Review The Mitchell Block Restaurant - Winnipeg

Such a cozy restaurant. Their vegetarian lasagna was delicious, & I never had a pizza this good in life! Thanks to their amazing chefs for providing the best experience. The server was awesome as well.

Cool little place, nice vibe. Wait staff was really nice, food was really good, BEST chicken parm sandwich I’ve ever had! Only downside was it was a little pricey, especially the cocktails (still good though). Definitely recommend, based on quality of food

Wow! We were blown away by the service. We had reservation on Valentine’s Day and it was also our first time dining here. The service was truly amazing, our server was so sweet and kind. The food was hands-down delicious, the pizza was to die for! It’s such a cute and cosy restaurant, everything was made with love. We will definitely be returning! I hope this helps!

Great everything! The chicken liver mouse is unreal. Sean, the chef is on point. I had the beef, which was cooked perfectly. It tasted like beef but it was the mushroom risotto that put it over the top. If you're a pasta lover, they make their own in house. Honestly didn't even consider dining out for French cuisine but I was blown away. Can't forget the stellar service! Even with hundreds of choices in Winnipeg, this will be a return visit!

We went upstairs to their lounge area. It is a beautiful space. One of my friends ended up talking to the chef who seemed very friendly. The food was all good. Presentation of desserts is very beautiful. Thursday nights are now half price oyster night (they used to be buck a shuck). I was a bit confused as most of my friends got special treatment, (extra oysters or extra appetizer) but for some reason they did not do anything for me. We had pointed out the disparity between the size of the oysters (the first set being extra large, the others being very small in comparison, but since we didn't share, it just ended up as some got a better deal). Their customer service isn't consistent.

Spent our 5 year anniversary dinner here. Great service and a neat restaurant! We had the pasta special for the day and it did not disappoint! It was lamb & beef meatballs spaghetti and was amazing. The pasta is home made and amazing. Really recommend their pasta dishes. I also go a salad before dinner and it was large and really good. We didn't care that much for the Cheesecake ourselves. Overall, had a wonderful experience and would go back.

Located in the exchange district. This restaurant has a cozy and relaxing environment. To celebrate a party or just to enjoy each ones company. Service was most excellent, very helpful and very polite. Food was aesthetically pleasing and tasted so good. Have been to this restaurant a couple of times already and enjoyed it each time. If you havent been here yet, its a really nice place to treat yourself and loved ones.

A quaint, delicate setting with friendly staff and amazing presentation with their dishes. The menu has great variety and the wine selection is quite nice for pairings with Italian food. The chicken breast (picture) is an amazing dish!

We really enjoyed our evening at Mitchell Block this evening. We found the meal to be exceptional yet the price was so reasonable. We also received attentive service from Jasmine who was knowledgeable and very charming.. We will definitely return to this restaurant!

We had dinner last evening. Staff was prompt & friendly. Our server was attentive polite service. I had ordered an entree from their specials of the day. It was a tortellini dish I felt that was average. The sauce with mushrooms was tasty but I understood on a bed of mashed parsnip. I hardly saw or tasted it & the texture of pasta was very tough. Might have been el Dante but too hard not cooked enough. For $27.00 not worth the price too expensive as you get nothing else but bread.

An outstanding evening!! Food, service, staff , top shelf!!!

BEST Caesar salad I've had in awhile. Portions were perfect. Each dish was absolutely delicious. Service was great. We can't wait to go back!

The Mitchell Block is now one of my favourite restaurants in the City after coming here for my very first time this weekend for my birthday celebration. The ambient, drinks, food and service were excellent overall.

The Mitchell Block is located in the Exchange in downtown. The restaurant is split into two levels: the dining area, which is located on the main floor and the lounge, which is on the second floor.

Mitchell Block is quite elegant on the inside. The long narrow dining area and its modern setting reminded me of restaurants that you would find in New York City.

Mitchell Block has a great selection for drinks. I had the Por Favor Mio Amore cocktail (el jimadore blanco, aperol, lemon, honey simple syrup, and rosemary oil), which was very similar to a fruity margaretta but it was significantly better. It was served with a rosemary sprig. Not only it was very tasty, it was very well-presented.

