Review Spring Roll Restaurant - Winnipeg

Plant Power
My husband and I love the vegetarian menu here, our favourite in Winnipeg. The owner is very nice and great service. Our favourite dishes are the deep fried mushrooms, wontons with chilli garlic sauce, deluxe wonton soup, vegetarian beef with ginger and onions, deep fried chow mein. Never disappoints!

A small but GREAT Chinese restaurant. I had take put for the first time on this occasion. Previously have always ate inside. The food is excellent. The staff are very courteous. I have only chosen from their luncheon menu and would definitely recommend you try anyone of the luncheon selections......enjoy!

I’ve been going to spring roll for years, & their lunch special went from 6.95 to 8.50, and they serve only vegetable (mostly cabbage) as the side, no more beef strips. Less food for a higher price? Other than that, all the food I’ve ordered, lunch & dinner has been excellent. Always double check your order when picking up.

Had this delivered, came in a box inside of a filthy foam container. They use the same breading for all their fried pork, chicken and beef so they all taste the same. Food was one of the worst Chinese we’ve ever eaten. And at $80 for 5 items was expensive for something that is barely edible. The one star is for the owner who was very friendly.

Nothing bad to say! All good and yummy! The owner is hands on and nice too. Definitely will come back.

Wow, you've got us as returning customers!! Legit I can't think of the last time ordering out where the food amazing, and the portions were huge!! This place has nailed it on the head, great price, awesome food, and awesome portions The staff was kind and very polite. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking, you won't be disappointed.

We ordered a few dishes, one was #97 Ginger Beef. It was actually pork loins with soya sauce.

A friend took me here a few days ago and I loved the lunch combos. I had the honey garlic chicken combo. Then came the next day for lunch with another friend because I had to share with her about this place since she also didn't know about it. Had the lemon chicken combo. Came with either wonton or consomme soup. Very inexpensive and service is fast. Food came out quick. Food was hot. Great discovery!

You can’t go wrong with the daily lunch special at this hidden gem... It comes with wonton or consommé soup, portion size is appropriate for larger appetites, and service is super fast over the lunch hour. Good food at a great price.

Quick food, polite phone manners and good service. The location is super plain with no decorations but if you are just picking up food who needs em? Definitely would order from here again.

Delicious with a huge vegetarian menu. Not only is the food amazing (personal favourite is the 8 treasures) but the owners are incredibly kind and personable.

Every time I dine here, with or without companions, I'm always satisfied with my order. I always look forward to eating here. So far I haven't been here for my birthday but that'll change soon.

The owners are always so friendly and accommodating. The first time I came here I didn't realize they closed at 9pm and they offered to stay open for us! I always order delivery and everything I've had has been amazing. Best. Wonton dumplings EVER. Ever!!! Lemon chicken is amazing too, all of the vegetarian dishes are wonderful. The chow mein dishes are wonderful. I have never had a bad meal here.

We just ate a fantastic meal at Spring roll! From the hot and sour soup to the lemon chicken, there was not a bad bite to be had. While the food was great there were a few issues. Service was a little slow at first and dishes trickled out. We were almost finished our meal when the mushrooms in spicy salt made it to the table. The biggest surprise came when the bill came and a litre of house wine was $44! Ouch!
So, I can recommend the food as wonderful. Be warned, wine comes with a hefty price tag.

Worst overpriced food ever! The online menu is not updated and prices are way higher than listed. I'd rather eat food court Chinese food. Never, ever again!

We came here for dinner at around 6-7pm on a Saturday night. There wasn't another table in the whole restaurant! Eventually, more people came in as we were finishing up.

We started browsing the menu, we couldn't decide and probably took about 5 minutes to choose. It wasn't easy to with the female server walking back and forth from the kitchen, to our table over and over again asking if we were finally ready yet! We started with ordering 2 medium bowls of hot and sour soup, and a few spring rolls knowing they were pretty big. The server looked at us with disdain and said "That's IT? Are you SURE..?" It made us question if we did order enough so we decided to get an order of ginger beef too.

