Review Magic Thailand - Winnipeg

Kassie T
Solid green curry and pad thai and very generous portions/great price. Though the pad thai was a bit soupy for my taste. The spring rolls were pretty average.

My absolute favorite Thai restaurant in Winnipeg! Friendly staff and spot on authentic dishes packed with such delicious flavors. Moved away from Winnipeg but this place is on the list of restaurants to visit when I come. They ask your tolerance from 1-10 for spice so you can enjoy any dish regardless of tolerance. Options for meat choices or Tofu or shrimp for dishes if you are vegetarian. Good portions for the price.

Tasty, quick service and friendly staff make this an easy choice for good Thai food. We ordered two orders of Green Coconut curry soup and one order of Cashew Pad Nut w/ Beef. The soups were 5/5. Lots of flavor, good portions and just the right amount of spice. Wish it would have came with rice though. The beef cashew pad nut was okay but not that great and the beef was a bit dry. I'll definitely be returning for more soup!

Our go-to Thai restaurant. We always get the green curry soup here and it's beyond delicious. We've tries various food on the menu as well which are equally as good but we just love our green curry soup the most.

Today I tried the Massaman curry and loved it! A couple weeks ago I tried the green curry and loved it! Service is incredibly quick and it takes less than five minutes from ordering to receiving your food (If you're ordering a single curry and rice). The taste is absolutely addicting, and afterwards I feel a bit ill. Not sure if that's because I've overstuffed myself or if the curry is a bit imbalanced. I do feel the curries should have more of an uplifting kick to them, which is what I was hoping the basil would do. Still, this is one of THE BEST Thai restaurants in the city. If you're on the fence, jump over and try these affordable, delicious dishes. Just make sure to order some rice with your curry! It doesn't come with it. Spice scale is 1-10. I really like spicy food and 7-8 makes me sweat and my nose leak without making the food unenjoyable. YMMV.

One of the best Thai spots in Winnipeg, with that good ol' hole in the wall feel. Great prices. Great food. I'm a big of a curry soup with rice and an appetizer for two.

After hearing good things about this restaurant through my coworkers, my boyfriend and I decided to come here for dinner. We ordered masaman curry, pad thai and the red curry with fish. Masaman curry was good and the pad thai wasn't the greatest. I've had better pad thai at different Thai restaurants and even Thai Express. The red curry fish on the other hand was terrible. The dish looked great but taste wise, it was not. After a few bites of the fish, we discovered that it was uncooked in the center. The waitress took our dish back but a few moments after walking into the kitchen, we heard the microwave go on and off, twice. Shortly after the second "ding", our dish came back "cooked", but the entire dish had an unpleasant overcooked fish taste and smell. It wash hard to continue eating anything, so we paid for our meal and left. Although its an assumption that the fish was re-cooked in the microwave, the timing, taste, the smell and being one of the only two groups in at the restaurant, it seems likely that's how it was "cooked". I'm not sure if we may have just came late or it was an off day, but after our experience, we will not be returning.

A true hidden gem in Winnipeg. I've never had something at magic Thailand that I didn't like. Just had their beef pad thai and spring rolls. Both were excellent.

I am looking forward to going here, but just a head's up, they open at 5 on Saturdays. They are not open for lunch as indicated above. (Not sure about the hours for other days.)

Total redemption!

BUT, the bad= My 1st visit, ordered pickup of rice, panang, green curry soup. I paid for an extra soup I didn’t like or had ordered but didn’t know till home. The rice was the best part about the whole meal. The chicken was gummy in every dish, and the soup was just ok.

2nd visit = soo much better! Based on the reviews I had to try it one more time. I ordered red curry soup which is now my favourite here. I also ordered mee krop chicken which was very good. Only thing was the sauce/stock would have been nicer to have a thickening agent in it, but the flavour of it was very good which made if for it.

I’m glad I went back for another try! Will go back for more in person next time

My favourite place for Thai in Winnipeg. Everything on the menu is great, I have never gone wrong.
Best picks
Mango Salad
Massaman eggplant curry with beef or tofu
Fresh Thai rolls
Coconut rice
The crunchy noodles
I came here based solely on the rating it had on Zomato. The restaurant is outside of the downtown area in a industrial part of town it lacks it own parking but don't let that stop from coming here. The restaurant is has modern Thai inspired decor that's clean with a friendly staff. I only order the green chicken curry with steam rice as I was only there for lunch by myself. It was fresh, flavourful and as authentic as I would expect to get in Winnipeg. I could see a the other dishes that went to other tables looks just as good. I will for be return here for sure when I travel to Winnipeg again.

I went to magic Thailand for a pickup order . I had the red coconut curry soup. I found the chicken to be over cooked and taste rubbery. I liked the chicken skewers and peanut sauce a lot! Highly suggest the skewers.

Everyone talks about Magic Thai! I had decided to witness it myself yesterday.

