Review Jc's Tacos & More - Winnipeg

Yogesh Kumar
Nothing but the best, great Mexican food. With Brilliant service( I believe he was the owner) and even the our server was super nice. šŸ˜ Even offered drinks, super humble people. Tried the Chicken Tacos and veggie enchiladas. Hand down the best i have had in such a long time. Definitely, would go back for more. šŸ¤˜ The food was fresh and juicy. Both Tacos and enchiladas were brilliant. Additional Salsa and a little more of sour cream would be great! 10/10 place for mexican food.

Itā€™s Tuesday and I felt like a taco was necessary. Today I stopped at JCā€™s Tacos for lunch. Itā€™s a cute and colourful restaurant. To start I tried the pork tamale. Iā€™ve never had a tamale, but now I understand why people love them. Iā€™ll be back for more. They were so good. For the main we had the chicken enchiladas and the barbacoa trio taco platter. Both were very satisfying and tasty. Both came with Mexican rice and a little side salad. The tacos also came with refried beans. JCā€™s Tacos is a huge step up from your regular taco stand. I highly recommend this restaurant!!

Thought Iā€™d give this restaurant a try considering they have so many good reviews stating it was ā€œauthentic Mexican foodā€- but this is definitely far from it. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and the first red flag for me was their rice. It honestly looked and tasted like Uncle Benā€™s microwaveable rice. The second red flag for me was the chicken inside the enchilada. It was definitely not seasoned or marinated. Overall the food was bland and disappointing. Iā€™ve ate at almost all of the Mexican restaurants located here in Winnipeg, and unfortunately this place is not it. You might as well save a few dollars and go to Taco Bell because thatā€™s what I would compare the quality of their food to.
Costumer Chick
Normally I LOVE JC tacos. The chicken enchiladas are my favourite! I convinced my work to order our lunch from here today and I wouldnā€™t shut up about how excited I was for my chicken enchilada. (My three vegetarian co workers couldnā€™t find an option on the skip app so they ordered from somewhere else. So that was disappointing) I have a mushroom allergy and weā€™ve ordered from here or eaten in well over 30 times without issue. We tell them about it and the food is made accordingly. Unfortunately three bites in a see part of a mushroom. I tear apart the whole enchilada and thereā€™s no more. Itā€™s clearly an accident, but Iā€™m shaking and scared Iā€™m going to go into anaphylactic shock. All my co workers look at the piece of mushroom. Yes, we all agree. Itā€™s a mushroom. You can see the gills in the darker part. One co worker took a tiny nibble. Yes itā€™s a mushroom. Iā€™m not removing the 5th star for that. Accidents happen. Itā€™s how they responded when I called the restaurant that dropped my rating. They flat out argued with me three times that there was no chance there was a mushroom in my enchilada. Next time I suggest you be more sympathetic and apologetic in this situation. I was expecting, ā€œoh my gosh! Iā€™m so sorry! We thought we were careful with your order. Please report it on the skip app.ā€ Instead of telling me the thing right in front of me is impossible. Especially when my life is on the line and Iā€™m scared I might die or have to go to hospital. I was so disappointed. I ended up eating dumb subway instead. I still love their enchiladas, but Iā€™ll be very nervous to eat from here again.

Been here a few times and loved it each time. The photo is our order of 2 enchilada meals, and an order of chips/guac/pico. Delicious! During peak rush hour and dinner hours, the busy Henderson Hwy and one-way street along side the restaurant can make parking a bit of a pain, but it's easily navigated and is definitely a local restaurant worth supporting.

Wowed at JC'S Tacos and More Wow what a great eatery. We went here for Taco Week and we were not disappointed. This was our first time trying JC'S Tacos. We parked on the street just before JC's. This street is one way, please note, the next street is also one way and you can't turn right onto it. We entered from the front but there is a handicapped entrance at the rear. Once inside the staff was super friendly. The star of this trip was the food. These tacos were some of the best food I've ever tried. I loved it all and the green sauce was amazing. Go for Taco Week :) We will be going back.

This is a great place to come and have a taste of Mexico!! Food and service are excellent! Donā€™t forget to get your margarita with your meal!!

JC's Tacos never disappoints. The food is authentically Mexican. You've got to try their homemade fruit juice with in season fruit. Today it was Watermelon and Hibiscus. Delicious!

JCā€™s Tacos and More is a Latin American restaurant located on Henderson Highway, in what was the old Elmwood Post Office. The post office was an Elmwood landmark, that ceased operation around 25 years ago. For a while the building was home to an art gallery, and then JCā€™s Tacos and More opened up about 10 years ago.

The chicken quesadilla was good for first time trying this place. I believed the real owner was the one preparing my food during my visit. He introduced himself and assumed I'll be getting a real authentic Mexican food- lol. Nice friendly staff. Be back when in the area.

Great fresh food, and worth the wait. JC does a great job with all the dishes I have tried so far. Price might be a bit on the high side but you definitely get what you pay for. Decor is awesome and in your face traditional which I enjoyed. Seemed to be a lot of people coming in for take out. Enchilada was huge and stuff with more than we could finish. Food didn't have that overseasoned high sodium "effort" that some places seem to do to have things full of flavour. Simple flavour and ingredients and delicious. I will definitely be back.

I am sorry to say that this place served me the worst "Mexican" food I've ever had. I ordered a plate of nachos, but what I received instead was a gastronomic abomination the likes of which I had never heretofore experienced.Ā

For $12, what I expected to get was a heap of thick, tasty tortilla chips covered in melted, grated cheese and bursting with sliced tomatoes and onions, and a side of spicy salsa. What I got was a pile of cheap, thin, store-bought nachos and processed cheese sauce. That's it. That was all.

