This place definitely lived up to its hype! The food was fresh and sooo filling! Our server was friendly and you could tell she really enjoyed her job. We waited a while for the fried chicken but it was worth the wait! And our server let us know that it would take a little longer. Overall I absolutely recommend this classic diner! Just make sure you go there hungry!
Best fried chicken restauant I have ever been to! Friendliest staff, awesome chicken , fantastic prices and portions ....really what more is there to ask for , except to live close enough to walk to each day
One of the best places to eat and the food pictures in there menu are very nice too
One of the best burgers in town. Easily the best fries.
First time there, it was amazing food and atmosphere!!
Sorry for your loss. Peter was such a gem. Nicest guy..compassionate. They say god takes only the best!!! He will be definitely missed ♡
A landmark restaurant in Winnipeg with fantastic food, fast service and a lot of good people.
Have never been , drive by many times .... Prayers to his family
The place I go to when I come back to the old country
SO good. The ultimate comfort food spot! A must try if you're in the city.
The Red Top never disappoints. Seriously, the best burger and coleslaw in the city! Even my kids love going there. Great value for great food!
Very friendly staff, clean and yummy food, fast service, and excellent portions. You are treated like family here and the food is amazing. The chili is so yummy! The Greek salad is full of flavour and the fries are perfect! Definitely a must try!
I’ve been hearing good things for years, so I dropped by for dinner tonight, and it’s all true. The fried chicken was really good, and the super-server waitress had even warned me it would be half an hour for the meal. It was near capacity, so, fair enough. It was only 20 minutes, tops. Smart, smart service. Good prices, generous servings. Top-notch eatery.
There’s something about the Red Top
that makes it extra special. What stands out is the service and feeling of community that comes from being a decades’ old neighbourhood institution. Staff care - they’re genuinely invested in ensuring your meal is right and to their long upheld standards. And the thing is, other customers care too. Every time I go, there’s friendly banter, smiles all around and a feeling of belonging that permeates the place. It’s just a happy, welcoming place. Plus there’s a well-maintained touch of nostalgia from the beautiful Thunderbird parked out front to the sign boards over the busy kitchen depicting some of the burgers available.
Menu includes all the standard burger joint options, then some, all done right. They offer some interesting, changing deluxe burger specials that you might need to dislocate your jaw to chow down and platters with heaping portions of salad and fries, Greek favourites like gyros, etc. Sign in the back says they’re known for “the best fries in the city” and I’m apt to agree. Crisp outside, tender inside and hand cut.
The greatest greasy spoon in the city, hands down. You won't convince me otherwise! Have a strawberry milkshake with your brunch if you're feeling indulgent!
the food is good and the prices are decent. I went for a burger and my husband got a gyro. There are better burgers to be found in the city but as a casual diner this place is alright
If you go to Red Top Drive Inn, get the fried chicken! It is excellent. The burgers, and other dishes are good with huge portions, but the chicken is awesome.
I eat burgers at 3 places in Winnipeg, Mrs. Mikes, VJ's and Red Top. Red Top is consistently great and a first class burger experience. But Red Top is more than just burgers. Their pressure cooked chicken is amazing, chilli and chips is top drawer, decent salads and other fare. It's has a classic drive in feel and is worth the trip every time.
In all my years living and growing up in St. Vital, I had never actually visited the iconic Red Top. Don't get me wrong, I loved the place regardless... on its highlight corner, with its iconic sign and mug, and constantly kept, retro, red awnings and trim. I just never stopped in..... Maybe it's because I frequented other "Fatboy" joints, further down south... but regardless, it was time to check this place off my list.
I had the Top Burger (which is like your Winnipeg-Greek cheese burger), and my friend had the Lot'o Burger (like your Winnipeg Fatboy).
My burger was like a Sal's nip crossed with a "Greek style" burger, and my friend's was like a subpar Fatboy. The fries reminded me of In-N-Out Burger in the US.
Service was okay... but we had a glass with lipstick on it which made me question the overall cleanliness. But it's a (truly) retro drive-in turned diner. And they definitely have regulars and nostalgia wrapped up!