Don’t let the outside of the building fool ya. The inside was nice, it felt clean and refreshing. The restaurant itself is not huge and it does not take reservations so I do not recommend going there for a group greater than 6.

I ordered rice rolls with shrimp and green curry with beef for lunch. The rice rolls were quite similar to the summer rolls at Vietnamese restaurants, however, they used a different sauce in place of the hoisin sauce. They were alright. I probably wouldn’t get that again. On the other hand, the green curry dish was delicious! I had it with a 2 on a spice level (out of 10) and it was the perfect amount. One thing I am surprised though is that the curry dish did not come with rice as it was at an extra cost so keep that in mind if you want rice with your curry!

Overall, the service is alright. However, they do have great food. I would definitely come back again!

My favourite place for takeout, excellent Thai food , I've never had a dish I didn't like , red curry coconut soup, massaman curry, Panang curry, green curry udon noodles, eggplant curry, papaya salad, my girls love pad Thai , food is prepared within 15min !!!!

I've been here a couple times before and every time I'm always satisfied with my meal. This is one place I sometimes forget about, but think it's one of the hidden gems around the city. First off, the spice scale here is definitely spicier than the other Thai place around the city. This place goes from 1 - 10 and getting a 4 here felt like a 6 at other places, so just be cautious of that. The crab ragoon is very good here, so I for sure recommend trying this dish as a starter. The curried eggplant was good, I didn't get that strong eggplant taste that I usually get when other places make this similar dish which was nice. I forget what the noodle dish was called, but it was also good. Had a nice sweetness to it, not overwhelming at all it helped balance it all out. The shrimp fried rice was also pretty good, nice flavours and big shrimp. Ended this meal off with the fried banana with ice cream for dessert, and I wasn't too crazy about this dish here. But overall I really like this place because the food is flavourful and tasty. Worth trying for sure.

Best Mee Krop (crunchy noodles with vegetables) in the city! And their crab rangoon and spring rolls are amazing! Some people are bothered by it's location in the city but I gladly risk my life at least a couple times a month for this food! Be warned: I like mild spice and I can't handle more than a 2/10. The spice is the real deal so be careful!
Squishy
Best Thai food in Winnipeg and cozy atmosphere too. Crab Rangoon, red or green curry, coconut rice and lettuce wraps yum. Cannot go wrong! Always busy filled with people who know what good food is.
KPid
I dined here Friday night for the first time. My friends suggested it as it is their fave - and I can see why. The restaurant was busy, and the service was attentive. The spring rolls were delicious, especially with the peanut dipping sauce. My Pad Thai was good, but the Panang Curry with chicken was outstanding. Absolutely perfect with the right amount of spice. The location is not the most convenient for me, but I will try to make it here again soon! Loved it!
Ukhu
First time going last night and I love the green curry coconut soup. Really creamy and flavorful with just the right amount of spice at 5/10 if you like spicy foods.
Inga
It was our first time in this restaurant so I asked the waitress what was the most popular dish. She said "Lemongrass", so I ordered lemongrass stir fry with tofu. And... I didn't like it at all... I had the impression as if I was eating soap or a lemongrass candle... I'd never used lemongrass for cooking before, so for me, the experience was awful... Another thing I didn't like was the veggies weren't really fully cooked. They were still crunchy and I don't like it at all - I like veggies to be soft and well cooked. I would have also liked more noodles and less sauce... My husband ordered Crunchy noodle with shrimp and said he liked it. His veggies were cooked the same way as mine, but obviously, he didn't have any problem with that.

It's all about the Green Curry Coconut Soup. Delicious!! Had a few other dishes, they were alright. Avoid the Pat Thai. Ordered it twice, threw out half of it as it wasn't edible. Love the appetizers. Crab Rangoon and the Wrapped Shrimp. Not sure why they give you 7 instead of an even number. Likely they're laughing about people fighting over the last one. 😂
Paul Thorleifson
Would recommend the three mushroom dish to a friend, go easy on the 1-10 spice scale (my 5 had me leaking heavily) and top notch service to boot
Dallian Sephton
Always clean inside with a great atmosphere. Service is always friendly. Order is always correct and timely. My favourite dish is the Red Curry soup with chicken. Probably my favourite meal ever.
Christine Heuring
The food here is phenomenal! The service wasn't amazing, but there only seemed to be 2 people working and it was really busy, so they were doing the best they could, and we eventually did get everything we wanted. The spring rolls were amazing!!
Melody
My boyfriend brought me here last night after talking it up for months. We ordered the crab Rangoon, the lettuce wraps and the green udon curry. All the food was really delicious. I love how they gave all fresh ingredients with the lettuce wraps, and the sauce was really flavourful. I really enjoyed the crab Rangoon. Nice crispy wontons with a light crab and cheese filling. And the curry was really tasty too. We got a level 4, so it wasn't too spicy but a nice level of heat. Will be returning to try more for sure!

