My Mom and I popped in for lunch on Saturday and I had the coronation chicken sandwich with a side of borscht. Everything was so fresh and delish! We also shared a piece of earl grey cheesecake, which was amaaaaaazing! In addition to the great food, The Oakwood Bistro has lovely staff. Our waiter was very personable. My Mom and I really enjoyed our lunch and will be back for sure!

Me and my husband have been to The Oakwood Bistro a few times and we loved it everytime we went. Just came from there this evening and noticed the menu changed, but was amazing. We'll bring our mamas here for dinner one day. Amazing food, nice staff, and the restaurant is beautiful.
I ate at the Oakwood Cafe for the first time today and enjoyed what was the best tomato and pepper soup I've ever tasted. Literally. I had a caesar salad, too, which was delicious. But the soup was utterly amazing.
Came in for breakfast with my son and my husband. It was a bit busy, but we had the loveliest waitress. She said it was her first day back after two years and her service was really stellar. Food was great and we really enjoyed ourselves!
Don't be put off by the exterior or location (next to a pizza take away), this restaurant serves absolutely fabulous food. The interior was modern, well laid out and nicely decorated. The staff were not just polite but friendly too, and the food was delicious, especially the meat. While I appreciate that not many diners will have a baby in tow, my only gripe is the lack of a baby changing unit in the bathroom.
One of the best restaurants Winnipeg has to offer :)
Yum yum yum! My husband and I have vowed to return! The food we had was wonderfully tasty and cooked perfectly. It came out hot and did not disappoint. Portions were a good size and ingredients were fresh. There are so many more items on the menu we wish to try. Home style comfort food with a twist. Great recipes! They know how to combine flavours. This restaurant is a good place for a casual date or dinner with friends or family. Service was friendly. It's a smaller space and filled up quickly for dinner. They do take reservations!
I love the creative and fresh food that I get at the Oakwood. Friendly and very competent servers, and always a touch of elegance. The food is reasonably priced for the quality that you get. I look forward to visiting the Oakwood every time I get to Winnipeg.
California Veggie Burger and the beet borscht soup were excellent. Small town restaurant vibes, big city menu. Superb service, very kind to seniors. Overall awesome. ✔
I been to this restaurant 3 times and everytime I go. I was served quality food and service is always on point. The price is medium high but for the quality food it's really worthed. There might be a little way upon arrival, so I highly recommend calling a head of time as they are always busy. It's perfect option for breakfast and brunch.
Ordered the bacon cheeseburger and fries with skip the dishes. I was on a hungover mission to find a good burger. Got the food and it was delicious. Was very happy that for 16 bucks I got a pretty good portion. Will definitely be ordering again.
Great food. Excellent prices. Burgers and fries are amazing. A staple of the south Osborne area. I've tried most things on their burger menu and am never disappointed. Lots of cool and unique burger combinations.
Party of 9 tonight. I thought the food was excellent and service was good. Place was busy. I had a burger and the Alfredo fries. Others had fish and chips, beef stroganoff, more burgers etc. Everyone was happy and satisfied. Food was a little slow being served but with 9 of us we are always busy yaking anyway. We would definitely go back. This was our first visit.
I was here this evening for Burger Week 2016. The Thanksgiving burger was actually so-so, as I think we had mashed potatoes substituted for stuffing, and the cranberry mayo and pulled turkey were severely lacking (especially compared to the picture).
HOWEVER:
The service and atmosphere more than made up for it, as you can tell that this is a restaurant interested in building rapport with their customers and establishing a repeat clientele. Yes, there was a long wait and the soup side didn't come out first as requested (and there were mashed potatoes substituted for stuffing in the burger without mentioning it in advance... like I wouldn't notice), but you can tell they care and therefore I'm more than intrigued to return again and see what else they can do!
Visited the oak wood for lunch. The restaurant was very quiet. We had excellent service. I might have had one of the best soups I've ever had- carrot, ginger, honey. I paired that with the Alfredo poutine (I rarely order poutine). I also loved that. My guest enjoyed a classic favorite- the Denver omelette, which she also enjoyed. Would recommend and revisit.
We went for a late lunch on July 2nd. We experience friendly, fantastic service. I ordered the Reuben with messy fries and water, my husband ordered Jambalaya. Our order came out hot. fresh and delicious. We have never experienced anything but consistently good service and food here.