Always good food here. Great fries, friendly staff. Have had a variety of items and enjoyed them all. You won't leave hungry at this place.
Best chicken fingers I have had in Winnipeg!! Their fries are great, and so are their burgers! This restaurant has a 50s feel, which makes for a cool dining experience!
Only ever had the Fatboy platter, it's really good, I'd say top 3-4 fatboys in the city. The coleslaw has a nice flavour, it's a vinegar based dressing which is better then the common mayo-based ones found at so many other restaurants. The last time we ate here, my husband's coleslaw was nothing but cabbage while mine had tons of other veggies, his remained untouched while I gobbled mine up. No big deal, we came for the burgers anyways. Great flavour, typical fatboy prices and the fries were great.
Generous. Affordable. Friendly. Love it!
My boyfriend and I have been here for breakfast over 10 times now and we absolutely love it. The Saturday morning staff is excellent and the food is just as you would expect from a diner. My one critism is that their hash browns aren't crispy at all.
Breakfast was tasty, and especially for the price! We were able to find a booth in a comfortable location immediately upon arriving. The waitress came with waters very quick and asked if we'd like other drinks. My partner wanted coffee, my stepson wanted chocolate milk and I wasn't sure. Their drinks came fast. We asked for another moment to confirm our food orders.
Then we waited and waited and waited. I'm not sure if it was a staffing issue or something (I thought I heard the lady serving us mention to the table behind us something about problem in the kitchen? I think they were out of a few items on the menu, but since we wanted breakfast it didn't affect us). When the waitress finally came back to take our breakfast order (about 10 minutes after she brought the first round of drinks) she never returned with my drink. She was making her rounds to the other tables nearby and I had to remind her that I'd like my drink (I was really thirsty).
The food came out fairly quickly after we placed the order and it was delicious. The eggs over easy and rye toast with bacon were exactly the way I wanted. My stepson had the 3 hot cakes and they were quite good. All in all it was quite a delicious experience and I will go back for breakfast again. Hopefully next time the waitress gets around a little quicker, but all in all, very good.
I have been here many times over the years, it is always consistent. I have never been disappointed. Lot o Burger, chili fries, fried chicken dinner with coleslaw, are all excellent. Too many good things to mention. You better be hungry!
Friendly and efficient staff. I will be back!
Old school dinner feel! Been driving past this spot since I was a kid and finally made my way down here. Gives that vintage feel with new age service! Decently priced in comparison to all the new burger joints opening up.
I got the 3 piece fried chicken and it was great! The chicken is amazing. I got it to go so the salad I got with it was a little soggy. The fries were for sure un seasoned but I coated it with salt and vinegar which made them taste a lot bigger. I will for sure go again and try something different the next time!
Still awesome after all these years.. Three of us had supper here last night. My gf had never been, my buddy goes regularly and I hadn't been in 25 years.
Two piece chicken dinners for those two and they both loved it. I had the Lot O burger platter and it was awesome. All the right fixings, tasty and filling when served with great coleslaw and a mountain of fries. Added chilli to those and that was a good call. Super yummy.
The place was packed but service was great. Friendly and efficient. I have decided we have to go back more often. "You Gotta Eat Here"
Great spot. I had the Greek burger with fries and my buddy had a double cheeseburger with poutine. Booth and tables were a little tight! Overall, excellent meal and good value. Can't believe it took me 30 years to try it!

Recommend!. Fast, friendly and tasty!
Fast friendly diner style service. Great prices and huge portions. This restaurant has become a regular need to get a great breakfast
One of the Best Fried Chicken in Town. We decided to try out the Red Top Diner based on the reviews from Urbanspoon. I had the Lot-O-Burger while my Wife had the Chicken & Spaghetti Platter. Service was prompt & very friendly. Our server was even kind enough to accommodate our Kid's Combo Breakfast order although it was past the 11am cut-off time.
What made this trip to the diner stand-out though was their Fried Chicken. One of the best we've had in along long time. Just for their Fried Chicken this restaurant is truly worth a visit. We'll be coming back for sure.
