I had supper this evening at Yellow Dog Tavern. It's not a fancy place but I found it comfortable.
I ordered Mac & Cheese with Chorizo with no parmesean. It was really good. There was lots of cheese and it was tasty The chorizo had a bit of a bit. I would get this again.
Ashley was my server ... she was friendly and took good care of me.
Nice atmosphere, friendly attentive wait staff, and really good food. Nachos were decent size, and had a ton of toppings, the philly panini was outstanding. I don't know how i got the idea that the potato chips included would be something different, maybe i expected chips made there or something, but was disappointed when the plain ruffles arrived with the philly. Overall though everyone was satisfied with their food and drinks.
The food wow. Top notch! Everything safe from scratch and every bit was good. Wish they had fries though but chip and dip sufficed. All good!
The food is soo good i love the reuben its so delicious. Needs extra sauce though it can run a bit dry. Ive also tried the monster hot dog i forget what its called but its pretty epic. Good beer selection and cozy pub atmosphere.
The Swizzle Styx had lunch here today, we always visit the Yellow Dog in March in honour of Pub Month and we always have a good experience. Today was no different, service was excellent, although less than enthusiastic (our server gave good service but seemed in a foul mood, the hostess was great). We enjoy the music here and the atmosphere. We dined today on the stew, quesadillas, Caesar salad, Greek salad, mushroom soup, and yam and peanut soup and all were very good. It's a cool little place, we will be back.
March 28, 2019 - The Swizzle Styx dined here again today for the last time. We come here at least once per year. The menu is very limited, which we can deal with because the food is very good. We have had the same waitress now the last several times and that is what the problem is. This lady should not be in the service industry. A server can influence and enhance the entire dining experience but this person is so incredibly negative, she clearly hates her job and is not good with people. We will never return.
As far as pub food goes, The Yellow Dog is the best I've found so far! --- if there is better, please direct me there! Drinks are good, service is friendly, great location in the Exchange/Downtown, and the food comes out very quickly as well if you're in a rush. Try the Perogies or the Mac'n'Cheese if you decide to check it out. I actually prefer their pub food over the food at The Kings Head.
I literally have my plate still in front of me and my meal was SO GOOD I just couldn't wait to review! I had a fully loaded Bison burger with HOMEMADE cream of mushroom soup. A++. I'm so full I should have stopped eating 6 bites ago; but I just can't stop!! Yummmmm!!!!
Not a fan of the atmosphere as a place I would want to hang out in for a beer but the food makes it definitely worth going to.
The stew is awesome and almost every dish I've ever eaten there was good.
Went with friends on a Saturday night before attending a show at The Burt. The food was super tasty and the selection of beer on tap was way more than adequate. Unfortunately they don't have a deep fryer so some menu items came with potato chips instead of fries. Be aware the location is in kind of a sketchy part of town with sketchy inhabitants.
Most importantly, the food was quite good. The portions were ample and the selection was quite diverse.
Service was very fast and timed well.
Overall a very good experience.
Winnipeg has a few good pubs and taverns around. The King’s Head is probably the best known. There’s Maw’s Garage, Brogue and there are also several Tavern United locations around town. I’m sure there are more small places that I don’t know about. One place that’s in the heart of downtown that fits the bill, is the Yellow Dog Tavern on Donald Street.
A perfect nice place for quick lunch in the Exchange District. I ordered for the soup and sandwich combo and it was delicious. The soup for that day was broccoli and cheese and you can choose any sandwiches in the menu to go with it. They even make a half combo meal if you don't have a big appetite at half the price. I chose egg salad sandwich and the soup of the day combo. They have 2-3 kind of soups in the menus everyday including their special of the day. The other side of the place is a decent size bar lounge if you just want to enjoy booze. Fast and friendly service.
Cozy, comfortable place in downtown. I like the decor inside - feels very homey and pub-like if that makes any sense at all. The wood decor, it's nice. It feels like it's not just cheap Ikea furniture inside, lol.