Went here a few months ago.
I was always hesitant to go because of the menu price, but friends kept recommending it because they kept telling me the price reflected the food quality.
My first impressions of the place was that the decor was that it was clean and kept up, but nothing fancy.
I ordered a sandwich with side salad, and a soup with coffee. My bill after taxes but before tip was around $20-25, which is quite steep. The food did taste amazing, and the ingredients and preparation were top notch, but the quantity made me wanting more considering the bill price.
It's by no means the most expensive lunch I have had, however it's hard for me to consider returning unless I started making more money or if there was a better value draw to the place. I feel like they are trying to attract a higher class of patrons, however given the location and decor, I think they're missing the mark. If their prices were about 20% less, I feel this would be a 5/5 rating.
Went here for dinner. I had the beef stroganoff which I personally really liked, thought it was a good example of the dish and the amount they gave was good for leftovers. (The only other place I couldnt finish a meal was Bistro Dansk) The inside of the restaurant was appropriate for the place. Only mishap was waiter forgot my coffee for a while but not a deal breaker for me.
Kinda funny too, but I would never expect a small place like this to offer Air Miles but it did if you care about that.
Great Food! Great Service! I love the decor and the atmosphere is very cozy. I come here quite often with friends, as the menu offers a large selection of foods to meet everyone's taste. The portions are quite large too.
Love this place! I first found out about it from a Groupon deal and definitely not regretting it! The first time I got the Monte Cristo sandwich, which wasn't my favorite but the french fries always make up for it. Second time I tried the Grilled Cheese & Bacon(a classic) with Blue Cheese Fries, amazing! The only thing I don't like about this place is the hours. I find they close a bit too early on Weekdays.
Just had my second visit to the Oakwood and it certainly beat my first visit. On my first visit I made the mistake of ordering a shrimp skewer on the side of my Greek salad. The skewer appeared fine at first....because the cooked side was facing up. The other side was completely raw. I discovered this while chewing on the first shrimp. Very unpleasant surprise.
The second visit was terrific. Tried the blue cheese burger which was outstanding. Had very pleasant service on both visits.
Will be coming back in the future.
We came looking for breakfast. This restaurant is worth the drive.
The food is delicious, fresh, and reasonably priced. The service is prompt but not overbearing or in-your-face.
PTSD friendly with every table having a wall, enough lighting to see clearly but not so bright as to make one feel in the spotlight, and the background music quiet enough to hear conversations.
decent but kinda over rated imho. went for week end brunch. love/hate how seniors cut in line for a table lol. the menu was very straight forward with few surprises. the food was ok tho not very interesting. good but not great
Very modern! The breakfast is delicious! I would reccomend coming more for the burgers and fast food because this place is better at fast food then fancy dishes! Staff are nice and friendly and fast... I would reccomend the Alfredo fries which are DELICIOUS!!!!! Overall a cute place to enjoy breakfast or fast foot!
I've been here twice now - once for breakfast and once for dinner and both meals were great.
Breakfast: Eggs benedict. Comes with fresh fruit. Delicious.
Dinner: Burger and fries. You can choose any one of their burgers with beef, chicken or veggie patty which is convenient for my vegetarian boyfriend.
My tip would be try seeing if there's any coupons you can snatch before heading here. I saw several advertised on the way out and our waiter even asked us before ordering if we had any - so seems like they put quite a few out there.
First time at The Oakwood for Sunday breakfast. Ordered the Twisted Farmer Benedict, but with a garden salad (need to compromise somewhere for my diet hehe) instead of their potato wedges (which was, as per my dining mate, "just WoW")!! Everything on my plate was amazing - corned beef was the best I've ever had!! No deli style corned beef here! The salad was so crisp & vibrant. The fruit cup was sweet & cut in just the right size.
I plan to visit this restaurant frequently! My suggestion: Make a reservation!
I visited the oakwood around lunchtime on a Friday and was surprised to see the place was totally packed! The service was well timed and unobtrusive, the food came out piping hot and really delicious. I had the Brekkie Burger which was a ton of food but so tasty. It seemed like everything was made fresh in house and the egg was fried to perfection (tough to find!) all in all I had a great experience, though it was a little pricey for lunch. I'll definitely be back!
