Delicious food and excellent service! Had a chocolate banana milkshake (HUGE) and the blue cheese, bacon, and caramelized onion burger with a side of fries. Everything was delicious but with taxes and tip is was over $30. Will try other menu items in moderation as $30 for lunch is quite pricey.
My company picked up pulled pork, slaw and Greek salad for a company BBQ for 15 people. The food was wonderful and everyone enjoyed their meal. We were all particularly impressed with the Greek salad. There was a huge amount of veggies in the salad and the dressing was delicious. The pulled pork was flavorful and tender, many went back for seconds! We are still eating the leftovers. There was plenty of food and the price was fair. Pickup at the restaurant was smooth and enjoyable. I appreciated having the crates carried out to the car. I would order from them again for a company event!
We ate here for the first time at the end of a work day and had the place almost to ourselves. The staff were very friendly and the food was good. Great onion rings and a very cute atmosphere.
Far and away the best burger in the city. The burger has the perfect amount of crispy char on the outside and juicy on the inside. The toppings are so well balanced and the burger is wonderfully messy. This place is always a delight to eat to at, but don't forget the milkshake!
For many years the White Star Diner was a mainstay of Winnipeg’s Exchange District. The diner was a little hole in the wall on Albert Street. It was mainly a takeout joint, with a limited number of seats. I had only been on one occasion and that hadn’t been enough to convince me to go back.
Went to White Star on opening day with my husband- we have had take out from the original location so we knew it would be good. We wanted to try new stuff, so I had the shrimp Po'Boy with slaw and hubby had the Pulled pork Grilled Cheese on Rye with fries and a cup of Beef Barley soup to start. We were both blown away by the flavour of the soup- it was served in a coffee mug and had an intensely beefy and herby flavour, it was so good.
The pulled pork grilled cheese was excellent- the bread held together perfectly and was grilled just right, the meat and cheese were tender and gooey, just what you would want in this type of dish. The fries were a great side- hot, crispy on the outside but soft inside.
I loved the Po'Boy- the shrimp were crispy and the bun was fluffy yet held together really well. But the thing that MADE this sandwich was the remoulade- OMG. It was so delicious that we both agreed we pay extra to have a side of that stuff for dipping fries in. I'm not usually an aioli person but this remoulade is making me rethink that. It was just excellent and it's my new favourite sandwich. The slaw was a nice side with the sandwich, it was crisp yet light and creamy.
Finally, I had a White Star milkshake for the first time and I will from now on always order one- I had the Chocolate Raspberry Balsamic- it was thick, creamy, and kept getting more delicious with each sip.
The decor is classic and clean- walking in the door you will feel like a regular at a stellar joint. I can't wait to go back and try more.
Excellent home made food. Friendly, fast service. Best milkshakes in the western hemisphere. A must go to place. Menu has expanded from the Albert location. But kept all the original items. DEEEEELICIOUS!!!
The new White Star is open. Was there on its third day. The decor is very clean and dineresque. Open kitchen. Lots of ocean liner memorabilia on the walls. I had the chicken souvlaki with a Greek salad! The chicken was sooooooo good. Moist and marinated very well. Lots of feta on the salad....some mix greens and lots of peppers/onion/cucumber. I sat at the counter overlooking the kitchen and watched other meals get made and go out to tables.......it all looked amazing!!!!!!! Large servings going out hot and looking delish! I will definitely be back. So glad Bruce has reopened!
Oh this place is so great. They have so many options (the mortimer is so tasty) and they have really tasty shakes. It's a little pricey for lunch but the potions are HUGE and you will not be disappointed.
Oh my goodness, I can't get enough of this place. I love the milkshakes, so creamy and tasty. I crave their fried egg sandwich all the time! It's a must try. Fancy, higher end restaurants will never beat traditional, home-cooked burgers! I only wish this place opened on weekends! I go out of my way during the weekends to grab lunch from here, because it's so worth it :)
Ive been here a few times now. Love the freshness, and attention put into the food. Milkshakes are awesome as mentioned by others here. Ive tried a few different sandwiches and really enjoyed the Mushroom Bacon Cheese and the Pulled Pork.
