Review Good Earth Chop Suey House - Winnipeg

Jose Costa
I ordered the spicy ginger pork. There was noting spicy about it. The pork must have been earlier frozen. I could have put some sauce on my soles and it would have been more tender. There is no excuse for this Quality of food if you want to stay in business please step up, you have lost my future business.

Food was delivered hot and right on time! The flavors were great and this is the best crispy shrimp I've had! Cantonese chowmein was full of crispy vegetables, beef and broccoli was amazing on top of their complimentary fluffy white rice. Very pleased and looking forward to ordering again! Thank you!

Generally the food is pretty good but the egg foo yong sauce needs work....probably just beef broth...no texture and no taste....but the egg foo yong itself was ok.

From order taking (by a live person who is personable, patient and knows their stuff, not a robot), to delivery (hot, safe, followed all requests from timing to the spot to leave the food), to a delicious dinner on the table - incredibly great tasting food, all round amazing place to order from. I recommend adding the Good Earth Special Chow Mein (number 7 on the menu) to your order - so good. Thank you Good Earth and all your staff. 100% excellent.

We ordered for office lunch, food was really bad, didn't taste good/fresh at all :(. I threw away the pork that came in C3 as it looked and tasted old and the sesame chicken dish ordered was not fresh at all.

Our family ordered an assortment of dishes for Christmas Eve and we weren't impressed this time. The food wasn't as tasty as usual and there seemed to be lots of celery as fillers in many dishes. The lemon chicken was also a bit tough. We can usually cut through with your fork but we had to use a knife this time.

Didnot like the szcheun chicken at all. The spice level and flavour was below average. Not returning. Service not good as well.

We order pickup here all the time, for years. Dined in a few times also. Excellent food and service.

This is the best Chinese food I’ve had in Winnipeg. My favourites are the deep fried shrimp and lemon chicken. I always order for delivery and it arrives within time specified and hot. Portions and prices are good.
Very excellent Buffet Monday to Friday , it's worth the drive. The staff's are very friendly and helpful, the dishes that come out are very fresh tasty. The only drawback I find is the parking ., its a challenge I ..been there numerous times, will definitely be back .. . They sit you fast and its all you can eat. Can't beat the price either approximately $11.00 plus tax

My new favorite Chinese food restaurant. Definitely one of the two best ginger beefs in Winnipeg. Food is always fresh and hot. Keep up the great work folks.

Ordered take out the other night from Good Earth as it had been quite a number of years since I ordered here.
Tried a few items from the menu: special/deluxe chow mein, deluxe fried rice, breaded veal, chicken balls with a hot sweet sauce, sesame chicken and ginger beef.
The chow mein with veggies, BBQ pork, chicken and shrimp tasted fresh. The chicken balls absorbed majority of the sauce but the chicken balls weren't overly breaded and tasted alright. Sesame chicken was pretty good but I didn't overly care for the breading on it. The ginger beef was good and the fried rice was okay.

I found here to be a pricier than other Chinese restaurants around and no free fried rice when you spend a certain $.
(That's a bonus but not a deal breaker for me) ☺️

Not bad

After reading so many positive reviews we decided to drive across town to try their food. I like authentic Chinese food but I also like Americanized Chinese, if it's good. Did we order the wrong things? I don't know. We had lemon chicken, spring rolls and dry breaded ribs. We only ordered 3 dishes as I did not see anything on the menu that appealed to me. Usually would order a noodle dish and a vegetable dish but the waitress assured us they do not serve "Chinese vegetables". Whatever that means. The spring rolls, were huge not the usual delicate little rolls I'm used to - they were the size of egg rolls and had the same filling. The oil they were cooked in was somewhat rancid. I tried it but my friend could not stomach the smell of it. Lemon chicken is always a hit or miss - when it's a hit, I love it. This one was a miss on several levels. Will definitely not be coming back.

Good Earth is one of the best Chinese restaurants in St. James! Flavors are great and portions are generous, although the rice is dry/crunchy at times. It's quite pricey if you don't go during the lunch buffet, but well worth it as a treat! Make sure you order in advance on Saturdays, as they are very busy that night.

pretty good. i was suprised because chinese food is hit and miss no matter where you go. had a combo 4. chow mein was delicious and the chicken balls were on point. not over battered at all. good sweet and sour sauce to. thats key. im gonna hit it again for sure.