Just fantastic. Had the pleasure of going here for my first time prior to seeing a play at the Park Theatre. Though half my table showed up late to the reservation the service was fantastic - I apologize again by the way I know that's frustrating! I only wish I got to sample more of my friends dishes but I had the pickerel it was delicious so were the burgers and from what I could see everything looked amazing. Its nice to see the gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options! Wish you had a little more wine selection but overall great. I really enjoyed the borscht too. I wish I remembered our serves name but she was also fantastic.
Fantastic!. The food here was a homerun! Had the Greek Burger & Fries and loved how fresh and flavourful the food was! It may be a touch pricier than the stadard menu you'd find at a chain restaurant, but it's worth it for the quality you get. A+
The only thing I have had here is the oak wood burger and I believe it is the best in the city! No lie I crave it:)
Good service & nice atmosphere. Only complaint would be my pasta was a little cold & missing a few ingredients listed on the menu, and also my friends steak was overdone. The prices are also a bit high for what you get, but the food is pretty tasty. Would come back for another try
Friendly service, lots of gluten free options. I was pleasantly surprised by the good service and the amount of gluten free options. I plan on going back and checking out some of the gluten free desserts.
The California Burger was amazing. The beef patty was a generous portion size and a delicious homemade patty. I really enjoyed the flavour of the goat cheese and roasted red pepper. Guacamole was good, the flavour didn't stand out in the burger, perhaps overpowered by the cheese. Loved this burger. Would definitely order again.
Love this place!. One of my favorite breakfast joints in the city! Always great food and awesome service!
Decent food, but not as amazing as rated. I went to the Oakwood yesterday for dinner. Our server was pleasant, attentive and answered many questions about the menu. The portion size of the grilled salmon was a little small for the price, especially compared to the smothered chicken that came with two breasts. The burgers are the right price for the portion and were very filling. The borsht was flavorful, the yam fries were great, the alfredo fries were just okay, and the potato salad didn't taste as homemade as I hoped they would. I was expecting the food to be a little better based on the high rating on Urbanspoon and the descriptions that made it sound like it would be more "homey" tasting, but I found it mediocre or similar to going to a chain family restaurant like Perkins or Swiss Chalet. I'd still be interested in coming back to try their breakfast menu.
I came back to try some of their breakfast menu, with my friend and I both getting eggs benedict (gluten-free option with double bacon for her, guacamole/tomato/goat cheese for me). The eggs benedict were very good, with our eggs perfectly poached to our choosing. My only complaint is that my friend's gluten-free option for $1 extra was just a piece of toast and not a gluten-free English muffin. Hers looked less appetizing than mine because of the gluten-free toast.
Oh The Oakwood. I went here with my sister a few months ago and it is now our family restaurant. Whenever my father comes into town we take him here, they have an extensive 55 plus menu and he really enjoys that. I am addicted to the Alfredo fries they are to die for. I am a person who is not a big fan of meat but I actually ordered the smothered steak and it was the prefect portion size. I've had breakfast which is just delicious . All the bennies are delectable and the reuben burger is the best burger I've had in a long time. They have fresh soups and if the borsht is on the menu I highly suggest you have it. YUM. I love that you can order a glass, 1/2 litter or full litter of chocolate milk and their ice tea is homemade and bottomless. My sister and I love the fried pickles, they're home made. Also get the Mississippi pie, that is my favourite dessert in the city now, also home made! The decor is modern and the nephews that took over it from their aunt ( I believe ) have really made the place very special. They have opened up another side to the dining room with 6 or 8 new tables and the decor flows very well from the old side to the new. The staff really enjoy their jobs and it comes through in their attitude and the great service. No one wants to be waited on my someone who hates their job. We go so often a couple of the servers recognize us and we are always greeted with a smile. I give this place 9/10. A 9 only because the parking sorta sucks but the food is a hard 10! So go on Winnipegers, the Oakwood is where it's at!
I'm a regular. I've been a regular for a few years now, and for the past year and a half I was unable to go due to a temporary job relocation. Went there last week finally and had a wonderful meal. Since my last visit it appears that the menu has expanded a bit - I haven't tried it though because I just cannot get past the burger and fry/borscht combinations, they get me every single time. Staff has always been friendly, fast and "get it". Keep it up guys!
