Review State & Main - Winnipeg

Jerrod Fehr
Haven't been here in years, but came here on the patio tonight with my girlfriend as she lives just down the road. WOW! Will definitely be back next week. Our server Alisa was amazing and has been one the best I've experienced in many years! She was at our table all the time, no problems at all with service. Kept upselling me on more shots šŸ˜‚ (my rubber arm). The food was unreal. Had the spinach dip and and chips for starting, grilled cheese burger with fries and dill dipping sauce, split two ways. Awesome portions. 12/10 night!!

We sat in the bar, and our server was very nice, but don't waste your time with the food, and have a drink instead. I ordered the spinach dip that was not bad, and my husband had the fish tacos which he said weren't the worst that he has had, and not the best either. I had the State Smash made with raspberry vodka, mint, raspberries, and mango chunks which I would definitely order again; it was nice and light tasting and not too sweet. My husband drank the Lawn Mower Yard Lager from the Churchill Brewing Co. and he said it tasted watered down, and that he wouldn't order it again.

Pretty disappointing. Due to my GERD my options are limited in general, but this menu has only a few dishes that I could eat. I opted for The Main burger as it sounded good and easy on the gut. The first thing I mentioned to my party after taking a bite was "where's my second patty" in which I got a quick reply "it's right there". Two McDonald's sized patties which I mistook for a single patty. The second complaint was the dryness and lack of condiments on the burger (no sauces). The place was pretty empty and the waitress was inattentive, not once had we been asked about our meals or drinks. When we got the bill we had to ask a couple times for takeout boxes. Woke up around 4am with a gut ache and stomach troubles the next day which didn't subside until the evening. Wasn't worth the money spent. I paid $17.50 for what I would get at McDonald's for around $5.00. I went to McDonald's to get a McDouble just to compare the two, lo and behold they're just about the same except the McDouble tasted better and didn't upset my stomach.

Went for dinner and drinks with a group 7 during a busy Friday evening. Our waitress appeared to be handling several tables in our area but was reasonably quick to refill our drinks and make sure we were doing okay. This was my first experience at State & Main and I'm very happy to report that my order of pistachio crusted salmon was absolutely amazing. Everything on my plate was delicious and came together perfectly. I would have given a full 5 star review but my wife had ordered a steak medium well and it came out rare, even after resting for 10 minutes before she cut into it. They staff did offer to remake but unfortunately we had to leave so they removed it from the bill. I'm excited to return and try other items on the menu.

Iā€™m giving my server, Daniella a five stars, Iā€™m giving the restaurant and management a 2. Our server was basically tending to every table, busing the tables and was visibly overwhelmed. At one point we felt so bad for her that we offered to clear tables. You could tell she wanted the help but couldnā€™t accept. The food was delicious though.
I K (Kira)
Nice atmosphere and good food and drink selection. The service was not as good. Not sure if our server had too many tables, but restaurant wasnā€™t even 1/3 full and the wait time was long (to order, to get drinks, food and the bill).
Pink Bubble
Awesome food, service and most delicious steaks and bang bang shrimp as an appetizer! Their drinks are delicious and definitely will return! At times the wait staff was a bit busy but we enjoyed our food and atmosphere! We would definitely recommend this over the Keg! Their washrooms are very cool as well! Individual spacious stalls! Thank you for a great experience!

Very professional and friendly staff! The food was excellent and the happy hour prices are very reasonable. I recommend the state burger and the fish tacos, they were both delicious!

It was awesome service.Our.waitress was great, she kept our drinks full. The food was delicious very tasty and displayed nice on the plate. Prices were good and portions were good. I had a very enjoyanle time eating at your place

This at one time was our to go place for great food. A little disappointed with the menu change, it was not at all what we expected. We order hummus and nan and the hummus was very thin not the same at all. We also ordered fish that was tasteless and no flavour at all. Would much rather have the old menu back!
Elaine Eiers Edel
Had the Terriaki rice bowl I couldnā€™t finish it, i was not impressed by the noodles they were not cooked at all I had to take it home and I redid the noodles myself. I usually would have no problems with it but this time my food was just not right. I will come back but I would get something else instead of the rice bowl. I was looking forward to having it but never again

The grilled Cheeseburger is delicious and the have the best Ceasars in town, And great staff!!

Went on a date night here for the first time last night and I really really enjoyed the customer service and the food! The server was super awesome and professional and the good was really great too! Very happy! ļæ½

Awesome all around except one tiny issue. Apps took a bit to arrive, only 10 wings and a salad, when they finally did the main came like maybe 4 minutes later. We were maybe half done with the apps. I didn't mind all that much as I was starving but I can see some others frustrated with this. Other then fricking amazing service and food!!!! 4/5

Atmosphere was great, the food was delicious, the service was friendly and pleasant but the drinks were just a little bit slow, I assume because it was New Year's Eve and the lounge was quite busy and we ordered fancy drinks. Would highly recommend.