Food is great. I've had their Italian sandwich which has salami, pepperoni, onions, tomato sauce, and red onion and that was good. I don't think it's on the menu anymore, or it might've been a special perhaps. Their hot dog is pretty good too. They have a lot of "comfort food" dishes and definitely fits the pub atmosphere.
This place is one of my favourites! Great food, good local brews, nice relaxed atmosphere. I get the chicken fingers and California club salad almost every time I come here, but the sandwiches and pizzas are also really good (perogy pizza!)
Highly recommended!!
Awesome every time!. I had the bison burger for lunch yesterday. I ordered it with the chips and home made French onion dip. It was very good. I've been here a few times, and it has hit the mark each time. It's a great place for burgers, soup, sandwiches, and other similar items. Great!!
-----11 Dec, 2014-----
Mmm delicious comfort food. I ordered a bbq pull pork sandwich with a caesar salad and it was so good. Ready on time and it was a great price. Fabulous!!
A Favorite Downtown Spot. I'm a big fan of the yd. I'd say we go once a week for lunch, and the odd evening as well. You wouldn't expect it from a small put but the food is excellent. I've never had anything I haven't loved, but that said don't stay often from the Yellow Dog Platter as it is my favorite. They have a small, but good selection of beers on tap, and I especially appreciate the local Half Pints selections.
Awesome. Great, great place. just stumbled on this sweet little gem a few months ago. Now, we go there at least once a wk. The owner is super chill and sure knows good beers and top notch food. Some of the best digs in Winnipeg!!
cheers..
We were a party of six arriving at 10:45 PM. We had nachos, Reuben, wraps and salads. Everyone was satisfied with their meals and drinks. Defiantly a place we'll all return to.
I have been there a few times. Good food, good stout and friendly staff. It was once a used and out-of-print bookshop. Mine, before I retired.
Went tonight for the first time. Good service, good beer, and enjoyed the blackened chicken panini which was made with really good quality chicken. I will go back- great prices too!
Good Times, Great Place and hearty food. Good beer and food specials. Hearty portions, nice location for theatre and movies. Clean with great character.
Tried it today and was really impressed! The Pulled pork sandwich was really good, witha light flaky bun so wasnt too heavy. House salad was excellent. Will be back again
Bad food but I still love it. The yellow dog is just a cool little tavern. I don't know why, I don't know, but I just like it. The beers and drinks are good. It has a cool little vibe. The food we got there last time was incredibly horrible but I kinda feel like it is ok for them to serve horrible food. It is just one of those little corner pubs that me and my friends go to no matter what. If they stepped there food up this place would be awesome!!!
Yellow dog = Good times. A couple of my friends and I decided to try out Yellow Dog last night, and I am sooo glad we did!
Items ordered:
-Jalapeno Poppers $8
jalapenos stuffed with seasoned cream cheese and bacon baked in the oven (They were FABULOUS!)
-Yellow “Dog” Platter for $8: (grilled Winnipeg Old Country hotdog with bacon, jalopenos, fried onions & cheddar on sesame bun served with potato chips and onion dip) It was literally the best hot dog I've ever had! So good, in fact, that I asked our super helpful server to go and tell whoever made my platter how good it was.
-Bison Burger $11: 100% bison meat with cheddar on a whole wheat kaiser (My husband loved this!)
-Steak Sandwich $11: 6 oz sirloin blackened to perfection on a garlic spread covered cibatta with sauteed onion and peppers (friend ordered it cooked medium, which is a little overcooked for me, but it was delicious just the same)
-Perogy Patter $11: locally made cheddar & potato perogies fried served with sauteed onions, garlic farmer sausage and sour cream (these perogies would give my Ukrainian Momma a run for her money!) *please don't tell her I said that!*
I followed my dish down with a half pint of the server-recommended Hefeweizen.. Also fabulous.
