing in mainstream cuisine.

I really love their sweet short ribs! It's a shame I didn't know about the deal they had a few years ago. $10 for a whole plate of ribs on Tuesday? What an amazing deal! And this place is 10 min walk from my house too!

So good that I drive all the way from Pembina just to have their Pork Sisig. My favourite. Ate there a couple of times now. Staff are really nice and friendly. Food is always good. Their kare kare and crispy dinuguan are so good.

we always eat here at this restaurant every occations/events. food here are delicious and reasonably priced. crispy pata and lechon kawali are a must try. always enjoyed every stay here. i suggest moving to a bigger place, having more table to seat big events.

My husband and I came here on a whim one evening after seeing reviews and they did not lie! This tiny 30 person max restaurant is exceptional.
We ordered the coconut beef and the chicken satay and both portions were sizable with excellent flavour. The beef fell apart at the slightest touch and I've honestly never had such flavourful meat. The coconut sauce was sublime. It was rich and creamy but the lemongrass gave it a high note leaving it light instead of overwhelming. The chicken satay I was skeptical of thinking it would be too hot for my husband but it wasn't and he really enjoyed it. The onions in the satay were caramelized perfectly.
We came very hungry and we ate until were were stuffed and still came out with a to go box. The portions going to other tables were huge. The deluxe chow mein was massive.
The restaurant isn't exceptionally clean looking but I didn't feel uncomfortable either. The service was pleasant and quick and the food came out quickly too. We also went around 7 pm on a Friday and were seated right away but since the place is so small, take out wouldn't be amiss if you want to make sure to hedge your bets.
Overall, we paid $30 for a generously portioned meal, excellent taste, great value and leftovers.
I highly recommend this place and will absolutely be back!

Food is great! People don't really care about you though and the place needs more lighting. Overall the food is really good and I would come back to try their other food.

A group of us had lunch here and it was fabulous! It's pretty much one of those little hole in the wall gems, where the decor and atmosphere are very minimal but the food and flavours make up for it. The service also was pretty good. We dined on egg rolls, fried calamari, curry chicken, pad thai, and the coconut beef and all were absolutely delicious. The stand out for me was the coconut beef, so yummy and full of flavour. We will be back!

Their Sisig is to die for. It captures how a Sisig should taste like. Salty and greasy, just the way any Filipino would love it. Also go here with a big group as their servings are big enough for 2-3 people and it's cheap too!

Our go-to Filipino restaurant in the city. These are the usual dishes that we order whenever we go (highly recommended): Sisig, Ensaladang Talong and Crispy Pata.
Recently, I tried their Kare-kare and it was good as well! The only thing that I think needed improvement is their interior design and space, but overall, the food and staff are great!
Hungry Hustler
The only place to go for Filipino food in town!
Not served up in buffet hot tables, this is a refreshing place that puts any and all other Filipino restaurants to shame.
I've been coming here since it opened and although portion sizes have become smaller and prices have gone up. The quality of food you'll receive and abundance of flavor from every dish will justify every cent you pay.
By far, one of the best places in Winnipeg.

My favorite's other then the most popular dishes are Fish Fillet & Aubergine (Eggplants), Miki Bihon and Cripsy Chicken.

(p.s. The kitchen is kept spotless, I know that health inspectors eat here.)
Westfoodie
hands down the best Filipino cuisine in town. very authentic foods just like in the Philippines! recommended to everyone I know and they all agree it's a 10/10! must try: kaldereta and sisig me and my family crave it all the time!

Tonight I chose Rice Bowl for my birthday dinner with my family. We shared pad Thai, coconut beef, Shanghai curry shrimp noodles, honey garlic chicken, lumpia, calamari, and wonton soup. Everything came out hot, fresh, and fast enough, but not so fast that I thought things were not prepared properly. We enjoyed everything. My favorites are the coconut beef, and the Shanghai curry shrimp noodles.
RMDiv
One of my favorite Filipino restaurants in the city. I had the BBQ ribs and it was so good! Tender- meat falling off the bones. I like the soy- lemon grass marinade. The place is clean. A bit pricier than other Filipino restaurants but it's worth it.
Taray Forever
I ordered the combo Lechon-Kawali//Rice. The fried rice was alright,
but the lechon-kawali was overdone. I could hardly bite into the meat part. There's
hardly any meat to bite on after you get through, because
it was overfried.

