JC’s Tacos and More is a Latin American restaurant located on Henderson Highway, in what was the old Elmwood Post Office. The post office was an Elmwood landmark, that ceased operation around 25 years ago. For a while the building was home to an art gallery, and then JC’s Tacos and More opened up about 10 years ago.
Great fresh food, and worth the wait. JC does a great job with all the dishes I have tried so far. Price might be a bit on the high side but you definitely get what you pay for. Decor is awesome and in your face traditional which I enjoyed. Seemed to be a lot of people coming in for take out. Enchilada was huge and stuff with more than we could finish. Food didn't have that overseasoned high sodium "effort" that some places seem to do to have things full of flavour. Simple flavour and ingredients and delicious. I will definitely be back.
The only complaint I have is that it seems like we were over charged. Bf got the enchiladas, son got the nachos, I got the sm padillas(might have misspelled that), 2 drinks and 1 beer, all for under $90! We were not expecting that! .. Although, I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant with such super friendly staff, and owner!!! The environment even gives you that Mexican feel! Everything is home made, made with fresh ingredients from the sauces, tortillas, nachos, salsa, and guacamole. The portions are huge so be prepared to walk out with a full belly. Will definitely be back.... but will check the receipt next time.
The atmosphere is vibrant and really has an authentic feel. The staff are pleasant and service is great. The cook even showed me how to make tortillas by hand.
I recommend the tostadas, they were amazing. I will definitely be a repeat customer. Next time you want a real taste of Mexico do not 'run for the border' ... Get to JC Tacos instead; you will not be disappointed
great experience here! friendly staff! huge portions for the food prices. lots of hot sauce selections. i love their mexican theme restaurant. fresh food made to order. i would come back here again!
Make sure you're hungry when you go. Large portions, and amazing food. The service is fast, and they have an excellent selection of beverages.
By far the best quesadillas I have ever tasted! The pico is so fresh and full of flavour! They care about giving their food the freshest ingredients possible and it is shown in the flavours of all the dishes. The drinks all make for a great addition to the meal and you cannot go wrong with any flavour! Owners are extremely friendly and truly care about giving their costumers the best Mexican food Winnipeg has to offer!
Good food! Good service! Pricy, but pretty tasty! Place has a welcoming vibe to it. Visited here for lunch with the fiance, I had the chicken taco salad its got that nice zing to it. Good portion size at least I was able to take some home and eat the rest of it later. Presentation of the food is well presented. Their fresh natural drinks that they make are delicious. I decided to go with the creamy looking one (forgot its name) but it tasted pretty good. Hibiscus is good too - got a sample of the taste. I would go here again when I have extra $$. I would like to try their other menu items, definitely coming back for Cinco De Mayo.
AWESOME! This definitely beats your typical dinner out! Amazing atmosphere of authentic Mexican decor (did you know that those tables and chairs were made and hand painted in Mexico?!). All products available, including beverages and items for purchase in their "pantry" are all from Mexico/Mexican brands.
The restaurant was quiet when we went, but we ordered burritos, and took our seats. The food came out within 7 minutes, was pipping hot, and was delicious!! The burrito portion looked like a small baby... enormous! I highly recommend the avocado-jalapeno aioli sauce available too. The burrito was filled with meat, which is awesome - they didn't skip and just stuff in "fillers" (rice, beans, etc). The plating included some sour cream, salsa, and shredded lettuce to use at your discretion. I could only finish half of my meal, and got the rest for take away... this is the first time that day-old leftovers were just as good as they were fresh!
I enjoyed a lime Jarrito's soda while there, which was amazing also.
Highly recommend, can't wait to go back!
Has some free range meats, and shud be change 3 $ signs not 2 imo. Ordered an enchilada for 14.99 + tax. Was a bit pricey. Was 3 gals working there. 1 canadian at the till, and was glad to see some authenticity with 2 mexican gals in the kitchen. Menu on the wall says the chicken and pork is free range. Beef apparently is natural, which i'm not sure meant. Asked the gal at the till if the meats were also antibiotic free and fed organic feed. She did not know. I ordered a pork pineapple enchilada for takeout. It looked like beef to me actually because of the darker color of the meat. Ate it pretty fast, not sure if there was pineapples in there actually. Got a coupon for an enchilada for 9.99. Think that should be their regular price on it. If the meat is certified organic then it should be 14.99 imo. Also didn't ask what they mean by the beef is natural vs. the chicken and pork being free range. Should be changed to a rating of $$$ from $$ imo.
Great Guacamole. When they first opened, the food and people made the price and the wait worth it. Now the food is hit and miss, still pricey and long wait times. One fabulous consistent: the guacamole!