I'm not a fan of cilantro, so I made sure to mention that. The server responded that it was the Pico de Gallo which had the cilantro. I figured she meant the Pico de Gallo came as a side, so when she asked if I wanted to exclude it from the meal I said yes. Turns out that Pico de Gallo is all they use to add vegetables to their dishes. No Pico de Gallo, no vegetables. Period. (This applied to their other dishes as well - my friend ordered the taco trio and the only veggies he got were from the Pico de Gallo)

Salsa could have maybe made the nachos somewhat edible, but apparently it was not on the menu. There were an assortment of sauces available, but they were all terribly bland.Ā

But the food was not the only let down. The place was empty, but my friend and I could still barely hear each other thanks to the loud music.Ā

The service was abysmal as well. We were directed to get our own cups of water by the counter, and we were also told to get our own cutlery from a cart on the other side of the restaurant. The aforementioned sauces I had to retrieve from a bucket partly filled with water (I wish I was making that up). And the interac machine was set to prompt me to enter a tip? Are you kidding me?Ā

Regretfully, the only positive thing I can say about my experience there was the fact that the server (and I use the term loosely) was pretty.
Melissa
The only complaint I have is that it seems like we were over charged. Bf got the enchiladas, son got the nachos, I got the sm padillas(might have misspelled that), 2 drinks and 1 beer, all for under $90! We were not expecting that! .. Although, I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant with such super friendly staff, and owner!!! The environment even gives you that Mexican feel! Everything is home made, made with fresh ingredients from the sauces, tortillas, nachos, salsa, and guacamole. The portions are huge so be prepared to walk out with a full belly. Will definitely be back.... but will check the receipt next time.
YelK
Went with the gf. Prices are very misleading. We each ordered a menu item that was $10. Extra for everything. By the time it was totalled with drinks (non-alcoholic) it came to over $40. Food was OK. Not sure what people are talking about with the "huge portions". I normally don't finish a meal, and I ate 30% of my gf's plate because I was left so hungry.
Lyle Chartrand
The atmosphere is vibrant and really has an authentic feel. The staff are pleasant and service is great. The cook even showed me how to make tortillas by hand.

I recommend the tostadas, they were amazing. I will definitely be a repeat customer. Next time you want a real taste of Mexico do not 'run for the border' ... Get to JC Tacos instead; you will not be disappointed
Picky Eater
great experience here! friendly staff! huge portions for the food prices. lots of hot sauce selections. i love their mexican theme restaurant. fresh food made to order. i would come back here again!
Mandeep Brar
Way too pricey for decent food at best, tacos didn't even come with salsa or cheese, I don't even know if salsa was an option. Sauces were unlabelled and very confusing. Much better places with much better prices. Don't waste your time
Jason Hale
Just left ... literally and very disappointed. Very pricey and what Mexican restaurant charges extra for cheese on a burrito? Food was sub par at best, much better food - price and quality - at Burrito Del Rio Dos
John Smith
Make sure you're hungry when you go. Large portions, and amazing food. The service is fast, and they have an excellent selection of beverages.
...
By far the best quesadillas I have ever tasted! The pico is so fresh and full of flavour! They care about giving their food the freshest ingredients possible and it is shown in the flavours of all the dishes. The drinks all make for a great addition to the meal and you cannot go wrong with any flavour! Owners are extremely friendly and truly care about giving their costumers the best Mexican food Winnipeg has to offer!
Rie
Good food! Good service! Pricy, but pretty tasty! Place has a welcoming vibe to it. Visited here for lunch with the fiance, I had the chicken taco salad its got that nice zing to it. Good portion size at least I was able to take some home and eat the rest of it later. Presentation of the food is well presented. Their fresh natural drinks that they make are delicious. I decided to go with the creamy looking one (forgot its name) but it tasted pretty good. Hibiscus is good too - got a sample of the taste. I would go here again when I have extra $$. I would like to try their other menu items, definitely coming back for Cinco De Mayo.
Karen
Just went here for dinner. The owner is super friendly and awesome. The decor is inviting and fun. The food tasted awesome. Great tortillas....not too thick. Except.....holy smokes, the prices are crazy!! Cheese quesadilla and 3 beef tacos for $30?!! Unfortunately, I don't know if I'll be back.
CB
AWESOME! This definitely beats your typical dinner out! Amazing atmosphere of authentic Mexican decor (did you know that those tables and chairs were made and hand painted in Mexico?!). All products available, including beverages and items for purchase in their "pantry" are all from Mexico/Mexican brands.Ā
The restaurant was quiet when we went, but we ordered burritos, and took our seats. The food came out within 7 minutes, was pipping hot, and was delicious!! The burrito portion looked like a small baby... enormous! I highly recommend the avocado-jalapeno aioli sauce available too. The burrito was filled with meat, which is awesome - they didn't skip and just stuff in "fillers" (rice, beans, etc). The plating included some sour cream, salsa, and shredded lettuce to use at your discretion. I could only finish half of my meal, and got the rest for take away... this is the first time that day-old leftovers were just as good as they were fresh!
I enjoyed a lime Jarrito's soda while there, which was amazing also.Ā
Highly recommend, can't wait to go back!
Tbonebutler1975
Wow. I mean it, wow! Food tasted decent but the prices were ridiculous
Mark_laforges
Food. I have ate at the portage location as well as the Henderson location. My wife and I absolutely love the food there. The salsa is home made burrito is awesome with chorizo or chicken or beef. I agree with the others a bit pricy but very good quality food and great taste. The people that are complaining here don't know what Mexican food is and want a fast food price.
Kelly
I agree with other reviews saying it's just way too expensive. How can they charge extra for staple burrito ingredients like cheese? I will make my own "authentic" burritos at home.
Barbeewiebe
Pretty Good...But Too Expensive. People were nice, atmosphere was friendly, food was good, but it was just way too expensive. Standout items are....the chicken quesadilla and the guacamole....both delicious! The beef fajitas "for two" were very odd. There were lots of onions and peppers and mushrooms but not much meat....they gave us six tortillas but we barely had enough meat to make four fajitas...and we had to pay extra for cheese...a lot extra. Tortilla wrappers, for the fajitas, we're likely authentic; however, they were very odd and certainly not what the average Winnipeg consumer is accustomed to. The tortilla for the quesadilla was perfectly typical, but the wrapper on the fajita was some sorta something different that I didn't recognize (nor enjoy).

