Review Garwood Grill - Winnipeg

NYB
We finally were able to go to the Garwood grill for an early dinner and we were not disappointed. It was fantastic as was the service. I had the beef tenderloin steak sandwich which was cooked to perfection it was one of the best steak sandwiches I've ever had. My dinner companion had the double cheeseburger with bacon and he said it was great. Fries and coleslaw were tasty , the shrimp was the only disappointment as it did not taste fresh and was not a fan of the panko breading on it. Still have to give this experience five stars because it was really good. Can't wait to go back and try something different.

I ordered the Chicken Gyro with fries and coleslaw and it was fantastic! Honestly, the best gyro I have ever had! The portions are very generous, the food was delicious, staff was so friendly, and it has a very small town restaurant feel. I will definitely return!

The quintessential diner experience. Huge portions, great breakfast and burgers, and those familiar plain white ceramic coffee cups make for a great place for breakfast with friends. The serving staff is friendly, chatty, and always hustling from table to table. Food arrives quickly and I don't think we have ever had an error with anyone's orders. The only reason they aren't getting 5 stars is the cleanliness of the place. Washrooms definitely need more attention, and sticky tables have happened on a couple occasions.

Bring your appetite!!! Delicious food, wide selection, impressive portions, and great staff! All things considered, I'd put this in the top 5 for "bang for your buck" in Winnipeg. This place will fill you up (and more) with amazing food - and won't break the bank. Highly recommend you check this place out.

This place was Delicious. A Very comfortable at home feeling and very pleasant service. Now the breakfast was way more than I was expecting and Oh So Satisfying. Huge portions for the hungry person such as myself, as im a healthy 6'4. Was so hungry I forgot to take photos, but this won't be the last time I come here as I think I just found my new breakfast place.

My dad had been raving to me about this place and I didn’t really want to go as we were working and didn’t really have time to stop. He assured me it was worth it. He has been there numerous times. I will try and be fair with this review. We went during lunch hour and after waiting about 10 minutes for a seat and getting seated we placed our order. 2 deluxe cheeseburger combos. It took about 45 minutes to get brought out and the first thing I do is go to add ketchup on the burger and there’s a huge black hair in the burger in the cheese. So I tell the waitress and she offers a slight apology and goes to get me a new burger. I wait another 5-10 minutes still very hungry and the burger finally arrives again. The burger was really good(even after losing a lot of my appetite after seeing the hair) but the fries and coleslaw were bland. My dad’s fries were over way cooked and we had told the waitress as well. No apology was made, no change on the bill and it just felt like the customer didn’t matter. I’m not a picky eater but I did not enjoy my experience one bit. I wasn’t trying to get a free meal but maybe a genuine apology, a slight discount or some acknowledgement that the establishment cared in some manner.

Great place for a nice breakfast. Cheap prices and friendly staff

Excellent food, service and home-cooked meals! Love this place. However, the Greek Chicken salad had tougher Chicken on the last two occasions we were there. Usually it is so melt in your mouth tender. Don't know what changed?

Wow amazing taste. Best kept secret if Winnipeg!

Came here on a whim because of all the good things we’d heard about it, and where do I begin? Absolutely terrible! I got the cheeseburger with bacon, fries, and coleslaw. The bun was dry, the meat was over cooked and had absolutely no seasoning to it, the bacon was greasy, old and cold, so the cold cheese that went on top was still nice and cold when it came to the table, not warm and melty and delicious, as you’d expect from a cheeseburger. The coleslaw was overly vinegary, and had an off taste about it, like it had sat for way too long. Half the dish the coleslaw was served in was dressing. I could barely stand to eat half of what I ordered. My mom got eggs, sausages, fried potatoes and toast. The eggs were over cooked, the sausages were over cooked, and a good portion of her potatoes were over cooked and inedible. Needless to say, we will not be returning, nor would we recommend it.

Garwood Grill is a family style restaurant located on Pembina Highway just a few blocks south of Winnipeg’s famed Confusion Corner. The Garwood Grill is one of those restaurants that is something of an institution. Once again however, it’s one of those institutions that until recently I’ve managed to avoid visiting. This despite the fact that I lived not far from the restaurant during a couple of stints of my early renting life.

We decided to pop into the Garwood Grill on Sunday afternoon for lunch and the place was packed. Parking is a bit of an issue. It's dark and dated but was very clean. We didn't mind because we were there for the food not the décor. I ordered the deluxe cheeseburger and the gf ordered the deluxe Denver sandwich. If you order their plater (FF and coleslaw) its now deluxe! The food was great and very low prices. I was shocked that they didn't offer chilli on their burgers like so many other greek family restaurants in Winnipeg do. The burger patty was thick but lacked flavor. We will defiantly go back to try other menu items.

Had to rate the restaurant in order to ask the question. Would like to know if there is Gluten Free items on the menu as nothing on the menu indicates one way or the other.