I love the place. Always friendly people and very nice atmosphere and it's nice that they get to know you and remember. This is my all time favorite place to go
Reagan Bryson
It was a good experience, drinks were ok, food tasted fine, service was a little slow for a Sunday afternoon. Stated that we were tight on time but still the 2 apps took longer than expected to arrive. Had to inhale, pay and leave.
Sharon Dubeck
Was there last Friday. We are never disappointed and always get "our table" in the lounge. Even the waitress recognizes us. Good food and atmosphere.
Troy Lemon
Small portions for the price. Food was tasty but just not much of it. Leaving here to hit a drive thru.
Kim Olson
We absolutely love the Veggie Burger!! I've heard that everything on the menu is spectacular... Might have to try something new one day!! Excellent quality and awesome serviceļæ½ļæ½ļæ½

Good food, good drinks, and good service. What more can one ask for? Prices are very fair for what you get, and the food is always awesome. Dragon boats, fish and chips, etc all good choices. The Pacific Rim soup is really really good šŸ˜Š

Second time eating there and itā€™s excellent. People are professional and the food is tasty!

Lighting was very dark, my daughter is legally blind and couldnā€™t see the menu or her way to the bathroom. Bathroom was dirty and at one stall at a time, lines were horrid. I ordered an French onion soup, ran about 11 bucks. No garlic bread. Soup as some sort of bread or croutons, mostly onion and maybe 1/4 cup of broth. For the amount was paid was not impressed. Dessert was good. But our party had to send their steak back. And then it had to be cooked two more times for their neglectance. Dessert was fine. Too much of a portion and waaaay too much of the sauces for the brownie.

The atmosphere and service here are great. Lighting a little softer and a warm place with good character.
Service was prompt and friendly.
We had fish tacos and the noodle bowl.
Fish tacos were 95% lettuce and not much flavor.I don't recommend this item. The noodle bowl although was good, its basically a $16.00 bowl of soup. I like the restaurant however and would likely just try something else next time.

Basically Original Joe's East! Alot of the same menu options. The staff here is excellent. Cozy place for a date night. Happy hour 3-6 offers great prices on regular menu items. Will definitely be back.

I have been to this place many times. It's always decent food. They have added a few new things to the menu which I was excited for. I decided to try the bruchetta fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. It was more like soup. I couldn't believe it. They Alfredo sauce was so watery and gross. Very disappointed.

We tried State & Main today.Ā It's a nice, big space, handy to the mall.

At noon on a Saturday we were received with a friendly welcoming chat, and we were seated immediately.

Our server Sherie was delightful.Ā She was genuinely personable and helpful.Ā We enjoyed having her as part of our dining experience.

My friend had the Pacific Rim Noodle Bowl which she LOVED!Ā The portion was generous and so delicious, with just the right level of spice.Ā Nan bread provided a great accompanying side.Ā

In attempting to discover the best Eggs Benedict that our fair city has to offer, I tried State & Main's.Ā I liked that gluten-free buns were available.Ā The eggs were nicely cooked.Ā The Hollandaise sauce had a hint of a spice that made it taste a bit different from what I've had elsewhere.Ā I wish there had been more of it to soak up the buns with.Ā

The meal was accompanied by fruit on a skewer, and a good serving of "tots"; the potato variety--from the frozen food section.Ā It was okay.Ā

I would not necessarily order the Eggs Benedict again, but I would return to try the Veggie Burger or some of the delicious sounding sides and extras.

I always come here itā€™s the place to go if you donā€™t know where to go. The new happy hour they have is amazing and all the servers are good but one. They always take good care of me and my lady so I keep coming back. The food is always good and the breakfast is also nice.

I made an order from them from Skip the Dishes. I placed the order at around 21:30. Skip was great, we had everything by around 22:15. However, we only received one half of our order. I contacted Skip the Dishes to receive the second half. They tried calling the restaurant and just got voicemail. I tried calling the restaurant personally and just got voicemail. In the meantime, the staff at Skip could see the restaurant accepting other orders, so it was not an error of restaurant times. By 23:30, we still could not get a hold of them. Unfortunately, the restaurant needs to be spoken to in order to receive a refund as well. So at this time, I paid $38.11 for one order of chicken tenders. I cannot believe a restaurant would not answer their own phone line.
The fries we got were way too salty. The gravy we received for the one order we got was in a sauce dipping cup. The chicken tenders and plum sauce were great, but that was the only positive, and that was dampened by having to split our one order of chicken tenders between 2 people. I am not impressed. I will not go there, and I certainly will never order from them again, unless they make a good effort to repair their mistake.

I have always enjoyed the service and food at State & Main, but after last night I won't be going back. For my birthday I recieved a MasterCard Gift Card, but when I used it to pay their portable payment machine wouldn't accept it. After leaving the restaurant, I checked my balance and used the card elsewhere and successfully purchased items from a store that accepts MasterCard.

Today on February, 21st 2017 I called State & Main Winnipeg and asked what methods of payment were accepted. The lady on the phone told me that they do accept prepaid Mastercards. Conflicting information in-store, online and over the phone.

Unfortunately you lost a loyal customer.