Had the taco salad and it was ok. The price was not ok. $14
Gary.turner049
Disappointed :(. Was looking forward to a nice lunch with girlfriend but both of us left disappointed. The environment was pleasant and the food, what we had, was very tasty but the price and serving size was not justified. I distain hidden costs and when I ordered the taco trio, I was shocked to find out that cheese as also extra on top of all the add ons.
Girfriend had a sort of taco bowl and provided only 12 chips .... yes.... we counted them... 40 grams of chips...

Given this was our first and only experience, I would not return
Patrick
Has some free range meats, and shud be change 3 $ signs not 2 imo. Ordered an enchilada for 14.99 + tax. Was a bit pricey. Was 3 gals working there. 1 canadian at the till, and was glad to see some authenticity with 2 mexican gals in the kitchen. Menu on the wall says the chicken and pork is free range. Beef apparently is natural, which i'm not sure meant. Asked the gal at the till if the meats were also antibiotic free and fed organic feed. She did not know. I ordered a pork pineapple enchilada for takeout. It looked like beef to me actually because of the darker color of the meat. Ate it pretty fast, not sure if there was pineapples in there actually. Got a coupon for an enchilada for 9.99. Think that should be their regular price on it. If the meat is certified organic then it should be 14.99 imo. Also didn't ask what they mean by the beef is natural vs. the chicken and pork being free range. Should be changed to a rating of $$$ from $$ imo.

Stopped in here one day. Pretty pricey. Extra cost for cheese? Really? Never again. Too many other mexican places around to come back here. Save your time

Just finished my first jc taco meal. Like many other reviews I did have a little sticker shock when it came time to pay, but I figured if the price was high the food quality would match. Maybe I had high expectations going in, but I'm a little disappointed. Had the chicken burrito, quality wise it was a 6/10 but I can't say it wasn't a lot of food so quantity was definitely a 10/10 as I couldn't finish the entire burrito. Atmosphere super welcoming & colourful.
Dabigm
Pricey and Dense Burrito. So I don't have much experience with mexican food but I just ordered takeout from this place. Beef burrito and two papusa's (sic?) came out to about $20.00. The prices weren't posted on their website so I suffered a little sticker shock when I picked up the order and was told the price. But my fault for not asking I suppose. The burrito was the weight of a small, underweight newborn though, so I suppose worth it. A little bland so I'd recommend extra red sauce and as stated previously, I'm no expert in mexican cuisine, but is mayonnaise on burrito's 'authentic'? Seriously, I don't know... Anyways, these are my thoughts.
Tbayer65
Mucho Dinero $$$$$. So-so food at premium prices. How much are chips and salsa? Or chips and guacamole? Like the old saying goes, if you have to ask you can't afford it.
Michelle B
Didn't even place the order. Their online menu is horrible, it shows the items but not the cost of anything. When we did call to find out they were less than helpful. After ordering two TACO platters we were informed that to add cheese was an extra 1.25 each. Needless to say we thanked them for their help and hung up.
Nicole SH
Great Guacamole. When they first opened, the food and people made the price and the wait worth it. Now the food is hit and miss, still pricey and long wait times. One fabulous consistent: the guacamole!
Kaylitaxo
Amazing!!. I have been here a few times now and each times I thoroughly enjoyed myself! I had the tostadas both times and tried a margarita last time. The food is priced very well. The margarita was a little pricy for the small amount but it was the best margarita I've ever had. The food is consistent every time. The tostadas are great and I LOVE the Pico de Gallo. I get extra every time. The real fruit juices are very nice too. The service is friendly but sometimes slow and seems a little unorganized. Overall a nice atmosphere. Last time we went it was very busy and one of the cooks brought out our meals to us and he was very polite and friendly. He even came back to check on us after seeing that the server was busy. When I eat there I feel like I am a family member of the staff. They are very welcoming and sweet!

Went here for the first time wth my mom and thought it was a little pricey but good. Since I liked t the first time, I decided one day to grab a chicken burrito before work (same thing I got the first time). Lettuce in the burrito was soggy and gross by the time I got home (5 minutes TOPS), food was almost cold, and the rice inside the burrito tasted AND looks like Uncle Bens instant minute Spanish rice. Very dissapointed, and haven't been back since. I've had really good Mexican before, unfortunately not in winnipeg.

A big thank you to all the folks at JC Henderson, They did a great job for my bday! Felt like being in Mexico!
Permafull
The food wasn't very good and I was shocked to see that they don't serve nachos. However, I got some watermelon juice that was to die for.

