Review Naru Sushi Japanese Restaurant - Winnipeg

Ahmed K
Best sushi in Winnipeg! I come here a few times a month. I always get an order of the spicy jumbo roll (with salmon)and the Naru roll because they’re easy 10/10s. If you’re vegetarian they also have a huge vegetarian menu! I’ve tried the October rain roll after seeing recommendations here and it wasn’t my favourite. Still good, but way too much crispy yams for my liking! Sashimi quality is great and melts in your mouth, but portions could be bigger. Overall a real hidden gem and a place you need to try!

My favorite sushi place! Always fresh and tasty, never a long wait. The sushi pizza is great, highly recommend if you never tried it. The only thing I'm missing is sushi with mango. I believe it used to be on the menu, but not anymore.

I love it!! Favorite sushi place!! A large variety of options for rolls, and a very nice outside eating area aswell as a very nice indoor area. Everything was clean and tidy.

I am super picky about sushi as I truly love authentic sushi. But theirs are absolutely amazing! Sashimi and sushi are so fresh, and well done! + Friendly service! I will definitely go back to Naru sushi for special occasions!

10/10 stars!!! Having the best sushi in town! Reasonable price with great portion A loyal customer since 2019

Very good food and people, also fast service. Was there a few years ago and loved it! Going back this evening with my wife!

It was OK. I don’t think we need to go back. The rice on sushi was not flavorful. Some fish pieces where chewy. The soup had no tofu and wasn’t warms. The salad was a Korean app. Korean sushi. The sushi with toppings is better. Without mayo and fried bites I can’t.

We got a medium size sushi boat and omg it was amazing. Great quality more than enough for 2 people. Quick and friendly service. We'll worth the money. We will definitely go back

Cute spot in the heart of the village. Well made nigiri. Lots of vegetarian options as well as special rolls and plenty of classics. Delicious all around.

Came to Naru for lunch with a colleague. Came on a Friday afternoon during New Year week. To our surprise the restaurant was quite busy especially with the many Skip-The-Dish delivery people revolving through the door.<br/><br/>Despite how busy the restaurant was, service was quick and attentive. Naru sushi has a small dining room, one of the biggest problems is the lack of double doors. Each time someone comes in or leaves, there’s a huge draft of cold air that comes in.<br/><br/>As for the food, the portions are well presented, portions are generous and very tasty. There’s lots of competition in the area and if this placed skimped on portion or flavour there are plenty of other places to choose from. The fact that they have been around for a while is a testament to them doing a good job. If you’re looking for a reliable Skip-The-Dish sushi restaurant or are in the area, give them a try.<br/>

Basic Lovers party platter- delicious! <br/>Stuffed mushrooms, shrimp tempura <br/>Everything was amaazing. Will be ordering again. <br/>Although I wish skip credits / vouchers could be used with cash orders.

Best sushi in Osborne village. They have a cute patio in the summer but it could use more ambiance. Needs a bit of a renovation but the foods really good.

The inside is very nice, it feels very cozy. Prices are OK for sushi, expect to spend about 6-10 bucks for a roll (6 pieces max). The sushi was pretty good I would highly recommend the oklahoma and philadelphia roll. The butterfly roll was good although it was very fragile and fell apart easily. The dynamite was good as well. The spicy crunchy roll was dissappointing as it did not have much flavour. They have an interesting combo where your items come on a small wooden boat which is pretty cool if youre looking for an interesting experience and a lot of food. The service was very pleasent and quick. My biggest problem with the place was that it was FREEZING. The dining area itself was bearable, but I was wearing pants and a sweater. The bathroom was unbearably cold so I would not recommend a number 2 in there... Reasonably clean bathroom. Be careful going downstairs as I bonked my head on the low roof on the way down. I really should have faked an injury and sued.

Probably the best Sushi I've ever had. Excellent service and very reasonable prices, for high quality, well presented and delicious food. I have returned to Naru many times and ordered as take out as well. I highly recommend Naru to anyone who asks about sushi in Winnipeg.

Love this sushi place, very clean and has friendly staff. Sushi is amazing and high quality, the restaurant has nice decor as well. Would highly recommend.

One of my favorite sushi place in town, I order pretty much every week or so. Their regular rolls are so-so but their specialty roles are very delicious. Their Dark Horse and Ocean Maki are among some of my favorite sushi rolls in the city.

My boyfriend and I love this place ! Always consistent with the quality of food and customer service. Some items are a little on the pricey side but we have yet to be disappointed!

I've made 2 orders from Naru through Skip on different occasions. Ordered a variety of rolls which were served as a larger portion size. Though I enjoyed the food both times, all the rolls basically had similar ingredients: tempura shrimp, avocado or cucumber, imitation crab. It was hard to differentiate the rolls from one another. Naru is also on the pricier side as well. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit this restaurant but I will continue to order delivery if Skip doesn't improve their sushi restaurant options.

This is my favourite place to bring my friends when we have lunch dates! They offer a lot of sushi rolls that you really cannot find anywhere else in the city. The food is always consistent. Naru roll is my all time favourite. The lady who serves us is a sweetheart and very attentive.
Dongwook Kim
Best sushi Winnipeg has to offer. The rolls and nigiris are awesomely portioned and super fresh! Very reasonable pricing. When I went there for Saturday lunch, the waiter was extremely nice and attentive! Naru had been my favourite place for sushi for years and that won't change.

