East India Company, is an Indian restaurant located in Winnipeg’s Downtown. The restaurant is run by the Mehra family who have been part of the Winnipeg restaurant scene for close to 50 years. In addition to their Winnipeg location, they operate two restaurants in Ottawa. They are also a family actively involved in promoting the well-being of the city as a whole.
I’ve only ever been here for their buffet and have never been disappointed. The food is super tasty and always fresh. My favourite dish is the paneer with spinach. The butter chicken is really really good. They have really great desserts as well and the naan bread is super delicious. I also love going here because of the decor of the restaurant.
Best Indian food in the city! Make sure if you're coming here you come hungry! Be sure to leave a little bit of room for dessert. The scallops and veggie korma are so so good. The na'an isn't included which is my only complaint. Otherwise, excellent.
A very good place to have the east Indian cuisine. We had a lunch buffet and spread was amazing. Every item served was delicious in its own way.
There was a huge variety of salads, pickles and sauces. The Veg Menu lists.. Veg pulav, Rice, Chana Masala, Navratna Korma (simply too rich in taste), Palak Paneer, Punjabi Kadhi, Dal Makhni.
Next came the Non-veg Menu.. Spicy chicken wings.. ( actually mildly spiced and super tasty wings in Indian flavours), spinach Chicken, Chicken Tandoori, chicken 65, butter Chicken, Beef Kheema, Mutton curry..
The Naan was complimentary with Mango Lassi to sip along.
There was a good variety of Desserts too each one as good as the next..
Mango kulfi, Ras Malai, Moong Dal Halva, Hot super soft Gulab Jamun, Carrot Halva Mango Mousse and Ice cream.
All in all a super filling and amazing treat.
The buffet is really good however i wish they would change the menu once or twice in a week, one of the things to remember that on a Sunday buffet they give you a mango lassi and nan as a complimentary however if you would like a Nan or Bread during weekdays you will be charged for the same which i felt was a little on the negative side.
Overall the food quality is good.
It is impossible to write a negative review of the lunch buffet. It rivals the finest anywhere. The food is hot and fresh, the selection is immense, the property is spotless, and the price is more than reasonable.
Maintaining excellent standards over many years, their buffet has the widest selection of any Indian restaurant in the city. Standards like samosas, butter chicken, tandoori, channa masala and korma are on hand, as are less common offerings like lamb, crab and many other pleasant surprises including a good variety of vegetarian options.
Especially welcome are the little extras - watching the fresh nan get made right in front of you in a tandoor, complimentary mango lassi with your meal, a large and changing variety of desserts and excellent service.
I've been at this restaurant only once, a few weeks ago, and since I've been thinking about going there again! The food and the ambiance were great! I tried a bit of almost everything in the buffet (except meat, I'm pescetarian) and it tasted really good and wasn't too spicy. I also ordered naan bread and it was good as well. The desserts were also interesting.
If you're looking for a place that you can choose from a large variety of east Indian food, this is the place. It's a bit expensive per plate but there's something for everyone and the dishes have a varying spice range.
The staff are attentive and helpful if you have any questions. It's a good place to try if you're looking for a change. I recommend the lunch buffet.
The dinner buffet is massive, so you'll find a handful of dishes you'll enjoy. Good spice and flavour. Naan isn't included in the buffet like a lot of other places so that's a downside.