That Chicken!!!. A friend and I went for their chicken dinner. He ordered a 3 pc and I ordered a 2 pc. The dinner came with a mountain of fries and enough coleslaw for 2. I ordered gravy on the side. The gravy wasn't the hottest but very tasty. I could only eat 1/3 of the fries and 1/2 of the coleslaw. Fries were okay, but just fries. I think if I went back, I would order 4 pc of chicken and some coleslaw. It was so juicy and loved the crispy skin! Service very friendly and attentive. I thought for the amount of food and 2 soft drinks, $35 was more than reasonable. Can't wait to go back!!!
Been a while. Went last week with an old pal. ordered spaghetti and chicken platter. that chicken was amazing. the spaghetti was tasteless. hardly any flavor. just plain noodles with chili on it which didnt add much to the spegetti. will return though. the service is always amazing and that chicken is to die for!!
Retro Red Top delivers the diner classics. Lots of people rave about the burgers here, but I almost (I had a Gyro once - it was good too) can't bring myself to order anything but the fried chicken. Crispy, salty, not too greasy and possibly the best in town. Comes with a good salad, fries and completely unnecessary toast. The whole vibe of this place is baby-boom era diner. Recently expanded/renovated but you might never know. Portions are very large - about half the people who come in need some kind of take out container for leftovers. Won't change your life, but certainly won't disappoint.
This place is a classic... awesome food& huge portions.. so come with an apetite. Gyros, burgers, fries Greek salad.. all excellent!!! Should be on the. Must do list for tourists!!!
My grandma and I just stumbled upon this place looking for some lunch. We were both very pleased with our meals. The portion sizes were Huge, the flavours were awesome, and you definitely can't complain about their prices! Also, the diner atmosphere was really nice, and this place was very clean and tidy!
The Fried chicken is the bomb...very flavourful and has a great crisp on the skin! Awesome!
Red Top Rocks. The food has been great every time I've been there and even when the place is busy the service is still quick and good. The interior is a throwback but I think it adds charm. I have only ordered Burgers and fries so far but I will try the chicken soon (With a recommendation from You Gotta Eat here I will definitely try it).
Tried the chicken dinner and wow is it good. Great tasting juicy chicken that you have to wait for to cool but soooo goid.
Wow. Fried chicken is awesome. best priced burgers in the city.

Deserved the TV shoutout completely!. This is the only restaurant fried chicken I've ever had that I've liked (I love fried chicken, but only made by me or my mom), and I love the grilled cheese. It's always packed and the people there are always friendly. Great guilty-pleasure food. You Gotta Eat Here was right.
I love the staff and the food.. We usually go once a week for breakfast and I have never had a bad breakfast. The staff are amazing as they are prompt, efficient and very friendly. For the most part I get the breakfast combo as it comes with the usual 2 eggs, hash browns and toast but I love that it also comes with a little bacon, sausage and ham. So, I get a little of everything.
For me it is one of the best breakfast places in the city, I love it.
After you got to eat here show, I had to try their fried chicken. Brought the family over but the pressure fryer was not working... Nooooo ! Lovely meal regardless, we'll be back!
Amazing chill and awesome homemade food!!!!
Big Food Serving. I've been here many times and just loved the place. You'll leave happy with your stomach full with their big servings. Service is good too. The owner's son is very friendly as well.
Great diner experience. I'm not exaggerating when I say their fried chicken is the best. Not greasy and full of flavor. The portions are very generous. I also recommend the strawberry milkshake.
Tasty beef and great service!. Yummy cheeseburger, fair prices. Very friendly service. A must try for burger lovers!
Breakfast and fried chicken heaven!. Big fan of their fried chicken.. I think it would stand up well against (and maybe top) Chicken Chef. Their breakfasts are plentiful and delicious greasy spoon classics, just be sure to go early enough to get actual breakfast potatoes (real fried potatoes, NOT deep fried) otherwise you get fries. Burgers there don't stand up to the likes of VJ's or Daly, but I've had worse.
