Review Izakaya Edokko - Winnipeg

Betty La
Great little restaurant, only 2 tables but they take reservations so not crowded, local owner, very well trained at Sushi. Excellent food, friendly staff, clean establishment. Little Asian grocery store too. Limited capacity, masks must be worn when not eating.

This wonderful little restaurant and ultra mini store has limited parking and just a few tables. This restaurant might not be huge but the food is outstanding. The assorted Sashimi was incredible. The Tuna Gomae was excellent. The rolls were great. The quality of the ingredients is phenomenal. If you want great sushi come here.

This small restaurant is really a gem in Winnipeg. Great food, reasonable price for the quality and friendly chef and service. Sashimi was amazing, which we haven't had for a while since moving to MB. Will definitely come back to explore more dishes.

What a fantastic restaurant for authentic sushi. We had heard good reviews from friends. They have increased their seating to 5 tables from 2 tables with moving their grocery section to further back in the building. They also mentioned that the hours have recently changed - they are open later on certain days - I had posted a photo earlier today with the new hours. The Miso soup was delicious - it contained cooked large white onions which was new to me in a Miso soup. Tuna goma-ae is a favorite of ours - we loved the flavour of this one. Assorted Sashimi 15 pieces was perfect - we had salmon, fatty tuna, yellowfin tuna, surf crab, scallops, and tako (octupus). 2 different rolls we ordered were avocado and salmon, and avocado by itself. Excellent rolls. They provided a boiled water carafe so we could top up the loose leaf green tea pot at any time. Excellent cuts of sashimi, and the presentation was very good. We would totally recommend this place if you enjoy sushi. The grocery section has several cuts of salmon and tuna and other fish that you could potentially prepare at home for sashimi. Lots of Japanese foods available for purchase. We will go again. Staff were friendly and attentive. There are a few parking spots in the parking lot, and street parking is available as well.

From the cut of the sashimi and nigiri sushi, it’s apparent that the chef has been trained in a Japanese establishment. The rice in proportion to the fish is spot on. The fatty tuna nigiri will have me coming back for second next time visiting Winnipeg.

The price & quality just unbeatable! I buy their sashimi to eat at home sometimes because its so fresh and you can taste the fish oil and the texture is firm. Thats how you know it's fresh. The way chef handle the ingredient keep the food so tasty. I love the variety of authentic Japanese food at this place. Its my favorite sushi restaurant by far if you know how to enjoy the quality of fish. This is the place. Thank you chef for making delicious sushi all these years !!

Small grocery store with two tables inside. It's unassuming but the sashimi was on point. Honestly I'm a surprise it is as good as it is being Winnipeg. Right temperature, texture and properly cut. Even the wasabi was authentic from the actual plant root. This place takes there authenticity seriously so dont expect to find a spoon for your miso soup. Again excellent Authentic sushi, in Miami you would have to pay twice the price.

One of the best sushi places in Winnipeg, good quality fish and very good sushi rice. Love the Genmaicha so much that we purchased some. In our visit today everything was good but the most standout items were the Toro and Unagi nigiri! Staff were nice, service was fast, the mini grocery had a lot of interesting stuff. The only thing holding back this restaurant to be my top go to sushi place is the price, it is on the more pricey side specially for the serving size of their sashimi.

My husband and I have never agreed on Winnipeg's best sushi restaurant...until tonight. I knew as soon as I saw the pearly looking sushi rice that it was perfectly cooked. We ordered through SkipTheDishes about an hour before they closed and everything still tasted super fresh. The Kamikaze roll was to die for (I am super picky about this roll as it's my favourite) My friends have all dubbed me a sushi snob and this place surpassed my expectations. The prices were very reasonable and what I'd expect from a higher end sushi restaurant. You get what you pay for and it was well worth it. We will definitely be ordering again...and again :)

Best sushi place! I highly recommend the Pink Dynamite roll and the taro root ice cream for dessert. A truly must-visit place in Winnipeg!

Just ate dinner there last night, New Year's Eve, with 20 of my family. We prebooked the place n pre-ordered the dishes. Their private room is too small, nothing special with the food. I would rather get the sushi rolls from the grocery store. The sashimi were not fresh. We came a little bit late n yet the food came even later. The waitress was nice n apologetic with the screw up with our bill but it was totally annoying. I'm not just whining but for the amount that we paid $$$, I expected better food, better promptness of turning over the pre-ordered dishes n the room would have been more roomy too. Sadly, I would rather get my sushi rolls in any convenient store than here. Nothing special at all.