Nice try...but not authentic!. It seems like this restaurant is trying a little too hard. and the worst part is that they have great advertisement, but the foods just not there. Beans are not spectacular, rice is not spectacular. tacos are not spectacular. but the prices ARE spectacularly high. Have only tried the henderson location and was not impressed with the pupussas because they were too thin and the coleslaw had little spice if none at all. Service was ok. Interior is colourful and inviting, but the atmosphere doesn't do wonders for the food. I would go again to this restaurant if the food was better quality and at least slightly less exaggerated prices if i wanted tex-mex or americanized mexican.
Chic31
The restaurant has a lively atmosphere. Bright colours & great tables and chairs!
Has a chicken burrito and their in house hibiscus juice. $20.00 a little pricey but it's not a fast food place so expect to pay more.Nice tender chicken in mild sauce with green pepper & onion all wrapped up in a flour tortilla. Than covered with cheese & creamy sauce. I found it a bit salty. Over all good portion, good taste, & a tad expensive.
Juan
Their food is nothing close to mexican food ,is not tasty ,is not abundant and is expensive ,they use frozen meat and tortillas as well, the only good food is the barbacoa soup wich is made with beef tonge , im not eating there againg !!
Brian Lindgren
Ouch. Too Expensive. Food was good, but wow, I've never paid that much for Mexican Food.
R.K.
Yummy but Pricey. I had the chicken quesidilla and it was very tasty and had tons of filling but I couldn't get over the price! How can you possibly charge that much? The portions are huge but for that much money you could do dinner and a movie and still have change!
Moztov
Was really disappointed with this restaurant. I ordered a chicken burrito. It was a huge portion, but very bland. The pico de gallo should be full of flavor, but I could barely taste the cilantro and they gave so little of it anyway. The building on Henderson is beautiful, bright and cheery. The staff were very friendly. It would seem they are doing everything right except the food, unfortunately. Too bad mercadito Latino moved... Was much better. I would rather go all the way to burrito del rio on river for a much better burrito.
Craig Clark
The own and staff make u feel at home
The food is cook well but not to person but in a group way witch too me does take away but the people make up for it if u in a rush its great and okay too sit in its very close to basic I will go there again soon
Unknown Muncher
Filling but not fulfilling.. I really enjoyed the fresh juice that they had, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was bright and welcoming. The staff were nice, but I'm pretty sure one of them was coming on to my cousin as she passed his papusa over the counter..

The food here was okay. It was definitely filling, and not lacking colour, but the plating made things less convenient. Your tacos come prefilled with meat and cheese, and the rice, lettuce, salsa, sour cream and refitos come laid out on the plate beside it. The barbacoa was kind of dry and chewy. There was not enough sour cream or salsa for 3 tacos. The beans and rice were good though.

For about $20 I felt like I definitely overpaid for my meal, and the rest of the people with me were in aggreeance.

There are other mexican joints I would hit before coming back here.
Ryo
It is not a very good Latin American restaurant. All the food is over priced and most of it is pre-made and either refrigerated of frozen. CafƩ Mercadito Latino is a much better place to eat and is better priced.
Laura A Warren
Marvin and his staff at J.C.'s never fail to deliver fresh authentic Mexican cuisine with a flair sadly lacking in Winnipeg thus far. Their food is beyond compare, and their guacamole is to die for! Food of this quality is pricier than the chain restaurants, but well worth every penny!
Cynthia Vigini
What happened to this great restaurant?. We use to order from here all the time, it's been awhile and I had a craving for some of their delicious food. The food was tasty but hardly worth $70 for 1 Burrito, 2 small half size Quesadillas with barely any chicken or cheese in it, when you bit into some parts it was only shell, a few Pupusas, Guacamole, Taco Chips and Salsa. My husband also witnessed them being unkind to their staff a definite NONO!!! I won't be coming back anytime soon!!! NOT IMPRESSED!!!!!!!!!
Jason
Very good food. I found the menu a little confusing my first time there, but the owner came around and explained it a little better. Portions were pretty big, I would definitely return.
Jo-Jo
I shared a Chicken Burrito with my 6 year old son. It was huge and very tasty. We could not finish it! The guacamole was very good as well. Loved the tables and chairs. Adorable! I purchased a bottle of 'Weary-XXX-treme hot sauce'. Yum.

Good food, large portions, neat vibrant decor. Expect some good food here but prices are up there. The place only seats about 20. The local business people come in for lunch so expect low seating, best to visit in off hours. 4 stars

SLOOOOOW.. Slow service. Hard to get a spot to eat at Henderson location. Food was mediocre at best. Over priced. Wont return.
Suzanne Buffie
Excellent Food!. The reason why we first tried JC's was because of the natural ingredients they use in their dishes. They only use free range meats, cook with coconut oil and have stevia sweetened options for drinks. I do not know many other places in Winnipeg that offer these healthy selections. We had the steak fajitas, which was a generous portion..enough for 2 people to share, and it was absolutely AMAZING!! This is the best Mexican BY FAR in the city, and on top of it...actually good for you to eat! The dishes are a little more pricey than the avg "fast food" place but you have to consider what you are getting. Healthy food costs more!!!
Sir Dine-a-lot
Decent but way too expensive. Pretty decent tasting I guess, I rerally enjoyed the tamales, but so not worth what you pay. When you need Mexican, go to Burrito del Rio and get way more bang for your buck. I do like that they have hard to find Mexican/Latin sauces and products for sale though.
Cheryl Jeff
JC's Mexican Restarant is quite good. We went to this restaurant for our double birthday celebration Nov 9th, 2012.
My husband and I have been to a good deal of Mexican Restaurants to eat all over Canada. We have been to very comparable Mexican restaurants in other Canadian cities that were in the middle between fast food and fine dining like this one. We are not sure if after reading the negative reviews it is just Winnipeg cheapskates, but give us a break ,many people writing the J C reviews are expressing they are cheap or just like to complain.
Us and our family who came with us gives J C's a B rating. Our family is very fussy eaters. who have visited this restaurant several times themsleves already.
The entrees range between $14.99- $10.99 approx, and they have several side dishes. Sides of beans and rice, range form $1.99 to $4.99 approx.
The reviews we read in many cases indicated they are just too expensive. They serve quallity food with more expensive cheeses and ingredients at a reasonable price. Even thought this restaurant apprears to be fast food, it is qualtiy fast food, they are not Taco Bell or Taco Time. They are a family fast food restaurant with quality ingredients that takes time to prepare for you & they serve your food to you after making it HOMEMADE.
The only complaint we have is the Taco Salsa Called Galo Pico is $4.99 is too much money, it could be $2.99.The Enchiladas were a bit too thick, and could have had more cheese and thinnner doe. But everything from the Homemade Taco chips,to the lovely Homemade Burritos Quesadillas , Beer, and other choices were very good, We have tried many of their dishes between our family and ourselves.