Love the Chili burger. The Chili burger is superb. When I ordered it the first time, I was amazed, the entire burger is covered with Chili, (yummy). It may not look very pleasant, but the taste is awesome.
Best fried chicken in the city .... Classic 50's style diner with personable service and excellent food. I absolutely love their fried chicken and it is worth the twenty minute wait as it is always made fresh to order. It comes accompanied with a generous portion of homemade fries and delicious coleslaw and toast. Their homemade burgers are also very popular, but for me the chicken is where it's at!!! Give this Winnipeg institution a try ... You won't regret it!!!
My girl loved it and that's all it matters!. I had lot a burger plate w fries and coleslaw added bacon , very tasty and reasonable price 10$ but my 8 year old picky eater just loved the chicken fingers and fries , said it was the best chicken finger and fries supper ever ! Not spicy at all and she loved the breading on it so its a winner , I have to say the service at the counter was exceptional w a big smile , thank you !
Classic Diner. Tucked in old st.vital, it's one of those diners that's been around for years and a place I'd been meaning to try. Now I can say that I have. Friends and I swung by for a bite to eat, wanting a burger, something they're known for. Going inside was like taking a step back into the 50's. Classic feel. Everything was clean and well-lit.
My Lot-O burger lived up to it's name. A thick beefy patty slathered in onions, lettuce, tomatoes, chili sauce, the bun was soaking up all of the juices and slowly disintegrated as I dove in. Definitely more filling than there is bread for that burger. It was messy and delicious. Fries are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. For the amount of food you get, the prices can't be beat! Will come back for more burgers!
Love it. Huge great burgers.
The Best Chicken in Winnipeg! Oh so moist & juicy - yet so crispy too!!
Good food!. We had burger and fries, and a denver sandwich and onion rings. One coffee and one coke all for $17.81. The food was fresh, service friendly and prices good. There's a reason they've been in business for over 50 years. Got to go there for breakfast sometime.
Pretty good burgers & fries. Just had the lot-o-burger - the Red Top's version of a Fat Boy - and t was pretty good. The patty was well seasoned, and the chili was perfect. Overall, I think the Fat Boy at Dairy Delight is better, but not by much (DD edges it out only because of the bun!) Fries were really good as well.
I didn't care for the coleslaw too much; it's a vinegar-based one and I'm more partial to the cream-based ones.
All in all, a good meal, and very reasonably priced. My wife had the chicken and spaghetti and our bill came to about $20. Certainly better food and value than Five Guys.
Delicious. Lot-o-burger, was a lot of burger. This is the way a burger should be! Fries are great as are te o-rings.
We eat here a lot and will continue to do so.
Excellent fried chicken. Good coleslaw. Lamb/beef gyro and Greek salad so so. Fries and chilli fries average.
Red Top is fantastic value. I had the Lot-O-Burger plate and there was absolutely no way I could finish it, the amount you get is astounding for the price. Have also been here for breakfast and found that to be pretty good as well, good portions and very tasty. The only small issue I can think of is that the tables are tiny, which makes it a little uncomfortable if you have a group of four. Other than that, two thumbs up!
Their chicken is the best.. I've been eating at Red Top for years, since I was a wee one actually.
Their burger is okay, quality varies visit to visit but their pressure fried chicken is the absolute best I've ever had at a restaurant. Juicy, salty and always piping hot it's always worth the 20 minute wait.
Their fries are excellent, both plain or doused in chili, and their spaghetti and chili is definitely a great side to their chicken.
Can't go wrong. Stoped in this weekend with the wife and we both had the cheese burge platter. Once again I ate all of mine and the wife could only eat half. Never disipionted when we go, prices are good for the amount of food you get.
Yum!. Great fried chicken!!
Exactly What I Wanted!. I don't usually crave burgers and fries but, for whatever reason I wanted a really great diner style meal. My boyfriend suggested we try Red Top and I was not disappointed what-so-ever! Our burger platters came out super fast and they were so fresh and the fries were nice and hot. I would suggest that if you decide to go here make sure you go very hungry as the servings are huge! I will definitely go back next time I am craving a burger.
