Review Steve's Bistro - Winnipeg

Was o.k. not a real fan of fountain pop. Would rather have canned or bottled. Ordered a meal (pita)with no onions. Got onions. Wasnt impressed. Nice place. Probably won't go back. Pic is of mederterranian burger

Went for lunch with a group of coworkers. The service was fantastic and the food was great. Everyone seemed very happy with their meals. It was my first time there. Looking forward to going back with my husband!

I’ve been to Steve’s Bistro a number of times over the years and it’s a decent place. The food is generally pretty good. And Steve, the owner, is super friendly and will stop by your table to check in on you and strike up a conversation. The restaurant is nicely decorated and has a comfortable feel. However, I find that the food can be inconsistent – i.e., the beef dip can sometimes be amazing and other times just average. But when the food is good, it's quite good. I just wish it was consistently so. On the past few visits I’ve ordered soft drinks and it’s always tasted a bit off. I’ve kindly asked them for a new soft drink on such occasions, and they fiddled with the soft drink dispenser behind the bar and improved it. But, after several requests like this over several visits, I have just stopped ordering soft drinks. Their desserts are pretty good so this is a decent place to stop in for coffee and dessert. I’ve never ordered breakfast here but the menu for it looks really good.

Steve's Bistro has become a regular attendance for us for breakfast, lunch and dinners. What keeps us coming back?...The friendly and attentive staff and also the consistency of preparation of the dishes. You can always count on Steve and his staff preparing your meals with a touch of Greek flavor and you can trust that it will always be consistently great. Today was no exception when 6 of us attended for breakfast and we had the Greek omelette, BLT and of course the Winnipeger. We highly recommend Steve's Bistro as your destination.

Hadn't been for awhile and as soon as I decided to go, mouth was watering! Did not disappoint! Same fabulous mussels and fries as always. Friend tried cheese steak panini and loved it. Quality food and quality service.

Tried Steve's for lunch. Excellent gyro, probably the best I've had! The owners are incredibly quick and hospitable. This is a local gem. Steve even came out from the kitchen to ensure we had a superb dining experience. Thank you!

Good Greek food, also staff were very accommodating with my fiance's dietary requirements.

Claudia and I enjoyed a wonderful lunch (Greek salad, veggie burger and a tossed salad) here today. The food, service and atmosphere were all excellent, plus we we had a nice chat with both the owner Steve and our server Deena. This is a place we will definitely make a point of visiting again!

This was my first time at this restaurant and I found it to be a nice, comfortable and clean restaurant. The food was so tasty and fabulous! The dessert (red velvet cake) was scrumptious! The server was awesome, especially after she recommended the red velvet cake :) I will definitely being dining here again!

By far one of my favorite restaurants. Food, service, location all excellent. Ben hooking to Steve's for many years and although the menu and space have changed over time, I can't recall once in all the years not having a 5 star experience

Was there on Saturday with 3 friends, after doing "The Great Escape". I ordered the special which was a Gyro, tasty enough except it lacked enough tzatziki sauce. I asked the waitress for a little more which I received and by the way didn't have the real tasty flavor. I hadn't noticed till I received my bill there was a $3.00 for a charge as a side. I should have spoke to the waitress but didn't. I wouldn't order again ans as was suggested Olympia diner serves a much better Gyro. Actually, Opa's fast food at Polo Park serves a much better Gyro and will give you lots of very tasty sauce.
Overall was very disappointed....
The Heavy Hitters
We really wanted to like this place, being in the neighbourhood with relatively good reviews, we really did. Gave it about 3 shots. We've tried some appetizer/tapas like the dips with pita bread, calamari and the pita pizzas. While all were pretty good, they are very tiny and very expensive, making Segovia look like a bargain bet in comparison.

The chicken souvlaki pitas are also were good enough tasting but at 16$ a piece they really should include a Greek salad as a side option, especially for a Greek restaurant. Instead, if you don't want fries or a very plan garden salad there is a $2 up charge. Even if you want half fries half tossed salad they upcharge $1. So basically for $18 you can get a decent chicken souvlaki pita and Greek salad.... only a couple or so blocks away is Olympia where you can get or a variety of sides and MUCH better quality tasting for like $5 cheaper. Go there instead.