AWESOME !! This is the BEST family restaurant in the city....maybe that's why its been in business since 1946. ALL the food is between good and superb....breakfast Bacon and eggs , all their pizzas, hamburgers and fries,..all excellent 9 out of 10. Prices are modest and a great bang for your buck....only the highest quality ingredients,...all food is home made ......delicious large servings of home made soups....a warm beef sandwich with roast beef sliced from a home made roast....wonderful .

Their chicken fingers was really good at affordable price. They have a variety selections of comfort food and soup in their menu. Service wasn't friendly. Parking is a challenge. Won't be back.

Stopped in for lunch here with colleagues. There was a debate about where to go but Garwood seemed to satisfy everyone! Which is likely why Garwood has been around for so long. There really is something here for everyone.

The special of the day was a chicken finger platter(3 chicken fingers, fries and coleslaw) with soup for $9.95! What an awesome deal! My regular go to is the turkey club house platter which is $12.95.

The restaurant decor is dated, but everything is clean. Service has always been attentive at Garwood and you will not be disappointed with the food. The seating can be a bit cramped in certain sections of the restaurant.

If you’re in the area, there is no shortage of Greek/Italian family style restaurants. The Garwood can contend with any of them!

A great little place that's unassuming and tucked out of the way.
The food is excellent and the price is surprisingly low for the high quality ingredients and portions.

The service is efficient and you are mostly left alone other than to order, get your food and pay.
Great for groups, family and friends.

This is a great comfort food place and sometimes that exactly what hits the spot.

Garwood Grill has been around for decades and I always had fond memories of it. I decided to take the girlfriend and see if it's just as good as I remembered It.

The decor still looks the same. Walking in and sitting down almost feels like a trip through time. I ordered a lasagna with meatballs with a bowl of chicken noodle soup to start. The portions are huge. I could only make it through half of my lasagna before calling it quits. Both the soup and the lasagna were delicious and I made sure I saved some room for some apple pie and ice cream for dessert.

As a kid in the 90's, Garwood Grill was good, and I'm happy to say that Garwood Grill is still good in the 10's.

Just crushed a breakfast at Garwood Grill. Great service, awesome food that came quickly, and easy on the bank account. Will be coming back.

Every time Elle Bish and I come here it's a great(and filling) experience. Great food in big portions, helpful and friendly staff and a welcoming environment all come together here. You'll love it. Bring and empty stomach. I recommend the filet mignon & eggs breakfast, the chicken breast & spaghetti meal and the Greek salad, with or without chicken.

OK, my order is here.

I've read a lot of negative reviews, however, my experience at this restaurant has always been pleasant. I've ordered pizza, chicken gyros, and a few other items. I've never had a bad experience. I thought that the service was at a decent pace considering how busy this place gets. I know that they have a lot of regular customers. I love their chicken gyros and I'd definitely come back.

After reading the reviews for this place I had to try it. Well I can honestly say I won't be back. The service was slow food was not that great. So off to find another restaurant.
For what I ordered was a veggie gyro it had mostly lettuce and a couple pieces of tomatoe. My friend had the bacon omelette she said it wasn't the greatest wasn't warm.
Melody
I was really looking forward to going here as I've always heard great things. Unfortunately I was super disappointed in the experience. I ordered the chicken pita and fries with gravy. The fries were lack luster and looked like they came out of a bag and although the pita tasted great, I got sick afterwards. Once you have an experience like that at a restaurant, it doesn't leave you wanting to return.
Chantal
Pizza. Easily the best pizza in Winnipeg .
Good_Eats
Thought we would give Garwood Grill a try, unfortunately the experience doesn't make me want to go back. I got the Deluxe Cheeseburger, and while the patty is home made, it is quite bland and simply tastes like a mass of ground beef. The fries reminded me of a bag of no name generic fries that I had left in the freezer and cooked months after they expired. The coleslaw was ok, it reminded me of KFC's, minus the neon green colour.

My girlfriend got the Denver sandwich with Caesar salad. I thought the sandwich was alright, but the salad had bacon bits and what appeared to be unwashed Romaine lettuce. They chopped the lettuce but the bottom part was still bunched together and attached, which leads me to believe if they didnt separate the leaves, they probably didnt wash it.

It was a disappointing meal. Perhaps their pizza or steaks are better. But I have to say, I'm hesitant to return.
Rosa
You can't go wrong here!. This place is so delicious. You get huge portions and the food is super good. I've had their breakfast food and their lunch/supper food. It is all great. I love their fries, they are super crispy. I've had their chicken ceasar salad, chicken gyro, grilled chicken on a bun, baked pasta, chicken souvlaki skewers on rice. It is all good. Service can be slow at times and many times it takes awhile for your food to arrive but seeing as it's worth the wait then you tend not to care.

Burgers. Great homemade burgers! Hidden gem.