Good fries. The fries are good but I wish the gyros wasn't like lunch meat. . Burgers are good. The atmosphere makes you forget when things aren't great. It is from another era.
The pressure cooked chicken is really delicious, moist inside and crispy skin. Very flavourful and salty!
The Best Diner In Winnipeg!. The Red Top Drive-Inn is simply the best diner I have ever been to for comfort food. The service is fast and friendly, coupled with a fun 60's diner atmosphere!
I have read a few reviews that try to trash the place. However, they have many regular customers and are very busy everyday speaks volumes about the establishment. The Red Top is one of the most popular diners in the Winnipeg area, and is clearly my top choice! In my opinion anyone that doesn't like it simply doesn't have a clue what a great diner is truly all about!
Top Menu Items:
-LOTTO BURGER
-Poutine
-Fried Chicken Mmmmm...
Happy days. I worked at Red Top car wash starting 1965 until its demise 1970.
Gus Scouras, George Dupre, Leo Dedalt, John Scouras, Roland Pilon.
Back in the day I ate so many hamburger steaks at the restaurant I should weigh 300 lbs.
It was a blast at the time very sport oriented we had Teddy Green,The Guess who, Winnipeg Police, Duffy's Taxi, Reimer Bros. and many others as clients.
would love for the Top to bring back the hops and the wolfman.
History:. Red Top ahhhh the memories.Growing up right behind them when they opened was truly awesome.Burgers and Fries,Frost Top RootBeer and on and on.Sadly the youngest of 2 brothers died last year Johnny, but Gus the older bro had retired a few yrs before and is still around but just not at the business.Back in the early 60's Gus,Johnny and a few other partners were always there in a little booth as the place was only about half as big as it is today.Characters abounded everywhere, food was great, still is.They also had the Red Top Car WASH on the other side of the lot as well as those Roller Skating Carhops and almost any night of the week and weekends at least during the summer local Disc Jockeys like Doc Steen of CKRC could be found spinning the tunes in a glass fronted trailer under or near to the Big Red Top Sign with the Frost Top Root Beer mug on top off of St Mary's Rd.Now those were the days I tell you.You all must have seen Happy Days on TV right well they had nothing on this local Icon,Hot Rods abounded and many if not all nights they had line ups of vehicles parading around the lot looking for a parking stall yes it was that busy no lie.Early 60's was the start of it all and Red Top was at the forefront of it all!:)...BOUXY
The interior is definitely a blast from the past, I don't think much has changed since they first opened in 1960. But the nostalgic diner feel gives this place its charm.
I've heard good things about their burgers so that's exactly what I ordered - the "cheez-burger plate" ($7.39) - the burger was topped with mustard, chili sauce, onions, dill pickle and enclosed in a sesame bun. Sides included crispy fries and coleslaw. I was impressed that the patty filled up the entire area of the bun. The chili wasn't very flavourful, it was just there and didn't enhance the burger for me. But at least the chili didn't drench my burger as I could eat the entire thing without it falling apart. The burger patty itself was good but it lacked the depth I expected, meaning it didn't have the distinct crunch and grill top taste on the outer layer and juiciness inside. The burgers are made from fresh lean ground beef and made daily. I will agree that the burger is definitely leaner than other burgers I've tried in the city because I finished my cheeseburger and didn't get that "why did I eat that?" feeling. The fries are crispy but they are not salted (like most places) so you will have to adjust accordingly. The coleslaw is a vinegar based dressing, which I prefer over the creamy ones. This one had a lot of tang which makes for a nice contrast to the heavier items on the plate. My boyfriend really enjoyed his double cheeseburger plate ($7.99) and chocolate milkshake ($4.29). Funny how an extra burger patty is only 60 cents more when you compare his order to mine! Good value! I took a few sips of the chocolate milkshake and thought it was pretty good without being overly thick.
Service was pretty fast and cordial. I'll definitely come back to try their generous gyro plates ($10.25) that comes with fries and Greek salad - it was the by far one of the most popular items ordered at lunch. The pressured fried chicken sounds enticing too!