Basically a rip off of Earls and Moxies. Plenty of menu options but some of the prices are high. Salad was very bitter and burger was alright. The beef dip my friend had was awkward to eat as it should have been cut in half or presented differently.
Miss.Pink
Went here one night during December...staff were very polite.. and drinks were awesome...lots of items has jalapeƱos which was different. My partner had the steak sandwich with a salad and jalapeƱo mash potatoes. I had the mac and cheese with jalapeƱo. We both really enjoyed our meals and would go again. More pub style food, though they do have full meals as well

I'm sitting here trying to watch NFL kickoff and I can even enjoy the damn game. I ordered 2 pounds of wings and the "tartare" and i was the last one to get my food. My wings came out dry as hell, obviously been sitting on a rack for at least an hour. Where is the "chef" in this place? Have some respect for the dishes you put out. Cook a damn fresh wing! This is just my order, we have a group here and I don't see one satisfied person beside me. This place sucks as and I will never be back.
A friend of mine and I went and it was our 1st time at the restaurant. It was very dark inside the restaurant. We ordered bang bang shrimp which were very good (1 point). We ordered the bruschetta which was served with warm bread slices with melted cheese on it and cold topping on the side. The cold tomato topping was flavourful but just made the bread cold(-1)?! I asked them to warm up the topping and the manager brought it back cold telling us that is the way they serve it (-1)?! I ordered a ribeye for my entree. The manager brought it out and said here is your "Empire steak". They gave me the New York (-1). When I complained, the manager tried to say that the tough, gristly piece of meat I received was a ribeye even though when he gave it to me he called it the Empire (-1)?! When the manager brought the steak out he noticed that I didn't have a steak knife and said he would bring me one; none came (-1). Then the waitress said she would bring me one; none came (-1). Then I got up and went to get one and the waitress brought it to the table (-0.5). The gravy tasted like thickened oxo cubes (-1). Call me and I'll show you how to make a decent gravy! My friend was also very disappointed with her meal. I can't speak for her; I will say for myself that if you are going to call it lettuce wraps you should probably not use Romaine lettuce it is a little hard to wrap (-0.5). Just my opinion. In the end the manager ended up comping the whole meal (+2); it was the right thing to do! I do not think I would go back. Too bad because I was looking forward to another good place to eat in my area! As you can see there are more -s than +s but I'm rating it a 1 because I think the manager comping my friend's meal too (I was the only one vocalizing my displeasure) was the right thing to do.

It's an alright place. The menu is remarkably similar to Original Joe's. Some of the items have the same name which surprised me. You would think they'd try to switch it up a bit.

The food was good. I found the place way too dark for 1:30 pm on a sunny day. It wasn't very busy but the service was way too slow once the food came out. I'm actually taking half a point off because it took forever to get out of there.

I would go again but it wouldn't be my first choice.
Melody
Portion sizes are good and the food here is pretty decent. It is very similar to Original Joe's. Ā Nice atmosphere and the staff were friendly. Ā I've been a couple times, the poutine is enjoyable. Ā I've had the veggie burger and it was okay for a franchise burger.
Melissa Colquhoun
French onion soup
Spaniko flatbread
Yum! Yum! Yum! Good service. Great food. Would prefer to pack my own take home but other than that, it was a nice lunch.
Dawn Kraychuk
Food was not bad but the service was not good at all. Cups were filthy and our server had the worst attitude of any I have seen. My friend asked for a clean cup for her coffee and she replied with a huff and a large sigh. She was also further annoyed when she asked for cream. Not going back.

Great wing special and awesome chicken gyoza. Drinks are generally terrible, dessert was a delight! Overall, nice atmosphere and prices are fair.
Rick
When I had the burger here I thought it was one of the best burgers I ever had. The ambulance is very nice and relaxing. Will be back to try other menu items.

Nice place to grab lunch, dinner or even brunch when you're hungover Saturday morning! Very compatible to Original Joe's in almost every aspect. Service is great, food is great, patio doesn't get much sun but other than that no complaints
Karly Clouse
Nothing beats brunch at State and Main, French Toast with Bailey's. Absolutely to die for! Sad there's only one location in the city, but it's worth the drive over! Gorgeous patio as well!
Fredric Near
The only thing better than poutine, is poutine with more toppings! The butter chicken poutine is my go to appetizer, it's almost a meal in itself. Wicked flavour, piled high! Always amazing service, highly recommend,

The food is always super good and so is the service. I love all the sides that you get. It's a little dark inside but still a great place.Servers are always friendly and the know the menu well.

If you go, try the jalapeno corn bread. Although, I think I heard they no longer serve it so I'm not sure I have a reason to go anymore.
They have a neat selection of liquors and the food is ok. I don't suggest the steak. Sweet potato fries are surprisingly tasty though.

OMG. Place was awesome! I had the pulled pork sammy, side of jalapeƱo mash potatoes and Caesar salad, that had real bacon and real parm. Everything tasted great. My new favorite.
Heidi Schiefelbein
Love it here!!! Great drinks! Great servers! Love going here for brunch, watching games, and sitting on the patio in summer! Great bunch of staff!!!

