Excellent experience from start to finish. We sat ourselves and had a waitress attend to us very quickly. The coffee was excellent.
We shared the grilled cinnamon bun to start and it was excellent, crispy on one side and chewy on the other.
I ordered the the smoked farmers sausage and eggs. Everything was cooked exactly right, the texture of the hash browns were a bit off putting at first but once I stopped expecting crunch they were delicious. The toast was perfectly toasted which is hard to find sometimes but it definitely matters. My boyfriend got the day breaker and he too was very pleased. He said “it was more than enough food” which is his bar for success at a restaurant.
Bonus points do the house made hot sauce.
Will definitely be back to try the Perogies.
I've been here a few times for lunch and so has my husband. We both love it! There are lots of items on the menu that are familiar yet the recipes make them brand new! Good comfort food that is cooked perfectly. I love the perogies! The service is friendly, but can be a bit slow. Good place to stop in for a work lunch or to have breakfast on the weekend. Their menu has lots of meal choices.
Went here for lunch. Very friendly staff and very yummy food! I ordered chicken finger plate with a choice of fries as a side. Food tasted very fresh and the fries were delicious.
I have been meaning to check out this restaurant for at least a year and I am so happy that I finally have!
the food was delicious and made exactly how we asked. not to mention it didn't take long to receive our breakfasts(and side of pancakes).
even better than the food was the SERVICE! wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! so attentive and helpful and sweet!
this is now one of my favorite places to go. must try their lunch items soon!
I love to come here for breakfast. If you arrive between 7 and 9 am, they serve breakfast specials for less than $6. The portion is smaller than their regular menu breakfasts which will fill you up for sure. I can never finish a breakfast from their regular menu.
They serve a Vietnamese coffee for $4. I don't recommend it. It's only the size of a coffee cup and gets cold faster than their regular coffee.
Known properly as The Don Restaurant, this place was one I visited, generally for takeout, when I worked at L.C. Taylor and Company as it’s just across Broadway and down Donald a little. I didn’t visit because of the name, because I dislike being called Don and much prefer Donald as you might guess from the blog title.
A gem of downtown Winnipeg, and likely the only Mennonite diner in the city. If you like proper Mennonite food, try the Prairie Sunrise with delicious homemade perogies, cream gravy, eggs and farmer sausage. I've always had great service and great food no matter the day or time.
Love this place. Second time for breakfast and it was fabulous again. Service was super prompt and friendly, coffee delish and hot. Of course, the real reason you're here...the food was very good. I'd say nearly superb but my medium poached eggs were definitely soft, which luckily I don't mind. All in all its a must to try! This time around I had the Gloms Kauk breakfast (cottage cheese pattie) - great with their house hot sauce. Hubby had corned beef Eggs Ben and the meat was ridiculously tender. Tasty tasty food!
Went today for breakfast with family; breakfast servings were generous but the fruit parfait was skimpy, a lot of apples, one blackberry on top and a lot of plain yogurt..for $7.00 there should have been more fruit (apples excluded)! It was disappointing because the other breakfast plates were substaintial....My first visit so on my second....I won't order the fruit parfait!
This is my go to spot for breakfast. The service is always great and the food is delicious! The swiss mountain omelette is my favourite with a side of pizza perogies.
i stopped by here for breakfast on friday, i had the corned beef eggs benedict and my mom had the breakfast with a seasoned cottage cheese patty, we both really enjoyed our breakfast and liked how many options they had. will be going back for sure.
Great place for breaky within walking distance from everything downtown. We stay at Bestwestern Charter House quite often and The Don is less than a 60 second walk! They make fresh fruit smoothies and offer a gluten free farmer sausage that is pretty good. Service was great, food was good, coffee was good, decor is nothing fancy. But comfortable.
Best!. Our favourite breakfast spot hands down. The servers are always friendly and the food comes out super fast! They recently added Thai Iced Tea and it was delicious. Love this place to bits!
Don't put too much stock in the terrible reviews on here.. I just moved back downtown and I was looking for a breakfast place close by. I was almost scared off by all the scathing reviews of The Don, but I'm glad I ignored them! The place is cute inside, the service was fine, and they have a large breakfast menu with some unique items on it. I had the prairie sunrise and was impressed with the perogies and farmer sausage.
I'll probably come back here whenever I want to go for breakfast close to home.
Great Breakfast. This place has great food, and a really great location to match. The patio is nice in the summer. Service is usually pretty good, but I went on the weekend and the server treated my table like crap for no reason.
Update: The owner contacted me, concerned over the bad service review here. She apologized in-person the next time we went. Since then it has been nothing but great experiences at The Don!
Always Good Food. My friends and I work downtown, and this is always a favourite to go to. The "breakfast for lunch" is awesome - try their swiss bacon benedict with fries - delicious! Gravy on the side is a good choice as well. I've tried other things on their menu, and haven't been disappointed yet.
Great brunch!. The restaurant is clean and the food is wonderful. You can't go wrong ordering breakfast or lunch items. The perogies have a perfect balance of cheese and potato.
Whammy!. Whenever I'm in town I stay at the Best Western Charter House. They have horrible breakfast, so today we sent out to find a good spot. The Don turns out to be a 30 second walk away and cranks out a mean breakfast.
I'll catch brekky there every time I'm back.
Really good food, one of the best breakfast menus I've run across, and some of the best coffee as well. food arrives pretty quick after you order, but you don't feel like your getting rushed out the door afterwards.
