East India Company, is an Indian restaurant located in Winnipeg’s Downtown. The restaurant is run by the Mehra family who have been part of the Winnipeg restaurant scene for close to 50 years. In addition to their Winnipeg location, they operate two restaurants in Ottawa. They are also a family actively involved in promoting the well-being of the city as a whole.
I’ve only ever been here for their buffet and have never been disappointed. The food is super tasty and always fresh. My favourite dish is the paneer with spinach. The butter chicken is really really good. They have really great desserts as well and the naan bread is super delicious. I also love going here because of the decor of the restaurant.
Best Indian food in the city! Make sure if you're coming here you come hungry! Be sure to leave a little bit of room for dessert. The scallops and veggie korma are so so good. The na'an isn't included which is my only complaint. Otherwise, excellent.
A very good place to have the east Indian cuisine. We had a lunch buffet and spread was amazing. Every item served was delicious in its own way.
There was a huge variety of salads, pickles and sauces. The Veg Menu lists.. Veg pulav, Rice, Chana Masala, Navratna Korma (simply too rich in taste), Palak Paneer, Punjabi Kadhi, Dal Makhni.
Next came the Non-veg Menu.. Spicy chicken wings.. ( actually mildly spiced and super tasty wings in Indian flavours), spinach Chicken, Chicken Tandoori, chicken 65, butter Chicken, Beef Kheema, Mutton curry..
The Naan was complimentary with Mango Lassi to sip along.
There was a good variety of Desserts too each one as good as the next..
Mango kulfi, Ras Malai, Moong Dal Halva, Hot super soft Gulab Jamun, Carrot Halva Mango Mousse and Ice cream.
All in all a super filling and amazing treat.
The buffet is really good however i wish they would change the menu once or twice in a week, one of the things to remember that on a Sunday buffet they give you a mango lassi and nan as a complimentary however if you would like a Nan or Bread during weekdays you will be charged for the same which i felt was a little on the negative side.
Overall the food quality is good.
It is impossible to write a negative review of the lunch buffet. It rivals the finest anywhere. The food is hot and fresh, the selection is immense, the property is spotless, and the price is more than reasonable.
Maintaining excellent standards over many years, their buffet has the widest selection of any Indian restaurant in the city. Standards like samosas, butter chicken, tandoori, channa masala and korma are on hand, as are less common offerings like lamb, crab and many other pleasant surprises including a good variety of vegetarian options.
Especially welcome are the little extras - watching the fresh nan get made right in front of you in a tandoor, complimentary mango lassi with your meal, a large and changing variety of desserts and excellent service.
I've been at this restaurant only once, a few weeks ago, and since I've been thinking about going there again! The food and the ambiance were great! I tried a bit of almost everything in the buffet (except meat, I'm pescetarian) and it tasted really good and wasn't too spicy. I also ordered naan bread and it was good as well. The desserts were also interesting.
If you're looking for a place that you can choose from a large variety of east Indian food, this is the place. It's a bit expensive per plate but there's something for everyone and the dishes have a varying spice range.
The staff are attentive and helpful if you have any questions. It's a good place to try if you're looking for a change. I recommend the lunch buffet.
The dinner buffet is massive, so you'll find a handful of dishes you'll enjoy. Good spice and flavour. Naan isn't included in the buffet like a lot of other places so that's a downside.
Very good place. Overwhelming a bit. So much food. Come here for lunch and you could probably just eat 1 meal a day.
Everything was delicious and there was lots to choose from.
I'll come here anytime I'm hungry.
What a fabulous evening out! We had been fortunate enough to win a multi-course meal for 6 with wine pairings at a silent auction at the WAG and recently went with family. I know their buffet is excellent and inexpensive, but after this night, I highly recommend the menu's extra gems. It takes no time to see why this restaurant has succeeded in being one of the city's best for over 40 years.