I lived in Thailand for a year and this is the only Thai place I've been to so far that has food that actually tastes close to authentic Thai food. I'd like to see more on the menu, but what they have is excellent. Service is incredibly fast and the food is wonderful. It looks a little sketchy on the outside, but that changes when you get inside. Definitely recommend.
BonVivant
The service isn't great and it's a very casual place in not a great location, but the food... wow!! Probably the best Thai food in the city. By now, I've tried almost everything on the menu, and I have always gotten excited and have never been disappointed!! And for thai food this good, you can't beat the prices. Definitely worth going back again and again.
Update: Went back a month ago. Service picked up the pace! Only issue was once I finished my water in the first 5 min, they never refilled unless I could catch them. Eventually they brought a jug over. Lol Food was still fabulous!

[POSITIVE] Great place, great food. Friendly staff and fast service. Was really impressed with the crunchy noodle dish and their green curry. But, the best dish was the Matsaman. We ordered it with chicken and were COMPLETELY blown away. Absolutely amazing dish. Will for sure be heading back, (and will likely order two Matsaman /chicken dishes, Mmmm good). Super happy to have found this place. 👍

Love love love this place! Really authentic taste and everything is awesome. My fav chicken pad thai is from here and their crab rangoon is money$$ I highly recommend this place. Its a hole in the wall on a really crappy end of logan but its worth the trip.

Went here with my brother for a meal last week . The staff were very friendly and helpful with questions we had about the menu . We got our piping hot meals in record time , and didn't break the bank . I will be back

Best Thai food I've ever had, green curry was amazing, spice was perfect! The service was very friendly and our server was very helpful. Very highly recommended!

Very good Thai food! Less crowded than Sukhothai on Osborne and saw less pretentious people. Service was also very quick! Will definitely be back :)

I came here today and was very happy with everything. It's kind of difficult to notice from outside, but it's really a hidden gem. The atmosphere was nice and food was great, staff was friendly, and food was yummy. I got their green curry, two Thai pat, and deep-fried cream cheese crab. Portion was great, price was good. Everything was delicious! But I mostly like how clean the restaurant is.

Green Curry Soup with Shrimp. Very delicious!!
J Eric Pasquini
Went here for dinner Tuesday night. I was surprised how busy the place got. The building is cared for quite well in comparison to its neighbours and neighbourhood. the food was quick, hot and delicious.

Our appetizer was the spring rolls and Thai peanut sauce. For entree, we had the chicken fried rice which was flavourful without being greasy and the shrimp pad thai. We ordered "not hot", which was a mistake on our part. While flavourful, we should have had the hot as it was too plain.

The only detriments were the hands off service and the neighbourhood.

Hidden gem
I have been here a few times with friends, and very pleased. I've even ordered take out. Friendly staff fast service reasonable prices. Location throws it off but that's OK for what you get. This restaurant is a hidden gem.

One of the best Thai restaurant in Winnipeg. I ordered for the lemon grass chicken stir fry and was delicious. Friendly staff and owner. I gathered the owner of this place is the previous owner of Sabai Thai eatery in Corydon which is also authentic Thai food place. Highly recommended.
Magsun
Best Thai food, every item is perfect. The spice levels awesome. If you like heat you can really go for it. Friendly staff. Very authentic highly recommend this place

Best Thai EVER! Their Green Curry Soup is literally to die for. I tried to find a place in Toronto that could come close to their food without any success. Mee Krop is really good especially if you like spiciness and crunchy noodles. Who am I kidding, the whole menu is great!
Thisgirllovesfood204
Best Thai restaurant in winnipeg. My fave green curry soup with chicken. Rates 0-10 spicy scale. Reasonable prices and good quick service. Would highly recommend!

Really?. I've been trying some Thai restaurants in Winnipeg. However, after reading the review from "boostermike" I would not even consider going to this place. Nuff said.

Have been here a few times and it's always been really good. Went last week and it was so disappointing. Ordered deep friend bananas for dessert, server confirmed...but what I got was deep fried plantains...ick. Horrible way to end a mediocre meal.
Spencer901
Best Thai food in Winnipeg. I absolutely love this place, the Green Curry soup and Red Curry soups are outstanding.
Pad thai are also superb. We work with a few Vendors from the US and they have Magic Thai on their best restaurant list when their staff visits Winnipeg.
Jvraflores
Good food. Food is delicious. Service is great. Definitely coming back.