One of the greatest mom and pop place.. My wife and I have enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner at Garwoood, and always very pleased when leaving. The food is always delicious and plentiful at a reasonable price. We always take home leftovers. We never have to discuss leaving a tip for the service because it surpasses all expectations even when they are at there busiest time. Their pizza is a little pricy but worth every bite. We continue to dine there and always recommend it to our friends and family.
Tyunderscorerules
My favorite restaurant. I recomend the steak and eggs, the chicken breast and spaghetti, or the pizza.

I have dined there almost weekly for well over a decade. I love the Garwood Grill! My parents took me there as a kid and I have taken my, now adult children, there many, many times. Favorites for us include the Chicken Gyro (my favorite, I order it all the time), pizza (maybe the best in the city), Greek Salad, clubhouse sandwiches, breakfasts (awesomely filling and fantastic homemade hash browns).

I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Great food, not so great experiences. I've come to the garwood twice this month, love coming here to eat, never had a problem.
These last 2 times, we've been showed to our table and sat down, order taken. Everything is great so far.
Another couple or people get seated and their order gets taken by Anna and they are receiving their meals 5 minutes after ordering and before us! This has happened the last 2 times I've been to the Garwood.
I think it's rude and unfair.

It shouldn't matter who walks into your restaurant.... They can wait like everyone else for their food. No one is better than patiently waiting customers who get there and order before them!
Quit being rude to loyal patrons and giving friends special treatment! Shame shame Garwood....

What restaurant takes the whole summer off?. I just called to order take out and much to my surprise the restaurant is closed for the summer and "plans" on opening up again in the middle of September?? Someone please tell me there is more to this story?

Total Disappointment!. Went for lunch today. They were busy and I know the server was doing her best. People seated after us were able to order before us. No problem...we were in no hurry. Ordered the lunch special which was a hot turkey sandwich., a favourite of mine. Came with soup, fries and coleslaw. My son ordered a burger and fries. He seemed to enjoy his food said it was ok, fries were good. My food however, not so. The gravy on top of the sandwich was good. The entire sandwich had only dark meat which I do not like but gave it a try anyway. Had a strange flavour and was very stringy. I ate one bite from the entire plate. My son finished his food and we sat there for a while then it was like magic that the server noticed I did not eat my food. In all due fairness to her she offered to bring me another one. At this point I wasn't hungry anymore so I said no thanks. I asked if I would be charged for the entire meal, as I was perfect l y willing to pay for the soup and coffee I had. The server said I would have to speak to the "manager" when I went to pay. The "manager"is obviously a family member of the owners because she had that I couldn't care less if you liked the food or not attitude and I was expected to pay for the entire meal whether I ate it or not. I explained why I didn't eat it and her response and I remember clearly the words she used "you should not have expected the sandwich to have white meat in it" Interesting response as it seems like every other restaurant I have had a hot turkey sandwich at uses white meat. All that said I will spend my dining out money elsewhere where food quality and customer service matters because clearly here it does not.

SO SO YUM YUM. I love this place. I live down the street and I go with my sister who lives down the street from me. We love the food and the prices. Get the greek omelette you will not be disappointed. Breakfast is HUGE! lunch is BIGGER, and dinner is the BIGGEST! Wonderful service and lovely little old couples that have been going for decades. Give it a go, you shall not be disappointed .

Breakfast is Great. Great omelette with lots of fresh mushrooms and not canned as some places offer. Great back bacon, sausage and greek salads with chicken. The pizza is quite good also. if you want a huge breakfast that will stick with you for quite a few hours, try the Garwood Grill. Great staff also.

Some delicious offerings! Great value! Take a break from predictable pedestrian chain eateries!. A very busy place for many decades.
One of the best Pizzas you will ever have. I can not stress this enough!
If you prefer thin crusts as I do as well, almost all my friends and family, enjoy as the generous quality toppings and cheese accompanied by a delicious sauce make it superb.
This is not the garbage you get at the 3 for 1 Pizza chain / joints.
This has Real Cheese!
All the soups (3 selections per day) are made from scratch and delicious served in a generous sized bowl.
Pastas are good and also, large portions.
Steaks are tasty but on rare occasion, the meat is not as tender as I prefer.
The turkey is home made and tastes good.
If you like chicken fingers, well, the ones served here are like 3 medium sized schnitzels. large home made, tender, crunchy yet moist.
Just a tip...Ask for the fries well done.
The home made gravy is rich thick and savory.
Breakfasts are popular as well.
Always friendly service.
Desserts are so & so.

Breakfast at Garwood Grill. I am coming to Garwood Grill for one and one reason only, the Garwood Special breakfast. The rest of the menu looks very nice but pricey. For $7.95 (at the end $13 including coffee and tip) you get a conventional eggs/bacon/sausage/hash/toast/coffee breakfast, but a tasty one and you will have it front of you within 3-4 minutes of walking in.
Dougthompson.gc8
Very disappointing. Decided to come here for breakfast this morning.
I had the western omelette with cheese.
I was expecting shredded cheddar cheese that would have been mixed in with the omelette.
What actually came was an omelette with 4-5 slices of processed cheese laid out over the whole omelette like a blanket.
Nothing like what I was expecting, and overall a poor experience in my eyes.