SwizzleStyx. I've been here several times now and have enjoyed my food each time. The lettuce wraps are tasty, the bang bang shrimp is excellent, the fish tacos were very good and they make a very mean Caesar! I've had hit and miss service which was great a couple of times and a bit slow a couple of times. The atmosphere is nice and fun and the restaurant is very clean. I would recommend trying it out!
Mike Stamatakos
Red Thai Curry Shrimp Bowl. As expected, delicious.. Nothing more to say.
Peking1983
Great food and nice ambiance. I order a burger with some sides and when all is said and done I had to take some of it to go. It was delicious but I could not eat any more of the delicious food. I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu.
Milky_way_grl2
After my first visit I was impressed. After my second visit I was blown away with the service, food, atmosphere and it is now my go to place with my best friend for our girls night out! Fantastic!
Lelaine
Last time to go there. We went to the restaurant September 30th. We all loved our food, the srevice was great but it was way too hot in the bar. There were four of us and we were all uncomfortably warm. We left right after we ate. As soon as we walked into the mall it was considerably cooler. cool it down and we'll be back.
Peter
Wine night tuesdays!. Great food and atmosphere. I love coming to see my favorite bartender Drew! He always makes sure that we're taken care of and having a great time! Definitely come on Tuesdays for half priced wine! The best!
Doyourjob
Meh. Good food, can't say the same about the service.. I've been here a couple times, I have never had a bad thing to eat on the menu yet. But everytime I go here the service is just awful. I advise you to not sit at the bar because you will never be served or you will wait 15 minutes to even be asked if you would like a drink. The next time I sat at a table in the lounge, yet again had to wave down the server after sitting there for 15-20 minutes with no one even coming to see us. I've never sat on the restaurant side but maybe that's better service? who knows.
Katelovesdogs
Liked everything except the dark atmosphere.. I get that it's kinda trendy to have really dim interiors, but this was annoyingly dark. My friends and I came out blinking and squinting like we'd been dining in a cave, and it was overcast outside, not even sunny!
Anyway, what matters is the food and service and both were great. Within our group we ordered the Mac n cheese, the fish tacos, a Reuben, and a burger and everyone liked their food. I really liked the array of side dish choices. I had a cilantro slaw that was quite good, but needed something so I added in some salsa...it worked. I don't think they are particularly kid friendly, but I'm ok with that. Will go again.
***update...This place seems to be taking a turn for the worse. My husband and I went again in September 2014 and the experience was barely ok. The service was terrible and the restaurant was not anywhere near full. The wait for everything was far too long and the food was not as good as the first time and was unevenly plated (one taco had plenty of filling, one was a bit anemic and the third had barely anything in it). Also the portion of sweet potato fries was very tiny. Disappointing.
Dollycat
I like to go here with my friends for wings. My girlfriend doesn't really to come with us. I usually order the wings even though they're a little expensive, you don't get very many and they usually empty my intestines. They taste pretty good though. This is one of the best breastaurants around. I wonder if management realizes it's good likely wouldn't stand on its own therefore makes it's 19 year old waitresses expose as much flesh as the law allows.
Vida.m.nelson
Huge portions and delicious food. State and Main is similar to Earls and Moxies, but better. I had the beer can chicken and it was very tasty. I was impressed by the portions considering the chicken took up most of my plate. For the price, this is a better deal than similar restaurants. The servers were friendly, there were many options on the menu, and the drink specials were good too. One of the best things about State and Main though was the atmosphere. There are big-screen televisions everywhere, so if you want to watch a Jets game with a group of friends this is the place to go.

Your glass washer needs a little cleaning I think. Every glass my friends and I got were all scummy with a white film. Very disgusting. I work in a restaurant and you should have the proper chemicals like mikroclene and the other is ultra clean from Ecolab. Not going back until this gets better.
Jenna
Ok food but horrible service. Better off going to moxies same atmosphere, better food and way better service

Lousy Service. Hubby and I have been to State and Main a few times, but I think Iā€™m giving up now.

The first time we went, our server was somewhat inattentive. If she had come back to check on how our meals were, I would have ordered another glass of wine. As it was, we had to flag her down to get our bill.

The second time we went, I asked a question about an item on the gluten-sensitive menu (kudos that they do have a gluten-sensitive menu). She said that she didnā€™t know. I had to ask her to go find out, which she did reluctantly. When she came back and I was placing my order, she asked me if I knew what was in the mixed green salad. Um, isnā€™t it your job to tell me? It was her tone more than words. When she recited the list of ingredients in the salad, I misheard one of the ingredients and asked her to repeat it. Again, her tone was.... snooty when she did.

The food itself is okay, nothing special. I had a bison burger which could have used more seasoning, jalopeno mashed potatoes which taste yummy, but Iā€™m not so sure are ā€œrealā€ potatoes, and the infamous mixed green salad, which was actually quite good. I donā€™t remember what else I had on my previous visit, but I did have enjoy the potato salad ā€“ although someone else at our table didnā€™t like it.

The lighting is quite dark, but there are spotlights over the tables. I donā€™t understand why they have TVs on the walls of the restaurant, though. It makes the whole restaurant seem like a lounge, rather than having a separate lounge.

Personally, I like Moxieā€™s (in this area) or Original Joeā€™s (St. Vital) better.

Excellent first visit. Had lunch there today and I was impressed. I had the blackened cajun chicken sandwich with jalapeno cheddar mashed potatoes and upgraded to the lobster bisque for sides. All three were awesome and I will definitely return.
Arielbariso
Very Good First Impression!. I had dinner with my co-worker and his fiancee and this was the first time for all of this to dine here, simply fantastic! The lighting in the restaurant was very cozy, not too dim (Shark Club is worse for that). Our server was really attentive, actually apologized to us when she thought our drinks came to us slow, I thought it was brought to us at a reasonable time. A highlight to mention is it was easy to talk and have conversations, I would describe this place as a very warm and cozy atmosphere. One small blemish to point out was I wanted to order a Heineken on tap but was told they have it only in a can which was alright. I had the Kansas City BBQ Ribs, out of this world amazing, the fries and gravy were good, the one thing I didn't like was the jalapeno corn bread, did not like the texture. Simply this is a great place to dine if your in the area!

