Just discovered this hidden gem...love the hemp bread! Friendly service too.
The breads are delicious! We love the sourdough options and recommend the sunflower seed variety. They also have some delicious danishes, but you need to arrive early before they inevitably sell out.
My favourite place. I don't care that it takes me an hour to get there. Totally worth it!
I just moved back after 12 years in Australia and was determined to find a good Miche out here. Thanks to the people at the Old Church Bakery stall at the St. Norbert markets, they recommended Sleepy Owl to me and I am oh so grateful! The miche is amazing, my search is over and you'll be seeing me on a regular basis!
Walking into this place you can just smell the goodness. Great bread. Great pastry.
Smells fantastic inside! The bread and treats tasted awesome! Staff is super nice and great to talk to!
Best bread in the city. This mornings line up.
Love,..BEST croissants anywhere...I eat them in my car as I can never wait till I get home. Bread is really good and the lady who is always there is very gracious, always has a kind smile to greet people.
Folks, this may shock those who know me, but, I have to say that there has to be a God, because I have official proof of the existence of heaven. Heaven exists not in the sky, or in space, or in a far off land in a distant universe, but rather, it exists in the form of the Chocolate Babka from Sleepy Owl Bread. This little bakery is excellent, and I hope they stick around in the West End for years to come.
This is by far the best bread we've ever had. Very Friendly & welcoming staff!!!!
Sleepy Owl has the best danishes I've ever had, prepared by some very cute and nice people.
Absolutely the best bakery in the city. Breads are worth every penny!
Love the bread, one of the few bakeries where I do not have trouble with bloating after eating! After several trips to France, I have ended my search trying to find bread that was comparable to what I ate in France! This is bread tastes so amazing! When family from France came to visit, I was very proud to serve them bread made from Sleepy Owl Bakery. The Potato/onion and the Oatmeal Raisin bread OMG!
A hidden gem on Wall Street. Their danishes are to die for. I wish they serve coffee or tea and have a bigger space where you can sit and enjoy their pastries. Nice friendly staff- I presumed she was the owner behind the counter. Parking along the street can be a bit of a challenge. Be back.
Finally stopped in today and bought some danishes. They were absolutely delicious! Everything looked scrumptious. I will definitely be going back!
We would be heartbroken if this place ever closed. By far our favourite bakery in the city. The chocolate babka is out of this world. But be sure to get there early on Saturdays. Once we made the mistake of arriving after lunch and they were pretty much sold out of everything. They are THAT good. Super sweet staff as well. Love!
I'm here 2-3 days a week, for their breads and an assortment of their sweet and savory danishes. Everything is delicious, my only problem is that now I can't buy breads anywhere else; because nothing else compares. Their cheddar-dijon bread makes the world's greatest grilled cheese sandwiches!
Wow! Bought a Rustic Levain bread and a couple of the cherry danishes. The bread is wonderful. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The danish was amazing. Lots of flavor. The only problem I have with this place is that it is a bit of a drive to get here. If I lived close l'd be here every day. Do you need to get your bread from here? Absolutely!! Will I be back? I guess I will be making a lot of long drives to buy my bread.
The shop is small and toasty warm. The two ladies who where working in the shop were cheerful and informative and you could tell everything was fresh, local and delicious!
They have a small selection of breads and pastries but they are all reasonably priced for how good the quality is!
This is a local bakery that is absolutely fabulous. We stopped by before going for lunch and tried a few pastries. OMG! Seriously the best danish I've ever had. I opted for the apple danish and chocolate croissant (?) which were both fluffy, flaky and the perfect amount of sweet. Homemade goodness! The girls working were super friendly and helpful. I just wish there was more selection, but I really can't complain as everything was awesome. TO NOTE: If you're looking to check it out, they will be closing briefly from July 31st - mid August, so definitely check it out in the next two weeks if you've been thinking about going.
You can taste the love. A coworker brought in some danishes from Sleepy Owl and they were so good that I had to go to the bakery myself. I came close to the end of the day and there was still a good selection to choose from. The danishes are $3.50 each, but well worth it. Regardless of the filling, the light, flaky, crisp pastry is what really makes these danishes exceptional, but my personal favorite is the strawberry rhubarb. I tried the pain au chocolat ($3) as well, which is lighter and flakier than the danish, but not as sweet. It was a Wednesday so the special bread of the day was cheddar and mustard, at $5 a loaf. It's delicious on its own, with the mustard seeds adding a pleasant texture and crunch. The Saturday chocolate babka is good if you like dessert bread. Everything was well worth the calories. I'm glad that I don't live close to Sleepy Owl Bread because I would probably gain a lot of weight and be much poorer.
Such yummy desserts. Their chocolate croissants were amazing so fluffy and the chocolate was perfect. Danishes both berry and strawberry are great. Dijon onion is a good savoury balance. Will definitely be back frequently.