Tastes Like Home. My fiancee and I moved into the Fort Rouge neighbourhood last year. Prior to, we never really ventured into this area of town (likely because it often got overshadowed by the main Osborne strip).
After chatting with our friends and neighbours about the best south Osborne eats, The Oakwood Cafe seemed to become a reoccurring recommendation. As general food enthusiasts, we had to validate their arguments (after all, the restaurant was only three blocks away).
Since our move last year, we've made our way to The Oakwood at least a couple dozen times. We also had the pleasure of watching it transform from humble diner-esque decor to a more sophisticated chic cafe.
Aesthetics aside, the food, service and experience have never disappointed. No matter what menu item piqued our curiosity, The Oakwood never failed to deliver. Everything tastes fresh, flavourful and homemade.
If you're asking for a recommendation, I'd dare suggest the Pulled Pork Benedict. If you're heading there for lunch or dinner, I would also strongly suggest trying their signature beet borscht soup or alfredo fries as a side with whatever dish you decide on.
If you're a fan of living creatures, they also have a fairly large selection of vegan eats. And yes, if you're wondering, they accommodate those looking for a gluten-free meal.
Overall, I would easily admit The Oakwood is my top food stop in the neighbourhood based on price, quality, selection and service.
Delicious homemade food. Their gourmet hamburgers are the best! I try a different one every visit, and after trying half on the list, I have yet to be disappointed. Highly recommended, but reserve your table ahead of time...this place is almost always busy! A good sign for sure!
Not what I expected. My fiance has always told me how amazing the burgers were at the oakwood. Even though I've lived in this area my whole life I've never had the opportunity to go try them. This morning we decided to go there for breakfast with my sister. We called at 1045 to see how busy they were and asked if we could make a reservation for 1130. They said we could but we may have to wait a bit when we got there. When we showed up there were a few people in front of us waiting. The hostess and manager apologized profusely for the wait and when a table came open they went to seat us immediately. We asked if they could seat a group of elderly people first as they had been waiting longer than us and we were in no rush. They were immensely grateful and couldn't thank us enough. To the staff and manager who worked today; we are immensely grateful for your hospitality and graciousness, it meant the world to us. We will definitely be back, if not only for the amazing food then definitely for the amazing staff!
Went for breakfast on a Sunday morning; first time diners at Oakwood. Friendly service, great food & portion, totally fair prices. Looking forward to "next time". Keep up the good hard work!
First time tonight ... I'm in the industry so I know good quality food , and this is right up there ... Had the Reuben burger and Greek fries , other four in my party had steak , chicken parm and BBQ burger .. Everyone was happy with their meals ... Service was good ... Only thing I think is a little weird is that the pop cans come to the table already opened .. Anyway , new fav place
Quickly becoming one of my faves. Always happy with the good choices. Being a vegetarian there is a lot of options for me. Plus the service is amazing . I usually go for breakfast or lunch and each time have had the same server (shorter dirty blond hair she has been there a while now) and she is always amazing. They are quick. Friendly and it is always overall just a good experience!
Neighbourhood Gem. I was taken to the Oakwood for my birthday by a friend who used to live in the neighbourhood, and though she no longer lives nearby, she returns to dine there regularly. The food was good, generous, and affordable. It was obvious that many of the diners were regulars. I have returned a number of times and each time enjoyed my meal very much. I am pleased to hear that they have enlarged their space because every time I've been there it has been crowded.
Arlene turns 76!. We recently celebrated my mother in laws birthday at the newly renovated Oakwood Bistro Restaurant Cafe. We have been regular customers for more than 5 years and have never left dissatisfied! Last night was no exception! Our party of 20 was a last minute reservation and Peter and his team went above and beyond to make it a very special night for our whole family. The tables were decorated, the menu choice place mats were customized with moms name, and a Birthday Girl badge was provided ;) Service level was top shelf, all you can eat ribs delish, steak/shrimp done to a perfect medium rare, Fettuccini Alfredo creamy and tasty! I would highly recommend The Oakwood for your intimate or full group dining. Best advice is reserve!!! They are always busy.