The spring rolls are SO CRAPPY. I could get better spring rolls at Sobeys in the frozen section. It's just a roll full of steaming hot cabbage, nothing else. The hot and sour soup is very good, and the medium was way too big for me, I definitely could have gotten a small and a spring roll and it would have been good enough for me. The ginger beef was really weird, and not what you would expect from a restaurant at all. It was thin, steak like patties battered and fried, drizzled with a brown sauce and topped with shredded ginger pieces. It was alright.

All in all, I've had good meals here at lunch but dinner was a ghost town. It was weird eating in a restaurant with no one else in it, and having the server lady be obsessive and rude to us. The food was decent but I'll try someplace else next time

Excellent Chinese food and plenty of it. The best Lemon Chicken ever!!! Got my sister-in-law ordering from here now too. My neighbour introduced me earlier this year and now this is a nice close big time favourite. Food is excellent and lots to eat. Lemon chicken is fabulous with 3 chicken breasts!!! in order. Everything is very good.

Disappointing and Dirty. Stopped by recently for lunch and was disappointed with the quality of the food and the lack of cleanliness in this restaurant. In keeping with its name, Spring Roll offers seven different kinds of spring rolls which are tasty but are made with frozen vegetables. In fact, all of the dishes we ordered were made with previously frozen vegetables. You can just tell. They are rubbery in texture and full of water. The "hot and sour soup" was not like others I have tasted - thick, grizzly bits of pork, more sour than hot, and so "gummy" you need a fork to eat it. The lemon chicken and chop suey were bland. The consomme soup tasted like plain beef broth with some onions and rice tossed in. The restaurant also is in need of a good cleaning and some renovations. The bathroom is located in the basement down a flight of very steep, very narrow steps. This is an accident waiting to happen, especially for someone elderly or with poor balance. The bathrooms themselves are filthy and the doors don't lock. There are plenty of Chinese restaurants in this city with delicious food and good value. Don't waste your time here.

I love this place!!!!. I have worked in the area for 32 years and have been going to Spring Roll all along.....the staff (I suspect the owners) are terrific!
always a friendly smile and a warm greeting. Although the atmosphere is a bit shabby the food is always plentiful, quick, hot and delicious. I feel welcome here, almost like family. If you are looking to pay high prices, and have a very fancy decor this is not the place - but good food and honest people you won't be dissapointed.

Lemon Chicken. Big piece of chicken breast with thin crispy breading toped with lemony sauce

Love the food!. Great selection, the food was very good, great service. My favourite dishes are the lemon chicken, tofu with spicy salt, the Chinese mushrooms, and wanton soup. Very generous portions and reasonably priced. The restaurant is clean and pleasant atmosphere.

Doesn't like it. Although the food was tasty, I unfortunately lost my appetite after seeing the condition of the restaurant. There was an inch if not more of dust scattered all over the curtains, drapes, and hanging off the lamps. The tablecloth was very dirty, and the bathroom...well you have no privacy as the doors dont close, and it was very dirty. I couldnt imagine what the kitchen must look like.

Highly Recommended! Amazing food!. Just an awesome restaurant, come here all the time for lunch, also brought my parents here for dinner on Saturday, my mom eats vegan and my dad loves his meat, so Spring Roll was the perfect place to bring them to! Location: North west of the city, easy parking on the street
Ambiance: Clean and pleasant
Service: Great service, super friendly staff, the owner seems to remember their customers which is great.
Food Quality: Excellent
Food Quantity: Huge.. (try the lemon chicken, and ginger beef)
Restrooms: Clean, it's downstairs
Delivery: Quick, and easy, usually arrives in 30-40 mins
Value for Money (VFM): 9/10
Overall Experience: Hugely Satisfying

Terrible Service. My wife and i went to eat there one cold, Saturday night and we sat down and waited to be served. Well, we were not acknowledged, we waited and waited and after 20 somewhat minutes we got up and left!
I am not too sure Why there are some Asian restaurants in the city that "magically" expect to stay in business when they treat customers this way? I would highly NOT recommend anybody go and spend a single penny in this place; unless you like terrible service of course.

