Review The Original Pancake House - Winnipeg

Tasty food and nice customer service! Went in today around 1:30pm and was seated immediately. Server was kind and polite. She came around constantly to refill my coffee & check on our table. I ordered the vegan waffles with a side of hash browns (not pictured). I was really impressed to see a Vegan option available on the menu. Overall a good experience! I would definitely come back.

Came here for some rest after a nice walk around Kings Park. The interior felt cozy; enjoyed watching softly falling snow through the large window, with my special someone♡ Staffs were friendly and attentive to my needs. Overall the food was just what I expected in a simple breakfast place.

Great place for breakfast menu. Food taste really good, you need to be there to have a taste. Definitely coming back.

We came in a party of six for lunch. Only one negative - we had to wait an extra 8 minutes for three of six meals to come out. Not too major an issue for us. The meals were great and the service from Dillon was excellent. You have to try the Big Apple and the Blueberry Waffles!!!

Wow! I haven't been out for a year or so and had forgotten how great this place is for breakfast! Food was superb. As busy as they were the staff all had smiles and were very productive. I will be going back.

We stopped in at this location for the first time, we were looking forward to our lunch. When we arrived we where seated very fast which was great however once seated we found ourselves waiting for a very long time to even get menu's. So long in fact that the staff that sat us realized that our waiter had not come by. She came to our table and was very surprised no one had attended to us, she quickly got us menus and said she would speak to our waitress. Once again quite a bit of time passed and finally we were attended to by a waitress that had passed our table and cleary saw us sitting there about 3-4 times. Although the food was good I'd have to admit the service provided by our waitress was terrible.

I’ve been going to The Pancake House for about 50 years, but my time there today is my last. The serving personnel were exemplary. The food I ordered was terrible I had the triple decker sandwich or another name Is a Club House. The meat was dry and flavourless. I took half of it home and tried to fix it. The meat was just to awful and I threw it all in the garbage. The old family friend I took with me ordered a German Pancake to go and was told all the fixing was included with the pancake, but they weren’t. She took their word for it and didn’t find out the truth until she got home. She called me and was very upset. I left a good tip for the serving personnel but we won’t be returning to what was one of our long time favourite restaurants.

Came at lunch and I foolishly thought it would be quiet or slow. Nope! Very busy, but we were seated within minutes, and then we looked at the menu and I haven't had that hard of time picking something in a long time. Ended up getting waffles and it was the right choice, will go back to try more of that menu.

My wife and I decided to go for breakfast, and we were promptly taken to our seat and provided with water and coffee and juice.

Our waitress came to ask if we were ready to order (server:Diana) or needed more time, we requested more time.

Be careful what you ask for, she never came back when we were ready to order, we waited quite some time and than had to flag her down. Not what we were expecting but it kept on happening. The food finally came and was excellent, we left a tip for food quality, not for service, as it was lacking on this occasion.

My Coffee needed refilling but I had to wait again, and for quite some time. I got up and asked if there was a self serve station for me to refill my cup up at, I knew there wasn’t but I wanted to make a point, she said she’d bring out a pot to refresh’s my coffee. When she came back she let me know she was serving a large table and their food was coming out now, I guess I should have apologized for not being a large table as this seems to be the prerequisite for prompt service.

I watched her (Diana) and she appeared to be experienced and courteous but today chose to focus on her large group to ensure a good tip, she doesn’t realize small tables tip as well.

We will go back but I will avoid her section as I don’t want to be an afterthought too our server. Not 100% service this time but food was really good, perhaps next time we’ll get service we were expecting.

Disappointed in Winnipeg

Ordered the turkey club house and asked for onion to be added. Never charged extra for it before-not told there was $1.50 charge for a small slice of red onion. They had also run out of coleslaw and told me they gave me extra fries instead-well there were no extra! Manager was extremely rude she said you ate it and liked it didn't you so you have to pay for it. Told her I wouldn't be back and she took it off. Not sure with an attitude like that, that I will be going back. There are a lot of other places that will give you a slice of onion for free. Beware of hidden charges!