This Japanese Restaurant never failed me. Been here many times, ordered differently and everything was really good. Sashimi Sushi Roll Tempura Teriyaki Wine Udon named it, it's good! We'll keep coming back for sure. 😊👍🏼

The service is a bit lacking at times but when you compare the quality of the food to the price and selection you can't beat Naru. One of my favorites!

We had a fantastic dinner! I had just had a terribly long and hard day at work (over 12 hours, no lunch, no breaks), so my bf took me out for sushi to get my smile back and boy did this work! We had assorted tempura (crunchy with more than enough dipping sauce), dynamite hand rolls (awesome!), sushi pizza (delicious though they should ditch the maraschino cherry on top), real crab sunomono salad (large portion and my favourite!!), beef tataki (didn't like the dipping sauce but great beef), chicken gyoza (good but could use more flavour), and agedashi tofu (blocks were bigger than I expected but still delicious)!! Other reviews thought service was bad, but our server was excellent and friendly and smiled and got our food fast despite a full restaurant. He was lovely. He never refilled my water unless I asked, but it was the only thing. I will definitelyyy be back!

Takes 30-45 Minutes to get the order in, the sushi is my favorite so I put up with the lack of service. The drinks they made us when we asked for another round were clearly not what we ordered the first time, so they removed 1 of the drinks from the bill instead of both. I wouldn't hesitate to get take out here, but if you are in a rush or expect service.... good luck.<br/><br/>Updating my review from 4 to 5 because the last few times I’ve been here service was way better.
Jazz Marcelino
GREAT SUSHI, BAD SERVICE.<br/><br/>So far one of the best sushi I have ever tasted. <br/>However, every time I go here, the service is pretty whack. I don't mind the long wait and the unfriendly waitresses because I work in customer services myself and I get how busy it gets. but as a customer at this restaurant the only thing that's making me want to go back is the sushi.
Toby
One of the best collections of vegan/vegetarian sushi options! Many rolls, salads and soups. Try the vegetarian bakudan. Also the spicy tofu salad is amazing.
Johnson Michelle
Food was rich....heavy for sushi...miso soup and salad was good..memorable actually..the tempura looked better than it tasted as the coating was a bit thicker than I know tempura to be..
Lee Minglana
Very pleasant experience as this was my first sushi restaurant after coming back from Japan. As you can tell my expectations and bar was set at high. After seeing the presentation alone I was impressed. Tasting it was another story it did not taste like it was frozen nor did the rice taste mushy. It was a perfect combination of both the fish and the rice. Acidity was on point. Definetly a recommended sushi spot.

Found the best little gem. This place has the best sushi in town. Don't get confused by the comments. Everyone has their own taste and preference. The best way it to try it out. The spicy jumbo roll and dark horse are the best ones on the menus! And the giant sushi boat is to die for. Always excellent fresh sushi. Not enough people who love the place write reviews.
C Kehler
I have been to this place once. We had several sushi rolls and the shrimp/pork gyozas and agedashi tofu. The gyozas and tofu tasted all right but they were not outstanding. The Dark Horse roll was definitely a winner, though, and we very much enjoyed the other rolls. Presentation on all food items was perfect and the food on the other tables looked amazing too. The service was slow but polite.<br/><br/>We loved the wide variety of sushi rolls on the menu and we will definitely be back to try out some more. I think next time we will skip the other menu items and just stick to the rolls.

My husband and I went for a late lunch here today- we usually order from this restaurant on Skipthedishes, but we were in the neighborhood so we thought we'd stop by to see what a dine-in experience would be like.<br/><br/>We arrived around 2:00 pm, the space is small, and the place seemed to have a good amount of traffic for a non-peak meal time. We had both been to this establishment, maybe when it was Miyabi? But it has since gotten worn down... the carpet was old and very worn in spots, the restroom was dingy and kind of dirty... the tables and chairs were fine, and they provide the typical single use wooden chopsticks, so the cutlery was fine.<br/><br/>The food is always exceptional when we order- we're both vegetarian, and honestly this will be the BEST vegetarian sushi you will ever get in Winnipeg. The portions are so generous (the veg to rice ratio is just spot on) and the prices are very reasonable. They're also very generous with the ginger and wasabi (one of the things I find other sushi restaurants are very stingy with, some even charging extra when you need more). The one thing I found disturbing when the food arrived was what it came out on. Almost all of the dishes had chips, all over them! I'm 90% sure food establishments are supposed to dispose of dishes that have chips in them, as they can harbour bacteria, even when cleaned with an industrial dishwasher.<br/><br/>The serving staff (just one girl today) was fine, and our food came out very quickly.<br/><br/>All in all, I wouldn't go back for the ambience, but the sushi itself is just phenomenal. We will continue to order take-out from them through Skipthedishes and recommend them to friends and family.
Janine Lou
The food has been good every time we've gone. The rolls are a very good and large portion, delicious and made well; not too much rice and packed with lots of veggies. Very filling. The Poseidon, Red Scorpion, Spider roll and Shrek roll are all my favorites when we go there. The service is sometimes slow and takes time to order and get the bill and pay. It can get very busy. But it's a good place.
Christopher Moltisanti
You get what you pay for. Not the best sushi I've ever had, and not the worst. Well priced, and you'll enjoy it if you get the right things.

We dined here for dinner yesterday. This place is fantastic. For us, it is the best sushi we have ever had. Every time we dine here, we are thoroughly impressed. Yesterday we shared six rolls, some of which were the Shrek roll, October Rain, Veg Baku Dan, Veg Caterpillar, Ocean Roll. They were all fantastic! The star was the October Rain with the yam curls on top of it. Presentation here is outstanding. I admit this place is higher-priced but it is well worth it. We also enjoyed a half litre of red wine, and a banana tempura for dessert. Absolutely wonderful! Great service, too. Very good.