Details of our special night below:
As soon as you walk up to the restaurant, your mouth begins to water as the savoury and spicy scents waft out over the walkway. As you enter the restaurant, immediately you feel underdressed. It's lavishly decorated and much larger than it appears from outside. Deep rich browns and golds are everywhere, and the tablecloths seem pressed. The dishes are also all glazed with their personal logos and the glasses were spotless. We were seated by the front window far from the buffet which was at the back. The temperature was perfectly comfortable despite being near the door in the winter (in fact I took off my sweater). The table was preset for us and the service throughout the night was excellent. Not only were servers attentive, but the manager was a perfect host taking us all on a trip through every dish and beverage that arrived one after the other so that we could better appreciate the meal.
We were started off with a spiked mango lassi which even my mum (who doesn't drink) loved. Our appetizers were served one after the other and included cocktail samosas and pakora, skewered paneer with vegetables (made even better by the fact that their paneer is made in-house with a bio-culture that is generations old and family-bound within the restaurant), and bite-sized boneless morsels of tandoori chicken. Appropriate condiments were supplied as well as a sweet and crisp glass of Gewürztraminer to ease any heat. It was difficult to pace ourselves!!
Our mains came along and included: basmati rice, salad, palak paneer, navratan korma, butter chicken, malabar (coconut gravy) prawns, channa masala, dal makhani, and a sizzling platter of garam masala and cumin spiced chicken. Of course, we were also provided naan -- 6 kinds in fact!! Three of which were stuffed, plus one butter, one garlic, and one coconut. Two new red wines also accompanied our mains (a Bin 555 Shiraz and an excellent Gamay).
Finally for dessert, we received something hot and something cold; one large gulab jamun in individual martini glasses with ample warmed syrup, and an ice cold pot of kulfi which although I've never seen on their menu, was a fantastic surprise as it is one of my personal favourites! We were also given an aperitif -- a warmed combination of Grand Marnier and Drambuie in a snifter which had a profound effect just by inhaling the alcohol's strong vapor. Taken in short sips with the gulab jamun however was tremendous.
Downsides: Expect to pay for parking. The music may be a tad loud for conversation. My water was only refilled once so I had to steal my tablemate's. There was no raita or extra chilies provided, though in retrospect I am certain had I asked for them I would have received them.
The upsides? EVERYTHING else. The service is dedicated and the ambience is comfortable and exciting. Sachit the manager and our host and story-teller for the evening was flawless. He introduced every beverage thoughtfully with knowledge and class, and each dish's history so that we could have dinner and go on a culinary journey too. Even more importantly, the food and drink were both perfect! At first glance, each dish seems like so little but it all very quickly adds up and in fact we ended up with leftovers! As much as we love a buffet, next time we have guests from out of town, we will definitely be bringing them here for the same unique experience. (And if we don't have guests, we'll find another excuse to return.) 5/5.
Went as a business meeting, staff was excellent not in your face every 5 minutes and let us pour our own wine. Nice not trying to down the bottle on us. Owner treated us like kings and the food was excellent. I found the hotter spice in one of the containers and even though it was slightly above my heat spice palate loved the flavours and the heat. The nan was excellent the space was a little tight but thats what happens when the place is full. Price was more than fair for what we ate. Will be back soon.
Here for a late lunch, and had a friend recommend EA as best Indian in Winnipeg-- seems true. For about $15 cad for the buffet (no naan, it's extra and will fill you up for the good stuff; and drink water)--the food was flavorful, and even this late in lunch (230pm) the food looked pretty fresh. One chicken dish was a bit dry, everything else was en pointe. Multiple mini deserts-- I liked the mango mousse, the rice pudding, and the coconut fudge. Well stuffed with delicious, nutritious food at a reasonable price. Good choice for lunch if you're adventurous.