Last straw was the veggie burgers. After looking at the ones on the posted menu on zomato (which is clearly outdated on ingredients and prices) we decided to give them a whirl. The burgers were very substandard. On what seemed to be cheap buns, the patty, while alright tasting, had nothing to compliment it. It was topped with a couple pieces of spring mix salad and tomato slice. No other toppings, no cheese (although cheese is not a deal breaker if the burger is good), no condiments. We didn't even finished the "burgers". Mr. Hitter enjoyed his small side of fries and Mrs. Hitter paid the upcharge for the dakos side salad. The dakos side salad is like a true greek salad with balsamic rusk bread croutons, feta all the veggies and no lettuce. That was great. In fact. Olympia just added it to their menu, try it there instead.

Can't comment on the really pricey bistro dinner stuff like the steaks. We aren't usually fancy people and if we were feeling like it it certainly wouldn't be at this place after our experiences.

It was my first visit to Steve's Bistro and it sure won't be my last.
I came here with friends around lunch hour. I ordered the Souvlaki Pita/gyro - lemon chicken. With that I chose the salad and made it a Greek salad. French fries as well with my order too.
I was very pleased with the pita. The tzatziki was tasty along with the lemon marinated chicken.
Our server was very attentive and great.
I'm close by this place and I'm happy I finally came by to check it out. I'll be back there soon :)

I checked out Steve's with the intent of trying them out.

I looked at the prices and they are on the high side for a strip-mall Bistro.

I asked the front desk staff about what was good and whether they had daily special and received a curt and rude response.

So I left. I cannot comment on the food because the service, price and attitude was repulsive before I even had the chance to try it.

Too bad since it is very close to where I live.

Maybe I will try it again in the future but for now there are many attractive alternatives in the area and no compelling reason to put up with the attitude and prices of Steve's.

Visited November 2016

Enjoyed the lunch at Steve's. I appreciate a good Greek salad with fresh veggies. Good amount of cheese as well. Needs some work on the atmosphere and ambience. Service was good.

Went here for lunch over the weekend with my mother. Apart from one other couple, the restaurant was empty. My mother ordered the battered fish with fries and I ordered the baked brie. When the meals arrived and my mother proceeded to cut into the fish, liquid and raw batter oozed out. We brought this to the server's attention. She was apologetic and offered to get us a new order. After about 15 minutes, the cook (who I presume to also be the owner), came out and brought the plate with the the same soggy fish-like blob to my mother. He told us that he had popped it into the oven for a few minutes. We were so appalled at the cheapness and audacity of this man. The fish looked almost the same, only now it had a delightfully rubbery texture. The brie was okay. Nothing to write home about. I will definitely not be eating here again. A complete waste of money.

Great food, nice ambience and super staff. We had a great dinner tonight -- the Dakos salad with garlic shrimp added on was terrific. The Greek Salad with added garlic shrimp also looked amazing. We ended the meal with a shared carrot cake which not surprisingly was really tasty. First time there for dinner and we will be back!

I came in for lunch with a family member about a week ago. I had never been to Steve's and she wanted me to try it out. We both got the soup of the day which was a vegetable beef barley. It was delicious with a bit of a spicy kick, but it was slightly hard to eat as it was served in a bowl that was halfway full in the height and shape of a flowerpot. It was too deep to eat the soup from. We decided to share the chicken panini with Greek salad and French fries, and it was very good. The restaurant has a nice, clean atmosphere and friendly staff.
OC
The lamb popsicles (rare-medium rare) were just great. They rival those of VJ's in Vancouver, but with Greek flare. Very Good ambience and talking with Steve, the owner, at the end of the evening finished the evening nicely.

Don't order the Gyro, not up to standard via taste or value. The special of the day was a steak sandwich, and it was done as requested. Great value. I suggest that you order from the Tapas menu. All the Tapas items were prepared properly and had great taste and value. Outstanding service, nice decor.