Only negative for me is the lack of ability to really eat inside. This doesn't mean you can't... the seating is just very limited ( 3 or 4 seats ) and I find the stools uncomfortable.
Price is above what you would expect of the typical burger joints, but this isn't a typical burger joint.
Come for the food, not the seating.
Went there for lunch a few hours ago. Did not disappoint. Fresh homemade messy burgers. Awesome homemade double-cooked fries. Positively delicious! So full right now... nap time... zzzzzzzzz...
This food is exactly what you would want to expect from diners! The burger was freshly made and SO delicious. The toppings were perfect, wouldn't change a thing.
The fries were also great, the perfect type to smother with vinegar and ketchup
Definitely go to this (slightly) hidden gem if you're in the area during the day.
We have been meaning to try this place out for sometime, and yesterday was the day.
First off, we were blown away with the incredible selection of 'REAL' milkshakes! We had PB/chocolate and it was to die for!
After much consideration, we decided on the philly steak burger, a Reuben and of course the infamous poutine. We opted to sit outside on the patio chairs. The owner brought out condiments/napkins and even our meal to us! He Even checked on us to see how our lunch was!!
The food was incredible, service was top notice - I would highly recommend. I will more certainly be back.
Where are the pictures you ask? Are you kidding? Waste a couple mins taking pics and not eating that amazing food? Better luck next time with pics.
White Star never fails! Never! Definitely a hidden gem in this city. I do not get to go often, but whenever I go, it always hits the spot! The fact that it is a small, family run business makes it even better!
My favourite when I go there is the Patty Melted. The meat patty is well seasoned and juicy. Combined with mozza, caramelized onions and house 1000 island just makes it deadly good.
I recently tried their grilled cheese pulled pork.. and OH MY LAWD, sent me to heaven. Pulled pork was on point, succulent and tender, and the combination of cheddar and mozza in between well buttered and crisp rye bread was amazing.
Slimming milkshakes are delish too. But as good as it is to get a milkshake with their sandwhiches/burgers.. it could be too heavy, unless you are super hungry and ready to hit the bed after.
Worth food coma-ing for sure!
Unbelievably delicious!! Had the bacon mushroom cheeseburger and it was fantastic!! Also had onion rings and a chocolate shake, diner food at its finest!!!
Amazing service! Fast, friendly and DELICIOUS. My boyfriend had recommended it one afternoon for lunch, as of course, I couldn't decide what I wanted. He said I wouldn't be disappointed. Pulled up to the place and thought how small town it felt to me, it was small, but had so much personality, and coming from a small town in rural manitoba, I felt at home. We walked in, were greeted with smiles and friendly hello's. My boyfriend suggested the special, and I was all for it. Pulled pork grilled cheese with bacon...... I decided very quickly what I felt like eating. Our food was done in just a few minutes, and brought out to us at the little table outside in the sun. And from the first bite.. I'm telling you... No "small town" flavors here. This was the best grilled cheese I've ever had and I definitely didn't leave hungry. This place is A MUST TRY! You will not regret it. I'll be back to scope out the menu some more this weekend.
Great quality. I tried this diner today based on reviews from urbanspoon. I have to say the food and the service echoed the high rating. If you are looking for that fantastic burger and amazing fries, then give it a try.
Winnipeg in the winter - all you can do is stay warm and eat good food, right? Diet starts in the spring.... Here are some of my favorite places in Winnipeg...My other favorite lunch spot that I always try to drop in on when I'm in the city - the teeny White Star Diner...lovingly produces classic burgers and sandwiches that will make your eyes roll back in your head.
Sexiest poutine in Winnipeg, not to mention that owner/operator Bruce. This is hands down the best place for a poutine in Winnipeg. I mean sure the burgers are hand made fresh daily, and the fries are hand cut, and he roasts his turkeys for his clubs makes his milkshakes with real ingredients, makes homemade soups and slaws and SLOW ROASTED PORK (available on everything) and... Ok we get it, this place is hard to beat and there is a lot to like. But the poutine, OMG the poutine. Strap a pair of knee high boots and a halter top on this thing because there are fewer sluttier food items that are legally available around these parts. IF you genuinely want to change your perspective on amazing diner style food, then visit this place. You can see everyone loves it. If not for the amazing food, for the amazing, super awesome, friendly restaurateur Bruce. One of my favourite places ever.