Amazing!!. I have been here a few times now and each times I thoroughly enjoyed myself! I had the tostadas both times and tried a margarita last time. The food is priced very well. The margarita was a little pricy for the small amount but it was the best margarita I've ever had. The food is consistent every time. The tostadas are great and I LOVE the Pico de Gallo. I get extra every time. The real fruit juices are very nice too. The service is friendly but sometimes slow and seems a little unorganized. Overall a nice atmosphere. Last time we went it was very busy and one of the cooks brought out our meals to us and he was very polite and friendly. He even came back to check on us after seeing that the server was busy. When I eat there I feel like I am a family member of the staff. They are very welcoming and sweet!
A big thank you to all the folks at JC Henderson, They did a great job for my bday! Felt like being in Mexico!
The restaurant has a lively atmosphere. Bright colours & great tables and chairs!
Has a chicken burrito and their in house hibiscus juice. $20.00 a little pricey but it's not a fast food place so expect to pay more.Nice tender chicken in mild sauce with green pepper & onion all wrapped up in a flour tortilla. Than covered with cheese & creamy sauce. I found it a bit salty. Over all good portion, good taste, & a tad expensive.
The own and staff make u feel at home
The food is cook well but not to person but in a group way witch too me does take away but the people make up for it if u in a rush its great and okay too sit in its very close to basic I will go there again soon
Very good food. I found the menu a little confusing my first time there, but the owner came around and explained it a little better. Portions were pretty big, I would definitely return.
I shared a Chicken Burrito with my 6 year old son. It was huge and very tasty. We could not finish it! The guacamole was very good as well. Loved the tables and chairs. Adorable! I purchased a bottle of 'Weary-XXX-treme hot sauce'. Yum.
Good food, large portions, neat vibrant decor. Expect some good food here but prices are up there. The place only seats about 20. The local business people come in for lunch so expect low seating, best to visit in off hours. 4 stars
Excellent Food!. The reason why we first tried JC's was because of the natural ingredients they use in their dishes. They only use free range meats, cook with coconut oil and have stevia sweetened options for drinks. I do not know many other places in Winnipeg that offer these healthy selections. We had the steak fajitas, which was a generous portion..enough for 2 people to share, and it was absolutely AMAZING!! This is the best Mexican BY FAR in the city, and on top of it...actually good for you to eat! The dishes are a little more pricey than the avg "fast food" place but you have to consider what you are getting. Healthy food costs more!!!
Decent but way too expensive. Pretty decent tasting I guess, I rerally enjoyed the tamales, but so not worth what you pay. When you need Mexican, go to Burrito del Rio and get way more bang for your buck. I do like that they have hard to find Mexican/Latin sauces and products for sale though.
This place used to be really good. Then somewhere along the line they raised their prices (add $1.50 to an $11 burrito for cheese??). Now its just overpriced and there are much better options put there
Good sized portions and good food.
Really really good!. Barbacoa is FANTASTIC! Have only been to the Henderson location and found it charming bright and fun. Unfortunately it is on the pricey side for casual dining, but I definitely thought about that barbacoa taco for weeks after... Will return.
Authentic Mexican food and atmosphere. Best burrito I've ever eaten. Will come back
Fabulous Food! Fabulous Service!. Dined at Jc's tonight for the 1st time, the Portage Avenue location, live in the area and drive past it almost everyday wanting to stop in but it's always busy! Now I know why! IT'S PHENOMENAL!!!! Everything about it I loved! The decor is adoring, bright colours and so homey, service was exceptional, we were waited on by a bubbly brunette girl who made us feel so comfortable, educated and answered all questions we had about the food and suggested we try the enchilada and i'm so happy we did! I had the chicken and my husband had spicy pork. It was so flavourful and mouth watering and couldn't help but to finish the whole plate, which was a very large portion, just huge!!. My new favorite place to dine! My husband's already planning a lunch trip there tomorrow! Just fabulous! Job well done!
Oh my goodness was the food ever good. Will be going back for sure!
I went to the new Portage location this weekend and it was busy. I agree with everyone else, the prices are a little steep considering it seems more like a casual dining restaurant. The portion sizes are big though. I shared an enchilada with someone and was just on the cusp of full. We had ordered chicken, but I think we got barbacoa. It was good even though it was the wrong order, and the server was willing to rectify the order and apologized. Chips and guacamole were expensive, but again, a large portion of tortilla chips. The food was decent, but for the price I'd probably go to La Fiesta instead.
We found this place through Urban Spoon and were pleasantly surprised. I would definitely say it was pricey to say the least $45 for 6 tacos and a plate of chips and guacamole. The food was delicious and fresh, not spicy hot at all. The restatant is really nicely decorated and super clean. On the downside, there was a younger blonde girl taking cash and orders who was really snarky. She actually asked us "do u want your change?". Other than those few things it was a ok experience with awesome food.