Mixed: A bit leary after a negative experience with service. I stopped by for lunch yesterday and ordered the 6 piece sushi combo. It came with miso soup, house salad and a California roll. Or so I thought. I received the soup and salad and shortly after, my 6 pieces of assorted nigiri. The waitress told me to enjoy my meal signalling that my order was complete. When the waitress came back to check up on me, I asked if there was also a California roll as well, and that I *thought* I saw it listed. She said that I was mistaken and looking at a different combo item- that the 4 piece combo was different than the 6 piece combo. I didn't ask to see the menu and gave her the benefit of the doubt. I ate the rest of the meal and paid.<br/><br/>Checking the menu pictures on Urbanspoon, I see now that the 6 piece sushi combo does include a California roll. I don't really know how to feel. It might've been a small mistake on the waitress' part. Maybe she really thought I was mistaken. But if there was any doubt, I wish she could've double-checked for me. I hope that she didn't realize her mistake and choose not to correct it... I'm sure this isn't a regular occurrence at Naru, but I might be more cautious in the future.<br/><br/>The food itself was standard sushi fare. Miso soup and house salad were nice. Salmon nigiri was fresh while tuna nigiri was slightly less so. Rice was a tad on the wet side, but I'm picky about rice. Overall food was ok and timely.
Ahajwh
Very mediocre Japanese food. 1) menu is overwhelming. One has to wonder with so many items available, how do they control the quality? Well, quality is poor.<br/><br/>2) nirigi and rolls had very wet rice.<br/><br/>3) fried items didn't taste fresh- oily and not crunchy at all<br/><br/>4) rolls tend to be overloaded wih sauce<br/><br/>5) fish on nirigi and rolls not fresh

Yum!!. Delicious sushi, fairly prompt service, and nice ambiance. I will be going back for more!!

Best place for sushi in the city!. If you haven't tried this place, you really should! Every roll I've ever gotten from here has been awesome! My favorite roll is hands down the sumo roll :)
Pickyeater
Favourite Sushi. I only started dining here recently, but it's already my favourite sushi restaurant. Their speciality rolls are so creative, and just looking at the menu will make you drool. I've loved every roll I've ordered so far, and I can't wait to try everything on the menu.
Brittany
Service is usually really good here, and the sushi quality is great. One of my favorite places in the city. Would definetly recommend!

Always a fantastic meal. I eat at this restaurant pretty often, and it is the sushi restaurant that I most often recommend. While the menu is dauntingly large, every single item on it is delicious. You will have a great meal no matter what you order! My favourites are the Ice Roll, Blue Mountain, October Rain, Yammy Smoked Salmon... but even the simple rolls are excellently executed.<br/><br/>As far as I can tell, they make the best takoyaki in town, too. If you haven't tried it, please do - it will surely lead to a takoyaki obsession.

Our group of hungry swimmers descended here after a full day competing at the pool. And we weren't disappointed. Quality of sushi and entrees was top level, and service was wonderful. Gyoza was a big item at our table - several went for a second round!
Erin
Love this place!. I'm embarrassed to admit how many times I've eaten here in the past month but I am making good headway on testing out many items on the menu. My favorites so far are the Big Spicy Roll, the Extreme Volcano (best shared with another), the Caterpillar Roll and the Naru Roll.
Caitlin Clearwater
I love this place! Definitely my favourite sushi in the area. The lunch specials are a great deal. The atmosphere is cozy, service is consistently good.

I went here for the first time and had a reservation so no need to wait since its saturday so a bit busy. We sat down gave the menu and order the food it took 15 minutes for appetizer to come and we order the special october rain and another roll. It took the order another 15 minutes they only gave 1 roll so were still waiting for another one and our server is rushing us to eat coz theres a lot of people waiting. I told her that im still waitinf for our order and maybe she forget that we still have order., so i felt so rushy im a customer aswell and orderin same thing!! The issue is no need for us to rush!!
Bella
This is a small restaurant, however the taste and visual presentation serves it's value. The platter is beautifully presented (I ordered the small sushi, sashimi, roll boat) and it comes on a Woden boat. It's fresh fish at a great price. There's specials like a small boat or big boat for reasonable prices, but beat the "all you can't eat" quality. It's quality and delicious. You can also order individual types of Japanese food and sushi. Overall friendly staff, fantastic food, good job guys.

Sad times.. This used to be my absolute favourite sushi restaurant. I preferred it over Meiji and Wasabi. Unfortunately, since the new owners have taken over, I have noticed a drop in quality. The tuna in the bakudan rolls wasn't as fresh as before. I think the lunch specials are still a good value for money, but I wouldn't come here for special occasions anymore.

Although the owners are always Korean ppl, my favorite soft crab appt and the rice paper roll with Unagi and green opinion are all GONE!! Nothing else will make me walk back into Naru. Sorry!
Gigi
My favorite in the city. I eat sushi often enough and after trying many different restaurants in Winnipeg, this one is still my favorite. Their roles are so different and inventive compared to other sushi places and they make by far the BEST bakudan I've ever had. I will definitely be going back in the near future.
UniCorn On The Cob
$70 of uninspired, boring, plain tasting sushi. I was SO disappointed. First time Last time.