The best Japanese restaurant downtown. Service is a ten and menu is amazing. The ramen is a must whenever u eat here

Went 4 times and never been disappointed! I strongly recommend that restaurant for fresh sushi and awesome staff !!

It was honestly the best tasting sushi I've ever eaten, and the tuna nachos bring life to your taste buds. Everything was absolutely decadent while not being overly filling. Atmosphere of the bar was wonderful as well.

Miso Ramen was bomb dot comb, highly recommend the spicy miso ramen if you like having a slight kick to your soup. Takoyaki was a great hit with me, high recommend & also the mackerel sashimi for sashimi lovers! Definitely coming back to try the gyu tataki & other items!

Authentic Japanese cuisine and highly recommend! Truly delicious and fresh.

Hands down the best sushi I've had! The fish was so fresh and the portions were perfect! Full and happy!

Service was great, atmosphere was welcoming and portions for a Canadian appetite. Haven't had tonkatsu that good since Japan. Thank you for a wonderful experience and I will be returning.

My family and I went to Izakaya Edokko for dinner tonight and left unsatisfied. The decor was very clean, simple and modern. The food was very tasty and I don't dispute the ingredients are fresh but the price vs the portion size was disappointing. Their prices are comparable to Wasabi or Bluefish but the portion sizes were a lot smaller and the sashimi pieces were cut paper thin. The sushi rolls we ordered were falling apart, I think it was due to the lack of ingredients. The service was below average as we had to ask the server for the same items several times like soy sauce and hot sauce. We have heard a lot of good things about this restaurant and thought we would give it a shot but sadly, we will not be returning.

Really great ramen!! And the chicken Karaage was so delicious too. Perfect for a cold WInnipeg evening to warm you from the inside out.

Bob, Erin and I went August 15/17 for the first time. Agree with Erin that the food was great and seafood fresh! We'll definitely go back. Restaurant is clean and tastefully designed.

Love their teishoku (meal set) that comes with a main dish and various side dishes my favourite is "sashimi and tempura tei''. Authentic taste and look always make me feel like home.

We were seated and then our presence was completely ignored for over 15 minutes. No drink order taken. No water brought. Nothing. We left.
Kay Boychuk
I had the lunch bento with a phili and a tuna roll. Was really good! I'll go back.

Perfect! Fresh and tasty fish...and everyone is friendly!

Awesome dinner!! The poke tuna nachos were the most expensive item i ordered 😂 but it was delicious so it was worth the try. Should've said how much it came with , then again this place obviously to fancy for real messy nachos 😂 . This is where the $$$$ price comes in ! But not every item is expensive!

If you go here, get a Drink!!!! The Caesar had fresh ginger & pinnaple 😚 it was phenomenal 10/10 i love my Caesars. I tried my sisters mijito and i usually find them bland and not flavorful, but this one was spot on 👌

Rainbow roll was a huge favourite 😘 definitely coming back alone for a Rainbow roll and a Caesar.

ONLY THING I CAN COMPLAIN ABOUT, Is the tempura taste to healthy!!! 😂😂😂 i want tempura to be deep fried seasoned goodness in already used delicious oil. (Already knew this about the tempura but still got it again anyways)

It's hard to come by a place like this! It's no sushi train but it will do for now.

I also don't like rating on service, if they do good, tip them. If the food took to long , tip them, it's the kitchen backed up. If you are rude maybe they will be rude back 🤷 but if you believe they aren't doing their job and just ignoring you when it's not even busy don't tip them. at least it's not America.

After the night before a fail at getting ramen I came here to get some. I ordered the shoyu ramen and the chicken karaage the ramen was just alright there was lots of protein and veg but the broth was no very flavourful. The chicken karaage here was delicious cooked perfectly.

The price here is high but worth it. The food here is as good as the one in Japan. And so does the service. Everything here is really fresh and the wagyu with foie gras was probably the best piece of sushi in Canada. Gooooooood!!!!!!!!!!