Came in around 7 and realized it was a buffet. I'm not normally a fan of buffets but being a solo diner it allows you infinitely more options to try. The place is decorated in what I can assume is a fairly authentic style and that always adds to the meal. The waiter sat me down and after recommending a tiger beer he let me know most people get a naan and just hit the buffet. So I ordered a garlic naan and headed over. The options are near endless. I'm a very adventurous eater, so my biggest challenge was deciding what not to eat. A good problem to have. The cold bar had some nice veggie dishes to get you started. Creamy cucumber salad and chickpeas with tomatoes and cilantro is what I opted to start with. As I came back with my first plate I had a beer and some warm naan bread waiting for me. The main dishes were all very good. I wont go through them all but anything in a bigger container is generally a fan favorite for a reason. I personally gravitate towards the richer spicier dishes with red meat and pair them with a paneer dish and was not disappointed. The spice level is on the lower end but you can just grab a side of chili sauce and adjust to your liking. I had a curried fish dish with a yellow curry that I did not care for but other then that I enjoyed nearly everything. I even had a dessert of rice pudding flavored with pistachios. Everything was great, service, albeit very easy to keep everyone happy at a buffet, was attentive and the food was a hit. When I went to pay I was a bit taken back that dinner for 1 with a beer was $37 plus tip, but they offer a pretty extensive buffet and I wont be eating here 3 times a week so why not? Definitely on the high end for a buffet, but to treat yourself occasionally its just fine. I know ill be back next time I'm in town.
Great Indian Buffet. Cost is not bad, especially considering for just a few bucks less you'd be eating wet-sponge "roast beef" at Aaltos. Variety is what I would expect, with over a dozen hot options. Desserts are quite tasty, and not all the gritty-and-about-as-sweet-as-cardboard options you'll find at most East Indian restaurants.
Been twice so far and both visits were great.
I would advise against getting Naan bread (additional cost) as you'll probably be too stuffed to enjoy it after waiting for it to be made.
Great selection for a buffet, including for vegetarian. Quality cuts of chicken, beef, lamb dishes with numerous vegetarian, side dishes, and cold salads/ raita and deserts .
Great value... Nice ambiance. I've always received good service.
Enjoy
Best Indian food in Winnipeg hands down, don't waste your time or money on those little restaurants around the city. Trust me, it's worth the extra money. Service is superb and the food is absolutely amazing. Tons of selection for vegetarian and non vegetarian. Only negative is that nan bread is extra and for the $, I feel it should be included in the price. Pop is also non refillable..I chose water with my meal so I don't care anyways.
Used to be better! This was my second time at the east India company... well this time the food had less flavour and was a little bit more bland. The butter chicken was good but had no heat at all... The desserts were okay I would say the best dessert was the mango mousse. Overall an okay place to have lunch or dinner if you want a lot of choices and are willing to spend a lot of money.
One of our favourite places to eat - best Indian food in the city! Sunday brunch buffet is the best. Vast selection, vegetarian options and lots of meat dishes also. Love the mango drink too. Great service every time & food is flavourful, authentic and delicious! Highly recommended.
Food was good but super expensive , located right in downtown . Not alot of options in buffet . Nicely decorated and get the feeling of being in India .
Best place for Indian food in Winnipeg I must say. Good variety of food and dessert. Gulab Jamoon were delicious.
Dal Makhni beef vidaloo and the samosas along with the garlic Naan is definitely recommend.
Went here as a second choice because the Ivory only opened at 5pm and we needed somewhere to go with a group of 10 at 415pm ish. Best decision we ever made!! The variety of food they have here compared to the ivory is amazing! They have a enormous selection of foods, enough for vegetarians too. Food tasted amazing too!! Service was also great. Will definitely be back.
The buffet is the obvious choice here. They have a wide variety of fresh, lovingly prepared options. Everything is generally well labelled. Just make sure to leave room for dessert.
I don't know why I haven't been here sooner?!
I have always heard people say great things about this restaurant, but I just never made my way downtown to try it--until this past Friday :)
All I can say is WOW. The variety, service and quality of food were unbelievable. Yes it was a bit pricey, and I probably wouldn't go every day because of that, but when I am in the mood for a top-notch Indian food experience, I will be back! :)
PS: The coconut naan bread was my FAVOURITE!
First time for dinner and we weren't disappointed. Not sure why we wasted our time reviewing the menu as the buffet was the easy choice. Reasonably priced with great tasting food. Staff all give the impression that they like being there which assists in the dining experience. Lots to choose from and I would recommend this downtown restaurant.