One of the best Thai places in Winnipeg. If you like Thai food or are looking for a great introduction to it, make sure you head to Magic Thailand. It's definitely an unassuming little place in a less than desirable area, but the food is so good. I've tried the pad Thai, red coconut curry and green coconut curry, and they've all been amazing. And the crab rangoons alone are worth the trip. The spice-index can be a little different depending on the day, though... I've ordered a "4" that barely had any heat and also a "4" that practically melted my face off.
Emma
Hi my husband and I, we're looking for a place to have Thai food, and thought we would try this place, was kind if sceptic on the area but glad we went. We had the Mastaman, that's with chicken, potatoes, red pepper, onions, peanuts in a nice sauce, went great with the rice, I got a 7 on heat level, wow I love spice but it was really spicy..also the Pat Thai, was nice too, and the Rice rolls, there were 4 big rolls with a nice sauce to dip in...it all came up too $36 Dollars.. Good price since you can here them cooking each meat fresh..
Foodie
Favorite curry place. They can adjust spice level to your liking, takes a bit long for the food to come out at lunch time, but worth the wait!
Caitlin Clearwater
Second Best Thai in the City. Check it out- you won't be disappointed. Looks like a dive from the outside, but don't be fooled. The food and staff are amazing.

Hidden Jewel on Logan. Many years ago I had gotten a job close-by to Magic Thailand and that was the only reason I found out it was there. This little hole-in-the-wall is very easy to drive right past without noticing, but what a find. During the years I worked close, I realistically got take-out for lunch from here at least 500 times. Now that I work farther away, I still make the drive to pick up take-out when I can.

There is a consistency of food quality that I can personally attest to. Although almost everything on the menu is good, the soups have always really stood out for me; the red curry and hot and sour in particular. They contain a heap of vegetables along with your choice of beef, chicken, tofu or shrimp. A small size take-out soup is a meal on its own for a person, and the large size is an absolute tank. If you can manage to find the room, a really nice accompaniment to any of the soups are the crab rangoon or spring rolls.

The one menu item I cannot recommend is the seafood stir fry. I tried it more than once because I wanted to give it a chance but it just doesn't fly. Like I said, this place is consistent, and the mussels consistently come out like rubber. I don't mean chewy - I mean they should have Goodyear stamped on them.

Other than that one item, the menu is pretty solid.

Recommended.

Our first!. It was our first adventure into Thai cuisine. Striding out into the unknown, we randomly picked this resauraunt. Upon arrival, we were a little put off by the exterior of the building, but upon entering, amazed. Very nice!
The service was pleasant, but the food....why did we wait so long?! It was fantastic! Cannot wait to try again! Prices weren't too bad either!

Not bad.. Walked in on a Friday night around 7. Was definitely busy, but we were not even acknowledged by any servers for about 20 minutes even though they walked by us multiple times and we tried to get their attention (they purposely averted their eyes/turned away). Did get our food (an appetizer, coconut soup, and pad thai) fairly quickly, although we asked for rice and never got any (and gave up trying to flag down the server). I was also quite disappointed at the portion sizes (very small for 2 people to share). The food was good, but not sure it was worth the wait/price.
FoodISLife
Food is great, but we found service was a little rude, Male owner? didn't really smile and made us feel uncomfortable. There was a little boy (owners son?) who constantly interrupted our dinner wanting to play with our little ones at the table. I would do take out but wouldn't dine in.

Food was amazing!! Favorited Thai food in Winnipeg.

Can't say enough good things about the food here. Always delicious. Can get a little crowded at times, but that's the price you pay. Favorited Thai food in the city!

Favourite Thai in the City. We have gone to Magic Thai for the last 3 Valentine's day dinners. Granted, the last dinner was takeout so we could enjoy our binge of House of Cards, but I still wanted my Magic Thai! My husband introduced me to this place when we first started dating and I had a craving for Thai. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere, but well worth the drive. The place has undergone some renos over the past few years, and it is much more aesthetically pleasing inside now, but the food remains just as good as it was before all the fresh paint! The green curry soup is my favourite (finished off a large soup all myself - over two days), and I have tried the Matsaman, the green udon, and the mango salad. This time I tried the pat thai. All have been very good, but I have a soft spot for their green curry, so the green udon is still probably my favourite. Well priced, and I don't think we've ever waited for a table (they seem to have a very strong takeout clientele from what I've seen when we eat in - there is a constant stream of people picking up dinner).
R.K.
Tasty!. The dishes we ordered reminded me greatly of when I lived in Thailand and would eat on the street with the locals. The pad thai is extremely tasty with tons of flavours. Their soups such as the tom kah gai and tom yum are very delicious, packed with veggies. Our favourite was the eggplant curry which is one of the best Thai dishes I've had yet. I highly recommend this place!