Great Selection. I am currently eating vegan, which makes it considerably harder to dine out as much as I used to. However, I had heard good things about Spring Roll offering Chinese food in both meat and vegan options, making it a good place to go with our meat-loving friends. On a Saturday night at 8, the place was empty and we were seated quickly. Don't be worried about the rough outside of the restaurant, it is clean and simple inside.
My bf and I ordered the Thai-style Tofu, Vegetable Chow Mein, and Fake "chicken" with Ginger and Garlic. The dishes appeared as soon as they were ready, roughly 5-10minutes apart from one another so I found myself eating each item separately rather than combined on my plate. The noodles came out first. Noodles the size of spaghetti were mixed with cabbage, onions, and some greens in a salty soy-based sauce. My bf and I both enjoyed the dish although I found it slightly too salty for my taste (I hardly eat any salt). Next came the tofu, which was by far my favorite dish. Big chunks of deep fried tofu in a thin, sweet, sour, spicy sauce. The dish came surrounded by broccoli and was incredibly enjoyable, the flavor was great. Lastly, we received our fake meat that was in a flavorful sauce mixed with onion, green onion, and ginger. The dish was spicy because well, when they say "ginger" they mean GINGER. HUGE pieces of fresh ginger were scattered throughout the dish. I love ginger, but when you bite into a piece of fresh ginger, prepare for your mouth to be on fire. Our meals overall were super enjoyable and we left with much leftover, leaving me very impressed. Our friends who ordered all meat options also received huge portions and were satisfied with their meals. The one complaint was that they ordered spring rolls, which came with a bottle of plum sauce to use. Then they ordered "sweet and sour chicken balls", which were brought out sauce-less and they were told to use the plum sauce. When my friend questioned it, she said that the plum sauce and sweet and sour were the same. Other than that, no other issues, and service was good.
Will definitely return here in the future to try more of their vegan menu. Both vegan and regular menus are large, so there should be something for everyone to enjoy!

One of my favourites in the city. They do vegan Chinese food right. My favourite dish is the deep fried breaded Vegan Shrimp, which I order with spicy salt. Great service (tip big!), easy parking and a massive menu. Vegan and non-vegan options available, along with great lunch specials. Hours are just as reasonable as the prices. An open, yet quiet, atmosphere. Plenty of non soda options and knowledgable servers. Worth the drive out! They also do take out & delivery, and are super quick.

First time trying this place and very disappointed. $45.00 order and didn't get any rice with my order. I called the restaurant and they told me I need to ask ahead of time. The dry breaded veal was terrible and so was the chicken chop suey. They do give you a good portion of chicken in the chicken balls but the sweet n sour sauce came on the side and was ice cold. Delivery was quick, about 40 min at 5:15 which is very fair in my opinion but that could be because they aren't busy due to the over all food being poor. I'll pass on this place in the future.

20 years and counting.... I have been going to Spring Roll for over 20 years and can honestly say I've never been disappointed. The won ton soup (and the actual won ton's) are some of the best I've ever tasted. The Lemon Chicken is superb. Every dish I've ever had has been at least decent if not excellent. Staff is friendly and helpful. Well worth a try!!!

Dont miss out on this place. You would be a fool to not try this place. Great food. I ordered it for delivery and man it was fast. the food was hot and the delivery guy is really nice. they have a web site and there menu is on it. don't be fooled by the daily specials . Just look up to the right top for the link to dinner and the whole menu. Write your numbers down for each dish call them and order. Simple as that. what did i order? well i ordered the breaded veal the breaded ribs and chow mien chicken balls and Cantonese rice. Every thing was awesome. also i heard that they don't use MSG. everything is fresh and i believe it. I will never order from another Chinese place unless i move to far for them to deliver. come on peeps support family businesses like this one . they deserve your business and your palate deserves a treat.

Even better the next day. This is a Chinese food restaurant but they have a seperate vegetarian/vegan menu which impressed me even though i am not vegetarian. I went with friends and i will be honest, i have very limited experiance in Chinese food so i cant even name or remember the names of the dishes that we all shared but i do know i loved it. In fact i took home half of it and ate the rest the next day and it was even better. The staff was courtesy and very attentive. The portions of food were gigantic. If my friends ever invite me back i will go for sure.

Simply one of the best soup and lunch dives in town.. Lunch specials at under 6 bucks are one thing.
But you can clearly take half home and make another meal out it.
Each day a different special.
But I go for the soups.
No matter what kind of soup it is all really good.
A medium deluxe wonton is ample for 2 to share.
Add a couple of their really delicious spring rolls (shrimp and pea) my fav.
But chicken or veggy or beef, they are all good.
They have an extensive vegetarian menu... and their home made beef noodles are definately worth the try. (Hope your like pepper) if not ask them
to back it off abit.