Favorite place to go for lunch buffet, to bad their dining room wasn't bigger. Always full of customers for lunch. Great selection and great price. Friendly staff/owners/

Need to update their website, tried to order form here a few months back and the number on their website was wrong. We weren't able to order since we couldn't find the correct phone number.

Such a good buffet! Me and my boyfriend came in for lunch today planning on getting a couple of combination plates but after seeing the buffet (we aren't suckers) we knew we had to get it. It was only 9.99 a person and with tax came to about $22.50 for the both of us (we had water to drink). Excellent value!!

The buffet itself had about 12 different things including a delicious wonton soup, fried crispy wontons with hot and sour sauce, fried rice, vegetable lo mein, honey chicken, sweet and sour pork and egg rolls. I haven't been to many real Chinese buffets, only Americanized ones with a few Chinese options (Royal Fork, Ye's) so I don't know what most of them are like but I was really impressed with the food and the price, especially since we ordered what would be about one plates worth of meat and noodles from the buffet from Famous Wok at the mall about a week ago and it was around $13.

The highlights for us were the honey chicken, which was sweet and perfectly cooked in a crispy coating, the sweet and sour pork and the wonton soup. It's very rare that I don't find a wonton soup broth bland and I didn't even want to put soy sauce in this one!

The restaurant itself isn't a fine dining establishment by any means, so skip it if you're looking for a cozy or sophisticated date night, but stop in if you're looking for lunch and bring your appetite. I haven't really had a look at the menu so I don't know if it's worth it to come back for dinner or to make it a go-to takeout spot but I definitely will be back for the buffet soon.

Took just under an hour and a half to get here (I live about 3 minutes away on Portage as well) So that was dissapointing.. their debit machines didn't work (I tried over 5 times) so I had to borrow money from one of my guests who were already upset about having to wait half an hour longer then we were told on the phone.. The food was decent, but for 45$ and 4 small dishes and an hour and a half wait I don't think I'll be a returning costumer.

First thing first, the food was OK. They offered Cantonese cuisine which was americanized to fit the local people's taste. We ordered good earth chow mein, Singaporean style chow mein and egg fooyoung. The first dish was essentially all kinds of meat you can think of thrown in one same plate and served with noodles, will not order it again next time. The rest were tasty, nothing too special but we did enjoy our dinner. Service was surprisingly friendly, considering all those negative comments here. Will come back again, but mainly because of the price and the location.

Came for the buffet. There were about 12 items to choose from. Tried them all and found all of them very tasty. Went back for seconds and even thirds on some of the items. Much better than mall food and the buffet is a much better value.
Still not my favorite Chinese food restaurant but I would say that this is my 2nd favorite Chinese buffet I've been to.
I would come back.

We have only ordered takeout and have been for years. It is the best Chinese food restaurant that we have ever ordered from and would never order from any other restaurant. The servings are fresh, tasty, not overcooked and in abundance. We will give the luncheon buffet a try next time around but I have to have a big appetite knowing they will serve a lot of food.

One night shift in the hospital, I and my co-workers decided to get Chinese food. They ordered at Good Earth but it was just ok, typical oriental food.I got the sweet and sour ribs but they were terrible. The pork bbq is not too bad though. Overall, just ok. There are better restaurant than this if you love Chinese foods.

Love this place! I'm from the north end but whenever my boyfriend's family eats Chinese food, this is the go-to place. Beef and baby corn is my fave! ☺️ keep it up Good Earth! Even if you spelled my name wrong last time i ordered for pick up! Haha!

An office mate who is a regular took me to this place as he loves to eat Chinese buffet. At $10.95 per person you'll get a variety of food in the buffet menu. The food was OK, a typical Chinese food just like anywhere else- lots of MSG that makes the food tastier but not good for your blood pressure-LOL.The fried chicken though came in big portion. Nice friendly owner.

Great Chop Suey. We order about twice a year. The food is very good.

Great Place To Feel Bad About Life. I think the only reason I was here was because my next door optometrist was on a lunch break so I had 30 minutes to kill.