I will not be coming back. The service was awful too. The staff was
not friendly.

Thanks but no thanks.

Full of flavour. This is, by far, one of the best restaurants in Winnipeg. The food is absolutely delicious and full of flavour. You can't go wrong with coconut beef. The beef is really tender and the sauce is delicious. I've had the pork and beef barbeques and both are good. There hasn't been a dish that I didn't like. You can really tell that the dishes are cooked with passion. Portions are huge as well. All of the ones I've had are nothing like you have at any Asian restaurants.

The place is decent and appears to be clean from plain view. Nothing special about the decor or service. You forget about all of that once you get to taste the food though.

-----15 May, 2015-----

Coconut Beef. Very tasty dish
Suatlin63
Warm, home cooked meals to your heart's delight. Great ambiance, friendly staff. I have been a customer since 2007 and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the restaurant to anybody looking for fresh, home cook meals. If they ever raise the price, I would still go there because it is the excellent service that I get.
Merry Christmas!!!

Food is good the price is way too much!. My family and I went there for the weekend of customers telling about the review it's pretty shocking how the prices on this restaurant cost 3 items for $40. If you're an average family like me I wouldn't recommend it anything else is good but not great.
Peaceandlove
Great little spot.. They have a variety of south east asian and chinese dishes. My favorite is the caldaret which, is a stewed beef dish with carrots and potatoes. Also the hot and sour soup is really good. The place is clean and the staff is very friendly.
Myron
Ordered several dishes from them thru Mobile. Was very impressed. All the dishes had tons of flavour, but all very different. Fresh tasting ingredients. Tried the pad thai(delicious), Kung pao chicken( nice and spicy with fresh spicy peppers), and coconut beef( fall apart beef). Will definitely try again!

Great Food. But small portions for take out.I was very disappointed with the portion sizes.

Under - rated Gem. Recommended - Lumpia, Satay, Kung Po chicken and coconut beef.
This restaurant offered the best in fillipino and vietnamese dishes with a flavouring of Thai here and there. I've had many dishes off their new and old menu and it never disappoints. Service is always good no matter how busy it gets there the food is aways hot, delicious and fresh.

Awesome overall Menu. All of the items I've had at the rice bowl have been good. Ive been there a number of time. I recommend the kung po ckicken or the beef rib dish, my personal favs. There fried rice is better than most and their suid app is unique and one of the best in the city. Go there!

This place is a family favourite. The service is good and very friendly. Cuisine style is Chinese Philippino blend which is always great and portions are large. We always have leftovers to take home if we order 1 dish per person. Highly recommended!
Garth
Uh uh good. The service and food have always been excellent. The Ribs, Coconut Beef etc are all reasons to give the rice bowl a visit.

Wow. I am not adventurous when it comes to food so when my friends took me to the Rice Bowl I was less that enthused. We started with the Lumpia, then had the stew (the tenderest meat I have ever had) and had the Satay which was spiced perfectly. I went from apprehensive to someone who takes other people there so they can have the experience I had. Not the best area of town, the decore is clean but modest and the servers are friendly but not perfect. None of these matter if it is the food you are after and if that is the case, give it a try. BTW - I do not care for fish but I read the menu and ask questions if I am not sure and I have found lots of good food that agrees with the palat of a nin fish lover.
Fo
Overpriced. Especially their pork sisig. You can get an equally good tasting sisig somewhere else for a cheaper price.

Mmmm very yummy filipino , chinese foods! Try their beef with coconut it was delish! Now im craving for one

Overrated. We just had lunch. Maybe we had the wrong things (20, 29) but they were below average. Price were generous but the portions of meat or shrimp were not. Suspect the owner has friends talking this place up on this broad. The service was good and the place was full of Asians so maybe we just chose the wrong dishes. But we will go elsewhere before we come back here. Verdict B-minus

This is one of my favorite places in the city. All dishes I've had have been excellent, some are more daring and some are more reserved, but all are delicious. Huge portions and very reasonable prices. Service may occasionally suffer from cultural differences but it's always been friendly and welcoming.
David Schlaikjr
I cannot stress enough how good this place is. Everything is great. Noodles, curries and if you feel adventurous you won't be disappointed. Pork belly shrimp with heads on and some many good tasty treats.