I first went here when it opened and it was decent. Came back with my boyfriend last night. Not as impressed. They changed the menu drastically, now only having 2 types of steak (as opposed to them previously having 6) and no longer serving the beer-can chicken (which was delicious). They also eliminated the chicken Caesar wrap which was amazing. Not sure why they changed it, but it wasnt for the better. Also, they raised their drink prices. I'm not a big drinker, but one or two with a meal occasionally is nice (the drinks now all cost 8.25 and all beers are 6 dollars), and food prices went up too, although the meals don't reflect the price increase. As well, the wait times weren't on track, but if it's a few minutes I usually don't mind. Small wait area once the mall closes, small restaurant area as well. The servers don't come to the tables very often, so get what you need while she's there. It's very similar to Moxies in their atmosphere (and noise levels). I'm not sayig I hate this place, but I don't know if I'll go back. My opinion? Hit Pony Corral just down Nairn. It's a more sophisticated and quieter Moxies. And the food and prices are awesome.
ELF
The food at this restaurant was pretty good for what it is, and the variety on the menu was extensive and somewhat unique for pub fare. the atmosphere was loud and noisy; even though we sat at the restaurant and it was kid friendly, it was a lot like a pub in there anyway with TVs all around the wall and the Jets game blaring.
Mr Wash Man
Its an okay joint to eat at but nothing really stands out at this restaurant. It feels like i am at Moxies at St V Centre
Outandabout
Great food and experience. Great mainstream food and so many appealing menu options. The wait service and level of hospitality here are consistently excellent. Fair prices, late hours, and nice atmosphere. A more central location would be awesome.
Richardstrong
Positive addition. Overall, my experience was excellent. The service was great, I liked the look of the place, and the food was tasty - exactly what you would expect from a place like this. Initially, I expected more from this place, the name sounds higher end, but regardless, the I would recommend the place..a great addition to KP.
Mia
Disappointing food. Wings special was a good deal, only $0.39 per wing, however we were very disappointed after the first bite. Seems like they were old wings, very chewy. The fish tacos lacked flavour, they had too much lettuce. Good beer selection, attentive service but due to the disappointing food, we will not be back for a while.
SJH
Awesome, awesome and awesome.. This place is awesome. I'm very pleased it was added to Kildonan Place. The french fries are great and the sweet potato fries are GREATER (I usually don't like sweet potato fries because they're always soggy or just bleh). Most of the dishes come with a hefty amount of vegetables that taste fresh and make me feel like I'm not just eating carbs and meat (particularly in the noodle bowls/stir-fry like dishes, but the fish tacos and others too!). There are some fun drinks and staff are very friendly, love the service.
Great atmosphere and again, very happy with this addition to this mall.

Soso. Been there twice, first time really really good, second time not recommended. I ordered the fish tacos the second time and got measly tiny pieces of fish, 3 on most of them, and no flavour unless you pour the sauces on that they give you. Very disappointed, not sure if I'd go back. Went to Boston Pizza last night and could rave about everything we ordered at our table. Will be going there again for sure. Saw some pastas being served and they looked awesome too! If last nights pizza is how they always make it we would say it's the best in the city. Too bad, would love to have more good restaurants in the area! Moxies is always a risk, had good and really bad there as well.
Dharma
Very nice!. The fish tacos were expertly prepared. The fish was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. Everything was very, very fresh--nice crunchy veggies. Love the dark & cozy atmosphere. Server was very friendly and knowledgeable and gave great recommendations. I'll be back as I find the other restaurant offerings on the Regent strip pretty unappealing. I'm looking forward to my next visit!
Loves To Dine
Went to state and main about a month ago after being recomended by a friend and absolutely loved it. Me and my girlfriend really enjoy trying new restaurants but when we can't decide where to go, state and main is always an option. The service was very good. The wait times are always reasonable even when it's busy. The options are great and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. We will be coming back many more times.

It took a bit of a wait to be seated. Once seated the server took our drink orders quickly. When she brought them out, we were ready to order but she put the drinks on the table and took off before we could utter a word. There was at least 15 more minutes before we could get her attention. Once we ordered, the food came quickly. My sister had the lettuce wraps. I sampled it and it was quite flavourful. I had the steak sandwich with fries & gravy and the ginger cilantro slaw. I also ordered the grilled onions and mushrooms. While I ordered the steak medium well, it came well done. Luckily it was still fairly tender. The onions and mushrooms were done to perfection. The fries looked pale but turned out to be nice and crispy. The gravy blew my mind as it was actually hot-which I don't think I've EVER had. But the slaw was TO DIE FOR! It was shredded nice and thin with a nice vinegary dressing and the cilantro made it taste so fresh! I didn't really detect the ginger though. I would go back despite the inattentive service.
Sufitza
Good place to go with friends, especially wine nights on Tuesday. The food is like any other typical Moxies, Earls, etc. The service is a very big hit and miss, too inconsistent for me to be happy about it. It's either really great or non-existent. So basically go there for drinks and apps, but I'd go somewhere nicer for a dinner date.
Dan Klajncar
Like Original Joe's? If so, you'll like State and Main as they the same restaurant with a few differences in menu items. One big difference though is the service. The OJ's on Kenaston has always given superior service regardless of day or time. This results in our servers receiving a substantial tip. I went to State and Main on June 22nd. I didn't tip. We arrived at about 2:00 pm and from what we could see, the restaurant side didn't have more than 5 people at tables. So we waited about 5 mins for someone to seat us. Took at least 10 minutes to get our drinks. We ordered an Ice tea, a lemonade and a Little Scrapper. We requested "no avocado" on one of more meals. It showed up with avocado. We pointed it out to our server who apologized, took the meal, and came back 30 seconds later with the avocado scrapped off. That's just wrong. I asked for the chipotle dip for my sweet potato fries, I received dill. We asked for a refill on the ice tea but that didn't happen either. Overall, food was good but service was atrocious.

