This place was great!
What a nice way to experience fine dining while participating in a students learning experience.
The service was perfect and timely, everyone was so polite.
The food came out at a good speed and the flavour was on point!
The prices were very reasonable for the portions and preparation of the dishes.
When we were done and ready to go the instructor came over to us to ask about our experience. She mentioned that the students who prepared our dinner were brand new to this version of the menu. We had no idea they hadn't been doing this for weeks already.
I highly recommend checking this place out. It's a great experience.

Very impressed by our first experience at Jane's. Enjoyed a three-course meal of roasted beet and rhubarb salad, mushroom risotto and tiramisu panna cotta for dessert. All dishes were expertly and elegantly prepared by the students in the kitchen and our student server was polite, professional and prompt in all regards. The restaurant itself is well appointed in its design, welcoming and warm and the open kitchen atmosphere is engaging to watch. We will definitely return soon - hopefully to try their dinner offerings.

About 20-30 for just the meal. Smallish portions, but the quality of the ingredients is great. Most servers and chefs are RRC students and the menu is always changing.

After frequenting the downtown/exchange district for years scoping out new up-and-coming restaurants I finally made an unexpected trip to janes. It was a trip worth making and one I intend to make again. Set in a beautifully restored building, janes seeks to please. As a culinary school -nothing but perfection is delivered. From exceptional service to perfectly cooked food, with just the right amount of seasoning, to the creamiest of cappuccinos; I was left satisfied.

Can here for dinner with the family. Service was very attentive and the restaurant interior was very well appointed. The ambiance and decor really blew me away as we entered the restaurant.

Food was definitely interesting. I ordered the pan seared scallops to start and then the Vegetable Wellington. My wife got the short ribs. Both meals we're very tasty. For the price, the meals were a tad small, but definitely A+ for flavour.

Apparently the staff are mostly students studying culinary at the Red River College. Glad there is a means for them to practice what they learn.

Jane's is an opportunity for students to practice and perfect their cooking techniques. Classic and innovative dishes are offered in an elegant historic building that has been renovated into a beautiful restaurant. The service is excellent while the food was overall a delicious surprise. If you're looking for a contemporary fine dining experience in The Exchange, consider Jane's.

The restaurant is absolutely beautiful, like something you would see in a movie with tall ceilings and great acoustics. They brought out delicious complimentary fresh breads with herbs and cheese, butter and fig spread. Had spätzle for an appetizer, and pork belly with scallops for the Main. Both were delicious, and the portion sizes were on point. Got the baked Alaska for dessert, which was a little heavy on the meringue (I've had better) but they prepared it at our table, which was a neat experience. I was very impressed with the dinner overall, and the students at RRC did an excellent job. What a great concept.

This place blew away all my expectations. Make the reservation and head down for lunch. I had the french onion soup and the brown butter fish. The soup was rich and flavourful. The fish was perfectly cooked and it wasn't overly heavy or greasy with the butter.

Jane's is unlike anything I've experienced in Winnipeg. The service is like something out of a 5 star resort. Your dishes all arrive at the same time, and servers line up at the door as you leave to say goodbye. The building is stunning and design is impeccable. Our table was way too large for our group and the chairs were very far apart, which was puzzling.

I had the gnocchi and it was really delicious. The menu is small and carefully crafted - but this is not something I prefer. It isn't great to have an event here when there is only 1 vegetarian main dish option.

With these small complaints aside, I would definitely return as the service and quality of food was so great. I hear they switch up their menu quite often.

Great atmosphere with the old bank archatecture, unique in Winnipeg. Had the lamb shank and the Pad Thai. Lamb shank was tasty and fall off the bone tender. Pad Thai was a little different than we've had in the past but still very good. I take it the servers as students are just learning as well as ours made some little mistakes considering the fine dining atmosphere they strive for. For example asking every time if we wanted our wAter topped up. Water is just topped up without the need to ask. She also came to check on us way to often and spoke way to quiet. But sure with more time they get better. The food quality more than compensates for the rookie service.