Nice atmosphere and good food!. It wasn't too long ago we went to Steve's for dinner on a Saturday night. The atmosphere of the restaurant was really lovely and the service staff was super friendly and prompt with getting our drinks and meals to us. We left here very full and pleased! The portions were pretty big and the food was delicious! Will certainly be back again :)

Not up to usual standards. Have eaten at Steve's on several occasions and was surprised at the poor quality overall on Saturday evening. I had the pickerel and it was overcooked in a lemon sauce that disguised the taste of a delicate and usually tasty fish. The rice was also mushy. We ordered the velvet cake which was dry around the edges and had obviously been left uncovered for a period of time. To top it off the coffee seemed to be burnt and when we ordered a replacement cup it was also bitter. Although the staff was very good Steve felt that it just the blend and didn't seem very concerned. Not my business but perhaps Steve could spend more time in the kitchen and less time chatting up the female customers.

Went for the first time tonight and enjoyed my meal. Friends also really enjoyed their meals and we all appreciated the scope of the menu. Will be back!

Pòor. We have wanted to try this out fo a while.Thursday there was aJets game so downwn was busy .Seemed like a good time to try Steves. We were the only customers .2 waitresses talking at the bar. And 2 men drinking at the bar staff and /or owner.Wè wàited ages while the girls talked. Às we got up to go ,one ran over to say, rather rudely "can't see anything you like?" BF decided to leave it alone . But it was the total lack of service. Not going back

Oregano does not make Greek Fusion. If I want oregano, I can sprinkle some on my food at home. When I have a hamburger, i want to taste the meat.

We checked out this place on a friend's recommendation. But, now that I think of it, this friend's judgment is pretty unreliable.

The prices struck us as expensive, but ok if the food merited it. We decided to test the waters first with hamburgers.
These came to about $16 with sides. The fries and salad were good but my burger, apart from being covered in oregano sauce,
tasted reheated and burned. It did not taste like a juicy, freshly-made patty. I prefer the Uncle burger at A&W.

To be fair, my wife enjoyed her burger. But Steve had the audacity to introduce himself to new customers after giving me a thoroughly mediocre burger.

I have great compassion for restauranteurs like Steve. It is a risky low margin business. But if you're going to do it, do it right.

A cut above the rest. Always worth it.. Steve's is just one of the best restaurants that I''ve been to. It's not a bland, over-priced chain. It's an independent place that puts a premium on the quality of the food. You pay for the quality of the food, but it's just worth it.

You've never been? Just go give them a try.

St.James Gem. I have been wanting to try this place for years! Finally went last night, and it did not disappoint. The service was wonderful, both meals were fantastic-Bistro Burger with Fries, and Chicken Souvlaki with Greek Salad. Portions were perfect size. Atmosphere is nice and everything is very clean. Cant wait to come back!!

Great place for dinner. I've been to Steve's Bistro twice now and both times have been great! My highlight is that in both random cases, Steve himself comes and sits with us, making sure everyone enjoyed the meals/service. I appreciate how involved he is in such a great place. Looking forward to going back again soon.

Amazing food. Perfect atmosphere. I took my boyfriend out for dinner at Steve's Bistro. We ordered the scallops to start and I am not kidding, they were the most amazing scallops I have ever had. He had the special for dinner. Steak with a garlic sauce and it was perfect! I cannot express how amazing this restaurant is! My new favourite place! :)
Craigsk
West end diner. Been there a couple of times and decided to take friends there. They like Mussels and two at our table had eaten mussels in Europe and most notably in Paris. She said "hands down best Mussels in town". Much better than "other places" in Winnipeg noted for mussels. I had the stir fry (very tasty) and my partner had the Halibut (excellent taste and properly done). Definitely a return trip is in order.
Mike
Had the Ruben and Greek salad. Great food and quick. Will come here again.
Lauren
Amazing food, great service. Steve is the best. Would recommend to anyone.

Good choice for an evening out!. My husband and I, along with various friends, have been to Steve's Bistro twice in the past few months. On each visit we each ordered a different appetizer and a different entree and then shared, so everyone could try a variety of items. Everything was delicious; especially the calamari and the grilled portobello. Good food; friendly service; nice atmosphere; reasonable prices.........overall a great place for an evening out. We are going there with friends again this evening and know we will not be disappointed!
Brad
Amazing lunch! The food was incredible and the service was wonderful. The bistro is located in an unassuming strip mall but inside the decor was a nice surprise. I will be back for sure.
Kathy32199
GREAT FOOD. Nice place, really really good food! Had the calamari, pita & tziki (apologies for the spelling). Calamari was tender and delicious, pita was warm and fresh... so good!! Need to go back soon - wish they weren't across town from me!
Conmigo
Nothing to complain about. I had the stuffed portabello--so delicious! Everyone else in my group also really liked the food and agreed we would absolutely come back.