Got to try out the buffet.
Look, if you're the kind of person that enjoys mall Chinese food in a non ironic way then you'll probably like this.
If you want real non-authentic Chinese food then you'll probably love this.
f you like waitresses that are super rude and act pissed off when you ask for a fork or hot sauce then you'll love this.
If you're really hungover and want to feel worse about your miserable life then you'll love this.

Bottom line: it's generic Americanized Chinese food with crappy decor. If this is what you're into then go nuts.

Not enough shrimp. March 16,2015
just ordered from good earth combo a2 I got 2 shrimp,, I called them, asked them, why I only got 2 shrimp, they said that is how there combos are, I said well send me out more shrimp they said no... well they are on there way to pick up this combo, I will have eggs and toast for supper, I will never order from them again.

Breaded Shrimp. The cook at you location has the magic touch and knows when they are cooked to perfection
Carly
The food is good! Enjoyed my meal! They were very busy with take out orders, I counted 10 ppl picking up while I was there so that says a lot for the place! The service was great!

Come starving and go for the buffet!. Not a high-class restaurant, but it's always chock-full of customers. Where I work, it's a favorite among my co-workers. The buffet is around $11-something with tax, if you only have water to drink. This isn't the type of place you take your sweetheart to propose, but it is a great value to take your appetite, if you like Chinese buffet.

Friday night Chinese. My sister-in-law has been telling me about this place and I finally ordered some for us all last night. YUMMY. Ordered the dry breaded shrimp, breaded veal, chicken balls, lemon chicken(the best sauce ever), 2 kinds of fried rice, mixed vegies, the good earth chow mein special...everything was oh so wonderful, fresh, not greasy. LOVED IT!!! Finally found a really good Chinese food place...THANK YOU!!!

Mobile. I don't usually go to Good Earth but my family and I went on Christmas Day and the food was the worst I've seen for the price.
We ordered schezuan beef and it was hardly any meat in it. There was a bowl full of sauce with a tiny few pieces of meat in it and topped with few chunks of veggies. The same went for all the other dishes - hardly any meat in them. I will not go there again. I expected the meals to be better at Christmas.

Overall = Quite Costly..Crunchy light breading yet succulent juicy large shrimp among the best in the city!. One of the most expensive of all Chinese places.
This clashes greatly with the fact the lunchtime weekday buffet is so reasonable.
I will note that the chow mein and chop suey is fresh, light and savory. not gluey or starchy.
The lightly breaded shrimps better than any seafood place can offer. Likely these large butterflied prawns among the best in the city by far. Crunchy light breading yet succulent juicy large shrimp.
The soup broth is bland. The fried rice is okay but tastes better if you request extra onions.
The veal was very expensive as is almost everything and not tender, very sinewy in fact. Disappointing and will never order that again here. My entire party agreed.
The service is always pleasant and very accommodating.

Ordered takeout last night, the food is so fresh and awesome, they never fail me ..we were awing at every bite..

Ordered a "Delux dinner for one" sweet & sour Jumbo shrimp, fried rice, dry breaded ribs and Chineese Delux veggies!
The plate was filled on the bottom with the so called fried rice, broccoli, cauliflower, celery & carrots as Chineese veggies, 2 shrimps breaded and missing the "Jumbo"! There was more breading on the ribs than meat all 6 tiny pieces. Feeling ripped off; paid $14. for a bowl of rice and....what ever!
They can do better... Because it was! Once.
LuvFood
One of my favorite chinese restaurant in winnipeg. They have the lightest breading on the chicken ball and crispy shimp. Also the shang hai noodles is a must try

The best tasting sesame chicken and vegetarian hot and sour soup I've ever had! You gotta try it!
Myron
Maybe the best Chinese in st James. Buffet is hot, and most dishes are tasty. Take out has been great. Could improve on the beef, though.
Kristen Lourie
Wonderful! The food was delicious and super fast and our waitress was very friendly and nice. Will definitely come back :)

Amazing. The best Chinese food in the city hands down. My brother comes in from San Diego and literally the first place we go is to the Good Earth!
Wpgfoodie
Slightly above average. Take out food is hot and order is done up quickly, S/s breaded pork was good. The vegetable lo mein would be nice with more veg than a few shreds of carrots and onion. Fried rice is saturated with soya sauce and packed tight in a styro soup container with strips of processed chicken on top, yuk! Honey glazed spicy chicken is good as well as ribs in black bean and garlic sauce.