Good old fashioned home cooking. Dinner tonight, party of 11. it was slow, server was super busy, but efficient. dinner was excellent. I had steak and eggs, a few people had the gyro, kabobs, ham steak. everyone left satisfied and FULL. burgers and pizza at a neighboring table looked awesome.
Debbie Steeves
The worst burger ever. Better to go to McDonalds that eat a burger there. So dry and over cooked twice. Kids cooking in the back don't care. Not worth the money and we'll never go back. Don't understand why the following.

Food is amazing, staff is really great. Awesome gyros!
Something does need to be done about that phone tho. I live close by and I can hear it sometimes from my room if I open my window believe it or not. Turn it down, Answer it, something. It's good they get tons of business tho. Doing it a lot better than other restaurants. Consistency is hard, and they have achieved it.

OMG. GREAT FOOD !...had the cheeseburger platter. Fabulous. Real good fries. Good portion. Cheese-burger was very good, great tasting paddy, fresh lettuce thick slice fresh favour-full tomato . wonderful generous portion of coleslaw . I will definitely be back.
Heard their pizza was the best, gotta try it.

Love this place! Went there for the first time this past weekend. Fast and friendly service! Favourite item? The vanilla milkshakes!

Disappointed. After reading all the great reviews on Urbanspoon, I decided to make a reservation for 5pp on Sunday evening. Arrived a little early, but was seated within a few minutes.
After a few more minutes a server came by, asked us if we would like something to drink, but we had to ask for menus to see what there was to drink. The rest of our party arrived around 6:00pm, We all had our drinks and ordered food by approx. 6:15pm.
We had ordered fries and a caesar salad to start, they came out about 20mins later, a little long for fries(frozen) and salad, but as I heard a few times from them they were busy. Seriously the whole place filled up and they only had 2 servers, no hostess, no one to answer the phone that wouldn't stop ringing, just 2 servers.
Around 7pm I had asked if our food was coming, the server said its almost ready, "sorry were busy". Finally around 7:10 the first pizza came out 7:15 the second pizza, then 7:18 my food.
Even though it took an hour the pizza's were enjoyed by who ate them, but I ordered a cheese burger with greek salad. 1 bite of the burger, COLD, BURNT, DRY BUN. Told the server to take it back, she did ask if I wanted another but at this point I was not willing to wait another hour for a burger. I just had enough.
I see that it's a popular place, so popular that its understaffed. Please consider some hiring so you can provide faster, better service.
Dont over cook the burgers, and serve them when there ready, cut your own fries it's way more cost effective, and tastier for the one eatting them, and perhaps add a cook or 2 so the food comes out faster.

PS: They tried to charge me for the salad that came with the burger, I wasnt having it. We should have had more discounts for waiting so long.

Great home cooked diner food .... This restaurant is an institution in Winnipeg as the excellent food and friendly service are second to none. We absolutely love the Greek salad and their pizzas. The salad is a generous portion with plenty of feta cheese and the pizzas are authentic with good quality toppings and REAL mozzarella cheese. Anna and her family are amazing with customer service and the servers are always outstanding. Keep up the good work and we will keep coming back!!!!

THE BEST FAMILY RESTAURANT/DINER IN WINNIPEG. The Garwood grill has been in business at this location since 1946.!
This in Winnipeg, the dining out capital city of North America.
10's of thousands of restaurants,..have come and gone in that time frame.

The current owners have been there since 1976!

The food is fabulous ! All home made from scratch, with real ingredients, like moms home cooking. The pizza is amazing...highest quality ingredients, portabella mushrooms, the best quality meats, great crust.
Try the number 17!

The lasagna is great, the gyros too.

The whole menu is delicious. The portions are large and doggy bagging a norm.:).
The prices are in the low/moderate range . It is a great bang for your buck...amazing food. I know I eat ther 3 ,sometimes four times a month.

You gotta try this place .
Its a Winnipeg icon, and you will see and taste why.

Enjoyable Experience. After several recommendations I decided to try out the Garwood Grill. Great service from a friendly waitress who gave us some awesome recommendations. I ordered the spaghetti special with the 8 oz sirloin, the spaghetti was a very generous portion, the sauce was delicious, the sirloin was cooked medium-rare and was clearly a high grade cut as it was tasty and tender. I will be going back again.

Excellent Experience!. We went to the Garwood Grill today for lunch, because we were in the area. I had only been here once before, in the '70s. But I remember it being a great place then, and it still is now. My boyfriend and I asked the very knowledgeable and enthusiastic server,Tara, what she would recommend, since it was our first time there. She said the pizzas were great, the burgers were great and the clubhouse sandwich is also really good. She explained that all portions are very generous. We agreed to share a clubhouse on rye, with fries and coleslaw.
The clubhouse is made with a generous amount of REAL turkey! It was really tasty. The coleslaw was a generous portion, enough for us to share, and is oil and vinegar style, which is my favourite! The fries were crispy and good, and there were a lot of them. They're not home-made, but were good, none the less. This place was packed! A steady stream of people kept coming and going, so obviously they are a well-loved icon in this area of the city.
I definitely recommend The Garwood Grill, and we will certainly be back to try the pizza. Tara was a great server, and knew the menu well. It was obvious that she loves her job at The Garwood Grill. Thank you, we'll be back!