One of my go-to restaurants. Great for someone looking to try Indian food, as there is a lot of choices. Make sure to order the onion naan!
Everything was authentic .. the curry hits you like a wall when you walk through the door . You have now entered India.. and are in another land .. would have given it a 5 but.. the Pollock curry dish was not real crab, plus the quality of the chicken was not the best.
Went for the lunch buffet and it was totally 100% AWESOME. Super fresh food and tons & tons of it. The thing that blew me away is when paying... it was only $15.00. Holy smokes, how can they serve so much food for so cheap??? Anyway, I was so full I didn't even eat dinner that night. But, felt totally fine! Not bloated, nothing. Great place will be returning again for sure!
Have been here many times over the years and never disappointed , consistently great !
This is without a doubt the best Indian restaurant in Winnipeg and my favorite place in the city to eat. Food always tastes great and the garlic naan is to die for. The staff is always so friendly and Sach always stops by the table to say Hi. You can't go wrong stopping by here for lunch or dinner.
Good food. I now have a food baby, but the service was very slow. They were very busy so that's to be expected...
However we did order tea 3 times, all of which never actually resulted in tea coming.
Great spot, fantastic variety of dishes even for vegetarians/pescatarians. I would recommend.
Host/proprietor was very gracious, even remembered my name from my visit two nights earlier.
Very Delicious. Came here with a group of friends for a bit of a reunion. We all worked together in 2009/10.
We all had the buffet, and it was delicious. There are so many choices! I'm not really familiar with Indian food, so wouldn't necessarily have been able to go back to the buffet and find my favorites. This is my second time here, and I'm sure we'll be back. A poster near the front door, quoting Gandhi, seems to be the owners' belief in customer service, which explains how they have been around for so long. They appreciate their customers, and in turn, their customers appreciate them. The decor is very interesting, and the service was very good.
Can never go wrong here!. This is truly the BEST Indian food in town. We find the food extremely tasty with lots of favour. The buffet is large with a great selection of meat or Vegan choices. Every time we take a first time person they end up loving it! The service is good & prices better than other Indian places.
AMAZING buffet. Delicious food and great service. Make sure you take your time at the buffet! There is so much to try and the food is quite filling so stay a while, enjoy the atmosphere and the company you are with, and smile!
Excellent food for catering. Wonderful customer service.
Good Buffet. I finally got around to trying this place. I don't have a lot of experience with this style of cuisine, but it compares very favourably to the other places I have visited.
The inside of the restaurant is dominated by the buffet tables. The place is long and somewhat narrow, but there is more than enough room to make your way around the buffet and get back to your table. While there is a menu to order from, it seems that most customers opt for the buffet. I found the East Indian themed décor to be a nice touch. It was fancier than what I was expecting.
I went for the lunch buffet. There is a large assortment of items available. You make a circuit along a series of tables to pick up what you want. It is all self serve, no carving stations. There were several vegetarian dishes as well as dishes containing beef, lamb, chicken and pork. I enjoyed the tandoori chicken, spicy pan fried chicken and a pork dish served with a savoury sauce. The basmati rice was fluffy and enjoyable. The salad was crisp and fresh. They had large cracker style bread that had a good, spicy taste to it. Most of the items were accompanied by labels giving a description of what it was. The dessert table has several options. There were about ten different dessert items (including three types of ice cream). I'm embarrassed to admit that I tried most of them and found all to be enjoyable.
As I had the buffet, I didn't have much interaction with the staff. I can say that the servers were very prompt in refilling my water glass.
With taxes, the price for the lunch buffet was around $16. As I understand it, the dinner buffet has more menu items and costs a little more.
Given the quality and price...I will be back.
Amazing Buffet!. I just returned from the lunch buffet at East India Company Pub & Eatery. I am very impressed! There was *so* much to choose from in the buffet and everything tasted great; lots of variety in flavors. The price was very reasonable (about $12 - naan is extra, though). The decor of the restaurant is very nice as well.
Wish i could eat here every day.. In my opinion, this is the best place to experience Indian cuisine in Winnipeg.