We have been your regular customers for 5 +years. Though they have a frequent management change, the new owners catch up to the classic Naru standards. I go to Sushi Ya once in a while but when in Winnipeg, do Naru is my motto. <br/>Thanks for being outstanding. Great service, affordable prices and great location. <br/>5 stars!!

Good Food - Bad Service. Went here with a group of four for dinner. We had read good reviews and were excited to try it. Upon arrival we were sat rather quickly considering we made a reservation, but our server was no where to be seen. The only time she came over was to take our order which was 20 minutes after we had sat down. Being a server myself, this is unacceptable. We ordered appetizers that came out at different times which is also unacceptable and the length of time it took to get our food was excessive. We were there for two hours in all which was too long when we only ordered a few dishes. The food was fantastic, but the service really kills it.

We stopped by on a weekend night out of curiosity. After sitting down we promptly got the tea we ordered and within another 10 min had our food. Very fast! The vegetarian roll with peppers and cream cheese was surprisingly tasty, the bakudan had an ENORMOUS amount of tuna for the price, and everything else we tried was very good. Not being someone who usually goes out on a limb, I ordered a couple rolls I had never tried before and was a bit nervous that I wouldnt like them (new restaurant, new dishes), but everything was tasty. <br/><br/>We were in and out in just under 40 min, which was incredible and efficient. Very pleased. We'll be back.

I was very disappointed in Naru sushi today, I used to be a frequent twice a week customer before I moved out of province. I was super excited to be back but the service is horrible now, there was a miscommunication when ordering a full order of salmon sashimi and we ended up receiving a plate of assorted sashimi when we received it it became an argument as to who heard what and the server didn't know what to do when we politely asked her to exchange it to what we had ordered it was until my significant other lost his temper a bit and told her to take it back to the kitchen and to get our correct order that she finally took it back. The portions of the rest of the order had also significantly shrunk. I was quite disappointed in service and quality of the food since I've been there last. I've told lots of people lots of good things about this place and feel as though they will be let down by my recommendation to go there now
MrsB
Amazing sushi and very fast service. My husband and I eat a lot of sushi, this is the sushi we've ever eaten in Winnipeg hands down. The rolls are so huge we couldn't even finish 4 between the two of us!

Dropped in for lunch Sushi special. It was very good. Service was friendly. I'll be back.

Love Naru. I love Naru I just wish it didn't kill my wallet every time I go cuz it's so good~!! Try the spicy dynamite...it's one of the best sushi rolls I've ever had...sooo yummy! Service is good too~ Best sushi in the osborne area~
Sufitza
This is my fave sushi restaurant! The rolls are delish, sashimi is fresh, and environment is cozy. However the service, I find, is much better in the evening. It's a shame because the lunch specials are such good value. It's not horrid service, but in comparison to the service you recieve in the evening, it's disappointing and definately inconsistent.

Comfort & enjoyment. Today I went to this restaurant with my teenage daughter and I ate the best sushi of my life. Freshness and expertise are present. Sweet atmosphere. Go ahead without hesitation, you'll get your money!
Matt T
This place had pretty good sushi and a goo variety. Not sure if it was the rolls that I ordered, but I've bad better sushi at later restaurants.
Monique Emelia
LOVE this place! Have been impressed with the sushi and service everytime. The owner/ chef is always very friendly and always seems to greet customers upon arrival and when leaving. Definitely recommend it! Lovely little place with the best bakudan rolls and shrimp tempura!
NewYorkDoll
Best sushi in WPG. Went here for a date with my boyfriend that lives on the coast. He is used to amazing sushi and was impressed by Naru. The Blue Mountain roll was a highlight and everyone that goes there should be obligated to try it. <br/><br/>The only downside was that the server wouldnt put my fresh beer on the table when i had ~1" of beer left in my bottle because it was "against the law". The law states I may have two alcoholic beverages in front of me of reasonable size or 3 oz. Once I was done the first beer it took her a while to bring me my next one back to the table. That tease! As long as their staff becomes more comfortable with the liquor laws, I could easily go there once a week.

Great sushi. Love it. Try the monkey brains =))

I went this place with my friend on saturday, it seems to be busy but we got good service and had no truble getting our food quick!<br/><br/>I had sumo lunch box for $13 and it was sooo delicious! Sashimi was very fresh and sumo roll was just amazing. My friend ordered october roll and baked roll, they were good too!! <br/><br/>I recomend lunch boxes, many options available with very friendly price.<br/>Will go back for sure.

Will Return!!. I really enjoyed this cozy place as well as the atmosphere. The service wasn't bad at all and the mood was pleasant. My girlfriend told me about this place so i wanted to check it out seeing that i love my sushi so i was up for it. I had a stir fry before my sushi and that wasn't to bad nothing special but it was the sushi that won me over for sure. It was very fresh and tasted fantastic. You could tell the ingredients where fresh. The presentation was pretty nice too. Also just had some common rolls and those were good too! Will return for sure in the future. When it comes to sushi you should check out other places and not just keep going to the same old place!

Baku Dan Maki Paradise!. I try other sushi restaurants but I keep coming back to Naru Sushi. It's all good, but the baku dan maki is particularly fabulous.
Laura
Changes?. Did the Inari roll stop containing avocado, or did they just forget it this time? Either way, disappointed. Not enough sauce on the vegetarian baku dan, either. This was once my favorite spot to get unique vegetarian rolls, but quality has decreased gradually over the years, and other places have started making better veggie rolls, so there is no more incentive to go here anymore, especially with all the better places on Osborne and Corydon.