First time. Saturday was my first visit, on the recommendation of my mom, who had been many years ago. I had a strip bacon and mushroom pizza. I love bacon and to have several full strips of it on every piece was heaven. The crust was on the thinner side and there was just the right amount of sauce for me. I also had the "half Greek salad". WOW! It was huge! While, not a true greek salad, it was tasty. The dressing was nice too. The rest of our six person party was very happy with their meals and the service was great. I will definitely be back.

'We wandered into a (.......) time capsule there'. That's the first thought that crept into my mind upon seeing the rotary phone at the cashier's station....what now? What comes next?
I had wanted to try Garwood Grill for some time. We had the baked spaghetti...and the portions were very large, very nice for the price. The cheese was generous, as was the sauce. But that was a problem. For myself, I don't enjoy swimming in my spaghetti. The sauce had a slightly sweet taste, and the beef was less ground and more chunky. While it was not terrible, it just did not please me. So I will not diss them, because this is all a very personal thing we have with food. In closing, it will not bring me back. It leaves me a little sad actually, having had high hopes for the Grill. But maybe you will enjoy it. Only one way to find out, eh? Sincerely yours, hunter.

Had the garwood special pizza with pepperoni, back bacon, mushrooms, green peppers but minus the onions. It was extremely tasty! Lots of cheese and toppings. Crust not too thick and delicious sauce. Nice homemade quality and taste, rather than some of the more overly processed pizza available in the city. Will definitely be back.

Great Place. Went there for a birthday and was happy with service and food was great. For place that doesnt specialize in pizza it was awsome nice thin crust highly recommend

Decent little diner. I joined a couple of colleagues for lunch at the Garwood Grill today, and was pleased with both the food as well as the service.

It was my first time here, and I had a club sandwich that was as good as any I've had......real turkey as opposed to lunch meat is always nice.

One of the other guys has the biggest omellette I've EVER seen, accompanied by roughly 5 pounds of fried potatoes....you're definitely not leaving hungry.

Been going to Garwood for 25+ years, love their "homestyle" cooking. Have never left hungry....
Intrepid Diner
Keep Up the Good Work. This place has been around for a long time and I hope it continues to produce tasty meals for a long time to come.

The set up is your typical diner. Nothing fancy. The tables are jammed a bit too close together which makes sitting at your table a bit tricky when the place is really busy. This inconvenience is pretty minor and is the worst thing I can say about this place.

The service was courteous and prompt. Each time I have been here the server makes the rounds to check on the customers. After ordering, the food is delivered fairly quickly.

The food is consistently good. The menu contains the usual burger and fries but includes a number of other items like pizza, pork chops, steaks and the like. The burgers have a good sized, juicy patty and are well seasoned. The bun is fresh and large. Onion rings are very crisp and tasty. The steak is surprisingly good. I do not expect a steak at a diner to be that high in quality. Don't get me wrong, it is not like 529, but it is tender and has a good flavour. They feature salads that are very large. The only dessert I have tried here is baklava. Not the best I have ever had, but it still qualifies as good. I have heard good things about the pizza, but have yet to try it.

Prices are quite reasonable. Steak and eggs are $15 (includes your coffee) a burger and onion rings are $8. They have a breakfast special for $7 that I would like to try.

I will keep returning to this place.

A table full of happy people here.... It was an impulse that made me decide to make NYE reservations at The Garwood Grill, well mostly impulse along with a browse of their reviews here on US. Am I ever glad we did it- It was a really great meal.

I suppose we were a bit leery when we arrived. The place was practically empty when we arrived at 7. And then it appeared that even though empty, our server appeared extremely busy with another table. We rode it out though. She was reasonably attentive over the course of the evening, although I think they could have used some help. But I digress.

Good drinks. Our group enjoyed the kitschy cocktail list- especially the Woo Woo's. That turned out to be our NYE yell for the evening. WOO WOO!

Aunt said the breaded veal dinner was great. Moist tender and topped with a tasty gravy. Comfort food.

Wife said the steak sandwich was really tender. perfect med-rare. Nice job.

Mom loved the souvlaki. We all tried and approved the tzaziki as fresh, full of cucumber and careful on the garlic. Very good.

Bro had Lasagna and meatballs. This is where it got crazy. This is an 11 out of 10 dish. Its just killer. I wish I had a picture. Spicy sauce- almost a chili flavour with lots of body. But man, was it totally bathed in hi-quality baked cheese and were those the biggest, tastiest meatballs OR WHAT? Ill be back often for this dish. Full, full marks.

