We went for brunch yesterday at Southdale. First time there. The decor is very nice. Clean and “informally classy”. A place in which you’d be comfortable. Smartly decorated. I guess, maybe I was expecting more of an older diner atmosphere, or something, from the name. The staff members were amazing, we were greeted and seated, then talked to by about 3 of the staff members during or time there. Not intrusive in the least, just friendly. I had iced tea, looked up, and there was a “refill” already on its way before I was finished, and served with a smile. The food was prepared quickly and served hot. A couple of minutes later, our sever checked that all was ok, I joked I just tried the toast so far, so in a few more moments she, in a playful way, “checked” again how I was doing with the main dish. Ok, now about the food. Very tasty! My wife had a club sandwich - real turkey- served with crisp (but not over done / greasy) hot French fries (of course I had to try some). I had the Mexican skillet - delicious. Mexican seasoned ground beef, scrambled eggs, sour cream and salsa served on a bed of what I’m assuming are “home made” pan fries. Mmmm mm. Think sort of like breakfast nachos if you’re into that kind of thing, and I am! The ground beef was nicely spiced and teamed with the salsa added a nice “pop”to the flavours of the egg and potatoes. It’s been said “you eat with your eyes first”, and on that note, everything was plated and presented in a pleasant way. We saw a few more dishes come from the kitchen destined for other tables, and each of those looked vey nice as well. I’d totally recommend this place. It seems to me that they take great pride in their business. We noted certificates in the entrance way that, to us anyway, prove that. The appearance, the staff, and the food all make this a worthwhile place for you to try. Enjoy!
Went for breakfast this morning everything was delicious and came out very fast despite the restaurant being full. I find some breakfast places overly greasy/oily food and theirs was neither. Our waitress was very attentive keeping our coffee full throughout our stay.
A great place for comfort food - soups and sandwiches are reliably tasty. All of the soups I've tried here have been hearty and delicious. The clubhouse is excellent - real roasted turkey breast, none of that awful deli-type stuff. Tried the spaghetti once, which wasn't bad but a bit on the bland side. Consistently wonderful service from staff who truly seem to care about pleasing their customers - not so easy to find these days.
I very much enjoyed my classic breakfast this morning: two eggs, two pieces of toast, shredded hash browns, and three sausage links. The portion was large and thus quite filling - 5 hours later and I haven't needed to eat anything else! It was also reasonably priced, considering how much food there was and its good quality. Although the place was packed, the servers were very attentive and kept checking in at our table to see if we needed anything and refilling my friend's coffee. I would definitely return for another meal!
Amazing breakfast and the staff is always friendly. They come around with the coffee on a regular basis and don't push you out :) I've never gone for dinner or lunch so I can't comment on other meals
Great place for diners with differing food preferences. The enormous list of sides, from which you get to choose three, makes this place a perfect place when dining with a mix of ages and tastes, from the health conscious diner, to the meat and potatoes guy, this place has a selection for everyone. Busy place though. There is never a long wait, but wait you often must. I think the longest I've waited is maybe 10 minutes. I go here frequently with my young adult daughters, although the place is a real magnet for the 55+ crowd.
Good grub GREAT soups. If you love great hearty homemade soups then this is the place for you. No matter where I am in Winnipeg my mind always goes to this great restaurant especially during our cold winters when you want something hot and comforting their soups can't be beat!!!
My fav spot to eat!. This place is a hidden gem right in Southdale. It's one of the only places where I enjoy eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They make a homemade soup everyday which is always to die for. I have yet to try something on the menu I haven't enjoyed. My favorite part is that everything tastes like good home cooking.

I have been coming to this Resturant for years, I noticed a negitive review below and felt obligated to defend this hidden gem. If you look at this persons sentence structure and vocabulary it's easy to tell that they're review may be valid however it's not to be taken seriously. This person clearly had a bad experience, but it was pure ignorance on there behalf that escalated the problem. It's sad but more often then not, people won't comment on good experiences because they always expect good experiences. It's always a bad experience that breaks out the comment cards.
This Resturant is like I said earlier, a hidden Gem. You will not be disappointed in the food or service when dineing here. The staff are all well trained and increadibly friendly. You will always see the owner busting his butt helping out the staff during busy hours. It's clear to see this place is well managed and organized.
All wholesome homemade food that started out from ingredients NOT from a pre-packaged bag. (Aside from the fries. They are in fact the frozen kind from a bag however they are still quite delusions). If the frozen pre bagged fries are such a problem for someone they also have the pan fries option that I personally always go with. You really can't go wrong with there menus. The homemade soups are always amazing. One of the cooks in the back makes them fresh everyday.
Portions are HUGE and always comes with many options for sides. Never left this place hungry. Usually uncomfortably full when leaving this Resturant. And with all that said, you get all of this great service, good food and staff for the measly price that they charge for it. Considering the size of the portions, the prices seem very low.
I will continue to bring my family and friends to this Resturant for many years to come. We absolutely love it here.