The Mehra's are always inviting and gracious. The food is prepared by authentic Indian Chefs in tandoors so the flavor is the real deal. ( I love their naan, especially the cheese naan which uses cream cheese instead of paneer ... ya ya, i know its not authentic but i dont care! 8) ) The ambiance is usually lively and they have a decent selection of beers , both local and import.
While you can order menu items, the buffet is the star here and you have a wide variety of dishes at your disposal when you arrive. Food is almost always hot ( rarely one of the heating trays isn't always going full blast ) and the buffet is not always the same old dishes. Fridays are the seafood night and you can see everything from scallops to mussels on those nights. The dish that is usually on the extreme right end of the buffet is sometimes a show stealer, and always changes on a nightly basis. Desserts for the most part are static , but very enjoyable if you enjoy the indian staples such as Gulab Jamun and the fudge.
Price is fine considering what is available. Service is always attentive. In my Top 3 places in Winnipeg to eat based on the consistency and the fact i have rarely been disappointed in at least 100 times there.
8/10
Top notch in every way! My family and I have been going for over ten years and always have an amazing experience! From the rich decor to the extensive and delicious buffet to the extremely professional serving staff East India Company is a MUST for anyone who enjoys East Indian food or anyone who is looking for a unique and special dining experience in Winnipeg. The owners welcome you and make you feel valued, like being graciously welcomed into someone's home...I've never experienced this in any other restaurant.
Price. Awesome food and good selection but way too expensive. I wouldn't go back because of the prices.
I love this place. The food is tasty and the buffet has a huge selection. I've been here several times over the last three years and have never been disappointed.
Really Good. We really enjoyed the food. An endless buffet with lots of choices and reasonably priced. The desserts were really good and there was a variety of them which weren't all overly sweet.
Excellent variety to choose from and we will definitely be coming back to try everything we missed.
Our go-to place in Winnipeg. Whenever in doubt, go to East India Company.
Their buffet seems to change regularly, offering new dishes to try.
Every dish has such unique texture and flavour that you should really take small samples of each, rather than pile high.
One secret for flavour we've developed is taking advantage of the "pickle bar", which offers a selection of pickled veggies and chicken, that help compliment some of the blander selections (ie: butter chicken, tandoori chicken).
Play around and experiment with flavours: you won't regret it.
Worth the price if you plan your buffet wisely!
What a great dining experience! We had the buffet, and didn't try anything we didn't like. We were so glad we saved room for dessert, and its nice that they offer small portions. The ice crean and coconut fudge were amazing. When we crave indian, this is where we are coming from now on.
Very satisfied. Excellent service. The staff were very friendly and professional and provided quick service. We went for the buffet and were not disappointed. There is a lot of selection and everything was good. Very authentic and tasty. Overall a very enjoyable experience no complaints. Will definitely be returning the next time that we are in Winnipeg.
Went there for Valentine. good buffet selection. great service and our waiter looks like James McAvoy. The rose for the mrs was a nice touch.
Great. I went for lunch and there was a splendid selection of appetizers, vegetarian and meat dishes. I enjoyed the desserts too. You just have to remember to take a little bit of each so that you can sample the entire selection of dishes! I would love to go back and eat there again.
Food always fresh. Naan is outstanding, buffet is sensational, love when seafood makes a special appearance. Ice cream for desert and maple syrup candies.
Amazing food, friendly & professional owners as well as staff. This restaurant is very accommodating to whatever your needs and is hands down the best in town!
ReasOnably priced. I def have noticed the spices and flavors seem to be toned down a fair bit as of late. Still ok but not outstanding. Service is friendly.
Best Indian food in the city and by far the friendliest owners.
Good, but not the best Indian food. I come here every few years when I visit Winnipeg. It's not as good as other Indian/South Asian restaurants that I've visited in other cities in Canada, but it's also been consistent and comforting. Today, it was not quite as good as I remembered, but it was fairly good and eating a good amount for lunch made for a lighter supper. I wished, though, that the naan bread was part of the buffet.