Such a beautiful restaurant! Servers are attentive and tons of parking available. Presentation is typically quite good, and I find this location had a higher quality in taste than others in the chain. It feels like more of a high class option for brunch or “breakfast for dinner”.

I had the apple/cinnamon crepes and they were ok. I liked the interior styling of this restaurant and I think it would make a better lounge/restaurant with steaks and burgers.
The pancakes and waffles are mix out of the box and nothing special. I make 100 times better home made waffles from scratch at home.
I honestly can say we wont be returning here when we can do Stellas or Coras for way better food.
The front reception is odd and out of character from the dining area in that it has toys and junk cluttered around the till.

Cant complain about the service as it was fine.

Had the giant apple pancake and banana split waffle. Kinda prefer the old one on Pembina. This one looks like Chop Steakhouse. Service is quick and friendly. Still struggle with paying $40.00 for ppl for breakfast.

Having never been to the "original" original pancake house I have no frame of reference. I found this place to be OK. Their German baked pancake was in no way authentic. I don't know what anyone would order it. The other options are OK. Just stick to Bacon and Eggs if you come here.

This was our first try last Saturday at this location and I would say the food were great. I ordered for their new item on the menu - French toast banana bread with caramel and pecan and was delicious. My friends said their food was also great. I found their coffee very strong though, in my opinion. Nice modern decor. Overall great experience, fast, friendly service with ample parking. We'll be back to try their new menus.

I have been here a few times now and I can say that this franchise is consistent. I have almost the same experience no matter which Pancake House I go to.

As is usual with almost any breakfast place you go to on weekends, there is a little bit of a wait time when you get there. The staff does a good job of moving people in and out and accommodating any group, no matter how large or small. They are always friendly and are more than willing to get you whatever you may need. When the place is packed, it does take a little bit of time for them to come around but even then, they still are around to fill coffees and ask how things are going before it gets too late.

The food at this location is also the same as it is at any other Pancake House. I really like this because I know what to expect and I can get my favorites and not have to be worried that this staff will make it different than others. My favorites are the Ham & Cheese pancake and then anything that comes with their signature Buttermilk Pancakes. They always prepare everything to specifications and are quite accommodating when I have heard others ask for substitutions. Nothing on the menu blows me away but it is all just good, wholesome breakfast food.

The atmosphere at the new place is what separates this place from the the other locations. This one definitely has a more modern feel. I like how the tables and layout allow for flexibility to accommodate many different size groups without having to wait for an hour for the one table that can seat more than 4 people.

The one thing I will say about this location specifically is that you must be prepared to wait a little while when you get there. Especially on weekend mornings. Not sure if it is the novelty of the new location or what but this seems to be where everyone comes for breakfast.

Will definitely be making my way back here again. It is a solid, consistent restaurant.

Had lunch here today. To start off, staff was very friendly and accomodating. It was my first time to experience 3 staff come up to us and ask if we need something to drink. Typically, it's either we have to wait for a while for someone to offer us a drink or there would be only one staff who would come up to us. Though it was full today, the wait for the food was not too long. The food was great, a lot better than the Pancake House at the Forks. Lastly, I love the theme of the place. The only downside for me is the location which is far from where I live. But overall, it was a great dining experience!

I tried out the new location on Kenaston. The first thing I noticed was the interior, a lot different than the other locations. The food wasn't much different, however. I had the Original breakfast, which had 4 strips of bacon, 2 eggs, 3 pancakes, and hashbrowns. The bacon was somewhat chewy, the eggs were cold, and the pancakes were ok. I did enjoy the hashbrowns, they were the cubed kind with skin on.

I dont really go in expecting much from a restaurant such as this. Just your typical chain restaurant breakfast, like a Smittys or Perkins, etc. Not the type of restaurant that will blow you away, your taste buds will be underwhelmed, but it will get you full. I'll probably go back for the Giant Apple Pancake though.

While the service was good, and the place seems busy, was not the best breakfast. I ordered potato pancakes, and I was unaware they were going go come totally deep fried. They were too oily and not what I expected. They did arrive warm, but to serve such a deep fried fish for breakfast did not do it for me. I may try one more time, but will definitely be having something else.