I just don't get all the great reviews??. I'm a religious sushi eater, i absolutely love it and a lot of my friends trust me in what's great in sushi. <br/>i went into this place which had a nice atmosphere. <br/>but the chirashi i just didn't get? it was like most of the fish put on the rice wasn't even ~real~ fish; it tastes like imitation except for the salmon. it didn't have that lovely strong taste that i loved about the chirashi. the rice wasn't good either, it was cold and had no seaweed or sesame seeds on it which i usually get with a chirashi dish. usually the rice comes in the dish warm.<br/><br/>i also got the sunomono salad with octopus which was my absolute favourite, and the octopus didn't really look fresh at all and there was something off about the sauce and the ratio between the cucumber/octopus and the noodles were way off. i got more noodles than anything! <br/><br/>i was really disappointed because i could of gotten one of my favourite dishes for 7 bucks cheaper! definitely not worth the 20 and i wouldn't recommend. i was sad i had to pay :(<br/><br/>but the miso soup was good!

My personal favorite sushi spots on the peg. There are lots but this is my fav.

Worth A Visit. Quite a nice place. A bit smaller than it looks from the outside, but very comfortable. Note that you have to go up and down two flights of stairs to get to the washrooms, though.<br/><br/>The service was fast, attentive and accommodating to special requests. I was there with a large party, and everyone got what they asked for without any mix-ups and everyone always had a full water glass.<br/><br/>The food was very good with lots of vegetarian options beyond the standard Cucumber/AC/ACC/CC rolls. I fell in love with the Sweet Pepper roll and would recommend it to anyone. I'll absolutely be going back to sample more of the menu, and I'll be taking other folks with me.

Decent sushi, but not great. I was (and will be back) in Winnipeg for work related reasons. I wanted to try out some of the ethnic restaurants to see how they stacked up to my favorites back on the West Coast. This was my first stop on a tour of the sushi places. The food was good, but it was not amazing. I dont mean that as a crack at the restaurant, the fish was not as fresh as I could have hoped for and it was also winter so the ingredients were not as flavorful. The ambiance is good and the staff were attentive.
Ammo
Sad that the new owners switched from wild salmon to farmed, also the rolls just weren't what they used to be, everything tasted slightly sweet for some reason including the sashimi.<br/><br/>The vegetable salad was also swimming in sugar. Was quite sad as I've been going to this place for 7 years and went through one owner change, don't think I will return sadly.
The Oakwood Cafe
One of my favourite Sushi Spots. I really enjoy going to Naru when I have a hankering for sushi. The rolls are unique, the prices are reasonable and the service is pretty good too.<br/><br/>It's just a nice cozy environment!<br/><br/>Remember to always support your independent restaurants :)
DineoutGal
Good value and enjoyable sushi meal. This place has undergone ownership changes and is now called "Naru Sushi" instead of Miyabi. But many things have remained the same including the decor which hasn't changed much. I don't really like the banquette seating here and unfortunately that has remained from the past owners. The banquette seating is way too high and fluffy so it makes for a somewhat odd seating experience. Try to get a table by the window with regular chairs instead.<br/><br/>The menu is fairly large - lots of appetizers and rolls to choose from. Pricing here is very fair and I might even say inexpensive for sushi. They have lots of lunch specials that range from $8-$10.<br/><br/>I really liked the "magurli" ($7.50), this is an appetizer dish that serves up 5 slices of tuna tataki that sits on a thin slice of cucumber and topped with crab and avocado and flying fish roe with a slight drizzle of kimchee sauce. Very interesting flavours on this Japanese/Korean dish.<br/><br/>The "Osborne Roll" ($7.50) has tuna tataki with tempura crumbs, a green leaf and sesame sauce was rather bland and disappointing. The "spicy chopped scallop roll" ($5.50) was delicious with a good zing and had the right amount of mayo. A really good roll topped with toro is the "Moonbow Roll" for $12.50. Another fave is the "Ohana Roll" ($9.50) which has tuna and avocado, topped with wild salmon. $16 for a wild salmon and fatty tuna sashimi order was well worth it as the portions were quite decent and the fish was pretty good. It wasn't the best sashimi I've had but good enough.<br/><br/>Wine is pretty inexpensive here as their house white (sauvignon blanc) was only $5.50 for a 5 ounce pour.<br/><br/>Service is effective and nice though the server wasn't super knowledgeable with some of the questions we had. But overall, a good sushi place and serves up to be a romantic place for dinner or a good place to catch up with a few friends over sushi and a nice quiet atmosphere.

My favourite!. This is my favourite sushi restaurant. They have a huge variety of vegetarian rolls which I love. Some places I've been to have a cucumber roll and a shiitake roll and that's it. Naru has tons of veggie versions of regular rolls, like veggie california, veggie bakudan etc... <br/>I go there or get take-out at least once a month, and the sushi is always the same high quality I expect!<br/>Yum!

Nice evening out before comedy.. Great sushi and service. Clean and neat place to grab sushi and enjoy a quiet evening meal. We were visiting from below the border and found the reviews for Naru to want to visit for our first sushi experience in Winnipeg. I believe we made a great choice. The parking is a bit of a challenge in the area, but there is a pay and park just a half block north.
Slowlife999
I love sushi!. 1. Good variety on the menu.<br/>2. Expensive.<br/>3. Excellent service.