The Babka is heavenly!. The chocolate Babka bread is phenomenal! Its chocolaty goodness mixed with a buttery melt in your mouth dough. So worth going on a Saturday to pick this up! (The only day its available). My husband and I couldn't stop nibbling at it! We were in Paris in the summer and it reminded us of the brioche we had while there.Have been twice and their breads are fabulous as well- crusty on the outside and moist in the inside- amazing for toast and sandwiches. A new gem in the city with fresh baked goods which use fresh ingredients (and don't have the preservatives and additives that you find in grocery store baked goods.).
This place has absolutely amazing baked goods.
Delicious. My work had some pastries delivered to us one day from a supplier and to our surprise it came from Sleepy Owl Bread which is located just down the street from us (we never heard of this place before). The box was filled with different flavoured Danishes and croissants. I was able to try their breakfast Danish which was filled with apples and cranberries and topped with oats and walnuts. The Danish was sooooo good. The outer crust was crispy and inside was light and fluffy and you could taste the freshness in it. I decided I wanted to try the Danishes again so I went to their store a couple weeks later. The store is open concept so you can see the bakers baking and the service was really friendly. To my delight they had sweet and savory Danishes, croissants, baguettes and an assortment of different breads. I picked up a pizza Danish and coffee and they did not disappoint. I definitely recommend this place and will be returning.
Heavenly. The loaves of bread here are wonderful, fresh and just the right size, bread should be eaten fresh and I like the manageable sized loaf they offer here, also found that the loaf sizes and the slicer they use fit just fine in the average toaster... which for the most part isn't the case when you buy fresh bread at a bakery in my experience.... sure I can toast it in the oven but it seems thoughtful that they make a product that will fit nicely in my toaster. The danish are the best in the city.... honestly I haven't ever had a better one anywhere, the selection is just enough they have just over a different dozen or so items daily done really really well. This place cares about quality and they put the absolute best into what they have, no cutting corners and it shows. This isn't an eat in place but it's an amazing place to grab a bite on the go with a cup of coffee or pick up a dozen danish for a special brunch. If you haven't given them a try I encourage you to support this local business and drop by. It will be totally worth your time. If you are looking to impress at work bypass the line at Tim's and pick up your morning coffee and office/meeting goodies here. #1 Absolutely faster #2 People will be raving about these pastries all day and likely the following week... as opposed to stale doughnuts which are still hanging around in the box on Monday to haunt you...
I love their bread, especially the one-day-old bread. I recommend visiting them every Friday as they have more options for half off bread and pastries! Really good!
I love fresh baked goods, and on one of my first outings since lockdown I had coffee with an old friend. He told me he had encountered this bakery on Wall street and it had the best croissants he had ever tasted. Now, my friend is not immune to hyperbole, but he is also a world traveler so we visited the place on Friday.
They are not overly large. During covid they are restricting customers to only 2 at a time and there are large shields to protect every one so its fairly comfortable and safe. While we were in there were at least 3 people who opened the door to check if they could come in but everyone politely obeyed the distancing protocols without complaint.
In addition to the croissants, which are indeed among the best I have ever tasted, they have a nice range of breads and buns. I also took home a loaf of whole wheat sourdough and their sunflower sourdough. 3 croissants and the 2 loaves came to $20.00 but they were worth it.
The croissants were flakey and buttery without being crumby, my wife and I warmed them up in a 150 f oven for 10 minutes and had them with fresh coffee the next morning. Devine.
The bread, both loaves, are perfect examples of sourdough. Nice crust and chewy with excellent flavour. We had a couple of slices with a salad for supper and it was an excellent pairing. I cut off the odd shaped ends and cubed them to make croutons. I'm looking forward to toasting the bread for breakfast.
The only negative I can think of is access. I wasn't driving and forgot to check for parking. On street parking is limited, and there is a hydrant near their door. You might want to check out maps or call them about parking, but on the plus side, the sign out front did offer curbside pickup
Best bakery in the neighborhood. Their raspberry and apple danishes are the best I've ever had and their bread is incredible.
I can’t say enough good things about this bakery. It’s the real deal. Levain bread with chewy crust and a open crumb, so perfectly balanced. It’s obvious that a lot of skill and pride go into every batch. It’s an absolute gem.
Best danishes in the city, I recommend the blueberry cream cheese. Friendly, accommodating staff and service. The butter buns are also a must have for any burger or sandwich, just ask the many local restaurants who use them!
Ignore the FAKE 1 star reviews!
Best sourdough bread in Winnipeg hands down! Also - once you have their burger buns, there's no going back to grocery store fare. And their baguettes and danishes are 👌 The only bread bakery you need in your life!