Went here with my husband a couple of weeks ago. My husband wanted to give this new location a try, hoping the food would be better than the one on Pembina. It was, however, my first time at an Original Pancake House.

I decided to order the los cabos omelette ($11.99), which contained taco beef, cheddar and mozzarella blend, tomatoes, green peppers, onion and jalapeños served with salsa. The omelette comes with hash browns and a choice of either buttermilk pancakes or toast, and I decided to get rye toast.

The omelette is a frittata-style oven baked omelette, which I didn't mind. What I did mind is the fact that the omelette was not seasoned whatsoever and was extremely bland. The sausages I had were from my husband's super deluxe combo platter. The hash browns were also cold. The only enjoyable part of my breakfast was probably the two sausage links my husband gave me and the rye toast. I also didn't understand why I was given such a small plate either.

Overall, the place looks nice, but it doesn't make up for the bad food, and we will not likely be returning. Also, service wasn't that great either. Our server wasn't as attentive. She gave my husband his pancakes but forgot to give us the syrup. We were waiting for her to stop by our table to check up on us, but she never did, so we had to wave her down to get it for us.

This establishment should feel ashamed for calling themselves the Original Pancake House... I decided to take my wife here because it was so close to our home (5 minute walking distance). I ordered what they called the Deluxe Breakfast, which included 3 eggs, sausages, bacon and ham. With a side of their infamous pancakes. First of all, the foods came out lukewarm.. odd. The eggs weren't seasoned, but tasted okay, can't screw up frozen sausages, bacon and ham-- so nothing noteworthy to say the least. The pancakes were a huge disappointment. I was looking forward to eating some fluffy buttermilk pancakes but what I got was cold, not-so-fluffy pancakes with gummy texture. How can they call themselves the original Pancake House? It boggles my mind.

If you want a fulfilling, and satisfying breakfast, go to Stella's Cafe. Only positive place about The Original Pancake house was the distance from our home.

I'll update my review based on their breakfast - it's much much better than the lunch/dinner options. But I didn't love it. I know people who have a huge love for this place but it just doesn't do it for me as the pancakes feel quite heavy. They're not dense but they seem to just land heavy in the stomach and I don't like that. It's the kind of breakfast that makes you want to take a nap but I suppose that's not such a bad thing on a Sunday. The kids meals are probably the best value if you have kids as for $6.99 there's an option for scrambled eggs, two sausages or bacon, two pancakes and hashbrowns. There was about as much food on that plate as my two by four which is $9.99 for two eggs, four pancake and hashbrowns.

Overall the service is friendly and food service is pretty prompt considering how busy it is at brunch time.

****

The new McGillivray Pancake House is nearly unrecognizable if you didn't see the signage. This place just opened up late November 2015 with lots of glass which shows off all the funky lights they used in their decor. The interior space is huge and includes a private room that can be closed off with a barn door. They were still training the staff but overall service was fine. This is a family restaurant with casual food offerings like sandwiches, burgers, salads and all day breakfast at very moderate prices $8-$13. The reason this is a 2 and not a 3 is because they claim that their food is made from scratch and when I asked if their burgers are made from scratch - there was a pause and then a yes. So I'm not sure if the young server didn't know or just said yes cause she was trained to say that.

Anyhow, ordered the Champion Burger - bacon, cheddar cheese, grilled onions, lettuce and tomatoes ($11.99) which is served on a cheddar and onion bun with your choice of potato chippers or shoestring French fries & coleslaw, soup, or tossed salad. The price is fine but the burger patty tasted and looked like it was purchased from M&M Meats and heated up. It didn't look like a made from scratch burger patty for sure and tasted pretty blah. Fries were good and coleslaw was average with a creamy dressing. I would not order this burger again and wouldn't recommend as such. So best bet is to stick with the all day breakfast menu.

Overall, it's a decent family restaurant for young families and maybe to take grandma and grandpa to for breakfast.
