Hai Shang has the best soup dumplings! We love coming here and usually take people from out of town when they come in. The food is always delicious. We usually get soup dumplings, jellyfish, lemon chicken, shrimp with vegetables, and we'll try a new dish too.
The shrimp tastes so fresh and juicy. The soup dumplings are very tasty.
Everyone who works there is so nice and always remembers us, even though we don't go in that often.
Fantastic soup dumplings! I think they are only available on the weekend but wow. The service was also superb, with an owner coming and speaking to our table about recommendations based on our preferences and cravings. Excellent all around.
One of the best Chinese food restaurants in Winnipeg. Very far down Pembina almost at the perimeter. Parking is free but not a lot of spaces, but street parking closeby. Service always friendly and attentive. Our large takeout order was ready on time and we got an extra pork dish for free because of how much we ordered. Sauces are excellent. Their crispy ginger beef is well prepared but they should use better quality beef, otherwise, dinner was excellent. We would definitely order from there again. OK for eat in, clean and basic, and able to handle large groups.
Very very good food and very nice hosts! My personal rating is higher than a 6. Very helpful with choices if you ask , their food is fresh and flavourful. I have never had a bad meal here and I’m a regular of 7 years. If your looking for authentic Chinese this is the place, the bigger places lose their quality control but this small but bizzy place is always spot on. The hosts and chef are one hundred % great ! Try here you will not go anywhere else after! My favourite eggplant hot pot - garlic galane!
Went here to try out the soup dumplings I had seen all over social media. The restaurant was empty when we went and an older woman was out server. She assumed we had come for soup dumplings. We ordered a couple (one for myself and my friend) and to try something else different, we ordered the jelly fish. I have never had jelly fish before. The texture was weird but not off putting and it tasted pretty good. I may not Order again but it was good to try something new.
I had never had soup dumplings before and our server was kind enough to show me how to eat them. They were good. Nothing amazing but good. Our server treated us like we were guests in her home. She was literally the sweetest server ever. We tipped her well for it and she was sooo nice she said “oh no too much” and ended up running outside to give us cans of coke 😂😂 lol. Will return soon.
First time and it didn't disappoint! When I heard they have Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings) I got excited to come here.
When we arrive, they're still closed (they close between 2:30-4:30pm) and we got there almost 4pm but the owner still entertained & welcomed us. We ordered their Chicken Chow Mein & Xiao Long Bao (8 for $8.85). Everything was good! Although I thought the dumplings would be bigger, they're the perfect size for me, the soup inside was really rich and flavourful and the filling was tasty as well. Their Chow Mein was good too and noodles were perfect for me.
Service was fast and friendly! Clean place too.
Would definitely come back and have Xiao Long Bao again and probably try their other menu.
Hai Shang is unique in Winnipeg as the only Shanghai-nese restaurant in town. And yet they do not rest on their laurels but instead serve great authentic Shanghai cuisine, led by a great version of Xiao Long Bao soup dumplings. And while the menu is diverse enough to accommodate Cantonese and Western style palates, you would be remiss to miss their Shanghai inspired items. An easy recommendation.
The place is very clean, always friendly and reasonably priced. The owner treats you like you're family and the food is great so why go anywhere else?

This is our go to for take out. We live about 30 mins from Winnipeg and order from here every chance we get. Been to many Chinese restaurants in Winnipeg this is top of our list!
I have gotten takeout on numerous occasions and the food has always been fresh and excellent. I have eaten at a lot of Chinese restaurants across Canada and this one has proven very good time again. As others have stated already, the Crispy Ginger Beef is worth the try.
Went here twice, once for the lunch buffet and again for dinner. I liked both. For lunch, there's lot's of food to choose & for a reasonable price too. You can have; soup, spring rolls, ginger beef, noodles, chicken, etc. ...For dinner I had the Chow Mein and some Tofu. Both were really nice, (although the chicken was boiled, so lacked flavor). My friend had hot honey garlic chicken which was awesome, and a beef noodle dish, but we weren't too impressed with the beef quality. Which was odd, because the beef at the lunch buffet was fine... Otherwise, this place is 100% clean and totally family run. I'll definitely be going back, (but I won't go for those beef dishes during future dinners).
Up-Date November 2015:
Went again for the lunch buffet. It is still AWESOME. Love this place!
Love this restaurant!. I had to write this in response to this review "Not sure how you have 87% DINER FROM WINNIPEG • Spearson0714"
Either you are reviewing the wrong restaurant, or you just don't like Chinese food. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Favourites are the spicy fish Hotpot and the green bean dish from the "Special Menu". Also the deep fried duck is excellent. Never had anything disappointing from this place.