Long story short:
-Service: Good
-Food: Good
-Location: Good (on the outskirts of the Exchange)
-Atmosphere: pub-like and cozy (felt like I could stay all night and drinks half pints with the cast of Cheers!)
We will absolutely be going back here!
Surprised!. Riding the edge of the Exchange like a coyote in the bush line, Yellow Dog has a cozy, welcoming menu and feel. While the establishment itself feels a little run down, the plentiful Pub Grub options will satisfy most appetites. Mature Servers that generally know their stuff highlight this good, friendly neighborhood pub.
I went here today for lunch with a coworker as we have both heard of this place and know it had been around for awhile. I had the bacon cheese burger with the beef barley soup. The burger looked like it was made on site and not some frozen factory made patty. The toppings were all fresh and appealing with no real faults. My only negative comment is that the burger seemed a little on the small side however that is likely a personal bias having had too many huge over sized burgers elsewhere, however the amount of empty space on the plate compared to the food did not help that impression. The beef barley soup was not what I was expecting. My experience has been that other beef barley soup typical have large amounts of barley and at least some noticable chunks of beef. Both were missing in three soup at Yellow Dog however it was still a very tasty soup. We left with full bellies and overall pleased with the experience. I am sure we will be back at some point.
Convenient. Good place to go before a concert. potato chips instead of fries. 1 Sports hdtv.
Awesome food and seriously great prices. The jalapeño poppers are the best!
Solid burgers. Been walking past the Yellow Dog for the past three years, always meaning to go in, but didn't until yesterday.
The place was packed at 9pm on a Thursday, and for good reason. Great atmosphere (I especially liked the fact that they had a piano nestled in the back of the room) and great service despite the fact we were the only people in the dining room and the lounge was packed. We were informed that the Yellow Dog has the distinction of being the only place where every Half Pints brew is on tap, which is pretty cool.
We all ordered the beef burger, which was fantastic. One of the better hamburgers I've had in quite a long time! I would definitely recommend the Yellow Dog to anyone who can find it tucked away in the Exchange, around the corner from Towne 8 theatre.
Pear feta walnut bliss. Went there for lunch with a friend. service was okay. cute place very comfortable. ordered a super yummy (but greasy) reuben with a pear feta walnut salad. the waitress reccommended it and i'm sooooo happy she talked me into it. everything was really tasty and well priced. i'll definately be back, even if its just for that scrumptious salad. mmmmmm.
Unexpectably Good!. I had a late night hankering for a hamburger and fries and decided to venture out somewhere downtown. I decided to try the Yellow Dog Tavern as I heard good reviews. When you walk in it is a pub-like atmosphere filled with large TV's and rowdy crowds. You have your choice of sitting at one of two bar counters, regular tables, or comfy couches (they were all taken :( ). I was pleasantly surprised by the menu. They had a lot of nicer, unique choices that I wouldn't expect to see on a menu in this type of place. Even more surprising is that they do not serve french fries, and from glancing over the menu, it doesn't look like they have anything deep fried. They have a good selection of sandwiches/hot dogs/burgers, all which come with soup or salad or chips and dip. Since they do not have soup on Saturdays we were informed, I decided to get the homemade veggie burger with house salad. It was one of the better veggie burgers I have had. You could tell it was homemade and it tasted like it was made from real vegetables and not that soy crap. The salad was lovely as well with slivered almonds, peppers, cukes, tomatoes, all on a bed of lettuce with a light vinegarette. My bf had the hotdog which was gigantic, greasy, and delicious. It had fried onions, jalapeno, and shredded cheese. The chips with homemade onion dip were addictive as well. Service was friendly and fast and the food was overall delicious.
I would definitely come back.
I'll be back!. I went for lunch today and must say, I was quite pleased. This place is very laid back, but super comfy - I felt right at home. The specials are posted on the walls - a different special for each day of the week - as well as weekends (friday: sandwich, chips and dip and a pitcher of keiths for $12? i'm there!)