If you are in the neighbourhood for lunch be prepared to wait a bit, but do so, you won't be disappointed.
Supper time is far less busy. The specials are not available.
Lemon chicken is outstanding.
The house special veggies and all the food groups are great.
I'm not an MSG fan, they use it sparingly, but have no problem sans MSG.

I eat a quick lunch there at least once a week.
Great Value, Good Food, and plenty of it.

WORST SERVICE EVER.....we ordered at 5:30 and were told an hour at 6:47 we called to find out where our food was. Another 15 minutes away. No apology. No offer of compensation. I told them it was a birthday supper and people, including children were waiting and they said 10% off and 15 more minutes. They said no one told them it was a birthday and hung up. BRUTAL.

Best local lunch spot. Try either the large deluxe wonton soup or the spicy chicken lunch special. As mentioned, not gourmet but very tasty and cheap. I eat lunch there 2-3 times per month. Service is very friendly and food comes quickly.
John Kane
Big cheap lunch specials. Not gourmet but good enough when you're hungry and I really enjoyed the wonton soup
Hungryman Diner
Terrible experience. The fried rice was lumpy, greasy and awful. I don't actually remember any positive aspect of this meal other than the recommendation was very ardent. DO NOT order the ginger beef. It is a joke. It is flaps of questionable beef battered in some kind of pumpkin pie mix. DO NOT order the ginger beef.

Amazing food and friendly service! I rarely write reviews but the food was just that good. I heard about this place from many colleagues and the take outs they get for lunch always looked so appetizing, so I decided to give it a try. I was very pleased, tasty wonton soup, and one of the best lemon chickens in town! This place gets busy at lunch fast, so call ahead for reservations or try to beat the rush! My gf is also a fan of their vegetarian menu. Definitely would recommend it if you love Chinese food.

Disappointing. After trying all the vegetarian/ vegan options I've heard of in the city and having mostly positive experiences I was quite pleased to find this place and its separate vegetarian menu. After looking past all the spelling mistakes on the menu I saw a lot of great choices I couldn't wait to try. I was very disappointed. The gluten balls are not even balls, they are more like patties and the choice of sweet and sour or ginger sounds great but the sauce comes on the side and tastes very processed as if squirted from a bottle into a plastic cup. The hot and sour soup tasted so hot and so 'off'' from what a hot and sour soup should be that I did not even bother TRYING to finish mine. The dried ribs had the exact same breading as the gluten 'balls' and again the sauce was awful. I will not order from this place ever again.

Was dirty. My heart is broken. I think I might have cried. I loved your sweet lemon chicken with wonton soup and vietnamese roll. Everything seemed fresh to order. Although you did seem pretty filty, now I know it is true. I am very sad that I cannot go back here and i have been going to Spring roll for 15 years.

http://www.winnipeg.ca/cms/ehs/food/pdfs/Closures.pdf

Best take-out!!. This restaurant has been my go-to for Chinese for about a year. I highly recommend the Chicken Balls...so good and all chicken with light breading, also the sweet and sour sauce is great! Also a must try is the Crunchy Jumbo Shrimp. After a year I have only had one occasion where I was disappointed and that was a combo..the plain fried rice is crappy...but the Cantonese fried rice is amazing!
Marnie
One of the tastiest places in town. I ordered from this place today and it was awesome ...i only ordered some combo plates but the food was great...we loved the sesame chicken and the spring rolls were huge and they came with great homemade plum sauce.....so rare theese days.....i will be calling back for delivery as the food was great and the service was great as well,

Great vegetarian menu. Garlic chili wontons, peanut tofu and veggie deep fried shrimp are all great! The owners are wonderful and they deliver.
Jennifer Lariviere Bellino
Lemon Chicken. The lemon chicken is the best in the city. A must have item every time we order!
Naomi
Decent. This place is nice, because they have a separate vegetarian menu, and tasty food. However, I had one bad experience.... When ordering take out, I clearly stated everything had to be vegetarian. I ordered several of the vegetarian spring rolls, and one ended up containing shrimp.