Hours: M-W 8am-8 pm. Thu/Fri 8-am-9pm. Sat 8am-8pm. Sun 9 am-2pm.
Good old fashioned. Great old fashioned burgers in an atmosphere some of us grew up in. I like the booth style seating the burgers where good old fashioned patties with the extras you like. No soya-veggie style hamburgers just beef with fries. I recommend this place for family friendly dinning.
Nostalgic charm. This is the burger place that I've been craving for such a long time!
Red Top probably hasn't changed in years, and that makes it all the better. It just feels and tastes timeless. There's a certain set of values that some restaurant owners hold to as years pass, and Red Top embodies those values. I can't describe it exactly, but go here and I think you'll see what I mean.
Portions are huge and everything is made right there in-restaurant. The chili was great, the fries were great, and even the coleslaw was really good which I don't get to say very often. The star though, was my burger. It tasted like my mother's homemade patties from my childhood would have if she had a diner-style grill to cook them on. Peppery, crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and loaded with toppings and sitting right there beside a pile of fries and coleslaw. That's how it should be.
It's a rarity nowadays to get a hamburger patty that's not perfectly formed and generic tasting. Red Top delivered exactly that for me with a heap of nostalgic charm. Amidst all the McDonalds', Burger Kings, and A&Ws of the city, Red Top is the bar by which Winnipeg burger joints should be measured.
Quality Hamburgers. I enjoy eating at this place. It is a typical diner in terms of service, menu and decor.
The burgers are quite good, but I find the fries hit and miss. Sometimes they are crisp and delicious, other times t hey have been soggy and barely edible. I must say, the good times have outweighed the bad..I just wish they had more consistency with the fries.
This place can be very busy at lunch, but they move people in and out fairly quickly.
Sadly, the original owner died a short time ago. Luckily, this has not affected the quality of the place. They do his memory proud by keeping things like they were before.
5 words. Fried Chicken. Chili Spaghetti. Together!
The Red Top certainly qualifies as a classic diner. This is a place where the meals are hearty and the service friendly. If you’re heading down St. Mary’s take the time to stop off at the Red Top Drive Inn. You’ll be glad you visited this family run place.
...the 6 patty “Monster Burger”? It’s a 24 oz. (total) burger on a crusty loaf with cheese, chili, lettuce, tomato, pickle and the usual condiments for $14.99. None of us had it today. Our waitress explained that they sell them fairly regularly, and most people that order one, finish it. She also went on to tell us a story of an entire class of grade 8 students that came
I got today the "Lot o Burger" with some bacon. This poutin as well. He food was excellent. Unfortunately there was a wait, but they seem understaffed. No big deal to me personally.
The service was very friendly, kept our drinks full despite how busy it was.
The booths aren't super comfy, but it's a very classic vibe inside.
The parking lot is a bit crowded, but that's to be expected if the food is as good as it is.
I travelled 10 hours to enjoy a few menu options after seeing this diner on You Gotta Eat Here ! Service was very fast and friendly . Chilli cheese fries were amazing ! Burger and dog were mediocre. Grabbed a Rootbeer milkshake for the ride , and was absolutely delicious ! I’ll be back again one day to try more options !
great service! good food. fun stop. reminds me of a Waffle House but red and they also serve burgers!
It was a nice lunch stop good service A diner that opened in 1960 the décor shows its age
From burgers to gyros they have a nice Greek salad worth a visit
An institution in St Boniface. Lots of parking. Ordering was quick and easy. Fried chicken and fries were up to their normal high standards. (And good sized portions) Staff friendly and professional.
The only reason I couldn’t give this 5stars.
I waited for my order inside at an empty booth I was directed to by the hostess. The whole time I was there (15-20 minutes) some obviously troubled old man kept stumbling by on his way to and from no where. He interrupted a lady ordering to ask for a glass of water (on his umpteenth trip by the cash). I know kindness and tolerance are important but if I had decided to eat in, I would have been disappointed with this distraction. I probably won’t choose to eat in myself and I’ll order in advance next time if at all possible - or wait in the car.