Wonderfully tasty food. My wife introduced me to this gem a few years ago. Staff are always great and the food is great. We have taken all of our friends to this restaurant and they were equally impressed. I have the spice level of 6 out of 10 which is hot for me but I enjoy heat. If my nose isn't running then it's not hot enough. My wife has the 3 out of 10 and that suits her well. The food is very flavourful and you decide how hot you like it. Not the best area but the food makes up for the location. It's Thailicious.
Stonewhat
Amazing!. Both the food and the service are amazing. They are very good with food allergies, as they offer both vegan, and gluten free options. And you get a lot of food for the price, I brought home leftovers. One of my top ten restaurants in the city
T.Ly
Small portion sizes. I went to Magic Thailand for lunch and ordered the matsaman curry with chicken (#40) and the pad siew (#45). The food came out very quickly. I was disappointed about the smaller portion sizes and that dishes, like the curries and stir fries, don't automatically come with rice, but are extra. The matsaman curry had a nice coconut, spiced sauce, and at level 8 (out of 10) was not too hot. It was a good dish. Unfortunately, the pad siew, which is rice noodle dish similar to a ho fan in Chinese cooking, was lacking in noodles. The few noodles that were in the dish were all stuck together. The soy sauce coating on the vegetables and noodles was too thick and salty that it was not very enjoyable. This was my second time at the restaurant and the first visit 2 years earlier was much more pleasant than this most recent visit.
HPsauce
Great Takeout!. We really enjoy the food whenever we order from here. Haven't stayed, so can't comment on service or restaurant atmosphere; however, we can recommend the take-out! Matsaman Curry (pretty much any curry) is our staple (although some days it is the most amazing thing you've ever eaten, and others it is only pretty good). We would still eat it ever day! Spice level of 4 suits us -- a little bite, but not overpowering.
Chris
Fantastic!. I hate to use the cliche, but this truly is a hidden gem. The storefront doesn't look great and I'm told neighborhood is intimidating to some (though I used to work in the area and never felt unsafe during daylight hours, so don't be scared!), but the food is worth it.

My usual set of dishes is pad thai with tofu, green curry vegetable, vegetable rice rolls, and the green curry soup. I've had the pad thai and green curry with various meats when not sharing with vegetarians, and the dishes are great either way.

The pad thai tofu used to come as quite-firm triangles, but they've moved to a softer tofu with a rectangular cut. This detracts from the dish a little, but probably only for those who remember the original.

If you can, sit near the fish tank for some meal-time entertainment. The service can be very hit or miss (even with the same staff!), but thankfully more hit than miss.

If you're feeling adventurous after your meal, walk up Tecumseh to Henry then east a bit and up along the rail yard. There's plenty of great rail-era buildings to see.
Kim J
Don't be scared people! I know it's kind of in a sketchy area and may look like a dive from the outside, but trust me you won't regret it! Cheap, delicious Thai food, doesn't get any better!
TD
So delicious. This place was awesome and I can't wait to go back. Ordered the fresh spring rolls (with chicken) which were really good. Also got the potato and chicken curry which was incredible with the jasmine rice. However, I was really disappointed in the pad thai. I'm a huge fan of it normally but I had a bite or two of this one and just did not like it. The nice thing about this place is that you can choose how spicy you want your food on a scale of 1-10. We went for a 7 which was VERY spicy, and I love spice so that's saying a lot. We joked that next time we'd scale down to a 6 but by the time we were finishing our meal (which seemed to get spicier and spicier with each bite, haha) we said we'd for sure go down to a 5 for the next time. I really want to try the coconut curry soup the next time I go.
Group Eats
Taste so go0o0o0o0od!. Been here many times and they never disappoint us. We usually come in a group of 6-8 and we've only had trouble once with seating. However, it was due to a full house because the food is just too "go0o0o0o0od!" The crab rangoons and green curry soup are a must have app. For dinner we would recommend the mee krop because of it's large portion. We also had the matsaman and panang curry which were both so "go0o0o0o0od!" They both have a creamy texture and the spice wasn't too hot because you get a choice of spice range from 1-10. If you want to try something different, go for the peanut sauce baby bok choi or the stuffed chicken wings. Service could be a bit better and the area is... "ghetto?" But it's worth the trip. ENJOY! (9/10)

Red coconut curry was tasty and everything came out really quick. Pad Thai wasn't very flavorful and was too salty. Good portion size

Red Coconut Curry Soup. Fantastic soup! And the best take out deal in town. A large order, with lots of rice in a separate container, and meat, for eleven dollars and change. yields about 4 generous bowls fo yummy soup.

Excellent Thai food. Went to this restaurant today, as I just moved to the city and have been looking for a good Thai restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised. I had the Red coconut curry with rice. I asked for medium spiciness. It was made to perfection. Excellent flavour, just the right amount of spice, with nice fresh vegetables. I got their iced coffee as well, which was absolutely delicious. Waiter was very friendly. Will be going back for sure!