And the pizza...... wowsers. Wasnt expecting to come away with a new spot in my top 5 pizza joint list . Got the 14" Garwood special with pep back bacon gr pep, mush, onions. This pizza had flavour and lots of it- great sauce, ample toppings and more of that perfect, deeply baked and darkened cheese. Crust medium thin and complimented the over all taste of the pie in a good way.

Sorry for rambling, but its been a while since I felt so strongly that others should try a place. I think we thanked them for our meal 16 times. Really good- THANKS!
Pete
BEST LUNCH EVER. I order`d the chicken pita with greek salad for lunch. The pita was HUGE!, More chicken than onions & tomatoes combined. The salad was large as well, it was tasty. The service was outstanding. I have nothing bad to say at all about this hidden gem. I recommend it to all ....way better than Pony Corral.
I am trying a breakfast omlette next visit (heard its awesome with homemade hashbrowns). I eat everywhere so i know a good place when i see it. I give this place 9 out of 10. Do NOT listen to other readers thoughts here, try it for yourself ......some people are just knit pickers.

Been a fav for over 20 years. I've never been disappointed at the Garwood, but there are only a few items that I order. Usually, it's the Chicken Greek Salad. They do a really nice job on the chicken. The burgers are thick and homemade and, in the over two decades that I've been going, I've never had to send one back for being raw or underdone. The hot beef is pot roasted and fall-apart-tender. You get choice of potato AND soup or salad.

I understand what people mean about the pasta...the sauce is not that great. However, if you do like it, you'll get a massive slab of it.
Joe Diner
Diners are great. I remember seeing the sign when we went to visit relatives on Fleet back in the early 60's and the place looked old then. Well, it is a diner and these are on the top of my list of the best places to get real food. The Garwood is about the best breakfast spot on Pembina and they make one of Winnipegs best burgers. All meals I have had have been fresh and great. The service is good but when it is busy you gotta wait, making and serving the fresh takes a bit longer when there are so many to feed.
I just wish I had ventured through the doors 30 years ago.... that would have been so many more good burgers and omelets. Oh ya - omelets, these are special along with the great hash browns. A good breakfast spot only happens with good, not deep fried, hash browns. Just say no to fried hash browns ...... breakfast is not supposed to come out of the frier.

Horrible Restaurant. First off, we had heard about this place from a few friends, some raved about it, some hated it. We thought to ourselves "what the heck, we'd try it and see for ourselves." Our impression? Best Garbage Grease Pit of Fort Rouge. Our meals came semi-warm and over cooked. 4 of us and our choices were as follows: Ground hamburger steak with fried onions, fries and coleslaw, pork chops with mashed potatoes/gravy and coleslaw, chicken greek with garlic toast, deluxe cheeseburger with fries and coleslaw. Diner #1 and their ghastly choice of a nasty burger steak which WAS well overcooked and had black hard spots on the surface of both sides-ie: burnt! The chopped onions were also burnt so obviously they were a great companion to the burnt oval meat blob. Fries were oily and since I know when fries have been re-fried/re-dipped in the vats of oil I'll tell you, these WERE cooked twice. The coleslaw was bland and appeared to be soaked in liquids for far too long. Lumpy, salty gravy topped it off for the ground steak. Diner #2 and/or second to choose another bad option on their menu: Pork Chops, dry, broiled and tasted of smoke which would appear they don't realize that pork chops have very little to offer for fat content ie: lean cuts of meat so whatever they had, was cooked out on their broiler (waitress confirmed they broil them on an old beater of a charbroiler) and the oil decided to adhere itself to the outsides of the chops. The mashed potatoes ARE instant and either Carnation or another brand-pure garbage, cheap way out of making fresh mashed potatoes and even if fresh have ever had lumps in them, at least a diner would know they are fresh/homemade and the restaurant cared. Lumpy, salty gravy, for coleslaw read above for the ground steak dinner. Diner #3 HATED their chicken greek-horrible dressing ie: oil & vinegar with a little seasoning and TOO MUCH SALT but yeah, a lot of feta cheese and hey, at least the olives had the stems still attached, just like they had when they came off the vines in Greece I'd imagine. The olives were slimy by the way. Big chunks of white onion in the greek salad and lucky diner, they got a nice piece of the onion's core so word to cook(s) you remove the core before you serve the onion chunks! Tomatoes in the greek? Laughable, odd chunks of tomato that appeared to NOT yet have ripened enough-a white-red shade of fruit.. Too big chicken chunks, burnt on some parts, greasy on others. Word to cook(s)-UNIFORM sizes of chicken and/or strips so it looks like it was cared for when prepped/cooked AND all of the chicken is cooked to the same doneness. Garlic toast with it? Laughable, the center of each side had garlic butter on it, the rest was devoid of any butter and since what it did have was oily, I guarantee it was cheap margarine and probably GARLIC SALT-BITTER garlic salt! Cold when it arrived too! The last victim and/or diner #4 had the cheeseburger platter and again, what a mistake that was! What exactly does deluxe mean anyway, was it special or something? Overcooked tasteless patty, way too big chunks of onions (should be diced finely), wilted lettuce and a soggy tomato slice. The fries and coleslaw were as above for the other poor souls who were our dinner companions. Lukewarm water to start and in questionably clean(?) glasses, can drinks with dirty tops of the cans to boot! Last note about this grease pit-our meals were "slopped onto" the plates, very poor presentation I might add. Does this place know how to place food properly and keep some of the food from spilling into the other plate companions as per menu choice ordered? Also, we wondered why there were grease rings around our plates on the tables when we slid them over a bit to relax after what we actually ate of our meals. We decided to take a look at the undersides of our plates and no kidding, oily films on all, greasy oil with some kind of spices on the undersides. I imagine that the food surfaces that were eventually hidden by our menu choices, were just as greasy. This place is a dump and other diners nearby appeared to be somewhat disappointed with their menu choices too-kinda like expecting a bike at Christmas time and seeing a large box with a picture of a bike on it and when you open it, it's a hulu hoop and a bean bag chair and you figure your parents finally gave up caring to buy you anything nice and that you could actually use. This place stinks, the decor is pathetic and if you take a chance on it, please post your review too so others may avoid it thus saving their hard-earned dollars. Other Greek restaurants offer better value and actually serve homemade and nicely cooked options, the Garwood is an embarrassment of Fort Rouge! Please note at the end of my review, we went when it wasn't really that busy so we're not sure why they couldn't have prepared our meal choices a lot better and at least give us fair value for our money. Their loss, we won't be returning unless it changes owners and serves homemade fare and actually cares about their clientele.