Been here a few times. The servers are nice but lack menu knowledge. I like the food and the drink menu is great. But I would never sit at this bartop again. My drinks were usually empty for 10-15 minutes at a time and when my friend and I asked for shots the bartender rudely told us to wait. I am a waitress myself and I would understand if they were busy, but that was not the case. I have never had such rude and slow service as when I sat at the state and main bar.

Went for my birthday and was pleasantly surprised with the staff, food and drinks. Everything was delish and service was ok!
Intrepid Diner
Nice Addition to the Upscale Casual Restaurant Scene. I went here for dinner and I enjoyed my visit.

My best description of the place is that it is Original Joe's better dressed brother. The menu items are very similar to those at Original Joe's. I believe they may share the same owners. State and Main is a much nicer setting. It has a separate lounge and the decor is more..well...stately than Original Joe's.

The service was prompt the night I was there. My server was very friendly and was quick to get drink refills. The place was very crowded, but I didn't have to wait very long for my meal to arrive. I have read other reviews where people were served cold food. They have either improved or I was one of the lucky ones, my food arrived at an appropriate temperature...hot.

I had the beer can chicken and ribs combo. It was around $23-$24. I liked the bbq sauce on the ribs. The chicken was quite moist and flavourful. The chicken looked like it was overdone, but it was not. I guess it was just the way the rub caramalizes. Dinners come with a choice of two sides. I appreciate the variety and I didn't walk away hungry.

The menu has a large number of choices.

If you are looking for something a bit fancier than fast food in Transcona...this place is an excellent choice.

Went twice, 1st time good, 2nd time not bad. My first experience here was went pretty good
There were many staff working and service was excellent
Decor was pretty similar to an earls/moxies/joeys
Food was pretty good as well
I don't drink wine but they had half price wine when i went

My second experience was absolutely horrendous
I went on a date after my good experience the time before expecting a good time
Service wasnt as good as we had to wait on drinks and food was cold

I'd probably give it another try

Good Food , Good Atmosphere. I didn't have high expectations going to state and main, but both the times I have been I've been extremely happy with my service and food. the menu is similar to Moxies I would say, it has a lot of things to choose from and it has many interesting choices available. the waiting time for the food was not very long and it tasted good as well as it was hot. the atmosphere is calm and relaxing , you could go for any occasion, I really liked that they have secluded booths that allow you to sit right beside your parter compared to sitting across from each other in chairs. the waitresses I've had were also polite and did their job well

Dark Atmosphere, Cold food !. Went here about a month ago and I will not be returning. I ordered a poutine, pretty safe choice, while my friend ordered the cheese and mac dish. Maybe they dished out my food before hers was complete, but my poutine was cold ?! What makes people think it's okay to serve cold food? Not impressed.

OK Food, Hip Atmosphere, Awful Service. State and Main has a nice atmosphere and decor, and I had such high hopes for the restaurant. We've been here to eat 3 times, once we sat in the restaurant and had dinner, once we sat at the bar and had drinks, and once we came with a group of about 6 friends and sat in the lounge. Each time I had similar experiences. Overall you can expect OK food, a hip laid back atmosphere, and awful service.

The food offered at State and Main seems to me to be your standard pub fare, to which they have added some new interesting ingredients to try and add a little signature hipness/taste (sometimes successfully sometimes not), and fried chicken. The food is OK, not bad, but it's a decent price for what you get. The food itself wouldn't keep me going back there, but the atmosphere might if the service was OK.

The decor and atmosphere are really nice. You can tell where some extra thought was put into making it a really hip, yet accessible place to eat. I really like the padded edge of the bar, really makes it comfortable to sit at the bar and have a drink. If you hadn't been here before, and walked by you'd definitely think to yourself "I would like to try that restaurant". The lighting is subdued, with leather seating, and dark wall paint, which all lead to a really enjoyable experience.

Lastly, the service is just awful. I'm pretty sure the servers/bartenders who work here were hired based on how attractive they are. Because the place is OVERRUN with attractive servers. The first time we visited State and Main we had dinner in the dining area and our server left us alone without drink refills for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Dinner took over 30 minutes to arrive after we'd ordered (it also took the waitress 20 minutes to show up and take our order). It wasn't that they were overly busy, or short staffed, because we counted about 1 server for every 4 tables. The restaurant was fairly new, so we decided the restaurant was just working out the kinks of just opening and decided we would return in a month or two when they had settled in.