Bread was complimentary to start. For entrée, we had the Ravioli (which was stuffed pork sausage, fennel, ricotta cheese with red wine reduction sauce, topped with pistachio and ricotta), Atlantic Salmon, (which was served with roasted cauliflower, sesame seeds, preserved lemon, brown butter-lemon emulsion, eggplant caponata, puffed quinoa) and Cioppino (Shrimp, mussels, clams, chopped fish, fennel, spicy saffron broth, grilled bread). The food was excellent! The portion of the ravioli was not huge but the Cioppino was of great value.

For dessert, we had the Ice Wine and the Ricotta Beignet (with whey caramel, lemon curd and raspberry). Those desserts were such a perfect way to end off the night.

We were very pleased with the food, drinks, ambient and service overall! We will definitely come back again on a special occasion, and would love to check out the beautiful lounge on the second floor one day!

Dined here for a business continuing education evening and was surprised on the excellent service. We had a party of about 15 with 1 server, and he was just on top of things. May I add that we were on the second floor and food was not delayed whatsoever. The food was delicious, had the Caesar salad, salmon and blueberry cheesecake. The salmon dish had roasted quinoa and veggies, the combination was delicious. definitely will come back for dinner with family or friends. Highly recommend for group events

The Mitchell Block has a cozy little dining room in the exchange district. My partner and I came to try the morel special specifically but the rest did not disappoint either. The meal started with foccasia with a jalapeño butter. The morel special appetizer entailed fresh morels, wild asparagus and a poached egg on toast. It was amazing, my only complaint that the toast was a bit burnt. We shared the fettuccini with shrimp and chorizo. I had no complaints there you can really tell the difference when pasta is homemade. Service was superb and we will definitely be back.

Excellent homemade pasta. The smoked salmon pasta special had surprising but delicious orange flavour. The strawberry cheesecake with pistachio was delightful. Everything looked AND tasted beautiful. Perfect for a romantic date!

Bison tartare and the crispy Brussels sprouts were amazing! Main dishes were good too, but overshadowed by the appetizers. Good atmosphere, great service, delicious food!

Finally checked this place out last night! Nice little spot located in the exchange district. The service was great, very friendly staff. Not a large menu, but you can tell the work that goes in to each dish. I expected a place like this to be over priced with small portions, but that is not the case. The food is very reasonably priced for the portions. I've gone to other places that serve fresh pasta and the dishes are half the size and higher in price. I loved that they start you off with fresh baked bread, nice way to get the palette working while you decide what to order. I ended up ordering one of the pasta special's for the evening which was a deconstructed version of lasagna. The dish was delightful! Definitely come to this one with an appetite. I look forward to returning and trying more of the menu.

Wasn't able to take photos due to a business meeting but absolutely need to leave a review for this restaurant. Service was awesome, drinks were good and food was delicious. We tried the bison tartare and deep fried sprouts. Both amazing. All pasta was handmade, beef and lamb were tender. Only rated a 4 because of prices (pasta was comparable to prices of the entree).

The Mitchell Block is an delicious experience that anyone should enjoy. Taking Italian and French influences and modifying them to local ingredients showcases the skill and creativity of Chef McKay. And while the prices are on the higher side, they are on par with similar restaurants in The Exchange and well worth the price of admission given the extremely reasonable portion sizes and spectacular flavour.

So here's the deal. I like this place but every time I've been they've screwed up my order. Aside from that, great food and ambience. The burger is incredible (without onions) and the side salad tasted like it came from a garden out back. I just wish they could stop screwing up the meal.

Went for a family gathering over Xmas holidays. Very impressed!

Nice atmosphere, Great service, creative drink menu and the food exceeded my expectations. Generous portions and every-dish that came out of the kitchen was fantastic!