Different & Delicious. As usual, I decided to give this sushi restaurant a go based on all the good US reviews. And once again, they were right! While I love my little go-to sushi restaurant, Ginza Sushi, I occasionally venture out elsewhere searching for new and exciting offerings. Naru definitely succeeded in this area. They have a large selection of rolls that include some very different and unique rolls I have never seen or tasted before, which made it difficult and time consuming for me to finally decide what to order. I eventually decided and ordered 3 rolls for myself; the vegetarian california roll, which had tempura eggplant inside instead of fake crab and was simple but delicious; the veggie sunomono roll, which was full of flavorful thin rice noodles, very unique and tasty; and the Blue Mountain Roll, which was filled with crab, a couple of sauces, fish eggs, and topped with a blueberry, sprinkled with a strong cheese. The Blue Mountain was definitely the oddest roll I've ever tasted, but almost everything worked together and it tasted great. The one thing I did not like and perhaps I missed reading it on the menu, was the cheese that came sprinkled on the plate. Personally, I am not a huge cheese fan and this one in particular while miniscule on the plate, gave off a strong odor. Other than that everything was delicious and very enjoyable. <br/>My bf ordered the miso chicken roll, which came with a tasty, slightly spicy sauce and another roll (cannot remember the name) that was filled with yam tempura. Both were good. We also shared the gyoza which did not come with a dipping sauce (I thought was odd) and were good but nothing spectacular. Service was decent, food was out quickly, and we both enjoyed all the food. If you are in the village and want sushi this is the place to go!

Meh.. The food here is good enough, but the smell of mildew hampers the atmosphere.

Chirashi. Beautiful presentation, great value for quality and variety of fish. Best in the city, by miles. (so far)

Fantastic!! YUM- WOW!!. Visiting from Vancouver - LOVED your sushi. Lovely presentation, fresh and great value.<br/>Went twice in 1 week.<br/>Thought it would be impossible to find good sushi on the prairies!

Great little place. We had fantastic service in this little family run restaurant. The menu was huge and diverse and all of the fish and seafood was very fresh. Didn't care much for the cramped, bizarre basement bathroom (not wheelchair accessible, FYI) but it was the only pitfall of our experience. Everything was tasty, served up quickly and super healthy! Also, quite affordable: I paid $14.50 for a half an appetizer (price split with dining companion), green tea and a 6pc roll.
Oh Baby
Yes please.. My favourite. I really can't get enough. Their specialty roles are the best, and the service is great. They had a bad waitress at one point but she left and now it's back up to my high standards. Some roles are a tad expensive, but the price is worth it. The lunch deals (the bento boxes) are an amazing deal, even my jobless friends can afford it, and they go often. The owner always greets and it's really a special touch to know the real owner overlooks things. I recommend it to everyone, and to you. Some people complain, but they're just bitter people in general perhaps.

Only okay.. This place used to be known as Miyabi and the food used to be superb. Fresh, well-prepared and generally delicious. It's now called Naru Sushi and the quality seems to have dropped two notches. Not as fresh or impressive as it used to be.

Best best best!. I love this place. Loved it when it was Miyabi too. The staff are always the nicest and the ambiance is great. And they are the only Sushi restaurant (correct me if I'm wrong) that offer Chicken Karaage! My absolute favourite. I

My Favourite Sushi Place. This is the first place I ever went to have sushi and it is by far my favourite. Its got a nice atmosphere and the staff is very nice. The sushi is delicious and the prices are reasonable as well. Also the candies they give after are yummy too.<br/><br/>The vegetarian Caterpillar roll is my favourite. Make sure you ask for the Negi Toro roll too, I don't think its on the menu anymore but they will still make it for you.

Worst suchi place i've ever been to. First off the waitress told us we had to pay her a $10 dollar tip just to eat there. since she stated this, we had expected very fine dishes.. what did we get? we might as well have made sushi at home! the waitress ignored us for the rest of the night, the miso soup was tasteless and cold, the rice was dry and bland, the veggie tempura tasted stale... so awful.<br/><br/>don't make the same mistake. if you're a sushi lover, don't waste your time. if you don't know anything about sushi take my advice and don't bother. and if you think this place is top notch, you've got bad taste.

I didn't expect much when I first walked in but was pleasantly surprised. Very nice tasting special rolls

Amazing!. I first went to Naru on Osborne about 2 months ago - since then I have returned about once a week (take-out or dine in)! <br/>I am a sushi addict and have recommended this to everyone I know that likes sushi. They have a great selection of rolls (a whole page of vegetarian!) at affordable prices. Their menu is quite extensive and includes pictures and good descriptions.<br/>I usually order edamame beans and 2-3 rolls and my bill comes to between $20 and $30 depending on which rolls I get that time around.

Great food but pricey. Service- friendly but very slow, we waited for over 20 minutes to get our rools and the restaurant was not busy at all.<br/><br/>food- we ordered some of their special rolls which are not common in sushi restaurants and they were just great.<br/><br/>price- we spent almost $50 per person and finally got full. I would get back if it is not that pricy.
Andrea
The best sushi in Winnipeg!

Sushi heaven. The last time I went here was when this place was known as Miyabi. With the revamped menu I found rolls that I really wanted to try. <br/><br/>The seared scallop roll was a hit ... the scallop was cooked perfectly. The only thing is eat this roll all at once because once it sits for a while its not as good. The vegetarian bakudan roll was also one of the favorites. The prices were reasonable and the quality was very nice. <br/><br/>Our server was attentive and accommodating.
I Love Good Food
Ok. Not great. Would definitely try other places before going back here. Fuji roll was about the only thing that I actually enjoyed.