No Fresh Water for YOU!. Normally we love Magic Thailand and have been there MANY times. The last time we were there it was very busy and it took quite a while to get served. We were given a pitcher of water with our meal and it tasted awful... like bad freezer burn. We politely let the server know that there was a problem, but she just looked at us. I thought perhaps she didn't understand so I tried to speak more plainly: "The water tastes terrible." She said that the water was fresh and walked away. I really wasn't into having a nice spicy meal without water, so eventually I just went and dumped our pitcher out in the sink behind the front desk and got us some new water. Much better. The experience, however, was a real turn off - I mean, really, what would it cost them to give us a fresh pitcher of water? I can tell you what not giving it may cost: two regular customers.
Jonny
MY FAVORITE. The best coconut curry soup in the city! This with an order of Mee Krop and veggie rice rolls and you got a good thing going on!

I've been coming here for years and have NEVER left hungry or disappointed...EVER!! Constant goodness at a great price point!

Thank you!
MATT E. SUN
I've lived in Thailand and this is the closest to authentic pad Thai I've had. Their other dishes are amazing- love the massaman curry and they have an array of tasty appetizers. Dine in experience is also nice- staff are friendly. Highly recommend!

Great food. Great services. Magical. It's like opening the wardrobe and finding Narnia. Don't let the creepy surroundings deter you from awesome Thai food. Definite go-to Thai food place if you're in Winnipeg
Steve
Booooooooooooooom. My favourite place in winnipeg now. Sorry sabai.
Cary Bilcowski
Has gone downhill. I've gone to Magic Thailand a number of times over the years and have always enjoyed their reasonably authentic food and the prices they charge. However my most recent experience was a little disappointing, the pad thai was not at all what i've come to expect, it was more along the lines of noodles with soy sauce and sriratcha and peanuts. The "thai iced coffees" were clearly instant coffee and were sweetened with sugar instead of condensed milk. The staff was short with us and seemed to not want to be there. Too bad, I used to really like them.
Leanne
Fantastic Food!. I went to Magic Thailand for the first time and loved it! The restaurant is in a bit of a sketchy area, but the food is worth the trip! A group of 6 friends went and we all loved the dish we ordered. My husband and I both tried the Red and the Green Curry (Pat Phet). Both were amazing.. although we both slighly preferred the green. I would defiantely suggest this restaurant to anyone looking for great thai food!

YUM!!!
DineoutGal
Yummy food - don't let the area deter you. Yum, yum, yum! Don't let the location and the exterior fool you - the inside is packed with diners and the food is great!

I've been looking for another Thai place to go to since Vanxai's on St. Mary's has been disappointing me in the last few visits. I haven't been back to Magic Thailand in years because the location isn't the most convenient. It is located in an industrial area and the exterior is not much to be desired but inside, the restaurant has been recently renovated. Nothing amazing, but it's warm, bright and inviting with lots of tables inside to seat couples to large groups.

As with most Thai places you can order your food from a heat scale from 1-10. I have a high heat tolerance for spicy foods so here a 5 is true mid-range for someone who eats spicy food. I tried everything at a 5 as the other people eating with me didn't eat that spicy. Personally, I would order about a 7 for a real nice kick. For others who don't eat spicy, I would suggest a 2 or 3.

The Thai Chicken Skewers ($8.50 for 3) and it comes with a spicy peanut sauce. Not my fave appy as it's just grilled chicken breast that didn't have much flavour on it's own so you have to rely on the peanut sauce which was very yum. For this price, I wouldn't order it again as I'd rather get another entree dish to share instead.

I really liked their "pad thai" with shrimp which was $10.50 and it comes with a side of bean sprouts. At a level 5, the spiciness definitely came through so I'd keep this as a 5. Great flavour in the pad thai mix.

The green coconut curry stir fry with chicken ($9.50) had lots of vegetables in the creamy coconut sauce. Not the best green curry I've had but it was good. At a level 5 spice, it was okay, I'd definitely up it to a 7 or 8 as the heat gets a bit lost in the sauce.

The Matsaman - potato, onions, red peppers, basil, peanuts with chicken ($10.50) is a great dish if you like more peanut flavour and heartiness of potatoes.

Food service is fast but table side service is okay as you kind of have to flag down people to get more things.

Overall, great place for Thai food!

You Would Never Know... You would never know by looking at it but this place is great!! I like to try a new place every week, but I went here two weeks in a row! I suggest their mussels if you're into seafood. I have never had mussels like theirs before, they are super spicy. If you have a cold... these will for sure help clear that up!

Love this place! Service I fantastic, I often order ahead a pick up if in a hurry but also go for lunch when hubby is off work, all the appetizers are fantastic. The cashew stir fry and pad Thai are my fav, and constantly perfect, the curry is my hubby's fav and it never gets old. The price isn't high but not cheep either, must try the crab appetizer!

The food is great, the service is relatively quick considering there is usually only one or two waiters/waitresses,it is extremely reasonably priced, and the restaurant has been newly renovated. I absolutely LOVE this restaurant.

First visit. Very friendly staff, but not very good service. Had the red coconut curry spice level 9, mee krop spice level 6. Both were so delicious we cleaned the plates (we always have left overs) The shrimp in the curry were perfectly cooked with tails on, but they were so well cleaned they just slipped off without effort. I will definitely be back soon.