JC just opened on portage. OMG the food is fabulous. Sit down and waited on. Food is fresh and plentiful. Very popular, worth the wait.
Excellent. We went to the new location on Portage Ave. We arrived nearing the end of the dinner rush it appeared and it was a full house. Our wait for a table was no more than 15-20 mins. Once we were seated we were served immediately by a gentleman who appeared to also be the manager. He was incredibly friendly and helpful with any questions we had regarding menu items. We ordered one of the dinner specials that ran for $30. It was similar to a fajita where the steak was served sizzling, your rice/beans/veggies were fresh on a side platter, and warm tortillas were on the side. This was more than enough to feed my husband and I, with left overs. And our tortillas were even refilled as we were eating the meal. It was delicious and the service was great. I always thought I didn't like Mexican/Latin food, until I had it today! We will definitely return.
Amazing food, but very busy restaurant. I'd been eager to try this new place ever since it first opened. When we arrived, I was not impressed with the amount of time we waited in line for a table but seeing as it's a new restaurant, I was willing to overlook it.
I found the interior very charming; the vibrantly colored walls and table fabric, as well as the music, provided some great ambiance. The place was pretty tightly packed but not uncomfortable. I also noticed that despite the slow service, the servers did a decent job of keeping up with the number of patrons.
One complaint I do have concerns the menu. Especially for someone who is new to Latin American cuisine, the lack of description for some of the dishes was quite annoying. Luckily, our server was very friendly and helpful and able to answer my questions though it would have been better if descriptions were provided. Another thing that got on my nerves was the amount of time it took for our food to arrive but that's something I'm also willing to overlook because of the fact that it's a new restaurant. But once the food arrived -- oh my god! -- nothing else mattered.
The salsa was amazing and very flavorful, a perfect pair to the corn chips. I ordered the taco trio, and the shredded pork was perfectly seasoned, tender and absolutely delicious. The steak fajita was so good! Again, perfectly spiced and delicious, served on a sizzling plate which was so cool. I wasn't a big fan of the corn chip tortilla but if you're looking for something other than the standard floury kind (incidentally, the kind I like), then it would be a good change. The Mexican pop drinks were also a great alternative to regular drinks.
Overall, I enjoyed the experience. The service is lacking but I'm sure once things calm down, as it's a new restaurant, or they hire more servers, it will get much better. The food is definitely worth it.
A favorite. I've been here only twice as it's a little out of the way for me.
The first visit I went I took a chance on something I'd never heard of (after being to Mexico 3 times) & of course as I write this the name isn't coming to me. It was a vegetarian entree with grilled veggies in rice in an extremely buttered HUGE burger bun. It was good, if a little messy. I would encourage dinners to order the pico de gallo for a good, tangy addition. On this trip I also discovered the tamarind juice. The lady at the register explained to me that it was very popular with soccer players & atheletes in south america. When I asked her about the taste she insisted I have a sample because it was impossible to describe. WOW. It is absolutly impossible to discribe. Refreshing, tangy & absolutely absurdly flavourful.
That day We were there for lunch so we weren't able to order the pupusas (which we haven't been able to find since the Spanish restaurant on Portage & Balmoral closed).
We came back a few weeks later dead set on the pupusas and they were not dissapointing. Savoury & smoky with perfect tangy coleslaw & hot sauce. Three was definitely plenty. Also got to enjoy the amazing tamarind drink again (I would buy that stuff in 5 gallon pails).
Love the decor, chairs & tables & find them authentic to what you would see in Mexico. The male owner seems like a really great guy too. When we were there last, the family/staff was eating dinner together in their dinning room & I think that is a screaming advertisement. If you wouldnt feed it to your own family, don't feed it to your customers! Go JC's!
Loved it! Had the enchilada, next time will try the fajitas! My mouth is still watering when I think about how good it was.
Great restaurant. Enchilada is huge. Loud music. Ordering situation is different.
Some of the best tacos in the city!. Theres a food revolution happening in Winnipeg. A sudden proliferation of restaurants serving south of the border inspired cuisine to the newcomers who inspired it, and the new comers to the scene.
A few restaurants are courageous enough to respect the bold, original, fresh and authentic flavours of their homeland and not dumb it down for us northerners. JC's Tacos and More is one of them. Did I say revolution. This place is a revelation.
A vibrantly painted interior with incredible carved tables and chairs prepares you for the statement the food is about to make. Here it is, Winnipeg, the flavours and freshness that Latin American cuisine is famous for.