We had cheeseburgers & fries for lunch today and it was great! Nothing beats a loaded homemade cheeseburger! Burgers are big and the fries are generous! Would have had a milkshake but to cold outside today!! We will be back again soon. Thanks Bruce.
WOW< GOOD STUFF. I visited the diner today for lunch. First thing, don't judge this place by it's looks.... Good thing come in small spaces... I ordered the Philly Cheese burger, with fries.... AMAZING..... HOT FRESH TASTY....... peppers onions and lots of cheese.... Fast service, This joint is a must .......
We had lunch here today, what a nice way to start holidays! The food is made from scratch! No pre made burger patties here. The bun was fresh nice fresh garnishes on the burger. A small Poutine is big enough for two to share. The pulled pork bacon grilled cheese is AWESOME, a must try! Great size portions good service with a smile! Excellent experience! See you again!
Small on space, huge on taste. I recently had lunch at the white star. Small Poutine and the pulled pork grilled cheese. Food was awesome! I've never had a sammy quite like the grilled cheese! Between the Poutine and sandwich I was absolutely stuffed. Very small space (a small counter at the window with 4 seats), really cool decor, (I love ships!!) and great service all added up to a very satisfying lunch. The only downside, when I left, my jacket and clothes smelled of deep fryer. Maybe cause the place was small and about 5 people ordered Poutine while I waited and ate, but I didn't smell very nice when I got home. Totally busted for eating a greasy, but great lunch.
I'll be back!
Love the White Star. I try to make it or to the White Star every time I visit Winnipeg. The best rueben, excellent pulled pork. Total guilty pleasure!!!
Twice IS Nice!. The first time I went to The White Star Diner I was totally blown away. I got myself the pulled pork grilled cheese with bacon and a "half" sized poutine. ( I say that because at most places their half would be other guys full size ). It was sooo goooood! oowey gooey yum yum cheese. Cheese CHEESE AND MORE CHEESE!!! Which I loved. I couldn't even finish my sandwich I took it to the movies with me and finished it there. The second time I went, (less than a week later) I badgered my sister into going with me. She had the mushroom burger with a half poutine. I had some and it was amazing. There is something about a burger cooked on a flat top, and that man knows how to make a hell of a burger! I had the Onion ring poutine. Yes ONION RING POUTINE! I am now ruined for all other poutine. Seriously I am never going back. We also had a milk shake. It was chocolate mint and made with real peppermint extract. Pretty sure the best milk shake either of us have had in a loooong time! People , listen up! If you want a real diner experience with real home made food. Nothing from a box, go to the White Star Diner. Also check out his website, he changes his specials daily and posts them online every morning.Cheers and Happy Eating :)
Consistent. Been here many times and the burger was always great. The owner has always been very friendly which is good for the business. Love the freshly baked cookies too!
Excellent. Great place... the burger and fries we had were simple, authentic and tasty... it's a nice little spot. I went with a group of friends and we didn't know it closed at 4:30. We got there at 4:35, the man working let us order and only took him 10-15 mins to make the 6 orders. We sat outside on the curb there and enjoyed our meal in the sun. Good experience for sure.
Had the rueben. Sooooo fantastic.
Oh Em Gee!. Wow. This place is awesome! Ordered the White Star Burger and half order of fries to go and enjoyed chowing down on them at Old Market Square. The fries were fantastic, crispy and had a wonderful seasoning to them. The burger was awesome! So tasty, and SO messy. Be sure to grab extra napkins.
One more thing... my bill came to a total of just under $10. Well worth it.
Stop in here sometime, you'll love it!. I've been here on a few different occasions. The first time I went in I was looking for somewhere quick to grab a sandwich and a drink without having to wait to be seated by hostess, wait for the meal, and pay more than I think the food is worth. Aside from going to Portage Place mall, I find it difficult to find a place that is quick, satisfying, and has decent prices in the downtown/exchange area.