Eat here.. Visited Steve's Bistro for lunch yesterday. Enjoyed the food. Sweet and Sour soup with tofu was just the right combination of sweet, sour and spiciness. My second course was Chicken Panini with fries. My wife had Chicken Souvlaki with fries. We both felt our sandwiches were a little on the bland side but that's probably just us –we lean towards spiciness in pretty much everything we eat. The fries were great as usual and plentiful.

Service was friendly, quick and attentive.

This was our second visit to Steve's. We live outside the city but make a point of dining here whenever we're in the area.

So good!. We've been to Steve's several times before and always had good meals, but it was our meal last week that prompted me to write a review. I tried something different: the traditional Greek salad with the calamari, and pita and tzatziki on the side - SO DELICIOUS! Having been to Santorini recently, the salad was spot on traditional (and I like that they warn you that it has no lettuce!) but the calamari was the star. So crisp and perfectly cooked, I could've eaten them for days. And the pita was beautifully fresh and warm, the perfect side.
My hubby always gets the fries on the side, which the rest of us help him finish as they're always yummy and such a big portion.
I've never been before it was a bistro, so I can't comment on that, but I love the way it is now. A week later and I'm still thinking about that calamari...!

Loved this place before it turned to bistro. Went one time when it switched over....husband couldn't eat his meal (horrible) and they said that's how people like it and made us pay full price for something not ate!!!!!! Never again!

The food was very salty, when the waitress came to clear our plates she asked if we would like the barely eaten meals packed up, we declined. This should of raised awareness that the food was not satisfying.

Visited last night for my work Christmas party! The place was clean and most of all the food was incredable. I'm already planning my next visit.
Jim Gibbons
Well, I was a little disappointed. The The place is clean and the servers are fast and friendly. My burger was a little dry and loaded with garlic. I will definitely give it another chance.
Graham
Great meal!. Had a fantastic ribeye with a nice cold Stellas. Dining partner had the grilled chicken breast. Both were prepared very well. Service with a smile & we were asked several times how our meal was going. Haven't been to Steve's Bistro in years and I'm very regretful I waited so long. Go have a meal! Thumbs up!

Great Food, Too Loud. Enjoyed a veggie pizza loaded with fresh toppings on a perfectly baked thin crust. Such a huge variety on the lunch menu made it hard to choose. The customer service was excellent. My only complaint is that given the small size of the bistro, the high ceilings and the awful sattelite radio blasting overhead, it was impossible to hear what our friends at the other end of the table were saying (there were eight of us). Next time I'll try the patio.
Prune
Disappointed. Went to Steve's with a friend from Ottawa for dinner. Have eaten there about five times and had good experiences. Two people ordered the Red Snapper Special. The server came back to the table and told us there was only one Special left but if fish was what they wanted Halibut was available. Ordered the Halibut and it was dry...seemed thawed...tasteless and did not come with sides promised with Special. In fact it barely came with sides...but it did cost the same as the Special. Our bad for not complaint but our out-of-town guest said it was no big deal. It is a big deal to pay $26.00 for a meal prepared with little attention to freshness and flavour! If you eat here ask lots of questions a out your meal before ordering.
Gemma
It's not that I hated it.... I just didn't LOVE it. We had the scallops as an appetizer and the rib tips. I bit down on too much grit with the scallops (wasn't sure if it was sand or char from cooking...) and I found the gravy on the rib tips a bit too much on the salty side. Overall....it wasn't a terrible meal, it was just meh.

Hands down my Favourite restaurant in Winnipeg. Has a fantastic selection and an amazing atmosphere. So friendly and warm. Mine and my spouses Special place. Always get the royal treatment. Thanks Steve!