Loved it!. Sept 12 - We were not sure what to expect since we had never been to this restaurant before and we were more than impressed. The dining room itself is amazing, they have kept all the old architecture alive which leaves you with a feeling of nostalgia for days when beauty in the details were foremost. The service and table settings were synonymous with fine dining. The meal was prepared by 2nd year Red River students and was delicious. This was their first time doing a buffet style dinner and I would say it was a success. I loved it because we were able to try so many things. There were so many things to try that I can't remember them all. The buffet them was "Canadian". You start off with pre-meal items, with a large selection of breads and condiments for the bread, salad, pasta salad, potatoes salad, cucumber salad, each with their own unique dressings and preparations. There were three different pates, Italian sausage, salmon and shrimp appetizer, marinated mushrooms, the list goes on... For the main meal there were fresh made perogies (the best I've ever had) pan fried in front of you, wild rice, roasted root vegetable, fall off the bone ribs, pickerel cakes, tourtiere (with an amazing crust) pork loin stuffed with corn bread which could be topped off with a mushroom gravy. For dessert there was bread pudding, pecan cake (it was light and moist it just melted in your mouth), Chocolate cake (not your ordinary cake, but I can't remember the official name, chocolate mouse, crepe suzettes covered in Grand Marnier and a wonderful sauce, butter tarts, etc.. All of this was at an cost of only $28.95 per person. There isn't any place in the city you could get this quality food at this price.
Each and every one of these dishes are fresh made that day and all have unique and flavorful sauces and spices. The instructor, Michael, stopped by our table to ask us how everything was going and to see if were enjoying our experience. We assured him we were and that we would be back!

Perfect lunch date with my wife. My wife and I decided to check out Red River College Advanced Culinary Arts Lab (A.K.A Jane's restaurant) in the Patterson Global Food building downtown. We went for lunch on Wednesday and had the special. The way it works is each student has a day where they have to create the daily special, have they Chef (instructor) taste/evaluate it and with his/her approval, serve it to the lunch crowd. It was porc tenderloin with Bison meat in a blueberry gastrique sauce with Gnocchi potatoes, some sort of squash and a stuffed zucchini. Oh! My god was it ever good. My compliments to the cook of the day. Your meal rocked and it was very cheap compared to what we would have paid at 529 for example. Yes I said 529 because Jane's is in the same culinary class in my opinion.Oh! And by the way, the student who was the Chef of the day (not the cook) came to ask us about our meal and we thought it was an excellent touch.

Foodgasm. Why, oh why did we wait so long to try Jane's? And now that we have we are already planning to go back within the next two weeks!
Our lunch group of 4 was expecting the experience to be interesting and decent, but never had we thought it would be so exceptional. We each had something different...and what a beautiful selection of dishes. Everyone raved...my risotto, the scallops, salmon, the presentation. Each meal came on a different style of plate; the fresh bread basket with 3 varieties and two types of butter.

The oh-so-sweet, attentive and pleasant student servers, surreptitiously surveilling our table for any sign we needed attention. The chef who visited us during cappuccinos and earnestly wanted our opinion and was as elated to receive our words as we were to impart them.

Oh, and the crème brulee? OMG, done 3 ways in 3 beautiful pots, citrus, green tea and chocolate ginger. I begged them to sell it for take out. I have NEVER had it so light, so perfectly textured and so tasty.

Aside from our little lunch group, will be enjoying dinner here soon too with hubs. He can't wait.
What a treasure is this culinary school restaurant. There's many established Winnipeg eateries that could take a page from their performance...in every aspect.

Decadent Dining. Jane's is set in an ornate, high ceiling room with an open view of the kitchen and students at work. Right away our jackets were taken and we were seated. The meal started off with a delicious bread basket and flavored butters. Since the menu changes seasonally I won't comment on what we specifically ordered, except that everyone enjoyed their meals and the portions were generously sized that an entree alone is more than enough. Overall, the attentive service, the setting and small touches made it feel like a fine dining atmosphere, but with reasonable prices. It was very entertaining and distracting facing the kitchen, since it was hard to look away from the action.

Amazing!. Fantastic service, amazing food, reasonable prices, wonderful atmosphere...what more is there to say! This was my second time at Janes, the first being in April, and this time was even better. This was the first time for our friends and they were not disapointed. We ordered one of every appetizer - small portions for sharing with a group of 5, but made up in flavour. We all but licked the plates clean! From the appetizers, to soup, to the main course and dessert we were treated to beautiful plating and amazing flavours! This is now one of my favorite place to eat and can't wait until they open up again in January!

Lovely Fresh Flavors. Jane's is a new downtown restaurant, situated at RRC's brand new campus for their Culinary Arts Program; the students themselves run the restaurant (with instructor supervision).
We arrived right on time for our 11:30am reservation and while there was some confusion and disorganization as to where we would be sitting (we were the only ones in the restaurant), we got seated several minutes later. I have to say the amibence is beautiful--high ceilings, large windows, very open.
The lunch menu is short but decent. To start we received a bread basket filled with buns that you could tell had been baked only a few hours ago. They were super fresh and the hummus they were served along with was garlicky and delicious as well. For lunch my mom had a salad with Apple, Frisee, and pungent Blue Cheese and a bowl of the Thai Chicken Soup. She said the soup was rich and satisfying and thoroughly enjoyed her salad, which for a half size portion was fairly large.
I had the Chickpea salad, which was literally a Greek Salad (tomatoes, olives, red onion) with tonnes of chickpeas. It was fabulous! The vinaigrette had hints of cilantro and lemon. The dish was very fresh with lively, bright flavors (and vegan to boot!). I would definitely order this salad again, and for under $8 it was a huge portion and easily a bargain.
Service was excellent throughout our meal. As soon as I had taken a couple of sips from my water glass, the server was tableside topping it up.
I had a very enjoyable lunch and would come back again. It is a shame that with such lovely food and a beauitful atmosphere they close in early May for summer holidays. So get there while they're still open!

