Great coconut curry soup. Might be the best in the city. They have a small menu but haven’t tried anything I didn’t love. I recommend their red curry coconut soup, level 3 or 4 for spice. Also their mee krob is great, as well as their salad rolls.
Went with my sister last week for the first time (she has been here many times) and I was extremely pleasantly surprised with the freshness and quality of the food. We had rice spring roles you make yourself $8.95 for 5 (we shared this as an appie) my sister had the traditional mango salad (quite spicy) while I had the beef pad thai - it was ok but not the real reason for my review which is the AMAZING coconut cream soup. This is heaven in a bowl, it has chicken, veggies and just simply amazing on the lips, you simply can't stop eating this soup as it is so fresh and tasty. Also taste great once reheated. I highly recommend you try this place!!!
I have been enjoying Boun's for years. The green curry soup is wonderful comfort food. The mushroom basil is very tasty. The dishes have very interesting flavour nuances. Love the food.
Red curry soup #4 spice; green curry soup #4 spice; calamari; summer rolls. Always delicious. I wish the spice/heat was more consistent but they say it depends on with type of hot peppers are available. Service varies but for the most part is good.
I love Thai and order it almost once a week. We dined in the restaurant which was small but quite cozy. It was a Tuesday night and we were the only ones in the restaurant. I ordered the red curry soup and my hubby ordered a ginger beef stir fry. We also shared an order of the stuffed chicken wings, they were crispy and filled with a mixture of veggies and noodles. The peanut sauce that is served with them makes the dish. My soup was quite delicious, and huge for the 10.95 price tag. My hubs order however wasn't as good. The beef was tender and the veggies were crisp but it lacked any real flavour. Overall the experience was great and I definitely would go back.
So far I've only gone there for a quick lunch and only tried one dish, but food was tasty, service was fairly good and mostly importantly, they were able to offer some Gluten Free dishes. The server was not at all knowledgeable about gluten (he thought glutinous rice was not GF, an easy mistake to make if you're not familiar with the GF diet), but after a few questions and checking a couple of labels, I figured out that most of the menu is GF, or GF friendly. Adding this to my list of safe restaurants.
Boun's Asian Restaurant ranks highly as one of the better Thai restaurants in the city. Wrapping authentic flavours and fresh ingredients in a modern and clean establishment, Boun's should appeal to anyone looking for Thai cuisine. The cherry on top is the addition of Laotian specialties which work well to compliment the classic Thai dishes. Definitely worth a visit for anyone in the area.
It’s almost a year since I wrote a review of Vientiane Thai on Marion Street. Vientiane Thai is located across the street from Deen’s Caribbean. It also shares space in a strip mall with Lovey’s BBQ and Boun’s. Of the three other restaurant’s Boun’s is the most interesting, because they both feature Thai cuisine. Boun’s also features Laotian cuisine, but from what I observed it seems fairly similar to Thai. It would probably take someone with more expertise than me to distinguish them. Boun’s calls itself an Asian restaurant, and offers some Vietnamese dishes among it’s choices. However, when I ordered I went with the dominant theme. Generally a safe idea when you are in a restaurant that offers multiple styles.
This is my favourite place to go :) green curry soup & red wine is where it's at
Fabulous food and service!!!!. We popped by for lunch and arrived at 1:45. We hadn't realized lunch hours are from 11-2 (Mon - Fri), so when we got there the place was empty and they were obviously preparing to close. Notwithstanding, we were graciously greeted and seated and told it was no problem for us to order. My husband had been here before and recommended the summer rolls, the chicken satay and the coconut curry soup.
The summer rolls were very fresh and came with a light dipping sauce with chopped peanuts (not a traditional peanut sauce). It was a perfect compliment to the rolls. The satay is unlike any I've ordered at other restaurants. It has a crispy outer coating (but is not breaded). The menu says it is coconut marinated, but it has a yellow curry hue to it so I'm thinking there is some curry in the marinade. Whatever it is, it is spectacular. You get 4 generous pieces per order and it comes with the traditional peanut dipping sauce. I tried some with the summer roll dip, and to me, it was even better!
The coconut curry soup comes in three sizes. We were told small is good for two people to share. We ordered the medium because I wanted to have some leftovers and it was hard to leave any in the bowl! You have your choice of green, yellow and red curry and the spice level. We ordered green with medium spice. It was perfect - lots of flavour but with enough heat. You can also order rice to go with the soup. We ordered a small rice which was more than enough. A medium bowl serves approximately six of the small bowls they bring with the soup (including the rice). The green curry coconut broth is delicious and the soup has chicken, broccoli, red peppers, peas, and lots of other veggies. Lots of different flavours and textures.