I've been trying to find a good Greek salad in Winnipeg for 2 years. Guess what? Found one!!!!! Thanks Steve's Bistro. Yummay!!!! The feta, olives and olive oil were soooooo good. My new favourite lunch. :) thanks can't wait to go back.
Diboja
Great Food. Went to Steves for lunch today with friends.

Well prepared food and love those home made fries.
Drove all the way from North Kildonan which is a restaurant desert to try the food and was not disappointed.

The restaurant has high ceilings and when it is full of customers the sounds of people talking and the background music makes it just about impossible to have a conversation without raising your voice....we will be back but Steve has to do something about absorbing the noise.

A real gastronomical treat.
Jaime Aquin
I went here for my b day last weekend with my husband. He let me choose n e place in Winnipeg and I chose here. And glad I did. It was very good! I had a fantastic Greek salad and the baked Brie. My husband had the beef dip and also loved it. And Steve suggested the bread pudding for dessert which I had never had, it was amazing :) will go back !
Don D'Ercole
Steve's Bistro dinner for two. I took my mom out for dinner while on vacation in the 'peg. She had the lamb rack chops and I had the rib eye steak. A fantastic meal thanks to a great staff and of course the merlot. Thanks Steve. You've come a long way baby!!
Deb McMIllin
Oh my gosh soooooo good. 5 stars in my books. Great music great food. I am regular for 4 years and it just keeps getting better. Bravo!!!!

Clearly one of the best in town. If you love food, you love Steve's.
Pedro Richardson
Loved it! Comfortable atmosphere. Pleasant staff. Delicious food. Steve seems like a really great guy who takes pride in his diners' experience and in building repeat customers.
Brendan Barber
The meal was wonderful and the restaurant is very nice inside.
Brigitte
Great Food.... Love! Love! Love Steve's Bistro... Have been there many times, and the food is always the same... Delicious! They make the best Caesar's in the city!
We quit going to the Keg, as Steve's is much more affordable, and the food better! Have been recommending it to everyone! Service is great too! Try it you'll love it !!!
BrewsBrother
Stopped by an old favorite burger joint and enjoyed a decidedly more upscale dinner than the plate sized burger and fries that I used to have there!

There were two of us that split a panini and Greek salad plate, a prawn appy in a lemon cream sauce with sundried tomatoes/capers/feta, and a two dip tray with olive tapenade, and kopanisto (delicious!). Bill came to $40 and change (just food, no drinks).

We ate on the patio and were served promptly and politely. A slow night by the owners own admission, but well worth it for us.

We'll definitely be back with friends since it seemed to work out really well to share a few dishes and get more to sample, tapas style.
Sarah
Nice place!. Very Good food, even better costumer service. A restaurant that actually cares for the costumer and really makes you feel welcome
Azi
Fantastic food. I was there with my husband.we ordered steak and lamb.i just can say that not everyone can season beaf and lamb like that, they have very friendly atmosphere .i can say after trying all greek restaurant in winnipeg they are the best
Mike
Fine dining steak house this is NOT. Stick to the souvlaki, gyros and burgers. I had the steak and wow was it bad.
Mike Friesen
Delicious Homemade Soup. Great service and a really yummy sweet potato bacon soup. Interesting and quite good.

Service was notably good as well.
Camille
Fantastic service, amazingly delicious food, wonderful atmosphere! All around incredible experience! I look forward to going back next time I'm in Winnipeg!