I love this restaurant. This isn't a fancy-shmancy restaurant, but they make great food and the service is fab. I recommend the hot chicken greek salad. It is huge, reasonably priced, and real food. The coffee is good too.

Great Place. I have been going to Garwood for about 20 years, the food is great, the staff is always amazing and the price just cant be beat

Worst Meal in Memory. I'm horrified to see this place has such a high score, continue to be suprize that it's still even open, and agree with the previous reviewer. I went with a guest and it was probably the worse restaurant meal either of us have ever had anywhere in regard to poor food quality. It was actually several years ago, but it was so especially bad we still talk about it to this day because no experience has ever topped it as the worst of the worst - we both orderef fish and chips, and I kid you not it was clearly those triangular "Captain Highliner" fish sticks (which had absorbed A LOT of frier oil like a sponge), with bland unbuttered frozen peas and carrots and frozen french fries. I could have litterally made the same meal at home, not that I would have ever, ever wanted to.

GROSS!. This is the GROSSEST restaurant I have ever been to in life! I feel very misled by its rating on here. To start off our waters had black stuff floating in them.
My boyfriend and I ordered, the lasagna, chicken slovaki, and greek salad.
Lasagna was so disgusting, tasted like tomato paste and overcooked noodles, my boyfriend who eats everything and loves it , hated it, and it got less then half eaten.
The chicken slovaki, was huge grissly chunks of nasty underseasoned chicken, with one giant piece of tomato that wasn't even cut up and onions, no lettuce, no cucmbers as promised.
The salad was just head lettuce, 3 dry chunks of tomato, no cucmbers, no olives, and a fairy dusting of feta cheese.
I have never left a restaurant so hungry,GROSSED out, and ripped off at the same time!!!

The Garwood Special with feta is probably my favorite pizza in the city. I crave it on a regular basis.

Awesome breakfast!

One of my top 3 fav's in the city.. Have to say this is one of my top 3 ever eateries in Winnipeg!
The greek salad small is ample for 2. What a bunch of you won't realize
that any medium pizza is ample for 2 as well. But let's not stop there. Choose your crust. Thick or Thin.
Go light or heavy. They are only too happy to make it the way you want.
The best rib sticking Pizza in the city. Don't know how papa john's is going to make it with these guys so close.

I have to say that the only downside is the spaghetti. Way too much.
Burgers and Sandwiches are tops.
Breakfast for one should be breakfast for two. Sals would probably make 4 breakfasts out of the one
serving of bacon you get here.
A&W would make 30 or 40 Bacon n Eggers.
The chicken pita again is enough for sharing.
Bottom line is this.
This is the best Twofer place in the city. My wife and I are getting near the senior's age and we could
easily take any meal there, add a soup, and we would be done.
It is my favorite pizza and Greek salad in town.
The Garlic toast is always light and toasted.
Anyway definately worth the try, Too bad they close for so long when they go on Holidays.

Just hit this place for lunch, the double cheeseburger is too big to fit into you mouth, the patties are too thick :) which is wonderful. The bacon is also about twice the amount that you'd get anywhere else for $1. Staff was very friendly and quite prompt. Joyfully actually and well worth a good tip, which is made easier by the VERY affordable prices on the menu. Before tip, lunch for me and the wife came to about $23 and we were completely stuffed. Excellent place.