I think the servings are really small. And to be honest, there was nothing really special with the sushi and the sashimi, or even the shrimp tempura. They seem to be overpriced. If you pay $18 for sashimi, you would at least expect it to be what you pay, right? But it was sort of disappointing, because I could go to a cheaper sushi restaurant and get even better food. I just feel like it wasn't worth the money. The ramen tasted like those ichiban/sapporo instant noodles you can buy at the Asian Noodle section of Superstore. What I'm saying is I felt like paying a $$$$-rated restaurant when the quality of the food was only supposed to be a $$-class.

The place was decent enough, looks like they just built it so they have new floors and tables. Again, a $$$$-rate restaurant but don't expect it to have like an ambience similar to something like "The Keg." You're sitting on tables where you can see everyone, the seats are not high on the corner tables. So again, what makes this place made me pay that price? Maybe rent is expensive in downtown, idk.

Service was okay, again nothing ordinary. It's a $$$$-rated in Zomato, but do not expect service as good as fine dining. A bit slow, only 2 servers taking turns. But because they were at least nice, I'll respect that.

Parking is free on the street after 5:30pm, otherwise, it's downtown, you pay and have to find parking.

The matcha cheesecake was awesome. Again, very tiny slice, size smaller than a tim hortons donut. But since it tastes good and it's matcha, I'd recommend that for desert. If you have a big appetite, you can't really share it on a date since it's too small.

Generally, I would say it's overpriced, and nothing really special.

Food was great. Service was good. My favorite is tuna tataki, just the perfect combination! Also, they have the best sashimi. The only reason why I gave this 4.5 points was the price. Otherwise, all was very good.

My hubby and I came here during their happy hour and ordered a few things off that menu and the New Style Roll. The food was great, the prices were definitely better during happy hour but the service was a tad slow considering there were only 3 tables when we arrived. It did get busier after we finished our food but still doesn’t explain why we barely saw our server. A different server had to sub in for him near the end.

Went for lunch and ordered the Karamiso Ramen... That was.... a mistake. The ramen noodle is nothing but an instant ramen noodle in disguise served with an extremely weak and underwhelm broth, coupled with a slim topping of menma (bamboo shoot) and ki-kurage (wood-ear) and bits of green onion. The ajitsuke-tamago (soft-boiled egg) becomes a hard-boiled egg instead. The only redeeming quality is perhaps the char-siu (pork slice) is good. All in all, extremely disappointed.

I’ve been making more use of the Millennium Library in the last little while, so I find myself traveling up and down the streets in that area a little bit more than usual. Recently, I saw signs for Izakaya Edokko, a new Japanese restaurant. A delightful little salad served as a starter each time I visited Izakaya Edokko.

I really wanted to like this place, as authentic and imaginative Japanese food in the middle of a continent is pretty tough. I had the agadashi tofu, a green eggplant with fish flakes, the rainbow roll and the godzilla roll, and a plum wine. The tofu was okay, but it's always a safe bet to be so. The eggplant was disgusting: both texture and taste were awful. The godzilla roll had bbq eel in it, which was oversalted and smoky and not at all nice in a roll. I felt like the chefs rolling it hadn't tasted it? The rainbow roll was highly unremarkable and more or less tasteless. My plum wine (Gekkeikan brand, which you can buy at the LC) tasted watered down. I went home and tasted from my own bottle just to be sure.
The service was a whole other story. The two servers were super lost from the get go, forgot orders, came and asked for drink orders separately leaving us confused. One friend ordered a dessert that, after twenty minutes, someone who wasn't our server came to tell us that they were out. Was very disappointed; if you want really good authentic Japanese food, go to Yujiro on Grant.

I've been here several times for lunch and dinner. I have to say this is the best restaurant for Japanese food in winnipeg. Even my picky kids love the food here. Fish and seafood are super fresh. Beautiful decoration and friendly services. I can't wait to go again.

We came here for here for happy hour. I wanted to try out their ramen specials and the sushi they were serving up. I had the black garlic shoyu and my gf had the karamiso. Highly disappointing ramen. We ate half of it and left the rest. The egg was overcooked, the noodles were overcooked and not chewy, and the slice of pork, which should fall apart delicious was gristly and non tender. On a positive note, the broth was very nice and the toro and big eye nigiri were nice and tasty. Oh, and the 5.5$ Sapporo wasn't too shabby either.
I think these guys are trying to jump on the yujiro ramen band wagon, but they don't even come close. I would come back here for rolls or sashimi or the 5.5$ beer but definitely not the ramen. Save your money and go to yujiro.
being a sushi and ramen addict this place was nothing extra ordinary. I do like the people though they were very welcoming. The restaurant itself was really nice it has a really modern feel into it.