The second time we visited, about a month later, it was a very busy Saturday night, and we were told it would be about a 20 - 30 minute wait for a dining table, so we sat at the bar instead. We had intended to order a number of drinks and appetizers, or a meal depending on how we felt. We sat at the bar, we're served our drinks, and then promptly ignored for 40 minutes. Fifteen of those minutes my drink was empty. No one asked us if we wanted a menu or appetizers, and I wasn't even able to flag down a bartender to ask for one. The bar wasn't even that busy, the bartenders spent the whole time refilling straw containers, and preparing for the night. I get preparing is important but not to the point of ignoring your customers. Long story short we paid and left having spent about 1/5th of what we had planned.

The last time we visited, we came with a group of 6. It was a friends idea, because after our first 2 experiences we wouldn't have chosen this restaurant again. Our experiences in the lounge were similar to our dining room experience, the food was OK, the price was decent, and the service was awful. Except it seems less servers work in the lounge area so service was EVEN SLOWER than in the dining area. We split the check 3 ways, and the server got it wrong at least twice. I understand splitting the cheque can be difficult to keep track off, even for experienced servers, but the server seemed to get angry when we tried to fix it. When we left, a manager and 2 hostesses were standing at the front of the restaurant and didn't even acknowledge us as we left. No thank you for coming, or come back soon. They weren't even busy at the time. It's not a huge deal but it's basic customer service to thank your customers for coming. It was so strange that everyone in our group thought it was weird.

I will honestly never choose to go to this restaurant again. There are so many places where the servers aren't completely untrained, and useless. I blame management for their inability to properly train the servers. It's a chain restaurant, so they have the menu, and decor predetermined for them, and that why those parts of the restaurant are OK. But whom ever owns/runs State and Main has no idea how to properly train servers, and I suspect the cook staff either, based on wait times.

Over all don't go here, there are far better places to eat.

Really nice design really nice waitress. Took 15 min to get our drinks. Appetisers came, than mains came a minute after. My burger had no flavor. The poutine was ice cold and the side salads really need bigger bowls. I had more salad on the table than I did in the dish. Might just be a bad experience. Im not sure thatbi will return

Love This Place. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant! I've been there several times since it opened and the food has been amazing each time. I highly recommend the baked pretzel sticks (what's in that mustard? it's amazing!) and the steak sandwich.

First Visit was Great!. A friend of mine invited me for lunch here, had never heard of this place before so thought I would give it try. Had the steak sandwich which was the lunch special for 13.95 with sauteed mushrooms, fries, and a ceasar salad. Fantastic, one of the best steak sandwiches I has in years. Ceasar salad was so fresh and not heavily dressed, the fries were nicely seasoned. Service was good. Would definetly go back and try something else on the menu.

Love and hate. Food was excellent! Signature Cesar, amazing! How are they making money on the huge portion sizes? Not that I'm complaining.
The one thing they really need to work on is their service! Server sold us something they didn't have, she gave us someone else's leftovers and when we got our left overs my bread was on the bottom with all my food on it. No one likes soggy bread, just sayin.

I love it. The food is great, the service was excellent. They did mix something up on my order but cleared it up right away. I reccomend trying.
Mmelly
Horrible, we ordered an appetizer and never got it, people beside us got their food before we even ordered and they sat down after us. We then got our meals and our chicken burgers were raw. We did get free dessert to make up for it however. Also not very good service.
Happy_425
Not bad, not good. The first impression wasnt that great. The tables are small for a family of 4. One member had to be careful not to hit the fire alarm with his elbow throughout dinner as they sat us right by the door. Food was decent. One complaint... $11 for 10 Smitty sized chicken wings... not good.

Overall it was not terrible, but there are much better options out there. Moxies, Earls, and Joeys all offer better food, and tables that fit the entire family, their drinks, and the fixings. I wouldn't go back. Earls sushi is still my favorite!

So so. Nice atmosphere. Friendly staff. Potato salad was tasty. Menu has a wide variety of items.

Food was average. Was really expecting more from this place especially with all the hype about it. Mashed potatoes tasted like the came from a box. Server gave us our bill and didn't come back for quite awhile. She was busy scratching her feet and mingling with her coworkers.

Probably wouldn't choose to come back here. Nothing really stood out.

Went in to watch the game Tuesday night, sat at the bar top and had an amazing night! It was 1/2 the price for a bottle of wine, the sound of the game was on, the bartender was friendly and provided great service. We started with the fish tacos (delicious), then had the braised beef short ribs (great fall of the bone) with sweet potato fries and cedar salad and the Cobb salad (semi-healthy and also delicious). I would go back for the service, price and atmosphere alone, but the food (and wine ;-) were both great. Definitely going back.

AVERAGE AT BEST. Walked in to be greeted by several young girls in short black dresses. Our waitress was very nice. After about 20 minutes another 2 girls brought out the dinners.I had the french beef dip. The au jus was terribly salty. The roast beef was not fresh roast beef off a roast but looked and tasted like processed roast beef. Potatoe salad was not great. I was told the fries were homemade fries to which they were not. My husband`s chicken wings were overly cooked. I have a problem were some of these chain restaurants may hire women based on appearance or it was just a coincidence that about 12 of them all had long hair and could get in a small dress. We would not rush back. Over priced for the quality of food you receive. The interior was nice for a sports bar restaurant.