The first item I ever ordered here was a half bag of fries, a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich, a kosher pickle and a drink. The fries are twice fried potato skin fries and are delicious. I took the cook at his word that a half bag was probably enough for me, and it was more than enough with the sandwich. This was an excellent Philly sandwich. I know a lot of argue over where to get the best one, I don't seek out Phillys, but the ingredients were quality, the smell was intoxicating, and I would have been begging for a bite if I was watching some one else eat this... I absolutely love the over-sized kosher dill pickles! I think they are a great idea.
Second time I ordered the grilled cheese and tomato sandwich ($4.95) a half bag of fries & a kosher pickle again. There are so many more items I want to try on his menu and I will be going back. The only thing that disappoints me about going here is that there is no coffee available, also no energy drinks.
There are about 4-5 barstool seats along a counter style table facing out onto the street. If you take your lunch break with a large crowd you could run into problems, take out is quick, and the place is clean.
The cook is also the one who takes the orders and I found him very helpful answering my questions, and he was very polite and patient with me.
Nevermind your arteries, you don't like them anyway.. Oh, hello Urbanspoon. We need to talk about the White Star Diner.
Specifically: we need to talk about how delicious it is. About how almost every item on the menu is dripping with three things: juice, grease and love. The latter comes via the very pleasant owner, who can usually be found managing the till and cooking all the food himself.
Look, there's not a lot of stuff on this menu that's healthy. There's a pulled-pork sandwich on grilled cheese with bacon; it is gorgeous and decadent and will drive your office-mates crazy just smelling its devilish aroma. The burgers are hearty and gooey with melted cheddar cheese, seasoned to perfection and grilled with care. The Reuben -- oh, Lord, I'm not sure there are proper words to describe the Reuben.
The fries are tasty and salty and slathered with grease. Squeeze some ketchup in the bag, shake it up and grab some extra napkins, because it's going to be messy -- but just try to stop.
The little touches remind you that this diner cares about their food. The ingredients are all top-notch: all of the meat tastes superbly fresh and well-chosen, the cheese is FULL-ON CHEESE. Sometimes, you can giggle at the sight of a whole roasted turkey chilling out in the cooler, waiting to be carved up and turned into something delicious and sandwichy -- no cruddy luncheon-meat here, folks!
Do realize: it's not necessarily the cheapest place to eat (a sandwich, side of fries and a drink will run about $15 with tax), and it's not necessarily the fastest, since the owner (and often another employee, probably a family member) are running the joint on their own. You can order in advance to help cut the wait.
But it's entirely worth it. Glorious, glorious indulgent diner food, made with real care and pride. I can't get enough of this place.
Finally got to try it!. I was walking through the exchange as I had just left a work meeting and saw that this little burger joint had the open sign on. I decided to go in and check it out as I was hungry, and it seemed that every time I walked by it was closed.
Was I glad I came. I ordered their namesake burger and fries, and the owner(I believe) was quite courteous and we chatted for a bit while he made me the meal. The patty was thick and juicy, and I certainly got messy. In the best way. There's only a few stools in the place to sit, but the owner was really friendly and he serves great burgers. I'll be coming back again!
Cute location on Albert is charming. Not much room to sit and eat but great take home. Burgers are fresh and tasty. The pulled pork is fine but considering it is their "bring them in" food, it is surprisingly bland. Worth a go.
So good! My boyfriend had been here before me, so I already knew I wanted the classic pulled pork sandwich. I moved here recently from a city that had a place that was "famous" for their pulled pork, but this was way, way better. The menu is huge though, so there should be something for everyone. He had a burger which was also great. They give you an insane amount of fries, which are delicious, as is the gravy. I would love to try the poutine next. It was busy at lunchtime so we had to sit outside, but it's a beautiful place to sit and eat. They brought the food out to us, and the cook (owner?) even came out to make sure we enjoyed everything. I will definitely be back!