Pretty good - not great. Had some take out last week from this place as the area is pretty sketchy.

Stuffed chicken wings are really good - I would go back for these.

The matsaman was good but comparable to most other places. The pad thai was also decent but nothing special.

I'd go back but probably on a once in a blue moon frequency.

Terrible. We sat and waited to be served tonight for at least 10 minutes. A group came in after us and was served before us. Finally went up to ASK for menus. Then waited. We watched as they served the other table. You would think they would of came right over after and taken care of us- a glass of water maybe? No, instead they served the table that had just come in. We walked out. It felt like racial discrimination tonight as they didn't seem to care about us and were all over the other table. Never come back.

Great fresh and tasty food here. Try the spicy coconut red curry soup. Amazing!!!!

Went once, will go again.. Enjoyed everything we ordered. Pretty good price. Green curry was very tasty but the glutton in me wishes there was a but more meat in the dish.

Definitely not the prettiest resturant and area to have this resturant located! But the food makes up for that lack! Food was amazing, had no complaints, but seeing it from the outside for the first time I was afraid to go in. Lol I would like to see it in a more clean safe area.

Sorry Magic Thai. I love Magic Thai and have been going there for years and have turned many people onto this place, but after reading Mike's review I cannot in good faith continue to eat here. Customer service is a must and this really turned me off. Unless Mike writes a review letting everyone know the owner has rectified the situation, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Very Disapointed After 12 Years. My name Mike and I've been a Happy Customer of this restaurant for approx. 12 years until now. I've NEVER complained about the food here EVER, never had to. My first complaint was today May 22/12. I was on my way home from work and stopped by and placed an order togo of 4 menu items #4, #6, #8(my favorite) & 2orders of #26 $53.20. On the way home the aroma was not there, normally by the time I get home I'm so hungry just from the aroma. so I got home and started to dish the food out and my friends they started to eat and they said there was no flavor to it, it was bland to so I tried it and they were right. I called the restaurant right away to complain about the food (first time ever). I spoke with the Owner and told her that there wae no flavor to the food that it was bland and she had asked me to bring the food back for her to try it for herself. I said no problem. I drove back with the food. She said that there was nothing wrong with the food except #8 was missing alittle something and that this was the first time anybody has ever complained. Then she asked what I would like her to do about the food? And I responed that I would like my food redone, thats all. She (the owner) then turned around and said to me that she will give me my money back and told me NEVER to come back to her restaurant, I said to her that this is the way you treat a customer of approx. 12 YEARS that has NEVER complained about the food before. She gave me my money back and then asked me to LEAVE and NEVER come back. I then said to her that will NOT be back because of the way she (the owner) treated me after my ONE and ONLY COMPLAINT in 12 YEARS !!!

70%. We finally made it to Magic Thailand after hearing a lot of good reviews. The restaurant was crazy busy and seemed disorganized in that the servers were carrying out only one plate at a time and one server was wearing open toe sandals which is not sanctioned by the health board. We ordered the Pad Thai and the Seafood Stir Fry. The stir fry could have done with more shrimp and mussels than calamari but tasted quite spicy on a 5. The Pad Thai was good but the restaurant uses the vermicilli noodles and the dish could have used more shrimp.

One of the servers did by accident put down a dish on our table that looked like green curry soup and it looked delicous! Unfornately, the server was also too busy to tell what it was. As for the shrimp; what it up with leaving on the tails!

I would give our visit a 7 out 10 and I maybe back for green curry soup ( or whatever it was)

As Authentic as You Can Get...In Winnipeg. This is the most authentic thai food you can get in wpg. I like it. 8/10

Love love love!. So I'm a huge sucker when it comes to Thai food. Everything about it is absolutely delicious! The first time I tried Magic Thailand was about a year ago and I tried a noddle/vegetable dish - I'm pretty sure it was Pad Thai. It was really good and couldn't wait to try more. Now after been going for a while now, my favourite dish is the Red Curry Soup - w/ vegetables and tofu. YUM!! I get it really spicy 8 or 9. Adding rice into the soup makes for a perfect meal! Sometimes I order the salad rolls with shrimp and they are really fresh and come with a great dipping sauce. I suggest everyone to try out Magic Thailand - and like all the other reviews say - don't be turned off by the location/look of the place. Once you try you'll be hooked for life !

Best in Wpg. Quite possibly the best Thai food you'll find in Winnipeg. Don't let the location or decor fool you; the food will speak for the restaurant. Great prices, and not a single thing on the menu will disappoint. The curry soup is outstanding, a must try!

Decor sucks, but good food

Saturday Hours. Magic Thailand opens at 5pm on Saturdays, they are not open for lunch!