Slowest service I've ever had. We waited for 20 minutes to have someone come see us. Didn't get our drinks until our meal came another half hour later and our waitress didn't apologize for the slow service.

Very average. Nothing in this place sets it apart from moxies earls or milestones. Nine of us order different items. All of us ended the meal with a "meh, nothing great".

Won't be back; so many other options.

Fairly generic (think Moxie's, BP, Applebee's, etc)but decent food. Service was amazing both times I've been. Questions about food were answered well and everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there and to serve you. If you're expecting culinary greatness from a place in the mall maybe you should rethink how you view food. I will definitely return.

A nice addition to the Regent area.. The food was great. I definitely recommend the flatbread pizzas! The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is nice as well although the dining room is on the smaller side. Tuesdays are half price wine night!

Great Food, Great Prices, Great Service. My wife and I have been to State and Main twice in the last three weeks. I really don't think there are any better restaurants in the area; certainly not at the same price point.

With respect to the comparisons to Earls... There is no Earls in NK/EK/Transcona... and besides, Earls is hands down the noisiest, most pretentious (for a chain, anyway) restaurant in existence.

Back at State and Main, my wife and I have tried the baked pretzel sticks and meatball sliders (starters); the grilled cheeseburger, the main (burger), halibut & chips and butter chicken (mains); and the dirt pie (dessert.) Everything has been phenomenal.

The service has been pretty good too. Staff are always very friendly and so far, their recommendations have paid off. Our mains took a quite a while on our second visit, but they were pretty busy at the time. There is a manager constantly patrolling the restaurant and checking in on guests.

The atmosphere (in the restaurant; haven't been in the bar yet) is nice. It's a little dark at first, but the tables are well lit and the candlelight makes it feel quite intimate.

We will definitely be back.

Great service, great atmosphere, great food, great prices, generous portions. I don't see anything wrong with all of the above!

Good, Basic Fare. State & Main has added itself to the multitude of restaurants in the Regent area, located inside Kildonan Place mall. As someone already mentioned it is owned by the same company as Original Joe's, which is pretty evident by looking at their menu. The food is typical of a Moxies/Earls/Joeys, with salads, sandwiches, burgers, pastas, and entrees of ribs/chicken/steak. I enjoy that for side dishes you get to pick 2 from several choices as opposed to the normal "either fries or salad". I had the veggie burger which was packed with roasted red peppers, guacamole, and brushetta topping all on a whole wheat bun. For my sides I chose the ginger-cilantro coleslaw and the jalapeno cheddar mashed potatoes. The coleslaw was light and refreshing with a strong pronounced cilantro flavor, while the ginger wasn't as noticable. The potatoes were comforting as mashed potatoes should be, but a bit on the gloopy side and I could not taste any jalapenos or anything spicy for that matter. My dad had the thai chicken salad which he found filling and tasty, which also came served with a moist banana bread. Service was attentive throughout the evening and our food came out pretty fast. I was also satisfied with the cost of food based on the portions and quality. I most likely will return here because it reminds me of Original Joe's (which I really like) minus the long car ride from home. I also like knowing that they are open until 2am 7 days a week, making it a convenient spot for a late night snack.

I like it.. The title says it all.

Just another Earls/Moxies/Joeys..... Fairly nice place, I guess because everything is new. Food was meh. Same kind of dishes you would get at other places (pot stickers, chili chicken, quesadilla, etc). Music playing was way to loud, couldn't even hear the waitress (who also couldn't answer questions about the menu), almost as loud a going to a club which kind of killed to whole experience for me.

I would say check it out, but I would pick an Earls over this place.

I went to State & Main with my girlfriend tonight. It is a nice looking place. It is a sister restaurant to Original Joes so if you like that place you will like this place. The food is good, just like Original Joes. My girlfriend and I really enjoy the Sweet Chili Chicken. They have a lot of great drinks here and their drink specials are especially good. On Tuesdays it is half priced bottles of wine. Service is good, friendly, and efficient. We happened to know the server as she used to work with us at another restaurant. It is great to have a nice restaurant come to the Transcona area to try and liven the area up. We will be back for sure. It is a great place. I can't wait until this place gets fully established and builds their patio.

Overall, the food is exactly what you would expect from a chain restaurant like this: satisfying and consistent. The size of their menu, and those few unique choices that they do offer, help to set them apart from the nearby competitors.

Just when you thought we had enough big-box restaurants like Moxieā€™s and Earlā€™s, another one pops up! This time itā€™s out in Transcona nuzzle in Kildonan Place shopping mall. If youā€™ve been to Moxieā€™s, Earlā€™s, or Joeyā€™s, you know what to expect from State & Main ā€“ if youā€™ve walked into one, youā€™ve walked into them all. That being said, Iā€™m never terribly disappointed in the food at these places, and I usually leave satisfied! So, itā€™s time I take you out to T-cons to see what State & Main is all about. The reason why State & Main might seem so familiar is because itā€™s the same owners as Original Joeā€™s, and they even share the same head office is Calgary. Once you step foot in the door you will be taken away in the sultry mood lighting and feel like you are in a commercial. Ok, maybe not, but thatā€™s what they are going for. There are a couple things Iā€™d like to point out before we get to the club. 1- the menu is open face, therefore you canā€™t close it to show you are ready to order. How