My new favorite place to eat. Had never been to the White Star Diner before. I did my research before going. I knew I wanted to try the Grilled cheese pulled pork sandwich, the Reuben, and the Onion ring poutine. The grilled cheese didn't disappoint. It was so good! Now the Rueben is my favorite sandwich. It is the best Rueben I've had in the city. Next time I will ask for a bit more sour kraut. The onion ring poutine is good but I've found that I don't like my onion rings soggy. The onion rings are fantastic though. I'd order them plain the next time. There is love put into the food cooked hear. It tastes like someone cares about pleasing your taste buds.
Loved it. The pulled pork was great - tender and lean, just the right amount of sauce. The maraschino cherry milkshake was awesome - almost too big. Almost.
After getting through the construction I made it to the diner. Well worth it ! The Mortimer burger gives the VJ special a big run for it's money. A perfect blend of homemade ground beef patty covered in pulled pork dripping in cheddar cheese. Fresh crisp toppings round out this amazing creation. Highly recommended . I paired it with the house poutine which was a disappoitment ..soggy home made Fries in a little bit of mozzarella in average gravy. I'll be back ...for the burger.
Not bad.. I tried this place after getting off work early one day (pretty much the only way I'd be able to make it before it closes) and was satisfied with what I received. I ordered the Philly Cheese Burger and the flavour was certainly there and delivered as promised. The only knock against it was that right at the end of the burger I noticed a small piece of bacon in the toppings (which isn't supposed to be on the burger which is why I ordered it since I don't eat pork). It's a forgiveable mistake which I thankfully caught in time, but I would hope it wouldn't happen again (because I will be back).
The fries were alright, but I wish there wasn't all that refined salt thrown on them; I'll be sure to ask for unsalted next time because otherwise they were fine. The only real complaint I had against the experience was that I felt the food portion sizes were a little small (perhaps for a big 6'1/275lb guys like myself) and left a little more to be had at the end.
I'll definitely be back; it's certainly a great little burger joint for downtown (which is a little lacking for the city IMO), but not quite up there with my favorite stops like Dairy Delight or George's.
7.5/10
Best fries in the city, hands down. The White Star is pretty unique. Right in the Exchange, tucked away just enough that you might not notice it unless you were looking for it. The interior is tiny and cozy and that's a part of its appeal... just four seats in the place, all of them at the counter by the window!
I found the service to be quick and friendly, and the food was to die for. I ordered what I think was called the Mortimer burger... a burger with pulled pork on it! It was heavenly, and I can see why they sell their pulled pork by the pound in addition to on their burgers.
But the best part was by far the fries. Crispy on the outside, but like mashed potatoes on the inside. Perfect! The fries had a solid amount of salt however and while this is a plus to many (myself included) I just want to warn all you non-salt-lovers out there.
Pulled pork greatness. My wife and I walked here after going to the passport office. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful. I had the double oink a pulled pork sandwich with slaw and bacon. The bacon definetly put the sandwich over the top. We also shared a bowl of onion soup and half order of poutine which were both tasty and filling. We will hopefully be able to return to try some other items from the menu but it will be hard not to order the pulled pork.
Phenomenal Diner fare!. My husband and I were in Winnipeg searching for the perfect diner experience, and came upon the White Star Diner. Our first impression was to find another diner, as there was no real seating available. However a young couple who were also travelling from out of town encouraged us to stay. We decided to go for it, and boy oh boy - we were not disappointed! The owner was very gracious and accommodating, and our food was delish! We each had the pulled pork with slaw on a toasted bun with a side of the best fries I have had in a long time! I totally recommend the White Star Diner! The servings were huge, the food was home made, and the owner had a great sense of humour! Try it, you won't be disappointed!
Great Service.. I like the campiness of this place. The service was excellent! It's a short walk from the RRC campus on Princess. It's typical diner food, nice and greasy - really good hangover cure. It's a tad on the pricey side for my liking, but I liked the food so it's cool.
Also, there's not much room to sit, just a few stools so it's more of a grab and go type restaurant.
On more than one occasion I have used the double oink to cure friends of thier vegetarian ways. Same with the Ruben.