Went specifically during lunch for the ramen. The decor is tasteful, the service is very attentive and the ramen was delicious. The yam tempura was a wonderful appetizer. Will go back for dinner.
Food Snoot
This was probably the second worst sushi place I have been to. It took 2 and a half hours to get our food, we ordered an awful eggplant dish that had fish flakes on it that was not listed on the menu, needless to say I had an allergic reaction to it and it overall tasted awful. Passed it around the table and everyone felt the same.Ordered drinks and it came out an hour later. The pricing is ridiculous considering you could go out and get better sushi at many other great restaurants for much less. I expect to have fresh green avocado in my sushi rolls, not browned avocado for a $15.00 roll. In the end, i will not be going back here as the service was awful and the food was not how it should be. . Don't waste your time, go somewhere better.

Came here for sushi but ended up getting udon and ramen cause it sounded so good! My opinion on soups is based on the broth and these broths for the soups were good! The udon reminded me of the famous narukame udon in Hawaii. The shoyu ramen reminded me of ichiran ramen shop in Japan. Overall really good flavours for their noodles.

This is literally a half a block away from my work. I have been meaning to try it since it has opened but never got a chance to until now. I've only seen pictures of Tan-tan men ramen online but this was my 1st time trying it and it was ridiculous. The broth, the noodles, the level of spiciness. Perfect. The staff was so friendly, and the sushi chefs said goodbye & thank you when we left. Best!

The best quality fresh fish. Masterful flavours. Huge selection of both traditional and new style dishes. Diverese menu with hot and cold appetizers, tempura, AWESOME bbq fish, stone grill beef (Ishiyaki), the city's best sushi and so much more. Its hard to keep track but I can't forget the delightful cocktails available from the lounge. Go here now!

Came here for lunch with co-workers. I heard this place just recently opened and is run by Chef Masa Sugita!!! He originally opened Masa on Pembina and later Yujiro on Academy/Grant. After hearing about their opening a few weeks ago, I made it an effort to give them a try.

Upon entering for lunch on a weekday, We were promptly seated and had our drink orders taken immediately. The Makunouchi Bento caught my eye and it seemed rather exclusive as they only make 10 a day! The Bento came with a really nice starter salad and miso soup. The Bento itself was beautifully presented and was very tasty. My only complaint is the portions could have been more generous.

The restaurant is nicely renovated and has a large sushi/raw bar. Will definitely come back for sushi!

Chef Masa has been away from the food scene for a while but has now recently opened up Izakaya Edokko downtown. This new spot is where the former Place Louis Riel used to have their restaurant - the Ground Floor. It's sort of an unusual spot but close enough for a walk if you're at the MTS centre as it's behind the library.

Now, when I first heard that he was opening up an Izakaya I was pretty excited as Winnipeg doesn't really have these places - Japanese gastropub of sorts that are abundant in Vancouver and Toronto. Usually they are loud bustling places with a focus more on smaller cooked bites and less on sushi. But Izakaya Edokko is actually more like Yujiro - his former restaurant on Grant (which is now under a different ownership) with nearly identical items and pricing. There are some additional items but essentially it's a sushi place.

The restaurant has been delayed and was supposed to open months ago but quietly had their soft opening on Dec 17. When we were there after the soft opening, it was fairly quiet as I don't think word got out just before the holidays. The restaurant's decor is beautiful especially the sushi bar where there's a serene iridescent wall and lighting. It's a real change from the Ground Floor. The large windows look out onto Smith Street, not the most beautiful but the food will distract you. There's even a bar area in the back and a private room.

All in all, the sushi and sashimi are all delicious. Fish was fresh and rice was a good texture.

TUNA POKÉ NACHOS ($8.50) diced tuna, avocado, green onion, sesame seed with yakiniku sauce on crispy nachos.
Toro nigiri ($2.80) each.
NEW STYLE ROLL ($16) chopped scallop, tobiko wrap w/ soy sheet, topped w/ fresh seafood & yuzu tobiko on top
Saba nanban zuke ($8.80) - spicy tuna in a cucumber wrap
Spicy Tuna Maki ($5.30)

Service was extremely friendly though a tad slow. Overall good place, I hope they move towards more of an Izakaya feel in the future.