My friends and I wanted to eat and one of them suggested this restaurant. Heard decent reviews but the food wasn't great. The service was even worse. We weren't even done our meal yet and they "asked" us to move tables to accommodate a party of 15. Even though we expressed annoyance, they proceeded to move our plates. Then not even finished yet again they cleared all the dirty dishes within 5 minutes of sitting there. I'm never coming back here.
Patbingsu
Delicious!. I'll be back again soon! The portions were huge, and the prices were right.

We ordered two beef choices: satay and a thinly sliced Filipino dish. We'll probably branch out a little more next time. The satay was really spicy-- lots of fantastic flavours. I can't wait to try more.

Tasty food!. We walked to Black Sheep but it was full and we had a 15 min wait. So we decided to walk west on Ellice thinking we were bond to find an open restaurant on a Sunday at around noon. Finally went north on to Sargent and we found THE RICE BOWL. The outside seemed modest the inside was redecorated however it was looking tired. The service was friendly the food took awhile but OMG we were impressed with the spicing and the portions. We were full on the Spicy Seafood Soup and had to have our Vera's Chicken Pad Thai and Vera's Shrimp Pad Thai for supper that day and lunch the following day. These dishes are all under $10 The walk home was lovely so many beautiful murals to enjoy. We will walk to The Rice Bowl again for sure.

Food is pretty good. Definitely try the calamari, it comes with a great dipping sauce you cant get anywhere else. Don't forget to try the deep fried crispy chow main. The prices are more than fair and service is friendly and efficient!

OMG. I went with a friend. We ordered two appitizers. The pork spring rolls and the sweet potato fries. For main courses, he had the fried steak (with rice and stir fried veggies) and the shrimp and squid noodle something or other. number 24. The amounts were huge. Appitizers were not requited. I loved the fries, and especially the sauce it came from. The spring rolls were the size of a mans thumb but there were about 15-18 of them. I didn't have any of the steak but my companian devoured it even though he swore he was going to get a doggie bag. I was stuffed but I'm eating the leftovers now and it even tastes like heaven in the microwave. Everything was $10.00 or under and they have over 40 dishes to choose from. Very very clean. LOVED EVERY THING ABOUT IT.

Good Filipino Dishes. The Rice Bowl is a small restaurant; the interior is clean with a few modern touches.

The deep fried "Lumpia Shanghai" (Filipino spring rolls) are filled with ground pork, onions, carrots, seasonings and is served with a sweet chili sauce. The rolls are smaller in diameter than other types of spring rolls so it made for a nice starter dish. The rolls were crisp and the fillings were nicely seasoned.

I ordered the deluxe pho from the small Vietnamese section of the menu. I'm a huge fan of pho but this one didn't really do it for me. The broth was rather bland and unusually oily.

So the Vietnamese section of the menu wasn't as successful but the Filipino dishes were great!

The beef "Caldereta" is a popular Filipino beef stew with vegetables. The beef was very tender and the sauce was delicious albeit a tad salty so be sure to eat it with lots of rice. This a great comfort dish on a cold day.

The beef "Kare Kare" is a rich stew of ox tail and beef with a vegetables in a peanut base sauce. This dish is served with salted shrimp paste on the side which adds a great contrast in taste (maybe not for everyone but you can always skip the shrimp paste).

Open Tues-Sunday 11 am to 9 pm. The portion sizes are generous and the prices are quite reasonable as most dishes range from $7-$12. I'd go back but I'd stick with the Filipino dishes; if you want pho, there's a number of Vietnamese restaurants in the Sargent area for that.

Mmmm, ribs. A great place for lunch, amasing portions at super low prices..
the rack of pork ribs are amasing, a full 8 bone rack with the short ribs still attatched!!! a pork lovers dream at only 10 bucks....gotta see them to believe

Rice Bowl Restaurant is one of those places we have always heard about, but never actually tried for ourselves. This restaurant is located on Sargent Avenue and we went late enough at night to get a good parking spot, but we could definitely see parking being an issue here! Upon entering Rice Bowl, nothing immediately wows on the décor front, but that lends towards the casual atmosphere this place gives off and we didn’t mind at all. The music however, is pretty loud; Rihanna and Justin Bieber hits drowned our conversations at first but it wasn

These servings are HUGE. Seriously, we will be eating leftovers for at least 2 days. I'm not complaining, I love leftovers, but just sayin'