Pleasant Surprise. Stopped here for lunch after running an errand, so I was alone and wanting to rave about the home made pasta. I had fettucine with chorizo, prawns, spinach, roasted corn and peppers in saffron cream sauce. The prawns were cooked to perfection - so often they are over-done. The chorizo was spicy and interesting. All in all the dish?...Delectable... The caesar salad was good, not spectacular but I've been in love with my recipe for over 20 years so it's always hard to beat that. Focaccia bread was fresh and tasty and the house made butter concoction to die for. The menu is small but interesting, and compliments and befits this small but classy space.

Caution! The good reviews seem to be for the restaurant. Don't go to the lounge. Awful!

My Husband & I went for his birthday dinner to the Mitchell Block. Amazing, from the service and ambience it was a fabulous meal. We started with the calamari which was tender & so tasty, what really made it stand out was the dipping sauce!!. We decided to have the English as a cocktail on suggestion of the waiter and it didn't disappoint best drink by far..the mix
Of cucumber and basil make the drink. We both decided on the pasta my husband had the feature which was ink squid pasta with clams, fish, cuttle fish..this dish was a stand out, should be on the menu..we can definitely say ..an amazing restaurant experience we will be back.

Aside from the wait for having our order taken, the atmosphere and food were superb! Calamari is to die for

LOUNGE BLARF. They were unable to accommodate with reservations our party of 12 in the restaurant so we were placed in the lounge. Expecting food we were only allowed to order from the lounge menu which has appetizers only, they were small and very over priced for what it was. We had an $11 cocktail that came in a short glass? It was gross. Not to mention the waiter manhandled the tops of the glasses where we have to place our mouths. The longest wait we had was for our charcuterie plate, lol We figured they probably had to wait in line at Sobeys when they were out buying our meat and cheese. We appreciated the gesture of free spring rolls for our wait, but they were super salty, almost inedible. We had dirty water glasses as well. We left broke and hungry. Wish I could of tried the restaurant, but now I will not bother, ever.

First visit - Nothing but good things. I was taken out for lunch to The Mitchell Block by a business associate.

Our server, Mike, was great from start to finish.

I had the burger, which was fresh, juicy, and really tasty. The home-smoked bacon was excellent. The side salad was fresh and crispy, with a nice light dressing. I'm personally not a fan of fruit in salads, so I could have done without the cranberries, but that's just a personal preference.

My colleague loved his chickpea soup, as well as his linguine with prawns.

Portions were perfect for lunch.

I'll be back.

A wonderful experience. Made our first trip to The Mitchell Block last night. Bison carpaccio was AMAZING appy. I had the bacon wrapped pork with bacon tomato jelly. It was awesome. GF had the special. Grilled seabass. She loved it. Service was super efficient and friendly. Definitely an A list Winnipeg restaurant.

Had dinner here on Jan 24/15. The food was great. Spaghetti and meatballs(special of the day),calamari was perfect. Service was exceptional. Not pushy or hovering but attentive.

Sigh of relief .... I was initially saddened to hear that Tre Visi on McDermot was no more, but thought I'd give The Mitchell Block a try, and I was not disappointed. As hard as it was to accomplish, I think the menu at The Mitchell Block is improved over Tre Visi, and the service is just a tad more relaxed than the old place.

The food was excellent and the service was competent - present but not over bearing: they kept an eye on us without hovering. I detest hovering waiters ... ;-)

Superlative food within a stones throw of the office and 20 minutes from anywhere in Winnipeg.

I'll be back.

Amazing experience!!!!!!. What a fantastic place. Dinner was amazing. We had a group of 6 and everyone LOVED it. Our only complaint......we were stuffed!!!! Can't wait to go back.

AMAZING. Went to Mitchell Block on Saturday for a nice supper. The food was amazing. The service was amazing. The atmosphere was amazing. I would highly recommend going to the restaurant for a fine dining experience and a cocktail in the lounge to finish off the evening!

Fetticini with chorizo, prawns and saffron cream sauce. Mentioned that we were sharing the pasta dish and they kindly served it in separate plates. Creamy, deliciousness. Fresh noodles FTW

Who is eating there? Supermodels?. Hasn't anyone noticed that the lunch portions are miniscule?
Intrepid Diner
Good Food in a Fine Atmosphere. I went for a pre-theatre dinner with some friends and found my overall experience to be rather enjoyable. The space is fairly narrow and there aren't a lot of tables. The restaurant was full the night I went but noise levels were not much of a concern. We were all able to hear the conversation at our table and not the other diners. The space is nicely appointed and is well lit.