You can even buy a great selection of great Hot Sauces too to take Home.

We went to the East Kildownan location, it is worth the trip!!

This place used to be really good. Then somewhere along the line they raised their prices (add $1.50 to an $11 burrito for cheese??). Now its just overpriced and there are much better options put there
Jon
Went to the portage location, and was pretty disappointed. Everything looks like it came out of a can, and tastes like it too. Cheese is extra? On fajitas I'd say it's mandatory, same with guacamole, etc. Overall, Mexican food could be cooked by anyone at home better than this place.
Leah
Unsure. The food is good except WAY expensive for what it is and nothing has cheese on it! How can you not have cheese on burritos and tacos and stuff??? The atmosphere and paint are nice and bright and I like that their drink cups are biodegradable but the fruity fountain drinks are uber expensive too. It's good, but I'm not going there anymore $$$$$.
Mmmmfood
Jc tacos and more...more filth. My family and I went to jc tacos for dinner and we were very disappointed. The service was horrible. The cashier had no idea of prices and was distracted by other customers so she had no time for questions about the menu. The restaurant was over stuffed will unnecessary big tables so there was no where to sit. When a table became available the bus person did a horrible job cleaning the table, leaving food and juices on the surface from previous customers. All while being pestered by fruitflies seemingly eminating from the dying potted plants (let's hope ). We had the chicken enchiladas 14.99 and a taco salad 12.99. The actual enchiladas were delicious the sides consisted of bland rice and an awful lettuce tomato (salad?). The taco salad resembled someting out of taco time, very uninteresting. We say.....over priced, underwhelming we won't waste our money again.
Big Al
Good sized portions and good food.
Barbben
Strange. I find it strange that people find their food bland. I have only been to the one on Portage and I loved their food. It wasn't just hot like a lot of Mexican food is, it had lots of different flavours. I had the tripel tostados and ate one there and took two home to eat there. I loved them. My husband is mexican and found the food good as well. Our daughter was there too and enjoyed every bit. The staff were helpful and friendly. I thought the decor was cute and kitchy... Altogether a positive experience.
Hungryman Diner
Bad value, no flavour. We went to the Portage location. Our server brought us some extra thick tortilla chips with salsa (the salsa seemed to be of the jarred variety). Tacos are $3.75 and up, each, and cheese is $0.75 extra (at a Mexican restaurant this was very surprising) so after tax you're looking at a five dollar taco. Taco trios are available for an insignificant discount versus the regular price, but our server told us we must choose one type of filling for all three tacos. The Tamarind Jarritos I was brought was warm, and anyone who is familiar with these soft drinks knows they are best cold. They're kept in some kind of wine rack configuration which doesn't seem to provide adequate cooling. The pupusas had NO flavour and the tamale was mild as May.. aren't they supposed to be hot? Or at least have flavour? The "shredded" beef takes the form of "hunks o' beef". All in all for $75 for 4 people it won't be getting a star for value either. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Madmadmadam
Really really good!. Barbacoa is FANTASTIC! Have only been to the Henderson location and found it charming bright and fun. Unfortunately it is on the pricey side for casual dining, but I definitely thought about that barbacoa taco for weeks after... Will return.

Waaaay too expensive!!

Too expensive for the quality. I work in the area and was so excited about jc taco's and more. i've been in total three times. i wasn't happy either of the first times but this last time was the most disappointing. first of all it was so expensive. they charged 1.75 for cheese but i don't think there really was cheese. then i asked for guacamole and it was 3.99! in total my burrito was 17 dollars. when i got the meal the guacamole was really big and i asked if i could have chips on the side and they said no first and then they said, well for another two dollars. for the price that it was the food isn't very good at all. like i said, there was no taste of cheese.
I appreciated the person working there who I spoke to. He couldn't do anything but did apologize on my way out.
If the prices were cut in half I would consider going again maybe once a month. Until then, not interested.
Macey Hickes
Alright food, but my chicken bowl could have used some real chicken. It tasted prepackaged with a gross, spongy texture.
Sue
Authentic Mexican food and atmosphere. Best burrito I've ever eaten. Will come back
Lover Of All Things Food
Ingredients are cheap and the food price was not. So disappointed. Someone said we would like this if we liked La fiesta, not a chance. South Portage location lacks a lot of care.
Hanauma
We enjoyed our meals. I had an enchilada "JC style" with the chorizo. Good portion size and quite tasty. The chorizo was a very nice change of pace. My wife had a burrito and it was tasty and well portioned. Don't bother ordering the tortillas and salsa. The fresh pico de gallo was good but the chips were absolutely horrible. According to the server they are made "in house". The chip issue was made worse by the fact that they were a 6.99 appetizer! I don't mind paying for the chips and salsa but they need to lower the high prices of the entrees to compensate. The server "Monika" didn't seem overly concerned about our issue with the chips and suggested to put some salt on them. Although no more than 10 chips were eaten, and our disappointment was quite evident, they were left on our bill. Not exactly the way a restaurant builds a reputation.

Over priced small portions. We just went to the Portage Ave restaurant for the first time, very disappointed! The prices are outrages and the portions very small. A taco without cheese; an extra $1.45 for cheese and the shredded beef was soggy and bland.
Sir Omnyvore
Ultra Disappointment. While the service is fine, the food was entirely mediocre. Way over priced for a plate of shredded lettuce(3/4 of the plate), some greasy tortillas, a smidgen of some red stuff and skimpy chicken strips. Walked away feeling like I was robbed in Mexico without the satisfaction of actually being in Mexico. Pass on this one kids.

No value! Move on.... What can I say? It was s severe disappointment. The prices are ridiculously high -so overpriced... the owners must really think that there food is truly worth it. Um, reality check - it really isn't.