It's got that old diner charm and seems to habitually populated by regulars (which is always a good sign) and it's worth mentioning the staff is really quick with the coffee refills.
I haven't had time to explore the lunch/dinner sides of the menu yet, but I hear great things so far and plan to make an excursion in the near future.
Awesome bacon and eggs and the omelets are even better. try the smoothies or freshly squeezed lemonade.
Fantastic breakfast and great location !!
Fast service (Sunday morn 11am)...
- dirty dishes (food bits on my water glass)
- found a lemon seed at the bottom of coffee mug (?!)
Typical Breakfast joint without Glam or Glitz. A to be expected breakfast menu that gives patrons exactly what they walk in for. Eggs, bacon, watered down coffee, omelettes and a surprising variety of eggs benedict. It would seem very little time and money is put into interior design and up keep, but you can't go wrong with Don's if standard breakfast fare is on your mind. Hidden in the back is a cool dining area that fully realizes the seedy greasy spoon vibe. Sneak back there for an all encompassing downtown diner experience. I'm sure they serve lunch but who cares. It's not for that.
Mennonite Specialties. Had breakfast for lunch at the Don. The layout of the restaurant is a bit odd, with a front room and back room, and there's not much to say about the decor, but service was warm. I had the Gloms Kuak, which is a fried cottage cheese patty with lots of dill. I really enjoyed it and will certainly have it again. It came with eggs, hashbrowns and toast for $9.50. This patty is also available as a sandwich--the Don burger.
Coming to Winnipeg from up north. The don restaraunt was a blessing to eat at! I give it 5 stars for the all around awesome service and food! Merry Christmas!!!
Excellent breakfast, with outstanding service from Jasmine. Needs to open earlier on weekends, but otherwise great! Get here now
Always delicious. This is my favourite breakfast place in Winnipeg! After moving into the area, I've been there several times. It's a busy place at lunch time but I've always been able to get a table. There's also outdoor seating for when it's nice out. Highlights: good coffee (prompt refills), delicious smoothies, and hearty breakfasts. In a part of town that tends to be vacated on weekends, we're lucky to have such a reliable and delicious breakfast joint.
The Don, the one and only. Good food, good selection, reasonably priced and a funky vibe, this is the Don. I used to frequant the Don on many occasions when I lived in the area and fell in love. I literally fell in love at the Don, this is were my husband and I first started hanging out, so I am a little biased. We recently went to the Don and the food was still good, reasonably priced and it the place still had it's funky vibe. Congrats to the Don for keeping it real all these years. Cheers!
I've been going to this spots of a couple of years now and it's been my go-to since living in downtown winnipeg. They definitely have some great classics, like the Montreal chicken burger. Crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. When I used to come here with a group of 4-5 more often then not we would be ordering full breakfast, burger and a side of cottage cheese perogies! If you ever come here please try the cottage cheese perogies, pan fried. Recently, this place has made some drastic changes. Some good and some not so good. I'm the type to stick with the same waitress that has served me before, but sadly their life does not revolve around your breakfast schedule. I know the new waitresses that are currently employed their now do their best to make sure you have an enjoyable experience, but there seems to be one person that may need a bit more extra training. We sat down to a dirty table, really not caring because eventually they will get around to quickly wiping it off for us. This waitress acknowledged the dirty table and promised to wipe it off after taking our order. The restaurant wasn't busy, but our waters came with our meals. Our table wasn't wiped, but she dropped the food off anyways. While eating our meal the waitress didn't come back to check for waters or condiments, I had to ask her twice for waters alone. I will always go for the don for breakfast, but the quality of service and portion of meals will never be the same as two years ago.

An all around great breakfast place.
Great Breaky. The breakfast was DELISH!!!!! the service was OUTSTANDING!!!
Good and cheap!. Breakfast is fantastic here, I've spent so many hung over Sunday mornings devouring omlettes and eggs benedicts here with their hommade hash browns. The borscht they serve every lunch hour reminds me of my Oma and puts a smile on my face every time. The staff are great too - always friendly and eager to joke around!
Mmmm breakfast. I love their breakfasts. They're always busy, so you have to be patient, but the food is worth it.
Good coffee too. Though not always the best service, it's worth it.
I visited this restaurant with the introduction of a friend. I visited when there were many customers and waited for a while, but I was able to eat delicious food.
The server were friendly and busy, but the food was delicious. The smoothie was also fresh and sweet. I would like to visit with my family next time.
I went to The Don Restaurant with my friend. First, the service was so good. They always laughed. Also, the food was very clean and the taste was fantastic. The taste of all foods was soft and light. I want to visit again with my parents. 😊
We have been frequenting The Don for six years and have enjoyed our breakfasts every time. What brought me back the first time is there choice of eggs. Nice dark yolks (free range) and butcher cut bacon. If you like local classics I'd give the cabbage borscht a go. I'd have given 5 stars but the owners have been struggling with finding good servers due to the recent situation. But the ever lovely Kori (owner) made it right when there was an issue.
Such a classic, homemade feeling kinda place. It never changes and that’s great. In the colder months, order the cabbage borscht!!
Love this place! The staff are always nice, and considering how busy they can get, they're good at keeping things moving along, refilling your coffee, clearing tables quickly for the next guests. My favourite is the Gloms Kuak - just outstanding. I could eat this every morning. They're good at making adjustments, too - they always make my bacon extra crispy :)