Skeptical....But... As I pulled up to the restaurant, I was definately hesitant about going in... but most, dive looking spots turn out to be ok, so why not.. The decor is outdated, but who cares, the staff is super friendly, and looks to be a family run business with the family all being the staff. The food, is AMAZING. We had a pat Thai, at about 5 spiciness (superb) and the mushroom curry..cannot recall its name..and rice rolls, all so delicious! I rate this place a ten ten ten! For value, service, and deliciousness.

Not the fanciest place but WOW there is not a single thing here I haven't liked and I've gone often enough to try everything. Everything is delicious and the family that works here is very sweet. We are happy to drive 30 to 45 minutes to get here and we always order extra to take home as its such a treat. The green curry soup is my new favorite comfort food. I can't recommend this place highly enough!

Love Thai Food. One of the best Thai restaurants in the city. Great tasting food in a short period of time. Always popular though, so avoid peak dining times, as the wait can be extremely long!

Look for the Lexus parked out front.... Don't let the neighbourhood dissuade you from trying this little gem. We were skeptical, my wife joking "don't leave anything valuable in sight [in the car]." We parked up the street from the restaurant, and immediately found a BMW and a Lexus closer to the door. Seems like some odd vehicles for that area...

The restaurant is fairly small inside, maybe seating for 40-60 people. For what the restaurant lacked in atmosphere and decor it makes up for in awesome food quality.

Having lived in BC for a few years, I would easily equate this in food quality to Sala Thai on Cambie in Vancouver.

We ordered Spring Rolls, Pad Thai (w/ tofu), Panang (w/ chicken), and Jasmine Rice. I had a Singha (lager) beer. We (mistakenly?) ordered our food at a 'spicy rating' of 4/10. This turned out to be a lot hotter than we expected (maybe a 2 or a 3 would have been sufficient - and we both like spicy food!). The Spring Rolls came with a peanut-cream-sauce which was excellent. The Pad Thai was flavourful and delicious, though the tofu was a little too soft. The Panang Curry was by far our favourite, it was to die for.

I think this restaurant could use a facelift, but, don't let that turn you away. The food is awesome. Do take out if you're worried about leaving Jeeves out in the Rolls.

I'd prefer Siam but will try again... Having heard such rave reviews about Magic Thailand I have to say that it really fell short. I'm not sure if the people I heard from have just never had other Thai food but I found Magic Thailand to be lacking in both flavour and texture.

A friend and I like to head to a new Thai restaurant whenever we get together and Magic Thai was next on our list. I like to try the Masuman (or however the restaurant du jour spells it) curry at each restaurant so I can better compare them and no one has yet beaten Siam Thai in flavour or texture. The flavours were ok, not great and the meat felt very tough like it'd been forgotten and way overcooked. The rice, however, was a great texture, held it's moisture well and just sticky enough. We also shared the rice rolls and I found them very lacking in flavour and though they should have had more carrots in them so at least they'd have a crunch to them. The sauce was ok but nothing to rave about. My friend's dish looked nice enough but was apparently average in taste. I will say that the portions were bigger than most Thai places and I did get more meat even if I didn't like it much so the value vs. portions were good but value vs. enjoyability, not as much. It may have been that they were just having an off day as it was Monday night and there were few tables filled in the restaurant but I'd still hope for better even in such a case.

The best part about the meal, for me, was the coffee flavoured hard candies they gave us with the bill. Since my dad loves this place, I will probably go back once more with him to try another dish but won't be going back on my own.

Pretty good - good price. I really didn't like the pad thai. The red curry soup is good (with some rice added). The stir fries are good.

Excellent Thai food always fresh and well priced.. We like the spring rolls, rice rolls, shrimp rolls, pad thai and all the soups!!
Happybelly
Greattt food!. Maybe not exactly original Thai flavors and dishes, but the food is great! And good prices too. There are washrooms downstairs, clean but very cold. Somehow their thermostat is always set a little too cold, no matter in the summer or winter. Love their crab rangoon, stuffed chicken wings, green papaya salad, green cury udon, panang curry.... Yumm almost everyth is good! But for pad thai i still like Siam Thai better, which has gotten more expensive without increasing quality lately. Magic thai is the way to go for thai food in the city, that is if you dont mindthe location, otherwise i would suggest bangkok thai

The food here is simply good and amazing! You will not be disappointed! I usually get the salad rolls with shrimp and a red curry dish. They are excellent with the right amount of spices. The restaurant is big enough that you can sit back and relax!
Lovetoeat
Good value. Food is good and so are the prices. Have gone for lunch and supper there. The location is not very nice nor are the washrooms. I like the green curry udon the best.Crab ragoon ( don't think it is "authentic" thai dish but it tastes greatjust won ton wrapper with crab in it) The salad/summer rolls are good as well. Mango fruit shake similar to ones in thailand but not quite as good. It is too bad it is so far from home. Have been to Thailand, they have a nice variety on the menu.