Great Buffet Lunch. I have been many times with family members and friends for the lunch buffet over the last few years and it is definitely worth the trip. Being recognized, we are always warmly greeted. The food is quickly made fresh to replace anything that has been consumed. We are always encouraged to eat more... Great value. Supporting a local mom and pop operation that create a consistent high quality variety of excellent food seems like a superb choice. Look for it in the Newdale Mall on the west side of Pembina Hwy.
Love it!! Best chinese food to date!!!
Tried This place for the first time for take out. I live nearby and heard great reviews. First off the service was super friendly and helpful as I wasn't in the mood for meat and was looki g for a recommendation..i had the deep fried tofu with Chinese mushrooms and veggies minus the beef. Super delicious.
Look forward to going back. Very Clean restaurant as well.
We placed an order for delivery on Thursday night, and we were very happy with it. It arrived on time, price was right, and each of the dishes we tried were very good. Our favourites were the Shang Hai noodles and the Kung Bo!!! A little spicy, but very good! We'll probably order from here again sometime.
Yum!. My dad and my brother didn't like it because the portions are "small" (what, I know) but my partner and I thought it was just right and on par with other Chinese restaurants in the city. Their house special fried rice is very delicious, as is their house special chow mein - lots of seafood! Their beef stew with tofu is very tender, tofu is different from other places that serve the same dish, and the sauce was very aromatic and did not have that obvious MSG taste. Their steamed chicken was OK, nothing to write home about and their spicy salted shrimp is pretty good too.
The prices are fair for what you get. The service was decent and I think we will be back to try their xiao long bao. They have an interesting menu that is different from other places. It's not your typical Westernized Chinese fare unless you want it to be.
A hidden gem. We attended December 30 for dinner. It is a very clean and quiet restaurant that is family run. The serving staff were friendly and attentive and refused to let our tea or waters get lower than half full. The meals were exceptional and well served.
The no doubt home made hot sauce was also exceptional with a truly unique taste.
The atmosphere was welcoming and laid back, a nice place to eat.The leftovers were packaged quickly after the bill was presented.
We will be back soon to sample other dishes.
Best Food Ever. My boyfriend and I go to this restaurant at least once a month. The food is amazing could not have asked for better food.
The people are very friendly , the owner is a very nice lady who knows us almost by name because we have been going there for so long.
Authentic and Delicious!. We tried this place for the first time the other night for dinner. The owners were very friendly and attentive. We had the pork steamed buns and shared a large bowl of spicy noodle soup. Our food came very quickly and we were so full by the end. The prices are very reasonable for the portions. Apparently they have a buffet for lunch with 14 different options. And the owner told us that Sunday lunch buffet is special...we'll go check that out next time.
You Must Try This Chinese Food Institution. I tried this restaurant after Marion Warhaft from Winnipeg Free Press recommended it.
I can't recommend this restaurant enough. I am a trained chef, and I wish I could cook traditional Chinese like Chef Bai Rong Shen. His understanding of his dishes are sublime, presentation is excellent, vegetables are cooked PERFECTLY. I wish he was my dad, I like it so much.
Every time I go I have something different, and I haven't been disappointed yet. The green bean dish, with bits of pork tossed in a delicate broth is so good, it reminded me of my grandmothers farm. The breaded fish fillets were cooked so beautifully I ate until it hurt. And I don't eat fish. Ever. Had a burger at Joey's Only, seriously. But it was so good I will order it the next time I go. No fishy taste, perfectly cooked, delicious breading. No contest.
I could recommend anything on the menu. I'm not a fan of eggplant, but the eggplant hotpot was the best eggplant I've ever had. Ginger fried beef? Tasted like meat donuts, with a perfect amount of spice. Did I mention they make their own hot sauce? Its so good I wish they sold it at the door, flavorful and complex without blowing the top of your head off.
The woman that runs front of house, Yan Yan Shen, is friendly, enthusiastic, and genuinely enjoys what she does, which is introduce western palates to expertly cooked Shanghai-style Chinese cooking. She makes me feel adventurous, is patient in explaining the dishes, and I have never been steered wrong by her suggestions when I told her what I wanted.
Highest recommendations possible, best Shanghai style Chinese restaurant in the city, great value, large portions, easy to make reservations.
If I spoke Wu dialect Mandarin, I would be working there. You gotta eat here.
Excellent!. As someone who frequents many Asian restaurants, I have to say that amongst Chinese restaurants in Winnipeg, this is my favourite hands down. Aside from the more Americanized types like crispy ginger beef and lemon chicken, their authentic chinese foods are to die for such as the spicy eggplant hotpot, the "special fish", and spicy deep fried tofu.
Great meal!. Really liked this place! Some great Northern Chinese dishes and friendly, helpful staff. Still dreaming about the Soup Dumplings - a must try. Deep fried duck is terrific. Shrimp in Spicy S&S Sauce - PERFECT texture and great flavor. Loved the green bean dish. Everything we had was good - and the portions are VERY generous. A great addition to the neighborhood!