Excellent restaurant -- delicious Indian cuisine, lovely courteous service, walk thru the door and exotic decor and rich aromas transport 2 the exotic in a moment, a restorative escape from the mundane.
Great eats and lots of it. Place was packed on Saturday nite but had a reserv and we were sitted in a few minutes. Had not been for 15 years, while the decor is good the liting made us feel like we were in an operating room, what's with the brite liting?? Service was fab. Owners are very pleasant as was the rest of the serving crew. Both chicken dishes were under spiced but the rest of the food was amazing! its is a great buffet and for the price i think its one of the best deals in town. The reason i hadnt been in so long was that it took years! for me do digest all the food I ate last time i was out. If this place had a better layout and soft liting it would be one of top places in town. Still, you cant go wrong here and will definitelty be back! Try the cheese naan(? bread) it was fabulous!
Crossface Chicken Wing
+4.5
Body Slam of Flavors!. Went to East India Company for buffet lunch with a few jabroni's from work last week Thursday. Got there at 11:30am just in time to beat the lunch rush. We instantly got seated and walked up to the buffet.
There were so many great choices, but my favorites included the Spinach-cheese dip, mini samosas, rice (white or vegetable), an assortment of curries (lamb, and beef (although the beef was a bit dry for my liking)), chicken tandori, and my all time favorite - butter chicken! I would be satisfied with just eating butter chicken and rice .. stick to your ribs full of goodness!
The waiter was attentive and picked up empty plates quickly. I was able to go up for round two. One thing though was there was somone making fresh naan bread by the buffet line, but it was an extra charge. I saved enough room for dessert and picked up mango pudding, a rice pudding, and a timbit like dessert drizzled in syrup. Drop kick delicious!
Will definitely go again!
YUUUM. Butter chicken is off the heezy.
I'm really starting to get on the indy train and this place reserves my seat every time.
No better Indian food anywhere. ...not even in India! I know because I've eaten in several places in Northern India. The East India Company food is spectacularly delicious. The atmosphere in magical and transporting. Best of all, the Mehra family and their employees are wonderful, welcoming and caring hosts.
It's like a curry party in my mouth and everyone is invited.. BOOM!
This place is like being in India, I've never been, but I own Outsourced on DVD. Only need to pump in the sound of an Indian call center to make this place more authentic.
WARNING: You may fall into a deep, (but pleasant) food coma following the over-indulgance of the incredibly delicious dinner buffet. SO many different options, so many different flavours; All of it soooo good! Servers are friendly and attentive. Beautiful music and decor. Naan bread made fresh in front of you! Wonderful experience altogether - MUST TRY!
Best East Indian in town. After Eating the worst East Indian food in Saskatoon, I figured it would be a good idea to mention the Best East Indian food I've had. The prices are high, at least for me, but well worth it. We usually go for the buffet, and for the price, the food selection and quality, I've never had better. We are greeted warmly, looked in on regularly, and the staff isn't pushy. My favourite dishes offered at the buffet are the butter chicken and the Navatran, but it is a good idea to try a little of everything. They can do nothing wrong when it comes to flavour.
Always a Favorite. We have been going to East India Co. for many years. The Diner buffet is by far my favorite, epecially on Fridays. Friday usually features some seafood dishes along side the regular ones. Try to go early though. Seafood tends to over cook in the warmers once on the buffet line. Flavours are always strong and very interesting. Their wine and beer list is perfectly suited for the food they serve too.
The service is second to none in this facitly. I believe every restaurant could learn a lesson about customer service based on what I see at East India Company. Where else in the City does the owner personally greet you, seat you, and check on you during your meal? The servers are helpful and friendly, and professionally dressed.
Wow! What an amazing feast. The decor and ambiance is so great. Felt like we were on a great trip. The food is so so good. Lots to choose from. The staff was friendly and helped us along with our choices. Loved the desserts. The prices were great for the quality!
Reminds me of home.. Always my first choice when I want to have an upscale dining experience. The butter chicken is one of the best in the city. The varieties of desert is mind blowing. The service is always professional, friendly and helpful. I recommend this place (and Charisma of India) to everyone for an incredible dining experience.