Don't mistake this for Mexican. And it's not Tex Mex. It serves up some of the best Latin American food your money can buy, and you can buy a lot of it because the prices are more than fair.
From El Salvador, enjoy papusas, light pockets of dough filled with retried beans, pork, beef, cheese or combinations of them all.
And the tacos. These are the tacos you dream they would serve you in Mexico, or perhaps have been lucky enough to have discovered off resort BTW before fear of being murdered or kidnapped prevented it. Then again, this is Elmwood.
None of those anemic white flour factory jobs, these tacos are encased in house made masa (corn meal dough) shells and fried to order. The texture and flavor is unlike anything you'll find elsewhere.
And the fillings are beautifully seasoned using choice cuts of locally sourced meat. Not ground beef, but chopped. Not cubes of pork tenderloin but lovingly slow cooked and pulled. Not pre-grilled, frozen strips, but tender, moist and flavourful free range chicken.
Forgive the cliche and potential plagiarism of someone's marketing slogan, but it's quality you can taste.
Amazing Mexican rice accompanies all platters along with home cooked refried frijoles and a containter of delicately flavored and refreshing pico de gallo.
JC's Tacos and more. I can't get enough.
Nothing but the best, great Mexican food.
With Brilliant service( I believe he was the owner) and even the our server was super nice. 😍 Even offered drinks, super humble people.
Tried the Chicken Tacos and veggie enchiladas. Hand down the best i have had in such a long time. Definitely, would go back for more. 🤘
The food was fresh and juicy. Both Tacos and enchiladas were brilliant.
Additional Salsa and a little more of sour cream would be great!
10/10 place for mexican food.
It’s Tuesday and I felt like a taco was necessary. Today I stopped at JC’s Tacos for lunch. It’s a cute and colourful restaurant.
To start I tried the pork tamale. I’ve never had a tamale, but now I understand why people love them. I’ll be back for more. They were so good.
For the main we had the chicken enchiladas and the barbacoa trio taco platter. Both were very satisfying and tasty. Both came with Mexican rice and a little side salad. The tacos also came with refried beans.
JC’s Tacos is a huge step up from your regular taco stand.
I highly recommend this restaurant!!
Normally I LOVE JC tacos. The chicken enchiladas are my favourite! I convinced my work to order our lunch from here today and I wouldn’t shut up about how excited I was for my chicken enchilada. (My three vegetarian co workers couldn’t find an option on the skip app so they ordered from somewhere else. So that was disappointing) I have a mushroom allergy and we’ve ordered from here or eaten in well over 30 times without issue. We tell them about it and the food is made accordingly. Unfortunately three bites in a see part of a mushroom. I tear apart the whole enchilada and there’s no more. It’s clearly an accident, but I’m shaking and scared I’m going to go into anaphylactic shock. All my co workers look at the piece of mushroom. Yes, we all agree. It’s a mushroom. You can see the gills in the darker part. One co worker took a tiny nibble. Yes it’s a mushroom.
I’m not removing the 5th star for that. Accidents happen. It’s how they responded when I called the restaurant that dropped my rating. They flat out argued with me three times that there was no chance there was a mushroom in my enchilada. Next time I suggest you be more sympathetic and apologetic in this situation. I was expecting, “oh my gosh! I’m so sorry! We thought we were careful with your order. Please report it on the skip app.” Instead of telling me the thing right in front of me is impossible. Especially when my life is on the line and I’m scared I might die or have to go to hospital.
I was so disappointed. I ended up eating dumb subway instead. I still love their enchiladas, but I’ll be very nervous to eat from here again.
Been here a few times and loved it each time. The photo is our order of 2 enchilada meals, and an order of chips/guac/pico. Delicious!
During peak rush hour and dinner hours, the busy Henderson Hwy and one-way street along side the restaurant can make parking a bit of a pain, but it's easily navigated and is definitely a local restaurant worth supporting.
Wowed at JC'S Tacos and More
Wow what a great eatery. We went here for Taco Week and we were not disappointed.
This was our first time trying JC'S Tacos. We parked on the street just before JC's. This street is one way, please note, the next street is also one way and you can't turn right onto it.
We entered from the front but there is a handicapped entrance at the rear. Once inside the staff was super friendly. The star of this trip was the food. These tacos were some of the best food I've ever tried.
I loved it all and the green sauce was amazing.
Go for Taco Week :)
We will be going back.
This is a great place to come and have a taste of Mexico!!
Food and service are excellent! Don’t forget to get your margarita with your meal!!
JC's Tacos never disappoints. The food is authentically Mexican. You've got to try their homemade fruit juice with in season fruit. Today it was Watermelon and Hibiscus. Delicious!