Best Comfort Food in the City...Great Service. Went with my family in the evening of October 5th. Everyone loved their meals. I had the hot turkey sandwich with fries delicious!! Real turkey and came to the table piping hot. My kids loved their pasta and cleaned their plates, which is unusual for a couple of picky eaters. Great service, right from the moment we came in. A friendly smile from our hostess and our server who was very attentive but not hovering. Coffee was offered at regular intervals and when my kids made a bit of a mess, the hostess came by quickly, was really sweet and helpful and gave me extra napkins.
The one thing I should say is that I felt really bad for the staff because of another table of customers. There was a family of grandparents, mom and dad and kids. They were very loud and quite rude to the staff, demanding the high chair and then not using it but leaving it in the way so people had to step around it. They were quite disruptive to the rest of us enjoying our meal. When they were leaving the women were bullying the cashier, demanding a discount. It appeared they might have been using an expired coupon and they were raising their voices for no apparent reason. The manager came and dealt with them and was far too nice. We were glad to see them go.
Despite that, because it takes all kinds, I would recommend this restaurant 100%! Delicious food and wonderful service.
Great Dinner! Really reasonable prices, will go again. Took my family for dinner Saturday night as we have heard some good reviews. Food was absolutely amazing. Portions were plentiful, food was very flavorful and piping hot when it got to our table. Dinners came with a choice of 3 sides which is unheard of. As for pricing, it was a real surprise......don't know where else you can take a family of 4 out for dinner, including beverages that are bottomless for like $80. Will visit again and next time hopefully I will have room for desert!
Exceptional customer service. Fast effective and friendly. The food was great, no complaints. Busy at times and might have to wait but its well worth it.

Excellent Breakfast and Lunch. Had the classic breakfast which was awesome. Real food not factory food like the chains. Also had the Beef Quesadilla which actually had real beef. They were happy to offer the breakfast and lunch menus at the same time. Taste of everything was awesome, service was great even though restaurant was packed with a line-up at the door at 10:30 AM on a Saturday. This place is worth driving across town for. Congrats to the owners!
This restaurant has very good food and excellent customer service. They have daily soups and they are all incredible. The place is always busy but you never have to wait long for your meal. Definitely recommend it.
One of my regular stops!. Though the decor perhaps leaves something to be desired, I am a frequent visitor of the Southdale Family Restaurant because of the quality food and great service. The soups are delicious and are always changing. Try the Dill Pickle soup sometime - it's SO good. The servers are always friendly and attentive, even if the place is busy, which it usually is. I've never had a bad experience there.

Great place. We were at Southdale village for Sunday lunch. Had a great time. Our waitress was great. It was fast friendly service. We had a party of 7 people, and they were able to acommadate us without a reservation. Food was really good. Some of us had lunch, and some had breakfast. Large portions. We will definitely go back. We were not disappointed.

Pleasant surprise, a diamond in the rough. I have been here a few times now and I have to say that I am always pleasantly surprised by it. It's so unexpected that this small family restaurant is as good as it is because from the looks of it you just wouldn't think that it could be better than some of the chain family restaurants in the city.
The portions are always huge, they use real ingredients that don't appear to be processed. When you order a chicken sandwich they practically put an entire chicken breast in there. For dinner entrees they let you pick 3 different sides which are all equally nice in size and quality.
The best thing about this place is the soup though. I've tried several of their daily soups and loved every one of them.
The service is always extremely friendly and courteous and it really can't be beat.
It's really the only family restaurant that I can't wait to visit again. Forget the larger chain restaurants that really don't put any care of effort in their food. For the price, this place has to be at the top.
Try it out, try the soup, go for lunch and have one of their delicious sandwiches. You won't be disappointed. Don't knock it before you try it!

Food is ok. Restaurant management has no idea how to cope with high volume of customers. 2 waitresses look after all of the tables. One person at the register deals with people paying and putting people's name on the list for seating. The food is consistent which makes this restaurant better than the nearby restaurants like Perkins.

Super Service. I have been here only twice but both times the service has been exceptional. The Homemade Turkey Burger on the menu is interesting as it is not ground turkey but rather real turkey meat that they shred and mix together with seasonings etc, served on a kaiser bun with lettuce, tomato and creamy dill dijon sauce. It was tasty though I wished the burger patty itself had been bigger. Fries were hot and crispy and perfect for dipping into a side of their gravy ! In a past visit I tried the Chicken Ceasar Wrap which I enjoyed too !
Great restaurant. We have been here several times and have never been disappointed! The food has been excellent, portions good and price affordable. We will definitely recommend this restaurant to our friends.
Awesome Burgers!!. I had the Southdale Burger last week and it was awesome. It was a homemade pattie quite large and it tasted great. i had a huge basket of hot fresh fries and washed everything down with a long island ice tea. The serve was fast and very friendly. I highly recommend this little jewel to try out.

*Overall: Will be back. Very good experience here (we went around 11am on a Sunday). Great breakfast spot (the cook knows what he or she is doing).

Great home cooked meals. I have had a chance to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at this restaurant and have never been disappointed. The staff are always friendly and attentive. The fried chicken is phenomenal.
We love going here. Very family friendly restaurant, great service, and decent prices. Something on the menu for everyone.
Atmosphere was great, the food was fabulous. I had the corned beef melt and fries. The social distancing was followed. Staff all wore masks, place was very clean. Sanitizer at door. Will go back for sure or order take out.

The staff is so upbeat and welcoming.