Steve's is the BEST. I love the food, I love the atmosphere, I love the prices! Steve's bistro is a great little gem! I have had the stark with peppercorn sauce and it is amazing! The gyro is amazing. I have also been there for a late night snack, and Steve has whipped up a little special dish of rice, muscles, chorizo, I don't even remember what else, I just know I loved it! Steve is great!
Barny
Great food. Recently dined Hys and Velvet Glove, Steves put both of them to shame!!! Try the bread pudding...
Marena Wiens
Outstanding. My boyfriend and I went to Steve's Bistro recently for dinner and it was spectacular. I loved the feel of the restaurant, the waitress was attentive and very polite as was the owner. I ordered the Turkey panini and it was the best I've ever tasted the portions were very fair. I also ordered a bellini and it was overflowing, literally I absolutely got $5 worth out of it. The mud pie dessert was heavenly, will absolutely be back.
Cindy Pauls
The lamb was outstanding. Gyros were good too. Service was great. Server was incredibly well informed. We will be back.
TheDude
Service was good. The food and portions however were not. Steak not cooked the way we ordered it and the burger was bland.
Foodie
Great food and service!. I've been to Steve's Bistro twice and really like it. The first time we went, we thought that we were entering a deli/cafeteria low budget kind of place because of it's location in the strip mall. We were surprised to say the least when we walked in. We decided to stay and had the best calamari ever! (and a good greek salad too). The second time we brought some friends. My friends had the veal special and chicken greek salad and loved it. We had a panini (so/so) and the pastitsio which was good. Steve, the owner, was very friendly and our waitress was great. Would highly reccommend to anyone who likes real food. The prices were a little high on some items (16 dollars for a burger platter, but then maybe it is worth it, as I've never had it) and relatively moderate on others. All in all you need to check it out. We'll be back :) Oh, and an added bonus is a prix frix menu option!
Cdm
So good! Have been here 5 times and have had zero complaints! Great food...excellent decor...hard to believe that it's in a strip mall in portage ave....great job!

Breakfast served until 1130.. I came here this morning to check out their breakfasts while I was in the neighbourhood. The menu is not extensive but has 3 solid choices most would like.
I chose the Mega omelette with egg whites. It came with red & green peppers, tomatoes, red onions, feta cheese & Greek spices. It was light and tasty; served with hash browns and toast though a little pricey at $12. Service was very warm & friendly. Would definitely like to return to try their lunch/ dinner menu items !!
J And B
Mike from Chicago loved it. Our friend Mike travels to Winnipeg every year to visit neighbours he knew when he lived here in the early 70s. He enjoys taking people out to dine and this year he went to Hy's, Stepping Out, The Keg and Steve's.
He said that by far, Steve's was the place he enjoyed the most for atmosphere, great food value and excellent service. He also liked the touch that the owner, Steve, went to each table to chat. Its a real St. James treasure.
OinkOink
Must try the gyros!. One thing that really stood out for me here is the friendliness... and the gyros! Holy. SO good. For $7 too it's good and doesn't taste like crap and the portion is so generous you can skip the soup or fries.

Jazz and girls night out. Thursday night out with the girls!!! where do we go in st. james??? well lets try steve's bistro...... what a delight!!! i am so impressed with the wonderful atmosphere the service from both the girls we had that night serving us was lovely. the suggestions for just a few tasty appetizers and wine so we could listen to the jazz band and actually converse with each other at the same time. fabulous food, wonderful wine, great atmosphere and close to home is what we are looking for in a restaurant. this tops the list!!! i felt at home!!! the owner steve personally taking time to stop at everyone's table and chat with the customers. i personally felt that i was special and that i had known him all of my life. the food was the best part as i enjoyed the sauces in every appetizer that i tried and i look so forward to actually bringing my family and enjoying a full meal with desert. this is truly the best place i have been to in years our close friend got up and blew us away with her singing and we all walked out with smiles on our faces not really wanting the night to end.... we cant wait to go back!!! thank you steve for the enjoyable night out!!!
Suzanne
Terrific Lunch Special. What a great little spot! Today I ate a terrrific gyro/salad for 10.00! Excellent Service

Why hadn't we gone earlier?. The elegant-yet-funky atmosphere at Steve's makes it an ideal place to go with elderly parents and trendy teens alike. Its bold original oil paintings and whimsical wrought ironwork are a pleasant surprise, given the unassuming exterior.

To describe the service as "courteous" would be an understatement. Our server was very knowledgeable and sweet-natured, as well as diligent; my sons could barely set an empty pop glass on the table before a fresh one appeared, and the place was fairly busy. The wine list was remarkably inexpensive, and they offered $5 double martinis.

My husband took the beef short ribs at the suggestion of the server. They were the best ribs I've ever had, bar none. They were tender and flavorful, in a rich and delicious red wine gravy, served with parmesan mashed potatoes and tender grilled veggies. I ordered the special, a New York, and it easily rivaled its
counterpart at the Keg. The food was fresh, real, skillfully executed and beautifully plated.