I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with a side of chicken noodle soup. It came on a baguette, which was a bit challenging to eat, but the sandwich itself was tasty. I found the sauce could've been a bit tangier/spicier, but that might just be my personal preference (i think the bbq sauce they use is called "bulldog"). The coleslaw on the sandwich was excellent. I must also say that the chicken noodle soup was FANTASTIC! The spices in it just made it soo delicious, a great take on a simple soup. My friend had the Yellow "Dog" Platter which is an old country sausage hot dog with fresh jalapenos, fried onions and cheddar and a side of potato chips and french onion dip. He enjoyed his meal and the fact that the peppers were fresh, not like Subway peppers if you know what i mean!
We both agreed that this place is like a combination of Kay's (tasty homemade quality food) and King's Head (Pub like feel that is laid back and comfy - less noisy though!). We definitely enjoyed our visit and will be back - probably this Friday for drinks!
Good Quality and Value. I tried this place for lunch and I am glad that I did.
The decor is pretty basic, but still maintains a somewhat funky feel. As described below, it is separated into three sections. I sat in the dining area.
The menu doesn't have a huge number of choices, but there is a good variety to it. I tried the pulled pork sandwich and was delighted with what I was given. The sauce is a good, sweet bbq and the bun was large and fresh. The amount of pork was ample and I had it with a side of chicken noodle soup. All of that for only $10. Good taste for a good price.
The service was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable.
Still fantastic!. A follow up for my review below; I did in fact bring everyone by for my birthday dinner and since we were arrived hungry we ordered an appetizer. Now generally I'm not a huge fan of spinach artichoke dip but we decided to try it anyway. I'm SO glad we did. It was fantastic and none of this 'can only barely dip my bread to make the dip last', you could've spooned the spread onto the bread half an inch thick and still had some to spare. And wow, the flavour. If there is anything that could be a draw back it would be the salt content. I found a couple of the dishes to be a little heavy handed on the salt but if that's the only complaint I have, just go! Get your butt to the Yellow Dog. You'll be glad you did!
New Favourite Place. I don't know how my husband found this place but I'm so glad he did! We went out one night to check it out and we fell in love. There is 3 sections to the restaurant; the bar, the café style and the dining room. They are each slightly separated to suit your mood and they don't cordon off a section due to the hour. There wasn't a thing on the menu that was over 15$. The cook there makes the soups from scratch and everything is top notch quality. You can taste the freshness in the food. I almost wished I had only ordered the soup but my burger was possibly the best I've ever eaten as well. It's my new favourite place and I'm bringing everyone along for my birthday dinner next month!

Love this spot. Ordered an ok Cesar and a messy nacho plater with out spoons or forks but the staff were awesome and upbeat. It was hopping
Nice local spot after a show or jets game. Friendly staff serving the standard bar fare at a good price and friendly staff
The staff were great and super nice and helpful. The beer selection was smaller but good. I got the club sandwich which was satisfying. The potato option is chips and not fries. I much prefer fries but the chips did come with some onion dip so that helped them to stand out
The Yellow Dog is my favourite pub in Winnipeg. It has great food, it's right between downtown and the exchange district, and the beer selection is basically all local brews. I was just there a few nights ago and they had a beer from almost every brewery in the city, they really spread the love around among all the local craft breweries. Also, I think anyone can feel comfortable there, the vibe is welcoming.
One of my favorite restaurants/pubs in Winnipeg. A cozy hangout downtown with great food at a very reasonable price. The atmosphere is just perfect and everything I've ever ordered (local beers and food) is always delicious. Love it.
A classic downtown pub. Food was all homemade and delicious. Server was fun and efficient. She even looked up ingredients in their home cookbook for us. Service speed was moderate but we felt very welcome in our large group. I will definitely be going back.