I wanted to try the noodles, so we also ordered the Shanghai Noodles. We ordered the spice as medium and our server recommended we order it with beef, so we did. It was fantastic! Lots of thick noodles sautéed with cabbage, onion and a few carrots in a flavourful sauce. I did not find the dish spicy at all and I might be tempted to order it with a little more heat next time. The beef was so tender, it was hard to stop eating it even though we were full.
The dishes are generous sizes (we had lots to take home) and they have sauces on the table if you like your dish hotter than your companion and you are sharing. The service is wonderful and very helpful and the prices are incredibly reasonable. I would not hesitate to recommend it and I will definitely be coming back to try other items on the menu. In addition to starters, soups and noodles, they have rice dishes, stir fries, curries (including Matsaman), BBQ (shrimp, beef short ribs and boneless beef) and Laotian specials (the Laap salad sounds great - minced chicken or beef seasoned with ground roasted rice, vegetables, fresh herbs and spices). I would think it would be impossible not to find something you wanted to try on this menu.
Favourite Thai place in the city. Been here countless times now- have always had great service, and even better food.
This restaurant is a spicy food lover's dream. They don't underestimate on their spice levels- I easily order a 10+ anywhere else and it's just sort of spicy, but here a 7 on some dishes is a challenge for me.
Their Tom Yum soup and Pad Thai are excellent- definitely way more flavour than at their neighbour restaurant- Vientianes. My top fave dish is the green vegetable curry with chicken and veggies. The size of their portions is great for the price too. It's hard not to go here every day!
Amazing food...for takeout. Boun's has amazing food! The best green papaya salad I've ever had, the curries stir fries, and noodle dishes are all fantastic! We've been going here since before they sold their original restaurant (Vientiane) and moved a few doors down, it's always a treat. The atmosphere isn't great - very quiet so there is zero privacy for any conversation you want to have. I don't know why, but they never have any music or anything playing in the background. We stopped eating in but still get take-out frequently.
Love Boun's!. Boun's is just great. Food is great and extremely affordable with huge portions. Everyone who works here is so accommodating and friendly. We usually start off with pun yaw or crab rangoon. And then we share a green coconut curry soup and order it with 8 spicy and rice. And my boyfriend and I are stuffed. And it's so cheap! Definitely order more dishes to try other things as everything is really tasty, but be prepared to have leftovers. They are generous with portions.
Very good. I went here for the first time a couple days ago, not knowing what to expect really. I was very happy with the whole experience. The service was very friendly. The food was amazing. I don't usually order soup, but we ordered the green coconut curry soup with chicken and it was by far the best soup i have ever had. We also ordered the Chow Mien noodles and a potato curry dish. Both were very good. Will be going back very soon.
Delicious !!!. Dropped in on Saturday. This is a very clean, bright place and what amazing food. And the service was great as well. Even the owner popped by our table to see how we were doing.
We ordered a bowl of Pho, the chicken fried rice with 0 spice and the shanghai noodles with shrimp at a spice level of 7. The Pho was the best I've ever had in Winnipeg, the fried rice was excellent with super tender chicken and the shanghai noodles were superb with succulent, perfectly cooked shrimp. But for novices to this restaurant....BE CAREFUL....spice levels above 2 can be HOT HOT HOT Prices are very reasonable and portions are huge. Take home was a must for the leftovers.
Amazing food & Staff. I come here every so often for their Fried Wontons & Birds Nest W/ Chicken, I love their food it always tastes amazing and the staff is always friendly and enjoyable, I am going to have to open my mind one day to trying more things on the menu but i just LOVE the Birds Nest.
I recommend this place to everyone I know :)
Keep up the fantastic work Bouns!
If what I liked wasn't so delicious I would try way more items on the menu but I keep coming back for what i love. Red coconut curry soup (10) spring rolls and the chow mien is awesome. Boun and staff are a real pleasure. Love this place.
Delicious curries!. The menu here is a bit confusing as this restaurant calls itself an "Asian" restaurant. So which country in Asia? Well, I'd say foremost it's Laotian but Laos and Thailand share similar cuisine, so there is definitely the flavours and the heat of Thai food here. Then there's a few Vietnamese dishes and then the random Chinese dishes. Prices are very moderate and fair as most starters are $3-9 and most shareable entrees are $10-$13. I tried 3 curry dishes and they were all delicious! Definitely come here and order a bunch of dishes and share family style as they will bring you a big bowl of rice. You can order dishes here ranging from a heat quotient from 1-10. I have a high tolerance to spicy foods and eat spicy foods often so a "7" is perfect for a good hit of heat as I could still taste the food and not down water like crazy. I would order an 8 or 9 next time to see what that's like but I think 3 would be good for most palates if you don't eat spicy food that often and don't bother adding any heat if you can't eat spicy at all.