Awesome Burger. The burger was amazing. Not sure exactly why but it just tasted amazing! The fries were very soggy, I prefer crispier fries. Overall, the burger made up for the fries. Will go again just based on the burger and will try the poutine.
Awesome little place. The Burgers are homestyle and excellent! Fries and poutine are really good. Milkshakes are great but a little pricey. Owner is friendly. Will return again and again.
Excellent food. We went to this place and they good was great. Ordered the pulled pork sandwich and it was awesome. The owner brought out the food himself and even came over and asked how it was. Very friendly and will go back again.
Yum. I've never heard of this place prior to today. At the suggestion of my friend, we got lunch there and I loved it! I ordered the Pulled Pork & Slaw sandwich, as well as a poutine and they were both so yummy! I would probably try everything on that menu once. Will be returning for sure!
Its good but..... Based on reviews on this site I wanted to check this place out, I had there pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw, and a milkshake. The food was really tasty and the pulled pork was very tender, I like the fact he does use real ice cream for his shakes, not that crap soft ice cream most places use for probably some sorta short cut reason, but anyway. The only thing I think could be better are the prices, I would not mind paying close to 7 bux for a sandwich if it was piled nice and high, I was a tad bit hungry still after my lunch there. Over all the food is good, prices could be a bit better, maybe more combos on the menu would be nice.
Great Food. Have been to the diner twice. Love the pulled pork sandwich and the burgers. Delicious. You can sit out on the patio and people watch. The owner is very friendly. Come on people, lets support the local restaurants instead of always going to the chain burger joints that couldn't make a decent meal if their life depended on it.
Awesome!. A couple of comments on the other reviews...
- fries. They are not the same style fries you get most places, so keep that in mind. I think they are incredible though. If you find them too salty, just speak up!
- undercooked burger... this is definitely NOT the norm, if this happens to you, please let the owner know!
I love this lunch spot. The pulled pork is amazing (add bacon to make it a double oink... so good), the burger is the BEST non-greek-fat-boy style burger I've had in Winnipeg (this is an important distinction, since most of our burger places do the greek style fat boy). The clubhouse is great as well.
Try the poutine! It's really tough to find a good poutine in this city, but this is my favorite so far.
In the winter, he was doing soups and I hope he picks this up again in the fall. Another plus is he updates the Specials page of his web site daily with today's lunch special, including the soup of the day (when that was happening).
Please support!
Delicious!. Had myself the pulled pork sandwhich and some fries (home cut of course). Great pulled pork sandwich! The slaw doesn't overpower the sandwich at all.
My cohort had the Reuben and fresh strawberry milkshake. The owner made a point of telling him the strawberries were fresh. I got a huge thank you from my buddy when leaving the restaurant for bringing him... clearly, he was happy!
White Star Diner burger, YUM!!. This hole-in-the-wall burger place is the best so far! I love it, its so juicy and tasty on its own. The fries are good as well especially with malt vinegar and ketchup. Burger heaven.
Old Fashioned Burgers. I find the portions here very large - I'm always stuffed and if I wasn't watching my weight I'd eat here much more often. This place used to be called Big Al's Burgers and it was a disaster. The new owner is very friendly and hard working and did a huge - and I mean HUGE cleanup before opening the door as White Star.
Burgers are awesome. Heard good things about Pulled Pork and the fries are good too.
My New Favorite Lunch Spot!. I finally decided to give them a shot last week and picked up a cheesburger and fries and I have to say, it was pretty damn good. The portions are generous, the owner (don't know his name) is friendly and the food was very flavorful and fresh. An all around great experience.
I went again yesterday and tried the pulled pork and slaw sandwich. Oh my...this my friends is a 10/10. Easily one of the greatest, if not the greatest sandwich I've ever had. At $5.25 this is a steal and I would gladly pay double for this sandwich. The combination of the seasoned tender pork, bbq sauce and slaw make this an explosion of goodness in your mouth!
Alternating between The Lineup and the White Star Diner for lunches makes me a happy guy!
...you get what you pay for though, and my patty was wide and the cheese came off a slab, not squeezed out of a tube.