Excellent. Had a lovely dining experience on a Saturday night. Delicious Potato and Bacon soup; piping hot to the table. All you can eat Ribs are delicious--fall off the bone goodness. Side dishes were tasty as well. Fantastic service from serving staff and owner. Will be back!
Still The Best Place In Town. The Oakwood is one of those rare places. You know, the kind of place that's friendly, warm, inviting and where you're never disappointed with the experience. It's a special place and I'm happy to say that my family and I have been coming to The Oakwood for almost 20 years. Congratulations on your new look. We love the exceptional quality of your food and appreciate all of the care you take to make sure everything is just right. Cheers!
Caught in the middle on this one.. Extremely busy Sunday evening.
Ambiance - 8
Food quality - 7
Service - 6 (likely because the place was packed)
Plating - 9
Five of us came for a 6:30 reservation, the place closes at 8:00 it was packed. Not a seat in the house!
This fact along with an almost 90% rating, and few good things from a few diners who had eaten there meant it was a must to at least try. I had a sandwich and fries that were nothing short of GREAT!, A few of my compadrez had various burgers. Both excellent, except for a bit of wrapper found in one of them. One had the pork special and could not stop raving about it all evening. The other had the pasta carbonara which was certainly not anything like a traditional carbonara.
To my knowledge, green peppers and cheesy type alfredo are not a part of a carbonara, but c'est la vie. Needless to say extremely disappointing.
The soups however were outstanding, piping hot, tasty, not too salted, and nothing to disguise the homemade quality.
So where does this leave us?
Take out the piece of wrapper, and the not so traditional pasta, and we would have had a definite winner.
For any of you pasta pallets out there, the carbonara with any form of pasta would be a PASS.
The fries, excellent, the sandwiches well prepared, and that as they say... is that.
Good food, good service.. See title for full review.
Always Awesome. Have been a "regular" at The Oakwood for years and have always had superb service and food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner (love All You Can Eat Rib nights) offer a multitude of choices. All food tastes like it was home cooked and there's something for all tastes. Appreciate the gluten free and veggie choices. The Oakwood obviously works overtime in pleasing their customers and keeping them coming back for more.
Amazing food and a wonderful atmosphere. Had the brisket beef dip with fries and pancakes. The brisket was unbelievable and the au jus was delicious. Fries were cooked perfectly and didn’t have that gross starchy taste. Pancakes were tasty too and very filling. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Would highly recommend this place for a date for its quiet atmosphere
Love this little diner. The food is pretty good and large portions. I've always had super friendly and helpful wait staff. I typically dine in for breakfast and lunch. They do have a feezer where you can purchase frozen meals for home, as well as some hot sauce. It has somewhat of a British flair to the menu which is unique
We met a friend here for breakfast. Our friend had the bacon and peach pancakes which sounds different but he said it was delicious. Salty and sweet together. I had the tortilla with scrambled eggs, avocado and salsa. It also comes with a side of potatoes. This was so good! Even though the sever was busy, she kept up with the coffee and asked if we needed any thing further. Prices are good. Portions are generous. We didn’t need a reservation as we were there very early but as time progressed the restaurant filled up and people were waiting for a table.
Great place for breakfast/brunch! A few unique dishes as well as the normal fare and great prices for the quality you get.
I haven't tried their lunch or dinners yet, but if someone mentions "brunch" - this is one of the first places that springs to my mind.
Picked up their Crown and Coke burger for Burger week along with a side of borscht. The soup was great as always, and the burger was probably one of the beefiest burgers I’ve ever had, with what I believe was both a beef patty and a slice of super tender roast beef. Top notch.
Always excellent, always affordable, and always packed with local goodness! Whether it's the local beers or the local hot sauces you have with your meal you'll always have a lovely time at the Oakwood Cafe.
(And they have Old Speckled Hen, which isn't local, but is one of my favourites)
I’ve been to the Oakwood quite a few times and its a great casual spot for anytime breakfast or brunch. Servers are good and friendly. I had the cauliflower pakora burger last time - sounds odd but it was a pretty delicious vegetarian option - and the borsht. Their portions are very generous. My only comment about the lunch menu is it would be a nice option to get a great big bowl of that yummy borscht on its own (or maybe with a slice of toast) without the a big sandwich on the side - for a lighter option.