The "panang curry" ($10.95) with chicken has coconut milk curry with green peas and lime leaf had a great creamy texture but not a lot of complexity in the curry. Although I really enjoyed this dish, I preferred the other two curries more. The "basa curry" ($11.95) was recommended by the server and with good reason - it was so yummy! You can select red, green or yellow curry and I opted for yellow curry with a fillet of basa (a white fish) with vegetables. Amazing sauce - definitely try this one! The matsaman "potato curry" ($10.95) can be made with chicken, beef, pork or shrimp and is cooked in coconut milk curry with potatoes, nuts and basil. The beef in this dish was tender and flavourful - I really liked the crunch of the peanuts in this dish too.
The restaurant is located near Lovey's in the strip mall on Marion Street - there's very limited parking here so you might have to park on the street but there's plenty of free 1-2 hour parking on the street. The interior space here is bright, modestly decorated and clean. Food was prepared fairly fast and the service was very friendly and warm. A lovely place for lunch or dinner (plus some to take home if you order a few dishes to share).
St. Boniface favorite!!!. Bouns is by far one of my favorite places to eat. I crave their pad Thai on a regular basis. I enjoy a "kick" when it comes to spice, but with this dish I can only get a level 1. (spice scale 1-10). For appies we always order the spring rolls. Very fresh and delish with an amazing dipping sauce. The crab ragoons are amazing too! Imitation crab meat - perfect for me who is allergic to shellfish. My boyfriend gets the chicken chowmein - always amazing at a spice level of 3. Boun - the owner is most likely your server on a slow day... Soooo hospitable, funny and always checks in to make sure you have everything u need. Eat in or to go - both amazing!!!! Never had a bad experience and prices are fair and portions are huge!!! 10 outta 10.
We enjoyed a late lunch. Salad fills we're decent and noodles were fine. Service is ok but could be faster specially on arrival. Look forward to another visit to try a few more items
I'm a picky eater and I loved Boun's! My hubby and I went there to try it out after my mom told us to try it and I'm glad she did! We have a new favorite place to go. Now while the decor and look of this place may have you thinking other things- the food will delight you!
The spring rolls were crunchy chewy and wonderful. I had the birds nest with chicken and on the spice scale of 0-10 I chose a 2- normally the spicer the better for me but I wanted to taste the flavors this time. A 2 was perfect- had heat and zing but didn't over power the flavor of everything- my nose still was running :) makes me wonder what a ten would do :/
Hubby had the mushroom and basil dish, heat of 1 and ate it with white rice. Loved it. Portions are large, we couldn't finish. With soft drinks our bil was about 30 bucks. Great food. Good prices. Will be back!
Great food!. Really love this restaurant. If you like Thai food, its the best in the city that I have tried, and I have tried a lot. Really good food and very reasonable price to portion ratio.
Sometimes at lunch the service is a bit slow because of staffing, but overall i recommend 100%
Amazing soup. I never thought I would be blown away by soup, but Boun's changed that. The soups are spectacular as is everything else I've tried from here. The prices are Great ($4 for 5 spring rolls!) and the portions are very large. The restaurant itself is very clean and the owner Boun is a character who makes the dining experience very nice. One of my favorite places in the city and definitely worth checking out. Try the Soup!
Love love love it!. I love Boun's. Always great service, always great food, always a great price. What more can you ask for!? Try the birdsnest. Amazing.
I gotta say, food here is great. Well I should say what I have had is great. Summer rolls! I love them!! Wonton soup is good too. Also ur portions are a fair size. Overall I love the place. I have an issue with their hours though. Lately it seems that it is hit and miss if they are open or not. I approached the owner regarding the issue and he stated that they usually close between 2 pm and 4 pm. However I know I have been there other times of the day during which their posted hours said they were to be open and they were not. So honestly I have no idea what's up. Nonetheless, it won't deter me from going back. Not yet anyway :)
The best Chow Mein I;'ve ever tasted. The Apple Salad was also really tasty. A nice place, nice seating, and lovely lady who really looks after you. I'm tempted to try some other dishes, but the Chow Mein is so good, I might stick with that forever.
The minutes I walk into Boun's Restaurant knowing be bless with SouthEast Asia food whether be Chinese dishes, Thai or Lao.
Prices are fair and customer service is great.
The owner will go to extend to please you!