Try their mango lassi. It will blow your mind. My favourite time to come is sunday during lunch as you get a free mango lassi with the buffet.
The family hat owns this place is great too and are very involved in the community which is another reason why I like to support this great resaurant.
Mmm.... We went there on a Friday night for dinner. We both ordered the buffet. There was a large variety of food, and all of it was hot (except for the salads that were suppose to be cold)! The small dessert dishes were a nice touch, becuase you could sample many of them. They were all good, but my favorite was the mango mousse. All in all a great experience! We will definitely return!
Great Food and Great Feel. Arguably, the best East Indian restaurant in Winnipeg. Great variety to the buffet, great flavors and they don't skimp on the actual cream in the cream sauces (...ahem...Ivory...). Buffet is reasonably priced and the way to go. Individual dishes add up fast and tend to be a bit pricey. Worth multiple visits.
Best Murgh Makhani. I think their murgh makhani is the best in the city. It's always so tender and rich - I love that they include mushrooms in the sauce. The naan is also fresh and delicious. I always get the buffet - there are some excellent staples in it like the palak paneer, lamb korma, and all of the salads. They also rotate other dishes from the menu so you get some variety.
The mango lassi is mostly ice and a little too thin. The tandoori murghi is always too dry and flavourless. I really dislike the desserts here, but I'm usually so full from the buffet that I don't miss it!
The decor is lovely, but seating can be awkward. If you order the buffet, you can kiss your server goodbye. Most of the time they will abandon you after you make your initial drink and bread order.
A Classy Take on a Buffet. I'm not a huge fan of buffets, in general. However, I also feel overwhelmed deciding what to order at Indian restaurants, so East India Company is a good choice for me. You don't have to be wedded to any particular dish; you can try a whole bunch of flavours. It's a classy atmosphere and the staff are really attentive.
When we go here, my boyfriend always complains that there's crud stuck on the plates that didn't get removed in the dishwasher, but after one of the staff caught him obsessively sorting through all the plates, the dirty ones/all the ones he touched were taken away. Probably better to mention any problems to the owners, because they seem to care a lot.
The ice cream in the little terra-cotta-looking dishes was really delicious!
Consistantly great. My family & I come here probably once a month. It is an excellent place & a pleasant surprise for vegans & vegetarians who are used to having few menu choices. We've never ordered from the menu because we have never felt the need to. The buffet offers amazing salads, pickles, thin bread, rice, samosas, vegetable fritters, vegetarian curries & good smelling offerings for chicken/veal lovers too. My memory may not be serving me right but on my recent vists I noticed a dessert buffet that I don't remember being there before. I'm not going to sound like a very good foodie here, but you know those little wet timbit balls? Yeah, my husband says those are great at the restaurant. I myself prefer the burfi & the TO DIE FOR light, airy mango mouse/pudding. If you go, you should also experience the sweet, perfumy chai tea that the wait staff pour with flare. My one recommendation; don't go for a light lunch, the food is very heavy and it makes more sense to get a bang for your buck with a buffet.
Jai Ho!. The best Indian food in Winnipeg. But do yourself a favour, as good as the buffet is, order off the menu from time to time.
One of my favorites is the mixed meats skewer, cooked in the tandoor. Although technically an appy it's hearty enough for a meal especially if you order a side if naan. This traditional Indian flatbread is hand made fresh to order. I love the cheese stuffed naan but the garlic or plain are equally delicious.
The huge buffet does afford an opportunity to try a variety of dishes and you'd be hard pressed to find a fail. They offer all the standards like butter chicken, tandoori chicken, lamb and beef curry, dahl, palak paneeer and usually a special feature on a giant hot pan akin to a wok at the end of the line. Unfortunately this station all too often gets a little dried out overcooked quite quickly.
One of the advantages of the buffet however is the option to tap into the myriad salads and sauces (don't miss out on those spice pickled tomatoes hidden amongst the chutneys).
The buffet also gets you full access to the dessert bar...the rice pudding is not to be missed.