And then there was free coffee! And we were also given coupons for free desert - I'm looking forward to trying the bread pudding next time.

In terms of atmosphere, service, and food quality, I would absolutely recommend Steve's. But what really sets the place apart is the genuine sense of caring on the part of the staff, without the overbearing formulaic service you expect at upscale-casual chains. Steve even came by and cracked some jokes with us.
Gail
Steve's Bistro is one of our favourite restaurants in Winnipeg. We are frequent customers to Steve's because the food is so good and the staff are extremely personable, courteous and friendly. Steve is always in the Bistro talking to everyone at their tables - you can tell he really takes an interest in his patrons making sure their visit is enjoyable.
We have been to Steve's for lunch and dinner with every meal being delicious from their daily homemade soups, great salads and entrees. Our compliments to the Chef!!
On special occassions, Steve's Bistro has a five course dinner that includes appetizers dips, soup, salad, a choice of three entrees and a choice of three desserts . It is truly fantastic!
The ambience of the restaurant is very cozy and relaxing with the friendly attentive staff taking care of you. If you haven't been to Steve's Bistro you are really missing out on a fabulous place to dine!!!

Awesome!. We have been going to Steve's regularly for some time now and trust us..... its not just the food that keeps us going back! Steve's is a cozy, well decorated St James restaurant that consistently provides great service, a warm atmosphere and yes "Awesome" food.

Although all menu items that we have tried were well prepared (appetizers, entree's and desserts), I would recommend trying one of his flavourful steaks (Steve's uses only Angus certified beef) or daily specials. The chef is amazing, Steve is a caring host and the prices are very reasonable!

See you at Steve's Bistro.......

Diamond in the rough. This easy-to-miss restaurant is tucked away next door to a Gondola Pizza in a stripmall in St.James and if it weren't for the fact that we were actively seeking this eatery we would have driven right past and not noticed. Making things worse for this restaurant is its proximity to more visible (from the street) restaurants such as Boston Pizza and the Keg.
Furthermore the restaurant does not boast an eye-catching exterior, however the interior is the polar opposite. There is a Mediterranean feel to the restaurant reflected in the internal architecture and the softly-playing music. The eye-level artwork embedded in the bench seating, orange walls, and dim lighting make for a very warm and comfortable atmosphere. To make things even more comfortable the owner actually seated us himself and throughout the evening he would gravitate from table to table making light-hearted conversation with his guests.

The menu prices are quite low especially when compared to the more popular chain restaurants like Moxies, Earls, etc. Being a whole-hearted carnivore and attending with a party of individuals with a similar palate, we all ended up ordering variations of the same dish: The highly recommended homemade burger. Sitting at a base price of $10 for burger and fries, I naturally assumed that for the listed price it must be a burger of diminutive stature, so myself along with the rest of the party went to town on the assorted customization options listed on the menu. I added an extra patty (+$3), bacon (+$1), Swiss Cheese (+$1), and changed my fries to a poutine (dont remember the price on this addition but it was pricier than the extra patty). Normally I avoid adding too many extras to a burger at a restaurant due to the escalating prices but considering how a combo at Wendy's can easily hit you for $10, it appeared worth it.

As we ordered the server was quite calm and polite despite our extensive modifications to the order and continued to keep our glasses of water filled.

When the owner came by our table to see how we were doing he explained how all the burgers are homemade with 100% Angus and that each patty was 6oz. Suffice to say the mountain of food we were presented with was overwhelming. As another positive note, everything was delicious! The beef was juicy, seasoned well and had an appetizing aroma to it; the buns were of proportionate size to the contents; the poutine had crispy fries, fair portion of cheese curds, and a thick gravy that was not overly salty. The best part: The entire meal wasn't greasy! Not being a 'chili-lover' I didn't get the chili however after trying some that another member of our party ordered as an add-on to their burger, I'll be certain to order it on my next visit. The unique flavor of the chili at Steve's can be contrasted sharply with the similarly flavored chili served at many other restaurants.

Due to the warm ambiance of the restaurant my friends and I stayed for nearly an hour after finishing our meals (trying to finish anyway!) just chilling. I will definitely be revisiting and highly recommend this restaurant to people looking to have a good eat and a good time.