Only downside is the burgers could have used a touch more seasoning, maybe a little more moisture in the mix. But great overall.

Fantastic food and super friendly service. The atmosphere is very comfortable and inviting and very well priced. Wonderful place to go for a quiet lunch.

Good place. Busy!. I've only been here a few times, but the food is always well prepared and tasty. The portion sizes of some of the dishes can be pretty large, so make sure you know what you're getting yourself into beforehand. The menu ranges from steak to pizza to sandwiches to spaghetti which can be a little confusing as to what the overall theme of the restaurant is.

All in all a good "family restaurant / coffee diner" type of restaurant that I'd be quick to recommend to friends.

A good feature is that there actually are some veggie-lover options on the menu despite it being more of a steak and eggs fare. The salads are huge from what I've seen as well.

While here late one night, I was surprised to see the place close to packed at 9:00 at night when normally restaurants are closing or dead quiet. Made for an enjoyable environment to meet friends in.

Haven't ate here for awhile but always enjoyed my meals here. Used to share 2 skewer chicken souvlaki with my girlfriend and pay a couple bucks extra for a large Greek salad. Often times we still had left overs to bring home.

Worst owner ever same as food. Had to send back my halibut because of the grease and the owner had the gull to say it was the moist fish. Second piece came with absolutely no moister in it at all. i took one look at it and said so, her answer was that I hadn't even tried it. When I pointed out that the fish had shrunk to half the size of the bone, the only thing she could suggest was for me to try it before I complained. My wife enjoyed her burger but was not impressed with the half head of lettuce the tried to pass off as a salad. It used to such a nice place to eat. But the service from the ownership made me feel sorry for the nice waitress we had. NEVER going there again

Unassuming Comfort Food. I've been driving past this place for ages so I thought it would finally be time to try it out.

My first impression of this restaurant was that it was clean and straightforward. The customers seemed like hard-working regulars taking some well-deserved down time.

The menu seems fairly typical of the fare I experienced growing up. Steaks, pizza, lasagna, spaghetti, chicken breast etc. Both of us has a spaghetti special, served with a meat main like pork chops or veal cutlet. It came with a big bowl (as opposed to a small cup) of soup to start, and garlic bread on the side. My friend thought the cutlet was the best he had ever had, while I thought my meal was slightly less tasty than what I could cook at home. However, if I ever want a home-cooked meal without the work, then I will be back at the Garwood Grill.

The pizza being served around us looked excellent. I will definitely have to try that next time!

Needs more Zing !!. Today I ordered a chicken pita and had my choice of either a tossed or Greek salad with it. I chose the tossed salad.
The chicken pita was large and had nice juicy chunks of grilled chicken breast inside with tomatoes, cucumber slices and tzatziki sauce. The chicken was seasoned with a little oregano from what I could tell but the whole thing lacked flavour. The tzatziki had no garlic or zip to it which was really unfortunate as all the ingredients were fresh and well prepared. The pita bread was nice and soft too.
The tossed salad was simple and again large but mainly just iceberg lettuce, with tomatoes and a couple of shreds of purple cabbage thrown in for colour. They charge an extra $6 if you have a salad which in this case was so not worth it. (it's only an extra $3 if you want fries & coleslaw ?)
Service was attentive and friendly.

The breakfast is killer. I left more bacon on my plate when I was done eating then some places give you as a serving. Fast friendly service too boot!!

Worst Lasagna in City.. This place might be a favourite for some, but I've only been once, and I won't be back. I love food, and I know how it should taste. I ordered the Lasagna at the Garwood, and it was the most horrible thing I've ever tried to eat. To start, it WAS NOT a spaghetti/meat sauce. It was pizza sauce with ground hamburger in it. I work in a pizza restaurant, I KNOW what pizza sauce tastes like. Secondly, the noodles were just dropped in however, not layered, and the whole thing had so much cheese, I had to scrape it off to see what I was eating. Not good. Now, maybe they'd run out of the "real" lasagna and tried to make one out of the crap they had lying around, but I'll NEVER go back to find out for sure. Disgusting.

The Garwood is one of the few places that actually offers real turkey in their club. Actually, this club has a strong resemblance to the classic Wagon Wheel club, which was a clubhouse for the ages. Well, now that the Wagon Wheel is six feet deep, maybe the Garwood Grill will take its place as “the home of the clubhouse.” Unfortunately, probably not, since the Garwood’s club was only O.K.– not the best, but not the worst. It had a good ratio of veggies and meat, but common Garwood, where’s the cheese!?. Also, I think if the turkey was a little bit warmer I would of left a happier man.

I am not certain how long the Garwood Grill has been on Pembina Hwy. but our Mom says that she and my Dad used to enjoy going there. My Mom has lived in her home in EK for 55 years and so it is likely that this was when she and my Dad lived on Chevier Blv