Quick, cheap, deeelisshhh. Very friendly staff, sushi came out in like less than 10 minutes, i really like the atmosphere very clean and not pretentious. my fave was the Suomo Roll !! also the Smokey Salmon Yam roll was good, although my friend was not a fan of the overbearing smokey taste. the owner greeted us after the meal, top 5 for sushi in the Peg !

The top of their takeout menu states "free delivery on orders over $30, before taxes". What they mean by this is you have to spend $30 to get anything delivered, and they are going to charge you a delivery fee. there goes my dinner plans...

Love it!. I recommend Yammy Smoke Roll. It has yam inside with smoked salmon on top. Also, Naru roll, it is kind of pricy but worth it! It is a luxurious roll. I don't know what sauce it is, but the white sauce on top is greaaaaat! I just love this place.

Lovely!!. I live in osborne and walk down to naru at least once a week. they are always bright and cheery. the food is always fantastic. the lighting is really nice and they have great lunch deals if you sit in !

New owner different chef from Miyabi, shouldn't say former Miyabi miss direct customers

What are you thinking?. I'm dumbfounded.<br/><br/>My lovely wife and I dropped in for lunch on Saturday.<br/><br/>She had her usual veggie udon, which was very good as always.<br/><br/>I had my usual sushi and sashimi lunch, plus I decided to go for a softshell crab appetizer/ I'd had the appetizer many times, and it's always been great.<br/><br/>HOWEVER, it seems the new owners have tweaked a few dishes.<br/><br/>The crab dish was....frankly....a joke. The crab was caked in far too much batter, and fried for far too long, making all but the main body of the crab an overly-crispy wad of batter. The dish was served atop what appeared to be a box full of packing peanuts , but turned out to be some kind of puffed noodle with no flavor or redeeming qualities at all. Around the plate were slices of radish and lemon, too thin to sqeeze, a forest of parsley perched on top, and to crown the whole thing was a marachino cherry! WTF?!?!?<br/><br/>It was both sad and hilarious at the same time.<br/><br/>My sushi was good, with the exception of one type of fish, which had a distinctly moldy taste.<br/><br/>We won't be going back.<br/><br/><br/>-----03 Sep, 2013-----<br/><br/>Rapidly declining, unfortunately. Naru used to be my favorite sushi place in town. The first owners were EXCELLENT and built it's great reputation. The second owners didn't change a thing, and had great success. The third and current set of owners, however, are starting to cut costs with cheaper ingredients, and lower standards all around, including a lower level of service.<br/><br/>Our server on Saturday was clueless about the menu in general, and when I sent back my sunomono salad because the octopus it came with had been cooked to a hard piece of rubber, she didn't had the common decency to get back to me and follow up in any way.<br/><br/>The salmon, which used to be incredibly tasty wild salmon is now flavorless and almost white.<br/><br/>And, to top it all off, the restaurant itself is now being all 'junked up' with little Asian knick-knacks that you'd expect to find in a 12-year-old girl's bedroom. Sorry, but I don't want to see Hello Kitty crap in the same place I'm spending $100 on lunch.<br/><br/>You can see it just slipping away........<br/><br/><br/>-----03 Dec, 2012-----<br/><br/>New owner succeeds in keeping quality high. Naru has been our favorite sushi place for years, now. My biggest fear when the previous owners decided to move away from Winnipeg was that someone would take over, and Naru would turn into just another OK sushi place.<br/><br/>We returned for the second time since the new owner took over, which has been several months now, and while they have a new menu, many of the best dishes from the past have been maintained, and some new one added.<br/><br/>The chef remebered us from his previous restaurant, and even sent over a complimentary appetizer....classy, and good for business.<br/><br/>With great service throughout, our lunches were excellent - perfectly sized, fresh, and tasty.<br/><br/>The table next to us had one of the most impressive dishes I've ever seen, which I'm definitely ordering next time - it was called October Rain, and was composed of a large roll, containing deep-freid shrimp among other things, topped with a very generous pile of shoe-string yam 'fries". It looked Awesome, and the lucky patrons confirmed it tasted as good as it looked.<br/><br/>Still the best sushi in town.<br/><br/><br/>-----14 May, 2012-----<br/><br/>ANOTHER new owner, and a few wrinkles. Naru has for years been our go-to spot for a nice family dinner, so it was a natural choice for mother's day.<br/><br/>As soon as we arrived, I knew something was up. The usual owners, always very warm and welcoming, were nowhere to be seen. My feeling was confirmed during the meal, as things were not quite as they'd been under the old owners.<br/><br/>As it turns out, the most recent owners, who changed the name from Miyabi to Naru several years ago, are moving to Toronto. The new owner took over a couple of weeks ago.<br/><br/>The menu hasn't changed a bit. Overall, the quality seems to been on par with what it was, but there were a few misses that could be attributed to new staff, new chefs, or perhaps some slightly relaxed standards (but I hope that's not the case)<br/><br/>First, service throughout our meal was fast and frequent, though under-trained, and not familiar with the menu.<br/><br/>My "Sushi and Sashimi Dinner" (which I've had MANY times) comes with side sunomono salad, which comes with a piece of imitation crab. When it was delivered without any crab, and I pointed it out, I was told I could choose from imitation crab, real crab, or Octopus. Dubious, I went with Octopus, only to be told a few minutes later that side sunomonos only came with imitation crab....no surprise to me, but apparantly it was to the server.