Never in a rush. I like this place and frequent it often. I never feel rushed to pay and leave like other places. The atmosphere is relaxing and you can take your time.
I have brought many friends here and they all love it.

Gem in St. James. The restaurant is located in a strip mall with a pretty blah exterior but the decor inside is very warm and stylish creating a cozy and inviting ambiance. This is a great little bistro with good prices. I don't understand why Marion Warhoft (Wpg Free Press) went on and on about how high their prices are - so typical of Winnipeg to complain when a dish costs more than $10. I understand this was "Steve's Place" - a burger joint for many years before he renovated it last year and turned it into the current Mediterranean bistro style menu. Starters are $8-$11 and there are grilled pitas with various dips for only $3. The "kopanisto" dip is absolutely delicious! It is a blend of roasted red peppers and feta with a hint of heat. This was a very addictive starter with pillowy soft warm pitas that were lightly seasoned. The "pepper shrimp" ($9) is another great starter with garlic shrimp (6) in a creamy roasted red pepper sauce topped with feta and basil. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and the grilled pita that came with the dish were great to scoop up that delicious sauce.

Entrees range from $15-$29, with most in the $20 range. I enjoyed the "lamb rack chops" ($28) where you get 4 chops in a whisky citrus sauce, side of veggies and lemon roasted potatoes. The lamb chops were cooked to a perfect medium rare and were very tender and moist. The sauce was good but a tad sweet for my tastes so I'd try another dish the next time. The lemon roasted potatoes were not the typical Greek ones that I was hoping for but more like a hash brown type with only a slight taste of lemon (there's also the option of mashed potatoes or rice pilaf). The side of veggies were the largest portions I've seen in a while - tons of broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, onions, and peppers. I liked that they were lightly seasoned (might be bland for some) but it's way better than eating overly greasy and salty veggies.

Service is very warm and genuine. I liked how the owner, Steve, greeted every table and took the time to either walk patrons out personally or say thanks and good night to all the customers.

Steve's Bistro Review. Very relaxed yet upscale atmosphere, Excellent food and Great value. If you go once you'll be going back often. Also, the Wine List is full of unexpected & inexpensive delights unlike most restaurants that charge 3x times over retail prices. Well worth your next Dining Experience.

The Mediterranean burger is quite delicious, boasting all the usual Greek niceties like feta, tomatoes, and roasted red peppers. I certainly didn’t miss the bun!

We tend to forget that we have a wealth of Greek restaurants that offer fabulous food—and Steve’s Bistro sits among the best.

Steve's Place used to be an awesome, old school greasy spoon type place with great burgers and fries. They recently morphed into Steve's Bistro , a classy Greek and Steakhouse joint. I haven't been to Steve's since the change, so I was happy to try it out. The place looked gorgeous! It went from greasy spoon to a sophisticated eatery with good burgers. There is original artwork all over the place and a nice, romantic red-brown color scheme going on. Great makeover! The start of our night out at Steve's was a bit of a clusterfrizzle. There was a huge 14 person party taking over most of the small restaurant, and the servers were clearly stressing. But they took care of us regardless, seating us at the bar for an appetizer and a drink, then we were scooted us over to an actual table for the meal. I loved the grilled pita with tzatziki appetizer. Triangles of warm, soft and super fluffy pita with tangy tzatziki, for 3 dollars! I also really like these rectangular serving plates that seem t

I was first introduced to Steve’s Bistro by reputation. A good friend raved about his lunches and special dinner parties. When I arrived at the location on west Portage Ave., I was surprised to find that it was at the end of the street where we lived when we were first married. The current manifestation is barely recognizable from its original state ,as Steve’s Place has morphed from a burger stop to a cozy neighbourhood bistro that is beautifully appointed. I had met Steve on a previous visit. He is welcoming and gregarious and passionate about the food that he offers his guest. I did not see him on this day, as we arrived considerably later than the bulk of the lunch crowd. But the food was just as good as on previous occasions, even without his presence. My lunch date was a long time friend who I had just fetched from the airport. We both chose specials and hers was the Shrimp Caesar Salad. She asked our server about the garlic level and was told that it was not overly garli