I have been dining here for quite some time. They have an excellent lunch buffet. Great selection for only $10 and you can even get it for take out (as much as will fit in one container). I have not had a bad dish yet. Everything is tasty.

Have been eating in and delivery of Good Earth for three years. Always tasty, always lots of food and usually fast delivery. Great sweet chili chicken.

Always good but needs more variety. We started ordering from Good Earth after having several major problems ordering from the Wok House.

The food is always good, delivered on time and is good quality. I get cravings for their lemon chicken and their golden dragons!

My only complaint is that there really isn't much for variety. They basically have battered chicken, unbattered, battered/unbattered beef and about 4 different sauces that they toss with the meat.

I'd love to see some more variety but other than that they are the best Chinese food in the city!

Good Buffet. Yes the buffet is canadian style chinese food but it is fresh and reasonably priced at $10 including taxes. Includes all the standard items. All the meat is boneless and in some sort of breading.
Jon
Good Food poor service. I placed an order online for the Chicken Chow Mein and received chop suey. Beware what they call Chow Mein. They tried to claim that the dry noodles (in the tiny package) is what makes it Chow Mein. Wrong. This is an error on their menu, everything thats in the Chow Mein section is actually CHOP SUEY.

The person I spoke with refused to have another driver send out actual Chow Mein and offered me a credit. I asked if I would have to spend another $25-35 dollars in order to receive delivery next time or if the Chow Mein can be included as part of the fees. They told me no, that Free stuff isn't included as part of the delivery. I said thats BS, because I ordered Chow Mein and received Chop Suey so I essentially already paid for it.

They eventually said fine that they would include it as part of the total so I dont have to spend $35 more to get delivery.

Poor customer service. You mess up someones order or mess up your menu then its your job to fix the problem. They should have had someone send out actual Chow Mein right away and fixed their menu, instead they give me a hard time.

Food is excellent so far but, the service, is POOR.

We visited on a Thursday at about four-thirty. Decent inside, pretty typical decor. Server was very polite & helpful. To start we had spring rolls (bigger than most and very good!) and consommé soup, which was very good indeed! Also eaten tonight was the Good Earth Cantonese Chow Mein (portion size was very good and it was tasty but not too different from many), all ingredients seemed very fresh; curry beef was decnt in portion and very good, maybe a slight touch salty but this can be expected in a curry dish, so I don't fault 'em. The spicy honey glazed chicken was very good and this is because it's not in the traditional (and often over-battered) ball form! They could take a note from Good Fortune though, and make that honey GARLIC, but that's just my opinion and I can't fault 'em for that! We didn't get a knife with our cutlery but this is minor, as we surely could have asked for them but did not.
In closing, I guess I'd rate it a high seven, maybe eight. Definitely nothing bad to report!
Tim
Wonton soup. VERY full of ingredients! Very good wontons and very good broth. I can't say enough about the portion and the price.

Didn't get what we ordered for take out. We have been regulars of this restaurant for many years and have never really had a complaint until today. We usually eat in and love the combination plates along with a serving of Cantonese Egg Foo Yong. Not to mention that their buffet is also an excellent option and price. Today being New Years Day we thought we'd start the New Year by ordering Chinese food for take out. The order was pre-ordered and they were quite busy so their was a bit of a wait. When we took the order out at home we realized that we didn't get the Cantonese Egg Foo Yong that we ordered, so we called them, they argued with us that it couldn't be prepared the same way for takeout that it is for eat in. Well I'm not quite sure I understand what that has to do with putting shrimp in the Cantonese Egg Foo Yong whether its for eat in or take out. After arguing with the manager for several minutes and being put on hold several times we finally reached an agreement that we'd bring our receipt in next time we go and they'd give us some time of discount. It's unfortunate that some of these people don't speak English but I still expect to get what I order (I don't like it went someone trys to rip me off, then puts the blame on me). Right now I rate this restaurant rates at a 7/10, but I could put it back up to 10 if they rectifiy the situation next time we dine in.
Mike Lefebvre
Worst Chinese food ever!. Ordered three dishes and 2 were wrong! The rice was dry and overcooked and the shrimp and black bean sauce was watery and inedible!