-Mediocre Mexican food
-High prices
-Gross interior/decor
-Dirty

$14.99 beef enchilada - NO CHEESE
$1.75 add cheese
= $16.74 plus tax for one mediocre beef enchilada add/ cheese, NO side rice, NO side beans

I'm not overweight - i'm a guy... I left hungry. I refused to order more crap because it was NOT worth it.

I was so shocked.

**Just because Winnipeg is lacking in the Mexican restaurant department does NOT give this joke of a restaurant the right to trick Winnipeggers that this is good quality/valued Mexican**

Avoid this dump - period.

Over Priced but slightly above average. The Empanada is the best dish here. Try it!!!
Tacos are good. Nothing really great about them.. same with the tostadas. I also had the tamale which was the worst and my least favorite out of what I ordered. 6.5/10

Fabulous Food! Fabulous Service!. Dined at Jc's tonight for the 1st time, the Portage Avenue location, live in the area and drive past it almost everyday wanting to stop in but it's always busy! Now I know why! IT'S PHENOMENAL!!!! Everything about it I loved! The decor is adoring, bright colours and so homey, service was exceptional, we were waited on by a bubbly brunette girl who made us feel so comfortable, educated and answered all questions we had about the food and suggested we try the enchilada and i'm so happy we did! I had the chicken and my husband had spicy pork. It was so flavourful and mouth watering and couldn't help but to finish the whole plate, which was a very large portion, just huge!!. My new favorite place to dine! My husband's already planning a lunch trip there tomorrow! Just fabulous! Job well done!

Oh my goodness was the food ever good. Will be going back for sure!

Bland tacos, poor selection of hot sauces and overpriced

Bland. This place is close to where I live. I've tried it twice already. First time, when they opened within the first year and recently. The food gets worst.
I was excited to try those tamales. nah-- those were not good.
tried again the tacos- - how dare they put sooo little into their tacos and charge so much.
tried the pupusas after i noticed they changed the price from $3.50 to $2.99. funny, because they're still not good even if they are 50 cents cheaper.
drinks- overpriced. theres so many better places for this kind of food. people just don't search or care. This isn't authentic... it's an attempt. It's too commercialized. Please save your money and please don't think this is authentic, go to Mexico and try REAL MEXICAN FOOD.

this is tex-mex. but again, theres better tex-mex in the city for much less cash.

I went to the new Portage location this weekend and it was busy. I agree with everyone else, the prices are a little steep considering it seems more like a casual dining restaurant. The portion sizes are big though. I shared an enchilada with someone and was just on the cusp of full. We had ordered chicken, but I think we got barbacoa. It was good even though it was the wrong order, and the server was willing to rectify the order and apologized. Chips and guacamole were expensive, but again, a large portion of tortilla chips. The food was decent, but for the price I'd probably go to La Fiesta instead.

Tasty, but not cheap. Although I live closer to the Henderson location, I haven't had a chance to check this place out until going out to the new Portage Avenue location today with a friend. I wasn't sure what to expect after reading the many reviews, but what I realized is that the people who didn't like the food generally were expecting something along the lines of taco bell. This is authentic Latin American food. The website uses the term Tex-Mex to describe their food, and that is probably part of the problem. Anyway, the portions are huge, and everything is excellent. The menu is clear in it's definitions and the waitress was very helpful. My only issue with this restaurant is that the prices are far too high to make this a regular stop. When a good filling lunch costs over $20 including taxes and pop, you might have a bit of a problem. It might be far more worth it for supper.....

We found this place through Urban Spoon and were pleasantly surprised. I would definitely say it was pricey to say the least $45 for 6 tacos and a plate of chips and guacamole. The food was delicious and fresh, not spicy hot at all. The restatant is really nicely decorated and super clean. On the downside, there was a younger blonde girl taking cash and orders who was really snarky. She actually asked us "do u want your change?". Other than those few things it was a ok experience with awesome food.

Warning! over priced and disappointing!. I'd heard great things from family and friends that went here (the portage location) but they obviously had poor judgement, first $10.99 for pico guac and chips? Maybe would have been appropriate for the size of the appetizer but the pico di gallo was disgusting! We asked the waitress if there was fish sauce in it cause that's what it tasted like and she said there wasn't so I don't know if it just got to close to some raw shrimp or something else but it was on all of the dishes we had and totally ruined my meal! Everything else was mediocre too, I had to douse my $12.99 chicken burrito with salt and hot sauce to cover the rice-a-roni taste of the rice and the bland chicken and beans. and if you wanted extra sour cream it was another $2.00!! Just ridiculous. That terrible place across from the uofw has better mexican food and they're garbage so I would definitely advise to stay away from here.

Poor Value - Poor Experience. My wife and i recently visited JC's with friends and we were extremely disappointed. I ordered the Chicken Enchilada and it came with rice and a very small amount of lettuce. It was easily the worst Enchilada I have ever had. There was a shockingly small amount of sauce on the enchilada. The strange thing was it wasn't even enchilada sauce although they do sell enchilada sauce on a shelf right beside where we were sitting. I was tempted to buy a can and pour it on. The enchilada was more like a fajita. It was filled with barely cooked onions and peppers and was luke warm at best. It was very bland. My wife ordered the Chili Relleno and after sending the meal back twice it still came to her barely warm. Her meal came with very bland tasting beans and flavorless rice. The Relleno itself was terrible and had no flavor at all. We pleaded our case to the lady at the front but she seemed very disinterested. The meal (with one beer each) came to over $50!!!! Ouch what a ripoff for walk up counter service like McDonalds. Our friends ordered some Pupusa's and they were quite good but were overpriced. They also ordered Tamale's which were very good but also expensive for a small portion. We will NEVER go back. This is our least favorite Mexican restaurant in Winnipeg (and beyond). Huge thumbs down. If you like cold, flavorless food this is the place to go.