Fabulous Food. The food at Hai Shang Restaurant is fabulous. Always delicious and always great quality. We usually go for the Buffet, but have gone and ordered from the menu. The selections are endless no matter what your tastes or diet requirements.
Great experience!. Hai Shang is a lovely little place! My boyfriend and I found ourselves in Winnipeg, looking for somewhere to eat, and decided to try Hai Shang.
We ordered seafood and tofu soup, shrimp with vegetables, and shrimp with Chinese greens chow mein. Luckily we were both starving, as the portions were massive. We ordered the large soup, unaware of its behemoth size. Nevertheless, it was polished off.
The shrimp and vegetable dish was very tasty, as was the chow mein. However, I do have two complaints: 1) The chow mein was a tad too greasy. 2) When we asked for hot sauce they only brought out a small dish of it, and warned that it was very spicy, which it wasn't... While I have a real taste for hot foods, my partner is from Laos, and grew up eating very spicy Lao and Thai foods; we ended up having to ask for extra hot sauce multiple times.
Regardless, the food did have good flavour, and was well-prepared. We had lots of leftovers, as well.
Another positive aspect of the restaurant is the staff. They were very attentive, accommodating, and helpful.
I will definitely be returning, though next time I will probably order less greasy dishes.
Best Chinese food in the south! Food was fresh and so tasty, staff was very friendly
Great food! Amazing spring rolls!
Amazing food!. We waited a long time for this restaurant to open as the family running it has had a successful run for many years at a different location.
They have great choices of both traditional and American dishes (although we prefer traditional) that wind up being our "bench-mark" when we try them at other restaurants. Ask for the "Crazy Mixed-up Chicken" (Guai Wei Ji). With tender chicken and chili, we have not seen this one anywhere else. They also have the famous soup dumplings on their dim sum menu. Puffy, steamed balls filled with a delicious meat and broth. Fish with creamed corn sauce, Shanghai chicken (delicate chicken poached in a master stock served with ginger and green onions), green beans with pork, stewed pork hocks, Ginger Beef (by far the best we've had), Budha's vegetarian hot pot...this list is very lengthy. We try new dishes every time we go (although we do have some of them regularly) and have never been disappointed with any choice (even the ones that they think will be too traditional for us non-Chinese people :) ). Go down and eat there this week. (They also have a great lunch buffet.)
Happy Hai Shang!. The owners of this new Chinese restaurant have created a warm and fresh restaurant the decor is lovely, bright and cheerful. The owners are friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent we have been following these restauranteurs for 6 years and are so happy to see Hai Shang. The vegetables are fresh the food is perfectly cooked and the sauces are amazing. The eggplant is terrific the home made dumplings are delicious. The tofu dishes are perfect every time!
Tasty and friendly. We have been visiting this place several times and most items we ordered are excellent. The spicy egg plant dish with minced pork and their lions head meat balls are outstanding, and do go for their Shanghai noodles. Other favorites “special fish”, “family tofu” along with mapo tofu and (breaded) honey garlic veal. Their Sunday lunch (special menu) items are all outstanding, but do not forget to order their dumplings, steamed or fried. Overall the best and consistent Chinese food you will get in Fort Garry. One of the places we go to on a regular basis and never get tired off. Service is friendly and attentive.
Wonderful restaurant!!!! Best Chinese Restaurant on Pembina.. The food at Hai Shang is really really good. I have tried many of the menu options. The Hot and Sour soup is really flavourful and full of fresh ingredients. The menu has many delicious choices I find it difficult to make a decision. The crispy chicken, mapo tofu, beef with gai lan, mixed chow mein and fried rice are among my top choices. The service is very friendly and the owners give the place a very personal. I would really recommend Hai Shang to anybody who enjoys quality Chinese food.
Best Chinese in the South of Winnipeg. After running a restaurant for over 7 years at a different location, Hai Shang opens up to an already large fan base.
The food is fresh, tasty, and much more traditional than most other restaurants. Specializing in shanghai style cuisine (thus the name), it differs from other similar cantonese restaurants in the city.
If you're coming for the "sweet and sour chicken balls" and "consomme soup", then you'll probably still like it here but probably not as much as the other menu items that they are known for.
The staff is cheerful and the atmosphere is pleasant.
Recommend dishes are the Crispy Ginger Beef, Deluxe Chow Mein, "Seafood" Fried Rice, Shrimp Scallop Squid and Gai Lan, Egg Plant Hot Pot, Beef with Satay Sauce, and Mapo Tofu.
Hai Shang is unique in Winnipeg for delivering authentic Shanghainese cuisine, at a reasonable cost, that should satisfy even the most conspicuous of diners. Worth a visit.
