Review Blufish - Winnipeg

Yawhann Chong
My most favorite sushi restaurant in the city. Many sushi restaurants have come and gone over the years, and many favorites are no longer around. But Blufish is still here. Even through the pandemic, their food through delivery has continued its high standards. You can tell a lot about a sushi restaurant by the quality of their sashimi. Any amateur can take canned tuna and roll it into maki, but it takes a qualified, experienced chef to prepare and serve sashimi at the highest standards. I'm no chef, but I know quality sashimi when I taste it. I've tasted amazing sashimi, terrible sashimi, and everything in between. Blufish places high as amazing sashimi. Despite my compliments about their delivery standards, dining in the restaurant is still beyond measure. Anybody who hasn't done so simply must. Service is accommodating, the environment is cozy and warm, and the food tastes best when it is freshly prepared. If you are a sushi aficionado, you owe it to yourself to give Blufish a try. You will keep coming back like I do!

The food here was absolutely divine and very affordable! We started with the beef gyoza and vegetable tempura; both were delicious. Next we enjoyed the caterpillar roll and unagi combination. The banana tempura was the perfect ending to the meal and I'll be thinking about it for a long time to come.

Celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary and had dinner at Blufish, We ordered a lot of food and tried some of the more pricey offerings hoping that we can get some good quality sushi since we are paying more but….. this place has one of the worst sushi rice that I have had in a sushi restaurant. It does not even taste like it was seasoned sushi rice but plain, cold and a bit tough rice with raw fish on top. Any sushi lover will understand how important the sushi rice is but since this place has superstore quality sushi rice and charges a premium is a sin. Part of our order was 4 pieces of Red Maguro, at 4 bucks each it should be good right? It was just ok and if you notice in the photo 1 of the red maguro was significantly smaller than the rest. So not only do they serve bas sushi rice but are skimping on the fish! There was nothing nothing outstanding in what we tried, even the edamame was soggy though I did like the cucumber side dish. Overall if I was going to spend this much again on sushi I would no doubt go to Edokko instead. People who prefer rolls might like Blufish as there was a lot of skip orders, I just they had better sushi rice on their orders. For my money I would look else where. Another thing to note is they include White Tuna (Fake Tuna) in their Chirashidon….this fish, also know as butter fish and escolar causes gastrointestinal irritation and has a laxative effect so avoid it!

Absolutely yummy! My favourite spot for epic sushi. The location is super hip and the menu does not disappoint. Highly recommended!!! 🍣 🍱

Blufish came as a highly recommended location for sushi. Going with the sashimi bento, I expected high quality to match the price. The inclusion of a water/ice pack to keep the sashimi cold was a clever, caring inclusion that kept the meat at its finest. Other than that, I felt most of the meal average. The rice, the sashimi, the miso soup, the edamame and various sides... it was all just ok and felt like a chore to get through. Maybe it's a take out thing and dining in-restaurant would lead to a better experience? I'll keep investigating other locations, but may return to try the maki, hot offerings, and lauded atmosphere when circumstances permit.

Great sushi and tempura! The dragon roll in particular was amazing. Would eat here again!

Overall I wanted to give my experience 3 stars. HOWEVER, I ordered Toro and then instead I was served regular tuna. That’s very disappointed. I’ve served in sushi restaurants and as a former cook I know thats a cardinal sin. The dim lighting made it hard to catch before eating the first piece. Plus we had limited time to finish our meals so I didn’t say anything at the time. How would you feel if you ordered hamburger made from wagyu beef but instead were served a low grade supermarket steakette? Personally I believe issues like this need to be highlighted publicly and the business should be reading their reviews if mistakes are to be avoided in the future. The service was friendly. The dinning room was clean. The washroom was dingy and the door hung up in the floor. The scallops appetizer was great. But the sushi rice was dry and flavourless. Out of the 10 pieces of nigiri, none of it was very satisfying. I couldn’t taste the soft shell crab in the super dynamite roll until the last two pieces. The bill for the two of us came to $150 plus $20 for tip. I would not recommend this place if you are very familiar with good sushi

My last review was four years ago. Since COVID I've been in the Midwest USA. I preface this because coming back home and trying this now, I realize how delicious some of this food is. I've been reading the reviews and looking at the photos and I have some pointers for those visiting now. Knowing what to order here is important. The signature items generally shine here. I still look for something similar to the spicy Ben roll when I'm in the USA and have not found it yet. First the bad ... Service was kind of abysmal when we went last night. Back in the day, this would never fly. The server was not friendly at all. They took our order, made no recommendations, didn't remove empty plates unless we were handing them to her and due to that, tried to constantly force plates on to the table. She was Curt and blunt. My man wanted to pay for everyone's meal and she questioned it... The restaurant up keep itself is also not as I remember it. It's not as tidy as it used to be. The menus remain the same as when I was working there and are showing their age. Now for the good.... Most of what we ordered tasted as I had hoped. It was flavourful and uniquely blufish. As I mentioned the menus looked like they were really showing their age, but that also means they have not price increased since the menus were created so the value is certainly there considering the rise in grocery prices. Where I'm from in the USA, we pay the same amount for our sushi but in USD. There were some instances that gave me pause like the Cajun seared salmon seemed not to have enough Cajun seasoning and the somoku roll didn't taste like torched scallops. Aside from that, everything that we ordered was delicious. The white truffle tuna carpaccio was improved on this visit, but I don't think it's the original truffle oil as that was the best. Parking though is terrible here as it is in all of exchange. We lucked out and found one on main Street in front of 411ish. There's enough room for 2 cars and most people don't realize right away. You cannot park there during rush hour but after 530 you are golden. Previous review ..... I use to work for Blufish, but now that it's under new management I wanted to see how it was going. A lot of the serving staff has remained the same, with changes in the kitchen from what I can tell. Tonight we did the White truffle tuna carpaccio, Blufish scallops, Cajun seared salmon, Hachimitsu ebi, Ben Roll, and shrimp tempura. Skip the White truffle tuna Carpaccio. It was my favorite item there originally. The slices are no longer thin like in its original incarnation and the sauce tastes different. I think they switched truffle oils. They have some of the best tempura in the city. Their shrimp tempura remains on point. They are also one of the few restaurants that serve gluten free tempura without doing an up charge. I did not try it on this trip. The Hachimitsu Ebi is one of my favorites. The sauce is heavenly, and the shrimp very large pieces. The price is extremely good, I definitely recommend this one. Ben Roll still is fantastic. The Blufish scallops, though never been my personal favorite, was a number one seller due to its flames upon delivery. When you see one, other tables tend to order it because its presentation is beautiful. You also can't beat the price for this, and its cheaper to eat it in the restaurant than to make it at home. This restaurant has always been great for accepting modifications. If you have a food allergy issue, they will try their best to accommodate. So looks like things on this visit remained very good. We did go in for lunch awhile ago and the quality of the bento box was not stellar, but the pricing for what you get is. We had Kenix as a server and she did an excellent job.

had high hopes for this place and was let down... the food was great, good portions but a little over priced. funky atmosphere but the Skip the Dishes couriers got more attention than the customers in the restaurant. took a long time for the food and wait to order. not sure if I'll return.

Favourite sushi place in Winnipeg! I love that my gluten free celiac requirements are always respected by the staff who bring me gluten free dishes. I've been a semi regular customer since blufish opened.

BluFish is consistently amazing sushi and we LOVE sushi! We tried so many dishes it is hard to pick a favorite - everything is delicious. And it was even better because we lived in the Ashdown and could walk down inside the building - great in winter! We still come for sushi whenever we are back in Winnipeg.