Portage Ave location. Food was over priced and bland. Portions were a good size. Best I can say is It's Ok would not recommend as a rule.

JC just opened on portage. OMG the food is fabulous. Sit down and waited on. Food is fresh and plentiful. Very popular, worth the wait.
Ricky Fortier
Rip off! It cost over $40 for 2 entrees and 2 coke zeros for lunch. You can make the same thing at home for less then 5 dollars a serving. On top of it, they screwed the order up and then proceeded to ask the customer to pay for their mistake. Do not go here.

Taco Salad Great! The Rest...Not So Good. My family and I ordered 4 different entrees and shared among us. The consensus was that the taco salad & guacamole was excellent. The rest was poor. Rice and beans are extremely bland and taste like a store bought mix. The prices were high ($85 for 4 entrees, chips and guacamole & 4 sodas). The taco shells tasted stale. There are many other Latin restaurants in the city I would return to. I will only come back to JC for Taco Salad. The server was nice and she acknowledged that the menu has several errors so ensure that you confirm prices before ordering.

Fresh and delicious!!. I shared a chicken taco salad with chips and guac with my son tonight (takeout) and it was SO GOOD!! The smell in the van on the way home made us want to just pull over and dig in! This was far and away the most delicious taco salad i've ever had - super flavourful chicken with just the right amount of everything and we ate the bowl too, dipped in the delicious guac. It tastes so fresh and just so good - we want to try everything on the menu now! They were busy but service was still fast and friendly. This is a nice, authentic, family run restaurant and we'll be back - OFTEN!!

JC & More Portage Ave. Finally a Good Mexican Restaurant in Winnipeg and Close to Me. It is a smaller place to Dine, But what it is short on in space, they really make it up with good service, menu and Great tasting meals. It reminds me of the typical family corner restaurant in Mexico. We had Steak Fajitas, Chicken Casadias, And a Beef Enchilada. The Chicken tasted Great, The Steak was Tender and melted in my mouth. It was seasoned Perfectly !

Overall a Great Dinner at a new place that I hope will grow< and be here for a Long Time.

Seriously, no cheese???. I moved to Winnipeg from Arkansas a few years ago and have been craving Mexican food, since. My husband and I decided to give this place a try. The atmosphere was good. Seemed we might've made it to the right spot for some good Mexican food. We placed our order and waited. Once our food arrived (fajita's and a burrito) I noticed there was no cheese. I go to the front thinking that what I ordered, for whatever reason, didn't come with cheese, so I would just order a side of any kind of cheese sauce and be on my way. The girl at the front tells me "we don't serve anything unnatural here" in a slightly snooty tone. THEY SERVE SODAS IN A BOTTLE, BUT NO CHEESE??? WTH??? Well...without the cheese, it was just plain dry. If I had known ahead of time that there would be no cheese, I think I would've passed. It was NOT what I expected. You just can't do proper Mexican food without CHEESE! If you don't like or can't have cheese, then this place may be for you. I, however, am a lover of cheese and think that no Mexican dish is complete without it!

Excellent. We went to the new location on Portage Ave. We arrived nearing the end of the dinner rush it appeared and it was a full house. Our wait for a table was no more than 15-20 mins. Once we were seated we were served immediately by a gentleman who appeared to also be the manager. He was incredibly friendly and helpful with any questions we had regarding menu items. We ordered one of the dinner specials that ran for $30. It was similar to a fajita where the steak was served sizzling, your rice/beans/veggies were fresh on a side platter, and warm tortillas were on the side. This was more than enough to feed my husband and I, with left overs. And our tortillas were even refilled as we were eating the meal. It was delicious and the service was great. I always thought I didn't like Mexican/Latin food, until I had it today! We will definitely return.

Amazing food, but very busy restaurant. I'd been eager to try this new place ever since it first opened. When we arrived, I was not impressed with the amount of time we waited in line for a table but seeing as it's a new restaurant, I was willing to overlook it.

I found the interior very charming; the vibrantly colored walls and table fabric, as well as the music, provided some great ambiance. The place was pretty tightly packed but not uncomfortable. I also noticed that despite the slow service, the servers did a decent job of keeping up with the number of patrons.

One complaint I do have concerns the menu. Especially for someone who is new to Latin American cuisine, the lack of description for some of the dishes was quite annoying. Luckily, our server was very friendly and helpful and able to answer my questions though it would have been better if descriptions were provided. Another thing that got on my nerves was the amount of time it took for our food to arrive but that's something I'm also willing to overlook because of the fact that it's a new restaurant. But once the food arrived -- oh my god! -- nothing else mattered.

The salsa was amazing and very flavorful, a perfect pair to the corn chips. I ordered the taco trio, and the shredded pork was perfectly seasoned, tender and absolutely delicious. The steak fajita was so good! Again, perfectly spiced and delicious, served on a sizzling plate which was so cool. I wasn't a big fan of the corn chip tortilla but if you're looking for something other than the standard floury kind (incidentally, the kind I like), then it would be a good change. The Mexican pop drinks were also a great alternative to regular drinks.

Overall, I enjoyed the experience. The service is lacking but I'm sure once things calm down, as it's a new restaurant, or they hire more servers, it will get much better. The food is definitely worth it.

A favorite. I've been here only twice as it's a little out of the way for me.
The first visit I went I took a chance on something I'd never heard of (after being to Mexico 3 times) & of course as I write this the name isn't coming to me. It was a vegetarian entree with grilled veggies in rice in an extremely buttered HUGE burger bun. It was good, if a little messy. I would encourage dinners to order the pico de gallo for a good, tangy addition. On this trip I also discovered the tamarind juice. The lady at the register explained to me that it was very popular with soccer players & atheletes in south america. When I asked her about the taste she insisted I have a sample because it was impossible to describe. WOW. It is absolutly impossible to discribe. Refreshing, tangy & absolutely absurdly flavourful.
That day We were there for lunch so we weren't able to order the pupusas (which we haven't been able to find since the Spanish restaurant on Portage & Balmoral closed).