Not to mention they sent us with the wrong soup.

NEVER going back.
Anne Martin
Poor Service. I can't beleive this happened today. I went to the Good Earth by myself for lunch today. I was seated at a table by the staff and went up to get my food. When I came back to the table my coat was gone and I was told by the staff member no wear to sit, is full. I said pardon me you seated me and where is my coat. They handed me my coat and told me they had to give the table to regulars. I put my plate down and put on my coat and they had the nerve to aske me to pay for my meal. I said I did not eat it and they said well you put it on a plate and we can't sell it. Wow, I will never go back to this restaurant again and I have been their alot with coworkers and had considered myself to be a regular.

Yummy. This place never lets me down. The food is incredible. My only wish, is that the buffet was bigger. :)

Good not Great. Food was okay, place was clean, ladies were helpfull. fr the Buffet, had to watch to get the fresher portion's. couple trays seem to sit for awhile before they were filled but wasnt the Greatest food I have ever had. the price for 2 buffets was $20 flat which is very reasonable.

Overrated, underdelicious. Yeah that's right.. underdelicious!

I have been told to come here by so many people, that it just has to be one of the more popular Chinese restaurants in the city, and yet every time I visit, I am never wowed by their food.

Every single time I go, they end up burning my rice. Rice is one of the most basic things to cook. Cultures have been doing it for thousands and thousands of years. Different chefs have perfected ways of cooking the rice over those many hundreds of generations, and yet here we are in the 21st century burning rice? You don't know what you're doing in the kitchen.

Of all the dishes I've ever had there, there was a chicken dish that wasn't too bad. Everything else was very "Canadian-style" Chinese with lots of sweet and sour, or with very bland spicing.

I'm thinking that the reason people like this place so frequently is simply because they haven't ventured out to try other places. It's been around forever and many people feel it's a staple. To me, I feel no need to go back.
Proud Cat Mom
This is the best Chinese in the city! Great flavours and fresh veggies in all the dishes. Had a chili chicken that was out of this world!! My husband loves the veal too :) chicken balls are great and don't miss the chow Mein!

Always Happy. I heard from a friend that this place was good. Ordered the Szechuan Beef and fell in love. Have ordered it at least 6 times in the last two months and have never been disappointed. My wife does not like spicy food but I persuaded her to try a bite. Now she orders it as well and sits across from me sweating and swearing this is the last time she is going to have it. Yet every time I order she orders the Szechuan again. Delicious.
Dharris
This is the best place bar none. I have eaten at the Good Earth for 45 years, followed it through at least three relocations and changing staff. I have not found a better Chinese restaurant. No one can beat their dry breaded shrimp. We have never had a bad meal there. But we sure have had bad meals at other places.
Radiation_Therapist
Great Buffet, Not-So-Great-Otherwise. Affordable lunchtime buffet, and pretty darn good, too. But we ordered the lemon chicken, ginger beef, sweet & sour pork & chicken chow mein off the regular menu a couple of times now and both times were so greasy and disgusting (you just felt awful afterwards!) that I couldn't even eat the leftovers the next day. I mean not eat Chinese leftovers? That's not-so-good in my books.
Ria
Yummy!. The first time I tried the food I wasn't thrilled with it. Luckily I stuck with it and have come to find some items that I like alot. Their Shanghai Noodles are delicious, but the dish I like the best is the Deep Fried Shrimp in Garlic Sauce. It's the dish that keeps me coming back. I have found 2 or 3 other chinese restaurants that I like better on the whole, but none of them have their shrimp.

...most of the Earth’s stir fried dishes are well cooked without excessive fat. The beef-fried veggies come perfectly cooked, crispy and juicy. They lightly fry the broccoli and cauliflower, leaving them rich in nutrients. Questionable buffets leave their foods to bask in heat lamps, leaving them desiccated and fossilised. The Earth rotates its food regularly to ensure that most of the vegetables stay optimally cooked.