<br/><br/>Our 4 miso soups were delicious, but luke warm at best.<br/><br/>All of our dinners tasted great, with quality and portions being maintained, with two notable exceptions.<br/><br/>Normally, a spider roll is stuffed full of soft-shell crab, with half of the legs sticking out one end, and half the other, resulting in a striking, large dish. The one we received yesterday was clawless, for some reason.<br/><br/>Also, my set dinner comes with two hand-rolls, and one of the hand-rolls, a spicy tuna roll, was nearly tuna-less. All I could detect were tempura bits and hot sauce.<br/><br/>We also shared a Soft Kani (soft shell crab) appetizer. The crab was excellent, as always, but the salad it was served with was definitely not. Described as a salad "with homemade dressing", the dressing it was served with was definitley a bottled italian, and the lettuce itself was swimming in it. In my opinion, the ONLy dressing that should be on salad in a Japanese place is the traditional soy/ginger/sesame dressing found in every sushi restaurant.<br/><br/>The new owner was on hand, but remained silent throughout our visit. I strongly suggest she start getting out and meeting her guests, and getting to know her regulars. She also needs to keep a sharp eye on standards. These slips were minor, and I sincerely hope they were just indicative of new staff.<br/><br/><br/>-----20 Feb, 2012-----<br/><br/>The best lunch!!. Dropped in for lunch today, and as usual, left happy campers.<br/><br/>I enjoyed a California lunch special, while the better half had the Udon Tempura special.<br/><br/>The soup's amazing, and Naru's tempura is some of the best.<br/><br/>I couldn't help but order one of my favorites dishes as well.....the Soft Kani. 4 huge pieces of soft shell crab, lightly breaded and flash-fried to perfection. mmmmmmm<br/><br/>As I've always said....the best in the city!!<br/><br/><br/>-----11 Jul, 2011-----<br/><br/>Another home run for Naru. We hadn't been to Naru for a few months, so we decided that a visit was in order last night. The wife, 2 sons (19 and 15), and I had one of the best meals we've ever had.....anywhere. Maybe it was the lovely evening, but my usually reserved wife and youngest son each tried a few new dishes, and made some pleasant discoveries.<br/><br/>Here's a brief breakdown of some of the dishes we had. I know I won't get all of the names right.....<br/><br/>As soon as we sat down, we received a large complimentary serving of edamame. We usually receive something comlimentary, which I suspect is because we're regulars, we always treat the staff and owners as gratiously as they treat us, and I always tip well because of the great service.<br/><br/>App: soft kani - softshell crab served with dipping sauce and a salad. The crab was amazing, tasting fresh, lightly crispy, and perfect on the inside. The sauce is like a light, sweet soy-type sauce that compliments them nicely. The salad doesn't add anything to the dish, and is more of a distraction really. <br/><br/>App: Tuna tataki - one of my favorites. 10 thick slices of lightly-grilled tuna, still raw in the middle, served over a large raft of shredded daikon, sprinkled with a few green onion, served with what I suspect was the same dipping sauce as the crab.....delicious.<br/><br/>Mains and rolls: Sushi and Sashimi dinner, my staple, a collection of very large pieces of assorted nigiri, two hand rolls (spicy tuna and california), and 2 each of wild salmon, tuna, scallop, clam, and ?butter? fish sashimi. Each slice was large and super-fresh.<br/><br/>Spicy wakame roll - spicy tuna and a few other things, with tempura crumbs and a creamy-type sauce - one of the best rolls I've ever had.<br/><br/>soft crab roll - awesome.<br/><br/>Garden roll - a gigantic roll full of assorted veggies.....for my non-fish-eating wife.<br/><br/>2 orders of teriaki chicken rolls aka chicken nugget sushi - for wife and younger son. Chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.<br/><br/>2 more vegetarian rolls for younger son - sunomono roll, with noodles, veggies, tempura crumbs, and some kind of creamy sauce - I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was....very nice. Plus, a veggie dragon roll, with avocado across the top, and who-knows-what inside.....he loved it.<br/><br/>Service was very good (we were looked after by a new male server who didn't miss a thing), and our dishes came out quickly. The biggest problem we had was fitting everything on the table.<br/><br/>This perfect evening re-inforces my personal opinion that NARU is THE BEST sushi place in town.<br/><br/><br/>-----22 Feb, 2011-----<br/><br/>Simply the best - every time!. It's not often I'm willing to shell out $120+ to feed the family, but when I do, Naru's one of the few places I'm willing to go.<br/><br/>Each and every time we arrive, we're warmly greeted by the owners - she, who doesn't speak much english always has a huge smile for us, and he, who's much better with the language, always welcomes us back with handshakes and a personal greeting.<br/><br/>The girls who take care of service are knowledgable and attentive.<br/><br/>Last night, we enjoyed many delicious items, including the soft kani and tuna tataki apps, a few sunomono salads, a couple of chicken teriaki rolls for son #1, a garden salad roll and perfectly-cooked tempura for the missus, a spider roll and a fancy tuna-based roll whose name I forget for son #2, and the sushi-and-sashimi dinner for moi.<br/><br/>Everything was fresh, tasty, and generously-cut.<br/><br/>For my money, Naru's THE place for sushi in Winnipeg.<br/><br/><br/>-----07 Apr, 2009-----<br/><br/>Best Sushi In Winnipeg!. Hands down, this is the best place in town for sushi! Awesome staff, superb food, and an owner who greets (and remembers) his customers and seems to truly appreciate your business.