We came back a few weeks later dead set on the pupusas and they were not dissapointing. Savoury & smoky with perfect tangy coleslaw & hot sauce. Three was definitely plenty. Also got to enjoy the amazing tamarind drink again (I would buy that stuff in 5 gallon pails).

Love the decor, chairs & tables & find them authentic to what you would see in Mexico. The male owner seems like a really great guy too. When we were there last, the family/staff was eating dinner together in their dinning room & I think that is a screaming advertisement. If you wouldnt feed it to your own family, don't feed it to your customers! Go JC's!
ILoveGoodFood
Good...not great. I ordered the chicken enchilada and it was served with a side of rice. It was not really like an enchilada at all - it was basically a chicken fajita wrapped up - TONS of onions and peppers and the onions were not entirely cooked through so it had a very strong onion flavour - not the best meal I've had. My husband had the taco trio, which was served with refried beans. He loved his meal. The portions are HUGE, I could only finish half. I probably wouldn't choose this place as my first Mexican food pick - there are others in Winnipeg that I have found to be much better.

(Portage Ave location) - STAY AWAY!. I just tried JC`s mexican restaurant on 2615 Portage Ave this weekend, Wow, just aweful! The waitress knows nothing about the menu items, They could not get the order right, it took forever to get our meals but the worst was the food. I had a chicken taco for $3.99 - tiny, tiny portion (i would pay $0.49 cents for), the taco was flavorless. My main entree was a chicken Burrito, The shells must to be too small as you can not pick it as it will fall apart. The burrito itself had very little chicken in it, the burritto was flavorless. I was sooo disappointed by this place. I love Mexican food and i have to give this place a 1 out of 10. I suggest Burrito Del Rio on River ave for a GREAT burrito. never had a bad meal yet, too bad its far away from house.

I went to the new location on Portage and Thompson, stood in the hallway at the door with 10 others for about 30-35 mins withou being seated, after I asked one of the servers/host to seat the crowd that gathered or I was leaving we got in and seated, apparently a server had quit on this the opening day. So the delay made sense. Although this rest. Has over 60 seats and not nearly enough staff. It was crazy rude to not address the 8-12 people waiting at the door but I really wanted Mexican so I stayed. The food is decent and authentic, but came on a dirty plate lol so basically don't go until they get their shi** together and get more staff. I'm sure it will improve or they wouldn't be in business.

Loved it! Had the enchilada, next time will try the fajitas! My mouth is still watering when I think about how good it was.
Darren
Great restaurant. Enchilada is huge. Loud music. Ordering situation is different.

Ambiance is better than the food. This restaurant is located in an old bank. It is brightly decorated and Mexican music is playing so you really feel the culture. The tables are somewhat close together, making it hard to get around at times. You also have to order at the counter rather than having your order taken at the table. This makes it uncomfortably tight in the entrance as more people enter and are trying to read the menu up on the wall while others are squeezing through the crowd to order.

There are numerous options on the menu. I had the 3 beef taco platter priced reasonably at $9.99 +$1 for the beans & rice. However, the ground beef wasn't seasoned at all. I added salsa, which is available on the table, but it still wasn't great. My husband had the barbacoa (shredded beef) option which was a bit tastier but something's missing. The beans and rice were nothing to write home about.

We also had the pupusas - they were fantastic for only $2.99! A delicious tortilla filled with cheese, beans and pork and served with salsa and coleslaw. That was delicious!

The prices for the combos (fajita steak or chicken) starting at $18.99 was pretty pricey, I thought, for a place like this. But the portion sizes are huge so you won't go away hungry.

Overall, I don't think the food was good enough for me to return any time soon. They do have a fair number of items for purchase such as hot sauces, chilis and spices.
Savour Winnipeg
Some of the best tacos in the city!. Theres a food revolution happening in Winnipeg. A sudden proliferation of restaurants serving south of the border inspired cuisine to the newcomers who inspired it, and the new comers to the scene.

A few restaurants are courageous enough to respect the bold, original, fresh and authentic flavours of their homeland and not dumb it down for us northerners. JC's Tacos and More is one of them. Did I say revolution. This place is a revelation.

A vibrantly painted interior with incredible carved tables and chairs prepares you for the statement the food is about to make. Here it is, Winnipeg, the flavours and freshness that Latin American cuisine is famous for.

Don't mistake this for Mexican. And it's not Tex Mex. It serves up some of the best Latin American food your money can buy, and you can buy a lot of it because the prices are more than fair.

From El Salvador, enjoy papusas, light pockets of dough filled with retried beans, pork, beef, cheese or combinations of them all.

And the tacos. These are the tacos you dream they would serve you in Mexico, or perhaps have been lucky enough to have discovered off resort BTW before fear of being murdered or kidnapped prevented it. Then again, this is Elmwood.

None of those anemic white flour factory jobs, these tacos are encased in house made masa (corn meal dough) shells and fried to order. The texture and flavor is unlike anything you'll find elsewhere.

And the fillings are beautifully seasoned using choice cuts of locally sourced meat. Not ground beef, but chopped. Not cubes of pork tenderloin but lovingly slow cooked and pulled. Not pre-grilled, frozen strips, but tender, moist and flavourful free range chicken.

Forgive the cliche and potential plagiarism of someone's marketing slogan, but it's quality you can taste.

Amazing Mexican rice accompanies all platters along with home cooked refried frijoles and a containter of delicately flavored and refreshing pico de gallo.

JC's Tacos and more. I can't get enough.
Jeff
Good food, bad tables. The food is delicious, but the tables are not secured to their bases. Don't lean on them or you'll be eating the lunch of the person across from you.