First class - literally and figuratively. I had dinner with friends at Jane's last night, and it was terrific. The former bank has been beautifully restored and decorated. The long marble counter that once separated tellers from clients now delineates the open kitchen space where you can see the student chefs preparing everything. Wrought iron elevator doors have been re-purposed as room dividers that offer elegance of a bygone era and a touch of privacy in the soaring, ornate space. ALL of our food was delicious, with lovely presentation by enthusiastic, friendly student serving staff. It wasn't the speediest meal, and the students are still learning, but we were in no rush and it was worth the slight wait. I gather the menu changes from week to week, so who knows if the delicious steak I had will be there when I return (and I will definitely be returning) but I am okay with that too as all of my friend's meals also were excellent. The menu even made a tofu dish sound good. The open concept kitchen is a bit noisy at times with some equipment, but that's to be expected and wasn't the least bit bothersome in my view. It was like watching an episode of Top Chef or Hell's Kitchen without the screaming antics of prima donnas or a Gordon Ramsay (thank heavens!). This is Red River College's Hospitality and Culinary Arts program's class room, and it appears to me that they're teaching and learning all the right stuff! Yummy!

Ok, this is a great GREAT place. It's a training restaurant for Red River College's food services courses. The building is an historically important and beautiful building. It was an old bank and the restaurant is in the old public hall of the original bank, beautifully restored. (There is an additional fun historical connection as the International Brotherhood of Magicians was founded in the building last century, for anyone interested in magic. ) The arrangement is to train food workers to work in 5 star elite restaurants so you are getting served by students under their teacher's supervision. The place is great, the service is wonderful, not always formally correct, (they might clear from the wrong side, or forget to mention today's special or something, and a quiet comment will waft through the air to remind them of correct protocol ) and the food is Devine. Sometimes there are experimental or very innovative dishes that the students have thought up and the results are fantastic. Today someone created mushroom chips, lightly seasoned and sauteed slices of mushrooms baked till crisp and crunchy, which were used to garnish a wonderfully rich tasty mushroom soup. My partner and I tried the pickerel and flank steak and we both loved them. We started with the mushroom soup, and the minestrone. As mentioned the mushroom soup was top notch, the stock of the minestrone was excellent, and the bits and pieces included chunks of chicken and cheese tortellini. Absolutely wonderful. Served with a selection of fresh baked bread and herbed butter it was a good start. The main courses were well cooked, very tasty and cooked perfectly. I had the flank steak, medium rare and it was juicy and perfect. Served with a special sauce ( super gravy dating to medieval french cooking techniques) and a very nice form of potatoes that were a cross between french fries and roasted potato wedges. The veg was string beans cooked perfectly. I enjoyed every byte. My partner had the pickerel and even though I am not a big fish fan I found it light and delicate with an interesting sauce. The mixed vegetables were well done and I will cheerfully try to emulate that side dish. Dessert was the chocolate chiffon with pickled raspberries, and the creme caramel. Both were delicious and interesting. I do not like raspberries, and frankly they tasted like lightly vinegar flavoured raspberries, but the chocolate was smooth and rich and light. The only complaint was the crumb crust was a touch tough as it was a bit too thick, but great taste. The caramel was another innovative approach, not a creme brulee, but garnished with sugar glass fibers they had a crunch that made it a cross between both. All in all, the price was good for the lunch I got, and I will definitely come back for a whack at the other dishes. Note though that the restaurant is open as part of the academic session, it is only open for another 5 weeks before shutting down till the next session. Check their webpage, and reservations are a must. Although it is a very fancy restaurant it is not enforced formality, casual dress is acceptable. There is parking around the place, but it is right on main street on the #18 route. This is a great place and I look forward to going again.

Fine dining at a discounted price! We had a wonderful first experience at Jane’s. The students are very attentive and eager to please. The food is decadent and the cocktails are equally tasty. The menu changes every few weeks so be sure to check online for the current menu. Looking forward to our next visit!

Absolutely wonderful venue for private functions! The culinary arts students are very motivated and creative - intent to impress! The kitchen team was a delight to work with and were spectacular at accommodating a variety of dietary restrictions without any hiccups in service. A lovely building with a beautifully appointed venue, and very reasonable rates.