The server was very knowledgeable and friendly. We advised her that we had time constraints in order to make the show and we enjoyed our meal with plenty of time to spare. The water glasses were quickly refilled and our server was attentive, but never hovered.

The menu isn't extensive. About half of the entrees are pasta dishes. Prices are reasonable. Most entrees fall in the $20-$30 range. The portions are not huge, but they are adequate. The focaccia bread that was served was fresh, slightly dense and as someone else pointed out in their review, spongy. I really enjoyed it. I tried the bacon wrapped pork tenderloin. It is served with apple slices, candied walnuts and a crunchy spatzle type noodle. The pork was tender and I found the entrée very tasty. The crispy noodles mixed with the candied walnuts were a great complement of texture and taste.

I would not hesitate to return

Fine Meal but not Extraordinary. Went there this week. Calamari excellent and pasta was good. Fettuccini was great and gnocchi were ok, I felt overcooked and not a fan of frozen peas, but ok . Service attentive and pleasant. However being charged for second basket of bread was unimpressive especially with a bill north of $200. We would return if in the area, but nothing convinced us to go far out of our way for additional visits.

Nice meal with good service. I was sad to hear when the original Tre Visi closed in the Exchange (not a fan of the 2.0 version on stafford and grovenor). Anyhow, this place has taken over the main dining room and former sensi lounge on the second floor. The decor has changed enough to feel like a new place but it's not a dramatic change. The menu has some local inspirations but there's definitely some international flair - things like bison carpaccio or mussels and fries in a red curry cream sauce or duck confit over gomae style soba noodles. It's a good sized menu for a small restaurant with 7 starters $5-$15, 4 different house made pasta dishes $20 and 6 entrees $24-$29. The mains have one option of each protein type available - pork, beef, chicken, fish, seafood and duck.

Service was very knowledgeable and friendly. The ambiance still has a nice vibe where couples can enjoy dinner and larger groups can also dine and have a conversation.

They still serve complimentary foccacia which were very fluffy and delicious.

Tried the potato gnocchi ($21) ham, sauteed mushrooms, green peas in a dill creme sauce. The gnocchi is apparently the same recipe as Tre Visi (which I loved) as the current chef ran Tre Visi for a year before transitioning over to this restaurant. Unfortunately, it was not the pillowy soft gnocchi as I had loved though it was an ok version. I'd skip this one next time since I don't like creme sauces anyways. This dish is a bit heavy to have as one so it's a good one to share.

The roast chicken with mission figs, goat cheese, demi glace, mashed potatoes and veggies ($24) was a pretty hearty dish. It was enjoyable and pretty straightforward in terms of taste and flavour.

Had a great pear and ginger cocktail as well.

Overall, I'd go back to this place as service was good, price and portion were all fair and the atmosphere was really nice. It feels like a non-Italian version of Tre Visi with a more laid back feel. Also, love to check out their lounge upstairs which serves all their starters up there.

Loved Every Bite. Went for the first time the other day and loved every second. The restaurant itself was beautifully redone and the service was lovely. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. NOT TO MENTION THE FOOD!!!! We had a wagyu beef appetizer special that was absolutely phenomenal and house made pastas that were beyond wonderful. My husband and I can't wait to come back and try the new specials and the rest of the menu! Best of luck Mitchell Block, you are the new favorite most definitely!

The Gnocchi was soft, juicy, flavourful and very satisfying. Every bit was bliss.

Delish!. Went there for lunch today. Nice, relaxed atmosphere and our waiter was friendly and attentive. Started with the focaccia bread with curry butter, the bread was light and spongy and the butter was nice, not overpowering. Next came the mixed greens salad, which was quite flavourful, my only complaint was that the salad had too much dressing on it, resulting in a pool of oil at the bottom. For the entree I ordered the Fettucine with chorizo, prawns and spinach in a saffrone cream sauce and it was to die for!! I would order it again in a heartbeat!
